“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Ladders. 7 times more likely to kill you than a gun. Which is why I keep 7 guns in the house in case some MANIAC tries to sneak a ladder in here!

lmaoo this is a Gravity Falls joke, he isn't being serious. Guns kill tens of thousands more people than ladders do, and that's in the U.S. alone.

It is not a contest to see what kills the most people every year, and then ignore the rest as if it had lost the game. I had some eye-opening ladder safety training when I worked for the local utility company. It is easy to be a smarty-pants about that, but there are a few key pointers to know. Always maintain 3 points of contact when ascending or descending; wear proper slip-resistant footwear, not bare feet or flip-flops; do not re-position your center of mass outside of the supporting ladder frame for any reason; only one person at a time on the ladder; do not work on a ladder without someone else with you (in case you slip or fall, you will be unable to get up); etc. etc. Yes, it is so easy to dismiss this, but ignorance about proper ladder safety harms and kills many people every year.

So, if I'm robbing someone at gunpoint with tights over my head, I'm more likely to die if tights have ladders?

What? Ladders kill roughly 300 people *a year* in the US. *Every day*, on average, 316 people in the US are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. Guns kill more people in one day than ladders do in a year!

I friend of mine (who is over 60 y.o.) was carrying the ladder from the garage with the intention of cleaning the gutters when his cell phone rang. "GET OFF THE LADDER THIS MOMENT!" - it was his wife who called from out of town. " But I ..." "JUST DON"T TOUCH THE LADDER!" "How do you even know..." It turns out his wife had threatened all their neighbors with castration if they didn't call her the minute they saw her husband with a ladder.

And it's going to get much worse in the US. Due to hospitals being run like corporations, the minute one stops making a profit it gets shut down. Combine that with ob/gyns fleeing the states who have criminalized abortion, and you get a situation like the one in Alabama, which has no obstetric hospitals AT ALL. If you are a woman living in AL who is having a complicated pregnancy, or who needs medical help in labor, you are just s*** out of luck.

The person does specifically mention "globally". While I haven't checked to see how accurate it really is, overall statistics don't necessarily represent smaller portions. It could be a minor problem in some areas, but he such a problem in others that it completely overshadows the area, such as Sweden, where the rates are low.

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Driving while tired. When we get exhausted, our minds stop working as efficiently as they should. Our reaction time slows down, we tend to daydream, we hyperfixate, we make poor judgement calls. That scene in Better Call Saul where Kim runs off the road is probably the most accurate depiction of driving while tired ever to be shown on TV. That scene is supposed to take place over the span of at least an hour; watch the background for clues. Note how the city just quickly vanishes. One second everything is fine, the next second you're in a ditch. Don't try to be a hero and "power through it". On a long drive, stop every two hours and walk around, even if it's just for a few minutes. Don't be afraid to stop longer. And try not to push yourself more than 6-8 hours a day.

Several studies have been made that show the effects of exhaustion are exactly the same as the effects of alcohol intoxication. And you can't shake it. The body needs what the body needs. When you're tired, you need sleep like an engine needs fuel. Just powering through is not possible. You will make mistakes and fall asleep behind the wheel. No one can avoid this after a certain point of exhaustion.

Once we drove by night because it was summer and the days were way too hot. We had a 700km trip to do, sandwiches, snacks, coffee and tea, good music. We had slept 4-5 hours before driving. About 80 km before arriving, we felt exhausted. We stopped to have a breakfast, take a walk, but the feeling didn't go. Please note that there were friends waiting for us, but we didn't agree on a precise time. We had to sleep. Both of us, nearly an hour and half. Then we did the last hour of driving, safely.

I do a fair amount of long distance driving for work, and one trick I've learned is to take a large bottle of water, and make sure to have a few swigs from it every 10 to 20 minutes. 1. It keeps you hydrated 2. It makes you take some deep breaths, (part of the reason people nod off while driving is because they are sitting in a comfy chair, and not breathing deeply) 3. After 1 to 2 hours of swigging water like this, YOU HAVE TO STOP AND PEE! (thus, making you get out of the car and move around for a bit.) Try it, it really helps.

Driving tired is, in the eyes of science, effectively the same as driving drunk. Choosing to drive after 2 hours of sleep is literally just as irresponsible as driving drunk. You are saying you don't value your life or the lives of others when you choose to drive tired.

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Heavy drinking. A lot of people, including myself thought that it took a long long time for heavy drinking to catch up to you, like when you're in your '50s or older. And mostly for people whose drinking was clearly catastrophic. And even then that a lot of the damage can be reversed through quitting, in the same way quitting smoking can. I was shocked when people I was acquainted with, or friends of friends, started dying of alcoholism in their 30s-40s. All of these people were high functioning- had successful careers, family, friends. And it was liver failure that came on without much warning. I was kind of shocked- I assumed there were many decades of warnings before your system finally failed, and I thought that most people who drank themselves to the point of it killing them were people whose behavior was clearly out of control, not people who are pretty well functioning in every other way.

