‘Reasons My Friends Hate Me’: 25 Comics About Self-Deprecating Humor By Aylia Colwell

To learn more, Bored Panda once again reached out to Aylia, who shared more about her background.“My background is in theater and creative writing. Storytelling has always been what I’m most passionate about. Not only telling stories but “consuming” them, too, for lack of a better word.”

We were wondering what has changed since the last post.

Aylia wrote: “I’m slowly working on putting together a Reasons My Friends Hate Me book, but lately, my time has been preoccupied with writing non-illustrated novels. My first two books are out and available to purchase on Amazon, and the third will hopefully be published in 2025.”

Aylia also shared what her typical day looks like when she’s working on a new comic.

“When I’m working on a new comic, I’ll usually put on an episode of a show I’ve seen many times and work on the comic while the TV is providing comforting background noise. Ah, the dulcet tones of Nick Miller. Depending on the content of the comic and how complicated/intricate it is, it will take anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete.”

From bad to genius ideas, all artists get to experience both and all in between. We asked if Aylia had ever scrapped an idea for her comic.

The artist responded: “I don’t officially 'scrap' an idea if it turns out I don’t like it… I just let it sit, incomplete, in the ether, with the idea that one day maybe I’ll complete it.”

Regarding the feedback, Aylia commented on the response from the readers.

“I think artists never really have a clear idea that their art is being received in a positive light, or if it’s being received at all. But I recently followed a newer account of a beginner who responded with a message thanking me for the follow and saying they were 'starstruck.' By me?? To all the artists out there, keep making art because you never know who’s seeing it and what it means to them.”
