Our cultural differences are what make us unique, and they’re what bond us with others alike. What we see as ordinary always depends on people, place, and context and surely it will differ from one person to another.
That becomes super obvious when we leave the comfort of our home behind our back and go on vacation. Ask travelers how often they've been in uncomfortable social situations, had weird conversations, and found themselves strangers in a foreign land, and they will tell numerous stories.
Now this Ask Reddit thread has recently gained a lot of attention, amassing a whopping 28.3k comments and 27.8k upvotes. “What things do Americans like and the rest of the world not so much?” someone asked and people started sharing their own experiences, impressions and stories that show us once again just how relative things can be.

Tipping culture.
It's crazy how much people defend an absolutely terrible system.
Tipping. A way to continue slavery and make it legal to pay staff below the minimum wage.
Commercials about pharmaceutical pills. "Ask your doctor about taking xyz... side affects can include (everything).
Wild!
This is not "liked by Americans"; the pharmaceutical companies pay to air the commercials.
Opinion signs outside their houses. Like "in this house we support...". I find it weird and unusual.
We have a “Love is Love” sign in our yard, but only because a few houses down from us has a sign that’s pretty much the opposite meaning.
College sports. Particularly football and basketball.
The rest of the world loves soccer, but nobody gives a hoot about it at the university level.
Walking inside the house with shoes on.
As an American, I have NEVER worn shoes in ANYONE's house! I don't know anyone who does! I'm not sure why people think this is an "American" thing.
Load More Replies...Apparently this is an unpopular opinion on this thread, I've always worn shoes inside (except when I had a roommate who didn't like it), and it's actually almost never caused any genuine cleanliness problems. If you've got mud or snow on your shoes, you take them off at the door. Otherwise, things are fine. *shrugs*
I find it weird that people expect their guests to keep their floor cleans, unless they have a baby or toddler crawling around down there. I hate going to a nice dinner at someone's house and being asked to take my shoes off. Now I have to walk around in bare or stocking feet? But usually I'm over for a casual evening and I don't care. In my house, I tell people to do what is comfortable. I can clean the dang floor.
Load More Replies...That's not an American thing. Taking shoes off religiously every time you enter is normal in some countries and cultures, but across Europe and the US you'll find a broad mix of shoes-off and shoes-on households.
I am from Denmark, and have never been to a house, where people have their shoes on inside on a regular day. A few times, if people throw a party, I have seen some wear shoes inside.
Load More Replies...South African here... we all walk with shoes in the house... nothing weird about that.
How many rainy/snowy days do you get down there?
Load More Replies...We put mats on the doorstep to wipe your shoes. Many find mopping and vacumning, which orderly people do anyway, preferable to the thought of having someone's dirty socks/feet on their carpet/rugs. Work shoes, etc., are not worn in the house any more than more than dirty work/sports attire is acceptable when sitting on inside furniture. You don't need a large brain to figure this out, if you know what I mean.
American here. We don't do this at my house, my parents house or my friends houses. I seem to remember taking my shoes off in everyones houses my whole life.
Yes. Mg only exception is, if my ankle is bothering me, I wear sneakers inside. But I have indoor sneakers just for this purpose.
Load More Replies...I feel like this is a regional thing. I lived in places where it was an automatic shoes off or when coming into a new persons home you ask if they would like shoes on or off🤷🏼♀️ also just an FYI keep in mind that some people have neuropathy or other medical conditions that need to wear shoes for their health
I wear shoes to sleep... where i come from, we would have to be ready to bolt at any given moment from intruders. Have you ever tried to escape a gunman without shoes on?
This is because the rest of the world trudges around in animal feces all day, and don't want manure on their dirt floors.
I'm American and if you do in our house this you will be told to vacuum and mop, loose all privedges for anything, and given extra chores. We even wipe our dog's feet with baby wipes.
When I was young my siblings and I would get an earful if we took our shoes *off* in the house. If while shoeless we stubbed a toe or stepped on a LEGO my dad would yell, "this is why you wear shoes!"
I just can't grasp my mind around this, don't you have slippers of any kind? I hate to walk barefoot, but we all have at least two sets of slippers (summer/winter) + for guests. Not the soft ones, but Birkenstock type of footware.
Load More Replies...My number one pet peeve! People, spit, and dogs pee on the sidewalk. I seen a documentary where this lady was made to leave her home. The crew, cleaned her home. She came back, and left her shoes on as normal. Sat her baby down in the middle of the living room floor (all hardwood). They sprayed luminal, and used black light to find her foot prints, and swabbed one. The test came back with meningitis, and several other bacteria!! Don't wear your shoes in the house!
I have a friend who hails from Thailand. She was the one that got me to ban shoes inside my own home. It makes SUCH a difference in the dust, vacuuming ease, and general cleanliness.
