There are many factors that go into creating a great film. The writing, directing, cinematography and acting must all come together to perfectly compliment the score and the film’s themes. If even one small detail is off, the entire movie can go from excellent to mediocre, and that includes the casting.
If you’ve ever watched a movie where it felt like one actor in particular was always taking you out of their character's world, it’s likely that they just weren’t the best casting choice. Cinephiles on Reddit have been discussing some of the films where questionable casting bothered them, so below, you'll some of their most insightful and controversial thoughts, as well as an interview with the person behind IMO Flicks. Enjoy reading through if you're a movie buff yourself, and be sure to upvote all of the hot takes you agree with!

James Corden, in anything and everything he's ever been in.
Dear America, we realise that Mr Corden's talkshow has finished and you are keen to return him to us but please, please, please keep him. Thanks.
Fine, fine... we'll keep Corden and in exchange you guys take one of the Kardashians. Come on, it's a good deal!
Load More Replies...That’s actually the only reason I know who he is. He was great as Craig, a poor bloke that had to put up with the 11th Doctor as his roommate for an episode. There was a follow up episode where the Doctor returns to help Craig take care of his infant son while his wife is out of town—while defeating some Cybermen of course.
Load More Replies...What is actually wrong with James Corden? I don't understand I'm not a fan I've never watched anything of his I would just like to know.
He has a very inflated view of himself and his talents.
Load More Replies...It's sad to see how people just agree that they can s**t all over James Corden and say anything about him. Yes, he's done a lot of bad movies, but it's not like "Cats" and a lot of those other musicals are great aside from him. And he's also done good stuff. People just conveniently choose to forget or ignore that stuff. Leave him alone. Enough already. I will really miss his talkshow, I love it.
He's a horrible, patronising little man who uses his celebrity status to throw his weight around and threatens business owners if they won't kiss his behind.

Not really a good movie, but when it comes to miscasting I immediately think of Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman.
Charlize is too good looking to be a Queen who is supposed to be jealous of a Snow White who looks like Kristen. Not saying Kristen is ugly, she’s fine, but Charlize is easily another tier.
Nonono I looooved Charlize in this movie! I'd say that Kristen is not the right beauty for SnowWhite. She should have flowing/wavy black hair and full lips. Not too full though. But Charlize was great. Definitely not too good looking, as the queen was and should be beautifull, but her aging makes her feel less pretty and she feels threatened by youth. So Charlize was a very good match. Kristen was not.
Totally agree, but then I don't think Kristen Stewart could act her way out of a paper bag. She basically is only capable of ONE facial expression.
Load More Replies...Kristen Stewart was the real poor choice here. Casting her in anything is a poor choice honestly.
The movie was bad because Kristen Stewart is bad at acting. Her looks were fine for the role. Not hate, just truth.
Hard disagree on Charlize in this movie. Yes, she was hot. Really hot. Nothing wrong with that. Also, this movie's plot had it not just be the Queen being jealous of Snow White's looks. So the argument that she was too hot because of that is invalid.
To gain more insight on this topic from a movie expert, we reached out to the team at IMO Flicks, a film review hub, to hear their thoughts on how poor casting choices can impact a movie. First, we wanted to know if they've ever been distracted by miscast actors. "The Sun is Also a Star, which starred Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton, is one movie that really stands out to me for its bad casting choices," the site's representative told Bored Panda. "The female lead in the movie is a Jamaican girl from New York, and her whole family is dark-skinned and Jamaican. Yara Shahidi, on the other hand, is light-skinned, half-black, half-Iranian, with no Jamaican in sight, and it definitely hindered the authenticity that this film requires. Shahidi didn't present any Jamaican or New York culture. She was just reciting a script, not becoming a character."
"There is one scene where her character is recommended to chemically straighten her hair. As a black woman, this scene comes off as extremely unrealistic, since Shahidi would be considered to have 'good hair' in the black community," the cinephile went on to explain. "A dark-skinned woman with kinkier hair would have been more affected by this comment, but Shahidi was able to laugh it off. Moments like that which could have had a deeper cultural impact were missed opportunities because the actors chosen were not fit to embody those roles. I feel as though casting a full Korean character and a dark-skinned Jamaican character with beautiful tight-coiled Type 4 hair would have the potential to make this film more authentic and something people can actually relate to. Instead of the heartwarming story that this movie could've been, it rather resembled a superficial display of pretty people, not real characters."
ok, I'm bending the question a bit here, because The World is Not Enough still wouldn't be a good movie, but:
Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist is just the worst, y'all
Never saw this movie, but I am laughing so hard at this entire concept.
Also because she would be too young to be an expert in nuclear energy, especially considering how few nuclear power plantsthere are, even in the 90s. This is a common issue with most T.V. and movies. Early to mid 20 something people being experts in their field.
Load More Replies...“I wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw Denise Richards again.”
