Many of us have our pet peeves when eating out and some of us are pickier than others when it comes to quality. But whoever the customer might be, food industry establishments have a duty to maintain certain standards, from hygiene and the quality of ingredients to good management and serving practices. If you let these slip, you risk destroying your reputation.
Some internet users spilled the beans about the restaurants that they absolutely refuse to eat at in a thread on r/AskReddit. They explained exactly what happened to make them feel this way. Check out their stories and opinions as you scroll down below. And just to be on the safe side, make sure you’re not snacking on anything at the moment!

Hooters because come on. The whole theme is "[Breasts]! Someone's [breasts]! We also serve food." I just can't bring myself to go there, even when people rave about the wings. And I freaking love wings! In this day and age, Hooters should not be a thing. It's gross.
I agree with OP. Have never been to one because the whole concept is "pay more for food served by tiddies". It seems degrading to the women and I know as a man I find it kind of insulting they think I'm that simple.
I know I'll get down voted for this but women are not required to work there. Meaning they could choose to work somewhere else. I don't necessarily agree with Hooters business model but employment is at will and Hooters doesn't make their business model of tiddies and wings a secret. I don't patron the restaurant cause I don't agree with it nor care to oogle while I eat but that's just me.
Load More Replies...I’m glad to see this is #1 on this post. A degrading place for women, just like bikini barista drive-through coffee stands, strip clubs, etc. Unfortunately, the people who frequent these establishments tend to tip the staff extremely well which is why most girls work there - money. Do we think that a woman, who (hypothetically) could make the exact same money at a job where she’s treated as an equal with her clothes on, would instead choose a job where she was treated as solely an object of lust, and be in a state of constant undress?
Yes, gross, and please don't come up with a male version. That's gross too.
what would the male version be called? 'Plums'? Weiners would be too easy...

Oh yeah, I guess she would be pretty old now. Didn't know she moved to the UK. I met her back in the 80s in the greyhound bus station in Seattle, WA. Kidding of course - likely different woman. But random lady in the waiting area starts talking to me, seems a bit mental - then at one point says, "I'm not wearing a bra. See!" (and pulls up her shirt to reveal she is telling the truth.) There was absolutely nothing remotely 'sexual' about our limited polite chit chat but for some reason she chose to share that information / view.
Load More Replies...Besides I feel uncomfortable going to Hooter (and similar) the only times I had to eat there were business lunches with developmental and emotionally stunted young executives that kept making jokes, comments, flirt with the servers and wanted me to participate in the banter. Unfortunately, in both cases one of the people taking me to lunch was the company owner and there was nobody I could complain to. Frankly, I am OK with the girls working there. Free country and all that, plus if they can make good money off these troglodytes, I am OK with that too. It's the men going there that make my stomach turn.
I'm a straight guy and I don't have any issues with places like this or stripclubs but they aren't for me. I always feel self-conscious more than anything. But if the women working there are okay with people coming in wanting to look at you then more power to everyone.
Ummm no one force anyone to apply a job there. Myself was there for my eye exam and received 20/ 20 vision. Sadly they no longer serve seafood.
There’s a small restaurant in my area that was at the forefront of lockdown denial, vaccine denial, and mask denial during the pandemic and lockdown. They forbid their employees from wearing masks, required only those who were vaccinated to wear masks, would refuse service to anyone vaccinated or wearing masks, and the owner was leading protests and giving interviews about ending the lockdowns, against mask mandates, and against the vaccines.
So, I refuse to go there, as do a lot of other people now. Which is a shame because it was one of my favorite restaurants pre pandemic, but given how hard they fought the health department on covid response, it made me wonder what else they’ve been ignoring or hiding on the health front.
I avoid what used to be one of my favorite restaurants. When things were opening back up, the owner went on social media complaining that they only had the staff to open one of their three locations because "no one wants to work anymore." He claimed everyone was living large off their stimulus checks and didn't want to come back to work. I looked up what he got for a PPP loan and it was over $400,000 and he didn't have to pay it back. There is a reason his staff didn't want to come to work for him, but it wasn't due to their paltry stimulus checks.
Yup, here in the UK we have a chain of pubs called JD Wetherspoons (Google them), who's owner - a right wing vaccine denier and general idiot - who only sent his staff home following the threat of prosecution. He then refused to apply for government grants to pay his laid off staff (although it turned out, he actually did but kept it hidden) as a consequence, most of the staff who couldn't go to work got NO income throughout the pandemic and had to claim benefits. The upshot of this is that when the country started to open up again, very, very few of the staff wanted to work for the company and as they could only recruit locally, many local people refused both to work for the company, or drink in their pubs. Shooting oneself in the foot comes to mind. F**k you Tim Martin, you cockwomble.
Load More Replies...Similar situation here. We have a vacation home in Vermont and we couldn't even travel there during the beginning of the pandemic because of travel restrictions. But there was one newcomer restaurant in the village who flouted the COVID restrictions and crowded the place with maskless patrons and workers. They became a super spreader site and cases spiked in the town. I refuse to go there still even though they have a really nice setup.
Likely everything. Not believing in vaccines isn't that far off of not believing in washing ones' hands, in general, and especially disgusting, after taking a dump. I've heard of such people, and I've heard of large groups sharing the same diarrhea, even - jokingly, but still - naming it after the fryery they went to.
There is a wide-spread lie that vaccinated people supposedly "shed" something. It's BS, of course, shedding is not a thing.
Shedding IS actually a thing, at least according to the CDC, NIH, and a bunch of .org and .edu websites. This only occurs with attenuated, or live vaccines, like the flu, MMR, measles, polio, and small pox. I actually had to get a small pox vaccine. We had around 5k people isolated on a ship. Thankfully, our isolation time was during the time we were crossing the Atlantic.
Load More Replies...Same here with a loudly pro-Brexit pub chain owner (Weatherspoons). Only convenient pub between work and train so was a natural place as well as great grounds (of course mediocre as pub). Some sunny days I miss it.
Smart owner - I would have gone there in a heartbeat. Do you not yet realize the SCAM that perpertrated ont he American people??? omg
If they refused to obey heath regulations during the pandemic, they probably weren't following the other regulations before the pandemic. Or now.
Because it's 100% irrelevant for 7billion people except at most the 100thousand that live near it. Do you need to know it's Marco's Diner near some specific interstate exit? No.

