You have to respect the company you work for. You can never be late, never question anything and do an exceptional job every day. You must give multiple weeks notice before taking any holidays or quitting. But if the company decides that they’ve had enough of you, well, you could be unemployed at a moment’s notice!

It’s 2024, and it would be great to believe that society is finally fair and equal. But that would be far from the truth. There are still plenty of frustrating double standards affecting us all, so Redditors have recently been calling out the ones they’re tired of. Below, you’ll find a list of double standards that people no longer want to accept, so enjoy reading through and be sure to upvote the inequalities you can’t stand either!

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On I saw a post on a Facebook group I'm in recently. It was a selfie of a mother with her little boy in the backseat eating a pudding cup with no spoon and she had captioned it "making sure he's making his future girlfriends happy" or something along those lines.
I was disgusted by it, my boyfriend laughed. He tried to tell me I was being stuck up and a prude about it. I asked him if I was a father posting a picture of his daughter eating a popsicle and captioned it similar about making future boyfriends happy would you feel the same way? He looked like I slapped him in his face but he instantly got what I was saying.
Sexualizing children in any capacity is gross af and it even happens to little boys. People just need to do better and let kids simply be kids without putting sexual undertones to it. So f*****g weird.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On Being a morning person and getting up early to get a bunch of stuff done, then going to bed early, is considered virtuous and mature. Being a night person and staying up late to get stuff done, then sleeping late the next day, is considered disorganized and lazy. Even if you did the same amount of work and slept the same number of hours.

I have colleagues who work 6am to 3pm, and people constantly chirp about how efficient they are. But when someone at my office asked if they could work 11 am to 8 pm because that fit better with their body’s energy cycle, they were mocked for wanting to oversleep like a teenager, and the request was denied.

This should be higher, like for me I'm far better at any work I have to do after eleven, it's not a bad thing or a good thing, imo it's just a thing lol and people shouldn't shame for it.

I'm sure you probably just wanna say amen, or something like that, but putting it this way is at least mildly annoying. "ThIs ShOuLd Be HiGhEr!" is essentially saying "I should get more than one vote" or "everyone should agree with me"

I agree, I’ve always been made to feel guilty for being an evening person. I was genuinely shocked when I found out that a lot of the morning people in my family actually go to bed at 9pm. So when they get up at 5am, they’ve actually spent 8 hours in bed, which is more than I usually get. And on top of that, the ones who shamed me the most (mother and grandmother) also usually took additional naps in the afternoons like toddlers.

What time of the day or evening you are most energetic depends on your chronotype and it is largely determined genetically, so apart from fine-tuning, not much can be changed. Evening people have to adapt to the world of morning people and it is a complete lie that an evening person could become a morning person. It causes the same problems as, for example, switching to summer time/winter time. I'm an evening person and I can get out of bed in the morning, as long as nobody expects anything sensible from me before noon.

This! I'm a complete night-owl and do a lot better when I'm doing things later, and I feel like I do more. But when I sleep in I'm constantly lectured and called lazy. If you work better earlier or later than others, it shouldn't matter as long as you're doing your best work, right?

As a morning person, I prefer it when people are off cycle from me and start work later, because it gives me a solid block of time at which I'm most productive to get sh*t done.

peoples' natural circadian rhythms are different, and I don't understand why we have failed to adjust societal standards to it. differences in bodily rhythms are classified as disorders despite being a significant percentage of people and having no ill effect other than "you're not productive at a convenient time for us."

My favourite shift was 4pm to midnight. Was given a taxi voucher to go home (no trains), slept in until around 10, and was fully functional for the start of the next shift. Also had some time for shopping during the day. Plus paid 15% shift loading! Only downside was missing evening TV shows, but I barely noticed, and the issue was fixed by buying a VCR. Was not a massive fan of midnight to 8am shifts, however.

