As miraculous and wonderful as the human body is, at the end of the day it’s incredibly fragile. Unlike cats, we only have one life to live, one chance to make it right before we end up on the judgment table between Heaven and Hell. Where we shall end up, who knows, but the fact is—having a food allergy can speed that process up significantly.
Allergies can be annoying to begin with; however, they can also be incredibly life-threatening, with one single spoonful of forbidden fruit landing you a ticket to the emergency room. The situation is made a lot more complicated when people decide to ignore them, brushing them off as just a chosen preference.
People have shared their own personal experiences of coming incredibly close to the rainbow bridge, or stories recalling the times when they witnessed the blatant ignoration of their very important needs, all prompted by Candace D.’s tweet, which gathered 158.3K likes on the platform.
Bored Panda had the pleasure of speaking with Dave Bloom, the CEO and Co-Founder of SnackSafely.com, who was kind enough to answer some of our questions.

There are some people who maybe don’t like something and they’ll say they’re allergic, but then eat something later that contains the same “allergen”. These people need to STOP IT. They are making it difficult for those who actually have allergies to be taken seriously!!!
I disagree. I'm not the food police. If you say you're allergic or you simply do not want an ingredient, that is enough for me to not feed it to you. It's not my job to determine if you're lying or exaggerating. I don't care how many people faked an allergy, if you say not to feed you something, I will not do it.
Load More Replies...My son is casein intolerant but in his case it creates lung infections and breathing issues. I frequently find that people will put "lactose intolerant" into his files when I've specifically said he can't have dairy because it creates breathing issues. Having to take a kid to the ER because he's turning colors from lack of oxygen is pretty scary. I cant even imagine worrying about an actual allergic reaction to consuming dairy.
Surely if it is affecting his breathing and leads to lung infections that is a food allergy? An allergy creates an immune system response, an intolerance does not. An intolerance commonly only causes digestive issues, but can cause other symptoms including headaches, rashes or joint pain. It sounds to me like you need to clarify the nature of your son's condition and also reassess how you refer to your son's condition when informing others.

Every time, people answer that if it's not an allergy they won't give a sh*t about it. At hospital, at work conventions... I have to fight to make sure they won't give me cheese. So I can understand why some people just lie about it. It's exhausting to explain that I'd rather starve than eating cheese.

Yea, im mildly lactose intolerant. I will read a menu and decide what i want from it. If there is milk or cheese involved, i might have a slightly uncomfortable stomach for a couple of hours. Occasionally i will stick to a vegan menu and avoid the discomfort, other times i might have ice cream for dessert and deal with stomach cramps and diarrhoea, as thats my choice. But if im cooking for others, i will totally respect when others tell me about intolerances and allergies and avoid cross contamination.

There is difference between allergic reaction and fod intolerance. People who didn't encountered neither of these have no idea how huge is the impact on person's health.
I was milk protein and gluten intolerant as a child, and a little was not "fine". One cookie gave me diarrhea for a full weekend, almost bad enough to be hospitalised for dehydration.
My daughter Vi had streptococcus in her gallbladder and at age 4 hospitalized to prevent Staph. We were told she absolutely cannot have food with high fat content for several months. The Dr gave us a list. My Wicked Stepmonster completely ignored the list I gave her for Thanksgiving which she assured me it would be okay, and Vi ended up back in the hospital. Let's also not forget the final straw for me was starting an email argument with me and my siblings the day we put my mom in hospice care. I hate that woman.

You can even develop an allergy to foods you have eaten for years with no problems, as the immune system creates antibodies to the allergen of choice over time—new fear unlocked! I think it’s safe to say that no one would willingly choose to be allergic to any given food item.
Dave Bloom, the CEO and Co-Founder of SnackSafely.com, a company aiming to improve the lives of those coping with food allergies, and to educate others as a means of eliminating anaphylaxis, told Bored Panda that even a trace amount of an allergen can lead to a serious, life-threatening reaction.
“We always coach our readers with food allergies and celiac disease to know PRECISELY how their food has been prepared and if they have any doubts to forgo eating,” he said. “Even a family member or friend with the best intentions can cause a serious reaction if a trace of their allergen makes its way into their food inadvertently via cross-contact.”
I hope you recovered quickly and brought charges and sued them for expenses and lost pay and got her sorry butt fired.

I blame the "gluten free" trend for this. There are so many people now who unnecessarily claim some kind of gluten allergy, that no one actually believes those with real medical reasons for avoiding it.

If you're willing to risk a persons life and health because other, completely unrelated people are fakers, you are an A$$hole. Load More Replies...I’m curious as to how anyone could dispute the severity of the reaction when this person (OP) had to get up from the table and RUN to the bathroom to vomit? Depending on the context of the dinner (at a friend’s house or at the OPs house and the person who brought the food that had gluten did not know/remember/believe/fully understand how gluten allergies [or any food allergies for that matter] work) the other people at this dinner would potentially hear (depending on how close to the dining room the bathroom is and if there’s a fan in the bathroom -that works and is loud enough) the vomiting and put two and two together! Maybe that’s just me and my experience of having grown up with a mom who has a long list of food allergies (and other allergies). Coconut is one of her allergies and it’s in SO many things, not just food. Sunscreen, hand lotion (she has eczema too, because she’s collecting ALL the allergies *100% kidding!*), lip balm, the list goes on 😡😒
I have a bunch of allergies too, including cogarette smoke. Some people literally don't comprehend (in spite of countless explanations) that it makes my lungs constrict if I even accidentally walk through a poof of someone's second-hand smoke. It was worse in the late 70's (I was like 10 yrs old) & people would smoke in cars with me trapped inside. I have skin allergies too, which many people mistake for "sensitive skin." It's not the same. Hypoallergenic (so-to-speak) isn't always good enough. I have to read the ingredients or just skip the potential product altogether, to be safe. I truly wish that people would understand I'm not a drama queen & really do have weird allergies. Like, who would even want to make this **** up?