Jimmy Johns. Owner of chain into exotic animal trophy hunting big time. Why go out of your way to kill a giraffe or something?
Addendum: You can google this info for proof. Tons of pictures of him and his “trophies“ all over internet.
Jimmy John's is owned by Roark Capital and 98% of the restaurants are franchises. Mr. Big Game Hunter isn't getting a penny from your sandwich.
There’s even a pic of him spooning completely naked with the great white shark he killed. He’s disgusting.
It's pretty cowardly to kill an old animal from a distance with an overpowered gun. If they wanted to be as manly as they imagine themselves to be, they should go after healthy and virile predators with their bare hands.
It is basic. As for the trophy hunting, f^^k that all to H^^l. I'll not support that bs.
I don’t eat at Jimmy John’s, Taco John’s, or Papa John’s. I do like Long John Silvers occasionally.
People argue that these animals aren't endangered and/or need or are set aside to be culled but that completely misses the point of trophy hunting. If you subsistence hunt and the prey happens to be trophy then good on you. Killing animals because you have a tiny d**k isn't a good reason.
Too bad this guy is such a horrible person. We liked to take our dog past Jimmy John's from time to time for the "free smells" they advertise.
The CDC estimates that around 48 million people or 1 in 6 Americans get sick from foodborne diseases each year. Of those, 128k are hospitalized and around 3k individuals lose their lives. This is why it is so vital to maintain high hygiene standards everywhere: from farms and silos to warehouses, grocery stores, and kitchens.
Growing, storing, cooking, and serving food responsibly can prevent people from getting ill. Labeling and storing groceries properly, as well as washing your hands and keeping the kitchen clean is about much more than listening to what your manager tells you: it can literally save lives.
Chick Fil A. That is just too much bigotry for a s****y chicken sandwich.
Best chain fast food in my opinion. I was never drawn to it as a food court staple, however in 2003 one was put in next to our office before all the gay shaming, Christian values c**p flared. They often brought breakfast for our large office and gave out coupons for free food, free! no strings attached. I did the past again after the s**t hit the fan. Then I learned a gay kid I'd known since forever was working at one. Went and discovered many other obvious gay employees. I like their food, the cleanliness of the restaurants, they well groomed and well spoken employees. I hate they are closed on Sundays. But I kind of like that too, for employees sake.
I've never been but my husband went with coworkers who insisted he had to try it. He finally went and was incredibly disappointed. He said it tasted like any other fast food chicken sandwich. It wasn't anything special. I've said it before, but I don't understand the hype. It was founded in the 40s. It's been around forever. When I was a kid in the 80s, no one raved about it. It was just another crappy choice at the mall food court. Then somehow, in the 2000s sometime, it was suddenly this place everyone just had to go, and the chicken is just suddenly so amazing. I feel it's just a trendy thing to like, and nothing more. Everyone knows their chicken isn't any different than any other fast food chicken, but they've bought into the hype.
same, even as a queer person I can choose. I may not like their choices but I can still like the food, plus their sandwich is rated most healthy
Load More Replies...I don't care what they do with their profits. They've never not served me because I'm gay and the sandwichs are good.
although I prefer a culvers chicken sandwich, chick fil a does have some dang good ice cubes
I'm not a Chick-Fil-A fan but, judging from the constant traffic, something they're doing is working.
I tried their food once. Worst food poisoning of my life just for some mediocre chicken. Not worth it at all.

