50 Times People Had Such Wild Solutions To Their Problems, They Were Celebrated In The ‘Redneck Engineers’ Group (New Pics)
Metal rusts and velour can be torn, so it's only a matter of time before your old Honda Civic breaks down. Of course, if you have money and you bought that car because you love the way it looks, you can probably just take it to the mechanic and let them fix it. However, if you're broke and that was the only reason why you got that pile of junk in the first place, you'll probably have to bring it back to life yourself.
But fear not, you'd be amazed to know how much is possible with so little. And the subreddit r/RedneckEngineering is the perfect example of that. It has plenty of funny, surprising, and creative DIY projects that simultaneously make sense and appear completely useless but can definitely inspire you to pick up a wrench and start working on that metal pony of yours.

Cut A Pool Noodle In Half To Make A Comfortable Armrest For The Truck. From Australia
He drives for a living, he JUST MIGHT have worked this out ;)
Load More Replies...These pool noodles are great for many many other uses, and very cheap
Yeah, you can even use them to insulate pipes. /s
Load More Replies...If that is indeed a pic taken in Australia, there are currently 6000 spider babies living in that pool noodle. And possibly a venomous snake hiding under his seat.
Was gonna say: Step 2: put industrial-grade sunblock on that arm.
Load More Replies...My father would say: Yeah, get comfy and f**k about safety, Trucks are made to be driven with only one hand.
Pool noodles? The UK uses them to lag water pipes, different uses for different climates.
Oh right. It seems I got it wrong by eating noodles in a pool. No wonder I've been banned from 17 swimming pools.

When my colleague Liucija contacted the founder of r/RedneckEngineering, they told her that the term “redneck engineering" is still open for interpretation. However, the Redditor reassured that it's also “the kind of thing you know when you see.”
For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The members of the subreddit give “bonus points if it'd make an OSHA inspector cringe.”
Not The Prettiest, But It Gets The Job Done!
I love this so much. And if too tired to make it all the way across in one go - have a seat - rest a while - then carry on. It's perfect.
A Plunger And Hot Water, Who’d A Thunk It
Actually, it might. When I got rear-ended you could barely tell by looking at it, but the entire car was written off as the back end had lost structural integrity. A second collision, if it hit the right place, could have been fatal. So please, have your car looked at by a professional before applying any tricks like this.
Load More Replies...Can you imagine how much money these body shops charge when they probably spend the same amount of time and effort in similar situations? This is genius, btw.
I've heard that on metal parts, you can park the car in full sun, or use a blow dryer to get the metal hot, and put an ice cube on it to pull small dings. I don't know if it works, but worth a shot. You can also go online and buy dent pullers, of various qualities that work on metal and plastic. Yeah body shops are seriously expensive these days.
This is common knowledge and not any type of strange engineering. I did this over 30 years ago when someone kicked a dent in my car door. Plunged it right out.
I wouldn’t call this common knowledge. We got people out here that struggle checking their tire pressure or even putting gas in.

Not going to judge another guys car, but with the modifications, it has to be frightening at any speed over 20 mph.
The biggest difference between now and the old days in 2013 when r/RedneckEngineering was created is growth. The founder said that he used to be responsible for most of the posts, but the community has become really self-sustaining over time.
When it comes to submissions, you’ll see all kinds of bizarre makeshift gadgets and very questionable workarounds. Most posts generally come from people finding “low-budget workarounds to everyday problems with a few high-effort engineering projects and other submissions sprinkled in.”
The pandemic might also have something to do with the subreddit's increasing popularity. According to a national survey by The Freedonia Group in December 2020, 39% of consumers reported undertaking home improvement projects because of changes associated with these trying times.

The Birdhouse Booby Trap Device
I kinda feel sorry for the cat, that platform is only there just to trigger the trap, without the platform, the cat wouldn't be able to reach the birdhouse anyway, so tbh, this is kind of just being an asshole to the cat. :/
Yeah I agree. Someone doesn't like cats. The bastard.

