Internet detectives are never asleep and will continue to expose people sharing what they thought applied to others, yet in reality, unknowingly described themselves. Whether the subject matter touches on politics, human rights, or any topic in between, these posts haven’t gone unnoticed and were shared on the subreddit r/SelfAwarewolves.

Today, we have collected examples of people confidently sharing their thoughts, only to be humbled by the users in this online community. Or worse, stay ignorant of their mistakes. Either way, let us know your opinions on these claims and which ones made your eyes roll the most.

To learn more about self-awareness, Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Kinga Mnich, a social psychologist, who kindly answered our questions. Read the full interview below.

Alfie Evans had an incurable neurodegenerative condition, he would not have survived the flight to Italy without risking further brain damage. Once in Italy, they would have placed him on life support and he would have remained like that until he died. It must have been so difficult to know that your child is never going to be well enough to be able to leave the hospital.

My parents had to deal with that with my eldest brother. He had a degenerative condition too (though he out-lived doctors estimates multiple times) and eventually was sent to hospital where he was intubated. Due to low muscle tone/lack of gag reflex, he was able to be conscious during this time and we had a couple of weeks where we had to decide whether to keep him on it for however long it would be before he couldn't even live with this, or take him off. It came down to quality of life and we chose to let him go then. After this experience, because of how hard it was for him, my parents decided that when my youngest brother (who had the same condition) was near that point, rather than going to hospital and onto intubation, we would let him go at home. When it happened, we still got time to say goodbye at home, including family friends etc. I believe they made the right choices both times.

I think, in every country, taking care of war veterans and their families when they need help should be considered a given. If we’re sending people to the hell that is war, it’s our damn responsibility to take care of the human consequences of that war. I think helping vets should be considered a part of the cost waging war. Shame on politicians -in any country- who use the soldiers when it suits them, and then kick vets to the curb when they’re not ‘useful’ anymore.

Nowadays, there are more self-aware people than ever before, making it easier to spot those who are clueless. Dr. Kinga Mnich has shared her thoughts on the significance of self-awareness.

“Self-awareness is a central concept in social psychology, referring to the ability to recognize and understand one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Self-awareness involves reflecting on one's motivations, beliefs, and values, and being mindful of how one's actions may affect oneself and others. This is especially important in the context of online interactions, where the dynamics of virtual communication are quite different from face-to-face conversations. The lack of self-awareness in online interactions often enables people to bluntly attack others without being aware of the consequences. Sometimes content can be internalized as one's own belief system due to exposure without reflection.”

I think all forms of birth control, including surgical, should be completely free of charge, free of sermons, free of judgments. Taxpayers will come out ahead because we won't need to support others' unwanted children and their relatives, including schooling, medical, housing, food, clothing, and sadly, courts, police, and jails.

I was 17 in an upper-middle class neighborhood in a Texas city. I went to PP to get the Pill. I was given my 1st PAP test and an rx with 1st 3 months supply for free. Even though I was still a minor they took care of me w/o involving parents at all, not sure why, but some Texas law allowed it for reproductive care. I don't live there now, and my daughter lives in another state, too. I am so sad that young women have lost this crucial service. Ok serious question; What constitutes consent to be objectified? If a man walked up to you and asked for permission to think you are attractive wouldn't you call him a creep? Sometimes women wear sexy outfits for attention how does a man know when it's ok to give that attention? It's maddening.

Sadly, there is one group of people that research shows is more dangerous to children and sexually abuses more children than any other group: members of the clergy. If conservatives -regardless of country- really cared about kids’ safety, they’d immediately start rewriting some laws to restrict the unmonitored access that f.ex. priests have to children. Sounds rough, I know, but the numbers are what they are. “What you do to one of the least of these, you do to me” (Jesus, Matthew 25:40) implies that Jesus identifies with the oppressed and abused, among them, of course, children. Many members of the clergy seem to conveniently have ‘forgotten’ that part.. (For context: I’m not a hater of religion, I’m spiritual and religious myself.)

Some countries are doing that. In Australia, most churches (not Jehovah's witnesses but the other top five denominations I think) now have the same/similar restrictions as educators. They have to do safe church/child safety training, not just pastors but any members that have contact with children like sunday school teachers, kitchen volunteers and others.

