The famous basketball coach Frank Layden is usually credited with the phrase 'you can't teach height,' which perfectly encapsulates the very concept of a so-called 'genetic win.' Indeed, there are countless things in the world that can be learned - but there are also things that we’re simply born with.

Some of us have a phenomenal memory, some can drink lots of booze without getting drunk, and some at the molecular level exude a smell that repels mosquitoes. Finally, some consider their peculiarity a disadvantage, while for others it’s an absolute 'genetic win.' So now please enjoy this selection of self-proclaimed ‘genetic wins’ from various folks in this online thread!

...like in those ads where the blood is light blue and the women enjoy a day at the public pool, participate in some track and field championships, as well as trampoline jumping all day long? 🤔

I think I’ve written this before, but I was once slapped by a lady who had really bad debilitating cramps every month. I was asked about my period pains, and I said that I don’t have any. This lady was so frustrated she slapped me (and then immediately apologized), and I sort of understand.

Just you wait. I was just like you until I hit perimenopause in my mid-forties. Then I bled like a stuck pig for 5 days every month (bleeding through both an extra large tampon plus an extra large pad worn with it as backup every couple hours), and ending up having to take at least one day in bed every month until my periods stopped completely, which was a relief (definitely do not miss it). Mother Nature can seem kind sometimes, and I thought she was kind to me when it came to horrible periods, especially in comparison with some of the other girls in junior high and high school. At least until that TWO YEAR period of torture.

I was told I had low Fe and a great unexpected side-effect of taking an iron supplement has been that my periods are much less painful. Wish I’d known sooner as i’m nearly 46!

I’m happy that this is what that person experiences and I hope a lot more women have it the same way. There is always one day a month where I can’t go to work. I’m immobile from the sheer pain of it all. Then the next day I’m fine. But there’s always one super unbearable day where I think I’m dying.

The genome of each of us is absolutely unique (unless you have a twin sibling), and each of us has physical or mental characteristics that do make us special. The only question is how much these “superpowers” stand out against the general background of our lives, and how much they make our lives easier. We can agree, it would be weird, for example, to have excellent night vision - but at the same time go to bed at sunset and wake up at dawn all your life!

Actually people with type O- can safely receive O+ blood as long as they have not been exposed to Rh+ blood previously and so have not developed the antibody for Rh+ blood or they are a premenopausal biological female. Premenopausal females aren't given Rh+ blood because the development of Anti-D (the antibody to Rh+ blood) would put future pregnancies with Rh+ embryos at significant risk that could only be maintained with intrauterine transfusions. Rhogam has made it possible to prevent the development of Anti-D during pregnancy for many O- women. Unfortunately, one dose of Rhogam only covers the receipt of about 30mL of Rh+ blood in case of a fetal-maternal bleed so would be impractical after giving multiple pints of blood. It was quite common where I worked however that in emergencies a male trauma patient would be given O+ blood if there was not time to type and screen them because O- blood is always in short supply. I'm retired now but thanks for the chance to reminisce.

My dad was like this. He managed to donate 49 pints - just one shy of his Gold award! Then he was diagnosed with severe Graves' disease and due to his treatment had to stop. After a few years he was able to resume donating here and there and has his award - I'm so proud of him. I've had my life saved by transfusions and cannot ever donate myself which is a bit gutting, but I'm super-thankful to everybody who does.

So I used to sweat almost constantly and anti-perspirants were not effective at all. Deodorant made the sweat smell less offensive but I was always very self-conscious about it. Since I've been taking medication for PCOS I sweat very little and when I do it's basically odourless. It's honestly made such a huge difference to my life. So if there is a woman in your life who has issues with excessive sweating and perhaps other symptoms of PCOS, let them know that there are now options available through their GP to manage the symptoms and, possibly, reverse the issue of PCOS altogether.

I have a fun fact about this one! Apparently, the vast majority of Koreans don't have body odor - or at least underarm odor - because of genetic mutations. Something like only 0.006% of the Korean population has the ABCC11 gene, which is the mother-flipper responsible for underarm odor.

Same with me. Drives my sister nuts that I can breeze through without even studying while she had to pound the books all day. The blessing of the eidetic memory. Seriously, I appalled my teachers. Once, my history teacher thought he'd convinced me to study for a test. When he gave it back with a great big smile and an A+, he was all 'see what happens when you study?' I just took the test back and said, 'I didn't study, I read the summary at the end of the chapter before the test.' I watched the smile slide off his face and something in his eyes died that day.

I have a very good memory for all the wrong things. Names, important dates, my schedule - no f*****g use at all. A wall of text from a book I read fifteen years ago? The entire opening spiel from Count Duckula? Safely secured and accessible at the drop of a hat.

Same here. When I was you her I could remember absolutely everything. But now, if someone tells me a whole bunch of things they want me to do for them, they better also be giving me a handwritten list of those same things, because I promise I won’t remember them all. However, Alzheimer’s does not run in my family at all, so I chalk it up to a combination of age and being overloaded with everyone else’s damned nitpicky details all the time. Maybe if I start ramping it up and pretend like I’m “forgetting” even more of their stuff, they’ll all start keeping track of their own s**t for a change. None of them are children, btw, so it’s not an unreasonable expectation.

By the way, we often “pay” for having any specific innate skills or abilities with the absence of other talents. We don’t need to go far to find an example - let's take me. I have a really excellent text memory - I remember large amounts of information without any problems, I remember facts I heard once a long time ago - but at the same time I have a terrible memory for faces.