But....what if I dropped glass? There's usually SOMETHING in the floor I don't wanna step on without shoes.😬
This is mostly a culture issue but for me it comes down to the details. If you have actually muddy dirty shoes then yes take them off. But if they are only a little must from walking down my cement driveway then I would prefer you keep them on I don't want to have your nasty feet smelling up my house.
i am an old lady and I have very painful feet so cannot wear shoes, but here in UK most people do not remove their shoes when entering a house, unless the shoes are really dirty or muddy etc.
I blame Mr Rogers for this perception, I don't know anyone that wears shoes in the house
Thats what doormats are for. I take my trainers and socks off when I get upstairs but I always wipe my feet before entering.
So every house in America is basically dirty. One should not walk bare foot in an American house, its like walking on the side road, its DIRTY!
Nope, most of us actually clean our houses regularly, including vacuuming and mopping. Not to mention our shoes don't get that dirty since we have paved roads and walkways.
Load More Replies........ I have literally never worn shoes in my home or anyone's home in the US? Why y'all judging us on something that isn't actually common. Y'all went to one Americans home & you think we're all like that? Or are you judging us based on TV? I didn't think I had to say this but Tv is not real!
Maybe it depends on the region, but I live in the US and where I am, nobody takes off their shoes at the door. So its not uncommon. I've literally never met anyone who takes their shoes off inside, except to make themselves comfortable.
Load More Replies...If I have an armful of groceries, I’m not gonna carry them to the threshold of the door and then put them down to take my shoes off before finishing bringing them inside. It’s one thing to take off your shoes before walking around someone else’s home, but my house is cleaned regularly so I don’t mind.
I’ve never understood this. Beyond filthy. ✅ Walk in a public bathroom and spread the germs around your house ✅ Walk through any number of things and carry all of that into your house, where it coats the floor, to become germs dust that coats your furniture, bedding, kitchen counters…. How do people possibly not comprehend how unsanitary and dirty this is? Not to mention, picking up ticks in the treads of shows and on clothing…. Worse still not washing their cat’s/dog's feet after letting them outside or walking them. I ALWAYS change out of clothing I have worn outside into clean house clothes, wash my face and my hands.
I am in my early 60s. I was brought up to believe it was rude and presumptuous to take off your shoes in somebody else's home. It meant that you were way to comfortable there as a guest. It's one of the many things that have changed over the decades that I have a hard time getting.
Not all of us do, though. My family prefers that people who come into the house take their shoes off when they do so, but we don’t require it. We would also never force people with disabilities to remove their shoes if they need to keep them on as well. I feel like this is one of those issues that has resolution on a case-by-case basis.
I find this funny. Grew up running around barefoot summers. Inside outside. Constantly barefoot ed around the house. Then in shoes, same thing. Only time I changed foot wear inside was winters. Never knew anyone who made folks take off shoes. Entryway mats are made with a purpose. Unless I have been stomping around in a barn or mud my shoes stay on. I know how to use a good doormat.
This isn't everyone. My family, and most people we know, don't do this. Then again, I walk around barefoot and bring in the outdoors anyway.
I'm American and everyone I know does NOT wear shoes in their house
This is regional. rural families don't track dirt all over the house.
I don't wear shoes or socks inside mainly because I'm a narwhal
Friend moved to Croatia and is annoyed, because it seems shoes indoors are the norm there.
In my experience, only for guests at larger parties, in child-free households. We usually have a couple of (2 to 10) pairs of guest slippers. Although, there is this thing that's kind of a folklore here, "NO NO don't take your shoes of please", similar to "NO NO don't go home yet, have another rakija, it's not that late" even though it's 3 a.m.😅so it shouldn't be taken seriously
Load More Replies...I don't do this. I don't like tracking in dirt and negativity. Shoes go off at the door.
In Canada, it's considered polite to say to guests, "You can keep your shoes on." It's to tell them that we think they're clean 😅
I was at a native village in Panama and they had buckets of water outside each house to wash your feet before entering. natives more civilized that the US. Punta Valiente.
This one is wrong. I grew up in a no shoes house and currently live in one.
I am American and I don't like wearing shoes in the house. I don't like wearing shoes period. But I mean you have to.
Why shouldn't they? Americans never go for a walk. They go by car. And yes, vacuum cleaners are sold all over the country...
Threatening to press charges on people....
And being suspicious of everyone.
imperial units
(edit: fahrenheit aswell as celsius are good for certain scenarios so ill omit the former)
Cheerleaders
It's definitely a sport and takes a lot of athleticism. People train from an early age to be on cheer squads.
Driving everywhere. Anywhere you go, you go in a car.
But I suspect for many, other options are so rare they don't think about them even if they do exist.
