The world can seem like a safe place. You wake up in a comfy bed, prepare yourself a tasty meal, take a hot shower, all in the comfort of your own home. You then head to work, where people work in a team to reach mutual goals and provide for themselves and their families. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?
Well, that's only half of the picture. You can also get food poisoning before you leave, end up in an automobile accident on your way, and fall down the stairs at the office. I'm not saying you will, but these unfortunate situations are just mathematical probabilities, and the fact that we don't like to think of them doesn't diminish their chances.
Interested in the things that we tend to overlook, Reddit user TYP-E made a post on the platform, asking everyone, "What is something that can be far more dangerous than people realize?" and folks immediately started sending in their answers. Below you will find the most popular ones.

Texting while driving. See it all the time. Seen people get into a big collision and continued texting immediately after. People should lose their licenses for texting while driving.
In Denmark, if you are caught driving with your phone in the hand three times, you lose your license.
Would probably be even more effective if you lost your phone.
Load More Replies...I nearly got run over on a zebra crossing as the driver was talking on the phone. She was holding it as well. Just about managed to shout something like "It's a zebra crossing, you nearly ran me over" so the person on the other end of the phone could hear it. FYI Pedestrians have priority at zebra crossings in the UK
*was on call for a traffic security interview* /s (good you got out of it unharmed)
Load More Replies...Yes, it's illegal pretty much everywhere and in many countries will result in a suspended licence for repeat offenders. And in no way does this belong in a list of "surprisingly dangerous" things. It's no more surprising than reading a book or watching a film while driving would be.
At least 85% of drivers on the road got their licenses in a crackerjack box.
Was trying to overtake a cyclist this morning on the way to work, he was veering all over the road because he was in his phone!
I don’t know if you are in the UK or not but I am and I see this all the time. I want to shout at them that they not only have no physical protection from vehicles but they also have no awareness of them because their concentration is elsewhere. The same with parents pushing their children in prams across a road whilst on their phone. It happens far more often than you would imagine.
Load More Replies...That's beyond dangerous, just as being live on social media while driving. I know of a case when a bus driver was in a live transmission on facebook while he was driving high speed on a highway. He lost control of the bus and crushed into another car. The bus driver, several passengers and the other car driver died.
I saw a woman die on the center median of the highway, the emt's were working on her, chest compressions, and then... stood up and stopped. Later it was in the paper that she had reached for her phone that fell onto the floor while driving, car shot over the median, head on into a pickup, then into another car, she was ejected. It was a somber drive into work that day.
Pregnancy and Childbirth is extremely dangerous, and I have met a lot of people who don't seem to or refuse to understand this.
Wow, didn't take long at all for the anti-US comment to come out, did it?
Load More Replies...I am one of those that would have died if I wasn't already at the hospital for a checkup. They baby survived too. 😊
Especially if they are men, religious/extremist and feel entitled to dispose of women's bodies. I met an orthodox priest who was full of rage toward women who feared the risks of a pregnancy. "It's their duty to give birth! Yes, it's risky, so what? They should die like heroes doing their duty!" Pathetic idiot.
Thankfully, in the countries with good, affordable healthcare, that risk can be reduced to à minimum, but it can never be zero.
Infant mortality rate in USA now at around 5.5 for every 1000 births.
I venture to say that this has a lot to do with the taboo surrounding unsuccessful pregnancies. Since it is an "unmentionable" subject, it remains shrouded in mystery. I'm not suggesting that the poor mothers who go through such a horrible experience just get up and share, but as a member of a group subjected to severe trauma (I'm adopted), I am acutely aware that trying to ignore the fallout is damaging. To go along with this, I perceive a vibe in our society that praises and rewards mothers who have successful pregnancies yet (inadvertently?) punishes all the rest. Why don't we have a softer spot for those mothers to land? They need a place to be able to process their grief, and yet they are instead met with more-or-less "suck it up, buttercup!" I think we can do better.
It has historically been more than dangerous. Is it still much too dangerous in the US>
The sun.
I live in a pretty consistently sunny touristy area. The amount of people that let themselves get ruthlessly burned or try hiking without water is staggering. The sun will f**k you up.
Isn't it weird how a giant bright sphere of death sits up there and nobody thinks about it or tries to see it? So strange to me.
And seldom mentioned, it is also a contributor to cataract formation if the eyes have been exposed to too much UV overtime.
Load More Replies...Prolonged exposure to the UV rays can cause skin cancer, even with sunscreen. I knew somebody from my old neighborhood who would soak in the sun all damn day, and would put on a decent amount of sunscreen. Killed him 3 years ago, after a 5 year battle with skin cancer. Thing that gets me though, he was only maybe 15 years older than me. 15-16 years older than me. I’m surprised he wasn’t taught this stuff in school like I was. Between school and my parents, I knew about the dangers of the sun on our skin from a relatively young age. Either he didn’t know, or just didn’t care. People gotta be more careful, man.
Prolonged exposure to the sun really cleared up my psoriasis. That was during lockdown when we had a heatwave. It's come back though :(
Also tourists who have no respect for water. The sea will kill you!
To anyone who visits any of the desert US national parks: wear sunscreen and bring more water than you think you'll need, EVEN IN WINTER.
Spreading false info or rage bait.
Can't scream fire or bomb in a crowded theater.... shouldn't be able to knowingly spread lies that could lead to people storming the US capital building.
Looking at you, Rupert Murdoch. Unfortunately, it appears that his son Lachlan is just like Daddy.
False information isn’t good, and I do what I can to help correct errors they I see when I am able, but I question how dangerous it actually can be since we have such abundant access to numerous ways to fact check things. And I feel pretty strongly about not always labeling things “misinformation” when there’s a disagreement in how some things can be interpreted or understood. It’s okay to have differing opinions and it’s better to have civilized conversations where we learn things rather than just hating and attacking people.
It's dangerous when the person(s) spreading the false information uses it as truth to get followers to engage in violent and criminal acts. Too many people will continue to believe the lies, even when the facts stare them in the face. I don't see how someone can look at the situation that the US and many other countries are in and still believe misinformation isn't dangerous.
Load More Replies...Politicians thrive off this (from both parties but I’ve seen it more on the republican side; not sure if democrats just hide it better or they don’t spread as much fake news)
anything GOP .. it's truly tragic how stupid the population has become under the constant self brain-washing.
Driving while tired.
Your body cannot fight the need to sleep when you are tired. It's because of the high level of adenosine in your brain. You can use coffee, energy drinks or other stimulants but only for a very short while, and only if you are not too tired. And only 2 seconds of micro-sleep while driving is more than enough to crush your car at high speed.
I have cancelled appointments because I was starting to feel sleepy. You cancel appointment. You might have to pay a cancellation fee. You drive, you might die. Or, worse, kill someone else.
Load More Replies...My dad had a friend who would snort coke to keep him awake on long drives 😅
When I was 18, day before 19th bday, I was studying for finals, had little sleep & making 2.5 hr drive from parents back to uni - 1.5 hrs in, at dusk, I nodded off & flipped my jeep 3 times. No matter your age you can fall asleep driving!
37 years ago today (Sept. 27, 1986), driving sleepy killed Cliff Burton, who was one of the best bassists ever
A friend of mine fell asleep at the wheel. Wrapped his car around a telephone pole. He managed to get out with only minor bruises, but was suffering from shook and wandered off. Emergency services later found him and sorted him out. They told the hospital staff that when they pulled up to the accident site, they were convinced that they were going to be dealing with a fatality because of the condition of the car, and couldn't believe that he was (more of less) unscathed.
Agreed. My dad fell asleep when driving and crashed against a tree. Was very lucky to live. Someone told me recently they were so tired they didn't remember part of the drive home
What about if you work night shift? 12 hour night shifts. No one to drive you home. Don’t live in an area with no public transit. To far for a cab. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Please don't drive tired no matter what. Park in the nearest safe place and sleep till you're good to go again
Pressure washers. People think it’s funny to spray others with them but the reality is that water coming out of that nozzle can be powerful enough to chip bricks. It easily cuts into the skin and can even inject that water into your bloodstream. Also the blue ringed octopus has some of the most toxic venom on the planet yet people still hold them thinking they’re cute.
these big industrialized pressurized washers are dangerous machines if you don't know how to use them, very powerful dudes.
When I was little we had one with electrical fault, so in the mist it also came out 220 volts ⚡️ 😅 (230 volts now adays).
Load More Replies...Even home pressure washers. I once set one too high and took paint off the bumper of a car.
I am so curious now. You say ‘a car’, not ‘my car’. I feel that I need more information.
Load More Replies...I wish I could upvote the pressure washer one more; those things can wash your skin off your body
I work in an Emergency Department. Had a guy come in that decided to take a drink from the end of a pressure washer. Blew his lower jaw and tongue completely off.
My father foolishly put his hand in front of a power washer he was using and ended up having to get a couple stitches!
Done that myself when I was a wee kiddo. Took the skin clean off my fingers

