People are finally talking about period pains, something that we, as a society, still don’t really understand or recognize. Period pain, like much of women’s reproductive health in general, is under-researched, misunderstood, often swept under the carpet, and shrouded in taboo.

Looking beyond the sensationalist headlines (the heart-attack pain scale comparison came from a single doctor’s anecdotal evidence), the conversation raises all kinds of important issues and questions that we are long overdue in discussing.

For example, why is so little known about a condition that affects 20% of women to the point that the menstrual cramps debilitate them from doing their daily activities? Why do doctors take women’s pain thresholds less seriously? Why are women left with little option but to keep quiet, take some pain relief, and get on with it? Would there be more research and understanding if men had to deal with period cramps too?

Right now, there isn’t really a prominent lobby pushing the need for further research, and there still appears to be a general media discomfort about using period-related words on their channels. There are such deep-rooted linguistic and societal links between the womb and the emotional over-reaction of women, and even the word ‘hysteria’ stems from the Greek word for uterus. You could say that this has been going on for a while now. So if things are going to change anytime soon, we really need to start talking about period pain, to normalize it, and to get doctors to start taking it more seriously.

Ironically (or not), it took the revelations of a man for people to start the conversation. But talking about it, they are. While some people are shocked by the headline-grabbing comparison to millions of women, this is old news, and they took to social media to share their stories. Yet here we are, pale and bent over from pain, off to work, cooking for our man, doing the household; without even complaining anymore

Weird. You should probably learn to respect yourself a bit and demand a little more from your partner.

I think we need a technology that would allow us all to record our experiences and play them back into eachother's heads. Physical pain, emotional pain - if we all knew how it is for each one of us no one would ever belittle the pain of someone else. I think of how many times people say that those with depression should just get over it since others have cancer; never realizing that many with depression would gladly exchange their problem with cancer to see and end to their pain. Comparing and minimizing without understanding and true empathy is the source of most strife in the world.

So you can belittle a pain you've never had because you're pissed that a man belittled a pain you've never had. Gotcha.

I shake my head whenever women compare something to the pain of being kicked in the balls. How would you ever know? It's not really comparable to any other type of pain I can think of.

That’a fine, and I’m not saying your wrong, but aren’t guys doing the same thing to us? The amount of times I have been told that I’m being over dramatic and exaggerating is probably in the hundreds. I don’t underestimate the pain of being kicked in the balls. However, in the same regard as your comment, how the hell do you know the pain of a period or giving birth or your water breaking? You don’t. So don’t tell me it’s not like getting kicked in the balls if you don’t know, and I don’t not tell you that it IS like getting kicked in the balls. Let’s just understand that the other person is in pain and respect that.

But the difference is that most of the time, your pain is acknowledged. Yes, people and cartoons make jokes out of it, but if any of my male friends somehow got hit in the balls, you can be damn sure I’m not going to say they’re faking it. However, when I have my period and am in constant pain for a straight week, to the point where I feel like I literally can’t move and all I can do is throw up and cry in pain, curled up in my bed sobbing with no way to stop it, I will not stand for some dude saying “it’s not that bad”

My boy cousin once said that getting kicked in the balls was more painful than childbirth. Getting hurt in a sensitive spot, or pushing a human being out of your uterus. Tough decision...

Yeah I am repeating myself here. Keep asking the health professionals until someone can help you. Also the older women in the family. For some of us the hormones help, for some the *correct* herbs.
