He is definitely lucky, but if you want a less on-the-nose name try something like awal or baru, awal baru means new start in Indonesian.

That expression reminds me of Sir Scrappy, one of our rescues. He was FIV positive. The Vet said he wouldn't last more than a couple months. He was in bad shape. Sir Scrappy lived 5 good years. He passed in March.

I went to the shelter hoping for a Siamese or a long hair. Found two bonded adolescents, both all black, tight together in a cage: an Oriental shorthair boy and Longhair girl! And that's how I got Mister Jones (house panther) and Muffy the Fluffy, who looks like a black Chuzzle. God I love them...

When I was actively fostering cats, I always encouraged people to take two if possible. If not, I tried to pair them with a "loner" cat... some cats just prefer their own company, but cats, especially kittens, need company too, and they're more fun when you can watch them playing together. I'm so glad you got the BOGO package.

Providing your new pet a forever home means more than filling a couple of food and water bowls. The animal’s physical, mental, and even emotional health is in your hands. The responsibility is huge, however, the happiness these dogs and cats radiate is more than worth it.

Something that you should definitely put at the forefront of your mind is your pet’s health. If you’re bringing a baby cat or dog home with you from a shelter, you should definitely book an appointment with a trusted local veterinarian.

I have similar pictures of my 3 day old Floof who I held close to my body for weeks, to make sure he wouldn't die after he was abandoned. None of his siblings made it but he did. Can't post it anywhere without getting "boobs" or "tits" or "I want to sleep there" comments unfortunately, but Floof made it, he's healthy, headstrong, sweet, lovable, stubborn, cuddly, obnixious and entitled, lived through a house fire before 6 months of age, pneumonia when he wasn't even a month old,, polyps in his ear when he was barely a year ols and is now 5 years of age, very healthy and still obnoxious. A legion of angels must be watching over him Good to see other kittens getting the same treatment! Floof and I are sending some of the angels over to watch over this kitten too

PDSA Vet Anna Ewers Clark had this to say to Bored Panda: “You should book your puppy or kitten in for a health check with your vet soon after bringing them home. This will allow you to check they’re healthy, they’re growing at the correct rate, and when they need their next parasite treatments or vaccinations.”

The vet explained that this also gives you the chance to speak to your vet about any other procedures. “You’ll also be able to discuss when is the best time to have them neutered.”

Sounds like the Bombay I had. Some idiot thought it would be a good idea to declaw him🤬. (Just in front, but STILL!) He became aggressive because he couldn't protect himself. He also bit, because he couldn't scratch. We were his 4th home in less then a week. (Or something similar). We also became his last home, because I understood why he was like that, plus he did calm down once he realized he wasn't going anywhere.

According to Anna from the PDSA, there are some financial things to consider for pet owners, too. Some owners might forget about the importance of insurance. “Make sure you insure them from the day they’re brought home so their vet bills will be covered if they ever become unwell or are injured,” she pointed out. In other words, you should hope for the best while planning for a realistic scenario.

The age of your new pet is more important than you think. The PDSA Vet stressed this fact to Bored Panda. “Your puppy or kitten will need a slightly different routine from an adult cat or dog,” Anna said.

Looks like a young version of mine. Rented a house and landlady asked us if she gave us food money, would we feed her cat she couldnt take. Previous tenents had said he just came in at night to eat, but was scared of people so just leave him alone. A few months of leaving treats leading to the fire, we tempted him in. That was 6 years ago - when we moved, landlady was very happy we asked to take him with us. He is the most affectionate loving cat in the world. Not tecnicaly a rescue - but went from being alone to loved, and gives us back ten fold every day.

I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society where I once lived. She had been rescued with her litter mates when just a few days old. When I met her, she had been living in a cage there. All her siblings had been adopted when they were about 8 to 10 weeks old. She was almost 9 months old when we met and fell in love. Don't know why noone wanted her. She was a beautiful cat and so sweet and demure. And so very shy She hid under the bed for almost two months before she began to venture out. I would catch glimpses of her peering around the corner of a doorway watching me. One afternoon while watching a program on bird migration, I felt a soft touch. Later a light weight near my lap. She had climbed up onto the couch to watch the birds on TV. I named her Lil' Darling. She became my best bud and we had 23 wonderful years together before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I still miss her.

She is so beautiful 😻! I have three Black Cats. At one point I had six. They are known as the Black Cat Army. I’m trying to get things in motion to start an non profit, selling products featuring black cats (t-shirts, coffee mugs, personalized gifts and such were most of the profit goes to building a shelter for Black Cats. A place where senior Black Cats can live out their lives in peace if not adopted. Where they will be safe, loved by the staff & me. The plan is a shelter in a country setting where they will have an open areas. Not the old type shelter.

This is great. I recently became the human to a 4th puppy, this one being a 9 wk blue nosed female pitty & I was really concerned my middle child, a 92lb pit-rot-corso-tibetan mastiff mix would not take to her well as he's insanely jealous of the other dogs & my bf 🤣 but guess who her absolute best friend in the whole world is.. & who's left feeling left out & jelly asf!! 🥺

If they are given TSH/iodine then they can and do metamorphose. They can also have an extremely rare condition that results in them producing TSH and metamorphosing. This is indeed a morphed axolotl.

I rescued a salamander from my goat barn a few winters back. I don't know his story for certain. But if I had to guess, I'd say a bird snatched him and brought him up to the rafters. Salamanders are slippery though, so I imagine he managed to wiggle free only to plummet dozens of feet to the floor of a busy goat barn. I found him cold stunned and a tad beaten up. I'm not usually one to move wild animals, but the little guy was definitely going to get trampled. I let him coalesce for the night in a bucket of damp potting soil and set him free under the garden shed the next morning. Hands down one of my cooler house guests. 😊

What this means is structuring your day differently than you would with an adult animal. The owner has to be prepared to be more disciplined and put in more effort until their new best buddies grow up a bit.