Some schools in the UK are now allowing teenagers to start later and finish later to fit in with their energy cycle. I got so fed up with having to get up at 6am for work that I switched to working constant night shifts. One time my boss asked if I could come in for a meeting with him at 2.00. I’m a night owl,, I had a team of guys who worked all across the U.K. sampling water quality at thousands of locations, we had to cover all hours of day and night so we got random samples, I had early birds who did the crazy 6am silliness, Dads who had to do the school runs and guys like me who loved the peace and quiet of sampling rivers and treatment works in the wee hours of the day, it was bliss. At the end of my run 4am or whatever I’d email the guys their schedule for the following week and then they’d have a day or so to work out what they wanted to do / which areas of the country they fancied working in, of course we couldn’t accommodate every lifestyle every week but I wouldn’t make an early bird suffer a midnight sample if I could help it. We benefited from flexible work and the early birds and night owls left each other alone! PS emails only got read during their work hours, your private time ain’t paid for!

I'm only bothered by this when someone makes plans with you to meet at say 10am or 11am for brunch, but consistently cancels because they stayed up until 3 or 4am and then miss their appointment with you. Or the friend that you can only make plans with if it starts in the afternoon because they are asleep all morning. I've got a kid, I'm up at 7am, we can't wait until 1pm for our first meal of the day.

This is a false association mixing 2 different things together. The first is hours you keep. Humans are more aware and capable when they get a certain amount of sleep, and our bodies’ sleep cycles are biologically tied to the day/night cycle (with some exceptions). The other component is group vs individual work. Almost every job out there involves multiple people contributing to a single larger job (think building a skyscraper). Jobs like that require coordination, and that means people working together at the same time. If you don’t like those restrictions, find solo work that doesn’t require cooperation with others.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On I solely raised my daughter as a single father from the time she was a year old until she was almost six when I married my wife. The number of people who have asked about my daughter's mother just to reply with "Oh, she must have had PPD." or "There must be a mental illness involved." or "Maybe she will come around in a few years." is absolutely staggering. Like no man, she just decided she wanted to go party instead of being a mom to our child. No child support. No financial or emotional contribution. Nothing. Hell, I couldn't even get a copy of my daughter's health insurance card when her old one expired because "I wasn't on the paperwork" despite the fact that I was the one who filled out the paperwork for it at the hospital the day after she was born.

It's infuriating knowing full well that had the roles been reversed, and I'd have been the one to leave, I'd 100% instantly be considered a deadbeat father.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On We live in an extroverts world.

In many Western cultures, being outgoing, sociable, and outspoken is often celebrated and encouraged. It's seen as the norm to want to chat, network, and be the life of the party. But when it comes to introverts who may crave quiet, solitude, or just less social interaction, the script flips.

It’s socially acceptable to nudge the quiet person in the room and say, "Why don't you talk more?" But imagine telling a chatty person, "Can you be quiet for a bit?" It would be considered rude or offensive.

This double standard underscores a deeper societal bias towards extroversion. The noise and buzz of constant interaction are often valued more than the quiet, reflective spaces introverts thrive in. It's like we're saying one way of interacting with the world is better than the other, when in reality, both have their strengths and should be equally respected. In a world that can't stop talking, sometimes we forget the power of silence and introspection. - An extroverted introvert.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On The double standard between women, especially teenage girls, being fans of things, and men being fans of things.

It’s deemed as somewhat normal and almost to be expected than men go absolutely mental over sport, especially things like football, to the point that when there are football games on the local police are usually on standby to deal with the riots and fights that usually happen. And that’s just kind of seen as part of it and to be expected and is just people being passionate.

On the other hand, if you get a group of teenage girls getting a bit excited over like, idk, a BTS concert or a Taylor Swift show or something, suddenly that’s deemed weird and stupid and they get dragged for it.

It’s literally the same thing. The latter is also far less disruptive yet is the thing that is always demonised. It’s not a new thing either it goes back as far as like The Beatles and Elvis where it was just passed off as ‘ridiculous hysteria” meanwhile you’ve got a brexit geezer going absolutely feral because Manchester United lost.

Lowkey pisses me off a lot that anything women and teenage girls like is demonised yet things like sport get a free pass.

