I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News, So I Illustrated 50 Of The Best Ones From 2019
We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart.
However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.
Because of that, I started The Happy Broadcast. It's an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. Also, this year, I’ve illustrated even more happy news than in 2018.
We need more positive news to acknowledge that the world is actually getting better little by little.

When I'm working on The Happy Broadcast, I try to pick news that has an international appeal and touches themes like animal rights, climate change and science. News that shows how much we’re progressing on many fronts despite being often bombarded with few-mongering headlines.
I am so happy for their victory, but just find it bonkers that an indigenous tribe had to fight a legal battle to protect their land in the first place.
I think there are many reasons why negative news is dominating the media. It's like a sudden disaster a, it's more compelling than, for example, little improvements. Bad things can happen quickly, but good things aren’t built in a day, and as they unfold, they're out of sync with the news cycle.
As humans, we have this thing called “negative bias” that make us respond quicker to bad or dangerous situations. Nowadays, this bias is getting in the way of our happiness and well-being, and even our productivity because most of the narrative surrounding us (print, online or mobile) is that the “world is ending".
I think we should find a balance between negative and positive news. From politics to climate change and economy, negative and bad news surrounds us everywhere we go. A potential solution could be to limit the amount of bad news, basically slow down our personal news cycle, adding some positive news to our “news diet” to make sure that our outlook on the world is more optimistic. Also, it's very important to invest time to deal with misinformation and the reliability of news sources.
Hm, I think Sweden must have forgot to apply then. We dont have stray dogs, at least for decades. Any lost dog gets collected, if no owner is found it gets adopted via Animal Protection. I have seen one or two lost dogs, where we found the owner, but never a genuine stray.
SOOOO not against this! But....shouldn't it be equal pay for equal skill? (meaning, no race, gender, age, or any discrimination at all!) If you have more skill in the task, you get paid more, if you have less you get paid less. Plain and simple (yet I know it is more difficult to prove wrong-doing that way too)
People don’t get paid based on skill they get payed based on position, which in theory correlates with skill.
Load More Replies...Are you kidding, Australia has had am equal pay legislation since 1969
I call bull s**t on this one, there are lots of countries that have done that, including my own
Unless you're an athlete or an actor, you will have the same salary as another gender or you can pretty much ready up for a lawsuit. "Pay gaps" are still existent because women tend to care for their children far more than men are, meaning there will be a loss of salary/raise/promotion. Iceland simply tries to even-out both sides and that's something no country has ever done. Is it necessary ? That's up to them to tell us in a few years.
Load More Replies...Even when your taking the same exact job..if she takes off personal time for x,y,z...why should she get the same pay as the man that shows up and does the job...if anything men should get the same amount of personal time off as women
exactly. Especially that maternity leaves make her co-workers work more to cover for her, quite often. Alternativelly, employer has to put money into getting a new person on-board.
Load More Replies...ABOUT TIME! I was a middle-manager computer department boss at a major company (back in the 80s) and I found out that the male peeps made almost 30% more than me. I questioned it and they said "Well they have families!" I went to HR about it and they didn't do anything. When I went in and reported it to the government office, it was changed! I was the first brave woman who did that...what is WRONG is WRONG!
What does this mean? ain't people suposed to be payed equaly regarding their skill and effort, not gender?
Yes. And they do in the US. Don't let the leftists fool you with bad data.
Load More Replies...I know women who work the same jobs as men and make more than the men. In different fields too
I'm not sure what Iceland has done differently (I'm happy to learn just not have the time right now, feel free to educate me) but I'm fairly certain that many countries have had this law for ages (as my own country - the Czech Republic). The issue is more about enforcing this law. No matter what - it's definitely a step in a good direction.
Yes, UK has had the law for decades. Enforcement is the problem.
Load More Replies...Australia has had the legislation equal pay for equal work since 1969 and Anti-discrimination laws based on sex was introduced in 1984.
Sadly the loopholes : Women just don't get promoted to the highest positions. 2 "Womens' " work gets renamed. example, nurses are still nearly all women. the men in nursing tend to be in the highest paid jobs.
Load More Replies...This artical obviously referencing the 'Wage Gap'. People would do well to actually look at the studies and dig a little bit, the 70 cents for every dollar stat is based on studies on the gross life time earning by gender, they are NOT a study of Sally makes $14 and Tim makes $20 an hour. The difference is primarily do to time off for child rearing and a quirk that females tend towards careers that make less (not my opinion, just the numbers) more female Nurses and teachers for example. Whether those careers should make less could be a debate for sure. This idea is even debunked by some feminist organisations because its misleading. I am sure wage gaps are a thing in some places but people have tried and we can't currently prove that beyond the anecdotal stage as there to many variables, my opinion is one could likely argue and prove that age has a larger factor than gender, much less skill and competence.
