Today, Britain woke up to its first day in more than 70 years without Queen Elizabeth II at its helm, as people around the country and the world mourn the passing of the monarch.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the globe for Elizabeth, who died at age 96 after the longest reign in British history, a period during which she oversaw the last throes of the empire, endured global upheaval and domestic scandals, welcomed 15 prime ministers, and dramatically modernized the monarchy.

We at Bored Panda would also like to pay our respects to the great leader, so we put together a list of moments that we believe perfectly capture Elizabeth's vibrant personality and unshakable confidence. Continue scrolling and check them out.

Inaccurate headline. Honestly, this really was an incident that had them BOTH laughing because a bee swarm derailed the event. The Queen knew Philip was going to be dressed like that, there was no sudden realisation of who it was. He had the right to wear the uniform and it wasn't a prank.

Dudes, it doesn't matter if they were laughing about bees or her husband... the point is how many couples do you know that have been together for years, let alone nearly 70+ years, that still get that cute grin that clearly has joy, friendship, and love in it like they do/did.

She was laughing at bees, a swarm had disrupted the ceremony. She knew Philip would be there as he accompanied her in full uniform.

HM always had a subtle way of voicing her opinions although constitutionally not allowed to do so. A brooch, a wild driving through her Balmoral estate, the slightest trait of humour...As well said by President Macron : She was your queen (brit friends) but for us she was THE queen. I second that wholeheartedly.

Truss called for the country to rally around the new King, saying he deserves "our loyalty and devotion" as he takes Britain forward into a "new Carolean age."

That's not the complete story. The actions of the royals today prove that. When there are duties to be performed, the children can be comforted by someone else. The reality is that there was simply no protocol for the death of a divorced member of the royal family. She did not think she should be involved. The expectation of the public changed her mind and she made changes to her openness and the actions of the monarchy after that. But no she did not choose to be a grandmother first, queen second, and she never would. Her duties always came first.

I remember the outcry and I didn't understand it, at the time. I just figured she, along with Prince Phillip and Prince Charles, would stay isolated with the Princes for a few days, at least. I was so glad to hear her say this - it showed her humanity and her love for her family. After that,, how could anyone criticize her in good conscience?

I loved Queen Elizabeth (American here) but I seriously doubt the woman made scones for William and Harry. She never struck me as the "grandmotherly" type. She always had a chef who made everything - I doubt she even had a recipe for scones. The woman even had a person who broke in her shoes!

I've seen the officer telling this story, it's so funny, the tourists then asked the Queen to take photos of them with the security officer because he "must be a celebrity if he's met the Queen" 😆 They did take photos with her as well and when they left she said she would like to be there when they show the photos to their friends and someone recognised her! As the UK goes into mourning, the coming hours and days will see an itinerary of events to honor the life of Elizabeth and guide the nation forward.

But her passing leaves a void for the UK at a time of steep challenges, amid a change in political leadership and an impending economic recession.

Though Britons rarely looked to the monarchy for political leadership, the late Queen was a steady presence highly esteemed by many throughout decades of significant change that saw the country transform from a war-weary declining imperial power into a modern multi-cultural state.

Allegedly, after signing she exclaimed "well, who’d have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, I’d be signing something like this? Isn’t it wonderful?" 'The Queen could (and now King Charles the Third can) refuse to give consent for a law to be passed, in her reign she never refused a law that would benefit the country and always remained neutral in any party politics. Every new law has to go to the Monarch to be written into British Law, as was demonstrated today during King Charles' Assention council when he approved of both the date of the Queen's funeral and the decision to make it a Bank Holiday, he could have refused the later and it would just have been a normal day for the rest of us with the Government having no way of passing it themselves. The UK law system is designed to give the reigning Monarch final say in all laws and has been ever since Oliver Cromwell was removed from his dictatorship and the Monarchy restored, they lost the power of just making laws themselves, but the Government still needs the Monarch's permission for any new laws.

Though my birthday is the same day (though 6 years later) than the Timișoara massacre and the beginning of the Romanian revolution (17th December, 1989, I was born in 1995) he and his equally as awful wife were executed by being shot on December 25th after the military, which had also defected, captured them when they tried to escape. That's what always amazed me! Like, sure, she wasn't supposed to be queen, just like her father wasn't supposed to become king but still she was super high rank royalty, very young and also a woman, in a time where women of a certain rank were considered pretty much above any kind of labour. And yet she was put in a quite dangerous position, certainly not conveniently allocated in an office as a secretary or something... I wonder if she was somehow "forced" to do that, you know, to be as an example for the masses, or if it was an entirely her decision and maybe she even had to put her foot down with her family...