Notice, it moved on to something else that is meant to level the playing fields a bit? In a few months it will probably be pickle ball because pickles are not actually used.

Now, knowing that we cannot evolve further as people in life without at least a bit of self-awareness, we asked how people can develop and maintain mindfulness. Dr. Kinga Mnich replied: “Self-awareness is about understanding oneself, one’s strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. It involves looking inward to understand better how you can improve yourself and your relationships with others. The easiest way to start becoming self-aware is by taking more breaks before responding to something and asking yourself questions such as: Why am I thinking this? Am I really feeling this? What am I feeling? How is this connected to my values and beliefs?”

I have a rare auto-immune, diffuse scleroderma. 66% of people who have this illness and who contracted COVID before the vax were extremely ill. 16% died. I foresaw this and completely isolated myself during the pandemic. Got the vaccines and boosters when they were made available, contracted COVID - and I WAS FINE. I more than likely would not have been fine were it not for the vaccine. Interesting tidbit here is that there are similarities between what severe COVID and scleroderma do to your bodies. Another tidbit- due to the COVID induced immune dysregulation you are more likely to develop auto-immune diseases after COVID, one of them systemic scleroderma and I wish this on nobody, it is considered one of the most, if not THE most severe auto-immune disease. Please people, keep up your boosters.

In 2021, some rightwing fanatic idiotically said, "instead of a vaccine, what if they weakened the disease so people's body could learn to fight it?" Seriously, some brain damaged trumpkin said that, then went on to continue opposing vaccines.

Do be fair to the green poster, many people thought the purpose of vaccines was literally to stop you getting the disease, not to reduce the severity/duration. Like you get the smallpox vaccine and you never get smallpox. It's understandable to be wrong from that POV.

It can be funny, sad, or even infuriating to see people so unaware of their actions that they manage to project on other people. Dr. Kinga Mnich sheds light on the causes behind such behavior.

“There are several psychological mechanisms and biases that cause people to unconsciously project their own traits or behaviors onto others while remaining unaware of their own actions. One such mechanism is projection bias, where individuals attribute their own thoughts, feelings, or motives to others without realizing it. This happens because people tend to assume that others think and feel the same way they do. Unfortunately, this bias can also lead to intolerance and discrimination because personal thoughts and beliefs are being understood as the only reality and truth.

Another contributing factor is cognitive dissonance, which occurs when individuals feel uneasy due to holding conflicting beliefs or attitudes. To reduce this discomfort, they may project their own undesirable traits onto others to maintain a sense of consistency in their self-image.”

It's because Republicans are greedy. They don't want "their tax dollars" going to pay for anyone else, be it for birth control, abortion, food stamps, kids free lunches at school, unemployment, disability, etc. They just hide it under twisted religious belief and what they call morality.

Conservative means conserving the status quo. Which means they don't want any wealth transfers at all. Of course they took advantage of wealth transfers themselves, they just refuse to acknowledge that....tell some fairy tale about dragging themselves up by their own bootstraps because they're so legendary. Hm? Oh...allllll taxes are wealth transfers. Why u think conservatives are against taxes?

Part of it is in the mass brain cell of conservatives, being poor is a blamable offense. They are poor because they are "lazy" or "don't want to work." Not because they're lucky to make $15 an hour at one of their three jobs.

However, we don't see those who are starving in the richest country in the world as bad. It's always pull yourself up by the bootstraps, but how can you do that if you don't have bootstraps?

And no, I don’t agree that it is all neglectful parents who let their babies go hungry, I remember my sweet mama telling me about how bad it was during the depression and how awful it was not having enough to eat, even though her parents did their very best to make ends meet. I think the minimum age for everything should be 25. Booze, tobacco, legalized substances, joining the military, possibly even marriage. Yes, I did almost all of those things before the age of 25, but I wish I had waited, then maybe I wouldn't be a (recovering) alcoholic. I've convinced my daughter to wait for 25, and I'm so grateful.

You're probably going to be downvoted for that comment, but I do agree with you. That said, it's a horrible catch 22. It's better to start the various treatments younger when it comes to the end result. And of course on the other hand, as you point out, does an 8 year old really know what they want and who they are? There are already articles about people who are getting reversals for treatments they received as children. So obviously at least some change their mind.