My niece avoids gluten because it causes her Hashimoto's to flare, and she and I were doing the bachelorette thing because her husband was out of town. We used rice pilaf as stuffing, made the pie crust from gluten-free cookies, and she made the rolls with a gf mix that was rather good. Honestly, it was all delicious.
I remember my auntie trying to claim my cousin was celiac when she was little, then my grandmother piped in with "well she eats bread at my house and I've never seen a reaction" turned out my auntie was just pushing her issues with food onto her daughter 😕

Whether someone has a food allergy, insensitivity or just doesn't want it, why do people think your choice of what to put in your body needs to be legitimized by them? People have sensory issues and their need to stay away from a certain texture or taste is just as valid as someone who has anaphylaxis and must stay away from it. My sister seriously asked my nephew's friend if his celiac was the "real version from blood tests". I told him that no one else has to go home and pay for it after you've had gluten. Ignore them. Also, I have many food sensitivities and Igg allergies that affect my autoimmune illness. It's very hard to quit these foods. So, if I'm eating cheesecake even though I can't tolerate dairy, it's because I was weak and gave into my craving but I know I will pay the price the entire next day to few days. Everyone needs to stop judging other people's preferences and choices that affect you in absolutely zero way.
I’ve had celiac since I was 8 and I’m 14 now. The amount of times my friends have not checked the label or their parents said “my one gluten-free cousin such and such eats this all the time,”DOES NOT MEAN ITS FINE! Also companies not putting what the item actually contains on the CONTAINS label is the most frustrating thing. Also it’s illegal.
I was having a pre-med for a small op and was asked about allergies. When I said "wheat" the nurse literally tutted, rolled her eyes and asked in a sarcastic voice " and what happens when you eat wheat?" Expecting me to say mild bloating she was taken aback when I said anaphylaxis and even went to tell the surgeon. Not all medical staff are on board with allergies. What chance do we have with servers and chefs at restaurants?
Dave explains that there are 2 main reasons why people ignore their loved-one’s dietary needs, as seen in the multiple accounts mentioned in this article. “Fad diets have made people increasingly skeptical about dietary restrictions, and people are uninformed about the danger of allergic reactions; they equate reactions with a hive or a rash, but don't understand that reactions can easily escalate into full-blown anaphylaxis and lead to hospitalization or death.”
Finally, Dave believes that the best way to prevent a tragedy is to educate people of the few basic tenets of food allergy. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) explains that symptoms of a food allergy can range from mild to severe. Just because an initial reaction causes few problems doesn’t mean that all reactions will be similar; in fact, the reactions are likely to get worse over time.
A food that triggered only mild symptoms on one occasion may cause more severe symptoms at another time, the most severe being anaphylaxis—a life-threatening reaction that impacts breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate.
While any food can cause an adverse reaction, eight types of food account for about 90 percent of all reactions: eggs, milk and dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame. Thus, the primary way to manage a food allergy is to avoid consuming the food that causes you problems. Yet avoiding an allergen is easier said than done.
I have an onion allergy and people are always trying to get me to eat food safe for example out of a can or a frozen TV dinner. Onion is in everything. If I want to eat tacos I have to make this seasoning myself. In fact if I want to eat I pretty much have to make everything myself.
My mom is allergic to pepper (in all forms) and sunflower seeds/lecithin. It's pretty hard for her to find things she can eat unless it's made at home!

I had a friend who simply didn't like onions. Cooked or raw. Granted he didn't have an allergy, but he made his preference known. And yet, inevitably, someone would sneak onions into his meal and ruin it for him, because "he'll never know".
That’s awful when people have the mindset of “they’re never know”. I’m averse to onions, not allergic, and I always know. You can smell it and the onion juice permeates everything, even if they pick it off. I’ve even had cut fruit taste like onions because the cook cut the fruit on the same board or knife without washing properly. It’s super gross.
Load More Replies...We kept an extra bag of unopened lettuce up front for a regular customer who was allergic to onions when I worked at Subway. She was super sweet about it and I guess she had come often enough that she felt safe enough to go through the drive thru. The only customers we got annoyed with were the non-pork people who refused to believe our salami and pepperoni were beef and not pork and forced us to change our gloves.
OMFG, same thing happened to me when I had lunch at a place with my cousin I was always curious about. (I'm glad you at least gave your customer the courtesy of a redo.) I stated after ordering and before each course NO ONIONS. Gee, you'll never guess what was literally on top of the salad I was served... RAW ONIONS. I could smell it before she even made it to the table. I said, I said no onions. She was like my bad and walked away for a few minutes, in which time the "chef" could have easily literally thrown together another one (it was a crappy house salad). She comes back with what is obviously the same effing salad with no onions on it. I sniffed it and it was blatantly obvious all she/they did was pick them off. I was pissed and over it at that point so I just gave it to my cousin because he doesn't really care about onions and he got a salad out of it. Pure laziness, never going there again.
I can’t have onions, garlic or anything from the nightshade family (ie potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, paprika, and and and)… it is nearly impossible to find anything unless I cook it myself. Luckily, my entire extended family is super understanding and careful ❤️
I have two Epipens for a food allergy and it amazes me the level of ignorance of some people. Thankfully family and friends take this seriously. Those who don’t are advertising their stupidity for the world to see.
The horrible thing is -a lot of people keep telling me I can't be allergic to onions because it isn't one of the top 10 allergies and they've never heard of someone being allergic to onions so im obviously making it up
my mum and sister both have an onion allergy. it's so hard to find food without onion or onion powder in it! at a restaurant we managed to convince the chef to make mum a risotto without onion (since he made it fresh anyway). they brought her the dish, no onion in the risotto. made a point of saying 'there's no onion in it' but they'd put onion on the salad...

I was in a party store. I overheard a woman talking to an employee complaining about how she had to buy nut free foods for school and favors and was claiming this 'made up allergy' should not be humored. I found her and explained my child is one of those children and showed her my purse epi pen and benedryl. And told her how on Christmas my child missed everything because of someone ignoring her allergy and getting hives on 60% of her body.
Here's the thing: Peanut allergies MAY have been made more common by doctors recommending all children up to a certain age avoid all peanuts just to be safe. Turns out the complete lack of exposure made peanut allergies more likely. But these were still real allergies that did real harm to real children!!!

Many people don’t seem to know that immediately throwing up a food they are allergic to is not unusual.
I am the same with all the peppers in the world and there is a problem, that peppers are omitted in a dish descriptions in restaurants, delis and product boxes. Sometimes classed as “natural colouring” sometimes as completely miss matched side (I mean eggs benny DONT NEED SIDE OF PEPPER)
This one got me the worst because I eat chili peppers everyday, and the thought of never being able to eat any type of pepper would send me into a dark spiral. I really feel for people who have food allergies.

I can't count how many time I've been in the drive thru with my mom, and we get handed two unmarked cups...her regular Pepsi and my diet. We ask which is which and the server confidently, 100% positively, points out which is the diet. When we then ask "Are you sure? Because it's a medical issue, too much sugar could put my son into the hospital", suddenly it becomes "Uhhhh...why don't I just remake those for you?"

She was drinking rum and Coke when the bartender ran out of Coke and just threw diet Coke in the drink. She said she was three sips in when she started reacting. Her husband had just loaded her in the car as she was passing out. Luckily, the restaurant was just up the street from the ER.

