People Are Ridiculing Melania Trump’s White House Rose Garden Renovation With Savage Tweets
Ever since 1961, when President Kennedy came up with the idea to design the Rose Garden at the west end of the White House, the garden has become an icon by itself.
Designed by the gardener Rachel Lambert Mellon, it has been home to a colorful selection of magnolias, cherry trees, roses, tulips, and other botanical beauties. Both harmonious and subtle, it has framed the view toward the Cabinet Room and the Oval Office and reflected every changing pattern of American history.
But on Saturday, the First Lady unveiled her Rose Garden remake that was meant to bring the space to its original roots. But the redesign received strong backlash on social media with people being far from impressed with the results. The internet dubbed Melania’s makeover “#RoseGardenMassacre,” comparing the result to a lifeless "parking lot." The hashtag is now trending and people have a lot to say about it.
After you're done reading this one, check out our new article on the gardener who stepped in to defend Melania's redesign.

The TDS is massive here. 1. The area was NOT handicapped accessible. It was redesigned so now Everybody can experience it (guess that’s only important if a liberal did it). 2. The trees were moved. Jackie never intended them that large and they obstruct the view. 3. It’s another Jackie design, so many of you are accusing Jackie, not Melania. 4. Nobody seems to care that some flowers are now out of season. (Timing of pictures. They rather be manipulated by the media into anger) Sad.
Load More Replies...Actually, if you read what they did, they MOVED the trees to a location that they could grow to full maturity without killing off all of the other plants underneath (roses especially) who were never meant to be in shade. Jackie planted them and they were fine for a few decades but are now too large and were in a position that they would damage themselves (not enough space) and everything around it. She simply corrected a bad situation. They aren't chopped down either - they were moved.
Thank you Mary Padgett for correcting the knuckle heads who judge without knowing the facts!
Load More Replies...I can only hope the bulbs and trees etc were DUG UP as I would imagine any gardener would do. Perhaps moved to another location.
Trees may be moved someplace where a little shade would be appreciated. We won't know about the bulbs until Spring. There may be a lovely display.
Load More Replies...Why would you cut down Cherry trees that were planted by one of the most famous persons in your history????
It's a new garden, and it takes time for it to reach its full potential. The crab apple trees (not cherry trees) were shading the roses and other plants and inhibiting their growth. The tulips and muscari shown in the photo on the left don't bloom in August, only in the Spring. Gardens, all gardens, need rejuvenating periodically.
Where is your evidence they were shading and inhibiting growth? Many flowering plants require the type of dappled light provided by ornamental trees, including flowering bulbs. Boring boxwoods replace a significant portion of the flowers, and the remaining flowers are white and off-white.
Load More Replies...It is only as tragic as the person viewing it sees it! It’s all in the eye of the tragic beholder...
Load More Replies...Not that it matters to you, they WERE MOVED, not cut down.
Load More Replies...Such a sad state, it is sinful, to cut down any trees, but beautiful trees, should be left alone, and I agree, you are leaving soon, but you had to, leave your mess behind, I sincerely hope, the rose garden is restored, I could care less, what a gardener has to say, if he is your gardener, he likely got a bonus !!!
(because it was so hard for me to read for some reason) it says the "white house reveals some newly decorated space that seems to capture melania's joyless screaming on the inside" aesthetic
When our Universal Designer, God, puts plants here and there, nobody says anything pro or con. When a human, like Melania does the design, everybody seems to shout, wrong this, wrong that. Give time for the newly planted landscaping to grow up, and everybody will see the result. Shall we still hear "wrong this, wrong that?" A baby grows up and everybody says, "wow, what a beautiful lovable baby you are." Just let everybody wait for Melania's landscaping design. What they don't know is God, our Loving Universal Designer, will make Melania's design an outstanding beauty.
That's hardly a fair assessment. Bette Midler is snarky to her, but what else can you expect from a jealous, fat dumpy lounge signer has-been. I'd think you would be kinder, Jon.
If there had then it would have at least had some color. Is she planning for husband funeral or what?
We can hope that he'll blow up like a hot balloon that he looks like and go merrily to another planet.
Load More Replies...Actually, if you read what they did, they MOVED the trees to a location that they could grow to full maturity without killing off all of the other plants underneath (roses especially) who were never meant to be in shade. None of the color was removed they have simply been pruned back as part of the process. Also the tulips shown in all of the iconic past images are a spring flower - they don't bloom in summer (it's August now) and the color itself isn't much different than before.
There are plenty of late summer/ fall flowers that are colorful, and she chose white and pastels. How can you say that the color isn't much different when you go from bright swaths of color 3/4ths of the year, much like Monet's Gardens at Giverny (which were planted with 3 season flowers and architectural plants for winter) to faded pastels and white? The change is drastic, even comparing the Late Summer/Autumn Rose Garden colors to this.

