The difference between a wholesomely supportive and genuinely toxic job environment is the people you work with. Your coworkers, managers, and bosses from all the way up the corporate ladder have the power to either inspire you to aim for new heights or to regret every moment you spend with them.

A major thing that gets employees’ blood boiling is seeing passive-aggressive signs put up all over the office, full of worker-unfriendly regulations, practically dripping with managerial arrogance and disdain for ‘regular’ workers. (A close second, if you’re curious, is people who microwave fish at work. Don’t do that.)

Our team here at Bored Panda dove deep into the r/antiwork archives to collect the very worst office and work signs that people have ever spotted. Including some really weird looking-for-work ads. Seriously, these are all an affront to dignity and perfectly illustrate what some higher-ups think of the people they pay.

Like, who reminds you that your dog is missing you because you can't work remotely and have to go into the office?! That's just inhumane (incanine?).

I feel like the USA is especially hard on teachers. They get paid starvation wages to do one of the hardest jobs in the world.

Ours is the only job that you pay to learn to do it, you have an unpaid internship to determine if you are fit, while still paying for the "course", then you find a job and none of them pay enough to pay off loans, you must renew your license every few years, and you are observed to see if you are fit almost continuously. And people wonder why teachers are in short supply.

And they wonder why there's a severe shortage of teachers in the US. But do they raise teachers' wages? Oh, hell no; they lower the standards to be a teacher and pay less to those who sign up to teach without the appropriate education. Why worry about our kids education? That only affects the future of our nation and our world, not to mention the wellbeing of our youth, no biggie. (Sarcasm, in case someone didn't recognize it.) I'm referring to changes in requirements to teach in Florida and also the changes being pushed by Virginia's governor. I have a world of respect for our former military, but being able to teach is a skill - there's a legitimate reason why there are teaching degrees. Being a veteran does not automatically create in a person the ability to teach effectively.

$10/hr for a babysitter? That seems super low. This is just from a random Google search, but it looks like babysitters (In America) are paid anywhere from $13-18.40/hr, which would be a salary of $425,880-602,784. Source: https://www.parents.com/parenting/money/hourly-babysitting-rate-states/

$10 per child for a full time babysitter is low? For 1 child that probably is low, but multiple children doesn't equal the same per child rate. Also full time babysitter is less due to more and regular hours plus there is more time dedicated to each child. The comparison should be more in line with daycare. Average cost for a full-time nanny is $695 per week for one child or $715 for two. Daycare is $225 per week for one or $430 for 2 or $215 per child. The rate per child is lower for each additional child. Using the two child daycare rate, $215 x 28 =$6020 per week for 36 weeks is $217k. Realistically $100 per child per week should be the "bulk" rate, so $2800 x 36 weeks is about $101k average over the entire US. Average US teacher pay is $65k, so using the daycare analogy teachers should get about a 55% pay increase. Average pay by state is $49k to $85k.

i work for my brother’s girlfriends mom. she works at a fall festival thing, where she does face painting. she used to be a high school art teacher. she told me the other day that she gets paid more in her one month at the festival painting faces than a full year teaching. wtf.

Yes teachers need to be paid more and parents need to be more accountable for childrens behavior. Teachers are not social workers, probation officers, security guards or police officers. It your child displays antisocial behavior they need to be sent home.

Lol $2 billion sounds like a lot of money to an individual. But when it's spread to all the teachers and schools, it's almost nothing. From what I could find, there are a little over 130,000 school systems. $2B spread out evenly between each school system is about $15,400 per system. And I've seen between 3 and 4 million teachers. So let's say, 3 million. If you ignored the school systems and gave all the teachers a cut of $2B, that would be about $667 per teacher. Even if it was tax free, it wouldn't exactly be life changing money. Also, that $7B didn't seem right, so I looked it up. It's actually $742.3 billion. To make any real changes to the schools and teachers, you'd probably be looking more in the range of $200B rather just "a few billion".