Dude, I'm wearing lipstick, mascara, eyebrow pencil and face powder. My face is literally fully covered in make-up. But apparently to them that was as 'no make-up' as their faces. They are good colleagues and I don't mind it (and I like wearing make-up, I truly think I look better with it), but it kinda amazed them just how much make-up it takes to look groomed as a professional woman.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On This is probably small potatoes, but it’s kinda crazy that people are comfortable demanding height minimums on dating sites and just in conversation. Quite a few tinder profiles say ‘must be over 6ft’. It’s the only demand on a physical attribute that is commonly casually stated. It’s totally okay to feel that way, but it seems kinda rough to remind every short guy swiping that he has limited options. I’m over 6th and it still kinda pissed me off to see it. Never really done the dating site thing, but is it, or is it not, acceptable these days to also state preferences for eye or hair colour, hair length, even weight? If not then I think that's the real double standard.

I’m American (so I’m not sure if this happens in other countries) and Christian people when they sit at your dinner table and do the guilt thing right before you eat saying “Wait, arent we going to pray first?” And even the non religious people look guilty and pretend to pray. It took me until my 30’s to realize the double standard if I were another religion and sat at their table and insisted we pray to my god, they likely wouldn’t take so kindly to it. Now I say “you’re welcome to pray but I’m going to go ahead and start eating”

Seems impolite. I would wait till they are finished praying, but not pray myself.

American problem. In the UK, it's quite difficult to fire someone. There needs to be gross misconduct on the employees part and even then there's a strict disciplinary process that needs to be followed. You could be be facing an employment tribunal if you don't.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On That in the US, disabled people need more money to afford healthcare, but they aren’t legally allowed to have more than like $2000-$2500 in assets if they’re on disability. The idea that bullies are bad but we also have to toughen up and learn to take it sucks. Maybe we wouldn't have to be "prepared" for the cruel world if everyone was actually raised to have a little empathy.

If you make any mistake with money like overdraft, miss a payment, forget to pay tax, you get royally screwed and have to often pay even more in penalties and get no say in the matter. But if the banks, business, or insurance f***s up they owe you nothing and you often have to fight to get what you owe and often still lose out in money and time

Men being abused physically by women is funny. For instance, the trailer for "Anyone but You" had Sydney Sweeny sucker punch her love interest in the balls. If the man sucker punched her in the privates, I doubt anyone would've laughed.

I really don't know where people get this idea that men aren't pressured to have children. Maybe men talk about it less, but you're being willfully ignorant if you think parents don't pressure their sons to get married and have kids. All those comments you mentioned, I've heard from relative strangers as well as my parents.

Female genital mutilation is illegal in most western countries (as it absolutely should be) but half the US and 25% of Canada STILL support mutilating boys. Mutilating anyone’s genitals should be illegal.

Somebody Just Asked People To Post Examples Of Double Standards, And 45 Responses Were Spot-On The justice system. There’s definitely multiple justice systems depending on things like class and race. While it’s definitely noticed, it’s not like anything is actually being done about it so by practical standards it goes unnoticed.

Romance and love between straight people is perfectly fine and normal to depict in children's media, in fact many many Disney movies end with a princess kissing a prince, but if we show *any* hints at all that a character is gay that's *perverted* and *unacceptable* for children.

I think this is perpetuated by the media. When was the last time you saw a character with bipolar disorder living a normal life with a job and family instead of being a psychopath or murderer? Or someone with schizophrenia whose symptoms are managed with medication and only see what's actually there? Movies and TV shows do almost nothing to promote understanding and acceptance of severe mental illness.

One time a Man unfamiliar with our facility accidentally used the Boy’s locker room (instead of the Mens) to change before working out (middle of the day, no kids around because they’re in school) and everybody freaked the f**k out. (I 100% know it was an honest mistake. The guy was so embarrassed because of how the staff reacted.) While on the other hand - adult Women routinely used the Girls locker room because ‘it’s too crowded’ (or whatever the excuse, etc). This was allowed by management for a looong time. Finally got that policy enforced equally when I confronted it after we all had the implicit bias training…

Edit- probably file this under r/unpopularopinion, but someone asked - and it is what it is
To be clear, the policy was ‘Only adults accompanying young children that need assistance are allowed in the Youth locker rooms’

Any sports or concert events where the woman's room line is a mile long, women can use the stalls in the men's room and no one cares. If a guy went into a woman's room, he'd come out with a high heel in his a*s!