If it was that easy, you would have done it yourself. Plus, is she handling money? If so, she shouldn't touch food without washing her hands thoroughly first.
Usually a drive-through has 2 different people, sometimes 3. But everyone handles money anyways. Even wearing gloves would not have been acceptable. A fork, spoon or other utensil would have been. But in OP's case, none of the above is acceptable because of transfer.

If someone is aware that their friend is allergic to something and they SNEAKLY PUT THAT SOMETHING IN THEIR FOOD is basically like sneakly poisoning them with arsenic. It's the same level of crime, for me. Making someone go to the Emergency room is a big deal and it should have consequences. The medical staff should automatically alert the police, just like if they treat a person who's been shot.

Being allergic does not equal "because I just don't like it." Had this happen with my egg-allergic toddler. MIL didn't want to make any "special considerations" for her, so my kid barfed all over her pretty dress, all over her brother, all over my car and me. She ended up wearing her dad's T-shirt home.
My brothers plane was delayed when someone with a peanut allergy was late and wanted to clean everything himself before anyone could board. This passenger had to be taken to hospital before the plane departed from Schiphol-Amsterdam. Cleaning is done with gloves and clean cloths, but in the rush the handles of the luggage compartments were forgotten.
That's a devastating level of allergy... every place, every person, every thing becomes suspect.

But my BFF’s boyfriend’s bunch of friends decided to secretly squeeze juice into my drink and film my reaction to post on social media (with the title ‘Is there actually an allergy or is she just seeking attention and being dramatic?’) Needless to say, before my friends could warn me, I drank the thing and ended up in hospital. Geez.

Load More Replies...Been there done that, got the hospital shirt. My X-MIL didn't believe that I'm deadly allergic to artificial sweeteners, as in Cave-aspartam and acesulfarmkalium. She made some dessert and I asked before eating any of it, if there was any artificial sweeteners in it? She said that of cause there wasn't. Surprise...she was lying and when my mouth and throat started inching after the first bite, and I began feeling dizzy, I asked my X if would get my epi-pen, and to call 911, she scoffed and said that I was faking it. Even after I seing me collapse and get intubated on her living room floor she still didn't believe me. When the DA slammed her with my countries wertion of "attempted manslaughter" she frisking still didn't believed me.

Load More Replies...It's one thing to not actively put something in the food, but it hides in a condiment. A good reason to tell the person the WHOLE recipe, so they can check the ingredients list. It's a completely different thing to say one thing and do the opposite. That can be attempted murder, if they (including the allergic person) are unlucky. Murder, if they are really unlucky.
I had someone do something similar with my shellfish allergy. Claimed it was just because I don't like seafood. I LOVE seafood...it will just kill me. Wound up intubated in the ambulance and in the ICU for a few days. Followed up with a police report and filed charges. The person was convicted and sentenced to 90 days in jail, fines, and 5 years probation. Had to pay my medical expenses, lost wages, and punitive damages. The judge gave me a lifetime protective order as well.
If they think a little wouldn't be noticeable or that it will just burn off then why even add it in the first place?
My daughter is allergic to pineapple. Two bits of fresh pineapple and her throat starts to itch, and she can feel it swelling up. SO, no pineapple in the house. I have canned for my self but she gets none.
My mother in law has celiac disease and i am proud to say our house is the only house she hasn't gotten sick at/in. I scrub everything before, after and during. Thanksgiving is a process but I love and respect her so I will be overly cautious because I wear that badge of honor proudly.
I‘ve read about a case where the person with celiac had their own kitchen because no amount of scrubbing would help get rid of the contamination. That story put a healthy respect of allergies in me. Glad I read it.
Load More Replies...I was having problems with being tired all the time after eating wheat products. I figured it might be mild gluten intolerance. I'd been trying different gluten free products to test if eliminating gluten made a difference. Walked into Papa Murphy's Take and Bake pizza. Told them I needed a gluten free crust. The girl behind the counter looks up and say "Is this for Celiacs?" I said "no" and explained why. She said "Do you want us to use new toppings for your pizza because some of them may be cross contaminated with wheat flour....we can change our gloves too." I was so surprised they were willing to go to such lengths for me. I told them it was ok, they didn't need to....but I will always go back there because they cared enough to ask.
When I worked in food service, I’d anyone asked about an ingredient I always assumed it was an allergy and would ask. Sometimes it was just a preference and they would say that but if someone said it was an allergy I would take that very seriously. I don’t have any food allergies myself, thankfully, but my nieces have several each and if anyone neglected or purposefully messed with their food I would be in jail for murdering that person.

I have Celiac too. When I go to a restaurant, I always say I have a "gluten allergy" so they know to avoid cross-contamination. Of course it's really an autoimmune disease - our confused bodies think that gluten is the enemy, and attacks our small intestines if it finds a molecule of it. You get severie acute symptoms, can be sick for up to a week, and there are long-term effects (difficulty absorbing nutrients due to damage, and stomach cancer). Some people just don't get it.
My stepdaughter is a coeliac took us a few years to get to her diagnosis when she comes here for Christmas, we have separate cooking trays etc for her just in case of the slightest Cross contamination. We went on holiday to Italy and told all the eateries/hotel about her condition, no problems, even when we tried limoncello the staff went and checked if the alcohol base used was gluten free. Come home and go to an eatery that she's been to before so they know about the condition she got ill due to cross contamination. As for the "I'm not doing gluten "brigade, they can f**k right off.

YES! I had to cut out a ton of common allergens from my diet while going through some medical testing. I remember standing in the “allergy free” section of the grocery store sobbing because there was nothing and what was there wasn’t product that was made in an allergy safe food plant.

I have allergies to cinnamon too. Never happened until after I had my baby. Around the holidays they put these cinnamon scented pine ones near the grocery store doors. Makes my eyes water, and I can’t breathe. People think it’s an exaggeration. Pisses me off. I used to love it but I can’t cook with it. One guy I knew thought he could test this allergy out by boiling cinnamon potpourri on the stove. It was stronge. In the door, out the door in 15 minutes. Never got another date with him. A$$hat.
Yeah, folks get angry at the raw tomato thing, too. Like, AHA YOU'RE EATING KETCHUP! I saw RAW tomato, please listen, and yes it's a real allergy/intolerance. I do know exactly what you mean about people's reactions! became allergic to peanuts as an adult. It happened over years, first I could not tolerate eating peanut butter than I could not even touch peanuts or peanut oil. It sucks because I really liked peanut butter and jelly.
Benadryl *liquid may contain cinnamon. Pill form is better in this case.
Trust me the same exact thing happened to my mom but it is not as severe as a lot of the allergies here for my mom it does depend on the amount so she does still pit a little cinnamon but she doesn't let other ppl put ther "a little" cinnamon became then it depends on there amount of a little.
People don't believe you can be allergic to things like that. Most people think the big ones like; shellfish, milk, nuts. And don't believe that some are allergic to things like cinnamon, pepper, mustard, onions. And those things can't just be taken off.
Researchers argue that people are not only incompetent, but their incompetence robs them of the mental ability to realize just how inept they are. These kinds of people tend to overestimate their skill levels, fail to recognize the genuine skill and expertise of other people, and fail to recognize their own mistakes and lack of skill.
So what does this mean in this situation? In simple terms, the concept of food allergies was simply too complex or too unfamiliar to accept; hence they decided to attempt to shift the reality back to what they believed to know to be true and correct, hoping that the situation would simply just disappear and they’d have been right all along.
Admitting to mistakes takes effort, and no one really wants to do that. But it’s better to turn off any judgment and predispositions ringing off in one’s brain, listen to the person expressing their needs, and do the best one can do to accommodate them so that apologies don’t need to then be uttered at the coffin.