what hogwash, equal pay has been a thing in the us for ages, equal pay for EQUAL WORK - but because women don't do the high paying dangerous jobs that men do, it looks like inequality.
and yet women and men are payed the same for the same job in every single modern country I've lived in. Virtue signaling gets you no where
...which is just an empty promise. In most countries, men and women earn more or less the same if all circumstances except for gender are the same; however, it's mostly personal choices which result in an overall difference. Oh, and the US has the equal pay act since the 1960s.
Human beings do not respect nature and ALL life it supports, therefore do not respect each other. Load More Replies...It is not equal pay, it is equal earnings... Basic economics and understanding of how we humans work shows a difference in earnings. Equal pay is legal in most western counties regardless, and if not it is used because common sense makes it. I wish the "gender pay gap" myth will die for the western counties. Onlu true in parts of Africa, middle east, parts of Asia etc.
Some of my own peers have a problem with the term 'equal rights' for men and women. Is there anyone that understands this or shares that view? I honestly don't get it.
Men have more opportunities for work more and this means longer hours away from home and family, more stress, higher rates of heart attacks, suicide, depression, and a sharp decline in life expectancy for the gender as a whole. Women would like in on that as it means a bump in pay. All anyone talks about is the money and not what comes with it.
Load More Replies...This is not necessarily a good thing, at least in the U.S., studies already debunked the wage gap myth and found that it was more based on performance, life choices, choice of carrier and assertiveness. Some jobs women even disproportionally made more than men. The wage gap myth said "same exact job" but it turns out that was not true at all, not everyone who works at McDonalds has the same "job" too. Though if things are different for Iceland then that's a whole other story.
Not true. America made this the law in 1965. Oh! You mean equal payment for different hours in different job? You could have just said that to avoid being a pseudo-journalist hack spreading slander against the male sex that's purely intended to inflame hatred.
They should also enforce equal productivity requirements. it is frustrating to see laws demanding someone is paid the same as another, while not having the capability of the physical demands of a physically intensive position to equal productivity or product output, while hypocritically receiving legal compensation protection.
Legal pay is already enforced and a las in the united states. You can sue companies if they are openly paying men more then women or vice versa. There is not “equal pay” because it does not account for the fact that less women have jobs, less hours worked, or jobs/positions. It is simply a statistic, no company has different salary for women $ men, nor does the military
The equal pay act of 1963 in the united states has existed for over 40 years. This is a L I E .
The united states literally has had a law about this for over 40 years. The equal pay act of 1963.
I'm all for equality but to force it? That gets the government into your business and we don't want that.
William, if people behaved in a responsible, ethical manner, there would be no need for laws and regulations.
Load More Replies...Well recent studies have shown that one of the biggest reasons men in America are being paid more then women is because men are naturally more bold and confident, so they will ask for raises more frequently then women. There is a gap but if women gained some more confidence the they might get paid the same. And some women do which is awesome. But it's just fact that if you are good at your job and you are confident enough to ask for more raises, then you will get paid more then someone who is just as skilled but lacks confidence. If you take gender out it is still about skill and confidence, not man or woman.
Several other countries already had that law I believe. No one should be paid less for same work being done is already a thing just saying. That will definitly cause a furore on the fashion market where men are paid at least eight times less than women models. Just saying.
Western feminists like to complain about the "wage gap" but never when it benefits them, such as when Google was discovered to be paying its female engineers a higher wage than their male co-workers of equal responsibility. Ironically, it was a lawsuit by female employees claiming Google was discriminating against female employees that made Google reveal its data to show that they were actually paying women more than men. Anyway, many countries, such as America, have already been paying women the same wages as men, despite how in most cases, they do much less work and take more time off. In the many jobs I had before settling with my current career, it was always my female co-workers relying on men to do the "hard" work so why should they be entitled to raises? Promotions? Work harder, ladies, and you'll find yourself being recognized and rewarded more often. As for Iceland and its law, it's one of the countries that is really late to enforce equal pay.
1. The US has several equal pay laws 2. According to studies by the (private feminist organization) American Association of University Women and the (government agency) Bureau of Labor Statistics show that men and women make pretty much the same after controlling for things like job choice, experience, education, etc... It's just not common knowledge because sensationalist media like this website keep propagating misinformation and suckers buy into it without exercising a healthy level of skepticism I know most people won't read these but in case you want to, you can find the numbers in the conclusion sections: https://www.aauw.org/files/2013/02/graduating-to-a-pay-gap-the-earnings-of-women-and-men-one-year-after-college-graduation.pdf https://www.shrm.org/hr-today/public-policy/hr-public-policy-issues/Documents/Gender%20Wage%20Gap%20Final%20Report.pdf