The pure hatred from the left is amazing. No souls in these people at all. Talk about EVIL!!!
Panera Bread, extremely overpriced, bland food.
I worked there when they first opened in north NJ, back in 2001/02. The binder we found hidden under one of the registers has VASTLY different calorie counts for their food than what they claim. But they did always donate the food left over at the end of the day instead of throwing it away.
not at all over priced for the quality of the food. and definitely not at all bland. it all depends on what you order. if you are used to eating fast food then you probably wont like panera...
My first time asst Panera bread was my last. The food was the most boring I have ever encountered. When you are named after bread (sort of...) your breads should be exceptional. Theirs were as tasty as wonder bread.
Their soup is really good. So is their sourdough bread. The rest is meh. But I like their tomato and onion soups a lot.
It’s essential to keep in mind that no matter the restaurant or chain, the quality of service can vary a lot depending on the location, staff, and time of day. Just because someone has had an awful experience at a particular fast-food restaurant doesn’t necessarily mean that all establishments in the chain are awful. That’s why it’s important to look at the quality of the food and service, as well as the hygiene standards in more than one location.
Of course, this doesn’t make it okay to let standards slip anywhere: your customers certainly deserve to be treated with respect. If you got bad food poisoning or saw truly disgusting behavior during your meal, your experience is certainly a bad one. The establishment isn’t entitled to your return patronage.
I hope this doesn't come off as snobbish, but the honest answer is any chain restaurant. I'm fortunate enough to live in a region packed with independent restaurants, and I prefer to spend my money at local businesses. It's not a hard choice to make money-wise, either, as mediocre chain eateries don't charge mediocre chain eatery prices anymore. If I'm going to spend $18 on a plate of chicken alfredo, then I'm not going to do it at f*****g Olive Garden.
I love real Italian food, but Olive Garden has its place. Unlike most mid- level chain restaurant, the food doesnt taste like reheated lean cuisine.
Load More Replies...I like the salad and breadsticks. The only reason to go there is because you get a bit more with having unlimited with the meal than with other places. I like filling myself on the bread/salad and bringing most of the meal home. Especially when they have the promotion to takeaway an extra meal for free.
I do this too .. I order a meal but ask them to wrap it up for take-away and then just enjoy salad and bread for lunch.
Load More Replies...The magic of the internet is difference of opinion. And Olive Gardens chicken and shrimp carbonara is absolutely delightful.
I'd generally agree ... but at the same time SOME chain restaurants offer something you can't get somewhere else. I love(d) TGI Friday's because of their Jack Daniels' ribs and Long Island Iced Teas. Nobody had anything even remotely close. (I live in Europe). So we'd go to TGIF just for those. Sadly, it closed. I'm doing my damndest but I can't recreate TGFI JD Ribs at home. Also, the perfect Long Island Iced Tea just won't happen at my house.
A friend and I used to enjoy gong to OG for their soup and salad lunch. It used to be very reasonably priced for a light lunch fair. A bit under 9 bucks as I recall. But they kept raising the price to where it is about the same as an entre meal. They also reduced the amount of salad and breadsticks they give you. You get refills but less up front means having to wait to flag down the server. I've never liked the forced conversation management makes them say but I used to enjoy their soup and salad. Now I just don't go there at all.
That national chain and all national chains are employing locals who work for them. And the local supply chain benefits from them too. I don't care about the 4 or 5% profit they make.
What's wrong with Olive Garden? They always treat me like family! The hostess ignores me, the server asks to borrow money and the busboy asked if I could help him move next weekend. Just kidding. It's a joke. But seriously, aside from the fact that it is not real Italian food, it's OK. I do like their salad.
Olive Garden started my love for pickled hot peppers. They were always the first thing I grabbed from the salad bowl
Have you ever eaten a full meal at a real italian home? if you have, Olive Garden doesn't even come close
All the ones in my area that caved to the selfish anti-science nutjobs and opened for indoor dining when our state health department told them to stay closed. If they don’t give a s**t about spreading disease, they aren’t f*****g getting my money.
If a restaurant is going to open doors in the middle of a public health emergency, I have little faith in the cleanliness of their establishment.
Don't worry, they pour bleach on your food to get rid of the germs. /s

I have a list of businesses I will never give another $1 because of what they did during COVID. Its not just restaurants.
Maybe it had nothing to do with any selfish anti-science nutjobs. Maybe the owner was just greedy and irresponsible. That can happen here and there.
Or maybe the owner was trying to keep his business from going under.

Golden Corral. Walked into one once in Florida. A small kid walking past the food bar was putting his hand in every tray he passed. Out we go.
Omg we went to one in florida and a child was vomiting. The mother was grabbing plates for him to vomit on from the buffet. No no no
Honestly, I have not been to one of these since 2020. All buffets are suspish to me now.
Used to LOVE these buffets...but then realized...how long has that food been sitting out, people sneezing etc etc etc....
I have heard horror stories about the one here in our city...people taking bites of food and putting it back, grabbing food with their dirty hands, or dropping food on the floor and putting it back.
However, what this means is that people tend to focus on the negatives rather than the positives and there’s always a broader picture. For instance, an otherwise respectful company might have issues with a few groups of demotivated, untrained, and mismanaged employees at a few key locations. It’s up to the business to identify these issues and solve them as soon as possible.
That might mean offering employees proper training and incentives to maintain high hygiene and service standards. Or it might take opportunities for growth, a fair(er) wage, and a few personal heart-to-heart conversations to figure out what’s going on.
Hooters. Waiting 45 minutes for a hamburger and baked beans and then immediately having diarrhea doesn't do anything for me.
SirWriteALot: Your comment is degrading to women. Yes, the female employees do choose to work there but I guarantee it’s because of the money. Just remember: each of them is someone’s precious daughter, sister, mother. Or is your opinion that you should be treated with dignity and respect, but it’s ok to degrade women into mere objects just for your own pleasure?
Also they're human women, not just somebody's sister daughter or mother
Load More Replies...If you immediately have diarrhea, it wasn’t Hooters that made you sick. Food borne illness stews for six-twelve hours before striking. But boycotting Hooters is a good idea just bc their business model is gross.
To you maybe Kelli but that's just your opinion. There are enough others who will disagree with you. So boycott away. Nice not to see you there
Load More Replies...Medical comment here - the waiting didn't cause your bowels to open, and even with viral food poisoning, it's usually at least 6 hours before it kicks in and is 12- 48 hours with bacterial food poisoning. Never been to Hooters - it's not a 'thing' in the UK.
Immediate diarrhea? Not possible. When I eat something that doesn't agree with me, it takes around 30 minutes before it happens.
In my particular case I have immediately a reaction. Normally vomiting immediately after eating something that my stomach rejected or running to the toilet...and this in seconds