I had a customer say they were allergic to salt (at McDonald's where I worked many years ago), which prompted us to remove the french-fries-bowl and wash it, and wash the scoop. Then she asked for extra salt, and said she just likes them fresh... ?!? Well, JUST SAY THAT, STUPID! Or say you don't like salt. You would have had the fries 15 minutes ago.

I think if anybody is deathly allergic to anything, they shouldn't be trusting their lives to the kitchen staff. Even with maximum goodwill, misunderstanding, inattention or an accident can happen.
I’m a little confused on this one. If she can’t be anywhere near milk how is she going to Starbucks in the first place? I would think she would have issues with cross contamination at any coffee shop.
I was confused about that myself. I don’t know 100% but I would think that a person who is lactose intolerant (severely or not) could sit next to someone drinking a glass of milk and not have an allergic reaction. Unless the milk spilled on the lactose intolerant person or they kissed or something like that. I don’t think they could not even be in the same room as any dairy. Again, I’m not an expert or anything.

When I was working at Tim Hortons I learned from my manager we had to make sure we were preparing the right kind of soups and labelling them correctly because some people are allergic to certain meats, like chicken or turkey, but not all of them. After that I was so diligent on making sure people knew what they were ordering. However, we had many elderly folks as regulars. One man asked for the chicken noodle soup. We had turkey soup that day. I tried telling him this and he ignored me and I thought he couldn't hear. So I raised up my voice a bit each time but he still was adamant on calling it chicken. I tried to explain in case of allergies I wanted to make sure he understood me. Instead he hollered at me, accusing me of shouting and speaking to him rudely. At that point I just gave him the soup. But otherwise I was always careful.
I'm semi-lucky: my milk allergy doesn't cause anaphylaxis, but if I have too much then I get a major immunoresponse and have the worst case of the flu (symptom-wise) for the next two weeks. I try to keep as much of it out of my diet as possible, but holidays are a real bear for me because I have to cut bread, chocolate and most baked goods out of my diet for a couple weeks so I don't get sick from the holiday dinner.

I'm usually very Calm, but If it was me and my friend I would make a scene: throw the beverage on the idiot and scream at them, threatening to sue for homicide attemp. I try and avoid Starbucks. I have a milk protein intolerance and that is the one chain shop I found I need to specify semi skimmed milk because full fat gives me bloating and cramps, sickness feeling and I get painful acne where my skin dries out and rashes. It doesn't happen all at once and I admit I have chanced it sometimes by ordering cream from a coffee shop. However Starbucks I can't even drink a normal latte without feeling sick, the amount of times I went SKINNY latte and then the server would be all one latte and I'm yelling at them I said skinny. I gave up in the end

Me too! Very allergic! If I drink it I ulcerate clean through and bleed out. Can hardly walk and have to go to the emergency. It is like drinking drano. I have had a allergist tell me I couldn't be allergic to coffee because it isn't a protein. You are the first person I know that is allergic also. I get sick from coffee cups in restaurants. I drink hot tea. They will try to serve it in a coffee cup that has just been rinsed out and you can still smell the coffee in the cup when it's empty. Nasty! Use soap for God's sake!! That was in a National pancake restaurant.
Wow. One of my biggest pet peeves is doctors who think something doesn't exist because they haven't encountered it or weren't taught anything about it. It's arrogant and illogical to believe we've learned everything there is to know about how something as complicated as the human body works (or doesn't). And the implication when they tell a patient they can't be experiencing what they say they are experiencing is that the patient is nuts and/or seeking attention. I do not know how many people there are who have a psychological addiction to complaining to doctors for no reason, but I'd bet a large amount of money the real numbers are a tiny fraction of what many doctors seem to believe.
Load More Replies...I'm fatally hypersensitive to caffeine. An accidental cup of coffee is a trip to the ER to manage tachycardia. My heart races so fast it starts skipping beats and/or stops. It's a full on drug overdose.
I'm caffeine intolerant and my husband says that if anyone gives me caffeine then they have to look after me for two weeks.
Also have a coffee allergy. I'm lucky with my allergies as none are life threatening. My reactions mimic ulcer symptoms, except coffee. I will be sick for hours. Not life threatening but nausea for hours.
Same here! Caffeine-intolerant, it makes my heart race to the point I shake and feel faint. I've stopped asking for decaf, unless I know who's making it, I just go with a completely different drink.
Most decaf coffee has a trace amount of caffeine.
Load More Replies...As someone who has gone most of my life without drinking coffee, this seems weird to me. Not weird that she's allergic to it, weird that people pressure her to drink coffee. I don't get pressured to drink coffee. If it's offered, a "no thanks" is usually enough. I do wonder if that means she can't even go to a coffee shop, I can see how that can have more of an impact on socializing.

Load More Replies...Never heard of a coffee allergy, so I just looked it up. It's a bonafide food allergy and the reactions are extremely unpleasant. Symptoms range from skin rashes, to nausea and vomiting, and difficulty swallowing and breathing.
Thankfully, all’s well that ends well. What can we learn from this? A lot actually, but the main thing is potentially not to be a jerk to those with food sensitivities, preferences, and allergies. Because none of us are here to act as judge supreme; we’re here to have a good time and do good.

