At the time of writing, the ‘Basic Physics’ group has a jaw-dropping 2.1 million members. The community has grown by leaps and bounds since it was founded in early October of 2018. The members are very active and in the last month alone, they’ve made 286 new posts.

Meanwhile, the team running ‘Basic Physics’ is fairly large. It’s made up of 7 administrators, as well as 9 moderators. It makes sense to have so many people from all over the world on the team, considering the massive size of the group itself.

Not exactly correct: As various mutations spread, the one that spreads the best is the one that limits the host's socialization the least. Making you die is the least successful. Immediately laying you up is still pretty bad. Letting you spread the microbe for a few days and then making you stay home sick works pretty well, but is problematic because it has to avoid triggering the immune system. The most successful virus spreads without ever making people sick.

I saw online that most of the authors of these books get very little money for these books as they are artificially overpriced and would rather send you a book or email you a copy for either free or at a much more reasonable price rather than feed an already over stuffed pocket

Most of academia is institutions charging a literal fortune for people who are paid relatively little for creating the product. Scientific journals are even worse, they don't pay the authors, rarely pay the people peer reviewing the papers, and charge out the nose for the information they had practically nothing to do with.

There was an author in my country, Sofocleto, who wrote mostly comical political books. He realized his books were expensive so changed editorial tona cheaper one and lowered the paper quality, to the point even piracy couldn't match his prices. Note that he recieved the same ammount of money from the good and low quality books. Also, I still have those books, mint condition 25 years after.

I've always wondered...what is the depth of "the flat earth" ,I believe the Russians (during the cold war) were in competition with the US to drill the deepest hole (look it up, probably the most petty thing two superpowers have ever done)...the Russians got to I think 18miles .. anyway back to my point, how far goes someone drill through until the drill "pops" out the other side and into space? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 flat earthers never seem to go into "depth" about it 😁😁

These goats are badass. They do not give a flying shiny one about Newton and his laws of gravity. They care only about showing rock climbers what a bunch of sissies they are with their 125kgs of climbing gear. They laugh as they run past them on their way up the mountain. They lie on the top smoking a joint while they wait for them to catch up then they wander back down again.

They did that here with two old-school telephone books. Woven it together by folding the pages into each other, like two decks of cards. Attached rings and chains in the backs and the pulling began. Humans could not do it. Towtrucks could not do it either - the chains broke in the end.

Geckos toes have thousands of tiny hair like things on them which is what allows them to cling to surfaces, to maximise surface contact and they also grip into the tiny cracks etc that can even be present on glass surfaces. No molecular bonding occurs.

Downvote. Except for the shape of the ears and probably it's mouth, the scientific reconstruction of a bunny would very much look like a bunny. I saw that meme in a few variations and it makes me angry, because it's not the 1930s anymore! Modern reconstructions are based on the knowledge of modern animals and are very accurate. Sadly a lot of older or purely artistic reconstructions still make it into textbooks and trick people into thinking Paleontologists don't know what they are doing

Hypothesis to theory, yes, but a law isn't above a theory. A law just describes one specific mechanic, whereas a theory is an overarching rationale for why those laws work. So Newton's law of gravity works (to the extent that it does) because it reflects a mechanism that is explained by the general theory of relativity. Outside of pure mathematics, a theory is the best-supported of scientific thinking.

We had corn stalks growing from the middle of the tracks near us. There was a slow leak from the rail cars. As they grew, other trains would mow them down. They grew again but eventually, they died off.

I really didn't understand the importance or fungi until I watched one of the new Magic Schoolbus episodes on Netflix and then they went into depth about how fungi connects the forest and helps the trees communicate whether theirs a browser coming in and eating the leaves so they begin to produce more tannin or if they need more nutrients. It was a fascinating episode.

So just pondering here. Since ∞ is uncountable, does that not mean that ∞+∞=∞+1, as there is no way to count beyond infinity anyway? And by elimination, would that not mean ∞=1? Also probably I need sleep.

On top of that, making your memes ‘evergreen’ can give them a longer shelf life than if they were entirely based on recent news. General memes about science or what it’s like to be a researcher can remain relevant for years and potentially even decades to come than posts that require a lot of additional context to get.

To neutralize 0.8 mL of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) at STP, you'd need about 0.8 moles of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) based on the balanced chemical equation: H2SO4 + 2NaHCO3 → Na2SO4 + 2H2O + 2CO2 Each mole of H2SO4 requires 2 moles of NaHCO3. So, 0.8 mL of H2SO4 is approximately equivalent to 0.8 moles when considering the negligible volume at STP.

Probably not wrong, but the better way is to cut the body in half and put one half in sulfuric acid and the other in lye. When the halves are suitably dissolved you mix the lye and the acid and they make saltwater. Then you add a bunch of onions, carrots and celery, and serve in a bowl, over noodles.

Well... huh. I'm going to need a chemistry lesson. What is a mole and how does it differ from a molecule? Does this need to be exact? Are we measuring using pH scale? What is STP? Please define. If we're using pH that would imply the sodium bicarbonate is alkaline, yes? I never took chemistry so I would probably need instructions and/or assistance to do the experiment/ math required. If course now in curious. How many moles?

Your-ruh-ness, more or less, for me. I did a Google cuz why not, that pronunciation is the official one and likely closer to that of the Roman God, but your-ay-ness was the official pronunciation of the planet up until 1950 or so. The moon Charon is similar, it has a different pronunciation based on if you are referring to the mythic character or moon

My parents are first cousins. My father paid a priest (after they tried several places). My two late grandmothers were sisters. One of my father's sisters married her 3rd cousin. Later on, one of my brothers went out with one of my aunt's daughters (2nd cousins). I'm pretty sure it's only the Roman Catholics who have a problem with this. Let me know if I'm wrong.