We used to have one in my town but it closed due to poor service. I ordered a 6 oz steak there once and it was 4 oz of grizzle. Waitress shrugged it off.
Potbelly subs, ruths chris and all of the others whose f**kwad leadership stole PPP money from the small businesses it was actually intended to support (i give no shits if they gave it back when caught)
thankfully we dont have one here. we have plenty of really good sandwich shops here
Though a good manager will know how to motivate most employees, there are bound to be some bad apples who don’t care about their jobs or their customers. In some fringe cases, you may need to let someone go.
But that shouldn’t be your first response. If standards are slipping, there are usually deeper problems than just a few unruly servers and line cooks.
KFC. I dont know why but I get sick an hour later every time.

I love KFC. But it's slowly killing me and I don't really feel like stopping....
maybe you are allergic to something they use, i have never had a problem eating at any chicken establishment and i used to work at kfc and still frequent them.
I stopped eating at all restaurants. because the prices went up, portions went down and quality went to s**t.
if you want the restaurant experience at home, just add lots of butter to the dish you are making.
The restaurant experience i want is: not having to get the ingrediants, make the food, clean the kitchen after. I am gladly paying for sitting in a chair, being able to choose from a variety of dishes and then someone brings it to me. When i am done, all evidence is whisked away.

Mostly us, too! Occasionally, we eat at Burger King because we get great coupons in the mail. But I can get a sandwich the equivalent of 1.5 foot long subs at Subway for $7.49 (they're normally $9.99, but we get discounts). My son and I split it, and we're good.
Load More Replies...It depends on the restaurant. We have some here we need to get boxes to rake home what we can't finish they're so generous with the portions and the prices are well within anyone's budget. Good food, good service.
100% this. Places are always dirty, understaffed, out of something, or something's broken, and most treat their employees like s**t. Small family businesses, maybe, but nothing bigger than 2 locations.
Wow. So you've eaten in every restaurant to test this theory? Restaurant quality where I live has gone up massively since Covid to attract people back

Noodle & Company and Chili’s
I honestly don’t know what I am supposed to order in either of these restaurants. They got so many things and they all suck
Oh and Pizza Hut because their pizza sucks
Any 'Restaurant' that has more than 8 main courses on their menu (unless it's a variation on a theme - like Pizza - ) should be looked at closely, especially if there are more than 50 covers in the place.
I can't eat pizza hut so I have no idea what their pizza is like. Something in their pizza gives me a stomach reaction and makes me feel sick for like a week. I don't judge the restaurant though, that wouldn't be fair.
I LOVE Noodles & Company! I always got their Wisconsin mac with parm chicken bites!!!
I disagree with Pizza Hut; my soon works there. But I ordered from Noodles thru Grubhub and someone almost immediately used my card for $300 worth of stuff. Got it cleared, but will never order from Noodles again. Never have had that problem from anyplace else before or since, so I doubt it was Grubhub.
IF you think they make the best pizza then you have never had an actual slice of real pizza.

Subway - because of food poisoning & there are better sub places in our town.
Golden Corral - food has always been subpar & I always felt sick after leaving…and not due to overeating.
I've always thought Subways smell really bad. We have one in our neighborhood and just walking past it, the smell is terrible. The one my cousin always wanted to go to in college, smelled. They just stink and it isn't appetizing.
Golden Corral is out simply due to it being a buffet. If I wanted to eat the skin flakes of the hundreds of people who came before me in line I'd... well... I guess I'd eat at a buffet.
I grew up in the are where Subway originated. It's so sad to see what it turned into. I can't go there.
I've been hearing that the subway in the Usa versus the ones in Europe are completely different. The European ones being the place for ok subs and US ones being nasty food poisoning centrals. I like the occasional subway sub in Finland so that's my only personal point of reference
i love golden corral but i dont feel like travelling to where they moved to, and i have read industry mags on subway and for years refused to go there...but being they have been bought out by someone else, their products have greatly improved and many new sandwiches have been added.
I'll bypass a Subway joint every time and head straight to Mr. Sub.
subway-Service is poor and food is sorry. I haven't bought anything from them in over 12 yrs+
I prefer Jersy Mike's where all the meats and cheeses are sliced fresh on the spot. The only thing I pass on is there burnt to a cinder bacon.
Will pass on BK. It's always been the participation trophy of fast food.
Wendy's has gone downhill severely, especially the wait times (I might be overly critical because I worked there one summer)
The BK in town gets my order wrong every time. No exceptions. I ordered just fries once and they still got it wrong. (Wrong size) I honestly don't know how they're still open.
Sorry but the last one I went to wins the prize for how are they still open…. So many things wrong with my order. Paid for items I didn’t get, hadn’t left yet but told they don’t know how to give me. Refund for what I paid for that they didn’t have. I refused to leave without the refund and they were livid. Mostly because they didn’t know how and that wasn’t a good enough reason for me to say ok keep my money lol.