Getting into a relationship with a low self esteem or toxic partner.
OMG. And some people never learn, saved from one toxic partner just to pick up another.
I don’t get why low self esteem is before toxic in this comment. Toxic people should be avoided at all costs. People with low self esteem deserve love. If it’s too much of an effort to help them see that they are worthy of it then that’s your failing, not theirs and you should avoid them for their sake. I have friends with low self esteem and telling them the things I like or love about them is no effort at all.
"Be careful who you choose to marry. This one decision will determine 80% of your life's happiness." A quote I saved as a dreamy teen...wish I'd made that decision more carefully myself. I've lost many years of simple daily happiness to that choice.
They cannot break the cycle by themselves. They need the help of a therapist. I was there, so I know.
My self esteem was in the negative zone when I met the man who is now my husband. Years of childhood abuse/trauma. Years of significant others who were carbon copies of my family. Because of my husband, I am now much more confident in myself. I have also learned to say no and stop being a doormat. I am many, many years into no contact with my family. All because of my husband. He never gave up on me and he never let me give up on me. I’m 50 and I finally know what it feels like to be loved and appreciated. It’s never too late.
There is a difference between people with low self esteem who have awareness of that, and those that don't. I find that people who aren't awarenof their low self-esteem can be very toxic without realizing (or maybe they do realize and that's part of why they're toxic)
Ho, well, I have one actually.
Sucker Punch, or any unprepared or unforeseen head impact. People doesn't understand that guys and pals fighting being prepared isn't as deadly as getting hit by surprise. If your muscles aren't ready for the impact you can easily get knocked out and fall limp on the ground, hitting it hard enough to break something vital and die. Also, if you have an unknown condition that get aggravated by the hit, it can also be over.
Never hit someone if you aren't prepared for the consequences. Never fight somebody if you can avoid it. A *bad* hit is all it take.
We had a case during COVID masking time period in my state where two guys got into an argument over masks. One guy punched the other. The punchee fell, hit his head and died. Just like that. The punchee was charged with 2nd degree murder under the same statute that Derek Chauvin was charged (to paraphrase, unintentional death while committing a felony assault). The dead man was a father and children's hockey coach, I believe.
Load More Replies...It is now referred to as a Coward Punch or hit in Aussie to replace the old term King Hit which glorified it
Your comment needs to be higher up! Idiotic behaviour should not be glorified!
Load More Replies...Guy in my country just died. Dad in his early 30s. Some bonehead did this to him in a parking lot.
And all those TV shows and movies where guys punch each other numerous time in the jaw are phony. One punch in the jaw can break it, knock one unconscious or kill you, and also will break the hand of the puncher.
My uncle got punched in the temple roughhousing with his friend when he was 25. Had a brain aneurysm later that day while driving and wrapped his Jeep around a tree. 45 years later we learned there's a genetic condition in the family, he certainly had it, and it causes weakened blood vessels prone to aneurysm.
I feel like I've met a lot of people who don't take bites and scratches from small animals like cats or little dogs as something serious. It just baffles me that they don't understand how bacteria works.
I was attacked by a cat (I still have the scars) and had a heck of a hard time convincing my doctor's assistant that, yes, I had a cat myself and knew how to treat minor scratches, but that these were truly an emergency and that I absolutely needed to come by now. She waved my worries aside, so I came anyway, and had three stitches, antibiotics and a tetanus shot. I hate to think what would have happened to me if I had listened to her.
Oh geez I’m glad you’re ok! Reminds me of the lady in the US who, IIRC, had her face or a cut or something licked by her German shepherd puppy and lost all her limbs due to a bacterial infection. Edit: it was hands and legs that she lost, my bad, here’s a link: https://www.livescience.com/66110-dog-kisses-infection-amputation.html
Load More Replies...A cat bite will _always_ be infected. Treat immediately with antiseptic solution. If any soreness or redness occurs and gets worse or fails to get better after an hour or so then get thee to your nearest medical facility. Septicemia can kill very quickly.
Cat bites are so bad. Especially if they get you in a joint. I have seen...things.😳
Load More Replies...I had a dog bite once in my hand, jeez, my hand swelled overnight like a blown-up vinyl glove. Antibiotics and an hour-long wound bath with betaisodona helped.
Same happened to my sister after she was scratched by a cat - it was a mess.
Load More Replies...Breaking up dog fights too. I had to save my neighbor from her dog (she was trying to break up a fight between her pit bull and German shepherd) and it cost me 48 stitches to the face!
It's not only bacteria that can lead to infections, even to amputations or death in worst case. If a small dog gently bites an adult's leg and it's considered "cute", be aware that it might be extremely dangerous if the same thing happens to a children's face! It also can cause a trauma or phobia that people suffer a life long from. Please be responsible and educate your pet accordingly (yes, that includes cat - that being said by a cat owner)
I sadly was one of them. Got a huge infection recently, thank god it cleared up.( All from a cat scratch)
I had a cat get spooked while he was in my arms, and he beat up my hand pretty good. Cleaned it up, bandaged it and thought I was okay. That is, until I got up the next day and my hand had swollen to 3 times the regular size and immediately went to the doctor. Had I not, I could have easily ended up with an amputation
Complacency. It's run so deep at this point that we just accept things as they are now. Assuming that it's the way things have always been so it always will be. At least here in the states. This good guy bad guy mentality has driven people to be comfortable in their belief that their side is the good one and the only way to keep everything afloat. Not knowing that their hard stick beliefs are the reason we are all getting more miserable and a lower quality of life by the day. Everyday we just sit around content with our system at hand because we've refused to do anything about it. No I don't mean in a "oh Communism good" or whatever, I mean we don't hold our representatives accountable due to complacency and they grow further and further away from being objective in progress and more so enamored in keeping things the way they are.
I was teaching a college freshman class on political philosophy, and we got into a discussion of unjust laws. Many of the students were quite opposed to some current laws or proposed laws. So I asked them what they could do about it. Answers: meditation, serenity prayer, try to ignore it and focus on their own happiness, vent about it online. When I listed alternatives - write a letter to your representative, call or visit your representative, show up to a protest, organize a protest, commit civil disobedience - it was like they'd never even considered these things. It wasn't complacency. It was learned helplessness.
If you live in the US & have enough time to post what you said above, you have time to contact your state's Senators & House of Representative & tell them of your concerns ... also contact the President. Google it - it's easy! Start your email/text with "To the honorable Senator ..." or "To the honorable Representative ..." or "To the honorable President ..." or "To the honorable Vice President ...," even if YOU don't think they're honorable. It will get their attention & put you in the top 1% whose text/email they'll check out! Be aware now! You must be careful with your wording, tone & content. I've been in touch with my presidents, senators & representatives for the last 50 years. And I vote! I'm doing my part. Are you fully doing yours? Give it a try.
If you don't register and vote in every election, YOU are the problem. When someone is treating you badly, how likely do you think they are to stop if you don't speak up? Exactly. You have a voice. Use it.
This is by Governments design actually. In the 1960’s people had ‘too much time on their hands.’ There were a lot of protests. Civil rights movements. So began the ‘tightening up and the gradual decline of the living standard.’ If it’s so gradual people won’t notice. Government and industry are hand in hand. From outsourcing jobs to save ‘companies money’ so consumers will pay more and earn less money…. Every single Corporation has to make increased profits every year, this means cutting jobs and wages. It’s truly disgusting. And, Capitalism is an ‘ism.’ It worked until oh, I don’t know, the 1970’s? And then people began spending, discarding as entertainment. Products are also designed to breakdown and become obsolete. It’s the Money Machine that is killing us all.
IDK that it's complacency, so much as we don't know what to do about it
Like the thousands of complete morons in Colorado who voted in lauren boebert "Gramma Bobo." Thanks for that Colorado

