While not everyone is cut out to be a doctor, millions of people around the world are happy to live vicariously through the lives of doctors and nurses by binge-watching medical dramas. “Grey’s Anatomy” has clocked over 3.2 billion hours of streaming time globally. Let’s not forget the popularity of “House”, “ER”, “Scrubs”, and “The Good Doctor”.

Viewers stay hooked, even if some parts make them want to look away. Watching medical science in action can be intriguing, and at the same time, disturbing. If you get sucked into hospital shows and are fascinated with the workings of the human body, keep scrolling.

Bored Panda has scoured the depths of the internet to compile a list of really interesting photos of the human body. From extreme close-ups of skin, to the effects of chemotherapy on nails, burns, bruises and even eye transplants... There's something here for anyone who has a morbid fascination with health and healing.

My sister had one removed, right in the middle of the hemispheres near where all our senses are. She can't smell...but she's alive. What "could have' happened was a long list from nothing, bkindness, memory lose, personality change, stroke, to death Very grateful we still have her, as her. I hope the op is living a wonderful life.

Medical dramas have become hugely popular over the years. Maybe we like watching someone else’s pain and suffering. Maybe we see doctors as superheroes. Or maybe we get a kick out of witnessing chaotic scenes play out in an operating theater. At least one doctor believes it’s because we have a morbid fascination with nature.

In particular, “our own amazing bodies, and all the things that can go wrong, but that are thankfully not going wrong for us in the moment" said Dr. Marian Rissenberg during an interview with Bustle. Rissenberg is a New York-based clinical neuropsychologist.

"I imagine that on some subconscious level, we cannot help but be intrigued at seeing something so socially unacceptable and morbid," said emergency medicine technician, Dr. Sonia Shah.

Background Note: she had tongue cancer and had it mostly removed. They took a large square from her forearm plus a bit of artery (hence the long cut) to make her a new one. They then took a thin/partial layer of skin from her leg to fashion the above graft.

We both went crashing down to the floor and I whacked my arm on the metal baby gate. I mostly managed to keep baby from hitting the floor too hard. Fingernails are sort of like tree rings. It's 3 months from nailbed to fingertip, so this patient last had chemo about 6 weeks prior. When I'd see patients treated with radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism, I could tell them how long it was since the treatment. RAIRx (radioactive iodine treatment) causes a sharply-demarkated line.

Subcutaneous bleeding that forms a bruise and then slides down the neck from the jaw. I mean, if they have to pry roughly to get the tooth out of your jaw, you're gonna have one heck of a bruise. It's a wound, after all. This one's pretty bad though.

Two of my four wisdom teeth had to be chipped out and the other two put up a hell of a fight. I was so swollen and bruised we had to crush up the pain pills because I couldn't open my jaw wide enough to fit them past my teeth for three days. My mom wouldn't let me leave the house for days because she was terrified someone was going to call CPS on her (I was 16 at the time).

This should have been a hospital visit. I've done this. What they do is take a heated element to put a hole in the nail so that the blood can escape. Relieves the pressure and would have wound up being a lot less painful for you.

Explanation from OP:I have a connective tissue disorder (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome), which causes basically everything throughout my body to be weaker than it should be, including blood vessels. This was the result of having an arterial line inserted so they could monitor my blood pressure during surgery.

My second child had two (!) real knots in his umbilical cord. Midwife insisted on CTG throughout the whole birth and showed us afterwards that heartbeat dropped to almost 0 during contraction. At one point, they were in a hurry to get him out with vacuum extractor and three people pushing on my belly. Everything went well, luckily (thank God for modern medicine and hospitals). Third kid had (only, haha) one knot in his umbilical cord. We tell them that they obviously loved to swim while there was enough space. Fun fact: kid one was breech baby, C-section for safety's sake--I asked the doc afterwards if there was anything visible that would have meant danger (as some say..."sometimes there's a reason"). There wasn't.