Load More Replies...Sympathy here from a fellow migraine sufferer. I was told that I may never know what triggers them, as there are so many factors that could combine to set it off. I take a variety of prescribed medications to prevent, but they will never be cured.
Ugh! I get them too. Thankfully not as often as I used to, because NOTHING helped, prescription or otherwise. I was getting one, sometimes two, a week. They would last for days and generally made life not worth living. Excruciating pain, dizziness, nausea, projectile vomiting, blindness in my right eye, fever, chills. I really wish they would stop calling it a migraine headache. The headache was just one of the symptoms of a migraine attack. Doc tried a preventative med, all it did was make me fall asleep whenever I sat down. At restaurants, work, stop lights. Miserable existence. I have a third degree burn on my thigh because of a migraine.
Load More Replies...I can't eat MSG or the foods that act like MSG in my system. Someone mentioned tomatoes - yes they have high glutimates but in their raw uncooked form the glutimates are bonded to the protein in the food. I can eat raw tomatoes with abandon. However when tomatoes are cooked, the glutimates break the bond with the protein and become free. These glutimates now are super charged and go through my body as MSG would - wreaking havick with my nervous sysyem and other things. When people speak of the umami flavor, that's the glutimates released from their protein bind. Cooked tomatoes makes a thick rich sauce, cooked mushrooms (example: Shittake, portobello- however button mushrooms are fine), slow roasted meat, making bone stock. All these things release the umami flavor, break down the bonded glutimate and those with high sensitivities to MSG can be very sick. It has taken me years to figure it out and a lot if research to keep me healthy. Eating out is a minor nightmare.
MSG occurs in some foods as they are cooked. I have no idea how you could avoid this.
My husband is highly reactive to man made MSG. It is naturally occuring in blood (red meat) and tomatoes, which he has no problem with. It is the man made MSG made in a laboratory that he reacts to. It's listed in ingredients under many different names: hydrolysed or hydrogenated starch, yeast extract, 621, 627, 632, flavour enhancer, or just listed as 'flavouring'. And you could find it anywhere. The general rule is anything flavoured beef, chicken, or tomato, stock cubes, chicken salt, gravies, but we've also found it in bread making flour and pastries. On top of that, you have the Russian roulette of the cooking process. If you fry something, sometimes the combination of temperature + type of oil will CREATE MSG. Which is how you get food packaging that will say on the front, no added MSG - but the ingredients has it listed.
I'm somewhat paranoid about buying pre-made foods. MSG trips the anger switch, and he can't control himself. He's never hit a person - but I have had to replace a lot of telephones.

Thought maybe the flu made me sick, so fried up a single egg a few days after and same reaction. Several weeks after I'm served a 6 egg dinner omelet. I start violently puking a half hour later and spend the next five hours between the bathroom and curled up in a ball on the bed. I have never been so sick in my life. Called to see what the hell was put in the omelet...all duck eggs. No one's fault, hadn't shared I was allergic/sensitive to the eggs as I just found out a few weeks prior...but what are the chances! Almost had to have a nurse friend run an IV for me. Once everything was completely out, still couldn't handle anything more than broth for four days.

If you are a good waitress/server/chef, then you TRULY understand. I am was diagnoat 7 years old to 83 different allegens...mostly food. Every day was HORRID, as my mom had to make lunchbox meals I could eat. My sister was dead for 3 minutes due to feather pillow allergies. She could take shots, as at the time in 1971, there wasn't any for food allergies. Thank God I grew out of most of them, but if school got to be toouch....a can of tomato juice took me out for 2 weeks. Way to work the system!!!😉

How can you laugh at people with allergies? I had a colleague who was allergic to dairy and eggs (including powdered eggs). It's in EVERYTHING. He has to double check everything he eats, and check with the restaurant staff how they make things. I'm really, really sorry for him, and so grateful that I got lucky with no allergies. I would NEVER laugh at an allergy.

I said to him he should try to remember asking for no onions to which the new bestie of my MIL, assisted by my MIL, went on a rant that allergies do not really exist. Funnyly enough, my MIL is extremely allergic to shellfish and I said deadpan „oh cool, then we can go eat shrimp sometime together!“. She looked at me like I wanted to murder her. Unfortunately some allergies intensify over time with repeated (non medical) exposure. Could be hives one year, the face swelling, then a compromised airway. Your mum is being disrespectful toward you. Medical exposure in treating allergies is done in microdoses and under supervision.
My family likes to treat Lactaid as some kind of specialty spice. I've been lactose intolerant for over a decade and I still need to remind my mother that her one and only child can not have regular milk. She's like, oh just take one of those pills. Lady! You plan on paying for it?! (It's insanely expensive and not compensated in any form where I'm at.)

Load More Replies...Whether its due to intolerance, allergy, or a personal choice it's just not worth messing around when people say that they cannot consume specific things, yes there are people who just like to be "different" they enjoy those moments of attention, but for everybody else it's because it's going to mess up the rest of our day, the next few days, or possibly and frequently land them in hospital. While not an allergy Ive been vegan for over 12 years and many years strict veggie before that and my body just can't handle having animal fats and proteins anymore. I've ended up falling foul to "we wanted to see if you'd notice" and "we thought it would be a laugh to see your face when we told you", and "we didn't have the vegan option" "we didn't think it really mattered as its a choice and not a medical requirement" over the years and suffered symptoms akin to sever food poisoning as a result, the body (well mine anyway), cramps up and attempts to expel the offending stuff within 20 to 25 minutes so on these occasions the funny person gets to share in the results.

My younger sister was vegetarian for most of her life. She worked in hospitality as a manager and her staff had one customer who insisted that their veggie meal had meat in it and threw a major tantrum threatening to sue etc. My sister marched over and informed the customer that she knew for a fact the meal was fine as she'd had some for her own lunch and was not projectile vomiting over the customer. I believe they dropped the subject at that point!
Is it possible to react just to specific meat products? For instance, if I burn the light out of bacon (like until it's bone dry), I can eat it. But if it still has high-fat content, I'm going to start throwing up. I also can't have most sausages (droewors and boerewors are some of the few exceptions).
Except yours is totally different. You weren't gonna die because you accidentally ate meat. Vegetarianism is absolutely not the same as allergies, no matter how sick it makes you to eat meat. My airway closes and I literally can't breathe when I eat cinnamon. 🙄

