I'm a university prof and I've never called a student stupid. I think most of us try to re-explain things in a different way. But there's often another side of the story - my colleague got an email yesterday from a student basically saying "I don't understand anything and I failed the exam because I haven't been to class and haven't been keeping up. Can you help me?"

To find out more about the project and why students never get bored of seeing hilarious memes online, we reached out to the creator of University Life. They told Bored Panda they got the inspiration to start the project in 2019. "At first, the account acted as a way for me to share memes and things I found funny about university life, as I am also a student studying in Birmingham, UK, at the moment."
The founder revealed that ever since they started the account, it grew very quickly. You see, thousands of people find their content to be hilariously accurate and utterly entertaining. "So it acted as a small side project/hustle and a way to help students have a bit of a laugh at life at university," they said.

Once a year or so I'll have a nightmare where I am in college but forgot I was in college till halfway through the semester, so I'm failing miserably in every single class. Confirmation bias at work. Find data that supports the conclusion instead of a conclusion that is based on the data. In our lizard brain, its a superior strategy to avoid spending resources (time, energy, etc) re-investigating things we know are true so we can spend those resources on other things. If you "know" those wolves howling every night are too far away because the evidence shows they have never attacked before when the howls are that volume. You don't send scout groups out every night looking for them and risk one to frostbite Instead, those same scouts go out the next morning under the warming sun and kill a deer. Our same lizard brains are prioritizing the things that are a danger right now and rationalizing off the other things to allow you to concentrate. The wolf at your door is more important than a bear you "know" is hibernating.

Exactly what's wrong with school today. You are given your position by the teacher and sent off to find supporting evidence instead of reviewing all the evidence and drawing your own conclusions. They literally grade the independent thought out of the students. We must take back our schools!

I've been on both sides of this and I think the context of the e-mail originally sent and the teacher makes a huge difference. When you're teaching an intro lecture class with 400 students and you have 200 a day to get through, you only have so much time to reply to all of them. If you spend even 1 minute on every e-mail, that's 3 hours and 20 minutes just answering e-mail. If a student writes an e-mail asking to switch to another lab to be with their roommate, you get a "sure" because its an easy yes/no problem. That way you can spend 45 minutes working on a solution with multiple back-and-forth followups for someone asking how to make up 5 labs and a midterm because their mother just passed and reply with a well-written, sympathetic solution. Then there are professors who think their time is worth more than students and their response of "sure" means "leave me alone, I don't care".

No wonder why so many of them repeatedly turn to the online meme culture. When you have the annoying group assignments, irrational class schedules, challenges of remote learning (all while trying to find your true interests and passion in life), there are plenty of things to discuss. "I think students enjoy the memes because they can relate to them, and this means they can see how they are funny," the creator added. "It also allows them to see the humorous side of university life that can sometimes be quite stressful and scary."

Does not look like my old computer labs. Really, I am not nostalgic for card punch or dot matrix printers.
"Most content, I find myself on the internet," they mentioned. "I give credit where I can, such as with the reels that are on my account. I am always open for students to submit memes to me and I will post them," the founder encouraged their followers to share the hilarious jokes and memes they find or create.
They revealed the account is hard to manage sometimes. "But as I have been doing this for a while, I am used to it and know the best methods." There are always the occasional small blips and bumps in managing the account but having so many great followers who appreciate their content makes it all worthwhile.

Researchers surveyed 748 people online to see whether viewing different comical photos influenced emotions, information processing, and the way they’re coping with the pandemic anxiety. The participants looked at a variety of memes and had to rate the cuteness, humor, their emotional response, and to answer if these jokes made them think about COVID-19.

My favorite is anything technology related that demands extensive knowledge on something that was just invented. Just googled "Unreal Engine 5 jobs" and the first one that came up was looking for a Senior Developer with 10+ years of experience using the engine and work on two published titles. The engine came out in May 2020 and there has yet to be a game released using the engine.

My psych lec had a different idea. She reckoned people can only pay attention for as long as they are old. So if you're 18 you can only pay attention for 18 minutes and she arranged her classes with weird little ice-breaker type games peppered in every 20 minutes or so.

I may not be in Uni but I am in TAFE. I'm paranoid about getting sick and missing my lectures coz it's only 2 lectures a week and for less than 6 months. So each lecture is extremely important. Especially the Pracs which is once a week. Would probably feel differently if it was a more full time course.