My second daughter was born the same. She was very congested in the face (midwives words), and had to go to NICU to be checked over as she needed to be resuscitated at birth. All very terrifying and traumatic. She is now 28, and bar dyslexia and eye issues, happy and healthy.

My son also had a knot in his umbilical cord. With each contraction, his hear rate would drop. Luckily, my doctor was able to get him out quickly and without a C-section. He was a small kid but healthy overall and now in his 30s.

My daughter had the throat-wrapped-once kind. We are lucky the cord was long enough to not put pressure on her throat until birth, at which time the doctor immediately did a maneuver to get her out fast.

That's BS. The pupil IS a hole. What's happening here is a coloboma. This person was most likely born this way, missing a portion of the iris (colored part of eye). Then BP or someone else found this image and made up a fake, stupid title.

Any US law student or lawyer should remember the case of Hawkins vs. McGee. It is a standard-setting case in the area of contract law and how to determine damages. A man who had severely burned his hand went to a doctor who knew very little about skin grafts, but promised the man "a 100% good hand" after the procedure. Sparing the gruesome details, suffice to say that it was a VERY botched skin graft. Since the harvested skin came from the patient's chest, the intact follicles continued to grow hair on the now-disabled hand. Generations of lawyers and law students know this as "The Hairy Hand Case." This was in the 1920s and truth be told, although he won the case, the plaintiff got royally EFFED on damages.

The modern belief that blood is blue before it comes in contact with o2 comes from how medical texts diagram the circulatory system, the effluent blood that goes to the cells for oxygen are transported by veins they are diagramed as red, the influent blood that has offloaded its o2 is taken back to the lungs in arteries they are diagramed as blue. So people have seen that for decades and it just kinda became "common knowledge"

In olden times in the UK the peasants tended to work outside (gardeners, farming, etc) so they were tanned, whereas rich people stayed inside and had lily white skin which showed the veins. Hence, upper classes had “blue blood”.

From OP on Reddit: "So a quick overview is that I was hit in the eye with a tree branch and have had 6 surgeries on it so far. My pupil does not adjust anymore so it always looks like it’s extremely dilated and my iris peeled up and is no longer brown but is showing the blue underneath. Also, I no longer have a lens in that eye!" When asked if OP can see out of that eye: "Without a contact, nope nothing, with a contact at power 15 I can see blurred images... like the outline of my hand if it’s close to my face." When asked about their depth perception: "At first it was pretty difficult but I can still take in sunlight and my brain adjusted quite well. I honestly can’t even tell a difference anymore after so many years, unless I close my left eye."

Oh I did this when we were making sauerkraut in my Babcia's basement one year! 30 gallons of kapusta, with a big wooden mandolin, and we'd pound it down with a wooden hewn log on a stick, sprinkled with salt. I must have been 12, sliced the top of my middle finger off into the kraut, just about fainted. LOL! Babcia fished out the finger tip, and had me go sit outside.

I did that only mine was a cleaner cut I. was so surprised it grew back perfectly normal and no scarring because it was my right index. Btw after we cleaned me and everything up my husband insisted he could finish the veggies and did the same darn thing, just not as severe. He promptly chucked that thing in the trash😂

GAHHH! I've sliced more than my share of fingers/bits off. Interestingly when I sliced the entire tip of one finger, and most of the bit down the bone on the palm side, it grew back like a normal finger. I do have a weird sensitive scar, but the end of my finger even grew back like the normal fingertip. I didn't expect that. I thought it would just be flat/stubby. Bodies are weirdly amazing. The fingernail does grow, just very, very thin and it tears easily, but I have a fingernail.

I cut a fingertip almost all the way off a few years ago - through the fingernail and all. Cleaned it very well, taped it back in place and it stayed on. Lopsided but serviceable.