“It’s important that they have regular mealtimes when they’re young. Usually around 3 meals a day. They’ll also need plenty of rest. Often young pets are very active in short bursts and then will become sleepy,” the animal health specialist explained to Bored Panda

Just keep doing what you’re doing, and you’ll be just fine. It’s called bonding. We rescued a 5-6 week old, barely 1 lb kitten who was abandoned, all by herself, in our yard. She spent the first two weeks living on my neck in my hair. She’s now a year and a half old, and about the most well-adjusted cat I’ve ever seen. However, I still share the title of Mama Cat with our oldest female cat, Smudgy. I took care of her when she needed it most, and still take care of her, as well as the other cats and the dog, and Smudgy taught her how to be a cat.

She mentioned to us that we should be willing to play with our new pets as much as possible to keep them active and help them develop. However, at the same time, we have to be aware of the fact they’re tiny cuddly creatures: they get tired easily.

“It’s important to play with your puppy or kitten as this is an important part of their development and encourages them to be active, but if they start to get tired it’s best to let them sleep for a while,” Anna advised us.

Meanwhile, the more varied the experiences we can introduce into our new pets’ lives, the better they’ll be off in the long run. Think of it as training them to be better prepared for the future.

“Puppies and kittens have a socialization period when they are young, which is a time when their brains are hard-wired to learn about the world around them,” the expert said.

“For puppies, this [the period of socialization] is from 4-12 weeks, and for kittens from 3-8 weeks old. Lastly, why do you think so many pets end up being abandoned? A whopping 6.5 animals enter shelters each year in the US, according to the ASPCA. There is a bit of good news: this number has fallen from roughly 7.2 million way back in 2011. There is some progress there, though the numbers of unwanted pets are still pretty high.

The ASPCA notes that around 4.1 million shelter animals end up getting adopted each year. Moreover, 810k are strays that end up being reunited with their worried owners.

Obviously, we wish that more pets would get adopted, however, we have to give it to those who do end up rescuing pets: you’re doing great work and we’re proud of you. If only there were more people like you, the world would be a far, far better place.

Same. Especially since foster parents do so much of the “heavy lifting” involved in getting them healthy, happy, and socialized enough to finally go to their forever homes.

Baby will fill out, believe me. You’ll blink and suddenly have a very large full grown cat. We adopted the runt of a litter, who was half the size of his sisters, and always two steps behind them, developmentally. Jack is now almost seven years old, and weighs a little over 14 lbs. From runt to big boy in the blink of an eye.

I kept the whole family and the runt reached 18 lbs. The biggest of the siblings reached 24 lbs at some point and he definitely filled in after getting him fixed.

Have a foster from a very sick 5-kitten litter...sibs died within two days. Three lost the same day we got them. Missy is a little over a pound now (had to be a pound to get her kitten shots) and very active. Might end up as another ‘foster fail’. 7 of the 9 we have are foster fails.

We adopted 2 kittens . One was "filled" out but the other was like your new baby. When they grew that little one ended up being the biggest cat in the house. Steady meals, vet care and most importantly a lot of love work wonders.

My husband says when he was a kid late 60s early 70s his parents decided to invest in chinchillas. Raise them and sell them for coats. My mother in law had several get rich schemes my father in law humored her with. Like Amway. Anyway, they had dozens in cages but they all died of old age because his parents couldnt bring themselves to that end.

Check your facts. This is probably descended from generations of domestically raised and would not survive in the wild. They are hard to find because most breeders don't want to be bugged by animal rights people. They make great pets if you have a cool enough environment for them, and don't die in 2-5 years like most rodents, and don't stink up the house after two days either.

I have had many a kitten climb up my jeans that exact way. When they reach the top, they settle on my shoulder to hide in my hair. Yeah, sometimes I get to be the Mama Cat.

Our oldest female cat was already fixed when we adopted her as a six month old kitten, so was never pregnant. However, every kitten/cat adopted since has looked at her as their adoptive Mama. Oddly, even though she has no experience with motherhood, she fell into the role quite easily.

I assume she wasn't afraid of her owner specifically, but of all hoomans because she probably made her experiences as a street dog that told her so. They tend to learn rather quickly though whom they can trust.

We have three cats (it was four, but the nineteen year old passed a couple months ago) and a dog. All rescues with mystery pasts, I might add. We swear the dog is a cat in a dog suit, and one of the cats is a dog in a cat suit. Amongst other cross-species behavior, Scruffy (the dog) acts like he wishes he could do his business in a litter box, and Smudgy (the cat) would just love being able to do hers outside (like she used to before being rescued). It evens out on paper, but in reality, it’s just weird.

Our recently departed Henry (Jack Russell size) used to love to climb up on top of the sofa, just like that, on constant lookout for the dreaded and much-hated postperson. 'Don't you DARE put mail through my letterbox. I will bark. And you will be sorry.'

Not really. Rescues I had, reached their maximum luxury by laying on soft matrace (or even carpet, some were freaked out by soft matrace) and dry place, as those I had were almost entirely abused and held in outer cages without roof. But yours found where he's most comfortable and that's great.

I absolutely HATE petting zoos. Imagine it was the other way around - it would be torture. Why is it OK to do it to animals?

    snipergun

I don't know how it works where you live. Here petting zoos are not bad at all for animals. They spend time with them and they find right match for every one to be happy, and if it's animal which prefers solitude they find him place where visitors can't come and take good care of it. Same about animals which don't feel comfortable with being touched (holding and lifting up is forbidden), and all is built in the way that it's entirely on animals if they want to greet people or be left alone. At least in this area it's like that.
