Hohenzollern Castle, The Ancestral Seat Of The Imperial House Of Hohenzollern, Built On A Hilltop Overlooking The Autumn Forest And The Villages Beyond, Bisingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
What I find so fascinating is that this is Nr 3 (or 4?). this version is not that old, mid 19th century, and the king made the decision to go 'ok, let's tear down most of the old caslte and build a new on on top'. Mindboggeling. Also for the architekt. Ok, he was a genius, but still: 'Please go and do an adequate replacement of our main seat that we've been using for 700 years'
Load More Replies...Actually, it's not a "real castle". It's more a fancy residential building than a fortress. Indeed, it was built less than 200 years ago over the ruins of the real castle.
Are you conflating it with Neuschwanstein, the fairy castle which inspired Disney? It WAS massively rebuilt in the mid 1800s, but it most definitely is a fortress, even if it wasn't rebuilt with military strategy in mind.
Load More Replies...Everyone always wants to see Neuschwanstein. There are not many tourists who know there are fare more beautiful castles in Germany.
Give us a list please. Then we can plan our travels.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu Temple, Nadi, Fiji
I love how colorful Hindu temples are. There was a really beautiful one near my hotel in Bangkok.
Medieval churches in England were incredibly brightly coloured inside-we're so used to seeing them with plain stone, marble, whitewashed walls and bare wood, but that wasn't how they were built. When churches have been renovated, there's evidence that very bright paint colours were used, along with golf leaf and other embellishments, and the statues were all painted to look colourful. It was a way of making sure all the peasants and serfs were overawed at the magnificence of the church. These days, we'd probably think it was gaudy or tasteless, we're so used to seeing them all colourless.

It is so hard to contemplate how people were able to build this.
And now they can’t even build an apartment complex up to code. It shows the impact greed has on architecture.
Load More Replies...I think those who downloaded this comment misunderstood it. I'm sure it's meant to imply that this is like a giant tree house, and refers the treehouses of yesterday that were supposedly built by boys who then put up "no girls allowed" signs.
Load More Replies...To anyone who buys into that nonsense about Christians not really being persecuted so much in Rome: this wasn't built for the mere aesthetics.

Sahasra Bahu Temple, A 1100 Year Old Temple In India
This is what people did before they spent all day playing games on their smart phones.
On one hand, it is amazing, but on the other hand, it is bit too much for me.
Very ethnocentric comment. Lots of cultures are into ornate decorations for their religious buildings. Being Protestant it looks garish to me. But I understand to others it's beautiful and reassuring. And I can appreciate the craftsmanship of it.

The pools and fountains were emptied because of the California drought. Sadly it doesn't look like this anymore.
I think that was only the Neptune pool, which had cracks and is undergoing restoration. The indoor pool I think is still filled and my understanding is that the Hearst family still host little parties

Someday my bathroom will look like this and every time I step in to bathe, the sound that always plays when like a god walks on screen or something (think Thor Ragnarok, the girls singing in Loki's play) will gently waft through the chambers. Then I will dump out all that water, and do it again the next day lol
Very stunning, but all that blue on blue must be a bit disorientating.
Only one person ever used this, Johnny Weissmuller, when he stayed there. Once it was opened to the public, the staff were thrown into it, on their Birthday. The open air pool was used as a backdrop in many sword & sandal Hollywood epics, including, "Quo Vardis".
That's not true. The pool was used by more then just one person

I never liked the outside, thought it looked like someone had thrown mud at a church. Then I went inside. I literally had to sit down for half an hour to even grasp it. It's one of the most amazing places I've ever been in. Also the light and acoustics are just mindblowing.

I think there are so many beautiful places in the world, it’s mostly best to not visit the same place twice, but Barcelona is one of the places I’d make an exception for. The cathedral alone is worth it!

The Circus, A Ring Of 18th Century Large Georgian Townhouses In The Historic City Of Bath, Somerset, England. Designed By Architect John Wood, The Elder
In my opinion it looked more beautiful when I went during spring, with all the bright colours of the trees. And if you stand in the very centre and spin around in a slow circle it creates a very cool effect to your eyes.
The local stone they used for the buildings looks like gold in the late afternoon summer sun, it's stunning!

Chicago is a beautiful city. Been there many times, and it has a very unique skyline
I agree and the Art Institute is one of my favorite places I've ever been.
Load More Replies...Fascinating building. It was built to enclose the tall, water pumping machinery for water from Lake Michigan. It became a symbol of "rising from the ashes" after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It survived, though the buildings surrounding it all burned to the ground, and contrary to claims that it was the only building to survive the fire, areas of southern and western Chicago were untouched by flames.
The turn of the century water towers are pretty impressive across the US. Like the Highbridge in NYC: highbridge...6a-png.jpg

Gothenburg is known for some of the greatest Scandinavian Metal. Somehow this looks a bit too cheery.
It’s Wingårdh actually, a Gothenburg architect who likes himself a bit too much (and all his buildings have leaking roofs 😝)
Wooden Houses In Bergen, Norway
I discovered why so many houses were built like this with the upper storey overhanging the lower. It comes down to property tax… back in the day the owners were charged by the ‘footprint’ of the ground floor. So people got creative and designed houses that had more space on the second floor without having to pay the extra taxes.
Brings back memories from 20 years ago and my mom reading from a guidebook "when you turn into the narrow streets..." Lofoten Mortsund rorbuer picture was on the cover page.

Looks like a parking garage. Plain ugly. And, who would like to live directly over an open noisy highway. I know buildings where there's a highway (Autobahn) below, but usually in a tunnel.
It's an office block, not residential. There's also actually a structure in place around the tunnel/road to massively reduce sound and vibration, the road isn't actually connected to the main building, and is connected by the pillars you can see just on the edge, and is more like a bridge through. It's also not a highway exactly, just an off ramp.
