What I find so fascinating is that this is Nr 3 (or 4?). this version is not that old, mid 19th century, and the king made the decision to go 'ok, let's tear down most of the old caslte and build a new on on top'. Mindboggeling. Also for the architekt. Ok, he was a genius, but still: 'Please go and do an adequate replacement of our main seat that we've been using for 700 years'

Actually, it's not a "real castle". It's more a fancy residential building than a fortress. Indeed, it was built less than 200 years ago over the ruins of the real castle.

Are you conflating it with Neuschwanstein, the fairy castle which inspired Disney? It WAS massively rebuilt in the mid 1800s, but it most definitely is a fortress, even if it wasn't rebuilt with military strategy in mind.

Medieval churches in England were incredibly brightly coloured inside-we're so used to seeing them with plain stone, marble, whitewashed walls and bare wood, but that wasn't how they were built. When churches have been renovated, there's evidence that very bright paint colours were used, along with golf leaf and other embellishments, and the statues were all painted to look colourful. It was a way of making sure all the peasants and serfs were overawed at the magnificence of the church. These days, we'd probably think it was gaudy or tasteless, we're so used to seeing them all colourless.

Very ethnocentric comment. Lots of cultures are into ornate decorations for their religious buildings. Being Protestant it looks garish to me. But I understand to others it's beautiful and reassuring. And I can appreciate the craftsmanship of it.

Was originally built as a church - "Hagia Sophia" comes from the Greek for "Holy Wisdom". When Constantinople was conquered, rather than destroy it, the conquerors made it into a Mosque.

Fascinating building. It was built to enclose the tall, water pumping machinery for water from Lake Michigan. It became a symbol of "rising from the ashes" after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It survived, though the buildings surrounding it all burned to the ground, and contrary to claims that it was the only building to survive the fire, areas of southern and western Chicago were untouched by flames.

I discovered why so many houses were built like this with the upper storey overhanging the lower. It comes down to property tax… back in the day the owners were charged by the ‘footprint’ of the ground floor. So people got creative and designed houses that had more space on the second floor without having to pay the extra taxes.

The walls are some kind of polished stone that has fossils of ancient spiral shaped invertebrates. The mural was a New Deal project during the Great Depression (1930s). The building now houses 3 museums- history, natural history, and a children's museum. Also an Imax theater and a lovely gift shop. Definitely worth checking out if you are ever in Cincy. a garden pavilion - you would hold smaller, more intimate, parties here than you would in your main estate house (not in this one anymore as it is just a few meters from the main parking lot of the "the château de Bagatelle" which is now open to the public, which is why you never really see it from any other angle than this so you don't get the fence and the parking lot in the shot, and always taken with an ultrawide lens as this would already have the photographer with their back against the fenc )

"Castle" refers to anything from palace to manor house to fortified residence. It does not need to be a royal castle. I have seen a castle ruin in Scotland which used to be a very small one-family-building.

I'm from Barcelona. There are other amazing things in the city, like "El Palau de la Música Catalana", by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The outside is beautiful but the main theater inside is a wonder. There's also an old hospital, "L'hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau" by the architect "Lluís Domènech i Montaner" which is also a catalan modernism building and both the outside and inside are incredible. Don't get me wrong, Sagrada Família and other Gaudí's buildings are beautiful, but he's not the only representative in this style and there are many more dreamy buildings in the city.

I'll assume that it's a bit like the Flatiron building in New York. Taken from this angle, it looks as if it only has a two-dimensional front.

This is one of the places that they used to film "Spencer". I don't know why, maybe to save money or because they didn't get permits? But the castles shown in that film are not in GB.

The photographer is playing with our brains. The building is a wedge shape, with the narrowest section being 1.5m wide. We are looking at the narrow end. :o) The building splay out to create a decent sized library.

Looks like a parking garage. Plain ugly. And, who would like to live directly over an open noisy highway. I know buildings where there's a highway (Autobahn) below, but usually in a tunnel.

    RoanTheMad

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's an office block, not residential. There's also actually a structure in place around the tunnel/road to massively reduce sound and vibration, the road isn't actually connected to the main building, and is connected by the pillars you can see just on the edge, and is more like a bridge through. It's also not a highway exactly, just an off ramp.