I like rainbows and I’m not gay, so maybe just exuberant happy people? Or maybe just people who don’t want the White House to look like a Tim Burton film?
what does that mean i don't get it i am still young. People, explain?
YOU SHOULD HAVE WENT WITH THAT YOUNG GUY, GAY OR NOT, INSTEAD OF THAT BRAIN DEAD OLD MAN.
The iconic Rose Garden came to being after President Kennedy and the first lady returned from a state visit to France. In the summer of 1961, they visited the gardener Rachel Lambert Mellon and invited her to bring the space back to life.
In a piece written for the White House Historical Association in the early 1980s, Mellon revealed that “Kennedy noted that the White House had no garden equal in quality or attractiveness to the gardens that he had seen and in which he had been entertained in Europe. There he had recognized the importance of gardens surrounding an official residence and their appeal to the sensibilities of all people.”
The garden was begun in the spring of 1962 and finished at the end of the same year. Most importantly, its creator said that “It was truly President Kennedy’s garden” and he always showed how much he cared about it.
This! What the heck is with her dark depressing style of decorating?
Look at the marriage she's in. It's a reflection of that.

Honestly, they're such a disgrace to the U.S. as a whole country. I hope people in the future decide to rule him out of history and say that Obama was elected for a 3rd term even though it's not possible. Also, I wanted to see how many morons decided that electing Trump was a good idea here.
We have to keep the lesson in order to learn from the mistake. Although Hitler is in the history books, tRump is actually the in the White House I suppose stupid people won't read anyway.

Then again, we must remember her rows of red “Handmaiden” Christmas trees. A woman of little taste and imagination—-of course, look who she married. Unless drumpf has a meltdown tantrum from sensory overload when he sees too many colors all at once.
OK. I am definitely not a fan of the Trumps, but let's be reasonable. Tulips are Spring. They would not be in a pic this time of year. August is typically the end of the rose season when people prune them. Interested to see what this looks like come July 2021. Not a fan of the paving but it does make the garden more accessable to some. Totally agree with you about her Xmas decorations.

Man, these Pandas must be REALLY bored if they find fault with a freaking GARDEN!
When I heard she was redoing the rose garden, I knew nothing good could come of it. Does anyone know if all the plants were just cut down? Or if the actual gardeners were able to dig them up and save them. She should Not have been allowed to do this! I agree it was just wanton destruction.
That Melania Trump took on a task so clearly associated with the Kennedys doesn’t come as a surprise, since President Trump told Fox & Friends that “We have our own Jackie O. It’s called Melania, Melania T.”
Today, the flowers in the garden are largely pastels chosen according to the tastes of the first lady, including taller white roses, which were in honor of the first papal visit to the White House by Pope John Paul II in 1979. The most obvious change to the garden was the addition of a 3-foot-wide limestone walking path bordering the central lawn.
But after the first lady tweeted the first images from her renovation, the new Rose Garden received many mixed reactions.
100% it looks like a cemetery now. It's so ugly and sad now. What a disgrace.
nope i think cemeterys look better (at least the ones i've been to do)