A friend of mine had kidney cancer, after it was removed she told me that she had weird ridges on her fingernails for quite a long time. After the cancer was gone those ridges disappeared. Some years later I developed a huge ridge on a toenail. It was like the whole nail was wavy. I remember showing it to her in the swimming pool. Turns out I had uterine cancer, but very early stage. After the surgery my nails are normal again. Maybe it was a weird coincidence, but if you develop strange ridges across your nails, maybe go to the doctor.

I recently had a heart transplant (eternal thanks to my donor!). The amount of pills/IV I received was mind boggling. 6 months out, I am still taking 30+ pills per day for anti-rejection purposes. The amount is slowly lowering. About 2 months or so ago, I noticed ridges in the nails on each of my fingers and most of my toes. One doctor surmised it is the body getting rid of toxins.

A few years ago I got really sick to the point I think I was close to dying. Still to this day have no clue what was wrong with me. I had a fever every day for 3 months. My knees swelled up and I couldn't walk. I was in to see my doctor every other week, but we couldn't figure it out. I was tested for everything but it was all negative. After 3 months when the fever went away, I had those ridges on all my nails. Haven't had them since.

I had a bad fall that broke my pelvis in 3 places, but I also landed on my elbow. The elbow wound took about 8 months to close, and I had to have home nursing care for it (the pelvis healed much quicker!). As it shrunk and the dead tissue sloughed away, it took the shape of Alaska including the Aleutian Islands.

Actually, it’s a common thing. When cancer patients for example, lose all of their hair when it grows back it tends to come back wavy or curly. I lost all of my hair when I got sick after sepsis and I was severely malnutrition and anorexic and I ended up having disgusting wavy, crazy out of control hair now which I hate. I want my old hair back.

My fingers looked similar to that when I worked as a beekeeper. After developing an immunity to the venom (or whatever the technical term is) bee stings would be invisible 30 minutes after the sting, but would reappear as a tiny blood blister a day or two later, and then gradually fade away. My hands looked like they were freckled.

Last year I decided to have two more holes in one of my earlobes. One was done on soft tissue, the next had to be on cartilage. Although they were done on the same day by the same person and the piercings were both of surgical steel, the catilage one kept getting infected in intervals. Turned out I had an allergy to steel if it came in contact with cartilage.

Comment from OP: I cannot feel a pulse through it. No doctor has ever been concerned about it. Reiterating that I've had it since at least about age 5 which is about my earliest memories, so probably have had it since birth. I have a tiny scar on it, don't remember from what but it didn't kill me. There's also a recent bruise along the side of it but the flash from the camera makes it and the scar hard to see. I have other visible veins but none as large and um 3d as this one

This looks like x-linked ichthyosis. My 8 yo son has it and his skin is perpetually dry. He is missing a piece of a gene that codes for an enzyme that helps dead skin slough off. So essentially the dead skin just piles up and doesn't fall off forming this scale look. It is always worse in winter. We have found that Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Cream Gel is the only thing that actually leaves his skin moisturized for a chunk of the day. Everything else he still looks dry with in the hour. We use to slather his body in vaseline and put a full body onesie on him when he was first born (so uncomfortable seeming) and he would be so dry a minimal amount of time later.

K-Tape doesn't "heal" muscle or joint injuries, though some people try to get you to believe it has special properties. It works as muscle/joint support and can also help with scar healing/stretching. It really sucks if OP got injured/hurt further by using it when they were probably led into believing it would help with some other issue.

Completely off. OP is an archer using a heavier poundage bow. They used the KTape to help reinforce their elbow from popping out of place, and to give a little extra padding & friction guard to the forearm to protect against the bow string. Bruise is a result of the bow string slapping the forearm. The K-tape made interesting patterns while protecting against friction damage & supporting the elbow.

Many years ago when I was a teen and taking typing class in junior high (8th grade where I went to school) my mom bought me a old used manual typewriter. It is heavy. I was carrying and dropped it on my foot/ big right toe. Damaged my toe nails. Ever since it has been twice as thick as all the other toenails. It is hard to trim or cut with a toe nail clippers. At times I had to use a utility knife to cut/trim it.