Herbivore animals, meanwhile predators would probably not see humans as worth hunting all the time Herbivores will see anything as a threat and go crazy.
A moose a horse a cow a donkey can kick you to death a lot quicker than you think, theyre not your best buds that you can just go and pet them like a classic Disney movie.
Just think of hippos. They're herbivores and cause more deaths than lions.
That's because they're emotionally unstable tanks with giant teeth. I'm not surprised.
Load More Replies...In some zoos, the deadliest animal is the zebra. Underwater is another example. I swam in an aquarium full of big sharks, the deadliest animal in that tank were turtles, which could crush you against the wall.
Turtle: "You merely adopted the water, I was born in it, molded by it."
Load More Replies...A horse kicked my great grandfather in the guts and he died. He was in his forties. My granddad, the oldest son, was only 15 and had to take over the farm with his mom. Neighbours taught him how to sow etc. Consequences for me: I was never allowed to drive a horse.
I drive horses for decades and can second your father. They are lovely animals but beware of the hoves!
Load More Replies...There were some animal related death statistics back in 2010-2011? Here in Australia, cows caused more deaths than sharks and snakes combined. twice as many as bees too. Be interesting if there were more recent stats, but yeah- no messing with the bovines in the paddock folks ( especially bulls and cows with new calves) and if you see a ‘stock on road’ sign… slow down, they are big enough they’ll go through your windscreen.
A male deer in heat is probably one of, if not the most dangerous animal in Northern Europe. I live on a pretty small peninsula in Denmark that is said to have the densest population of wild deer in Europe. We do not approach wild deer during mating season.