What's a "natural garden"? If it's natural, it isn't a garden by definition. The rose garden had a ton of problems with it. The drainage was poor, it wasn't wheelchair accessible, you couldn't grow roses well because of the mature trees, and it was poorly designed for the type of the events they wanted to hold. It desperately needed a makeover.
They weren't chopped down. They were moved to a different location to save them and the roses underneath. They should never have been planted there in the first place - it all would have ended up dying. She saved the cherry trees from death. Also, this comparison is from a past spring photo. Tulips don't bloom in summer. None of the actual color has been removed long term.
Me reading the title and text right before seeing the pictures; "Come on, there's plenty things goin worse in the White House, we don't need to grasp at str... Wait, these are the before/after pictures? What.The.Whitewashing.Hell happened here?!?"
Colorful flowers are symbols of diversity. Well, I've never heard such c**p in my life. Mark Twain said politicians and their wives need to be changed as regularly as babies diapers.
"Soul? We don't need soul! Color? We don't need color!"... and that sums up the Trumps IMHO
When Trump loses the Secret Service better watch him and his ilk to make sure they don't take or destroy anything else.
@Analyn Lahr Unfortunately whenever Trump does leave & pray to God we will find out the Great news November 3rd, not soon enough though! To the the point: Unfortunately Trump & his garden destroyer spouse will continue to have secret service for life, just scaled down, all President's receive that perk! Dwight D. I can't understand the logic of people who thought the Trumps were fit to be in their position. They're disgusting liars, manipulators, incredibly stupid, they do NOT think at all, and they're frauds. I used to want to meet the president when I turned 13, but now I don't want to meet any future or past presidents/first ladies except for Mr. and Mrs. Obama. They should've been elected for a 3rd term, which I know is not how it works. I know what I'm talking about. Though I'm only 14, even I could do a better job as president.
Sassy said it well, more than well, actually, extremely well, you go girl !!!
I am being totally unironic in this statement, this is not a joke, this is not me being making a joke at melania's expense. The toilet bushes genuinely look ,cooler, more dynamic and overall better then the paved over garden with the unoriginal lack of color.

Cemeteries in Eastern Europe are really vibrant, full of color, trees and flowers and singing birds, they tell stories and are not, suprisingly, somber or sad, they are not barren and devoid of feeling and Melania should know that if she had a shred of humanity in her; this new "garden" looks like an uneducated thruster's idea of "sophistication".

I guess Mia can't tell the difference between a crab apple (which was dying) and a cherry tree.
In public gardens like this, tulips are treated as an annual and new bulbs are planted every year. The loss of the trees are what's really sad.
Actually, the CRABAPPLE trees were simply relocated to other areas. If you have ever had a CRABAPPLE tree in your yard, you know: 1) they are beautiful, messy trees; 2) they require a lot of maintenance, 3) they are not CHERRY trees, and 4) any CRABAPPLE tree planted in the 1960's would be much bigger than those that were relocated.

Load More Replies...Well, guys, you know what the French did to their self-styled Sun King... Get on with it, willya?
There were roses there planted by more than a century of First Ladies. This wasn't a renovation or a restoration. It was an erasure
The original design sucked. Oh, and the trees are gone ALL YEAR LONG.... BTW, it was already ADA compliant! (The vitality of plants requires they be removed?!... Wow.) SO much wrong in this remark.
That tweet above, not my remark, altho' fair is fair, I'm no sweetie on a Monday.
Load More Replies...(1) "to bring back the original design" and remind us of a time when slaves were forced to build the White (only) House. (2) "ensure vitality of the plants" - pretty sure digging them up and replacing them did nothing for their vitality and (3) space can be made accessible without completely taxing it.
No , unfortunately they couldn't. Crabapple trees drop all sorts of sticky, bumpy fruit on the ground, which makes it harder for wheel-chair bound people to get around. This renovation helps differently-abled people.