And lastly, Dr. Kinga Mnich shared how the phenomenon of being "called out" or "exposed" for lacking self-awareness influences people's behavior or attitudes toward self-reflection: “It can go either way. It can lead to a moment of awakening and desire to learn more about themselves. Or it can increase the subsequent behavior because someone feels shamed and pressured.”

To Oddball, the first step in losing rights is allowing politicians to make a lifelong career out of politics rather than cutting them off at 8-10 years. Effectively, they know they've got your vote simply because they throw a short term tax break your way every few years. Other than that, they don't care one bit about you or your rights.

I think the problem is the media play it as the different sides saying "We want everyone to have guns" -v- "We want no one to have guns". That's never going to work. If it was framed purely as "We want any sane, law-abiding person to be able to have a gun if they want." it might be able to gain traction.

When covid hit here hard, and zoom was not working for our kids, we decided that I would homeschool. I was a first grade teacher (though my credentials had recently lapsed) and felt equipped to carry through with the curricula of the year. I started doing research to make sure I would be following the requirements of homeschooling. There were no requirements of me other than sign a form saying “I am homeschooling”. I was appalled.

Another way of saying it is, "Conservatives did all that." At the time, the Democratic Party was the conservative party in America, and the Republicans were the progressives. But try explaining that to a group of conservatives today, and they repeatedly become confused and mix up the parties. I've watched it play out in a thread. ETA: screw Baked Alaska, he broke into Pelosi's office and used her phone after testing positive for COVID.

Way too many people like this out there. My in-laws come to mind. They live in a small mid-west town where there was a street called noose lane, named as such because many years ago 3 African American guys were hung on that very street.. A few years ago there was a petition to rename the street. My FIL was outraged as it is deleting the history of his beloved town. For context, this man has two mixed grandchildren and so far 3 mixed great grandchildren. Same guy giving me a tour of the town was telling me how everything was all once mom and pop owned businesses until the Mexicans came. His wife of over 50 years is full blooded Mexican. I'm pointing my big wtf finger at you Glen!!

The op is not married to an illegal immigrant. Op's wife is following the process. OP is simply pointing ojt thst sometimes people following the process are treated worse than people who circumvent the process. I believe people should be given a legitimate path to citizenship, but still have to go through the process. I am not against immigration, and believe usa could do better. I dont like what happening at the border because i view it as a humanitarian crisis.

Not commenting on the stupidity of the post, but I worked in US immigration until a few months ago and I assure you, there are A LOT of scenarios where the situation with OPs wife can come up. When I left, work visas for spouses of US citizens were taking up to 14 months to process; travel documents were around 12. The whole process is pretty obtuse and the timelines are not always well known, so it's entirely possible that her original work/travel documents expired and she's waiting for new ones. In the meantime, she's pretty much stuck.

He is an idiot but if his wife has a green card then she is by definition a legal immigrant. It sounds like she just needs to get a passport from her home country. I am in his situation as my wife has a green card but not citizenship.. A couple of years ago her passport expired because frankly we forgot about it. It was a collosal mess to get worked out. But has no bearing on refugees arriving at the border.

They and Them have been singular pronouns since the 13th century. So over 700 years. Longer than "you" has been a singular pronoun. This is not language evolving or shifting meanings.

Know what? Let language live, breathe, take in new words, shifts of meanings and let it throw out old words, if there's a sound reason to. Just let happen what happens, as language reflects thoughts and concepts, it will, one way or another, do so anyway...

This is kinda unrelated, but this was actually a thing kinda going on in France lol! Il and elle/illes and elles are gendered pronouns (which basically every language has obviously), but no real way to say “they” in a neutral way. Even when talking in plural, vous means you, nous means we, illes/elles means strictly groups. Even then, illes means boys and girl and elles is just girls. So somewhat recently (like a year ago kinda? Don’t entirely know), someone made a neopronoun ‘iel/iels’. The entire purpose was to be a gender neutral alternative to il and elle/illes and elles! Just a neat little thing to know! :)

It's all about context. I recently read a news story involving two individuals, one of whom used they/them, and it was really difficult to follow. I needed to keep circling back to figure out if "they" was both people or just the they/them one. I have no problem with preferred pronouns - whatever floats your boat - but in certain contextual scenarios it's confusing.