I agree teachers need to be paid a good wage. Using the numbers on the sign, teachers work 180 school days at 6.5 hours per day or 1170 hours per year. I disagree with those numbers. Teachers work before and after the school year ends and put in hours after the school day end. To be fair let's use 200 days at 8 hours per day, so 1600 hours per year. I'm not sure what teachers make everywhere in the U.S. but here in poor rural Louisiana, they start around $45k and upto at least $75k. That's $28-$47 per hour. Generally other professions work 40 per week 48 weeks per year (allowing for vacation and holidays) 1920 hours per year. So $53k-$90k, which is very good pay in my area for college graduates. I'm sure teacher salaries are higher in other areas. IMHO teachers in my area should be paid higher salaries, probably in the $55k-$90k, putting them in line with other college graduates but allowing teachers more time off to recuperate from the stress of dealing with kids every day.

My dad used to be a teacher, and even he said that if he qualified these days, he wouldn't want to do the job any more. He did supply teaching once he retired, but he said that full time teachers get treated like rubbish. It's sad, because we NEED teachers, and they deserve to be treated with respect and get fair pay.

Part of this is a good idea. Daycare gets more per child than teachers do. Federal and state governments need to be confronted about the disparity.

I'm sure I'll be downvoted into oblivion for saying this, but as a former teacher's aide, I am perplexed as to why so many people think that teachers are so grossly underpaid. I worked with a first-year teacher who bragged about making more than $4,000 per month. That is hardly chump change. If we're going to talk about underpaid educators, let's start with the paraprofessionals who are paid starvation wages. As a para, I brought home less than $1,300 per month, and I had to do much of the heavy lifting and dirty work that the teacher thought was beneath her.

Public school teachers in many places in America like many other government employees do not pay into Social Security. Instead their money goes into a different kind of pension plan that invests their money resulting in a yield far above what they put in, the opposite of SS. They can also add to this with a tax deferred investment called a 403(b), which basically a 401(k) for government employees. I was involved in this industry. As a result if they stay teaching from college to retirement they can often retire earlier than most Americans and while you’re staring at you pitiful SS check wondering what you’ll do they can potentially retire in their 40s and be millionaires. This picture is probably a union protester counting on your ignorance. As for the babysitter comparison parents are obligated to see their children are educated and do not directly decide a teacher’s pay. A babysitter is an elective choice and has value to the parent, thus the pay.

In most areas of the country this is 100% accurate... for Long Island however, my daughters first grade teacher was making 260,000 dollars a year. 50K more than the principal. This was also in 2007. They also all retire with hefty pensions and lifetime medical/dental coverage. Long Island is crazy.

Workplace expert Lynn shared the steps that you can take as an employee in these situations with Bored Panda:

  • "First, make sure you’re seeing a pattern before taking action. Typically, the real offenders have bad office habits that are hard to break. The techniques worked in the past, so they continue, and you’ll see more than one instance. If the signage becomes repeated and overbearing, it’s not your imagination.
  • Depending on the relationship you have with your boss, and if the behavior is more episodic, you may be able to approach them, using reason. For example, you might suggest an internal memo that addresses the issue and explains the importance of doing X, with a team-oriented approach. It might read something like, 'I know we’re all working hard to meet our 4th Quarter project deadlines; thank you for the extra effort,' versus signage that, in effect, says, 'Get here on time, or else!'
  • If the one-on-one approach won’t work or fails, there’s always power in numbers. Discreetly speak to your fellow beleaguered office mates, and see if the demoralizing signage is making everyone want to crawl under their desks in exasperation. If so, your group can propose a civil productive discussion, starting with the manager. If that doesn’t work, there’s the boss’s boss, and after that, Human Resources.
  • Remember the end goal; to change the dialogue and make it more positive. Remind your boss of the end goal, too. Subtly let it be known that the oppressive approach may backfire, the stakes, and what will have the best outcome. If the notes are redundant, petty, or nonsensical, use your best emotional intelligence and be the voice of reason.
  • Don’t fight fire with fire. If you’re the lucky recipient of an insulting email or note, don’t play the game. If you witness a passive-aggressive piece of communication, don’t try and think of a super clever retort. Just ask for clarification, e.g., 'Just so I understand, are you saying you want a more detailed report?' You want this to be a win-win (and keep your job, if it’s worth keeping!).
  • If the language in company signs and communications is intimidating as opposed to merely disheartening, and the situation is untenable, it is likely time to visit your favorite job board."