gee, more expense, the location cannot be called "the rose garden", where in the sterility of the design are her planted white roses? Haven't seen one yet!
My grandparents had a beautiful flowering dogwood tree in their front yard. They are iconic in the city where they lived (Quincy, IL). After my grandpa died, my grandma sold the house and moved to Florida. The first thing the new owners did was cut down the dogwood. This reminds me of that. They probably tore out my grandpa's roses as well. I don't know. We couldn't stand to drive by any more after that.
I have no problem with people having an opinion, but they should at least get their facts straight. The rose garden has had the so called "central lawn" since it's redesign by Rachel Lambert Mellon in 1961. So no real change there. (Just carefully and deceptively cropped photos.) Those weren't cherry trees. They were crabapples. And the sidewalks were required by the ADA, which, yes, even the White House has to follow. So in summary: same layout, old crabapples removed, federally required sidewalks installed. Grrrr, the outrage.
Still looks hideous...even with the "facts straight".....and yes, having it go from soulful, bright and full of color to....this......YES grrrrrr....the outrage is right.
Load More Replies...A lot of the comments I've read show a lack of public gardening knowledge. For example, in public gardens, tulips are treated as annuals and new bulbs are planted every year. After they're done blooming in spring, they're dug up, thrown away, and replaced with summer annuals. D.C. is warm enough to have winter annuals such as pansies and flowering kale.
Tulips grown in residential gardens last only a few seasons before they quit blooming. That is, if they survive being munched on by chipmunks and rabbits. I gave up tulips in favor of daffodils and narcissuses because they're poisonous to wildlife and they reproduce.
Load More Replies...The trees were crabapple trees and were blocking the sun from the flowers (roses) that depend on large amounts of light. The trees were transplanted elsewhere. The sidewalks were uneven and lopsided. The roses have been deadheaded (pruned) so that they may continue to grow.
And the bulbs have been removed so there's nary a crocus nor tulip to be found.

A garden re-design typically means removing stuff. Whether you like the new garden or not is a matter of personal choice. Interestingly, those people who are offended most probably do what helps Trump the most: taking unimportant topics as this as a decoy to get people wondering about the real issues.
I agree, this is a personal choice and you either like it or you don't. There are enough things to get outraged about atm without getting upset about a garden.
Load More Replies...Hope people understand the trees are in the greenhouse and not destroyed. And the rose bloom in May not August. So give it a season an see how it looks. Also it's nice there is pathways for disabled folks to use. Everyone hates on her for just trying to do a nice thing.
We have roses blooming now, and I'm a c**p gardener. And the trees are already shedding their leaves here
Load More Replies...I just read more into this and this is what I found. Every administration has done some sort of change to the garden, it is pretty much expected. The recent changes include better drainage system for healthier plants, and for the first time, access for the physically impaired. The crabapple trees which were removed were replanted elsewhere on the property. Melania does prefer pastel colors so the scheme may not be as vibrant as prior, but it is worth noting that most of the flowers were just planted, and anyone who knows anything about flowers knows that it takes tome for the plants root systems to take hold, and only after that will it fully bloom. Furthermore, the before pictures were taken in spring (tulips bloom only in spring), which adds a tremendous amounof color which wouldn't be showing now
I do not like the Trumps. I am simply pointing out how blinded people have willingly become. You can see only want you allow yourself to see.
Load More Replies...The tulips and trees were a mess, now the columns and the building look way better, why hide them? And no, I do not like Trump, or his wife, but this garden is simply modern, and not half bad.
I've seen the old version only in photos on this page - but that did look like the typical amateur garden: just plant what ever you can find at a discount in the local garden center. I guess there were emotional and historical values with the old one. But this new version fits the location better. The White house is not a friendly, cuddly place. One of the places where the world's future is decided. This new garden echoes that nicely.
Load More Replies...Yes, I do think sidewalks were needed for the disabled, but even then, why have the sidewalks if there isn't any color to look at??