Wendy's went from a go-to prior to the pandemic to a maybe, I don't know, nah, after.
We have a Wendy's near our house that I don't know how it stays open. The wait times are the absolute worst I've ever experienced, and it happens every time I go there. I think "it can't be this bad every time" but somehow it is. Has to be bad management because it's different people each time. We really like Wendy's and wish the one really close to us was better but we've given up on it.
I respect your opinion, but for gods sake they’re basically the only establishment that sells onion rings, and they’re actually pretty good. I’ll be damned if I stop eating there.

There's a restaurant group in my city owned by a predator. He's had several charges levied against him and even more allegations, and if you meet him you immediately know they're all true. Through money, best/sleaziest lawyers, witness intimidation, threats of defamation suits, etc he has managed to avoid any meaningful repercussions. Won't step foot in any of his restaurants.
I hate when people go on about shady businesses, but refuse to call the business out by name. Super sus every time.
Expect it's more to avoid a libel/slander suit. If someone gets off of a charge, then legally stating they did what they're "not guilty" of, leads to very expensive lawsuits
Load More Replies...Might be SF Bay Area. That being said, sa and harassment are unfortunately pretty common in the restaurant industry.
Load More Replies...why not say who you are referring to instead of conveniently leaving off the name...that is what this thread is all about, naming/shaming the particular restaurants.
I actually assumed the name wasn’t mentioned bc everyone on here isn’t local, so we wouldn’t know it. Like how when I comment here I’ll say “this happened to my friend” about something…. I don’t give the name bc it’s not relevant. I get that this is a little different than that example but that is what I assumed. I assumed the poster didn’t mention the name bc it’s a local joint that you won’t know.