My grandfather died of liver cancer. There’s a guy in my building who a few years ago he found out that he had cancer and su*cide was a mortal sin, so instead he literally drank himself to death. It was very sad to watch because he was such a sweet soul. Now another friend I know who is a very severe alcoholic has liver cancer. 3 years ago, my sister who is a severe alcoholic had a brain aneurysm. They life flighted her to Duke university. She had 6 brain bleeds after. Since then she has stopped drinking and is trying very hard to stop smoking and because of the brain trauma she developed schizophrenia at the age of 50. It just breaks my heart because we are so close in age we are like twins. It’s very hard to watch. It brings back terrible memories and pain from when my birth mother abused me because she was schizophrenic and unmedicated. My dad doesn’t understand why I don’t want to always talk to my sister. Sometimes I don’t have the strength to handle the craziness. 😢

My father - veteran, ironworker, strongest person I knew, learned a lot. Quit drinking around 35, bought a house for us, things were looking good. Fell back into it at 44, died at 47. I was 21. Sucks thinking about the time we lost, but, his passing made me take stock and stop my indulging. Went 12 years without a drink, now if I have 10 a year, that is a lot. Had to leave a job (there were other reasons also) because of the drinking culture.

Alcoholism is a disease. It doesn't care how old you are. It WILL get you in the end. If you find you can't go for days or even hours without a drink, you have a problem. Seek help while most of the damage can be reversed. Not easy, but life saving.

And people are definitely onto something here. For example, one study found that about three-quarters of American drivers think their overall skills are better (57%) or much better (17%) than average.

At the same time, 58% say they had been in at least one prior vehicle crash as a driver.

"Most people think they are above-average drivers, and if drivers are a problem, it is other drivers, not themselves," the researchers noted. "This may explain, in part, the considerable public apathy about highway safety."

This should be at the top! I've had a Basel cell carcinoma (rodent ulcer) and is the type of cancer that rarely kills. But melanoma is one of the most dangerous cancer that leads very often to secondary cancer. By then it's too late! Terrible cancer to have!! All cancers are bad obviously, but this one is known to not stop, even after treatment. I know it's not everyone, but too many die because of this. You only have to get sunburn once, although this tends to happen more with very fair people.

I remember waking up in ICU on life support, fighting with a nurse to remove my tubes. I don't remember the crash that left my helmet in four pieces and me in coma for three days with bleeding on the brain. The helmet is why I am typing right now and not six foot under.

Even with a helmet it happens, I knew someone who had his rear wheel clipped by a driver, hit the back of his head below the helmet on the kerb, severed his brainstem.

I come from a country where wearing helmets for all kind of activities is normal and not wearing one s frowned upon. Now living in a country where the locals think it is hilarious that all these tourists wear helmets "because they don't know how to cycle. We don't need one because we are smart". However, as soon as family members end up severely mentally handicapped or dead, the smartypants are angry, sad and frantically try to find somebody to blame. You do you, but accept the consequences.

Lots of comments from motorists, all of whom are obviously wearing helmets whilst driving. As head injuries from car crashes would absolutely dwarf those occurring in these other pursuits.

As someone who used to play roller derby, this is a BIG one. I remember I was practicing on my own once, was going very fast and my skate caught a tiny pebble or a crack (not totally sure) and flew head first onto the concrete. I had a minor but still nasty concussion (I still remember the feeling of my brain getting slammed around my skull), but I would likely either be a vegetable or dead if I weren't wearing both my helmet AND my mouth guard.

We did that this summer for me. Couldn't safely step in and out of the tub. I had a transfer shower chair and we needed to take down the glass doors and put up a shower curtain to accommodate it. I hated it, made me feel older and sicker than I am. The new setup is so pretty, nice surround, pretty glass doors and a fold-down seat for me. I feel like I went from a nursing home bathroom to a nice hotel. And we have a hot tub for soaking.

Me too! I blame my daughter for using too much shampoo before I went for a shower. I slipped and I thought I was going over backwards head first. Luckily my diy skills are better than my balance because I came down hard but the shower pole/curtain stopped from something serious. 10 mins later I'm searching Amazon for a shower mat and I kid you not they call them suitable for the elderly.😠

Rubber bottom bath mats right outside the tub/shower and they make anti slip mats that suction to the tub/shower floor. You can get both at just about any store that has home goods. They're also not that expensive at all, very much worth it.

Indeed, beliefs are our brain's way of making sense of and navigating the world. They are mental representations of what we expect from things in our environment and how they should be related to each other. Beliefs are templates for efficient learning and are often essential for survival.

As a prediction machine, our brains must take shortcuts for pattern recognition as it processes the vast amounts of information received from the environment. Beliefs allow it to quickly categorize and evaluate that information and to jump to conclusions.

But in doing so, our brains have a preference for familiar conclusions over unfamiliar ones. Thus, they are prone to error, sometimes seeing patterns where there are none, like assuming something to be safe when in actuality it can be quite dangerous.

