I used to love Murikami (Windup Bird, Kafka, Hard-Boiled Wonderland were some faves). But the female protagonist in IQ84 is distractingly two-dimensional often described with typical male fantasy notions like 'the type of girl who is beautiful but didn't know it.' Psshhhh, please! It was so bad that when I tried to go back an reread the books of his I liked, it was like the veil had dropped and I could see echoes of the same problematic writing in earlier work.