I hate those suckers. Unfortunately, they love me. And I can't take Malaria medication.
For some reason, they hate me. Guess I'm lucky?

Driving.
Every time you get into that vehicle you're putting your life at risk.
And this is why I don't get why there are so many unaware, ignorant and selfish drivers!!! You are driving a ton of metal at high speeds, it's like a weapon, use it badly and someone will get hurt.
Load More Replies...Absolutely! When the covid vaccine was new and people were getting their knickers in a knot here about how it was a risk they weren't willing to take, I had to point out that the most risky part of getting a vaccine was getting in their car and driving to the vaccination centre. Their concept of risk was just totally screwed up!
Load More Replies...This! And people give me s**t for eating what I want. Keep your eyes on the road Karen/Karl
Not every human being is meant to drive. The sooner everyone understands this, the safer we'll all be.
NO I have lots of air bags etc so if another car hits me I'm OK. but if I don't get in the car and walk, and another car hits me, I could be dead :(
Yet people still don’t give themselves plenty of time just in case of traffic etc. trying to make up lost time.
This! I have a license but I won't even think about trying to drive in a city.
Ladders.
I’m an emergency physician. Aside from motorcycle/car crashes and gunshots, the next biggest trauma I see is probably falls from ladders.
Ladders were always outsiders, no wonder they threaten to turn against us! Rise up against ladders!!
This. I work on ladders almost every day and we use ladders as tall at 32ft. When I see non professionals on ladders I think there should be a class to buy one. For the love of god, move the ladder rather than lean off them. If you tip the ladder goes one way. You go the other and you aren’t landing on your feet.
Running through railroad crossings, it might be the most idiotic thing some can do while driving. There is always that one chance you get stuck and then you get pancaked.
Ever see what a train could do to a semi truck? I've see what it can do to an unsuspecting person. Let's put it this way, he was carrying pizzas and then became one.
Pancake is better than stuff I've heard at my job (train driver).
Load More Replies...As a train driver I can tell you there is extremely little I can do to avoid running you over. You need to keep off the tracks and follow the rules. Here it is also on you to double check that no trains are coming even if the crossing indicates that there are no trains inbound.
Also know how to operate your car so good, that you don't have to think about it. That you can handle it in a panic situation. Also is refering to any crossings in general, or just one that indicates a train is coming? (Even as you say, always make sure non is coming).
Load More Replies...A county over from me just had 6 people die from being hit by a train. 3 were kids. They didn't stop at a stop sign at the tracks.
Load More Replies...Darwinism again - hopefully removing that problem from future generations
A friend who was a train driver said that in a race between a train and a car, a TIE is always a win for the train. Except for the psychological effect on the train driver.
Oh, yes. We had a rash of cases where people would run across the tracks in front of an oncoming train "for fun" (I'm talking grown adults who absolutely should have known better). Horrifying.
I’ve seen so many videos of people almost getting hit by trains you’d think they would learn
They are removing almost all level crossings in my state because even having gates that automatically close when train nears didn't do much to curb death toll.
In addition-taking family pictures on the tracks! It is against the law for a darn reason!! (in US)
Media monopolies.
Unfortunately, my home town is where he first clawed his way out of hell and began his fecal trail across across the world... so, sorry about that...
Load More Replies...This is a symptom, the disease is human behavior, apathy and stupidity. The fact that you are presented an option, doesn't mean you're obligated to accept it. You have a choice. These things don't just "happen to you"
There's a big difference between a monopoly and being super successful in your field. Do your research before claiming something is a monopoly. Example: just because one site is more popular than another for what it does doesn't mean it's a monopoly. Everyone is out to be the most successful, that's the whole point of competition.
That means you are not playing by the official rules. An actual game of Monopoly take about 90 minutes. It's all the extra rules people play with, such as money for Free Parking, extra money for landing on Go, and not performing auctions when someone doesn't buy a property. All those house rules makes the game play longer than it should.