I have understood it was her wish to be as hands on as possible. Her parents and Mr Churchill wouldn't let her leave England, and she showed an aptitude for mechanical work,, so she joined the ATS.

She was no doubt a very responsible breeder though. I don't support irresponsible breeding, pet shops or modifying a breed to the point that the animal has any distress whatsoever, but it would be awfully sad to have no more golden retrievers, corgis, or any of the other wonderful breeds of dogs out there, which we'd lose if there was no more breeding. IIRC, dogs generally would come to resemble dingo types if there were no more intentional breeding. Nothing wrong with dingos or dogs that resemble them, as all dogs are wonderful, but it would be sad to never see a breed again. Some of course still work as well and are bred to be suited to and to love what they do.

That was very touching and I think it meant so much to anyone here, in the states, who saw it. It was a very kind and heart felt demonstration from our "cousins", which was made even more special simply because it was initiated by the Queen. She will always hold a special place in a lot of American hearts for that one simple gesture.

I wonder why no one has made a movie or tv show portraying her, as well as her family's lives throughout the war. We've all seen news footage from then, but a good drama about this would be very interesting.

She was wearing her ATS uniform and wanted to pull her cap down over her face to avoid recognition. Her security officer pointed out that she would then be wearing her uniform incorrectly, so she wore her cap at the correct angle, and was spotted by lots of people!

According to a Buckingham Palace statement issued Friday, the King has asked for a period of Royal Mourning to be observed from Friday until seven days after the Queen's funeral.

Royal Mourning is observed by "members of the royal family, royal household staff and representatives of the royal household on official duties, together with troops committed to ceremonial duties," it said.

It's a joke - the Holy Hand Grenade is from the Python Film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' (thanks to those pointing out my error - bit of a brain fog going on and I muddled it with seeing Spamalot a few years ago in London!). The hand grenade is a parody of the Globus Cruciger, a Christian symbol of authority often used in the regalia of monarchs. For example, the Sovereign's Orb, a component of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom, is a Globus Cruciger.

The Queen Kept It Together During An Assassination Attempt

The Queen Kept It Together During An Assassination Attempt

on June 13th 1981, as Queen Elizabeth rode her horse through streets, six shots suddenly rang out, seemingly aimed at the Queen. Her horse panicked, and began to take off, but she quickly calmed him, kept her cool and continued on her slow journey through the streets as if nothing had happened. The shots turned out to be blanks.

It was more a case of refusing to comply. She refused to leave the car. Her husband was holding on to her for dear life, there was a bit of a tug of war. However, all foiled due to Ronald Russell punching the gunman/kidnapper on the back of the head. He'd already shot a few people - including Anne's bodyguard.

When She Asked What Name She Would Like, She Replied: “My Own Of Course — What Else?”

When She Asked What Name She Would Like, She Replied: “My Own Of Course — What Else?”

There is a tradition in taking a new name when one ascends to the throne. On February 2, 1952, Elizabeth ascended the throne at the age of 25. She kept her own name, Elizabeth, as her regnal title. She was asked by her Private Secretary what her regnal name would be, to which she responded, "My own, of course—what else?"

She Married Against Her Family's Wishes

She Married Against Her Family's Wishes

The Queen crushed on Prince William when she was a teenager. Her family wasn't excited, Philip was not as wealthy as a foreign born prince and was considered not good enough. When the prince initially asked Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI, for her hand in marriage, the king told him no. They became engaged in July 1947 and she married him anyway.

What a messed up description. He was Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and indeed was not a wealthy royal, however he was taken under the wing of his maternal uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten, a 2nd cousin to King George VI Queen Elizabeth's father. He changed his name to Philip Mountbatten after becoming a naturalised citizen relinquishing his Royal title of Prince of Greece. King George did not say no, he did agree to the engagement but he did say that any formal engagement had to wait until the then Princess Elizabeth had turned 21. So how about some fact checking here BP. William is her Grandson

So many mistakes here! Prince Philip, not Prince William of course, and whilst not rich, he was literally "as wealthy as a foreign-born prince" ... because he WAS a foreign-born Prince! Prince Philip of Greece, born in Greece. I won't even start on the linguistic errors.

My great-grandma was one of those children and she very much was a comfort according to her. It was nice to know that "the royals weren't bolting," and standing with their people in the face of danger.

I suspect that she would have fired Margaret Thatcher if she could. She made no attempt to conceal her distaste for Thatcher's policies, something that a British monarch is not supposed to do. She did eventually put Thatcher in the House of Lords, but that guaranteed that Thatcher could not be prime minister again.

