Well at least they do display relevant ads, well integrated in your search, and it didn't become a banner patchwork like most of search engine. I do understand that they need money to run and if they can make it seamless and improve my experience why not? They've always keep them minimal even if they could have made billions more with more intrusive ads and flashy homepages like the others but they only give preference to paying ads for the first few results and that's all.

This is what Google does. They provide something for free, not because they're nice, but because it serves a greater purpose. In the beginning for their web search, they needed traffic and they needed to perfect their algorithms. Once they had what they needed, they monetized it. Google also used to offer free 411 calls,called Google 411. They did this so they could get recordings of accents, speech patterns, and dialects from all over the US. Once they had enough data to build a viable voice recognition system, they shut down Google 411. They always have an end goal for every product and system they roll out and it usually involves piles of cash.

The press only started calling her "the people's princess" after the public response to her death. Before that she was as hated as Meghan in the UK press and papperazzi followed her everywhere so they put ridiculous stories out. Personally I think the only reason some of the public changed perception of her after her death is they felt a bit guilty.

To be fair, the press started calling her "the people's princess" after the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Blair, used the phrase in the speech he gave after her death. And my memory of the time was she was by no means hated by the public at the time of her death. Her involvement with the son of Mohammed Al Fayed was somewhat controversial, he was a controversial figure (see the Cash for Questions scandal for example) but it didn't mean everyone suddenly hated her!

I've drunk a lot of raw milk in my life without any problem, but you have to have a trusted source that you know keeps their facilities as clean as possible. It shouldn't be made illegal, but it definitely should be better regulated than it currently is.

My dad is a pedophile. He molested his own 5yo daughter for about 2 years before we found out. When he got out of prison my grandmother on his side called me and told me that I needed to bring my children to meet him. That he had every right according to God, because he was their grandfather, and if I refused I would burn in hell for not allowing it. I told her I would see her there then. Last word I said to anyone in that family. My cousin called me in July to tell me she passed away. Only word I said after that was 'Good' and I f*****g hung up.

if i remember correctly, his sisters that he molested stood up for him. They said that they didn't even know it had happened to them until the truth came out. In all honesty, I understand. I was raised to believe that marriage was until death do us part and thought after my ex murdered my parents I had to stay with him and faithful regardless or it would be a sin. To break out of that I fully lost my religion because I saw how screwed up it made my mindset on everything. So I get it. She's gonna have to give up her religion to a degree she can't fathom, her family will ostracize her, she'll lose her entire support network. I was lucky in that we had no children together and I had friends who allowed me to process everything and talked sense to me.

I knew a guy who was super cavalier about driving under the influence. Then he died in a road accident, and of course I couldn't help but wonder. Then in a supreme irony, it turned out the guy in the *other* car was - wait for it - drunk driving. He survived but was sent to prison for killing my friend. Sigh.

According to a report I read, she had been pulled over by the troopers, but they got a call about a situation involving a pedestrian further down the road so left her to deal with that emergency, she then hit the two troopers while they were helping the pedestrian, killing all three. As far as I can tell, the trial has not finished yet.

I just looked up her name and read a bunch of articles. She was pulled over for going 110 mph. The men were 29, 33, and 28. The troopers had their organs donated after being pronounced dead at the scene. She posted bail in September, I could not find out when her trial will start. She needs to go away for the rest of her life.

I live near where this happened. If memory serves, she was pulled over by these troopers, but during the stop they had a report to help someone farther down I-95, so they left her. She resumed driving, then struck the troopers and the civilian who were on the shoulder.

Just on that point, pr people and such make women in the public eye speak deeper, because that makes them more leader like or knowledgeable in the opinion of the people. Doesn't seem rare to me. My kids' schools send out notifications stating that absences are excused the next day because of a credible threat to the school. Over the years, young males have been arrested for planning attacks and/or posting threats to our schools. I've picked up my son early due to threats. Two terrorists were killed and a security guard shot on the school district's property. Doesn't seem rare at all.

FFS, they are rare. Look onto the criteria they use to classify a "school shooting." They've been know to count someone committing suicide in their own home as a school shooting because their house was X distance from a school. Edit: I love how I'm getting downvoted for this. Check the comments here. No one is posting the same number of shootings. Why? Because every source uses different criteria. That's my point.

I'm not sure that is something to brag about? And...hang on, 300 school shooting incidents in the USA in 2022 (resulting in 6000 injuries), 526 pupils average per school, that's 157,800 kids, so 7000x more likely means over 1.1 billion sexual assaults by teachers in the USA? In 2022 alone...?