Honestly I am iffy on this one. Most energy drinks (250ml can) have about the caffeine of a cup of coffee. A very young kid has no business drinking either, but I've been drinking coffee since I was like... 11ish? And haven't suffered any ill effects from it.

We had to evacuate my office building of 1000+ people because of a bomb threat (was not an exercise). The evacuation doors at one spot were not opened and we remained stuck at the gate with no possibilities to go outside or move backwards. I can tell you within seconds people started panicking and pushing us to the gates while we couldn't go away, and the room started filling. No one was injured but we a realised that had it been a fire a real stampede would have started.

One of the most dangerous places to be in a tight crowd is near a hard obstacle like a wall. If the crowd starts to surge, it hits the barrier with nowhere to go, just like you said; that's usually when people die.

I used to work at a supermarket in the UK which was owned by Walmart at the time. I worked in the home shopping department, picking people's shopping to be delivered. We were based next to the bakery in our store. We had a fire exit in our department and the bakery had a fire exit in theirs and because our fire exit opened out into the car park, the bakery would receive their bread delivery through this fire exit. We'd have racks and racks of break just inside the fire exit and the access to the door was blocked. They also used to do this on the shop floor next to the bakery too as they'd leave racks in front of the fire exit to prevent blocking the aisles. I surreptitiously took photos and was planning on sending them to the health and safety executive when a big boss noticed them and read the bakery the riot act. It stopped after that.

I fell down an entire story of concrete stairs onto a sidewalk. Consider myself incredibly fortunate that all I ended up with was a fractured talus bone (part of your ankle that holds up your entire lower leg) and didn’t require surgery, a severely sprained ankle and bent my foot to a 90 degree angle that went right down the middle from ankle to toes. Stairs without banisters make me very nervous now.

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Any mechanism involving a cable or rope can redirect drastic amounts of force, and gain or lose tension unpredictably. Never take a wrap on a line that you aren't certain the potential load on if you like your fingers. Could be a tow rope on a car. A ratchet strap securing a heavy load that shifts. And stay clear of any line under tension. You got a high speed machete if it snaps.

Do NOT EVER straddle or step over a cable or line lying on the deck or ground unless you can physically see that at least one end of it is loose. Step ON it if you have to cross it. It is better to be thrown by a tightening line that to be cut in half by it.

The number of dog owners I see wrapping their dog's leash around their hands makes me shudder. I got it very graphically explained to me when learning to lunge horses that you NEVER EVER do that unless you actually want to break every bone in your hand or deglove it and just because Fido's only a fraction of a horse's weight doesn't mean that the leash won't rip your hand to shreds if he takes off after a squirrel.

Schoolkids found this out the hard way about 50 years ago. They wanted to set a record for the world's largest tug-of-war. The phone company generously gave them the cable. But as the tension increased, the cable suddenly snapped, slicing through hands and severing fingers.

I am a tool and die maker, been working with these machines for nearly 30 years. You shouldn't fear them either, that's just as dangerous. A very healthy respect, yes, but fear will make you make mistakes just as much as overconfidence will. Also, some machines are inherently more dangerous than others due to how the work is held, tooling is held, motion of work or tool, guarding (if possible). I told all the apprentices I ever taught, "Every machine in this tool room has the capacity to cripple or kill you, the engine lathe you see there is the only one looking forward to it."

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Not knowing what medications you take. Can’t tell you how many times someone gets brought in to the ER without a thought in their mind about what they take for meds. “Oh my spouse/kids/etc take care of that for me.” What meds you are given in the ER/hospital can be dependent on what you are already on. It is your health, you should have some knowledge about it.

This definitely happens. My ex refused to call doctors. It was always my job to call, to get his meds, to talk to the doctors, you name it. He was very infantile about his healthcare. But he finally got a doctor who forced him to grow up. He had an appointment and I went with him. The doctor asked questions and he refused to say anything, so I began answering. She stopped me and said I asked him. He wouldn’t answer still. She booted me from the room so he had no choice but to answer. After that, he learned, he needed to speak up. I think he was that way because his mother did everything for him and he wanted another mother. I kept trying to get him to do his own stuff but he just wouldn’t do it. This doctor pushed him out of the nest and helped him grow up.

Once my Dad was given medications that should not be taken together, by our then family doctor. My brother was studying human biology at the time and realised something was up. He looked them up in the drug guide and read they had contraindications with each other. Since then I always check all my medication for side effects and contraindications, even when prescribed.

I found out years ago some of my medications could cause serotonin syndrome completely by surprise. My insurance caseworker called me to notify me and I didn’t even know that I had an insurance caseworker! Ever since then she’s not only been monitoring my medication but also anything else that I need health care wise. There’s a good chance that you might have someone at your insurance company who monitors your case. The best way to find out would be to call your insurance company and ask them to speak to a worker or nurse about your concerns.