If you're in a hurry, many DIY stores sell 1 gallon jugs with built in sprayer. They are water-soluble, not toxic, and biodegrade in 3-4 months.
Found In A Group Called “Stairs Designed By People Who Aren’t Afraid To Die” But I Still Quite Like How Simple And Cheap A Solution It Is
i think it would work great as is if the pallets are properly screwed into the wall and each other which i do think they are then that means everything should be supporting it self properly

Load More Replies...Little bit crude engineering. The previous owner of my classic had fitted a driveshaft that articulated out of the way and would fasten round the shaft of the gearlever to lock it into first gear. It was quite neat and worked well. Unfortunately had to remove it when I changed the gearbox for a 5-speed and didn't line up any more.

Found This On An Old Project File, I Was Ahead Of My Time
I have some kitchen drawers that need handles and this would guarantee straight horizontal yes
This Was Very Smart
Using tree limbs chained to the wheels to free a stuck tractor.
Can verify that it works, although using the fencepost horizontally instead of like a pole vault is sufficient - and make sure not to chain it to the hole that has the tire filler valve in it! :) Have used this method to get a Case 990 out of a mudhole that had it buried to the axles. Apparently I was ahead of my time (and my father taught it to me, after he'd used it as a younger person, so it goes back even further than I do!)

I'm surprised they don't make radios with one built in already. Also I've never understood why cars are made to go faster than the speed limit. If we truly didn't want people to speed because we know how dangerous it is. Why keep manufacturing cars that go over 80 miles an hour? It would no doubt cut down on speeding and accidents. Which is a good thing and quite frankly a really good idea. Not saying we can't have fast cars or anything. Just that our everyday vehicles should only go as fast as the highest speed limit in your area.
Holy cow… didn’t you see what a ruckus simply wearing a mask caused?! People would go absolutely insane if you limited their speed.

Oculus 2 Weight Balance Fix
Kinda dumb that the makers of this device (and other makers of devices like these) didn't even bother to solve this issue themselves to begin with. Unless they intend for your neck/head to get sore after a while to purposely limit how much time you use the device for??

My Dumbass Solution To The Problem Of High-Hanging Fruit
I think a lot of Indian homes in the countryside use something similar lol
Yupp absolutely, have been a bamboo stick tied to the edge to form a hook to grab high hanging fruits.
Load More Replies...10 years ago my Brazilian girlfriend taught me how to make something similar with a long stick and the top half of a plastic bottle which edges are cut in a V shape. It's a common homemade tool there, because big trees with edible fruit are everywhere and at every moment of the year. I still have it now.
This summer I learned that those grabbers that short people can use to get things off high shelves work really well to get ripe peaches off the high branches of a tree!

Ramen Fix
The ramen is mixed with epoxy. Ramen makes it stronger than epoxy by itself since the noodles act as reinforcement (sort of like rebar in concrete). The noodles also provide filler and help the epoxy hold together while it's in the liquid state to make more of a paste. The epoxy being used is probably 2-part clear epoxy, like the kind you find in automotive stores.

not really, ramen and epoxy, prime with cement and paint with outdoor paint. It's not a permanent fix but it'll last a while
Load More Replies...Only Had Two Batteries, And Also This Thing Was Crazy Bright
The messed up part is that it has a three battery compartment if it never needed that much power to begin with.
That's not true, though. As Johnnie explains below, the extra voltage would drop the current. It was designed to run at a lower current, with certain resistances etc throughout the circuit. The higher current version works, and is brighter, but will wear out the LEDs faster if it doesn't catch the wires on fire first.
Load More Replies...For all you guys who aren't EE's, when you drop voltage current goes up. That's why it got brighter. The bulb still required the same amount of power, but current determines brightness.
I used to do this with my game controller. And one time I lost the piece that would keep the batteries in so I just wrapped a paperclip round the nipple, taped it onto the flat sides and taped it into the back.
I have done this a few times. Also with D and DD batteries, add a bit of aluminum foil and presto, flashlight works.
It requires three batteries. They didn't have three so bridged the gap with aluminum foil. Electrically diagramed out, the 'math' works, although it won't power as long as intended.

Yup, and they also know who 's responsible for the phenomenon - two Brits named Doug Bower and Dave Chorley came clean in 1991 as having started it in the 1960s to poke fun at the UFO nuts that started appearing around Wiltshire. I think it would throw me off... lots of touch typists out there, and I don't think I'm the only one who would be put off by the different feel of the key. I was upset when so many keyboards started to be made without dots on the home keys... and keyboards are what, like 14 bucks? I do applaud the reduce/reuse/repair ethic of this.