I worked at Domino's for three days when I was 17. Only job I've ever quit on the spot and the only restaurant chain I refuse to eat at.
When you make the pizzas, you pick the toppings out of the tubs and sprinkle them on the base, which sits on a bunch of metal bars over a big metal tray. Periodically you remove the tray, pick the stray toppings out, and put them back in the tubs. So far so logical, right? Third day I worked a close shift and the manager told me to tip the tubs of toppings into the big bags of toppings in the fridge. Asked him when we threw the bags away, and he said "when they're empty."
Nope nope nope nope nope. Nasty, nasty bastards.
Not that I’m defending Domino’s, but any story about the actions of one franchise probably does not represent the whole chain. Often, these stories are individual franchise owners cutting corners to save money, not because of corporate policy.
The store I worked at for 15 years was not bad other than the lazy teens couldn't be bothered with picking up a piece of trash from the lobby. Health inspector came often, as did corporate inspectors. Good owner.
Load More Replies...i would have reported them to the health department and maybe to gordon ramsays kitchen nightmares
Domino's (at least in the UK) is insanely overpriced, considering I know places you can get decent pizza for way less. (EG: A plain margharita at dominos, large13.5 inch is 18.99, but I could get a 16 inch pizza for 10.50 at my local pizza shop, not that I would because that is too much pizza for a lactose intolerant xD)
I don't *refuse*, as I love their breakfast, but I won't eat Mcdonalds for lunch or dinner because it's never not made me immediately sick afterwards.
Well, the title of the thread is “What Restaurants Do You Refuse To Go To And Why?”.
Load More Replies...The McDonald's by me is actually really good. They keep it clean, my order is very seldom wrong, and the food is fresh. I mean, it's still McDonald's, but it's decent.
The 3 closest ones to me are on top of their game. The staff are amazing, the food is never an issue. Getting the wrong order does happen at one of them a lot. I should do a better job checking before I drive off.
Load More Replies...Weird. I'm opposite. Used to crave egg mcmuffins, but either covid changed my tastes, or nature changed my tastes, or they changed the taste.
I don't have a problem with them, the continuity between stores across country is no longer there. The Egg McMuffin In the Sierra Vista, Arizona store is so much tastier than the one I get at the Mickey "Ds' here in New braunfels,TX.
i have never gotten sick from eating there, and i love their food. sounds like maybe you have a problem with an ingredient, not the chain or the food itself.
At my school they put a McDonald's burger and fries on display as an experiment on the first of October, 2019, it still hasn't decomposed and that is not a sign of being healthy.
Bigger issue with McDonalds is it USED to be a place people (teens/kids mostly) could go with just pocket money and get something to eat. Now it costs as much as a standard restaurant. McDs food is not good enough to charge me the same as a local restaurant. I only go there now if I have a coupon that puts price back in line with how they should be.
Every now and then I am jonsing for McDs. Then inevitably 30 minutes after eating, comes the sicky feeling. Why do they taste so yummy only to hurt me so? 😭😭😭
My husband is a restaurant equipment repair tech and McD's is number one on his "do not eat here" list. No, the ice cream machine isn't broken, the factory settings have shut it down due to not being cleaned properly. He's seen cockroaches, rats and black mold in/around the machines. I'll just make me a QP w/cheese at home, thanks.
Papa John’s. I’ve had better pizza from the freezer section of grocery stores. Denny’s, because they’re overpriced and the food goes through me faster than a worm through mud. Pizza Hut. Way overpriced for what you get. I miss the old days where you could actually sit in the restaurant and have your pizza fresh from the oven, instead of half cooled. Boston Pizza barely avoids my list, but only because I LOVE the perogie pizza and their $5 personal pizza day.
It’s the only thing I ever get at BP, it’s really tasty!
Load More Replies...i detest papa johns, dennys used to be good, but has deteriorated over the years, including the rotten service and unclean restaurants. dont have an issue with pizza hut. and never heard of boston pizza
I've only ever eaten once at a Boston Pizza, and the food was so bland and tasteless that I've never been back. I ordered fettuccini alfredo, and got rubbery pasta with just cream. I didn't taste any parmesan or salt, or anything else. Very weird. My ex's meal was not good either, he said.
The Denney's going straight through you thing is because of the griddle oil they use
Wife and I recently went to Pizza Hut. Order from the register(no waitstaff) once you decide, no problem. Get a soda from the cooler(no fountain)...ok. Open trash and bottle return(Michigan) cans by the dinnerware...nope,nope,nope,. Called Corporate, they say it's ok. I say it's not.
I wish restaurants actually showed their kitchen on their CCTV on a large screen up front in the reception and restaurant area. Very few actually do like Japanese restaurants.
People watch their meal being made right in front of them at Subway, but there are many problems that doesn't prevent.
Nope to that. Some people get overly nervous when watched and I prefer not getting a piece of someone's finger or blood drippings in my food. I especially don't want to see it happen.
That's just completely unnecessary. Open kitchens can be a great concept and offer a different dining experience of restaurants that choose to operate that way but nobody owes anyone a glimpse into their kitchen. If you have some kind of trust issue that you need to see your food being prepared then you probably shouldn't eat there.
I used to be a restaurant consultant and a certified food safety expert. I don't trust most restaurants. And you would be surprised what you can't see in open concept kitchens. I remember observing food being sent out at one and a mouse walked out from under a counter and looked at me like I should be serving it. After closing, the owner found an entire nest under a cooling unit.