Just 10 minutes ago, I was thinking about that specific thing. Thanks internet and OP.

Jared Leto as Joker
*he was big miscast for the joker ... but im not so sure bout the part:"in an otherwise good movie"
Heath Ledger IS the Joker, as far as I'm concerned. His performance was mind blowing! Although I have to say that Joaquin Phoenix's performance was a worthy successor.
damn you made me look that up and once I saw the pictures I immediately remembered that. It seriously looks like a cult
Load More Replies...i'm gonna get hate for this, but in his defense: 80% of his his screentime was cut out in post production. he did a diffrent joker (because the director and the script wanted it that way) and then a lot of his lines and screentime got erased. of course his joker is worse. and everybody is comparing him to heath the legend ledger! leto had no chance as Joker...
He himself thought he was amazing, to the point of trying to block the Joker movie from being released (he didn't want it to overshadow him). He created such a toxic atmosphere on set that a lot of the cast refuse to work with him anymore. Yes blame the script and editing to a certain point, but a lot of the hate towards him is justified.
Load More Replies...The movie wasn't that great either, so at least he didn't ruin it all by himself
I don't agree with all the comments that say he's bad in every movie, I really liked him in Mr.Nobody !
Jack Nicholson as the Joker is my favourite. He just has that funny psychosis aura to him.
Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.
Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, and just about everyone else turned in outstanding performances, but Costner... Still a good movie though.
Everything about this movie is wrong. Robin and Azeem land in Dover Robin says it will only take till nightfall to walk to his father's castle in loxley. From Dover to loxley takes 5 hours in a car and they were on foot. And then they went via Hadrian's wall which is 300 miles out of their way. I know compared to America England is tiny but come on!
Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent -Robin Hood: Men in Tights ( the far superior Robin Hood movie)
Better than the most recent version. Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman made the movie for me.
Load More Replies...This was the first film in which I found Kevin Costner embarrassing. Many more would follow. I saw this film in the theatres when I was about 13, and I remember having a huge crush on Christian Slater, though.
He was supposed to have a speaking role in "The Big Chill" but he ended up playing a corpse. Good call by the director since its all downhill once he opens his mouth
Robin Hood movies are like pizza. When they're good...they're great! When they're bad...they're still pretty good.
Looking back at it now, there is so much that is wrong with the movie. For example, I was surprised and aghast to see the PICTS as the additional bad guys. There is an attempted rape scene in the film which I think is made to be comic. Everyone's horrific accent, particularly Kevin Costner. However, Christian Slater would have been a fine Robin Hood, BTW.
"Good casting can make or break a movie for sure," the person behind IMO Flicks noted. "Having solid characters that feel real, and make you feel, pity, empathy, anger, anything; characters that make you believe they're real is the difference between watching National Geographic and watching a movie. How many people would pay to watch the latest nature documentary in theatres versus how many people would pay to watch Chris Evan's latest movie without even knowing what the plot is about? The difference is the people, the characters, and the connection."
"There's this show I've been loving lately called Jury Duty on Freevee where showrunners cast one person, Ronald Gladden, off of Craigslist to take part in a fake trial where everyone else was actors," the cinephile continued. "The whole show relied on how cooperative, expressive, and involved this one person was. By the end of the season, I couldn't help but think how lucky the showrunners were in picking the perfect person as their subject because the success of the whole show relied solely on Gladden's reaction to the wild situations he was put in, and he didn't disappoint."
Batman vs Supeeman wasn’t a very good movie but it is nothing compared to the casting of Lex Luthor in the movie. Jesse Eisenberg can be a good actor but the chosen direction on Lex is a complete oposite of where Jesse shines as an actor. I have a hard time thinking about a worse actor for the role. Maybe Michael Cera.
Jesse eisenberg is not a good actor to start with. He has only one way of acting and does it bad.
He comes off as a pretentious type who thinks he is too good for every movie he stars in.
Load More Replies...I think Jesse Eisenberg is fine as a comedic actor (mostly for Zombieland), but I think they dropped the ball hard for Lex Luthor. Too manic in his portrayal, and like many said, he seemed like he would have been a better Riddler.
Absolutely, I could even see him making a decent Joker. But Lex Luthor is a ruthless genius. While he does go right off the rails in the comics, it shouldn't happen in the span of a single movie. I do place the blame more on the writer and director than the actor though. He's working based on their script and direction.
Load More Replies...Jesse is Michael Cera from 10 years in the future.
Load More Replies...This blew my mind. He just was NOT believable at all as a Lex Luthor.
Captain Correli's Mandolin could be a beautiful movie, if it wasn't for Nick Cage.
Never seen it. But the same thing can be said about a lot of films that have Nick Cage in them. I don't know what it is about him, but I really can't stand him as an actor.
One of the best books in the history of ever. Read it today, thank me later.