First, any time there are more than ZERO shootings of any kind, it's too many. Second, if you're going to rant and rave about something, please educate yourself first. Does the USA top the charts in # of school shootings? YES! Do they top the charts in PER CAPITA school shootings? NO. So our PERCENTAGE of school shootings is even lower than many countries we're being compared to as worse. You also need to look at how these are categorized. Many countries don't count school shootings into their statistics unless there was a death. The US counts any shooting where there was "just" an injury, which about doubles (if not more) the number. We also need to compare statistics of other "preventable" deaths of minors. School shootings in 2022 accounted for 32 deaths of minors, which is HORRIFYING. But what's more horrifying, is people's complete lack of care and attention behind the wheel of a car that killed over FOUR THOUSAND minors in one year.

In other words your child is much more likely to die traveling to or from school, than to be killed from a school shooter. Again, both are terrible, no doubt. One statistic people purposely leave out when attacking responsible gun owners is that anywhere between 500,000 and 3million violent crimes are prevented each year by responsibly armed Americans. Even the CDC used to have this stat up on their site until they got persuaded by gun control advocates to take it down. Doing the math, based on facts, responsible gun owners save (at worst) 8000 lives every yr and up to (at best) 48000 lives/yr... But who wants facts? Let's just call each other stupid and get nothing accomplished.

Too much of a disconnect from it. This is true. Unfortunately, in the U.S., you can’t force them to get help. You have to prove that he poses a physical danger to himself, or others. Even then, you’re only guaranteed a hold for 2 to 3 days. It may get much worse, before it gets any better.

It was a fine suggestion back then. The zinc–carbon batteries were safe to burn. Zinc and the occasional chlorides produced a funny green flame. Zinc fumes are not dangerous in low enough concentration, and the package was plain cardboard.

Burning dead zinc batteries is probably fine.- they have a pretty low energy density (even a cheap alkaline battery has almost 10 times as much energy) and a fairly unexciting chemical composition, and even a fully charged one isn't going to do anything dramatic if you set fire to it.

For now. I dispose what Disney has done locally here in Florida. Bad enough when COVID hit and they raised the ticket price to over $100 per day per park but they just announced another price hike. Last time I went to Disney with my kids I didn't find much that had changed. So not with the higher ticket price.

My grandfather was a Ukrainian who fled to CZ after having been forced to rebroadcast Radio Moscow. After the Iron curtain came down, he helped people escape CZ into Germany until he was caught. Well, to be fair - it was France with Daladier which was really betraying Czechoslovakia by signing Munich Agreement. France and Czechoslovakia had military alliance at that time … but at the end, French government not only appeased Hitler by signing paper in Munich but also said that Czechoslovakia will be considered as responsible for any war in Europe should the Czechoslovakia defend herself against nazi Germany by force… what a great ally, right?

Chamberlain's "appeasement" was instrumental in buying enough time to build up UK's military strength so they could be able to withstand the first assault (the Battle of Britain) and gave them a head start in working toward the USA/UK pact that later led to the "Lend for Lease" agreements. While he may have been a bit too optimistic, his government spent smartly their borrowed time. Whether he was delusional or just downplaying it for sake's of public opinion is a matter of debate as of today.

It IS awful. Im childless but I'd never make someone feel bad for the gift of their treasured baby. It's the moms that lost it taking care of their four kids during Covid that was reprehensible. You had kids so to act like it's the worst thing in the world to dress them, feed them, and spend quality time with them (without mommy wine), I don't like that.

"Even those that have c sections". A c section is a rather big surgery with all the risks and recovery needs of such a procedure. Please don't treat it as the easy way out. Of course I might be misunderstanding you, your point might be the same as mine: any way of bringing kids to the world is very likely to require time to recover and almost all wants to to care of their infant for some time before returning to work.

It upsets me when people criticize parents just for expressing their feelings. I can be jealous of something a childless person does/has, but I don’t regret my kids or want to change places with them. I also don’t need the smug response of “Well if you wanted ____, then you shouldn’t have had kids.” Parents (especially new parents) struggle a lot, get overwhelmed and doubt themselves, but hurtful comments only reflect poorly on the person making them.

It's amazing the differing POV's on that...for example, we didn't watch the Oscars, but I read about it, then explained what happened to my parents. The first question they asked was did Chris apologize for his comments, yet. I found that interesting...they believe that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything, but if you are stupid, or mean, enough to discard that rule, then you get what you deserve. I think there are a lot of people that feel the same way.