Well, there are professional versions of this available, so it's not such a crazy idea.

$400 rent for a set of tools that cost $60 each sounds like they really didn't want to do business.
The kind with the hooks that clamp onto the sides of the springs don't work for short, or small-diameter springs.

In the United States most auto part stores you and rent/ buy them. Basically you pay for them and if you return them you get your money back.

It's called the trap and is meant to help catch items that fall into the drain as well as keep noxious gas from coming out of the drain.
It's also called a U-pipe, but thanks for the mehxplanation.

Houma La, After Hurricane Ida
Would be highly illegal in most countries in the world because the cabin is an integral part of the construction. That's why it's not allowed to remove the roof of a car and call it a convertible.
This was after a hurricane. There was no structural integrity left so they made a quiche from the broken eggs. Sure it will spoil in a couple days but it'll keep you alive until you get more.

I once had to call the management of the apartment complex across from my Mom's house, to tell them the balconies were falling off the building. They didn't believe me, so they sent the guys in the golf cart, who went high-tailing back as fast as their golf cart could go. The complex was built in the 1970s when cheap Florida construction was the thing. By the next day, 4 out of 12 buildings were already roped off. This was just from the weight of the balcony. I can't imagine what 10000 lbs of water would do to them.

Pretty close to what bubble wrap was originally invented for (insulated wall paper).
Seems more like some kind of prank to run into. Kind of cool actually, bubble wrap is awesome
Thought This Belonged Here
That's called a "swamp cooler." It relies far more on the absorption of heat energy when water evaporates than on the coolness of the ice. (in fact, the ice might make it LESS effective, ESPECIALLY if the freezer which makes the ice is running in the same environment.) VERY effective in drier climates.

Load More Replies...Newest Swimming Pool Heating Technology
I mean.. it'll work. It'll take a fairly long while TO work, since it doesn't have anything actively moving the water through the radiator, so has to rely solely on convection currents to do the job. And I can't imagine the electricity or gas bill - depending on what the house boiler uses - is going to be fun to pay by the end. But it'll work all the same.
If you are smart, you connect it up to the house air conditioner. In the summer, you are now using electricity twice - once to cool your house and then taking the hot air given off by the AC to heat your pool.
Load More Replies...Not really? It's not an electric heater so those pipes will more than likely be carrying just hot water through them. So at worse if there's a leak it'll just mean direct heating of the pool water by the hot water leaking out - and the pool level raising - until you get it all switched off. Then again, that water WILL be at a hot enough temperature to easily burn anyone it splashes on ... and burns CAN and DO kill .... so there is that. So maybe, yes really, after all?

Theft Protection
I bet it keeps that door closed tho ! I’ve needed this fix before.
Load More Replies...Its not there to keep someone out, its there to keep the driver in. I bet the door won't shut so this is the solution. Slide it to the left, get in, roll down the window and slide it back to the right. The multiple holes above and below the board shows the first bracket was either popped off while driving or just moved over because it wasn't working.
I think this is just to hold the door in place, rather than stop theft.
Looks more like it's meant to keep the door closed, not prevent theft.
Just slide out. I just think it’s to keep a faulty door shut or for child safety so they can’t open the door from the inside

This is an accident waiting to happen. If the wheel nut is on that tight, you are likely to break a stud rather than remove it. Also the wrench is likely to be coming through the windscreen of the car the rope is attached to.
The ratchet mechanism will strip out long before they build up that much force.
Load More Replies...Holy crap! If you're just trying to loosen it, it's not at the right angle, and you would have to be so damn careful with the brake in the second vehicle to not go too far back at once! I'm not very mechanical, but isn't this likely to turn the wrench into a deadly projectile, and turn the hook on the end of the strap into a weapon?

Load More Replies...Great!, why spend money on a fuse when you can set your car on fire for free!
It's a 20 Amp fuse. If that blows you've got a serious electrical problem in your car. This "solution" will likely set the car on fire because of overheating wiring or components.
Holy moly that's a 20 Amp fuse?! I had no idea vehicles had fuses that big! Sheesh the ones that come in our plugs for MAINS POWER (240 volts) here in the UK are only 13 Amps!! :O