I personally like the book better than the movie. But , that's just me.

George Clooney as batman
Say what you want about these movies, but they perfectly captured the cheesiness of the Adam West TV show. I think the issue was that people were expecting Tim Burton and didn't want any silliness. Brilliant idea, bad marketing.
Nah. He was a good piece of casting let down by a terrible script.
I think he was a fine cast in a terrible movie. (But still it is so trashy it is fun!)
Goerge Cloony has admitted that he screwed up by trying to play Batman as a gay man, without anyone asking him to. Seriously, look it up - he answered interview questions about it.
Because the power of casting is so strong, we also asked the film expert if there were any mediocre movies or shows that were enhanced by excellent casting choices. "The series Wednesday would be an average show lost in the noise if it wasn't for Jenna Ortega," she explained. "She truly understood who her character was and pushed the envelope to make the appropriate changes to the script. The acting across the board for other characters tended to dip into 'Disney Channel original movie' energy, but she elevated the quality of the whole narrative by being very intentional, tasteful, consistent, and believable in how her character presented herself."
Absolutely Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I love the man, but that accent is something else. If he hadn’t been in the film I’m almost certain there’d be no debate that this was the best and most faithful Dracula adaptation.
Her attempted accent makes me cringe every time. Everyone else does really well
Load More Replies...Keeanu remains in the sideline here, doesn't matter at all. The movie is genius, Oldman is genius, Copola is genius.
Truth is that celebrity sells. American celebrity sells more. OK yes a British celebrity adopted by America as one of their own will also do. But a really good actor does not sell movies, a really famous actor does. A really famous actor in a really famous franchise sells more. So here we are stuck with Marvel, Fast and Furious, DC, and more repeats of the same plot.
Him and George Hamilton...."Children of the night....SHUT UP!"
Load More Replies...I thought he was quite good, since Jonathan is a stiff in the book as well..
Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts Franchise.
He just doesn't belong there.
His acting is good, he nailed his speech in the second film. But no Potter World Material.
No matter how much I adore Johnny Depp he was so wrong in Fantastic beasts
Agreed. Although I’m not a huge fan of the replacement either.
Load More Replies...I don't know, when I see Johnny Depp it is always the same energy. Then you are not really a good actor right? Just being yourself....
Or you know, they're looking for an actor to play that type of character, he's done it before so proven expertise. Typecasting can suck for actors.
Load More Replies...It was the guy from the 3rd movie that ruined it 😭 (edit I looked it up his name is Mads Mikkelsen)
I love Johnny Depp. He's one of my favorite actors. But he really doesn't fit into Potterworld. Still really hate that so far he's not going to return to Pirates. He made those movies.
Madds was an excellent casting choice he's uch better suited for that part. I love Depp but not in this movie
I deadass didn't even know that was Johny Depp. He disappeared into the role, but not necessarily in a good way.
recently finished Queen’s Gambit and thought it was great but I could not take the baby cowboy seriously
I couldn’t concur more. This choice of actor was an absolute disaster.
Oh, I loved him, but probably because he was the little boy in "Love Actually."
That poor guy is trying so hard to be taken seriously as an adult, but still looks like he's too young to shave.
We were also curious if the IMO Flicks expert could cite some of the most common mistakes casting directors make when choosing their actors. "One mistake I sometimes notice is that you may have two individuals who are great actors on their own, but when they work together, there is no chemistry there," she told Bored Panda. "I don't know if casting directors are skipping chemistry reads or if a good chemistry read was unable to transfer to the screen, but the main characters have to have a real connection or at least be really good at faking it."
"Another mistake would be to cast a popular name over someone who may not be so popular but has all of the tools needed to make a character believable," the cinephile continued. "Anyone would watch any movie with their favorite actor, so that's instant money in the creator's hands just to have a big name attached to their movie. The issue though is that the attention for the film is short-lived if the actor is not a good fit for the role. It's risky to present a movie with a not-so-familiar name, however, some truly amazing stories will pay off that risk. Oftentimes, it feels as though some movie creators will try to compensate for a bad story by casting big names, instead of fleshing out believable characters and a story that people can connect with."
Guy Pearce in Prometheus. Like good god why didn’t they just cast an older actor??
Because he also appeared in Prometheus as his younger self. So what do you do? Hire two actors of different ages? Digitally de-age an older actor (Wasn't great at the time) or just old guy makeup on the younger actor?
I think there was meant to be much more of him as a younger man when they started out too but it got cut.
Load More Replies...Yes that was so weird and didnt add anything. Prometheus was such a dumb movie. Like the village idiot trying to come of as smart by dressing up in a fancy look but as soon as he speaks or do something you first start thinking "What is he doing?? Am I too dumb to get it or..." but then reality sets in "ohh I get it... He's an idiot".