Sometimes the extra fingers are growing out at a funny angle, or the wrong shape, or don't have all the associated hand bones and tendons, so they aren't functional. If it's not a functional finger, it's just gets in the way, is injury prone, and can interfere with developing fine motor skills.

Grr. Another coloboma. ETA: I mean look at the position of the pupil. It's asymmetric to begin with. So assuming a foreign object poked into the pupil then pulled down toward the nose- the pupil would not have changed its entire position.

In response to some of the comments below: This is a friendly reminder that just because YOU personally don't like something, doesn't make that something intrinsically wrong. Nor does it make the person who does like it a bad person. It just means they have a different opinion than you. And guess what? THAT'S OKAY. I have been like this before and boy do I feel for this person. As far as I know I'm not allergic to anything. Probably about 6 years ago, I first broke out in just a couple hives on my lower back, for the first time ever. I got the hives shortly (less than an hour)after getting into a very emotional and stressful fight/argument, but didn't think much of it, at the time. Since that initial break out, I suffered through some very awful and painful hive break outs, over large portions of my body, most of the time. I should have invested in Hydrocortisone cream, haha, even though it didn't really help much that often. It didn't take me long to figure out that these huge, raised and extremely itchy/painful things were caused by or induced from extreme stress. I was initially prescribed an EpiPen but I no longer have one because I don't think I need it for my particular situation. I hope OP got better quickly.

    Nail Damage From Chemotherapy

    Nail Damage From Chemotherapy

Thought this was interesting - you can see the ridge on my nails where the chemo damage starts. I finished chemo in June, so this is almost two months of healthy growth.

The ring finger nail is only attached by the small patch at the bottom - the rest is just free. The bruising (?) on the middle nail is mildly uncomfortable and I expect that's the next nail to detach. Interestingly, my thumb nail escaped largely unharmed, except for one large ridge!

Wow, I always thought that an octopus would use all its arms and suction cups as it's first line of defense, so to speak. Idk, I guess I never thought about the possibility of being bitten by an octopus while in the ocean. If I happen to disturb one somehow I thought maybe they might release ink, as a warning sign or wrap a tentacle around me, or pretty much anything other than bite. I'll have to remember that, as I frequent the ocean 3+ months out of the year. I feel like a bite would be a last resort thing and since it's on OP's hand, makes me wonder if the octopus was provoked or maybe OP picked it up because their beaks, which is what they use to bite, are inside the center of their bodies. Either way I hope OP made a full recovery.

The same it looked before. Ink is deposited a lot deeper than a thin scab or a scratch could reach.

The Reddit thread suggests dehydration, and I have to agree something's up, because this is not what the marks in my skin from laying on something while asleep look like.

Is he trying to show (off) how little effect pegnancy had on her belly, or am I missing something else? Call me envious, but I don't like pictures like these being spread. This is just very unusual, and even knowing that it is unusual, I would have made it harder for me to accept the absolutely common "still pregnant or not?" look my belly had for days, weeks after giving birth.

Pregnancy and giving birth are both very traumatic to a woman's body!

    Marie BellaDonna
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I mean, it can be. But this isn't a result of any trauma. It's just from hormones. When a woman is pregnant, her hair and nails grow thicker and stronger. After she delivers, her hormones go back to normal, and so do her hair and nails. It's why a lot of new mothers lose a butt load of hair. Because they didn't lose any, during pregnancy. Pregnancy was the only time I could grow my brittle nails out long, lol. Granted, this is an extreme example. But still natural. Not traumatic.

Please don't take Brandies comment the wrong way, it is what a woman is meant to do. Traumatic is a very strong word - it does a lot of strange things, it can hurt and it can make you sick, but if you take care of yourself, it is the most wonderful thing that will ever happen to you.

Not that easy. Scar tissue will have formed a fibrous capsule around it, it'll actually be really difficult to remove.