Load More Replies...most places are cleaner in the back than you presume, than they are in the front of the restaurant.
McD. Because it's no longer food.
ANY "fast food restaurant." I ate at them when I was younger and they were a fraction of the price of better dining. Now that the prices are comparable I'll never visit one again.
I went to a chemical supply store in Burbank once with a friend who was a chemist. A salesman was having a ling talk with a customer about chemicals that make food juicier, or last longer. Turns out he worked for a fast-food chain named after a children's toy.
You can buy 1000 Island dressing at the grocery store.
Load More Replies...White castle. When you see roaches laying dead in the soda dispenser or under tables you can kinda assume what the kitchen is like.
I have to laugh.... White Castle burgers were the original "Sliders". Then, some brilliant marketing person thought that was a cool phrase, and now everyone (Arby's, etc.) advertises their "Sliders" Hey.. stupid... they are called "Sliders" because they "slide right through you". Not something that you should be embracing....
So that's why their burgers have that slight crunchy texture. I always thought it was onions.
Cold hamburgers, fries with freezing burn and anemic orange drink. No thanks!
They actually have a really nice huge brand new White Castle in Orlando that was great, and that is a lot for me to say since I honestly do not like WC
Buffalo Wild Wings. $13 for a frozen burger patty and unwashed beer glasses. Get the f**k out of here
I'm not a fan of places that are overly loud, especially with loud music or TVs which only force everyone in the place to talk at high volume to be heard.
Load More Replies...give me wing stop any day of the week. i detest buffalo wild wings, i always leave with a migraine from how loud the patrons and tvs are.
I don't go there any more either. I know the price of wings went up everywhere, but it's ridiculous to pay that much for wings. Several local, independent places in my area have great wings. They had to raise their prices too, but not as much as BDubs.
As a former pest controller, any restaurant that I did pest control work for
I'm not sure I understand..did they really suck at their job? Every restaurant has pest control work done
every single restaurant has pest control to avoid getting pests, give me a break...thats by regulation.
Fast food, and national chains. Considering there isn’t much cooking /skill involved. Mostly take out of freezer and throw into oven, fryer etc. I don’t see the point in paying for someone to basically reheat a frozen food product to me and charge me 200% mark up for it. I’m hyper aware of where I dine out/spend my money food wise.
Just remember people that at a restaurant you're really not paying for the food, you're paying for the labor both to make the food serve the food food Etc the rent the utilities etc. So the markup in fancy restaurants is definitely there even though they may pay their Cooks more. But in reality in all of them you're not paying for the food you're paying for the services
Agree. If I can throw it in my Air Fryer at home, why am I paying YOU?
Red Robin because they charged me for a refill on my coffee! Free refills on fries and other sides but apparently they draw the line at coffee?!
Bottomless french fries. Taste good but the delay tactics are ridiculous. Have compared notes with friends - seems to be a thing at least at my local RR. Server takes a long time to get back around to so you can say you want more fries. Then the fries take a long time go get to the table. So you are about a half hour into eating your burger before you get your first, often modest size refill. So - "bottomless", but effectively not since they delay you out of it.
OG does the same with their "endless soup & salad". You get your bowl of soup, then the waitress disappears until it's time to clear the table. The salad you share with everyone else.
Load More Replies...Red Robin is one of the few chain sit-down restaurants I'll still go to. Their burgers are top notch, at least at the few around here.
Bottomless stuff is rare in the U.K., I’ve never really understood it. I know it’s a loss leader but aren’t we admitting that the quality is going to be a bit pish so they can at least make SOME profit from their bottomless items?
They make their fries a bit saltier so that you need a drink to rehydrate. The more fries you eat, the thirstier you get and the more drinks you buy. Check the prices and I bet the cost of fries is about 75 cents and the drinks are $2.50 each yet both pretty much cost 50 cents from the supplier. They make the money on the drinks, and it is easier to keep you in with free simple food than it is with drinks
When will you learn? French Fries anywhere are the cheapest food any fast food outfit has. They make a good profit on them though!
ive never been charged for refills of any kind...maybe that is just where you are located and the staff there.
Buffalo Wild Wings. My wife and I already have a favorite wing place. She and I tried BWW one time just to see. We both got sick to our stomachs with the wings we ordered. Throwing up all night, the works. I would understand if it was just her because she had a sensitive stomach. I never get sick from food. Also, we ordered two different types of wings, so it wasn't that we had the same wings. Never went back and will never go again.
Plausible, but this brand is prolific. I would blame the cook... if the entire chain was undercooking chicken, it would be more newsworthy than #20 something on a bored panda thread.
Tried them once, never going back! My order although tender, tasted burnt!
totally agree, i detest buffalo wild wings. never had an issue with the food just the restaurant and staff as a whole. but i will never go there again.
I also spent all night throwing up after the one and only time I ate there throwing up. I have heard a rumor that they undercook their wings.
Family chain restaurants. I have a microwave at home.
I like Culver's overall. Unfortunately one I went to had terrible service. The only employee there that cared at all was the manager.. Every other one I've been to has been good though.