When I was studying medical terminology, a nice nurse that saw me studying asked how I found it, I told her I was really enjoying finding out how incredible the body is at keeping us going despite all the seemingly infinite things that can eff you up. She introduced me to prion diseases. Utterly terrifying, utterly fascinating. Fatal Familial Insomnia, talk about a terrible genetic lottery outcome! I'm right at the age bracket it usually starts showing at and I and many other family members have trouble sleeping anyway so that one really hits all the "new fear unlocked" checkboxes! And then there's kuru, and the very localized variant bestowing at least partial immunity - and the chance that a cure for Alzheimer's could find its roots in cannibalism! Like I said, scary af, interesting af.

Some fascinating "history" about Kuru - a prion-associated neurodegenerative disease that first appeared in Papua-New Guinea in the late 1700's. The locals were cannibals, who ceremoniallyl ate their dead relatives' brains. There was some discussion on how this got started, and the best theory was that they ate a missiionary who was infected with Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (closely related). Presumably, they boiled him up in a pot. But he was a friar.

In the movie Oppenheimer (and in the book) they distinguish between the physicists who came up with the theories and the physicists who came up with the math to put them in practice.

When I was giving a multiple choice test once I put "#19 c" on the board. Suspecting a trap, no one chose "c", which was in fact the correct answer. Lots of people followed the procedure to get the answer at "c", then talked themselves out of it.

No way would that cat have cut that apple stem with it’s claws to make that apple fall on his head. It would have just jumped on his head and buried it’s claws into his scalp to avoid hitting the ground.

Bonding makes a lot more sense when you study it as wave interference between two electron orbitals as standing waves. The electron particle is just the center point of the resulting amplitude from the constructive interference. That probably sound like a mouthful, but it makes a lot of sense with some simple drawings of wave interference, and demonstrates why the particle is most often found at the location directly between the two nuclei. The Neils-Bohr model of billiard balls really needs to go. It's just confusing people at this point.

I like the idea of putting the periodic table on the building but I can't see why one would identify an element by it's electron shells? And why would one even bother with the deeper shells--if anything in a deeper shell is ripped off you're at an energy state that makes chemistry not very relevant.

her legs are about 1 foot (12 inches/30 cm) ahead of the furniture, that makes the lower body length as sqrt(73^2 + 30^2) = 78.9 cm. the fact that we place the phone roughly 20 cms in front of our face, the upper body length comes to (3/2)*4*14.6 cm = 87.6. reducing 2 inches of heels, total height comes to 161.5 cm.

Even though I love the way you did the maths here you are definitely not looking at a woman who is just over 5’4”. The left leg which is straight is only around 4” in front of the cabinet. You need to take off 3 inches for the wedge heels. The phone is way less than 20cm from her face. She is under 5’ tall.

If you consider the angle of the elbow of the arm she is holding the phone with which makes it only slightly larger than the original person calculated, add in the leaning position and the average height of a cupboard and completely ignore the fact that she’s wearing her dad’s trousers she is around 4ft 10.5”.

If only. At least the way it used to work, the first author is usually the most senior. Pretty much just oversees everyone else.

One author really does all the work. Whether they get credit is up to the faculty. An annoying trend these days is to make the list of authors longer than than the substance of the article, and list authors in alphabetical order. It's still the case that only one of those authors has done the actual work. I'm thinking of changing my name to Ann Aardvark.

    No. Try it algebraically. a÷b(c+d)=a÷(bc+bd); a=6, b=2, c=1, d=2; 6÷(2+4)=1.

Ok guys. It’s the brackets first so 1+2=3, so the equation is now 6 divided by 2, than since there isn’t anything between the 2 and the brackets it turns in a multiplication, so it’s 6➗2 x 3. Then you go left to right so 3 x 3 =9. Using pedmas the answer is 9.

The real funny thing is that the meme is precisely mocking people rushing to give their answer and then arguing about the result, even though it has no interest at all. And what are people doing in the comments? Rushing to give their answer, arguing about the result and downvoting anyone who thinks differently. LoL. Do you really not get that this is an AMBIGUOUS equation? Both answers are right and wrong, none is better than the other. You’re making a fool of yourselves.

Professional mathematician here. Using the wrong method to simplify an expression does not make the expression ambiguous. Using the right method incorrectly doesn't either. It is not a matter of thinking differently. A mathematical expression like this can have only one correct value because there is only one correct way of computing it. There are established rules for applying division, multiplication, addition, and grouping symbols and the order in which they should be applied. If you depart from correct procedure, you get an incorrect answer, not an ambiguity. By the way, even if you were correct, your last sentence is inappropriate

Doesn't this only work if fail= no fail. The assumption that it does is the only reason this works. And you can't assume that bc as people we put more value in no fail which makes it not equal to fail

Not so wild as it seems. Basically he just divided both sides by 1x2x3x4x5x6x7x8x9x10x11, or found that 12! = 11! x 12, slightly obscuring what he did by representing using 3x4 instead of 12.

I normally use capital V for volume or Volts, and since you never use them in the same equation it's unambiguous.

    David A Paterson

There's a better version of this. V also means potential energy. And you can use velocity, volume and potential energy all in the same equation.

    David A Paterson
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Equating potential energy to kinetic energy. V = rho * V * v^2. Potential energy is density times volume times the square of the velocity.