In Australia, the principle of "equal pay for equal work" was introduced in 1969. Anti-discrimination on the basis of sex was legislated in 1984. (from Wiki)
This actually makes it seem like other countries willfully pay women less, which is a lie.
The Equal Pay Act - which wakes in illegal to pay men and women different wages for doing the same job - was introduced in 1963 in the USA. Sorry Iceland, you are a bit late to the party.
So dumb. Maybe it's different there but in the US the pay gap is a myth.
Where I work, women who apply for jobs set their salary expectations way lower than the average men, but as we believe in equal pay these women also get a nice surprise when their offers way exceed their expectations. I assume they ask for less as they get paid less elsewhere, but I also wonder if there are other factors why men ask for more money.
I can give you a big factor in it, and one I have personal experience with. Men are encouraged to be aggressive in business, while women aren’t; we’re supposed to be gentle and motherly (yeah, it’s archaic and it sucks, but it still happens). The men are considered mavericks, but the women are called bitches—-for the same behavior. If a man pushes for more pay when applying for a job, he’ll probably get hired at the rate he asks for. A woman doing the same will probably not even be offered the job in the first place.
Load More Replies...What have they done differently to all the other countries where this is illegal?
Mandated transparency. I believe all companies there have to assign specific salaries and requirements for each position, then report employee earnings—-and I mean backing it up with payroll records, so no opportunity to falsify them—-to their government’s labor department (however it’s named or designated). They probably get randomly audited up the wazoo too, so honesty ends up being considered the best policy.
Load More Replies...I beg to differ. China has already done it in the 90s. Both the Constitution (1982)(Article 48) and the law of Labor (1994)(Article 56) have legally enforced equal pay for women and men.
Well this is wonderful and about time, now lets get the rest of the world on board!
What is even better they have a holiday where you just give books and chocolate, of course.!

This is complete sh*t. I love this article but this point is moot. Many countries have a law that make it illegal to pay women and men differently. It's been the law in the UK since the 80's.