Garage door springs.
I keep saying this. Any large spring, including those used your car's suspension.
What? I can think of no way a car shock absorber spring could hurt anything if it were not purposely disassembled.
Load More Replies...The springs to lift those doors are under insane tension. If one snaps and you get hit it can kill instantly
Load More Replies...Oh, Snap! This just happened to me last week when I was heading out in the morning. I hit the garage door button on my way out, and it started to lift up and then sounded like an explosion went off in my garage, puff of dust like smoke, and the windshield cracked where the debri of the spring mechanism crashed. The door crashed back down with a final bang. Absolutely terrifying. The shock of it before morning coffee was real! Replaced with tracks over the weekend.
And be sure to wait until the door is fully open before walking under a garage door with an electric opener. Mine had a catch that randomly would release and the door would crash down like a guillotine.
THIS! We actually just had our garage door springs replaced by a professional (because my husband likes to fix things and I talked him out of it) and that man was TERRIFIED because the springs the idiots initially put in were for a door twice the size of ours. He said he was very surprised that the door had not shot off the rails yet.
I always open my door from the remote inside the house. It was never for that reason but, it is now.
Cleaning the home. Many household chemicals can react with very small amounts mixing. A neighbor girl in grade school died from it actually. But to be fair she also had Asthma.
Bleach and ammonia, and you will knock yourself out. Don't mix chemicals
Load More Replies...Chlorine too. If I go to a pool house and the chlorine water gets into my eyes, they burn like hell and turn red like tomatoes. I'd prefer not to become blind so I stay away from pool houses now. However, I have an allergy to it too. Was a plague when I was still in school with swimming classes and the teacher really wanted me to open my eyes under water, not understanding why I couldn't and wouldn't do that.
I guess swimming googles where no available option?!
Load More Replies...Just buy 2* 25kg bag of Soda, one with the baking Kind, one with the strong Kind (gloves and maybe googles, because it is pretty strong) for your neighborhood. 20-30€ each. They can clean and desinfect and multipurpose for years with that amount. If you are feeling generous, add 20litres vinegar and 10 litres H2O2 1,5-3% , some Kernel soap, and you are basically set for most purposes at Minimum cost for you, your health and the Environment. Vinegar, H2O2 still have to be handled with care. Never use chlorine for small Home Pools, far to Dangerous and expensive, complicated tech to dose it properly. Look into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and salts! Much, much safer, no unpleasant smell and even healthy, if you add magnesia salts.
Load More Replies...That's why I use home remedies like baking soda, vinegar, citric acid, etc. Cheap and less harm for people and environment.
Bleach and ammonia produce chloramine gases when mixed. Asthma makes it a greater threat, but it's nasty stuff to the healthiest of people
Household products are notoriously toxic, same with air fresheners, fabric softeners. Preservatives, artificial colours, flavourings. SUGAR is a major cancer causing additive! Oddly, sugars found in fruits, vegetables are not. 8/10 tinned products REGARDLESS of brand contain BPA- a cancer causing chemical, manufactures and Governments don’t care. It is in plastic fast food wrappers, containers, cups, plastic food storage too. Nail polish, make up, the dyes in ALOT of clothing, upholstery, mattresses, rugs in particular, ( off gassing chemicals for years!).
Chernobyl exclusion zone. The amount of people that visit illegally is shocking and the disregard for their own safety and health is also shocking. Like there is a claw that was used to move nuclear waste and it was moved into a spot and left there and the amount of people CLIMBING TOUCHING AND SITTING INSIDE OF IT is insane… like that could kill you with a few hours of exposure. And also not to mention the amount of things that could radiate potentially deadly particles that people take as a souvenir is also mad.
I can count on one hand the amount of times I've been there. It's 13.
Let's not forget putin's army occupying the red woods in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in March-April last year (shortly after the invasion). Digging trenches, touching the radioactive soil and trees with bare hands. I previously thought that nobody could show that level of irresponsibility. Obviously, I was wrong.
I always wanted to go there, but I work with radioactive materials. The way tourists treat that place like a dystopian Disneyland is mind boggling.
I have actually been here, I have a few photos of myself in this plaza and with this hotel :) Pripyat is very overgrown and there were certain areas where they asked us not to touch the trees, plants, or dirt with anything but the soles of our boots. They told us of one girl who knelt down to take a photo in the wrong place, and her knee touched the dirt - she had to take the whole 4 hour bus ride back to Kyiv without pants because of the radiation. It was so incredible to be there (just a few weeks before the sarcophagus was put on reactor 4 in 2016) but the danger definitely humbled me
Load More Replies...Well if it's any consolation, the only people hanging around the exclusion zone at the moment are Russian soldiers.
Uh no. They left/were chased out last year. There are no Russian soldiers in the north of Ukraine.

I've heard conflicting accounts of how dangerous it is. On the one hand, tour guides have to really search hard to find anything radioactive enough to make the Geiger counter show anything more than normal background. Cornwall is probably more radioactive. Ditto many black sand beaches.
This isn't exactly true. There are/were parts that are fairly safe. It depends on many factors. Since the s**t useless Russians invaded they made a huge mess near the plant and now landmines and other dangers need to be dealt with.
Correct! After the 1986 disaster, many parts of Pripyat were covered with several feet of soil as well as other measures to reduce radiation (such as the sarcophagus over the reactor). It’s still fairly dangerous but as long as you’re with a guide and remember the rules you should be safe. Scientists can spend several weeks at a time there to research before having to leave.