I think the concept of Prometheus was smart and interesting but the movie itself was a let down because it was full of (supposedly) smart people doing dumb things. The scientists are the dumbest people ever. Land on a new potentially hostile world, immediately take of helmets and start poking the native wildlife with their fingers. The second major problem with the movie was the fact everyone wanted more "Alien" not existential drama.
Load More Replies..."Prometheus" was a terrible movie and had the same issue (why not use an older actor) but he appeared as his younger self in "Alien: Covenant" (which I never saw).
I know people here LOVE Adam Driver, but I found him to be extremely distracting in SW. he looks nothing like Ford or Fisher. More importantly he just looks weird (or unique depending on your perspective). I know it’s probably taboo to say this, but his nose was really distracting to look at, especially in RoS, where there’s a lot of his profile shots.
I know I’ll be downvotes, but I thought I’d share anyway.
I didn't understand the swooning people were doing over him, but he is a talented actor.
I disagree. Luke's comment about wanting to go into Toshi station was better acting than anything Driver did in 3 Star Wars movies. He was bad in "Girls" and never got better. Each movie I'd head to the theater thinking "Driver can't be as bad as last time I saw him." Every time I was wrong. He somehow managed to ruin scenes with Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford is so good a co-star that he got Melanie Griffith an Oscar nomination for "Working Girl".
Load More Replies...Yeah, it's weird the way they build up to the helmet removal and you just *know* they'll have cast someone gorgeous to mess with expectations, but the hat comes off and it's this adolescent emo weasel.
I thought he played the part well but there is no way the offspring of Leia and Han looks like that. I know movies often ask the audience just to ignore certain things in the name of creative licence, but this was a biiiiiiig ask.
I find him attractive, but I don't care for cookie-cutter actors.
Cameron Diaz in gangs of New York. Anytime I start watching that movie I always forget that she’s in it and then she pops up on screen and I just get disappointed.
I dunno about this one. Her character needed that charismatic, chaotic, slightly trashy energy that Cameron Diaz can bring. Thinking back to 2002, I’m not sure who else would have fit.
Charismatic, chaotic, slightly trashy, same age group - Juliette Lewis comes to mind. Heather Graham. (Maybe Mary Louise Parker or Jennifer Jason Leigh, but in 2002, they were perhaps too old for the role). Anyway, they needed an actress who could play along Leonoardo DiCaprio, and Cameron Diaz was not a good fit.
Load More Replies...With a lot of films, some of them are in this list, people are hired for their bankability, not for their acting chops. Sometimes not even for their looks.
Honestly, I’m not a hater I do love her in certain movies but for most of her roles she’s just terrible.
Good memory, the OP. How many times did that happen? About twenty times, I suppose.
"Movies are make-believe," the film expert added. "If the people being cast are not making you believe the story that they're telling, then it's really difficult to become invested in a movie and to actually enjoy it. Great casting is essential to a great movie."
If you'd like to hear more of this cinephile's thoughts or learn how to start writing reviews of your own, be sure to check out IMO Flicks' website right here!
Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch in Oz the Great and Powerful.
Actors are hired for their bankability. Unfortunately, suitability for a role is usually a very minor factor in the film producers' eyes.
That's oftentimes what happens with big films. A notable name they can put on a poster/social media post, but not necessarily the right actor for the role.
Load More Replies...In the original masterpiece from 1939, Margaret Hamilton was cast after the original choice was deemed too attractive and likable. The producers wanted a witch, and they found one in Hamilton, a schoolteacher for whom acting was a sideline. Hamilton's performance as the Wicked Witch still ranks in the Top 5 best movie villains on most lists.
Yeah. Mila Kunis is great but my god, I hated her and James Franco in this movie.
Definitely agree with this. I saw this in the theater. There was a scene where she was speaking off screen and some dude shouted "shut up, Meg". Got too distracted after that lol

Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Cara delevingne is a scam and an enigma. How did she get there without a single drop of talent in anything?
She comes from an immensely well-connected, privileged family. Think Paris Hilton - "Daddy, I'm bored, I want to be a photo model and an actress and a star."
Load More Replies...Yeah the whole time I thought they were brother and sister ..... terrible chemistry
My impression is that they were way to young for the roles to really fit in. They look like 17 year olds while having high officer ranks already
The thing is DeHaan was about 30 at the time he's just really young looking. Even Delevingne was mid 20s. I wasn't worried about their appearance (advanced sci-fi future why couldn't you maintain youthful looks for longer?). I was disappointed with their lack of chemistry.

Andie McDowell just seems so out of place in *Four Weddings and a Funeral*.
Mickey Rooney in *Breakfast at Tiffany's*? What the hell was that?
Oh, Mickey Rooney and his racist-as-hell caricature Mr. Yunioshi "Missus Golightly! I mushh PRO-TESHT!" His scenes are cringy and take you out of the movie.