In the old days, it was believed that to acquire special abilities, a person, voluntarily or not, “pays” with otherworldly forces - which is why many sorcerers or shamans in fairy tales or legends may not have a limb or grow old sharply after acquiring magical abilities. For example, the Scandinavian god Odin, as we know, gave his own eye in return for wisdom.

I feel rested with 4 hours of sleep, even less, and don't feel tired during the day, working as usual, but I notice that my ability to retain new info is not the same. I practice Krav Maga, and learning/exercise new moves with 4-6 hours of sleep is much more difficult than with 8 hours.

On the other hand, if you don’t have anything like that, don’t be upset either. Just think about it - the absence of any unpleasant features is already an advantage of sorts. For example, I already wrote that my wife and I both love cats very much, with one significant difference - my wife is allergic to them, and I am not. However, every time I see a cute kitty, I also have to make a difficult but predetermined choice... Well, okay, that wasn’t a successful example!

35 People Who Won The Gene Lottery Share The Traits They Are Happy To Have I have highly concentrated taste buds. So I'm classified as a "super" taster. And can discern flavors in just about everything I eat. Same with smells. Probably the reason people say I'm such a good cook. Only 25% of people in the world are super tasters. But I think that's pretty cool.

The downside of being a supertaster is that there are many foods that I just cannot abide. Anything bitter, basically, so a lot of veg are borderline, some fruits (e.g. grapefruit) and a lot of drinks. Oh, and goat's cheese, although that's not bitter and may be unrelated to the supertaster thing, idk.

I'm a super smeller. My sense of smell is very acute. I cook by smelling when the food is done. I of course use a time, but I can usually tell when something is done like 30secs before the timer goes off w/o fail. It's also a curse as well. Any bad smells I'll pick up very quickly and those around me think I'm crazy until the smell finally hits them minutes later.

Everyone is allergic to something. They just have to encounter it to find out. I used to think I had no allergies too. But I had an allergic reaction to a titanium support put in my foot after tendon surgery. Had to go back and have it removed. Luckily, it wasn’t vital to my recovery. But, had I not torn that tendon, and needed it replaced with a piece of tendon from my foot, I would never have known. Then once menopause hit, I found myself with a major sensitivity to wheat/gluten on top of everything else. Never had it before, in all of my many decades happily eating pasta, bread, and other delicious foods containing wheat. It’s like we get older and our bodies find new ways to betray us.

35 People Who Won The Gene Lottery Share The Traits They Are Happy To Have Literally got the results back today from a fertility panel that screens for almost 500 disorders and gene mutations and I carry NONE OF THEM. Doc said it’s super rare to not carry even a few recessive issues. Pretty neat! Got to tell my parents they made a near perfect human ;) Edit to add for everyone: it’s a panel from Natera. You ask your OB or a Genetic Counselor (or geneticist) to order it. Some insurances cover it. Others don’t. I think we’ll end up paying $300 per person for ours. It’s a blood draw and it gets sent to their lab in CA. Edit 2: please stop telling me to procreate. That’s why we got the testing done. And stop telling me to be an egg donor. Not something that I’m remotely interested in.

People should ALWAYS do genetic screening with a private company. You CANNOT trust your medical insurance, ever. Especially if the GOP comes to power, they will allow insurance companies to consider pre-existing conditions, and that would include anything for which you have a genetic predisposition.

I sound like an egotistical a$$ when I say it, but my lashes are naturally so long and thick that I've regularly been accused of wearing mascara when I wasn't. Even had an aesthetician try to wipe it off and was shocked when it turned out I was not, in fact, wearing any. Just genetics; I did nothing to earn it. But my babies sure do have beautiful long lashes. :)

35 People Who Won The Gene Lottery Share The Traits They Are Happy To Have Both my mother and grandmother had breast and uterine cancer (which they recovered from, thankfully). Due to my family history my primary care provider tested me for the breast cancer genes, and I don't have them! Woohoo! [Edit: thank you all for your concern. I still get screened. My mother tested positive for the genes and I did not. I know there are other types of breast/uterine cancers and my risk is not zero. I am just happy I have a lower risk of that particular family curse.].

Genetic markers is what they are looking for. If you are positive you are encouraged to have yearly screenings to catch potential cancer cells while they are in an early stage. There is currently no cure for cancer, and no preventative medicine to ensure you don't get it.

I chalk up the flu to just being in a foreign country exposed to something we rarely see in the US, hence zero immunity.

I have never had a nose bleed before, but I used to suffer from severe, debilitating migraines since about 12/13 years old. I fortunately don't suffer from migraines as severe or as often anymore and hopefully it stays like that or better yet, nonexistent.

I'm living proof that 90% of your weight is your diet, because I'm fairly active (I can't run, but I walk and bike), and still weight 260 lbs because I have no sense of portion control.

I wouldn't call this a good thing. Even if you don't get fat, your health will suck. Your immune system will suck and you'll probably have a lot of health issues other than obesity. And if you're a guy it makes it way harder to put on any muscle or get stronger. So this can be both a blessing and a curse

Tonsil problems are *generally* a childhood-to-adolescence thing. Like a lot of things in the human body, if they're OK for the first fifteen to eighteen years, they're probably going to fine until you're old.

I’m decently healthy both physically and mentally. Granted I’m only 40 so I’ve got some years ahead of me so that will probably change, but right now I feel like I’m in the minority among friends and close coworkers that I am not on prescription meds for anything.