Soooo accurate! I work 50 minutes away from where I live (41 miles). Public transit isn’t an option. Even for close shopping… it’s not an option. The nearest bus line is 4 miles away.
Peanut butter and jelly
A lot of us were fed this as kids, so it tends to be a comfort food now.
Root beer and ranch dressing. I brought some to Germany and had my friends try it and they said the root beer tasted like medicine. They politely tasted the dressing with a celery and said "hmmm, interesting" but the look on their faces was that it was terrible ha.
Garbage Disposals
Just shove that turkey carcass in the disposal and run some warm water behind it
God damn delis. At least out of all the places I’ve traveled to the US by far has the best delis. I don’t know if I can live somewhere without a great Jewish or Italian deli.
Corn syrup
There is a time and place for it like pecan pies and cheap pancake syrup. But not every where all the time.
This used to be much more prevalent in the US but food coloring. When I moved from Japan to the US, I was surprised at how colorful their foods were.
These days Americans are now more keen to organic natural stuff so I see it less but it took me a while to realize that blue raspberry is not a real thing.
They made them blue so they wouldn't be confused with the red ones (cherry or strawberry)
My mother [British] thought casseroles were weird and disgusting. Once her British friend came to visit, and asked that we not go to a restaurant "where all the food is mixed together in an awful jumble."
I love most casseroles.
Since casseroles were originally French, maybe she was just cherishing the ancient enmity
My sister is visiting the US from Europe and sent me a picture of a small coke and asked "why is it so big?" I could see old glory flapping in the wind, boys.
Biscuits and gravy
And you’ll get a bunch of different variations of somebody’s granny made it only a certain way…so that’s how you know it’s authentic! Bacon grease? Sausage? Strong black coffee? Just never say you made it from a powdered mix!
Free public restrooms. I know they're gross but they are nice to have.
Was gonna comment but changed my mind so I'll just say Have a great day pandas wherever you are!
Handicap accessiblity. Old buildings/towns in Europe are nice, if both your legs work.
24 hour stores. I was in Chicago working with a colleague from Switzerland who suddenly realized around midnight that he needed a network cable to configure a mobile router for a job the next morning.
I told him that I'd meet him in the hotel lobby to drive him out to Walmart.
He was happily surprised, as he had forgotten about the US's famous chain of Walmart stores.
Bankruptcy laws. It's a major reason why America has historically had some of the highest rates of small business growth and entrepreneurship. America is one of the most forgiving countries when it comes to personal and corporate bankruptcy (student loans notwithstanding).
Comparatively, European countries are much more pro-creditor which severely hampers any sort of investment that's even somewhat risky.
Americanized Chinese food. No one has us beat in that category.,
I might get downvoted, but... Kind of wish people would stop complaining about "Americanized" Chinese food. Lots of dishes were invented by Chinese-Americans way back in the early 1900s because of the war. It may not be authentic Chinese food, but it is authentic Chinese-American food.
I'd like to say optimism, even if it's blind sometimes. The CAN DO attitude is extremely strong. I would also put belligerence up there for better or worse. That "Get the f**k out of my face, I'm not paying for / doing that" attitude. Whether you actually can or not, the American culture makes you feel like you can really do anything. Again, it's a double edged sword but you'll seldom find an American who's just going to lay down and take someone's s**t or heed someone who says (to your aspirations) "You can't".
Free soda refills at dine-in places
Corn dogs?
OMG I LOVE CORN DOGS! I used to consider them a luxury because I only ever got to eat them at my grandparents house.
Marching bands. If you’d played the flute in a marching band at my school you would have gotten pelters but in the US you can become a state hero.
Oh boy, I thought I missed it but it’s time for BoredPanda’s weekly America is a backwater cesspool and all Americans are slack jawed yokels post. Honestly though, BoredPanda staff, this is just getting incredibly nasty and sad now. I’m originally from Scotland and now live and work in the US, and am starting to find all the US bashing on this site tiring and disturbing. It isn’t funny or cute— it’s plain lazy and pure clickbait. You have good writers with fascinating backgrounds- use them and do better. You are starting to lose a lot of readers with articles like this. What is happening to this site anymore. From the constant censorship to banning people for different opinions…users don’t feel welcome here.
I could not agree more! It's not fair to us Americans! We are not nearly as bad as people think. It's just the bad ones you hear about!

I agree. This isn't everyone in the U.S. And what's up with trying to rag on the food? Peanut butter and jelly? Biscuits and gravy? Yeah, they may not be your thing, but there's alot of food from other countries that they just love, but sounds just god awful.
Load More Replies...Contrary to the media narrative, we Americans generally love our country and are grateful to live here. I agree with you that MANY Americans are warm and kind-hearted people. And of course we're not all the same. However, at the same time, MANY of us are disappointed in our government.