Sadly, it was a different time. Those scenes was deliberately created that way - for laughs. Because mocking Asians was considered funny and acceptable. And Rooney wasn't doing anything wrong by accepting such a role by the standards of the day. It wasn't even really seen as racist. It was considered a "comedic role". We look back now in horror, but our parents and grandparents laughed at every scene.
Load More Replies...Andie McDowell is terrible in FWAAF. Give her a shampoo commercial with no lines.
It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I don't remember the character being a s**t actress.
Load More Replies...I always have issues with people who play a different ethnicity than they are. Mickey Rooney is a great example of of damaging stereotyping of a different ethnic group (as well as a lot of older Disney films and their more... problematic characters). Another older one I can think of from older movies is John Wayne as Temujin/Genghis Khan in The Conqueror, or the entire cast of The Last Airbender (though it was a really bad movie).
John Wayne is s**t is any role irrespective of the ethnicity.

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Katie Holmes in Batman Begins
Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle
Les Mis movie is one of the worst musical adaptations I've seen, they slaughtered a masterpiece – though to be fair the fault lies mostly with the director in this case.
It's simple - if you adapt a musical, you hire people who can sing PERFECTLY. That's why theatre musical fans are usually disappointed with the movies.
and that's why I try to stick to watching the musicals on YouTube. Sadly illegal to have them up there, but they're good. But funny enough I really like all of the musicals that I've seen that were actually based off of movies. That's newsies, legally blonde (which I actually got to see live last month), and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. And I wasn't too disappointed about Into the Woods, but I also watched the play in my theatre class, so I had already seen the movie. It's a little sad that they took out a few of my favorite lines, and I didn't really like the princes as much, but I liked seeing more detail of Rapunzel (I wanted to add that the Seussical was also weirdly good and hilarious. It brings some of Dr Seuss' good books together into a musical as one story. This one guy is literally dressed up as the Grinch the whole time and he only says one or two lines lol)
Load More Replies...Controversial opinion. I liked him in les mis.. I even liked his version of stars.. its rougher but also sung softer and I think that suits the character and the song more
I agree. I much preferred his singing to most of the others. He performed it and got the emotions which is the important thing!
Load More Replies...Mr Crowe just doesn't have a powerful enough voice for Javert. At least compared to the rest of the cast. Had it not been a musical, he would have been perfectly cast - his pipes just don't have the calibre to go against Mr Jackson.
At least he does actually sing and has (had?) a band he was frontman for.
Load More Replies...I wish Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams would have switched roles in American Hustle. Jennifer was awesome but too young for that role.
Absolutely. Unconvincing as a housewife. Also was Amy Adams supposed to be doing an English accent? If so it was a major fail
Load More Replies...His acting wasn’t bad, but who thought it was a good idea to have him sing?
Ruby Rose, in anything she has ever appeared in.
she was in pitch perfect 3 and the attitude she played worked perfectly.
I honestly loved her in Batwoman. She wasn't too bad in XXX return of Xander cage either.
Adrien Brody Predators, not as good as the first 2 films but a decent sequel i find entertaining. I just dont buy him as the badass action star that goes toe to toe with a Predator
My brother plays piano. Is also a Marine. And looks like (and is) a kind of nerdy, slightly shy, self deprecating father of five...until he puts on a uniform and is all ready to be the guy in the lead vehicle with the machine gun, trying to be sure he sees EVERYTHING while escorting your supply convoy down a road that has almost certainly been mined. In real life, some pretty hardcore books have fairly low key covers.
Load More Replies...Have to disagree, I thought he was great in the film. And I love that film. Alice Bragga was also fantastic.
He's another one whose appeal I just don't get. He's a decent actor, but most definitely NOT an action star or romantic lead.
I have to disagree. I found that role believable. For too many years Hollywood has hired male leads with really well-built, overly muscular bodies and made us believe that elite soldiers and the like looks like that. They usually don't in reality. - And I'm tired of actors who look like they were cast in the same mold. But each to their own, I guess. 🤷
Load More Replies...Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3. I really believe it would’ve been much better if Tom Hardy was given Venom.
Sofia Coppola in Godfather Part 3. Broke the movie in a few scenes
So good she was able to bounce back from the drubbing she received in that and become an accomplished director instead
She was AWFUL! Talk about a wooden performance. Thank God she took the opportunity to get behind the camera instead.
She was in the movie because her brother had just died and her father was grieving so he asked her to be in it.
Ben Affleck in Daredevil.... He's a great actor, the role sucked, the movie was fun to watch though.
Just Ben Affleck in general. I think the only thing I ever liked him in was Dogma. Which that perv Weinstein owns the rights to and won''t sell it back to Kevin Smith for less than an obscene amount of money..
He was decent in Gold Will Hunting. But Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Robin Williams definitely stole the show with their performances.
