Last year, we at Bored Panda covered a TikTok challenge that invites people to reveal the times they wanted very specific things but received something else entirely and were completely disappointed.

Ah yes, good ol' Shein. You do indeed get what you paid for. Easy ways to tell if a site is selling fast/knock off fashion: a) the price is too good to be true; b) it is impossible to contact customer support; c) reviews are impossible to find on the website or they are written in poor English; d) the website uses stolen photos of models from other sites and doesn't show their heads.

I can't fault shein I love it , but I bought 2 dresses for something I was going to , both under £30 1 went to charity shop as it made me look pregnant lol , the other was perfect and people were admiring it and asking who did I hire it from , it's hit and miss but better than wish lol

What some companies do is post pictures of clothes designed by other companies and then hire people to try and replicate these designs. However, this usually doesn't work out...as can be seen above.
You can also reflect on past successes. Chances are you've overcome stressful events in the past, so give yourself credit for it. Reflect on what you did during that event that was helpful and what you might like to do differently this time.
Also, work on developing new skills. When life is relatively calm, it can be a good idea to try things outside your comfort zone. From standing up to a difficult boss to picking up a hobby, taking risks helps you develop confidence that comes in handy when life veers off course.

I feel sorry for them because obviously people are buying these things out of desperation because they can’t afford to just go dress shopping. But at some point intelligence should overpower wishfulness and say “hey there’s no way a $15 dress is going to be that well made” and just go find something at Target or borrow clothes from someone. It’s more expensive to waste money on things you really can’t ever wear.

To be honest, even if the dress had been exactly like the left pic, it wouldn't have looked the same as it does on the model. A dress like that, to fit as skin-tight, has to be made specifically with the model's measurements. Or at least altered once the model tries it for the first time. It's also quite common that garments are pinned on the back of the model to make them look like they fit properly. It's pretty unlikely that a standard not elastic skin-tight dress can fit perfectly, unless the buyer has a perfect sample-size body in terms of measurements and height. A small size difference can change drastically how the dress looks. Also it looks like the two women in the pics have two different body types: the model has an hourglass/pear shape while the buyer is probably an apple/inverted triangle. The dress wouldn't have looked like it does on the model, because it's made to fit and enhance a specific body type.

90% of the clothes you see on models are clipped in the back, or the side not shown - the wardrobe people on the photo shoot use clips similar to the ones used to hang laundry outside.

I think the biggest lesson illustrated by this gallery is that you absolutely get what you pay for, and if it sounds too good to be true, it's from Wish. I think going thrifting would be a far safer plan for special occasion clothing.

Oh my goodness, please don't try to cut your own hair, it almost always ends badly. It's worth the money to pay a stylist to do it and not suffer for years with a horrible cut while your hair grows back out.

I was thinking the same! I don't remember ever seeing that dark blue hair on anyone (/haven't noticed it). Usually when people dye their hair blue it's either something bright like electric blue, or pastels/greenish sea foam or the like. But navy/dark blue not so often.

Both pictures are not the same person. At the beginning of the video it says that this is what I showed my stylist that I wanted. Then it shows her process of having hers done. Her hair was super dry and damaged looking before they started and the picture on the right is freshly done. It was a horrible color job.

Nope. This is just a part of the body where the ink bleeds out under the skin. I have a tattoo behind my ear, that is supposed to say "42", but only few years later it is often mistaken for a Fish or skin cancer.

She had given the tattoo artist what turned out to be a p*rno movie to look at instead of a my little pony video. The boyfriend "don't watch p*rn" so she never knew where it came from.

I went into a random parlor once and looked through their portfolios. First one had polaroids and bad lighting and bad staging on every one. And they were all cliche flash jobs. Pretty much. So I figured well one portfolio. Nope. They were all like that. I was astounded.

My sil is a stylist and she hates instagram because of stuff like this. People don't realize extensions or wigs are involved. Plus you have to bring the extensions with you because most stylists don't have them on hand.

It's exactly the same thing. When I was a teenager, we made skirts out of jeans ourselves. We also wore out our jeans and didn't need to pay high prices for jeans worn out by the company. I've even seen sneakers in store windows that had a pattern, white with gray smears, to make them look old.

I think the wired pieces are still in packaging mode. They need to be pulled apart to fill the tree out. Not saying it will look exactly the same as the ad image, but it will probably look much better - and more natural (less conical). Hope you worked it out!

My family had a Christmas Tree like this pretty much my whole childhood. We'd reuse the same one every year. Every time we took it out of the box in the attic it would look like the second pic because of us stuffing it in the box the previous year. It takes literally forever, but you can fluff every branch out.

The first one makes you look stupid. The second one is a DIY effort to copy the first one. I cut my own hair with a buzzer. You need some practice and do it in steps. And for something like that, you need a barber/stylist.

People need to quit getting tattoos done in their "tattoo artist" friend's kitchen. Scratchers can and will give you a potentially deadly disease! Always go to a reputable shop that is CLEAN. I am heavily tattooed and have never once gotten a bad tattoo or an Infection.

