We’ve all got pet peeves. Some people will smack anyone who starts chewing with their mouth open, and others might already be on their way home if a date shows up 5 minutes late. But there are also plenty of things people can say to make their potential friendships instantly go up in flames.

Someone recently asked Reddit users to share words and phrases that alert them that they won't like a person, and readers did not hold back. Below, you’ll find a variety of statements that people can't stand, so enjoy learning what not to say upon meeting someone, and be sure to upvote the phrases that you consider to be red flags as well!

“What Words/Phrases Do You Hear Someone Say And Immediately Know You’re Probably Not Going To Like The Person?” (50 Answers) Anything that involves "god's will"

As a Christian (lol considering this article's title), I've always hated the use of that phrase. I do believe in God's will, but it shouldn't be used as a replacement for loving and serving a person, and definitely not as an excuse that a person "got what they deserved". God's will could be many things but it will always involve loving and caring for other human beings (and yourself)

Eh, only sometimes. Inflated Ego is a huge problem amongst people who have hyped themselves up as Logic and Reasoning's Gift to Humanity. Additionally, there's plenty of people who have taken official IQ tests, scored highly, and are still pretty stupid in practice. IQ tests focus on a very narrow set of skills and are pretty biased against non W.E.I.R.D. people even if you accept them as a measure OF said skills, so relying heavily on them for anything is shaky at best and. Well. Downright stupid at worst.

A high IQ doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart. Also, IQ can (and does) fluctuate. IQ refers to your ability to learn, retain and USE information, be able to apply what you have learned/know.

I find it super difficult, all this IQ-stuff. I have always considered myself as a bit stupid since I am very awkward socially but online and in letters I think I seem like a cool enough person. And it's like I can't function as a regular person. I honestly thought I was a bit stupid somehow. Then about a year ago I am undergoing some psychiatric examination. And it bleeping turns out I am a gifted person that has autistic traits (but I am not actually on the spectrum). When I learned this I began to cry. It was just such a shock to me! And now when I try to talk with people about how I am having a high IQ I feel like all my words come out in a sort of "I think I'm better than you"-way and I truly do not want it to be like that. How can I talk to people about being gifted and how weird it makes me compared to others? I just wish I was not neurodiverse. Or that someone had figured it out when I was a kid instead of when I was 38. 😕

A high IQ doesn't really say much about how smart a person is or how smart the person acts anyway, it's a just a pretty specific theoretical number. I have a relatively high IQ but am not smart at all. 🤷

Achieving high score on a standard IQ test may well be a good indication of cognitive abilities, but it won't ever stop someone from talking nonsense or knowing next to none about a topic. In such topics they are clueless regardless of any fancy test results.

I thought I was okay smart and then one day at work when I was bored, I took an online IQ test and I was apparently just average that day. Oh well. I just hope I don’t bump into too many walls during the course of a day. On the other hand, my husband told me recently that when he was in college, a random professor in some class unrelated to psychology (which I have a degree in), gave them all IQ tests and he was labelled a “dullard,” and that has stuck with him for 30 odd years, colouring his view of himself and his self-esteem. I told him that was purée nonsense (okay that was autocorrect but it’s funny so I’m leaving it), and that unqualified teacher had no business administering IQ tests and telling the kids they weren’t very smart. Irresponsibe!

I do have a relatively highish iq, but I also know that it’s not the best way to determine intelligence. I’m dumb at a lot of things 😂

I've only took that dumb-a*s (for fun, not an official one) test once and I got a good score, but I don't brag because it's a shïtty thing to do. I know someone who brags and they're a extreme bicharse. (I've just realised the irony of this comment lol)

Thing is, traditional IQ test are biased against anyone who didn’t have at least a white upper middle class upbringing, as a large number of questions require experience in that kind of environment. That renders the tests useless for accurately assessing everyone’s intelligence.

Hence the low IQs of folks landing on Ellis Island (former immigration centre in New York).

The thing is, many people who have a very high IQ have a equally low EQ, or emotional quotient. They don’t exactly know how to respond in specific situations.

The problem is that it's one of those things you just can't say about yourself with sounding deluded/dishonest. It drives me crazy that I can't tell people. People are often blown away by my intelligence/insight, it's generally one of the first things people noticed about me, and it's always the first thing people use to describe me. Yet even in writing this I know it sounds like I'm just delusional, because I know I can never say it about myself. 😮‍💨 I would love to be able to show it on a dating app or in a job interview and save people the trouble.

Yeah, but my IQ is 130, so I have the right to say this stuff. (The only thing that says my IQ is 130 is a random test I took on the internet. I also took one that said I had 106, so I don't know what to believe.)

Internet tests are great for two things: figuring out if you're any good at things like anagrams, and giving to moderately competent children (if they score by age) with the express intent of tormenting any adults who decide to take the tests seriously.

Anyone older who says "back in my day...you younger people don't know what hard work is..." Anything like that as if they couldn't buy a house on minimum wage and go to college without crippling debt. I personally graduated debt free thanks to scholarships but the older generations seem to not understand the wage/cost disparity between their generation and younger generations.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." ... according to Socrates, who lived between 469 and 399 B.C. (before Christ = before year "0"). When used mockingly, it is okay. The world is changing so fast, so every young generation faces new struggles that should be taken seriously by the more experienced generations.

For me it’s not words or phrases. It’s tone. If they sound stressed or panicked or impatient over a small issue, I immediately know they’re a chore to deal with. For example, you toss trash in the bin, miss. Go to pick it up, and they jump on you for littering.
