Many of the toys we see on this list are plushies. Soft stuffed animals are suitable for several reasons but it's good to know which one your pet would get the most fun of. For some cats, the stuffed animal should generally be small enough to carry around. But if your cat wants to "kill" the toy, the stuffed animal should be about the same size as the cat. Bonus tip: toys with legs and a tail seem to be even more attractive to cats.

But other dogs want to shake and "kill" their toys. If that is the case with your little K9-wannabe, choose one that's large enough to prevent accidental swallowing and sturdy enough to withstand the attacks.
To make your pet's toys last longer, rotate them weekly by making only a few toys available at a time. Keep a variety of types easily accessible. However, if your four-legged friend has a favorite toy, you may want to leave it out all the time.

I had a cat named Lucy, who we adopted with her brother out of a barn when they were 9 weeks old. First toy she picked out was a squeaky stuffed duck that was bigger than she was. Over the years, Duckster went through many repairs, many accidental swims in the water bowl, many trips through the washer and dryer (on purpose and by accident if dropped in the laundry basket), and a re-stuffing. When Lucy died, Duckster was buried in her arms. (I still miss her.)

Well, we all had favorite toys when we were kids—-some of us still do—-so it makes sense that our companion animals would adopt that behavior. I’ve always thought of my animals as being kids. My cat, now 16 months, was hand reared from a day old as he was the runt and unable to latch to mum and started losing weight. Originally planned to get his weight up then return to the litter, however he came down with calicivirus so it wasn't possible. Before he was big enough to mix with my other cats he had a unicorn beanie toy that he was the same size as to snuggle. This is still his "sister" to this day, he carries her around, washes her and gets distressed if we throw her or touch her!