Lectrues, o the most useless thing in school, no matter thy class. One time in like 5th grade, we had our second fire drill. We got a looong lecture ... I mean, a bunch of 10 y/os who see acorns, what were we supposed to do? Ignore them? The teacher told us to drop all of our acorns, but I had some in my pocket.. hehe. During the lecture, my teacher asked, "Which teacher were you with in the first fire drill?" (ye my school 5th grade is middle school) Everyone was saying Mrs. Burrows and we were supposed to raise our hand. The teacher called on me to answer who. I was like, "Hehe, I wasn't here that day..." Everyone laughed hard. The teacher said, "Why did you raise your hand then?" And I said "I didn't raise my hand, you called on me" (long story short, I got detention)

I started putting the date first and then the file name and save another copy of the same exam-/essay-file every day. This helps if I screw up (and believe that what I deleted three days ago is what I definitely need back) AND shows the progress. When I wrote my thesis, every time I felt that I haven't gotten anything done yet, I opened a file from a couple of weeks ago and saw the progress. Game changer for me.

Try it at 30 years old with a toddler, partner, working PT, volunteering at school & being active in 2 honor societies (including traveling)! It's a wonder I didn't drink myself to death, hubby didn't kill me or leave me and my son is (fairly!) normal. It was community College and after the first year (4 classes & 2 summer) I didn't take a full course load, 2-3 max.I have no idea how people can go full time, work 20-40 hours and still manage to sleep and get stuff done

TWO WEEKS?!?!?! My school's spring break is the third week in March. My community's (we host an international golf tournament) is the first full week in April. I went back at 30 with a toddler, working PT at his daycare, filling in at old job occasionally (for extra $), and being very active in my honor society (Phi Theta Kappa-officer 5 years) so I could get transfer scholarships. Even with son's dad (now hubby) there the whole time, it was hard as hell sometimes. Took a while, but got my AA. But its definitely worth it. One day at a time

Yeah, some people can do that, some can't. In any case it means prioritizing and sacrificing, too. You can work part-time or full-time and study, but something in life is always falling behind then. My "falling behind" was my health. If I could go back in time, I'd tell my younger self that it's okay to take a while longer till the final degree, but it's not okay to ignore the pain just to make it somehow.

Nah, this isn’t just uni. Being sleep deprived, depressed, and not getting anything done is high school too. Can’t wait for uni when I have to work so I can pay for tuition and pay for my own bills 😭

A a middle school student I can say it's not just high school and uni. I got home 4 hours ago and I'm still working on homework. I should grab some coffee and mentally prepare for the all nighter thats ahead. I am burnt out to a crisp and my teachers dont care. It's either pass the class or pass away smh. And Mrs. B***h isnt helping either. Shes mean asf and tried to hit one of my friends once for no reason. And she doesnt even update grades so everyone has an F in her class. Seriously they should just fire her. Umbridge 2.0. Anyways it's been 6 minutes which is 5 minutes longer than I'm supposed to be on break so time to get back to it 😭

nah, it's great. Most important thing is to ignore the people who bully you about jobs and employment and choose subjects you ACTUALLY care about. unfortunately school doesn't teach many subjects universities do, so, you end up not knowing what they're about before you get there, and then they pressurise you with co-requisite courses (e.g. have to do math to do physics, etc.). SO my recommendation is look at your most likely university - whichever you think you might get into - and the courses they offer - then google those topics and see which you care about. Studying stuff you care about makes you excel without effort.

Welp, much of this applies to 8th grade too. Can’t wait till uni 😃 And on a slightly unrelated note, I just planned out my hs courses and even though I’m still not really supposed to know what to do with my life yet it still stresses me that I have 0 inkling of what I might wanna do.

These sound to me like kids who took topics that were too hard or too boring. Choose the topic you are interested in. Work relevance is totally not important. Your passion can be monetised if you are really passionate about it and can see the way to monetise it. I don't mean cynically, I mean actually doing the job you love. I've been lucky in that respect. Managed to always find work that was OK to good, based directly on my skillset and qualifications, and skillset/qualifications based on what I actually cared about.

The story about you can't find work after college is really about finding something that will support you AND that only comes from networking. You rarely find a matching job and get the job after 1 interview as a first job. While you are at uni and are being supported (hopefully!!) you must do as much as you can to network with high power people. Make yourself useful. Learn side skills. Volunteer. Do charity work and do intern work for free. Really it's fine. As long as someone is covering your food bills. If you can stay with your folks try to do so. Don't go to a far away uni unless you have to (eg parents are abusive).

I've got a fair few qualifications from a few different unis, but between the years of 1983-1994. Exams are monstrous. I never liked them, but my extreme good fortune is that I have a phenomenal memory, which meant I could just read and memorize enough before an exam to do fine. But I get the impression that nowadays, uni is just exam-level pressure all the time. It sounds like you get a lecture where someone spits out information for an hour or two, and then assigns you to inhale hundreds more pages of info and then assigns you multiple projects to prove that you did indeed absorb the information. It's so transactional. So much of our learning was in-lecture discussions and in-depth seminars to think and share ideas. It was less about spouting out info and more about applying it, expressing your own ideas, and I was a language student. Seems like education has just sunk into a trap of selling information to people who can't actually afford it.

hmm it depends on the course and the lecturer. I never did this to my groups and I taught recently (couple years ago)... I was interested in concepts and application, not memorisation.