It does. I've long since quit smoking but a half-dozen or so good pulls would often open my lungs almost as well as a bronchodilator such as ephedrine. Cough like the devil doing it but it worked. "Grew out of" asthma years before I quit smoking though...

This is from before emergency asthma inhalers existed. The only way to get medication deep into your lungs was by smoking it. btw-Belladonna is a hallucinogen and in the 60s we smoked these for the mild high.

Actually today there are several herbal cigarettes used for asthma in China. Laugh, but there are pharmacies trying to discern the active ingredients in order to manufacture them as hand held inhalers. Smoke is an aerosol, much the same as hand held nebulizers, only much more energy efficient. In the end I suppose an asthma attack will kill you where inhaling a bit of smoke won't.

Fun fact: Used motor oil is not classified as a toxic waste material in most states in the US. This is because most of that used oil is burned for heat energy which puts heavy metals and PNA’s into the atmosphere. So as crazy as pouring it in a gravel hole in the back yard sounds it’s probably sixes in terms of environmental impact to taking it to the collection service at your local lube stop.

If you have a Walmart/Target/Costco/etc that offers oil changes, you can ask them to put it in their waste stream. That way it gets properly disposed of. Same for any oil change place like Jiffy Lube. That would be my best advice. Anyplace that has hundreds of gallons of waste oil to get rid of won't mind a bit more.

"Darkie" is pronounced exactly like a Malay word 'daki'. It means dirt. Not just regular dirt, mind you. It is the type that sticks to the surface and difficult to remove. Not something that you want to put on your teeth. I remember the jokes that went around when Darkie was first introduced in Malaysia. Very soon after, they changed it to Darlie.

You should have seen the commercials they put on tv (in Taiwan) in the early 1970s! They were animated with black face minstrel jazz bands playing as a tube of Darkie toothpaste prancing around. There was a joke about it is easy to find a Black person in the dark because their teeth are so white. Hardly pc material.

There were old stage shows depicting black people as cowardly, stupid, and superstitious. If I remember correctly it was called mammy (the name for a slave nanny). These shows are also why blackface is so heinous, big name actors of the time would dress in black face and perform as these characters for comedy. Questions like this is why it's important to remember even the grim portions of history.

No, no downvote here. When my besty an I were teens I visited her Baptist Church--Southern Georgia! I was Methodist. That man insisted that if i didn't get down on my knees right then - well, I was going to hell. I cringed my way thru the yapping and got out of there. Months later my friend told me that she had been molested a.few times by the preacher there. There may have been some who believed and had the same type of problem, but this was back in late 60's-early 70's and stuff like that wasn't talked about.

That's what happens when a belief system gives you a get out of jail free card rather than making you responsible for your failings. I often see Christians asking people how they can possibly be good people if they don't have religion. Like, folks, it's not hard to know right from wrong, and it's easier to do right if you think about the people you've wronged rather than about a book saying we're all intrinsically bad but that a dead guy will forgive you for all the terrible s**t you've done if you just ask him hard enough.

Info from the Reddit thread, for those of us, like me, who wanted further clarification: Pastor John Lowe of Indiana's New Life Christian Church stood before his congregation on May 22 to explain how he had sinned 20 years ago by "committing adultery," saying he had only kept quiet so long to protect the woman with whom he had slept, and asked everyone for forgiveness. The church cut their livestream broadcast at the point when a woman stood up and said that it was not an affair as she had only been 16 at the time (the pastor agreed with this claim) and that the pastor and others had covered up many such acts of sexual abuse. In a sense, this quote is technically right when he says that the secrecy is part of the sin, since it was made after the abuse had occurred.

He was criticized his entire ministry by the religious ines who thought they knew more about God than he did. I've had family die of a preventable illness, due to f*****g Facebook fearmongering. I love even my conspiracy theorist family members, but that antivaxx s**t is a death cult. Plenty of otherwise nice, intelligent people fall prey to cults when they're most vulnerable, and global lockdown made a lot of people very psychologically vulnerable. That's how disinformation killed more people than covid ever had to.

There were recently suspected polio cases in the UK. 2 reasons - first some parents hadn't bothered to vaccinate as "hey, it's eradicated here" and second, some families had recently been abroad, and had their kids vaccinated with the old style vaccine (attenuated - ie a live but weakened vaccine) rather than the inert vaccine more commonly used in first world countries. The kids then 'excreted' and live (but attenuated) viruses got into the sewage, thus causing a risk to unvaccinated kids.