Give your staff the benefit of the doubt; be encouraging; use emotional intelligence; and treat your staff like the adults they are. I don't think that that sign was written by a rude boss. I think it was a note that his employees left to the customers to help them understand why the shop was closed, and that it also served as a passive agressive message to a delutional manager, who had little clue on how vulnarable his business was and therefore how much he should do to satisfy his employees basic needs.

There’s a delicate balance that needs to be maintained at work. On one side of the scale, you’ve got things like company morale, how inspired, creative, and motivated your employees feel, how much they trust their bosses, and how satisfied they are with their jobs and the opportunities that they’re offered. You want to know that your hard work pays off... though sometimes it totally doesn't.

On the other side of the scale are things like company profits, maintaining protocols and regulations, having a general sense of order and discipline, and keeping potentially reckless or unmotivated workers’ actions in line with the overall interests of each department.

In short, there’s no excuse for being toxic or rude as a boss; however, it doesn’t mean that every single employee is somehow above criticism. It’s human to err. And last we checked, our AI Overlords haven’t replaced any of the staff with androids (...yet).

There’s usually a deeper story behind each passive-aggressive office sign. Perhaps a manager feels underappreciated or believes that their workers are slacking off. Maybe they have a very different work ethic that’s completely at odds with the values held by younger generations. Or they had a really bad day and lashed out in an emotionally immature way.

Remember, just because someone has a fancy job title doesn't mean that they're actually a better person and more capable leader than you. You can be a leader no matter where in the corporate chain you fall.

That’s what happens when you have extremely poor communication within an organization. Managers and ‘regular’ employees need to know each others’ expectations and to enforce healthy boundaries. It all comes down to showing respect for everyone’s time, energy, and dignity, as well as looking for compromises. If either side is brow-beating the other, odds are that it’s a toxic place to work and not many people will stick around for long.

Look, at the end of the day, we’re all responsible for our own happiness, work/life balance, priorities, and what kind of behavior we’re willing to tolerate. Now, that’s no excuse for others acting like jerks and bullying you day-in, day-out. However, it does mean that we have to be proactive in sorting out the problems that drag us down at work.

That might mean different things for different people. Does your coworker keep microwaving fish and stinking up your office 24/7? Sit them down for a quick friendly chat and ask them to stop instead of putting up passive-aggressive sticky notes all over the kitchen.

Does your boss give you more and more work because you finish your tasks quicker than others? Have a discussion about a possible promotion because of your excellent results. Explain to them that there should be incentives in place to work faster instead of hard work being punished. Remind them how much you bring to the company at least a couple of times a year.

Is your boss 'quiet firing' you by subtly letting you know that you have absolutely no future career path at the company? You need to diplomatically confront them about being sidelined, hopefully, with HR acting as a witness. Odds are that your boss is extremely frightened of any and all confrontation and is taking the easiest way out by forcing you to leave on your own.

Are they making you sing and dance in mandatory corporate TikToks? You might want to get HR or some other more-or-less-neutral party involved and set clear boundaries. If they keep harassing you to work unpaid overtime or guilt-tripping you to work on your days off, it’s time to have a very diplomatic-yet-honest chat about what the company is willing to offer you moving forward.

I kind of agree with stamping out the "it's not my patient" mentality and b!tching about co-workers, esp in a hierarchical work place... But you do that with training and building a caring work environment, which this directly goes against. So failed at step one.

About 20°C is what's generally deemed "room temperature", and 18°C is the lowest one can reasonably go inside a building where people are working/studying- even that's not comfortable for most people. Below that, you risk respiratory disease or even hypothermia if exposure is prolonged, and you aren't doing vigorous physical exercise.