WTF do fizzy drinks have to do with diabetes? There are plenty of unsweetened fizzy drinks, and you are flat-out dead wrong if you think a diet coke is as bad as a regular coke for diabetics. There are several ways in which diet cola isn't great for you, but none of these compare to a massive dose of sugar to a diabetic (and none have anything to do with being fizzy.)
Load More Replies...I was having more than the expected number of cavities, it was a few every visit, and my dentist told me to cut out drinks with sugar, so sodas, juice, etc. Made a huge difference for me, now I might get one cavity every few years. So I drink diet cola for that reason. There are many reasons people need to have diet cola so if you are a server please just give them what they order..
I asked for Diet Coke as I have a stomach issue and normal coke makes me really sick. Also because of said stomach issue I was very very underweight and the nasty bar tender served me full fat coke. When I ended up throwing up everywhere I asked if it was the wrong coke and she had the guts to say she had given me that instead of diet because she assumed I was anorexic and didn't want the calories and that I needed "fattening up"! I successfully sued and the manager made sure her last job before she lost it (turned out she was on her last warning so I didn't feel too bad her losing it) was cleaning up my sick! Even if I was anorexic, it's my choice if I want to drink one drink over another! People in food/ drink service roles should not start changing what people are given over what they ordered for any reason!
if you are ever serving a drink and the diet/sugar free version of the drink and forget which is which, go back and get new ones! it might suck to do a tiny bit of extra work, but it’s worse watching someone get rushed to the hospital bc you decided to be lazy and disrespectful
I'm not diabetic, but last year I was in the ICU because a viral infection caused organ failure, including my pancreas. For a long time my body essentially produced no insulin at all. So I had to be super careful about what I ate and drank. Several times I had people substitute full sugar options rather than giving me what I ordered. Which could have killed me.
at my work (Coffee shop) sometimes we run out of the regular syrup and only have the sugar free left. but we always explain to people, in case someone has an allergy or intolerance to the sweeteners in the sugar free ones, as they can cause severe migraines and things. it takes us 2 seconds to tell someone but could save them a lot of pain.

SO MANY people working in fast food presume that the only reason someone would ask for a diet soda is that they're looking to lose weight. So if someone has a problem with lots of sugar, it's perfectly fine to diagnose them with body dysmorphia and fix it by giving them a soda with plenty of sugar!!!
There are some terrible additives in Coke, not to mention the even worse stuff that is put into "diet" Coke. Maybe enjoy some unsweetened iced tea and add just enough real sugar to taste or learn to like it without sugar? I always order unsweetened tea or just plain water. It is cheaper and better for the waistline.

I'm allergic to crab, shrimp and lobster. I typically won't go out to eat unless I can study the restaurant's menu first. I still can't believe so many restaurants have no online presence. I thought that became a "must" during the height of the pandemic.

We explained to her...she helps us order. My husband ordered spicy Garlic Tofu. A waitress that overheard the conversation came over and took my husbands plate before he could take a bite and said "The garlic sauce normally has chicken broth in it. The chef didn't substitute it. Let me get you something else that's vegan." She got a big tip and the manager got reamed over the coals in the review I left of the restaurant on every page I could find for veganism.
Also, a ton of southeast asian food is covered in sauce made with fish/other seafood, but then the sauce isn't listed. For me it's not too bad bc I'm just vegetarian, but yikes imagine having an allergy and getting thai takeout for the first time

Why the heck do people think people are walking around lying about their allergies all the time? The amount of people who would lies is far far less than the amount of people who have real allergies. If every person feels this need to test if someone's allergy is real, imagine what the person with the allergy goes through. Also my dairy intolerance is just bad stomach cramps and nausea, I'm not about to go parading that around now am I?
Probably because a lot of people walk around lying about allergies when really they just dislike the food they're claiming to be allergic to. I had a friend that would like and say she was allergic to tomatoes. She wasn't, she just didn't like fresh tomatoes. Her kid had a deadly nut allergy, you'd think she wouldn't lie about allergies, but she did.

When I pointed this out after noting it for a week and seriously watching to see if he would be alright, he got mad. He said he was deathly allergic to banana as well... So I asked what happens... He said his mouth and throat get itchy. But he can eat cooked bananas like in bread. I said I won't feed it to you if you don't like it, but if not actually allergic... He then said that soy he didn't like but bananas made him itchy. Duly noted. More for me.
Reminds me of the Malcolm in the Middle where his mother made brownies for a bake sale at the school. When the teacher asked "Are these nuts?" The mom said "Yes" and watched the teacher slam the brownie pan on the inside of the trash can multiple times. She handed the pan back to the mother and said "We have kids with nut allergies and we need to protect them" then smiled and said in a sweet voice "But they looked delicious!"

Presuming that the allergy is only affected by consuming corn, not exposure which would make it hazardous to have in the house, they need to enact a rule which limits who can bring dishes/drinks which contain corn. If you can't even touch certain foods, there should be strict restrictions, but if the problem "just" appear when you eat the stuff, what's wrong with letting other people eat what they feel like?

We've found a ton of recipes (esp the vegan, GF, soy, corn, dairy free green chili) that everyone can and does eat. And holidays when we host we've got nut free, vegan, veggie, lactose intolerant, celiac, and then those people who love or hate mushrooms.

Move to Sweden. Sure, we have corn starch, but corn bread and corn syrup are relatively rare here. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, sorry, but we do celebrate Midsummer's Eve. Boiled potatoes, pickled herring, sour cream and chives. Strawberries for dessert, and lots and lots of seasoned akvavit or vodka ("snaps"). No rotten herring then, I promise you; that's later, in August, and very few Swedes still eat that.

We had one waiter scoff when I confirmed that a dish didn't have garlic so we paid for our drinks and went to a different restaurant. Now this happened in the UK and business owners here have been fined massively and even jailed for not taking allergies seriously.
I'd go back to those restaurants and use their bathrooms. "Hey, you fed me the food that's causing this, you deal with the aftermath."

Day 2 on cayenne pepper intolerance, vomiting migraines. People seem to think it's ok if it doesn't immediately kill you. Yeah glad I'm not in cardiac arrest, but really? Just because I don't have immediate anaphylaxis to that thing doesn't mean it's a green light. Slowly bludgeoning me to death over months is still murder.
I found out I was allergic to bell pepper by eating an eggroll that had some inside it. The way it presented itself was me laying on the floor of the restaurant unconscious.

Use Henderson's Relish instead. It's delicious, vegan friendly and gluten free. It's not stocked in many shops outside of South Yorkshire, but you can order online from the company website and they ship worldwide.

Load More Replies...I have Celiac, and had investigate this. Lee & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is GF if made in the US. L&P Worcestershire Sauce contains gluten if made in Canada. In Canada they use malt vinegar - malt is derived from barley which has gluten.

When we entertained, they would bring their own gluten-free pizza, which they shared and it was delicious! I would get plain chicken wings and have dipping sauce on the side for everyone. Same with a veggie tray. I specifically got gluten-free ranch for her to keep exclusively on her plate so no one would double dip. Not a big deal and why in the world would someone want to make someone else sick?
They do have Gluten Free Worcestershire sauce. They also have vegan Worcestershire sauce now.

This is an interesting one. If you are allergic to something, then even a tiny quantity can kill you, but an intollerance normally means that you can in fact tollerate a very small quantity. Butter contains a lot less lactose than milk, as do hard cheeses, and it is possible that the person might be okay with that. Given the choice, I won't risk it, which means that McVities biscuits are out of the question, but if I am eating out, I will aim to pick the things containing the least lactose, without needing to have something made especially for me, and many dishes I can just not eat the part the might contain lactose, or ask for it without i.e. no custard or icecream.

