Metal rusts and velour can be torn, so it's only a matter of time before your old Honda Civic breaks down. Of course, if you have money and you bought that car because you love the way it looks, you can probably just take it to the mechanic and let them fix it. However, if you're broke and that was the only reason why you got that pile of junk in the first place, you'll probably have to bring it back to life yourself.

But fear not, you'd be amazed to know how much is possible with so little. And the subreddit r/RedneckEngineering is the perfect example of that. It has plenty of funny, surprising, and creative DIY projects that simultaneously make sense and appear completely useless but can definitely inspire you to pick up a wrench and start working on that metal pony of yours.

If that is indeed a pic taken in Australia, there are currently 6000 spider babies living in that pool noodle. And possibly a venomous snake hiding under his seat.

When my colleague Liucija contacted the founder of r/RedneckEngineering, they told her that the term “redneck engineering" is still open for interpretation. However, the Redditor reassured that it's also “the kind of thing you know when you see.”

For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The members of the subreddit give “bonus points if it'd make an OSHA inspector cringe.”

Actually, it might. When I got rear-ended you could barely tell by looking at it, but the entire car was written off as the back end had lost structural integrity. A second collision, if it hit the right place, could have been fatal. So please, have your car looked at by a professional before applying any tricks like this.

I've heard that on metal parts, you can park the car in full sun, or use a blow dryer to get the metal hot, and put an ice cube on it to pull small dings. I don't know if it works, but worth a shot. You can also go online and buy dent pullers, of various qualities that work on metal and plastic. Yeah body shops are seriously expensive these days.

The biggest difference between now and the old days in 2013 when r/RedneckEngineering was created is growth. The founder said that he used to be responsible for most of the posts, but the community has become really self-sustaining over time.

When it comes to submissions, you’ll see all kinds of bizarre makeshift gadgets and very questionable workarounds. Most posts generally come from people finding “low-budget workarounds to everyday problems with a few high-effort engineering projects and other submissions sprinkled in.”

The pandemic might also have something to do with the subreddit's increasing popularity. According to a national survey by The Freedonia Group in December 2020, 39% of consumers reported undertaking home improvement projects because of changes associated with these trying times.

This is more common than you think but they shouldn't be using rustoleum. Bad for everything (propellants to the user, everything else in there for the rest of the world). There are multiple brands of paint specifically designed for this that go on the end of your hose and you just spray with that. Original one was invented by a gold course caretaker. If you're in a hurry, many DIY stores sell 1 gallon jugs with built in sprayer. They are water-soluble, not toxic, and biodegrade in 3-4 months.

Little bit crude engineering. The previous owner of my classic had fitted a driveshaft that articulated out of the way and would fasten round the shaft of the gearlever to lock it into first gear. It was quite neat and worked well. Unfortunately had to remove it when I changed the gearbox for a 5-speed and didn't line up any more.

I live in a mountain state and seeing this on the road would terrify me. Going up a decent hill would be bad enough but the slope going down would be deadly. Hit one pothole with that front wheel so the weight is no longer directly behind it and you are over the emergency rail.

Hah hah, I would totally expect to see a scene like this in the southern side of Tenerife. He's probably on his way to get a nice plate of fish and chips and a cerveza as those guachinches are just too darn exotic.

This is Philipp Mickenbecker, a young German Christian, who encouraged people to go out and live adventures instead of consuming media. He suffered cancer and died recently and was buried in a bathtub. He had a media channel ("the real life guys") which now is run by his twin brother. - He also made a last video before he died where he showed a grateful and relaxed attitude. I'm as sure as he was that he’s now in heaven with our father and Jesus on his side.

Can verify that it works, although using the fencepost horizontally instead of like a pole vault is sufficient - and make sure not to chain it to the hole that has the tire filler valve in it! :) Have used this method to get a Case 990 out of a mudhole that had it buried to the axles. Apparently I was ahead of my time (and my father taught it to me, after he'd used it as a younger person, so it goes back even further than I do!)