That’s actually a very good tip! I never thought of that! If you have an iPhone, you can go to the Apple Health app and add all your medical information (medications, surgeries, allergies, etc) to it and set it so that emergency personnel can access it from the Lock Screen without having to unlock the phone. You can even get reminders to take your medication at certain times of day or night. It’s what I’ve done for my phone. One benefit is that I can text it to all my doctors and they all have access to all my medical information and I don’t have to worry that this doctor doesn’t know what that doctor knows. I make sure they all know the same information and they all talk to each other to prevent any problems. I’m going to use your tip though. I keep a copy of my car insurance cards, my registration, my medical cards, and my daughter’s cards, as well as her EBT card in my photo album on my phone. Now I’m going to add my meds to the album. Thanks!

And this is why, as someone who works in our local ER, I don't let spouses speak for a patient unless the patient is incapacitated in some way. Maybe I'm being petty, but at minimum you should know what meds you're on and WHY YOU CAME TO THE ER IN THE FIRST PLACE! (Note: this excludes people who cannot advocate for themselves, such as in instances of dementia, loss of consciousness, language/communication barriers, etc).

I use small type and print it out, one each for me and him, and we keep both in our wallets. You're not wrong if people remain objective and only talk about the truth. Unfortunately, many people add up their own part to sound interesting, repeat elements that were not proved (or even openly lie), and some chose what gossip they'll relate, according to whether they like the person or not. BTW you may hear something appalling but on get only one side of the story so can it be trusted? That guy has bearen up another one? Strangely enough, the narrator 'omits' to say he was attacked out of nowhere.

The reason flour is risky to eat is that while its powdery consistency looks like it's been cooked, it's actually as much of a raw food as lettuce or carrots. Flour is made from grains that are grown in fields where they may be exposed to a variety of harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. The processing the plants go through to convert from grain to flour doesn't kill them. And unlike lettuce or carrots, you can't wash flour to clean it.4 Two studies shared by the site Food Safety News highlight the fact that the consumption of raw flour is a real threat to public health. In fact, the CDC lists "raw flour" as one of their seven main groups of foods that can cause food poisoning, and there have been many E.coli outbreaks in the past decade that have been linked to raw flour.

Contamination with salmonella mostly, although other bacteria such as bacillus cereus and e coli can also cause issues. Remember that flour is milled from whole grains that have sat in a silo which absolutely 100% had rodents in it using it as a toilet.

Imagine that you are, for example, a chef and you have to cut a piece of meat. You cut twice or more to cut the meat because one stroke of the knife is not enough to cut completely through. The same can happen when a knife is thrust into the body: the knife cuts halfway across, for example, a blood vessel in the first stab. If someone pulls the knife out, the blood vessel is cut completely because the first "pull" was not enough to cut the blood vessel completely. The next cut may complete the cut and the blood vessel opens completely, and the opening after the first stab gives the blood a way out of the body when the knife no longer stands there and closes.

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Surgery in general. I feel like people look at a lot of surgeries as something foolproof, because doctors need to have a lot of practice and skills to be able to perform what they do, but with high skill requirement jobs comes high consequences for failure, and it sometimes seems like people don't give surgery enough respect, as it is literally opening up your body in a controlled environment, something that can usually end up being fatal when not done by experts. Like yeah, the surgeons are well trained and this is their job, but at the same time i'm still holding my breath when a professional daredevil does something risky, and to not have any level of respect for the risks associated with surgery is in my opinion very naive. For an example of what i mean, there's a noticeably large number of mothers who hold the bad opinion that if you had a c-section, you're not a mother because "You took the easy way out", which always angers me so much because of a variety of reasons, one of them being that having to need surgery for any reason is not the easy way, and it shows their lack of respect for what surgeons do.

Former RN and occasional surgery patient. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS MINOR SURGERY!!!!! Completely unforeseen things can happen. We cannot see this coming, but there is something called “Arresting on induction”. The anaesthesiologist puts you to sleep and you have a cardiac arrest immediately. They did nothing wrong, couldn’t see it coming. You usually don’t make it. When you sign the consent, the doctor tells you complications are 1 in 1,000, realize you could very well be that “1”. Sometimes it actually is no fault of the surgeon. They could be the best, but bodies are bodies and they’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. If it’s scheduled surgery do research the hospital and your surgeon. Even check out with their governing body. Have they ever been penalized for something. So many times when your doctor tells you “ They’re the best”, unless you’re at a teaching hospital, they aren’t. But what are they going to tell you, “They’re not great but the only one you could get into?

Part 2. PLEASE READ THIS! Read your entire consent. Word for word. Ask lots of questions. Expect answers. Don’t sign that thing until you feel completely comfortable with Doing so. I’ve had to deal with so many patients in Day Surgery who had not had it signed until then. Things happen. Has your doctor explained everything to you to your satisfaction that you understand the surgery? Do you have more questions? They’ll be happy to talk to you if you do. Anesthesia consent. Same thing. This was much longer than even the surgery consent. Then I ask them to read the consents in they’re entirety before they sign it. “Oh, I don’t need to. I’ll just sign it”. Nope. If I have to stand there and read it out loud to them, I would. But they’re going to have heard what is written in it before they sign.