I'm not allergic to sodium benzoate but no one should be ingesting it. It's a carcinogen and mostly in processed foods we be eating anyway. You are correct that in some areas it's in everything. I assume you live in North America (I'm in Canada and noticed it's in so many things now that it wasn't in 20 years ago.)

I have to read the label when I try a new product. When I eat out, I make sure the actually cook the food so that I can avoid menu items, I am allergic to. The interesting thing is, "only a little" can end up being far more dangerous. Allergic reactions are commonly quantity based, but can often happen at extreme levels from even small amounts. A lot of people have had some of thier worst reactions due to tiny doses of allergens.
I am allergic to apples. Apple juice, apple cider vinegar, can't touch them can't touch the tree. Read the ingredients on fruit flavored things you eat. If I don't read labels for pretty much ANYTHING it could be death
And most juices use apple for the base because it is cheaper. And very important: do NOT eat artificially flavored blueberry products. Apple is the substitute for blueberries. They just dye the apple chunks blue and still say 100% fruit flavored

I'm allergic to all capsicums, it's amazing how hard it is to explain. 'I'm allergic to bell peppers, but also hot peppers and anything like cayenne, chili powder. I get hives and a bit nauseous, but they don't have to worry too badly about cross contamination. One caterer left the bell peppers out of this incredibly spicy dish they made and presented it to me. Sigh, they really missed the concept.
Getting over cayenne right now. I used to be able to consume yellow red orange bell peppers but not green, people could never wrap their head around that, but it doesn't matter now because it's all bell peppers. I think mine's probably capsicum as well, because I was given it as an adjunct pain reliever and I only got sicker. Didn't put 2 and 2 together. Funny how you can read something tangential and get that "aha moment" thanks for your comment, you may have saved me 🙏 honestly bc after the cayenne which have me a migraine and vomiting I also got a slight throat soreness I recognized as my typical anaphylaxis reaction that didn't fully get expressed and didn't know why bc I hadn't cooked with any my known allergens. I can connect know past experiences with the capsicum family and I think my subsequent exposure to them may lead to anaphylaxis. My family had gaslight me for so long I don't trust my own gd reactions. So again thank you and now to look up EVERYTHING that has it in it. 🙏
Load More Replies...My sister is allergic to capsicum too. At the confirmation of my niece her other aunt thought it would be funny to make opulent chocolate muffins with chili in it for a joke. Luckily I ate one of them first and asked her and my SIL about it. They giggled and admitted it and asked me not to tell. I got very angry and told them in no unclear terms that they had one minute to put a sign on them or I'd tell my brother they'd tried to kill our sister. Also told them that there are several others in my family who react to capsaicin too, even though it's not as severely as my sister who'd gone to the hospital had she ate one. To their honour, they were sufficiently sorry and apologetic. It's just not funny to put something in a dish that's not commonly made that way to prank people. No pranks with food!

All the adults there knew about his allergy. We are very vocal and cautious about it. The twit apologized a few days later and I refused to speak to her from the party on for the rest of the time our husbands worked together. This happened nearly 20 years ago and it still can make me angry.
I got my mom's mushroom allergy. First time it was triggered was when we were at a friend's house before a wedding - my sister and I were the flower girls. Mom's friend, Aunt Carol had cooked spaghetti. We ate and then mom put us to bed. The wedding was the next day. I got up a few times cause I didn't feel good. The last time I got up, I went running for the bathroom. Mom got there in time to hold my waist-length hair back. As mom went for my toothbrush, Aunt Carol asked if I was sick and mom confirmed, then it clicked, mom asked if there were mushrooms in the spaghetti sauce and Aunt Carol replies yes, is she allergic? Mom said yes. I was ok after puking. I'm REALLY careful about mushrooms.

It’s infuriating to me that people get their feelings hurt when someone can’t or won’t eat the food they made. What you put in your body is a personal issue. Everyone needs to stop being food pushers. A lady at work said it was hurtful that I don’t eat on potluck days at work. I told her I’m the one who has to deal with the effects of certain foods on my body and it’s hurtful to me that she keeps trying to (figuratively) shove food down my throat.

This was in a hospital with a kitchen worker. They had to call in the dietician to find something my family member could eat while in the hospital.
I hate this "Just a little"! It might work if someone doesn't LIKE something, except if it's the texture they don't like. The taste can be hidden, not the texture. I'm a picky eater and I have some things that I gag if I get in my mouth, due to the texture, regardless of taste. (Not an allergy, sure, but my dinner is still ruined.) Load More Replies...FYI to the person who left out the onions but didn’t realize they included the wheat: Look in the gluten free section at most grocery stores. They usually have cans of gluten free cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup that my non-gluten intolerant husband can’t taste any difference with. I use it at Thanksgiving for green bean casserole—-for which I also deep fry my own onions (after soaking them in buttermilk and dipping them in gluten free flour), which aren’t hard to make and taste a helluva lot better than French’s (another thing my husband can’t taste any difference with).
That's probably a good thing. If her diet is that restricted I'm sure she wouldn't want to risk it.

They repeatedly assured her that there are no strawberries. It makes me so mad, considering that strawberry allergy is pretty common.
Perhaps there were no strawberries in her smoothie, but the blender had been used to prepare something with strawberries and only rinsed. Really allergic people must be very careful because of cross contamination: if the cook uses the same chopping board, for example, the food can trigger an allergy even if doesn't actually contain the ingredient.

Beside, I don’t want to be “That Person” who requires everyone else to tiptoe around them because of “their condition”. I have worked with too many of these drama queens on a power trip, and do NOT want to be lumped in with them, so I don’t mention it. I also opt out of them getting a cake for my birthday, as I know damned well they won’t shell out the cost of a large GF cake for everyone (GF foods ain’t cheap, let me tell ya). However, if someone else at work knows about it, and they’re not an a*****e, they’ll try to make sure there’s at least one thing on the buffet table that I (or anyone else) could eat if I wanted to.

If you want to show your workers you care about their happiness and well-being, sharing food is primal behavior. Not accommodating people with dietary restrictions is saying "we only care about doing the bare minimum." Yes, there are lots of Food Karens, but to tar everyone with that brush is the worst possible philosophy.
If you work in a big place, with lots of coworkers, it's absolutely impossible to accommodate every single person with dietary restrictions. I think there should be a variety of food and drinks and the ingredients should be clearly labeled, but every adult person is responsible for what they eat. There are fourteen ingredients in the European list of allergens, plus different people who are allergic to random stuff, diabetic people, vegetarians, vegans, people with religious restrictions...