I'm surprised they don't make radios with one built in already. Also I've never understood why cars are made to go faster than the speed limit. If we truly didn't want people to speed because we know how dangerous it is. Why keep manufacturing cars that go over 80 miles an hour? It would no doubt cut down on speeding and accidents. Which is a good thing and quite frankly a really good idea. Not saying we can't have fast cars or anything. Just that our everyday vehicles should only go as fast as the highest speed limit in your area.

I just tucked the cloth under opposite edges of the cover. I did the same thing for the vent that was cooling my dinner before I could finish eating.

There are still a lot of small cablecars in use here. Mostly to connect alps with the valley below or similar mountain areas. A lot of them don't even have walls, just some rails for not falling out of the car.

The ramen is mixed with epoxy. Ramen makes it stronger than epoxy by itself since the noodles act as reinforcement (sort of like rebar in concrete). The noodles also provide filler and help the epoxy hold together while it's in the liquid state to make more of a paste. The epoxy being used is probably 2-part clear epoxy, like the kind you find in automotive stores.

That's not true, though. As Johnnie explains below, the extra voltage would drop the current. It was designed to run at a lower current, with certain resistances etc throughout the circuit. The higher current version works, and is brighter, but will wear out the LEDs faster if it doesn't catch the wires on fire first.

For all you guys who aren't EE's, when you drop voltage current goes up. That's why it got brighter. The bulb still required the same amount of power, but current determines brightness.

It requires three batteries. They didn't have three so bridged the gap with aluminum foil. Electrically diagramed out, the 'math' works, although it won't power as long as intended.

As jamie's video also shows, it's half-automatic. Humans open it, but the tape measure pulls it closed behind them. I assume it's less about reducing labour and more about ensuring the door stays closed for heating, safety reasons, or something like that.

Yup, and they also know who 's responsible for the phenomenon - two Brits named Doug Bower and Dave Chorley came clean in 1991 as having started it in the 1960s to poke fun at the UFO nuts that started appearing around Wiltshire. And the kicker? the same UFO nuts then absolutely refused to believe them, even after they showed on camera how a crop circle is made, with only a plank of wood, a stake and some rope.

That’s a dredge bucket. This is certainly a safe way to keep your floor from heating up when your wood stove is hot. Maybe a little overkill, but a nice conversation piece.

I once had to call the management of the apartment complex across from my Mom's house, to tell them the balconies were falling off the building. They didn't believe me, so they sent the guys in the golf cart, who went high-tailing back as fast as their golf cart could go. The complex was built in the 1970s when cheap Florida construction was the thing. By the next day, 4 out of 12 buildings were already roped off. This was just from the weight of the balcony. I can't imagine what 10000 lbs of water would do to them.

People legit put bubble wrap on windows here to create an air gap and prevent heat loss in the winter. If OP doesn't need regular access to the upstairs, clever solution. I actually use a vinyl curtain that is slit with magnets in the middle for my front door in the winter. 30 year old metal door without insulation. Works wonders!

That's called a "swamp cooler." It relies far more on the absorption of heat energy when water evaporates than on the coolness of the ice. (in fact, the ice might make it LESS effective, ESPECIALLY if the freezer which makes the ice is running in the same environment.) VERY effective in drier climates.

I mean.. it'll work. It'll take a fairly long while TO work, since it doesn't have anything actively moving the water through the radiator, so has to rely solely on convection currents to do the job. And I can't imagine the electricity or gas bill - depending on what the house boiler uses - is going to be fun to pay by the end. But it'll work all the same.

If you are smart, you connect it up to the house air conditioner. In the summer, you are now using electricity twice - once to cool your house and then taking the hot air given off by the AC to heat your pool.

    David Struve

Not really? It's not an electric heater so those pipes will more than likely be carrying just hot water through them. So at worse if there's a leak it'll just mean direct heating of the pool water by the hot water leaking out - and the pool level raising - until you get it all switched off. Then again, that water WILL be at a hot enough temperature to easily burn anyone it splashes on ... and burns CAN and DO kill .... so there is that. So maybe, yes really, after all?

Its not there to keep someone out, its there to keep the driver in. I bet the door won't shut so this is the solution. Slide it to the left, get in, roll down the window and slide it back to the right. The multiple holes above and below the board shows the first bracket was either popped off while driving or just moved over because it wasn't working.