Drinking water:
* Drinking too much of it.
* Brain eating Amoebas.
* Ingesting ocean water.
* Flint Michigan drinking water.
* Your cup of drinking water spilled onto the ground and its very cold there and it freezes and you slip on it and hit your head too hard as you fall.
* Fish farts.
Had a brain eating amoeba once. Poor little thing died of nothing to eat :(

That's at least little reassuring! What about your mouth? Swallowing water or accidentally inhaling water?
Load More Replies...That really depends on the water source... If you drink water contaminated by toxins, animal feces, or bacteria you are better off not drinking the water and finding a different source. Untreated water/contaminated water in certain areas can lead to cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hep A, typhoid, and even polio. Which those can be way worse than not drinking it.

Riding a horse.
I like riding horses and I agree, they can be lethal if you startle them.
I've seen horses startle at their own farts. They are not the brightest of God's creatures.
Load More Replies...Yup. I'm a very confident rider (not arrogant, I'm very aware of my limits!) but there isn't a chance in hell I would get on a horse/pony without a proper hat or handle one without proper footwear. They're prey animals with prey instincts and you have got to respect that - it only takes once. Also, I ride out on country lanes a lot and you bet we're both wearing multiple items of hi-viz. It's basic.
And it baffles me that so many people don't consider wearing any protection when riding. Not even a helmet. Doesn't matter what you're doing, if you're on a horse you have a chance of falling off and cracking your skull on something. Wear. A. Helmet.
I'm in two minds about helmets. Many Western riders don't wear helmets and I think a lot of injuries from horses are mainly back injuries, which is why eventers now wear inflatable vests. Having said that, I would wear a helmet if I were competing in any extreme horse sport (rodeo, show jumping, etc), but you also have to understand, people just working around horses on the ground have been struck in the head and killed when a horse lashed out a foot. Like in anything, there's an inherent risk in anything you do around a horse and you have to decide whether or not to accept that risk and to what degree you'll go in order to mitigate it.
Load More Replies...Don’t asssume you can just climb on one and ride it. Lessons are needed. From how to direct them where you want them to go, how to let them know to stop. How to ride if it breaks into even a canter. How to walk behind a horse without getting kicked. If you’re going on a guided trail ride, you’re likely ok. More surety of docile horses and the guides (hopefully) know how to get one under control if needed.
Please be respectful of the animal allowing you to ride it; they can sense/smell fear and anger and may react to protect themselves. Pet them, talk to them, and assure them you are partners and friends and you'll have a much better experience.
They can feel when you're fidgety. Horses are herd animals, so if one is nervous, the others get nervous, too. Once you transmit your nervousness to the horse, it's on the lookout for whatever danger is bothering YOU, so any surprise will send it running. It's not a magical connection or a sixth sense; it's your movement. A calm manner looks and sounds completely different from a nervous manner. Basically, the horse works like a polygraph machine.

Driving close to, or behind a semi truck. Not only because wind might make it swing your way, but all the components that could fail and fly your way. A drum could brake, a wheel bearing not in place properly making a tire come off, a split-rim tire blow out and hit you, and that's just scratching the surface.
I wasn't even very close to the semi (I hate tailgating), but driving behind one and we started going up a mountain. It was pretty cold out, but the roads were really nice and clear. All of a sudden a big sheet of ice falls off the top of the trailer and lands on top of my windshield. I was so lucky that my windshield didn't break.
My side view mirror got taken off by a retread piece flying off a semi tire. And retreads are VERY common practice in the trucking industry. (Cheaper than replacing the worn out tire).
Retreads are deadly and should be banned.
Load More Replies...And for godssake, don't cut them off in traffic! I witnessed a car vs semi collision. Car zooped out in front of semi. Semi couldn't stop in time. Car got pancaked.
I've found semi trucks to be relatively safe. You have better brakes than they do. The real dangerous three are being behind a poorly secured load in an open top vehicle. And behind a caravan. And behind a hire truck.
If I can, I pass as fast as is legal. I hate people who hesitate alongside these trucks. Seems like they get intimidated by the thing. GET BY and GET OVER.
Most of those things will not happen if the driver has done a proper circle check. There are good drivers and bad drivers. Always assume it’s a bad driver and be wary. But know that a fully loaded semi has a much greater stopping distance than a car. Eighteen wheelers can’t stop on a dime
Fentynal. People do not realize the absolute magnitude of the tiniest amount of it.
I used to have fentanyl patches when my back first went. The doses are measured in microgrammes per hour. Most other medicine is measured in milligrams. There are a 1000 microgrammes in 1 milligram. It really is that potent.
Amazing when you first wake up from excruciating surgery too - it works so fast! Though it was one dose and then on to morphine when on the ward!
Load More Replies...Fentanyl is about 50-100 times more potent than morphium. (Now carfentanyl is in the range of 10'000 (?) times more potent.) In any case this is a medication which has it's uses, it should be used and prescribed only when neded. And the patient needs to follow the instructions. Nevertheless like any other drug it is and will be misused. You always need to know the "pros and cons" of the medication you take, so please take a look at the information leaflet.
Pretty much any street drug now has fentanyl. We have a serious drug problem in the US.
This drug is a big problem where I live. Gotta watch out for used needles all the time. If one gets stuck it could be lights out forever!
Skiing. I was young and flew through multiple barriers completely out of control on a mountain into unprotected territory in Whistler, Canada. Had to be rescued by ski patrol.