Load More Replies...I'd agree with that. I feel like he's a better actor than that film showcased. People who call him a bad actor seem to forget Argo and Gone Girl. And heck he churned out a bunch of action flicks that while not Oscar material were certainly better than Daredevil.
Load More Replies...I never what's anything with him in it, just don't get the guy.
I find him so disagreeable in everything I’ve seen….now just try to avoid having to see any of his work.
Just about everyone in Batman and Robin. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze is probably top of the list though. As someone who grew up on Batman: The Animated Series and was blown away by Heart of Ice I couldn't wait for a big screen version. Then we got, well, what we got. Just imagine what a late 90s Patrick Stewart could have done in that role. With a completely different script and director of course.
This was glorious camp and should never be compared to The Animated Series. Apples to oranges.
Can’t believe John Wayne as the Centurion didn’t top the list. Oh yeah. It wasn’t an otherwise good movie.
And it's old, so not many have seen it. I must say that it was visually gorgeous, but so stultifyingly reverent as to be unwatchable.
Load More Replies...To me, this movie is the only one that captures the pure camp of the Adam West era.
Schwarzenegger was PERFECT for the role if he had just played it like the terminator. The problem is he didn't
They were still making a camp movie, like the tv series. Even the Burton films were bad. It just took a long time to get away from the campy stuff.
Brad Pitt in Troy. He's not terrible or anything. It's just funny to listen to him attempt to dial in a british accent. Or better yet, the guy who plays his cousin is really corny. Fun movie, fun cast when it comes down to it. I just roll my eyes every time he shows up lol
A lot was wrong with that film. But it was meant to be purely entertaining, and never claimed to be fully accurate to its source material. Brad Pitt was one of the most bankable actors at the time, so there you go. For example, I was quite disappointed that they did not integrate a small role for Cassandra.
Very little accuracy in any movies, from Hollywood.
Load More Replies...Have to disagree and Troy was a Greek legend not Brittish so wtf with that comment?..
I think that was the point of the comment. Brad Pitt was an American pretending to be British in a film about a Greek. It's laughable. I don't think the comment was claiming Troy was British.
Load More Replies...I think I'd disagree on that one: he is one of the few things that were good about the movie. That's what a hero, in original sense of the word, would look like to our contemporary: a massive drama queen good at murder. I would love to see Sean Bean as Odysseus (in Odyssey), he somehow looked the part
That's what I came to say! And Sean Bean wouldn't die in the sequel.
Load More Replies...Unpopular opinion but I thought Brad Pitt did a masterful job playing Achilles. The Iliad I was first introduced to starts "Hear now of the rage of Achilles" and the point of the story is a petulant pretty boy half god essentially destroys everything good in the world because he keeps throwing tantrums. His very name means "pain". Pitt played that perfectly. On his bad accent - Agamemnon and Odysseus both mock his speech in The Iliad.
Pitts acting and films direction were cool watch and really over the top.
This movie was just meh. My only favorite part was when Glaucus rallied his remaining soldiers to fight their last battle against the Greeks.
Why would he be "dialing in" a British accent when he is playing a Greek. What do you think every period movie piece should be actors with a British accent? What you should think is funny is that all the other British actors don't sound Greek, and didn't even bother.
Whatever horrific creature they got to dub the voice of Bob in Lucio Fulci's House By the Cemetery.
Topher Grace as Venom.
Russell Crowe in the 2011 Robin Hood movie.

Ezra Miller as The Flash.
Betsy Russell as Jill Tuck.
Matthew Broderick as Simba. (Never thought his voice fit the character IMO. Even when I was a kid, I never heard "Simba" - I only ever heard an actor trying to play "Simba".)
I will never understand why WB let go of Johnny for the "allegations" that weren't even true, yet they keep Ezra miller after that bastard has literally been on a crime spree beating people up, grooming kids, etc, and there's proof of it because he literally taunted the police. WTF.
Because Ezra Miller has pronouns to hide behind.
Load More Replies...I think Grant Gustin would have been a better fit for the Flash movie, he's done great on the TV show, just bad writing and direction.
THANK YOU grant would have been perfect as the flash
Load More Replies...I totally agree with Topher Grace. As a Spidey fan, Venom is supposed to be the antithesis of Spider-Man. I said this as a joke much later after the movie came out, but if you would have had any massive pro-wrestler, someone like Brock Lesnar or John Cena (who could pass for Eddie Brock), then you'd have a more convincing Venom in terms of physicality. I really like how Tom Hardy portrayed them.
I didn't like the casting even before they showed the world how unstable they were.
Load More Replies...It was an adult woman who was hired to dub "Bob" in English. The actual male child actor is now good-humored and apologetic about it when he makes any appearances at the film's revival screenings--he knows everybody HATES that voice.
I agree with all this, except for Russell Crowe. I loved him in that Robin Hood movie.