Reminds me of the time I had a seafood sensitivity and my dad insisted on ordering fish and chips for dinner. I asked for pizza and he refused, so I refused to eat. He taunted me while eating his fish. He spent the rest of the night struggling to breathe because his airways had closed up. My sensitivity has diminished. His is a full-on deathly allergy.
My in laws do this kind of thing all the times. They cook meatballs in sauce then remove the meat and think I’ll still eat the sauce. Or cook my burger on the grill without foil.

I'm allergic to pepper too and it is so frustrating. A tiny bit isn't dangerous but I'm still getting a little swelling and very mucousy. If I bite into a peppercorn however then it's alot of swelling and wheezing for hours. Not sure how much for full anaphylaxis but I imagine only a few peppercorns will do the trick

My mom keeps forgetting that it's my sister who's allergic to shellfish, not me. I have an injected iodine dye allergy (yep, found out the hard way) and she keeps thinking that because shellfish have the element iodine in them I should be allergic to them.

Load More Replies...Every time I eat shrimp, I get that weird tingling sensation in my throat. Always wondered whether this may be some form of mild allergy. Or is this totally normal? EDIT: The sensation is mild and it never discouraged me from eating shellfish. But yeah, if you all say that's not normal, it probably isn't.
The only thing that should give you a tingle is fresh pineapple. This is because pineapple contains an enzyme, bromelain. It is essentially digesting the protein on your tongue as you eat, causing that tingling sensation. This does not happen with canned/cooked pineapple as the heat causes the protein to denature.

I’m not gluten intolerant and I’m not coeliac (but sympathise with those who are). I’m Anaphalactic - you know like bee stings or peanuts, etc. I come out in hives over my body, generally starting on the lips, never quite the same twice. I’ve blackout 3 times. Actually I have a recognised specific condition called Wheat Dependent Exercise Induced Anaphalaxis (WDEIA, which you can look up). It’s hard for people who think that gluten makes people ‘sick’ to appreciate that they’re playing Russian roulette with my life 😣
I was fooled into eating meat by a bully when I was young. I felt so infuriated and betrayed and she called me a dumb vegetarian. Thankfully I wasn’t allergic to meat but it was still a s****y thing to do. Never feed a vegetarian/vegan meat as they may be allergic to it

She offered me "I bought some gummies, would you like one?" and I said no because I'd heard her talking about them in the other room and knew what it was. She replied "Damn, I was hoping you would just take it and no ask any questions". She thought it would be fun to see me high considering how I am normally, but knew I wouldn't intentionally smoke or eat an edible. She didn't understand why I had a problem with that, or why I thought that raised some trust issues. It was the last time I went to visit her
Anything related to weed makes me so sick. Migraine with halo, nausea, vomiting, passing out, awakening to three days of terrible headache. As a roadie at rock concerts that's a tough allergy.

No it's the idea that they're faking it because they don't like it and if they don't taste it nothing will happen because their intolerance/allergy isn't real.
Load More Replies...Adding stuff to people's food after they've been informed should be considered assault. If you know anyone doing it to others, warn people not to trust that person. You can stop them from messing with someone's food once, but they need to know. And if you have relatives doing it to you on purpose, why do you even give them more opportunity? I can't believe that's the only way they're harmful for you. Walk away from people trying to make you sick.
It is legally assault here, and charges can be filed.
Load More Replies...Similarly I hate people who say they have allergies when they don't, they just don't like something. It really makes things difficult for people who actually do have allergies or intolerances. My ex kept saying that he was allergic to cheese. Has a bit of a sandwich with a slice of cheese on it? Immediate, violent, over-the-top reaction. Screaming. Yelling. "fainting". And always at the most inopportune times as well, like right before a big presentation or event. But he'll eat pizza and dishes with cheese cooked into them with no problem. I also had a friend who repeated claimed to be allergic to chocolate, but then admitted that he just doesn't like the taste of it so he tells people he's allergic. He's made fast food places throw out milkshakes because they didn't run the machine X amount of time before making his to make sure any trace of chocolate was gone. I no longer talk to him.
Yes, its annoying that the seriousness of real allergies gets watered down because people want to be "special" or want attention. Stops people taking allergies seriously. Often you can tell the type though, attention seeking elsewhere as well.

Even if it's not an allergy, but just an intolerance, a food preference because of religion, dietary choices or just because you don't like it, it's unacceptable to mess with people's food. But when it comes to allergies, the reactions can go from annoying symptoms to death. Some severe allergies are life threatening.
Yeah, I've got to say if someone doesn't want to eat something because they don't want to eat it, or because it might make them actually *die*, people really just need to respect when other people say no.
Load More Replies...My degree is in food science and I took whole classes in college to learn about food allergies. Trust me when I say I take them VERY seriously. Where I'm working now, we have several products that contain nuts. We treat them like they're potential bioweapons. Any equipment they touch gets a full breakdown and clean. After working with nuts we change our gloves and smocks. And outside food is not allowed inside the building. Industrial food production requires multiple levels of sanitation security to ensure the food is safe to eat.
It's not so hard, right? Someone's allergic to garlic? You don't put garlic in their food. Someone's simply dislike garlic? You don't put garlic in their food. Ugh
But when they're allergic I'd think better not use it myself or there may be a trace.
Load More Replies...I'm allergic to a ton of fruit but strawberries put me in the ER. A "friend" tested me years back and I ended up in the hospital all day and half the night without insurance. Still paying for it. People will tell me I'm not allergic to something just because they've never known someone who was. Where's the logic in that? And I know it's weird that I can ingest limes and lemons but can't get the juice on my bare skin. I didn't make me that way and I have no say in it. I'm also allergic to sunlight. Does that mean I'm a vampire?
my best friendhas celiac, it's super annoying bcuz peple never take it seriously because we're teenagers. like one time, we were at mcdonalds she specificly requested a gluten free burger. employee is scrolling on phone and nods blankly, we are eating while walking back to my place and my bestie says she doesnt feel well, three bites later and she projectile vomited all over the sidewalk. AND ANOTHER TIME. we were ordering pizza @pizza hut we asked for gluten free crust, repeated ourselves twice (after the mickey d's incident) and made sure to make eye contact while we said it. 20 mins later, were at my place, bestie takes a big bite of pizza and I do too, shes so hungry she eats 2 pieces then halfway thru our movie she runs to the bathroom and starts puking up blood. It was not gluten free. And that's the story of how pizza hut sent my bestfriend to the ER. But I am totally willing to not eat gluten for her she's my bestie and I love her ❤
You are a good friend! If you feel confident, you can ask your parents or hers to contact the restaurants and lodge a complaint - it can even be done anonymously if you and your bestie don’t want a confrontation or to get someone fired. But it would be a good way to raise awareness of gluten issues as sadly, you are correct, most people dismiss teenagers :( Hang in there, both of you! -from a random old fogey on the internet ;)