I’m resistant too. I became aware during surgery on both ears. Of course I wouldn’t hear them talking. But you don’t have to remember it happened. But your subconscious does. I woke up you could have peeled me off the ceiling. But I didn’t let on. I worked with these nurse and doctors. I didn’t want to look like a “wuss”. The level of panic attacks thereafter, first of all, didn’t know it was that until I went to my psychiatrist. If he couldn’t make them go away I’d kill myself. Now, there’s a serious discussion happens and they practically use a sledgehammer.

Even for "low risk" surgeries, like a pacemaker implantation, someone's gonna have to get the short end of the stick, because the risk might be something like 0,3% instead of 0%. Yeah, that was me, you're welcome.

I was nearly blinded during back surgery because the anesthesiologist did not do her job. And she tried to blame me. ("Lady, I was asleep at the time, remember? You were the one who put me to sleep and were supposed to keep an eye on me!") My wife called my ophthalmologist, and he agreed to see me immediately. He treated my eye soon enough to prevent any lasting damaged. And yes, I did file a formal complaint with the hospital.

Ahhh this is one of my biggest fears (I have a lot of anxiety about going blind), I’m glad there was no lasting damage. Something similar happened to my mom; the anesthesiologist didn’t tape her eyes closed correctly or something and her cornea was scratched, luckily it didn’t affect her too much

Just know that the vast majority of the time it does come out fine. As I said above, ask lots of questions until you’re satisfied with the answers. Consent, what they are doing at the time, and especially instructions for when he goes home. Be a pest and don’t leave until you understand it all. They should provide you with written ones and who to call if there’s an issue as well as when to head for the emergency room. Really really important.

Home fireworks displays. Every time I’ve been involved in one it’s very nearly gone horrid in a very bad way due to something falling over or not launching or the fuse being way shorter than expected/advertised (usually not to do with me!).

Safety glasses should always be worn with fireworks. One New Year's Eve in the park, the launch pad fell from the firework shooter. I heard a warning, saw a rocket moving along the ground, I turned and covered my head with my arms. A bang and a colorful flash. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Even without starting a fire, fireworks litter your entire neighborhood. We had a neighbor who celebrated moving in by launching fireworks that rained debris all over the streets and on everyone's roofs, gutters, and lawns. Then next morning he cleaned up his property and only his property. He did succeed in introducing himself to the neighborhood.

I'm Gen X, and I was taught to have a very healthy respect for fireworks. Come 4th of July, we kids had to stay well back from the fireworks being lit, had to hold our sparklers at arms length, and when our sparklers or the fireworks were out they went into a big bucket of water. Every year I begged for a Roman candle, and every year I got told "No, they're too dangerous." Growing up in SoCal we didn't have any fireworks like bottle rockets as it's too easy to start a fire with those as you can't control them.

There's nothing wrong with the classic fireworks for home use: Piccolo Pete, California Candle, the pellets that turn into "flowers" or "snakes." So long as you are mindful of how to handle them and where. However, the projectile fireworks should not be displayed in a residential area. Those things can go errant in a heartbeat, and not everyone is physically able to escape a burning home in time. Also, I can do without the M80's, thank you very much.

Hiking. If it‘s a big area without proper trail marking people tend to overestimate themselves and get lost easily. Without a cell phone with connection and enough water it can get tough really soon. Cold nights outside, nothing to eat/drink, dense forests that prevent being spotted by helicopters or wide unvegetated areas where the sun burns down on the hikers and dehydrates them even more

I left one in my child's backpack for her entire school run, I don't think she ever used it, but it was there just in case!. It's not a bad idea to take several on a hime, they can be turned in to a lot of helpful things if u are all of a sudden in a survival situation

It is poor preparation and inexperience that claims hikers. Tell people where you are going. Research were you are going. Take navigation tools that will work where you are going. Overestimate how long it will take to do what you want do where you are going and accommodate for the needs that the extended time there will require. TELL THE LOCAL POLICE WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND HOW LONG YOU INTEND ON TAKING, PROVIDE THEM WITH AN ITTINERY AND NAMES AND NUMBERS OF NEXT OF KIN AND THEN INFORM THEM OF YOUR RETURN!!!!!!

I looked after 2 patients after severe bike accidents. One actually walked into the ER with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and all he had on was his work boots and his jacket zipper melted into his chest. Our ICU was not a burn unit, but in those years it was too dangerous to transport him anywhere else. Over5 months we all learned about working in a burn unit. If I ever had to do that again, I’d quit. I always give motorcycles a lot of room and I’m careful. I’ve seen what can happen.

