Art is a powerful form of expression, not just of beauty and aesthetic quality, but of ideas and protest as well. Cuban artist Angel Boligán is a master of this, delivering incredibly insightful critiques on the ills of the modern world within the confines of a single, beautifully drawn cartoon.
Boligán, who now lives in Mexico City after being invited to work at El Universal, one of the country's major newspapers, has received countless international awards and worldwide recognition for the way he highlights the rampant consumerism, loneliness, addiction and over-reliance on technology in Western society. "I am a social caricaturist, a graphic chronicler of the era in which we live," he told Bored Panda. "My drawings are usually conceptual, I like to provoke a smile accompanied by some reflection."
In his 38 years of working as a cartoonist Boligán's work has changed graphically, but he sees issues that have been recurrent in his work and are still very much relevant today. "Satire is a whip against these extreme leaders of our days," he explains. "It is a pity that humans do not learn from our history and our mistakes and we are again invaded by extremism, selfishness, blindness and mediocrity."
"The caricature does not kill anyone but it can stir the conscience. Intelligent, committed and honest humor connects with people, and I believe that we are each a very valuable grain of sand in the construction of a better world."
Boligán is inspired by life and society, and is a "hunter of ideas, emotions and the absurdities that are happening between us." He takes slices of humor, graphics, metaphors and a little poetry, and serves them up in ink with a touch of watercolor. And while he is happy in Mexico, Cuba is most definitely in his heart. "Of Cuba it is true, I left," he told us. "But I never abandoned!"

I see soccer matches all the time in the field, kids are always riding their bikes, skateboarding, at the playground. What I don't see as often are kids jump roping, hopscotch, jacks, marbles, tea parties, walking dolls in little toy strollers, and just playing catch with friends or off a wall.

I revisited my childhood playground this summer. A field, a stream and a waterfall where in my youth there were dozens of kids playing every hot afternoon. Not one child to be seen at the height of the school holidays - all at home playing online.

Ain't it the truth? This is why I have always have my own businesses, no matter how many employee I have, as being "the boss" I was AWAYS treated with respect. Imagine my shock and horror, when at 40 years old with 20 years of very successful experience behind me, I was treated just like the woman in the cartoon. I could not believe it! So back to my own business, for sure. No "security. profit sharing" or anything else got treated like a convict, a slave, a piece of a*s or a robot to be pushed around. All those middlen-managers liked to throw their weight around, acting like pimps, really, and upper mgt. could care less as long as the managers kept the employees in line. So happy to say I've done well in my professional no matter how hard it was to get started (took a year of practically no income, and then the water tap started to flow open. I have NEVER LOOKED BACK! Good luck to everyone: throw off your chains: do what you LOVE! It will NEVER be "work," you will do what you LOVE.

If I were the artist, I might title this "Hollywood, Then and Now". With that said, it's pretty applicable to all job interviews, since for women specifically, perception of physicality and appearance tends to hold as much, if not more, value than do experience and qualifications.

@THE ULTIMATE PUGTATO >_< My parents divorced when I was only 5, too young to understand and too old to forget. Obviously it hurt, and still does, and I cried many tears, but I will always say I am happy they got divorced. By saying they should have stayed together to spare your feeling is cruel and selfish. If you care more about your own happiness then the happiness of people who love and do everything for you, then you need to rethink your values.

I must agree with you. My parents didn't understand each other and they almost got divorced. But, before my mother could find a way to escape her abusive husband, he had serious accident at work, almost died and she decided to stay with him. But I would be much happier if she would leave him once he would recover. He was terrible bully, they used to fight almost every day, also he was drinking and hitting her then. I moved out as soon as I could and I know they got quite better (she start drinking with him) but my childhood is forever ruined. Also I'm scared if someone is screaming and don't like to be around drunk people (although I know how to talk with hem) :(

I never saw my parents happy together. During the first years of my life they stayed together while profoundly resenting each other. It was dreadful and the most toxic environment I ever knew. When they finally got divorced I was around 8 y.o and the announcement made me feel like it was Christmas. I am still traumatized by all this and will be forever. Never stay together just for your children. They are sensitive and not as dumb as you think. They can understand and feel things. Don't wreck their emotional construction. Which of course also means once you divorce don't talk s**t about the other parent in front of your kids just because you don't get along anymore.

Abortion should be legal everywhere and it shouldn't be a thing of shame. The world population is growing really fast and if it keeps growing at the rate at which it's growing now, very soon it'll become a problem and the same governments that tell women not to abort will be the ones to find a way to kill a huge fraction of the population when the time comes. Of course they won't gun down people. They'll just give us cancer or whatever new diseases they come up with. Wake up people! Stop having so many kids! The world doesn't need a lot of kids at this point. At most you should only be having two kids to replace you and your partner. Stop increasing the population.

I sometimes think vigilante justice should be done more. I don't like the thought of that, but the "justice system" isn't fair. If you're rich you get better deals or a slap on the wrist. If you're poor you suffer. This goes over to race and religion too. There's too much discrimination in court. If lady justice is truly blind a person's social status should bare no mark on determining their guilt.

These are double standards. If there were a couple reading books on this picture, people would be all like: "owww" and "how sweet" and "so cute". I don't understand why we have so big problem with smartphones and its users. Also, it is not really necessary to spend ALL the time with each another to build a healthy relationship.

It is pity that people in the west are just not educated on this subject. I don't see why is it wrong. Ok, we DO search informations in internet rather than in books, but - internet is less expensive and gives more data. It's not like people are reading less, they just use another sources. Also, people still love books, they just buy belles-lettres and fiction rather than textbooks and encyclopedies, that's all.

And in the case where you choose not to keep living, you'd be given a quick and painless death with no suffering and memories of you would be wiped completely from the minds of everyone you ever met so you wouldn't still exist in their minds. Another one that is rather annoying. I'm not saying that havig too many plastic surgery is a good thing. But if it is one or two and if it improves someone's self-confidence? Why not. Some people hate their bodies - they do not do surgery to please others just to please themselves. After surgery, sometimes they are happier, they have better life. Interference with your own body is not a bad thing, it's just one of the choices you can make. :(

It is a self fulfilling prophecy though. The fact that cosmetic surgery exists gives rise to dissatisfaction. Knowing you could, with money, change things. If the option wasn't there we would also see less 'perfect' bodies shoved under our noses.

To me the pictures are very insightful, in contrast to some I find on Panda. They’re smart, multilayered and of diverse aspects of life. I love how intentionally discrete and subtle they are, and how the shapes used also tell a story themselves and play with the mood of the drawings. I really enjoyed them.