I wish we could give you all of the upvotes. Almost everyone I know who has been injured while skiing have one thing in common: they didn't take lessons. Worse, they had some idiot relative or friend who was going to "teach" them. I was a ski instructor for many, many years, and I can truthfully say that not a single person I taught has been injured while learning. And that's not because I'm unusually good; that's just because I'm competent.
Load More Replies...Tried once. Just before beginning the second descent, I saw someone falling really bad. I had a panic attack and I told the instructor to leave me for a while, I'd get down when I'd be ready. No idea how much I waited on the top, taking deep breaths, trying to calm down. Eventually I started descending, painfully slow. I was ok. The guy who fell was not.
That's a really bad ski instructor. I was a certified instructor for years, and I pulled something like that, I would have immediately been fired.

They call them a ”pumpjack”. You see them in oil fields. The look like a big metal rocking horse. They move slow and don’t seem like they would be that dangerous, but they are. I tried to ride one when I was 12. It mangled my foot and I’m lucky that’s all it did. It required surgical pins down each toe into the middle of my foot, drain hoses, skin grafts and two separate toe amputations to save what I have left of my foot. You don’t want to mess with them. They will grind you to a pulp in slow motion. It’s all torque and no speed.
Keep away from any industrial machinery that you've not been trained on and have permission to approach. The bigger and heavier the more dangerous it is. Surely that much is common sense? Big moving things = big forces. Even a home DIY hand drill can rip hair from your scalp.

Electricity.
No, really? I didn't ever think that electricity, something that can fry just about anything living, could kill you.
A few years ago a guy was killed on Harry Street, Robertsham (you can probably Google it) trying to steal *overhead* cables. His body was still up in the cables when the kids were going to school and they thought it was hilarious and he "got what he deserved". Really, he deserved death for being a stupid thief? Everyone knows you wait until load shedding (rolling blackouts) and then steal the underground cables.
Home electrics probably. People underestimate the risk and knowledge/skill required and overestimate their abilities. It's the 'how hard can it be' crew. My husband is an electrician and so many people will have a go themselves and make hell of a mess. Some have had fires because of it. Yet the same people wouldn't dare touch the plumbing because they might get a leak or flood their house. Yes, that can be a horrible mess, but it's slightly less risk to human life. A lot of idiots out there.

Compressed air.
High pressure air can pretty easily pass through the skin and into the bloodstream, which is no bueno.
Yeah, no. Not the one in the photo. The risk of skin penetration starts in the range of 100-120 psi/ 7 bar, and it needs a very tight nozzle do be dangerous. As a reference, we are talking three times the average pressure of a car tire, and double the pressure of a truck tire. The OSHA limit for pressure at nozzle is 30 PSI, about 2 bar. The cans in the photo are at best 70 psi (nominal) for commercial-grade product, and most often half that. The real danger with those gas duster is environmental damage from ozone-depleting gases, health hazards from fluoroethanes inhalation and, the biggest danger by far, flammability of the gases leading to fires and explosions when sprayed on hot surfaces.

Pressure cookers. They can and have been used as bombs to kill mass amounts of people. They can also explode by accident. I will never use a pressure cooker because it is a literal ticking time bomb on your kitchen counter.
The newer instant pot cookers work on the same concept and can be very safe to use by following directions.