    - An electronic cigarette is an easy way to inhale many different things. So it can be very dangerous. "Unofficial" liquids, containing oil, vitamin E, Research chemicals and so on can kill you fast. Stick to “official” liquids. Don’t take a puff on a e-cig if you don’t know what’s inside. Three puffs on a counterfeit liquid can get you to the hospital with tachycardia (hello Budda Blues!). - Nicotine is not a joke. It is addictive. Choosing the nicotine quantity in your liquid is a serious thing. If you don’t smoke, don’t vape. If you do it anyway pick a 0 mg liquid. Or the lowest you can find. Don’t get hooked to nicotine on purpose, it is stupid. - Vape is attractive for young people, including children. There is an infinite choice of flavors. It does not stink like a cigarette. Some e-cigs have been designed to be cool and attractive for young people (hello Juul!). This is a problem. In a perfect world vaping would only be a way to stop smoking cigarettes.

This always ends up with passionate debates. Here is my own opinion based on personal experience (as a smoker and a vaper) and lots of research online: - Vape can help you stop smoking. It worked like a miracle for me. - There is no information about long term effects of vaping. Just because vaping is a new thing. - Healthcare specialists mostly agree that vaping is be far less dangerous than smoking (I have seen 95% less dangerous but there is no precise study so it can be any number). There is no combustion with vape. No tar, no carbon monoxide. But no idea of long term effects. - Vaping cannot be 100% harmless. Inhaling stuff can't be 100% harmless. Even breathing air is not 100% harmless. Especially in polluted places. - You do not get "popcorn lungs" or respiratory insufficiency as a short term effect of vaping. The 2020 crisis was due to people vaping improper liquids (containing E vitamin).

In My Country a pack of Cigs costs around $2.20. 20 smokes x 13 puffs per smoke = 260 Puffs. A vape offering 1200-1500 puffs comes in at $6.50. So for $6.50 you would get about 780 puffs vs vaping. Nearly half the puffs for the same money. THAT's why vaping is popular among teens now. More cost effective. You don't smell like smoke and fun flavours. Since most of the world is banning fruity flavours for this very reason, our country gets them dumped on our store shelves for almost nothing to get rid of the surplus the manufacturers now cannot sell in their previous target countries. On the cheapo end of the scale you can buy a pack of bottom grade cigs for under $1 though

Eating rice that hasn’t been refrigerated/reheated properly. If you store rice at the wrong temperature, it can allow the bacteria Bacillus cereus to grow in the rice. People who have gotten sick from the rice have had severe vomiting, sometimes as little as 20 minutes after eating the rice. I only learned about this after hearing about a restaurant where about two dozen people got sick from eating contaminated rice, and the restaurant ended up shutting down because of it.

This is the most absurd and blanket statement that actually makes a lot of people's actual illness be bypassed because doctors will say "just lose weight" and not addressing the real issues. Im "overweight", yet lead a healthy lifestyle, exercise 3-4x a week, eat balanced and my labs are all normal. Partner looks fit yet doesn't exercise, has high BP and cholesterol. I had a traumatic surgery and bunch of medication that changed my body's way of storing fat. Stop thinking fat=bad. Loneliness will kill you sooner and y'all probably are.

Yes, for certain values of 'overweight'. Some definitions, like the simple BMI over 25, can be wildly inaccurate as indicators of health, but if you're obviously noticeably 'fat' then you will be more prone to certain illnesses.

I can't tell you how many jobs I've taken (mostly out of desperation) where I have had to get up at monstrously early hours (for me at least- say, 6am) and it literally makes me feel physically ill. Especially when coworkers who are morning people smarmily grin and say "oh, you'll get used to it and even learn to love it!". No. I absolutely won't. FOH with that nonsense.

Studies have shown that most people work best when they can sleep during darkness. Some people find working permanent nightshift is great (eg 7 nights on, 7 nights off). The very worst is when people are required to work changing shifts eg daytime, evening, and nightshift. This mucks up people's body clock so badly. They are constantly tired.

I was diagnosed as bipolar in my 20's and I know for a fact that my mood and health are dependant on getting quality sleep. I can't imagine how messed up I'd be if I had to work constantly changing shifts.

If it’s cosmetic, understand it may very well not come out with the look you were dreaming of. And the really important word here is “surgery”. Don’t think that just because it’s “cosmetic/plastic” surgery that nothing goes wrong because you’re not having surgery because you’re sick. It can. Used to work with a plastic surgeon who “built” beauty contestants/queens. Yes they are very much built. Never understood taking all those chances for a beauty competition. The surgeon should get some kid of credit there. But, I will tell you that reconstructive plastic surgery is epic to work with.

“Eating Raw Flour”: 40 Dangerous Things That Most Perceive To Be Safe Showering. Everything in your bathroom is made out of material that can kill you. A slip and fall out of a shower/tub onto the hard porcelain of the toilet (or tub edge), or the corner of the bathroom counter? The tile floors? Immediate brain bleed. Walking down stairs comes in a close second, especially if you have pets or small children.

After a car accident with an injured back, I was toweling off after a shower and my back went out. Hit my face on the corner of the sink on my way down and knocked myself out cold. I won't shower when I'm home alone any longer.