This is so dumb because they them their had ALWAYS been used when you didn't know the gender of the person or didn't want to draw attention to it, for whatever reason. It's perfectly fine and has been used as a literary device for as long as there has been written or spoken word. We know you're being facetious for effect, but you just look like a moron.

My kid has an unusual name and it's sometimes hard for people to tell if it's a boy or girl name. At least half the time they get it wrong and use the wrong gender pronoun. But the other day the optometrist used "they/them/their" when I was picking up a prescription. First time I can remember that happening. I thought it was great... Respectful way to refer to the kid without misgendering them regardless of whether they are cis or not.

Ironically the only demand for "respect" I've ever seen from the LGBTQ+ community at large is respect for everyone's right to decide for themselves who they are (including not persecuting them for being different), only intervening when they become a threat to the actual safety of others. The point wasn't what type of loan it is, it's that his claim that people who's loans are forgiven "have no idea what sacrifice means" and thus should have to pay it all back is hypocritical when he himself has his own loan forgiven without having to pay it back.

Wealthy men in suits exploited numerous groups to build America and carry on the industrial revolution. Enslaved persons labored to build the wealth of plantations. Chinese immigrants were abused as they built the transcontinental railroad. Immigrants from Ireland, Italy and other "undesirable" European countries kept factories running while working in dangerous conditions.

There is a *massive* difference between these two situations: 1/ trained soldiers, instructed and supervised by disciplined experts. (As far as I know, many/most soldiers in training are held responsible for every aspect of what they do with their weapon, and can’t just carry it and unlimited amounts of ammunition around when they feel like it.) 2/ Any teenage k**b walking into a gun shop, with no training or supervision, but with mental health issues and boulders on their shoulders. Huuuuge difference!

One is a profession, which (hopefully) some decent, thorough training, including information about when and why to kill. If nations choose to force their kids to actively participate in a war zone, you do you. Many nations with a professional army don't, and volunteer or duty kids are not by law. The other is buying a weapon on a whim, without any instructions. You do you.

It seems like we've created a narrative in recent years where being "for" something means I am automatically against the opposite. It's a cognitive shortcut. This has been perfected in the US with its two party system where one side is consistently painting the other as the villain to creat division, but I see it happening elsewhere, too. Of course there are instances where it's clear cut, but very often, not. I can be for abortion in some circumstances, but against it in others. People may vote locally from age 16 and nationwide from age 18. And so on.

No. The unregulated wild west style student loan system is. Financial institutions can forgive debt and lose nothing by writing it off on their taxes. This ridiculous suggestion that students getting their loans forgiven has to be paid for by hard working people is a lie by the GOP who probably invested in those unregulated loan companies. Cancel these predatory debts. The unregulated companies will go out of business. No one has to pay the loans back. A fiscal budget is not a pie.

Yes and no. I think he's right that it is a loaded word. But at the same time so is "rioter, looter or arsonist". So fair's fair, they can't be referred to as "victims" but they also can't be referred to as "looters" they should simply be referred to as "people".

This is how the modern Republican party works. If they were to campaign honestly based solely on their true policies and agenda, they'd almost never get votes, because their policies are hugely unpopular. They rely on the least educated for votes, cut funding to education to ensure this, and use tactics of "othering" to rouse anger, fear and support.

Meanwhile in that RARE case in Nashville where cops actually did their job instead of cowering, went in and took down a shooter, all the rightwingnuts wasted bandwidth criticizing how they did it, because wasn't "textbook military precision". In other words, the rightwingnuts wanted the cops to stay outside and let kids die.

The left picture is a "thin blue line" stylized American flag. It's a sentiment that police are a narrow group of people that are preventing all of societal collapse into a lawless hellscape. Ergo, they refuse to accept that racial bias or police brutality are realities, and thus blindly support cops no matter what. Thare sre also versions that have a green stripe to represent the military or a red one for firefighters, or all three. Color and placement of the swapped stripes varies with specific designs. Ironically, all of these would violate the US flag code. (Rules for appropriate use, display, and handling of our flag, for the non-Americans here. Enforcement is loose and vague, as it does conflict with the 1st amendment. 99% of the application of it is how a flag is folded that was used in the funeral of a veteran.)