Load More Replies...They are not used as bombs. They are used as bomb casings. You put the bomb in them. Nor will they explode in proper use if in good condition. You might as well say 'I'll never use a car because car bombs, and the brakes can fail'.
Yes and no. Pressure cooker bombs work on the same principle as the smaller pipe bomb. The idea is that you acquire a low explosive substance - something that by itself just burns very quickly without actually exploding as such - and put it in an enclosure which can withstand fairly high pressure. Set off the chemicals inside, the pressure builds rapidly, that energy is stored elastically in the pressure container, and when it blows open, that's the bomb. That way, you can make a bomb without the trouble of getting hold of "proper" explosives. Without a pressure vessel, you won't get a "real bomb". I've provided no details beyond what's available on Wikipedia because doing so is a crime where I come from.
Load More Replies...My step-dad decided he had to use a pressure cooker to make some type of saucy stew. He made a big deal about how good it would taste. About an hour later there was a massive whoosh followed by banging and crashing from the kitchen. The top had flown off of the cooker crashed into the ceiling leaving a deep dent in the drywall and there was stew everywhere. It took so long to clean up. I never saw a pressure cooker after that.
My mom used one for years. At one point, making soup in one. A small piece of vegetable had closed off the pressure-release valve, pot overheated and safety valve melted as it should. 4 liters of vegetable and tomato soup shot through a pin-sized hole and covered the kitchen sealing. This did not stop her from using (a new) one after that happened.
Working near heavy machinery. I’ve been an operator and I work around booms, skid steers, and packers regularly. Being aware of your surroundings is a must but even then that might not save you. Last week a worker got crushed by the lift of a zoom boom at my room mates worksite. Unsure of their condition post incident.
Not sure I'm enjoying reading this thread as much as I thought I would...
Working with small machinery too. I absolutely will not disturb some sawing, cutting, drilling, etc. Distract someone at the wrong moment and the consequences can be terrible.
I was operating a forklift in a lumberyard, retrieving a load from above. Someone had put an unsecured load above that one so when I went to lift the load below it, the guard on the forks lifted the load above and all the loose lumber began to fall…straight at me. Luckily, the cage above the driver cockpit was made of reinforced steel so it bounced off that. Those two by fours could have done some major damage had it not been for that cage.
Lithium ion batteries. Almost impossible to extinguish when on fire.
"Small lithium batteries contain very little lithium, so they can be doused with water. To put out large lithium-ion battery fires, use a foam extinguisher containing CO2, powder graphite, ABC dry chemical, or sodium carbonate. In battery pack fires, each cell may burn on a different timeline. Place the battery pack in a protected outdoor space to allow it to completely burn out. If a fire cannot be extinguished, let the battery burn out in a controlled way. Prevent the fire from spreading by soaking the surrounding area with water."
They rapidly discharge. I put what I thought were two fully discharged AA lithium ion batteries in my pocket to take home and recharge. My car keys shorted them out. It felt like a flamethrower was in my pocket when the rapid heat up occurred.
Social solitude.
Choosing to be alone is so different than being alone when you don't choose it. Think the difference in the words "loneliness" and "solitude." There are many studies detailing how damaging loneliness is to physical health.
Unless one is a creative type. Most creative and artistic activities require lots of time alone. The creative process can be so mentally absorbing and so pleasurable that one does not miss humans at all. I find composing electronic music to be more emotionally satisfying than living with a human who often complains about everything.
Have you been paying attention the broad quality of people walking around today? No thank you.
Power outlets. All it takes is an earth current and something metal plugged in. You touch that metal, you're dead. That's why if your outlets around the house are starting to die, you need to call a sparky and make sure to avoid using any other outlets that may be connected to the dead ones until everything is sorted.
While working on electricity in our house (my husband has been trained to do it), we accidentally lost a phase in the wall (many wires connected, not so logical). As the socket was dead, my husband tried to fix it. Turned off the meter for only this socket, found the phase and zzzzzttt... oh, never mind, that wasn't the proper breaker. Now the socket works (and husband is OK, fortunately).
Always make sure to test! I say that to the electrician who comes here. I think it's the right one, but will NOT bett your life on it! Fluke20T11...estare.jpg
To be fair, it can happen anywhere. I had encountered a crappy extension lead in Belgium that sparked when I plugged a proper plug into it. In my own house, I had a socket that would cause interference whenever you plugged stuff into it, and would occassionally trip the RCD. It was just a loose wire and easy fixed. Switches can also spark when operated under load.
Load More Replies...Not quite sure what is meant by an "Earth Current", but any vaguely modern competent electrical installation has built-in protection. You'd have to be quite seriously bad at DIY, or rather quite good at overriding said protection, to enable that sort of situation to happen.
"Earth current" I think means "Current flowing from the electrical outlet to earth, presumably via a human body on the way.". Mains electricity everywhere is potentially lethal. Don't mess with it. Always get a qualified professional to test and maintain it. Always ensure that you've got the most up to date protection, particularly RCDs (RCCB, ELCB, GFCI)
Load More Replies...Power outlets only pack enough power to throw you across the room and burn your hand. Ask me how I know.
You got lucky. The shock you got caused muscle contractions that threw you away from the source. If you had got unlucky, the electricity could have caused your lungs to stop working properly and perhaps sent your heart into ventricular fibrillation leading to death. US mains electricity is powerful enough to kill. It's one reason that all domestic mains electrical outlets should be protected by residual current circuit breakers (RCCB, RCD, GFCI, or ELCB) which trips the power when it detects an imbalance in current flow between the phase and return lines. When functioning properly, they are highly effective at preventing fatal shocks.
Load More Replies...That's certainly a better thing to do than me just going "oh, I'm sure it's fine..."
That's why I think you're all crazy for using 220 - 240V in your standard outlets. Parts of Australia allow up to 264V (-5%/+10% of 240V). I'll take my 120V and be happy for it.
It's not the Volts that kills, it's the Amperes. A usual electric fence for cattle has around 9000 Volts here. We also have 400 Volts on the 3-phase, those are the bad ones, but they also have alot more Amperes. But you should also have a 'Residual-current device', then there're much less risk for electric shock!

I really don't agree with this one. While taking them in large quantities can be detrimental and possibly fatal, but this can be said for nearly any drug over the counter, not just pain killers. Taken as directed by the label or as instructed by a doctor and you should be fine unless you have an allergy to one or the other. This post feels very much like disinformation without further context as to why they listed them as 'surprisingly dangerous' since any medication is dangerous in large quantities.
Antibiotics.
Possibly not what OP was meaning but: Always finish a prescribed course of antibiotics! Don't just stop taking them when you feel better, you have to finish the whole set. Also, antibiotic resistance is a real thing, so once you finish the amount set by your doctor, don't keep taking them!
And be sure to eat foods high in the good gut bacterial as antibiotics kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad.
Load More Replies...Antibiotics must be taken only when prescribed, following the prescription until the end, and they can (rarely) cause very awful side effects.
Sorry, but if I have the choice between the Plague and antibiotics, I'll take the latter.
Side note: Plague antibiotics really suck but are worth it. Had to take them once (levofloxacin) for an ungodly combination of mono, strep, and antibiotic-resistant staph. The scariest part of taking them: for the next 18 months after finishing the treatment you can have sudden tendon rupture, most commonly of the Achilles tendon. Talk about walking on eggshells.
Load More Replies...Only take them if needed. GP's also need to stop prescribing them for viral infections and anything else apart from what they are needed for.
GPs the world around have long known exactly what they're good for, and many years ago stopped prescribing them just to make the patient feel better, which used to be not uncommon in some countries. The real problem is where populations do not have access to GPs but do have access to antibiotics - it's still possible to buy them in some parts of the world without a prescription from a doctor.

I appreciate that in the last 10 or so years it has been more common for doctors to prescribe probiotics along with any antibiotics. This wasn't at all common when I was a kid and I feel bad for my parents for it.