Walk in showers with grab rails and non slip tiles should be the standard. None of this stepping in and out the shower or having slippery tiles.

Had a rubber antislip-mat in our shower... which slipped when I stepped in. Fell backwards, luckily my back hit the wall, slowing me down so my coccyx was not hurt. I did stub my feet agains the opposite wall, causing my two right smalles toes to break. Guess I was lucky.

As someone who has worked with large hoofstock it is not so much walking in a field with them that is dangerous. Mostly they just walk away from you when you get within a certain distance. But working up close to them is definitely dangerous; a thousand pound animal doesn't even have to try to hurt you to cause damage.

I cringe when I see any video of toddlers around livestock. Especially horses. I love horses and have been around them my whole life, but they are large animals that easily spook and could seriously hurt a small child, unintentionally. Crazy, in my opinion, to let small children around large animals!

I walked in a field of cows once. Looked one of the cows in the eyes too long and nearly started a cow riot. I made her nervous and the rest of the herd felt that and I felt just how quickly things can go very wrong. Scared the living c**p out of me. Thankfully, they decided to let me pass safely. Thank you cows!

An underestimated danger. I camped a lot as a young girl. The lakes,Wales, Yorkshire and we did a lot of walking. I never ever felt comfortable crossing a field with cows. These were public routes ,yhey are so big. They really frightened me. I think they are lovely. K just wouldn't want to be in a field with one that gets spooked and runs..or all of them walking towards you at once. Terrifying

Not sure if you are agreeing with this or doubting it. "A New England Journal of Medicine study showed that there’s up to a 24% increase in risk of heart attack on the Monday after the spring time change.1 (A rather startling stat.) This study looked at the data from a Swedish national heart attack registry and discovered that the rate of heart attacks was considerably higher in the days following the time change compared to other times of the year."

DST was kept out of my state for decades due to lobbying by the drive in theater owners. DST would have delayed by an hour the darkness they needed to show the movie, and this would cost them in ticket sales. This isn't the only reason I miss drive ins, but it's one of them.

I know three ways in which cats kill people. A friend has recently got out of hospital after surgery for a broken femur. She was tripped by her cat and landed hard on concrete. At the cattery, one cat there had tripped its owner down a full three flights of stairs, this cat is always underfoot and always deliberately tripping people. Second, cats have less saliva than dogs and people and consequently a lot of mouth bacteria. Cats have so much mouth bacteria that they have been classed as venomous animals. A friend of my wife lost the use of her hand from sepsis following a cat bite. This friend was a pianist. The third way that cats kill people I experienced myself. I was stuck in bed with the flu, feeling sleepy, and at the right psychological moment my cat shook itself all over my face. Unknown to me it had been covering itself in pollen outside. Instant anaphylaxis. My airways shut down and I couldn't breathe. If I hadn't rushed out of bed to the bathroom I would have died.

"Cats have so much mouth bacteria that they have been classed as venomous animals." That's literally not true. Like not at all. Cat bites are definitely dangerous, especially since they can pierce bacteria deeper into tissue, but hospitals exist for a reason.

Told my wife... we did not eat the chicken, but everyone who did got a colon cleanse. She's MUCH better about it now, wipe surfaces after prep, keeps stuff refrigerated.

Bleach does not work after it touches organics, the reactive oxygen reacts, but is still dangerous if ingested. Pure soap is actually more effective at killing and removing organisms. Quick scrub with hot soapy water is more effective and safer. Dry surfaces also kill.

Can we put irresponsible owners on here? I ran into a couple that had 5 dogs off leash in a public park last week, while my 2 were on leash. They had zero control and several of their dogs were ready to bite. The idiot owner was using a shock collar on one, with no commands, so the dog was growling at ME, thinking I was somehow hurting it. The owner clearly need training!

Having natural gas supplied to the home. People really seem to dismiss how easily a leak (and apparently it’s always leaking enough to possibly cause health problems) in a line or old appliance can fill your house with a deadly/explosive amount in short order. Even an external supply line rupturing can f**k up your house. At the very least you need redundant gas detectors, decent air filtration, and not slacking on replacing the water heater

It seems that I am far more sensitive to fumes than the machines that test for them. Exhaust leaking into cars, (cars that have been used for self ending reek to me) and gas leaks in neighbouring properties or from underground. When I have reported smelling gas outside they have to drill holes for the detection equipment before it picks up any traces. The last guy dowsed with rods to find the pipeline (he was a sceptic before the guy who trained him showed how it worked). I asked him if he wanted me to show him exactly where the pipe was leaking. Easier and cheaper than digging lots of big holes. Downside was smelling the fumes from other flats boilers on windless days

According to a formula used by life insurance actuaries your average life expectancy is reduced by 15 years if you live in a rural environment. It takes emergency vehicles longer to get to you (too late, in fact, if you have a heart attack); absence of street lighting on roads with higher speeds traveled by automobiles; roads which are often in less than perfect repair; higher percentage of gun ownership (and all the potential accidents resulting therefrom); etc.

