Food is fuel, and that's a fact – however, it's not only a source of nourishment. It keeps us together by gathering our families on holidays and Friday night dinners, and it instantly improves our moods when we're in need of a pick-me-up.

Do you remember how popular it was to make banana bread during the lockdowns? Even if you're not a fan of preparing the food, it's still a great way of bonding with your loved ones, plus you get to eat some delicious meals afterwards.

While some folks are more into gourmet foods, others enjoy more affordable cuisine. Well, this online user took it to one of Reddit's communities and asked fellow members to describe the "poor people's food" they'll always eat regardless of how big their wallets might get. The post has managed to receive over 45K upvotes in just a day and was showered with interesting answers.

Good bread and three types of cheese, Old Cheddar, Gouda and Mozzarella are my current favourites. Just a touch of mustard and buttered right to the edges and it always makes me happy.

When my daughter was little she couldn't remember what these were called - (in Oz we call them jaffles and they can be filled with anything) so she asked her grandfather for a cheese splat. They have forever been known in our family as splats

The last month that my dad was stationed in West Germany (1956) because of the pay schedule they had no money for food! My dad knew which mushrooms were safe to eat, so they would go pick them. Farmers used to let the military do tank maneuvers in their potato fields because the treads dug them up. The soldiers got as many potatoes for free. My dad work with tanks. Every which way you could make potatoes and mushrooms, for a solid month. It was like the shrimp rendition from Forrest Gump.

I will make a fried cake out of just about anything that can be shredded on a box grater, mixed with an egg and some flour, and fried in a pan- potatoes, beets, parsnips, apples- a mixture of these is the best.

I haven't thought about this in years but my grandma used to make this... homemade bread buttered and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar toasted in the toaster oven. She's been gone 25 years and I've tried to do this myself but it's never been the same. (Possibly because of the nearly universal truth that anything your grandmother makes you will always taste better no matter what it is)

I often envy people with these sorts of grammy memories. One of mine loved all the grandkids except me and my brothers so all we could hope for was the leftovers from the cakes she made for them. That is until my Mom had enough and cut all communication with that side of the family before we kids could understand how humiliating we were treated. The other grandmother was a psycho, a bitter, revolting excuse for a human being, with a limp, weak POS for a husband who let her do what she wanted. They lived next door to us when I was born and it took them about a year to take a look at me. When I was six I broke my knee and against all worries my Mom let me "vacation" with them for a week at their weekend house. They were told that I cannot under any circumstances stand on that leg and she gave me a room upstairs, then screamed at me for an hour when I tried to crawl up the stairs without standing, with a cast from crotch to ankle.

Corned beef hash. Tinned corned beef, diced spuds, HP sauce, tomato paste and water. I grew up eating it, my kids grew up eating it. Love with bread and dumplings. Big winter staple even now, especially chucked into the slow cooker in the morning before work and ready to eat when you walk in the door after. Cottage pie is probably a very close 2nd with fish pie. Now I'm hungry.....!

Thank you for responding! I’m in the US and we don’t enjoy the convenience of ready-made shepherd’s pie. It’s easy enough to throw together. As a matter of fact, I think that’s what’s for dinner tomorrow night. Tonight it’s crab cakes, cucumber& tomato and onion salad and Macaroni and cheese! Not that anyone asked, but I’m getting myself hungry! And, for dessert, in case you’re interested, will be deep fried cherry hand-helds with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Fast, easy half-sour pickles: Wash your cukes, cut however you like (slices, spears), boil 1 C. vinegar and 3 C. water with 2T pickling spices, 1T Kosher salt, pour hot brine over cukes in whatever container you like with halved garlic cloves and a dill sprig. Chill and in the next few days, best pickles ever!

I can literally eat a jar of pickles in one sitting. My favorite snack food. Low in calories and carbs 😋

Someone Online Wondered: “What Is Some ‘Poor People Food’ That You Will Eat No Matter How Wealthy You Get?“, And 30 Folks Delivered Maruchan Ramen. I love Maurchan ramen so much and ramen in general. I could be a millionaire but i would still have a pantry stocked with ramen. I have bad insomnia and when i was younger and would wake up at night, my dad would make me chicken or beef Maruchan ramen. I still remember sitting in our dark dining room while my dad got the ramen from the top shelf. He would drain the water a little and put in the seasoning so it wasn’t ever FULLY cooked. I rarely see my dad anymore so when i have a bad day, i eat ramen. the same way he made it. I was 4 then and that’s the only way i’ll make it now.

Add everything - frozen veg, eggs, meat, leftovers, salad. :) ramen is great for stretching higher quality ingredients. I made an amazing ramen with 6 day old pizza once (don’t @ me)

I was going to say the same thing. I stretch it by using crumbled tofu, minced veggies like mushrooms and carrots, oats, TVP- whatever's cheap that I can add to extend the meat (it also makes it a little more healthy if you're trying to watch your meat intake)

Fry the sausage, maybe half an onion along with it, plenty of black pepper, sprinkle with about a third cup of flour stir it in well for a minute or so then slowly add milk, stirring constantly, lower heat and simmer until thickened. This is just as good with hamburger and served over mashed potatoes.

I make sausage gravy with ground chicken. When you brown the chicken, just add breakfast sausage spices. You'd never know the difference! Then, make the gravy with fat free 1/2 and 1/2 and fat free milk and you've got a relatively healthy gravy.

When I was a kid, we lived in New Orleans for a year and a half while my mom was in grad school. She was a single mom and didn't work during that time because she had to focus on school. This was back in the early 70s, so stuff was cheap, but we were on a tight budget then. We had red beans and rice a lot, and I still make it because I love it.

When I was broke and lived in the dorms, we weren't allowed any cooking implements in our rooms, and I could not get take out, no fridges etc. I would break off pieces of hard uncooked ramen, dip it in mayo from a mayo packet, and sprinkle a teeny tiny bit of the seasoning on it. It was good, that shows how hungry I was, lol.

This has ruined any other mac and cheese for me. Any time I've gotten mac n cheese at a restaurant, or made it with real cheese, it's just not as satisfying as Kraft. Do I recognize that it's objectively worse? Yes. Does it taste amazing? Also yes.

Kraft or homemade with real cheese? Why not both? I make a box of Kraft Mac and cheese, add a little bit extra milk (~1/3 total, instead of the 1/4 cup the directions say), then sprinkle some shredded cheddar in top. Stir it in and set back on the burner on low for just a minute to get the cheese melty. Made it just last night, actually!

Yes, it has to be American cheese bc of the mild taste (good foil against the bologna) and meltiness- occasionally sliced Munster is ok, but that pasteurized processed cheese food is where it's at.

Did you ever try adding extra seasonings to it? I found a Doritos popcorn recipe online that I altered a little. I use nutritional yeast, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt (I think paprika and cumin were also in it).

Now, see, I'm wondering if they meant that they used the seasoning packet from the ramen to season their popcorn. That could be interesting. Though I'm probably completely off and they did in fact eat them separately

Real mashed potatoes... all the way. That instant stuff is so hideous. We get a box in a supplier Christmas packet every year. I cant bear to waste anything (especially so thoughtfully given) so I use it to thicken my stews - just a tablespoon or so. Works really well and you cant taste it with the herbs and spices of the stew.