Load More Replies...Masa. For the price of Masa I could fly to Mexico City and eat at both Pujol and Quintonil (#9 and #13 on the World's 50 Best), stay at a nice hotel and fly back, or eat at both Atomix and Le Bernardin.
Cracker Barrel as they were very discriminatory towards the LGBTQ community when it was legal and most likely would still be doing it. Also their menu doesn't wow me.
The title of this article should be "American restaurants to avoid at all costs".
Most of the restaurants listed here are chains. There wouldn't be much point otherwise. "Hey, avoid eating at the 12-seat Mom's Diner in East Sheepshît, Idaho."
Load More Replies...Most chains. If I wanted fast food I would go to wendys for a baconator because that s**t slaps harder than anything I've ever gotten at a chain. Also I prefer to support local businesses and their food is always better and made from scratch for the most part.
Boston Market. It was my first job in my last year of high school, so 2012-2013. Back then, the food was decent. Creamed Spinach with Sweet Thai Chili sauce (so good), Loaded Mashed Potatoes, even the Dill Potatoes, Rice Pilaf and the Fresh veggies were good. I particularly loved the Boston Carver Sandwich, the Cesar Salad, and the brownies. We were allowed to take the wings from the chicken home for free too, which was awesome. I only worked there for about 2 years, but I’ve found myself going back from time to time, but saw the decline in food quality as they added more “extras” like ribs. But I felt nostalgic (and high) so I Door Dashed the chicken sandwich, brownie, and a drink. It came in a Chinese plastic bag (one with generic thank you on it. Drink was 16 oz and even the creamed spinach was in a unmarked square container. The sandwich was fine but I believe it was standard white bread and not a roll. But they outsource their brownies to what seemed like dollar store quality- I couldn’t even finish that one bite. I went back and realized that the store didn’t even have the Boston Market name anymore so that’s probably why. Most locations in my area closed, the one I worked at turned into a Chick-Fil-A years ago. Such a shame because it was a good semi healthy choice but I’ll never get over how down hill they’ve become.
The food there has not been decent since it was Boston Chicken in the 90's. Every thing is thawed then thrown into a steamer before it is served. Everything comes prepackaged but the chicken. The place is disgusting and always has been.
They've been shut down in the NJ/NY area for underpaying their employees.
Went to try them out at their Charlotte, NC location, around 2000 or so. Was new year's eve.... They were out of meat.... 😆😆😆
I used to go to the original Boston Chicken (the original name) in Newton MA USA and it was amazing. Later they grew, expanded and sold and turned to c**p.
Boston Market is repulsive cafeteria food. Cgeap, salty, badly cooked.
In N Out; not worth the wait or to eat anything from said wait
We don't have these in my state but when I visited California I tried it, and I was not wowed. It's no better than any other burger joint. I absolutely do not get the hype. It's basically a West Coast Steak 'n Shake. For clarification. It's not bad but it's also not worth the praise it receives.
THANK YOU!!! I was waiting for In N Out to turn up on this list. I may be spoiled because I live in Portland, OR, but I can find better burgers from a truck than those. I know a bar 10 blocks from my work that makes bigger better SLIDERS than In N Out and they sell them for $2.50 a piece. In N Out sells something less good for $2.80. And it's a dive bar.
You know why they're called sliders, right? (See my white castle response....)
Load More Replies...100% agree In N Out is the single most over rated restaurant/cults in the world. Food is nasty. customers are deplorable, entitled, and rude.
My one rule of thumb is that if there’s tilapia in the menu at a sit down full service restaurant, I will not come back. Tilapia are roaches of the sea. Almost entirely farm raised. They cut off the heads because they’re often mutated from being fed bovine meal. No nutritional value. Cheap as sticks. Questionable in every sense. Any establishment serving it does not care about its consumers.
Yeah not sure where OP got his info from. I love tilapias
Load More Replies...according to the monteray bay aquarium seafood watch, most species or tilipia from most countries are perfectly good seafood options...https://www.seafoodwatch.org/recommendations/search?query=%3Aspecies%3BTilapia
Sorry but sea roaches are shrimps, but I think are delicious. That fact was told to me for my allergy doctor
I did read an article about a woman who lost her lower limbs after getting a bacterial infection from undercooked Tilapia but surely this isn't all Tilapia, it would appear from the comments that most people are fine with eating it, anywhere or anyone could mistakenly misprepare it or be supplied sick fish without realising. https://people.com/mom-amputation-flesh-eating-bacteria-eating-fish-7971076#:~:text=Laura%20Barajas%20of%20San%20Jose,limbs%20after%20eating%20contaminated%20fish.&text=Vibrio%20vulnificus%20is%20commonly%20called,around%20an%20open%20wound%20dies.%E2%80%9D
Apparently it matters where it was raised. Chinese raised tilapia have some very unhealthy practices employed at the farms they come from. So partly true.
Five Guys. I’m allergic to peanuts so my friends got me a Five Guys gift card for Christmas as a joke.
I mean, on this one, sorry about it? That doesn't make Five Guys a bad location, that means you're allergic to peanuts and can't have their fries or the snack peanuts they have around. Plenty of other spots to grab a burger and fries that aren't fried with peanut oil.
Depends on the degree of allergy. I'm allergic to peanuts, but have eaten it all (except the actual peanuts). And yes.....I am aware they use peanut oil.....
Load More Replies...Your Friends are a******s. I can't afford to spend $80 for my family to eat burgers and fries though
Better throw Chic-fil-a on that list too. Everything they have save for beverages are fried in peanut oil.
Frying in refined peanut oil is safe for those allergic to peanuts
Load More Replies...Chick fil a uses refined peanut oil for frying everything as well, refined peanut oil for frying is safe for people with peanut allergies, as for 5 guys snack peanuts that is a different story for those allergic
Five Guys burgers are worth paying for. My youngest son had to drive me around for some time - I was doing PT, taking pain killers, and couldn't move my arms or wrists - and the payment was FG. We couldn't bring my daughter there because of the peanuts (she's allergic to the smell too, as well as touching, or eating them) but that doesn't make it a bad restaurant.
There’s this one local restaurant that my mom likes where the first time I visited I spilled water on my lap, then like 10 minutes later my mom spilled a second glass of water on me. I refuse to go back to spite her
Once again, another item going against the actual concept and title of this article. An unfortunate experience doesn't make a restaurant bad, especially when it involves an accident that the owners, cooks, servers and anyone else working there had nothing to do with.
The title is merely “What Restaurants Do You Refuse To Go To And Why?”. That does not require that the restaurant be at fault for a post to fit.
Load More Replies...A very American list, as most of these chains do not exist outside the USA. But also, chain restaurants aren't a big thing here. of course there are the occasional fast food giants like MacDonalds, Burger King, KFC or Subway, other than that, chains with standardized menus are mostly confined to Autobahn stops (Serways and Tank&Rast come to mind). Unfortunately that has begun to change, though... :(
So here's a fun fact. When businesses start to struggle they sell out to private equity firms, which are financial market businesses that buy businesses wholesale, liquidate their assets, restructure their workforce, and convert them into revenue generators under original branding. Basically, Wall Street squeezes everything out of them that isn't absolutely required to function, and lets them operate at a profit until they finally become insolvent. It's a massive scheme by rich investors to milk industries dry while providing little product or service. This is why so many of your favorite stores have turned to s**t in every way imaginable, while the megacorporations own more shares of their own competition. Welcome to late stage capitalism.
Most chain restaurants in the US are for s**t; low-quality and designed to get the corporate big-wigs and shareholders big profits. Which is why I like food trucks; mostly independent owners just trying to make a living and heavily inspected and regulated in my town. We have so many food cart pods here with great foods from so many cultures. Yum! Support your local independent restaurateurs!
European here. I avoid McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Dominos, Subway and Starbucks. Basically all those international food chains. Because I prefer to support local restaurants and both quality and quantity of local restaurant dishes usually are better. Also I don't want to support restaurants that play a big part in killing the Amazon forest because of their meat demand. But to each their own I guess.
Hardee's/Carls Jr is HORRENDOUS!!! I used to work there and it was so disgusting. Everything is way overpriced and they trained you to basically screw over customers. (Like pinching the fry boxes when filing them up). They also forced me to work as a manager for the majority of the time that I worked there without paying me the managers wage. There was no overtime pay. I could go on and on. Plus the owner of the franchise is a Trump humper.
Can't argue with anyone's personal opinions but if you don't like or believe in the practices or quality of fast food then don't go and buy it. Not everyone gets sick from eating fast food. If you are a generally healthy eater then, of course, your body is not going to be happy with putting c**p in it but that doesn't mean there were roaches and feces on your food. Every location of any of these chains is different through management and staff. Also, a lot of these didn't even have anything to do with "chain" restaurants, just people citing personal experiences, opinions and unfortunate circumstances, some weren't even addressed by name. A lot that went against the actual concept and title of the article. Not the best, BP.
Mine are Perkins, Hard Rock Cafe and a local joint. My spouse and I sat for almost an hour in all three restaurants and weren't even greeted. Never again. And I avoid Chipotle. Their food is great but their management is so odious all the employees look pissed off every time I enter their establishments.
As someone living in the UK: Wetherspoons. Also, the food in wetherspoons is godawful and most likely came fresh from a microwave, and it's always full of chavs and day drinking alcoholics.
