Over the long weekend, Texas and other places in the US have had a random spell of extremely cold weather.

As you can imagine, for a region that doesn't see snow at all, up to eight inches of it is somewhat of an anomaly. And it did cause a great deal of disturbances, with power outages and ongoing rescue operations.

Plus, the National Weather Service (NWS) stated more than 150 million Americans were now under winter storm warnings, which makes it all the more stressful for Texans and other residents alike.

But some people on social media are finding the Texas snow idea somewhat of a meme source since these two things sound like the least compatible thing on the planet. Meanwhile, other Twitter users have already apologized for poking fun at the Texas snowstorm.

The unprecedented winter storm has been everything but funny as it continues to wreak havoc on Texas and other places across the US. Normally winter-averse cities have been suffering from freezing cold because the jet stream has changed and ushered Arctic air above the US and Canada borders.

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced that more than 150 million people were under a winter storm warning, winter weather advisory, or ice storm warning in 25 states, from southern Texas to northern Maine. The widespread storm has caused about 11 deaths which were reported in Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Louisiana.

The storm also caused a lot of concerning disturbances, leaving Texas and surrounding states in crisis. First, the high demand for electricity in the state has caused the power grid to fail. Rolling blackouts left 4.3 million people in freezing temperatures without electricity.

Rolling blackouts have been imposed in some areas to conserve power for hospitals, police, and fire stations, leaving over 4.3 million people without electricity. In addition, the Sunday storm knocked out almost half of the state's wind power capacity that makes up one of the main sources of the state’s electricity.

On top of that, icy roads caused traffic incidents and people are now advised to avoid traveling as much as they can.

Yeah, Russia did something similar to that and sold public roads and utilities, etc to the oligarchs. They did nothing to improve those services. In fact, they got much much worse. Neglected and allowed to crumble, in many cases. So, privatization is not the answer. The answer is for those with the means to pay their fair share of taxes, which is the revenue that pays for public services. Been robbed and want a cop? Tax revenue pays their salary. House burning down and need the Fire Department to put it out? Tax revenue pays their salaries. Need an ambulance to get to the Emergency Room? Taxes at least used to pay for paramedics and ambulances. You want these services—-and the wealthy take as much advantage of them as the poor—-when you need them? Pay your damn taxes, one-percenters. The rest of us do.

Wholesale prices went up by that much. Most people don’t pay that and any electricity consumer not part of the geographic area of a co-op or muni is free to choose a flat rate per kWh contract from retailers.

This clown is as bad as Trump and Qanon with platitudes, assumptions and no facts The winterization standard as authored by the NERC for the so called “national grid” following an investigation into 2011 winter storms is NOT mandatory. The winterization of our power plants would have prevented this - but since that standard at the federal level isn’t mandatory per the NERC, the notion that it would have been different is just false. https://www.nerc.net/standardsreports/standardssummary.aspx Texas isn’t the only place to use an ISO - the “privatization” you are citing. Which by the way California has one, as does the Midwest and the Northeast. And “deregulation” has zero to do with safety or emissions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deregulation_of_the_Texas_electricity_market?wprov=sfti1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_transmission_organization_(North_America)?wprov=sfti1

Nope. Read the NERC standards. NERC authors the mandatory standards enforced by the FERC for a “national grid.” Winterization, is not yet mandatory for the federal grid. And deregulation of electricity in Texas has zero to do with this sort of thing anyways. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deregulation_of_the_Texas_electricity_market?wprov=sfti1

No, he’s a gas-lighter worse than Trump. Deregulation has nothing to do with safety, reliability or emissions. Being exempt from the FERC by not crossing state lines means nothing. The standard for winterization which would have prevented this is not mandatory per the NERC - to be enforced by the FERC. And privatization? More than half of the grids are run by a private entity known as an ISO. CALIFORNIA has one.

They even privatized the networks?! Privatization of the production is acceptable (provided you are sure the government can produce enough in case of emergency anyway), but the networks... Some services are too important and too complex to let private corporations manage them.

Private electrical grids are not really the issue. MS, AL, and GA all have regulated private power companies that own the grids in the respective service territory. No major issues and fast reaponse to the severe weather as these companies answer to both the shareholders (most of whom are employees or clients) and the state PSC which regulates how they operate and how much they can charge.

Texas’ wind power crisis in Arctic temperatures led some conservatives to blame wind energy for the state’s wind power outage. But in reality, freezing weather posed a problem to other forms of power generation too, like natural gas and coal-fired power plants.

According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, “The ability of some companies that generate the power has been frozen.” The strain on Texas’ energy system has risen even higher, with Texans using more energy to heat their homes than ever. ERCOT reported that the state reached record winter power consumption on Sunday evening.

Luckily, 20 hours ago, Greg Abbott tweeted some much-needed good news about the snow crisis in Texas. “UPDATE: 400,000 more homes had power restored this morning. Expect more during the day,” he tweeted.

If you never get snow, then you don't have snow plows, snow shovels, salt trucks, snow tires, etc. How are they supposed to "Just move the snow out of the way"? (Edit: I get that these are jokes. I'm just saying, as someone who has lived in the South my whole life, I can not tell you how many times I have had people who moved here from colder climates say things like this in total seriousness. Like full on angry rants about how stupid and incompetent we are because we don't have snow plows at the ready for the snow that hardly ever happens.)

"Reviewing the preparations and decisions by ERCOT is an emergency item so we can get a full picture of what caused this problem and find long-term solutions," Abbott added.