Matthew Broderick in The Music Man. After Robert Preston's flawless talent and energy in the original movie musical, Broderick was completely lost in the role. It was like he didn't even know why he was there. The immensely talented Jason Alexander would have nailed it!
Jack Black in The Holiday. It would’ve been an okay romcom with someone else but he just stood out like a sore thumb. If he would’ve been funny it might’ve worked, but it was like they made him a neutered version of himself.
I did too. He was such an opposite personality to Rufus Sewell, which he really needed to be so Winslet’s character could break out of the stupid cycle she was in. Honestly, I had more issues with the dynamic between Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, but wouldn’t have recast them.
Load More Replies...Without a doubt, the MOST talented people in Hollywood are Jack Black and Adam Sandler's agents. The way they churn out rubbish and still find work is remarkable.
I loved jack black in this film in fact I totally fell in love with him in this film.
Literally anything Jack Black is in, he is just the same in everything he does, and that isn't a good thing
Enjoyed Jack Black, really didn't like Cameron Diaz in her role, oddly enough to me she felt like the one over-acting...
I think part of it was the scripting and directorial choices. She wore high heels walking AND RUNNING in the UK countryside, she still had her bra on in post-coital scenes, and the crying thing ... they were all sooooo cheesy.
Load More Replies...Yes!! Love, love Jack Black as a person but I have the same problem with this film. Kate Winslet is just way out of his league even with the best of circumstances. As cool as he is in the film it just felt unrealistic. Heck, even the girl who cheated on him is out of his league. He was perfect for School of Rock, not for a romcom.
NPH in Gone Girl is always my go to
I thought he was fine. Just another poor sod who trusted that psycho nut. (If the reference is to him being gay, boy you are not ready to watch any mini-series that had Richard Chamberlain in it.)
True! Plenty of gay men and women have played straight characters and vice versa with straights playing queer. But the OP in a later post said it was because they thought he was wooden and not very good in the role.
Load More Replies...I agree with this one. I read the book of “Gone Girl,” and the character he played (whose name I forget) was so much more gullible & easily manipulated & just blindly taken in by Amy for many years. NPH is, and was in the movie, just too cool & sophisticated & smart to have fallen for her schtick.
I still have not seen the movie. I just don't want to be disappointed by it.
Unpopular opinion: Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate.
Now, of course he was brilliant - made his name in that movie. And he made the movie with his performance.
But that character was supposed to be a WASP college athlete - handsome & vigorous, which is why Mrs Robinson wanted to get him in the sack. DH was none of those things.
The role should have gone to Richard Benjamin (who appeared in a minor part in the movie), but it would have been a forgettable romcom. DH made it a classic.
I think the OP meant that Hoffman made it a classic despite being miscast. That can happen if the actor is good enough.
Load More Replies...Getting an athlete into the sack was not the point. Wasn't Mrs. Robinson doing that to keep the graduate away from her daughter? Maybe I missed something.
He had no facial expressions in this film and no inflection in his voice don't understand how he got other jobs off of the back of this movie.
Robert Redford actually tried out, but the director said he couldn't imagine any woman rejecting him.
Richard Benjamin wasn't in The Graduate. You're thinking of Richard Dreyfuss who appears and speaks for about three seconds.
Emma Watson as belle
Yeah I have no idea what they’re talking about. Emma Watson is the BEST and she was amazing in this.
Load More Replies...Emma was amazing in that role!!! Especially in the yellow dress, some outfits don't suit the actors that wear them, but oh my god the yellow-gold looked so pretty on her <3
Load More Replies...I did like her though. And people remember her as the smart one from Harry Potter, and Belle was a smart girl (or is presented as a smart girl). So there is a lot of association already with her character.
Her acting wasn't the issue, she was good in this sense. The issue was her voice being horrificly autotuned in post production. Totally not her fault.
Perhaps, but people who sing on key usually aren't auto tuned that badly.
Load More Replies...Just feels a little weird to imagine Emma Watson as Belle. But she really handles the character well.
Double comment! Didn’t know that was possible
Load More Replies...As much as I love Emma Watson they just shouldn't have made that movie
And now after years of this s**t we have a Flounder that looks like he's having an existential crisis. Disney, please take these actors you hiring and make a new damn movie mkay? Sorry I had to rant
Load More Replies...YOU ARE WRONG just mimicking critics! Emma Watson was AMAZING as Belle and that whole movie was the best Disney live action ever made. It's my FAVORITE second to the cartoon even. The whole cast was amazing
Beyonce in Austin Powers Goldmember.
ALL the acting was intentionally bad in the Austin Powers movies. That was part of the joke
Beyoncé in anything. She has detracted form every movie she has been in.