These three guys were all people who were/are very vocally very affectionate towards their wives. Ned Fulmer admitted to cheating on his wife for years, and John Mulaney was rumored to have cheated on his as well, though I didn't keep up with him, so I'm not certain about that- only sure that he got divorced very quickly and unexpectedly.

I believe that she admitted to "not liking the source material much". Why the hell would you agree to produce a show when you dislike the source material? Plus, apparently some of the show's writers also disliked the books. Yeah, you're not going to get a good show out of those people. Plus, Cavill is a huge nerd (in a good way) and LOVES the books, so there's no way he was going to stand for the travesty those people were making out of the source material.

It is really sad too they chose to go off the books. They took some really progressive ideas and went back to dumb TV tropes. Like Geralt & Dandelion's really healthy male friendship in the book. Instead, they portray it in the show like the trope of a "big" man has no real friends and is annoyed by this "little" man who is desperately trying to be his friend. In the books, Geralt adores him & when asked why, he says Dandelion is the only person who accepts him as he is and is the only person who gets him. In a modern world where adult men are having fewer & fewer friends but more and more dangerous mental health issues, I was saddened to see them not portray a healthy male friendship where 2 men listen to & support each oth There are several examples of them doing this. What they did to Yennifer's character is horrific. Let's take a powerful woman who has regrets or questions about some choices (like, I don't know, 90% of career women) and just turn her into a straight up b***h. SMH.

What makes it funnier is that when Cavill suggested they NOT ruin an emotional scene with a joke, but instead have Geralt say something that underscored the moment, the writers said it was incredible and the perfect way to go. The line he suggested was how the scene in the book went. So not only do they say they dislike it, but they have admitted the book is better, without even realizing they did that. Brilliant fools.

eh, as much as I hate pootin, the war isn't the sole reason there is a gas/energy crisis- at least not in the UK. The real reason is that our temporary prime minister, Liz Truss, sold our gas reserves. The UK gets only 4% of its gas and 9% of its oil from Russia. The real reason there's a shortage is because after the pandemic, OPEC countries didn't produce enough oil for the demand. And it'll take a while for the supplies to return to normal. :/

Because Lonely Planet is an Australian editor, who publishes travel guides mostly aimed at the anglo-american market. During Cold War USSR was open to tourism through a few state-owned agencies, and after the 1980 Olympics access to the USSR became relatively easy for western tourists. In the mid to late 80s USSR was considered an exciting, adventurous and super-cheap holiday destination for European tourism, so a budget travel guide in English made plenty of sense.

That's evil. I was asked in an interview why I wouldn't be to be found on Facebook (some years ago, he tried appearantly). "Because I didn't like how much control over my personal data I have to hand out, also because I don't see any advantage it would be to me" - this went into some chattery from his part - a monologue more than an interview - that people who don't expose a lot about them have something to hide. Well ... I'm not that sad they didn't hire me, wouldn't have wanted to work there, after that interview. Guy was nuts.

Yes, but there is a fairly prominent transgender character, Pippa Midgely, in one of the mystery novels J.K.Rowling wrote under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. And she is portrayed relatively sympathetically, considering the transphobic garbage Rowling(Galbraith) has been spewing after the publication of The Silkworm. I'm always surprised this hasn't received more commentary and analysis. So the idea of Rowling writing Snape as secretly Trans wouldn't inherently conflict with her recent views, which seem to have hardened in the face of criticism.

The concept was that you pay full-price once, then get an upgraded model every 2 years thereafter for $99. That was a fantastic deal in the late 90s and early 00s. Effectively, your PC would never be obsolete. The concept was great, the business model not so much.

and WB was reshooting scenes with them all whilst they were between arrests, under investigation, etc. Its honestly kind of ridiculous considering how they treated Depp for the allegations (which he has now won against) and there is literal proof ezra has done these things because THEY LITERALLY TAUNTED THE POLICE. ugh.

Well DC hasn't exactly had a great run with most of their movies recently have they? They say it did poorly at test screenings. Now that could be because people suck and didn't want to see a trans actress......or it could just mean the movie was bad. I'm leaning towards the latter since most people don't actually research the cast and crew before watching a movie.

I thought it didn't even get any test screenings? And they didn't even complete the SFX? Just execs took a look at it and felt it'd be worth more as a tax write-off. You're probably right that it's a bad film, but I thought in this case, test audiences never saw it...

the new "Flash" has some mental issues. Maybe they should research the actors a little better (not to say Ivory Aquino does not have a right to be cat girl)