In other words, daddies are going to tend to their children/babies just like mommies are. If you think it's about inequality of salary you are wrong and missing the point of the whole "pay gap" issue.
41% of parliamentarians in Iceland are women, and 65% of university students too.
In 30 years' time, we will look at this and think: "Man, the world was so r******d back in 2019".
I thought they already had done this in Sweden!! But perhaps it was just Stockholm!
Well, where I work, you get paid by rank and and more depending wheter you have a college degree, Masters or PHd
It's legaally enforced almost Everywhere. It is a crime to discriminate by gender in most western countrys. This goal has been already achieved. I mean think about it, if companies can really get away with paying less to women, than why don't every company just use women instead of all the men? Cause they can not and do not pay less for the same work to woman.
It's not legally enforced. There is legislation but it's not enforced. In Iceland it is, companies are required to submit data on employer wages to external auditors and those who are not found to be paying their staff equally risk a fine. Elsewhere the onus is not on the employer, it's on the employee who a) doesn't have access to information on staff wages and b) probably doesn't want to risk their job by accusing their employer of pay discrimination.
Load More Replies...For those of you that think that American women "already have equality".
This requires transparency and it has no culture in most of the EU countries.
YES! again sanity prevails. A woman does a job she gets the same as a man doing the job What on earth is the difference this never made sense to me that they should have two sets of pay. Why? a job is a job does not matter who does it pay is the same regardless.
In a totally male construct - ie; having to "go to work". Women don't like to leave their families everyday like men do. Men designed the construct because it suits them, because they get away from the noise of family.
THANK YOU! Thank you so much, to ALL OF YOU GUYS who have decided to MANSPLAIN THAT NO GENDER PAY GAP really exists. Ooooh, you are soooo smart. (Sorry, I have to puke)
Everyone claiming that their country has had this in place for ages and is way ahead of Iceland is dead set wrong. Pretty much every country has legislation that says it's illegal to discriminate on gender when it comes to pay but it doesn't mean jack given it's up to the employee to identify the discrepancy and take it to court. Given salaries are usually kept confidential and most people would not be willing to risk their jobs like this the legislation is pretty much worthless. What Iceland has done is legally enforce it, it means companies with more than 25 staff are required to obtain equal pay certification from accredited auditors and can be fined if they don't meet the requirements.
I've been to Iceland, and in my limited experience it almost appeared as though your average Icelandic woman could kick your average Icelandic man's a*s down the street, so there's that.
It is disgusting in this day and age that there is still a marked difference between pay scales for men and women. If they do the same job, they should be paid the same.
At Last!!!!! Only taken Y E A R S, but one country has made the stand - hurray! xx
Finally, equality at last. No reason why other countries can do this.
Now HOW HARD WAS THAT? Iceland also jailed its crooked bankers, liquidated crooked banks, the nation took a financial hit for four years and is now healthier than ever -- and bankers realize there are consequences... in Iceland. In the U.S.? Not so much.
Equal opportunities employer here. If you need three people to do the same basic job the person specs and job description will be the same and the salary grade/scale the employees will be on is the same. Each role is allocated a grade and is nothing to do with the person. Performance would be discussed in annual appraisals and any lesser performers would be expected to up their game. The 'star' performer just gets kudos or maybe an extra increment on the pay scale if they are really worth it. The grading of the job can only be altered if the job description and person specification needs to change to reflect an increase in responsibilities that have been identified. All of it is very rigidly laid out and no-one gets pay rises based on a whim or because of who you know. You go up the payscale within the grade you are on. Once you reach the top of that scale you either accept that you won't get annual incremental pay rises anymore or you look for another job.

The rabid, right-wingers still spewing their nonsense that renewables will drive prices up so high no one will be able to have electricity will not be noticing this development. The belief disconfirmation paradigm is too powerful for some people to overcome.

Although the use of solar panels is green, many solar panel manufacturing processes are not. To create a solar panel, caustic materials will emit greenhouse gases. Plus less than 11% of each panel has salvageable metals so they're not very recyclable once they're usable life has expired. Most people aren't aware that the 'green' alternatives often aren't.

People are asking why this matters, here's why: Women are still getting fewer opportunities to direct movies, and even if there would be women who could make amazing movies, they're sidelined by some of the male directors that are really mediocre and produce cheap cash grab movies.

It is necessary, because often private investors will support male entrepreneurs over female entrepreneurs. This happens mostly due to people in power currently being predominantly male and as many studies have proven, men are much less likely to believe that women are capable of success in a serious work environment. This can be ascribed to both deliberate and subconscious sexism. It's the same argument for why people of ethnicities other than caucasian should be given benefits that equalize the playing field. A group in power will not willingly give over their own power.