I think it is covered with tattoo tape. It's like a very thin, clear, medical grade tape that keeps moisture out. Like a second skin.

OK seriously, where are people getting these tattoos? You can't expect your friend who bought a tattoo gun off of eBay to do the same kind of work as a professional. And if you got this at a shop you got ripped off. Never let someone tattoo you without approving a stencil of the work first!

Exactly. You get what you pay for. People also need to check out the artist and shop before committing. Tattoos are generally forever, unless you can afford laser removal.

I don't understand all those bad tattoos. Don't they draw a stencil first, which is then placed on the skin for the customer to see if it's what they imagined (and for the tattooing process)?! At least that's what tattoo artists here in Germany do.

I keep commenting the same thing. My tattoos were stenciled on me first to make sure I liked the design and placement before I let them start with the gun. All the shops I've been to in the US follow this procedure, so I wonder if these are amateurs working out of their garage or something?

Needle was the wrong type. If it's your first, I'm sorry. But always do research and DON'T go with the cheapest artist available. Most artists showcase their work either on Instagram or professional websites, always check it out and read reviews.

This might look completely different standing straight up. The mannequin also has quuiitte unrealistic proportions, so the result must differ. Also: lighting.

A lot of times the clothing is clamped in the back to make it completely form fitting on the model or mannequin; they hide it really well in photos for ads. Unless you can afford haute couture, you're gonna end up with disasters like that, especially if you're ordering from Wish or others like some of the shadier sellers on Amazon.

I made the mistake of buying some cool looking "goth" clothes from Wish years ago for CHEAP and certainly got what I paid for. I usually pay upwards of US $100 for Royal Bones or Tripp pants and found some similar designs on Wish for US $15 and got complete garbage that I had to donate because they were so terrible and poor quality.

The outfit itself is very nice, but it is sized for someone much taller. Shortening the tunic, sleeves and pants will make it look much better on her.

I think one of the biggest problems is that the one on the right doesn't look finished, at least from my comp. It looks like all the hems aren't sewn back. Like someone just cut the fabric, tossed it together and called it a day.

Hair doesn't just miraculously style itself! If you bring a photo to your stylist, ask them what you need to do to get the look once you have the cut! If you aren't ok doing the work, don't get the cut!

A good, professional stylist will tell you out right if you choose a style that just won't work with your hair type. A lot of short and mid-length cuts are going to entail styling as well.

Ladies, always beware of professional hair style shots. A large number of the models in these shots are wearing styled wigs, which will always look better and thicker than natural hair. Try to check the parting (it may be hidden!) - if it looks "thick" it's probably a wig and, therefore, your own version will look different.

Is it just the pattern at the scalp she wanted? I have no idea about this hair type, but can those sections be smoother regardless of the rest of the braids in order to get something close to that pattern? Again I’m a complete moron when it comes to this hair type. Mine is thin and wavy.

She wanted her hair to lay down at the scalp like the first pic...however the first pic is featuring a model who has straightened her hair via a relaxer before braiding. That will give the hair a completely different texture, feel and look. She wanted that look, but did not bother to do the relaxing part first...so her curly-at-the-roots hair will not lay down the same way.

not even close to the same. The tips of the nail are to wide and not even thickness. They are not straight sides and flair at the tip. They look like the tech was in a rush and never even checked while they did the nails for these issues. plus the tip of the nail (the white) is thick thus leaving a visual bump.

I just don't have the patience. The ones on the right look more thick and durable, which is a win in my book, lol. Look, it has been a long time since I have been in a tattoo shop and it was for others not myself, but they got a whole drawing from the artist, questions answered, an outline the artist would use, etc. It's going to be with you for life, get to know your artist As for the clothing ones, do more diligence when finding sites especially from social media ads. It doesn't matter that they sell Americanized/Western clothing with Kardashian looking models, google their name and look up reviews including from BBB, etc. Is the contact information more than a page, does it include a real address with a company you can find? Etc. You'll start to find a trail that perhaps makes you think twice.

If you're buying a product from a company like Wish, they have no transparency on who is making the products being sold, and no policies in place to ensure the quality of the products or the conditions they are produced in (i.e. child/slave labour, safety of product/materials etc.) Often what happens is that a seller on the site will use photos by legitimate crafters without their permission, then put together a cheap estimation of how the product is actually made. Bernadette Banner on youtube did a breakdown comparing one of her dresses to a knock-off which was sold using her own photographs.

Because if that beautiful beaded garment with an intricate pattern and real feathers costs 23 dollars... 😬 I can guarantee it's either a scam or plain labour exploitation. I mean, the cost of the fabric itself would be much more of the price you're paying for the final garment! People, when it's too good to be true, it's probably not true...

I really dislike all the clothing pics. I'm just so sick of fast fashion, there's everything wrong with it. It's awful from both environmental and human rights point of view. I've seen some rise in buying second hand etc. for these reasons, but I wish we could get faster back to buying less but much more expensive and excellent quality clothes that we would take a good care of. Learning basic sewing skills etc. that would enable most people to fix anything that breaks etc. & taking pride and joy from maintaining something that serves you well instead of constantly wanting something new.