Jake Gyllenhall in Okja
“Okja” was a science-fiction adventure when it was released in June 2017, but two years later it would chillingly reflect the real world. https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/okja-real-china-breeding-giant-pigs-meat-1202179358/
Load More Replies...Jessica Chastain in x-men dark Phoenix
Anyone outside of the original cast of the first two X-Men movies were terrible choices. Who the hell looked at Nicholas Hoult and said "This kid would make a great Beast"?
I remember that movie. It was so terrible, I genuinely almost walked out of the cinema. Not even McAvoy & Fassbender could save it, and I love them both so much.
I think Elizabeth Banks was the wrong choice for Zack and Miri Make a Porno. She’s just so gorgeous it’s a little hard for her to really pull off the forever single one-of-the-guys type
You can be pretty, long-term single and get along platonically with men all at the same time (one of the guys as a saying should be banned). Elizabeth Banks was perfect for this film.
I hate that phrase too. It makes the girls seem like they have internalized misogny with that. And movies almost never have the genders reversed for that.
Load More Replies...Strongly disagree. She was great as Miri, great as Beth in 40-Year-Old Virgin, and people seemed to like her role as Fetty Wap in Hunger Games. Now, Rita Repulsa on the other hand...
Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. I love him and his performance, but anyone who has read the comic can tell you that Scott Pilgrim is nothing like his movie counterpart. He's more of a himbo with no shame than an awkward shy nerd.
Have you read the comic? And if so do you think the characterisation is the same? I haven't read it so can't comment, just going on the OPs post.
Load More Replies...Edgar Wright makes AWESOME and fun movies. Michael Cera worked well for Wright's film version of the comics. Hell, I didn't even know it was based on a comic until after
I wished it would had been done as a mini series instead of a movie. Give each of the ex's a longer backstory and more scenes during the interaction and battle. That film rushed a lot of the battles. I wanted to see so much more of Chris Evans because he was hilarious in it.
I don't like him in any movie. The one I thought I did was not him but Eisenberg
Any film where a North American actor plays a British person and can't do the accent. Britain has many different accents so it's annoying when American actors immediately try to play the role with a sterotypical 'cor blimey guv'ner' type accent. No one talks like that anywhere in Britain. Not even in East London. Stop it. Just no. Don Cheadle in Ocean's. D**k Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. We've already had Keanu. Some American actors can do good British accents. Renee Zellwegger in Bridget Jones, for example. Our accent is a big part of our identity in the UK and are important to us, because as I said our accents differ so much in such a small area. I'm from Birmingham but my accent is very different from say Liverpool, but they're just a couple of hours drive from each other.
Any actor that can't do the accent. Why not just hire a local actor? (I know, bankability over authenticity....) For example, there are dozens of web pages about the best and worst fake Irish accent in a film.
I see your Irish accent and raise you New Orleans accent. It's bad.
Load More Replies...A great B-movie with unusual casting: Highlander. I'm not really bitching about the casting, because they were iconic in those roles, but really they had Christopher Lambert, a French actor, play an immortal Scotsman and he could barely speak English. They had Sean Connery, the most famous Scotsman, play 'not a Scotsman'. He was supposed to play a nomadic Egyption/Spanish/Persian mercenary that was definitely 'not a Scotsman' in a movie about an immortal Scotsman. And Clancy Brown (excellent) an American, play a Romanian/Russian/Slavic warrior. I have no idea what his accent was supposed to be except for growling while talking.
The last time I saw that film, I wondered about the skull the Kurgan is wearing. What kind of animal is that supposed to be? Apparently, a sort of cave bear, cave lion (???). The Kurgan doesn't have a backstory, but apparently he was meant to be many thousands of years old. He does not have a name either. A kurgan is actually a prehistoric barrow created by unspecified Eurasian Bronze Age people (Scythian, Thrakian,... theories abound).
Load More Replies...Glen Close in Fatal Attraction. She was supposed to be some sort of sex bomb. Instead, she was as if Mrs. Doubtfire became anorexic. Same probably goes for Dangerous Liaisons, but I didn't watch that movie.
He lost the plot years ago ... see his comments about gay marriage.
Load More Replies...Anyone in the movie Eragon. Amazing book, absolutely horrible movie. The acting was terrible, a lot of the movie never actually happened in the book, and they gave Saphira feathers instead of wing membranes, despite there being a whole sentence about her wing membranes.
Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross. I love Morgan, but anyone familiar with the book series knows he was way too old. In the books those movies were based on, Cross wasn't even 40 years old.
yes thank you i havent watched the movies but from the pictures of it online i can tell he doesnt look like Cross
Load More Replies...Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, a character that is supposed to be 6 feet 5 inches and muscular. And Tom Cruise in The Mummy, as a Sergeant in the army who breaks rules and steals things - a character that doesn’t suit Tom Cruise’s acting style at all and might have been believable if played by a 30 year old (an older Sergeant would have been dishonourably discharged years ago). Plus he made creative decisions that ruined the film and got paid a ridiculous amount. Bad casting.