“If it’s so dangerous why are they allowed to sell it?” consumer products in the U.S are not as regulated as you think. They are more regulated than, say, China, but this bit of “common sense” won’t protect you from suspicious food additives, lead on cable cords, or whatever mystery substances exist on wherever. The FDA probably doesn’t even know what the f**k is in gets added to white glue besides PVA (the preservatives, extenders, etc). They regulate food, drugs, and medical devices, then who regulates that glue? Heck the FDA allows barely tested medical devices to pass clearance only for people get permanently damaged or die from them.

The FDA looks at food and drugs, hence the name. Glue and other consumer products are regulated by the CPSC. The CPSC is a bit of a joke amongst EU product safety authorities as they are hopelessly underfunded. Even the tiniest EU countries have more inspectors than the entire US.

agree! especially when it comes to pharmaceuticals. i see commercials come across the t.v. and then the voice over speaking very fast about serious side effects. the things that are stated make me wonder what the hell haven't they mentioned. i used to think the big pharma conspiracies were c**p but in recent years i have seen so many medications be approved only to have some of them either taken off the market or restricted in use. part of the problem is that drs rely on pharma to develop them & their representatives whose sole purpose is to get the drs to use them. it's why i am in constant fight w/my drs to stay on meds that are considered 'old' because any problems with them are known. this was the result of being prescribed one med that actually did really well for me only to have it ripped off the market because of high mortality rates after taking for a while. kind of felt i missed a medical bullet since i hadn't taken it very long.

Cycling is very safe (unless you’re racing down an alpine pass), cars are dangerous. Drivers don’t look, don’t care, or worse get actively angry to see a bike in front. I’ve had some really dangerous overtakes when I’ve been cycling. In a city there’s little point in overtaking as I’m generally only slightly slower than cars, and often much faster.

Acetaminophen/Tylenol. I'd really appreciate it if we made a drug that is better at treating headaches and fevers than ibuprofen (ibuprofen being better for muscle pain than headaches or fever, even if it helps a little) and is also easier to dose than acetaminophen. 1 is too little, 2 may be too little or just enough, 3 may be just enough or too much, and 4 may kill you. I have to either have a very *very* bad headache that impedes with my ability to function rather than just being painful or a super bad fever (over 101° F) before I even touch acetaminophen.

What a bunch of nonsense. Paracetamol (the actual international name, stop already with the us names and brands) is one of the drugs with the best ratio efficiency/safety. As long as you respect a very simple max daily dose (4 grams for an average adult) it’s completely safe for 99.9..% of the population. You’re an epic dumbass if you’re unable to follow the simplest dosage indications (basically a 1g pill every 6 hours) to get the effect while not taking any risk.

The only thing l was allowed to take when l was pregnant was paracetamol. And it's ridiculously easy to remember the maximum dose for an adult, 4 grams (or the weight of 9 small pigeon feathers for you Americans). If the pain is so intense that you need more than that, there are alternatives that your doctor will give you. But saying paracetamol is dangerous is quite the stretch.

Yeah, I had to call the nurse hotline a few times when I was sick and asked how much Tylenol and advil I can take. Straight from the nurse, the guidelines on the bottle are a lot lower then the danger zone. I have been put on high doses and been just fine. You have to take a full bottle at once to be in danger. Also, that little advil or Tylenol is what kept me out of the hospital because it kept my fever out of the danger zone. This person is a hypochondriac.

That is pretty dangerous depending on your general hygiene and your health status. If I am immune compromised, eating off a sticky dirty floor isn't a god idea. But you are unlikely to get ill if you are healthy with a working immune system. And the amount of seconds doesn't make a difference. There is no armada of bacteria waiting five seconds before they start to conquer said item.

    arthbach

It also depends on the texture of the item being dropped. A glossy, sugar coated sweet, like an M&M is going to fend of the bacteria for longer than something sticky or moist.

yes! with the perceived opioid epidemic my drs have cut back on the med and suggested that i use Tylenol more. wtf? so, between the prescribed meds and the Tylenol i have to have a running account of how many mgs i am taking in 24 hours. don't get me wrong - i know there are families (including my own) who have lost people due to overdose/addiction. but, for those like me who have legitimate need and take it responsibly are at risk of living a half-life in pain or having a quality of life with managed care. it's a difficult situation for drs and patients but the government needs to stay out of patient care so drs can treat without contcern of being targeted. oversight - yes; control - no.

Never heard of A+E, hope it’s not a hospital because when a patient is « screaming in agony » of course there are numerous treatments to ease the pain, especially in a hospital where supervision is easy and serious/specific drugs can be used. As for the overdose, there are antagonists or antidotes, associated with analgesics. That won’t magically repair severely damaged organs but you would never let someone suffer in agony and tell them to just get through it. Was that a third world country? Even a mild sedation would change everything.