Under a Constitutional Monarchy the Queen’s/king’s position is largely symbolic. She/he provides the Royal Ascent to parliamentary laws, and acts only at the requests of Governors General. It is disturbing to see Aleta down voted by people who clearly don’t know anything about countries which have a Monarch as their head of state.

Queen Elizabeth II Didn't Need A British Passport To Travel Abroad

Queen Elizabeth II Didn't Need A British Passport To Travel Abroad

Explanation from the official website of the British monarchy: "When travelling overseas, The Queen does not require a British passport. The cover of a British passport features the Royal Arms, and the first page contains another representation of the Arms, together with the following wording:
'Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.'
As a British passport is issued in the name of Her Majesty, it is unnecessary for The Queen to possess one. All other members of the Royal Family, including The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales, have passports."

Our Canadian passports say "the queen" in them. I have to renew mine next year in preparation for a trip to the UK. Mine will be the first passport in my family to say "king" on it since my grandfather's back in 1950 (if they said king on them back then. I never did actually see it).

That’s a funny and well known trivia but so misleading. Who actually believe that Biden, Macron, Putin, or any other (major) head of state have to possess a valid passport and have to go through immigration when traveling abroad? That’s just not the way official (or even unofficial) trips of head of states happen.

The Royal Family's Last Name Was Disputed When Queen Elizabeth II Became The Reigning Monarch

The Royal Family's Last Name Was Disputed When Queen Elizabeth II Became The Reigning Monarch

When she married Prince Philip in 1947, she chose to keep her own house's name rather (Windsor) rather than taking on her husband's which was Mountbatten. Prince Filip wasn't too happy, especially when the Queen's mother and Winston Churchill also insisted on keeping the house of Windsor's name. Eventually, Elizabeth and Philip compromised on Mountbatten-Windsor in 1960. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry used the last name for their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

What I find interesting is that the Greek royal family (As an offshoot of the Danish royal family following and Danish tradition) did not actually use surnames, and there are anecdotes about Philip when he was younger simply signing his name "Philip". Mountbatten is his mothers family name, (and the name of his which he adopted at the age of 26, after renouncing his Greek and Danish Titles. He was under the legal guardianship of the Mountbatten family from about the age of 9 though. Always, seemed so odd that he was so determined his kids have his name when he didn't even get it until right before he was married.

BP is Lithuanian-based and most of their list-makers are Lithuanian. Their native alphabet is probably Cyrillic and the name “Philip” is spelled differently in varying languages and alphabets. I imagine this person simply mistranslated from their native language/alphabet to whichever version was most common to them. As an example, proper spellings of this name include: Feeleep (Russian), Felip (Catalan), Felipe (Spanish), Felipino (Spanish), Felippo (Italian), Fil (Polish), Filep (Hungarian), Filib (Scottish), Filip (Czech, Irish, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Scandinavian, and Slavic), Filipe (Portuguese), Filipek (Polish), Filipo (Spanish), Filipp (German and Russian), Filippo (Italian), Filips (Latvian), Fillipp (Russian), Filya (Russian), Fischel (Yiddish), Fulop (Hungarian), Fülöp (Hungarian), Phelipe (Spanish), Philipe (French), Philipp (German), Philippe (French), Phillipos (Greek), Phillippe (French), Phylip (Welsh), Pilib (Irish), Pilipo (Hawaiian), & Vilppu (Finnish)

Check out Prince Phillip. Not pleased. The Queen had to approve all of what was involved in the wedding itself. She looks to be questioning her decision. While Prince William was quietly laughing, her granddaughter Zara sat with her mouth open in a “You can’t be serious”. You don’t usually see this kind of expression on the part of this family.

And she’s actually doing this with the Queen in the room! Gets me laughing ever time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6cuNDN1YKo

Just watched it for the first time. It is brilliant! Queen Elizabeth's humour sense of humour was well known though so I don't think anyone would have found this inappropriate. The reason comedy succeeds is because it gets close to the mark and pushes boundaries.

Bishop Curry's sermon, "The Power of Love", should be recommended viewing for anyone with a functioning heart! Short version (5 mins): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwIg2lWO528 or the long version (13 mins): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gonlKodrmk

A 13 minute wedding sermon! If the special event service is for me, save your 13-minute sermon for my funeral, where I can lay back and enjoy it.

Yes, rather mixed. She got annoyed with William for crouching down and told him to stand up rather abruptly!

She also recently told Princess Anne to greet President Trump, and told Prince Andrew to go to his room and stay there.

They were on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, the Queen told Prince William to stand up and face the crowds.

You can see Edward looking up...it's probably at a fly-past.