Load More Replies...This is a great post and many of these are amazing things, the problem is that the more we keep people alive and the longer they live the bigger the population gets which isn't sustainable. So it's a double edged sword. It's a catch-22.
Really fun, informative, and feel-good post. Needed this today.
Thank you, these are great. I would love to have each meme linked to a reliable source so I can happily spread them around with the source link! What you think??
Thank you very much to make me happy today! Btw, #39 and #46 are the same...
It's good to see someone wanting to spread good news! Sad that so many people had to add negative comments to many of them, kinda missed the point didn't they?
This is the most amazing post I read in the last few years!! Thank you for gathering such valuable content and making such beautiful, interesting illustrations!! Love the way each pic is designed. Please make it a video and I'm sure many will watch it.
What about stop complaining about bad news, and get to work to fix what's bad in the world; then, there would be only good news to report. Get involved.
Thanks Bored Panda, much good news, also, great information !!!
I think a balance is better. Transparency reduces corruption. Confidentiality "divides and conquers" unity in humanity. All CULTures reduce free thinking and truer happiness. Imagine developmentally disabled having equal power and wealth to intellectuals.
When I read these good news headlines, it helps me realize that we are making progress. Yes, there's a lot of bad news in the world, but good news is just as plentiful when we look for it. Good news is healing. I'm sharing this on all my social media pages!
Lifted me ... made me smile. Thank you for sharing such great news.
Best news I've read in a long time. Thank you this has given me hope for the future and made me happy.
Love the illustrations and news they represent. Would like to have a link to the original news story for reference plz
Thank you Mario. A good effort was put into this and it was very interesting. Just a pity our world is so distorted that these things happen once in a blue moon. We can have the world be mostly fantastic and turn things around. But we have to withdraw from bank issued money. This is imperative if we want peace in the world and in our lives because banksters will bleed you dry. Yes even you.
Awesome post -- I agree that there's WAY too much negative bias on the internet. One of my favorite pieces of "good news" from this year is that the European Investment Bank, the world's largest multilateral lender, recently announced that it will stop funding fossil fuel projects by 2021 and divert those funds to renewables instead. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-climate-europe-eib-idUSKBN1XO2OS
I love it, now this should inspire all countries to follow, not just one!
Thank you! If we keep this up maybe the future generations will actually have a planet
There's been a ton of great news lately though, communists got BTFO'd in a lot of western countries, the US economy is doing great, brexit is finally going to go through without impedance. Overall SJW's are losing and the people are regaining some of their power.
This made me feel good!! I do wish I hadn't read some of the comments though. Just be happy with the good stuff!!
That was a tonic. I am going to save it to look at when I get down about the state of the planet.
This should be printed and bound into a children’s book annually! I would totally buy it for my nieces and nephews
Reading this just made me feel sadder! How can homo sapiens have developed so much technology and yet remain so stupid! So sad...
Thank you sooooo much. I bet there are plenty more of these positive news. If we could concentrate on those instead of bad news, scandals, fake news and all the bs we are exposed to everyday, the world would be a better place. I applaud your dedication.
This was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Thank you so much for taking the time to put together and share this positive news with the rest of us.
Nice list of happy events except don't see why Taiwan would be happy about joining the morally depraved countries that support homosexuality.
I have been plagued with depression for weeks. Blah. I cry every morning. This morning, it was finally about something good. Thanks Bored Panda for making this the top story in my email.
When you are bombarded with stories of decline, loss, and hopelessness it is easy to think "Why bother" - this is why we should bother! Perhaps the news channels should take a leaf out of Mauro Gatti's post and throw us a sucess story once and a while. Thank you
I've been reading a lot of pessimistic stuff lately, so this really helped me out. Thanks. :)
Love these happy, good-news stories; keep them coming to preserve our sanity!
Thank you for Real life giving News Strange to Feel so starved Overwhelmingly Grateful for a glimpse of life giving World issues included in the news For the eyes ask us to consider: the addiction to trauma can be Starving this species Reading what feeds us life may be more critical to survival than Tracking the enemy.
3 things to say! 1. All of this is magnificent! Bravo to all 😊👏🏻 2. It’s so sad to see the differences between parts of the world-some make fake islands for flora and fauna while some are getting electricity. 3. People are awful. To even come to this state,to destroy everything on their way... In any case, kudos for all the positivity here 😊
I am sad to see the us very low on the list of contributions. We as a people need to start to fight again for the rights of our children, grandchildren, etc. We expect them to respect us, when we do not have any respect ourselves. Let us make 2020 a year where there is more good news than bad.
Fantastic !!! Thank you for this very welcome GOOD NEWS ✨⭐️🌟💛 I love positive movements !!! Signed: a Dutch artist living in the midst of the frequent strikes in Paris.
This gives us all hope and inspiration to make a difference. Thank you. Plus the drawings are so adorable. Had a smile on my face the whole time while reading the piece!
Thanks. I sometimes think networks, including weather channels, search out the most Godawful stuff they can find. A little "fair and balanced" would be nice . This helps.
