At some point in life, usually between dessert and the third glass of wine at a holiday gathering, it happens: a relative—often an elder, often unprompted—lets something slip that quietly detonates your entire understanding of the family tree.

Like how grandma was once engaged to a man who later founded a cult in Oregon. “But he was very sweet,” she says, as if that’s the relevant part.

One TikToker asked people to share their own unhinged family stories like that—and sure enough, the internet had plenty. Scroll down to read the most chaotic ones, and if you’ve got one too, the comment section’s waiting.

Two people walking on a forest trail surrounded by tall trees, evoking a sense of mystery and family lore. Someone I know was SAd by her dad, her uncle took him hunting in the woods and they had an ‘accident’ and her dad never came back and no one ever got arrested, justice was served

I dated a girl whose father SA'd her at the age of 3. Her brothers walked with her to the corner to tell the cop. He didn't believe them so nothing was ever done about it. Her older brother told me about it after we broke up. Their dad was shanked in prison after being caught in a murder for hire. Justice? Not in my eyes. Should've suffered more.

Back in 1963, my dad was Sergeant, First Class stationed at Ft. Greeley in Alaska. One day, my two older brothers, Rick and Earl, had climbed up and were sitting on the billboard right outside the base entrance. My dad saw them as he drove up, got out of the car, and yelled, "Down! Now!" They panicked, and scrambled down the ladder, but Earl lost his footing and fell the last five feet onto some broken beer bottles. As Earl stood back up, bleeding, dad walked over and back-handed both of them and knocked them down, right in full view of a bunch of soldiers right inside the gate. He was reported. But instead of court-martialing him, the Army promoted him to Master Sergeant to encourage him to retire with a Master Sergeant's pension. The funny thing is "Dad" was actually my maternal grandfather. So I had the same kind of childhood as my older siblings because the Army decided it was ok to sweep child abuse under the rug.

When I told my mum that my brother had been doing the same to me between the ages of 4 and 8, her reaction was to put me in care and keep my brother at home with her. I mentioned it again to her decades later to ask why she'd done that, and her reply was: "Are you sure that it even happened? I don't remember you telling me".

People Are Revealing The Most Unhinged, Depressing And Awful Things They Know About Their Families I grew up in a small town and there was a woman whose husband was an awful drunk and would beat her horrifically. She had these dogs that were always kenneled, and horribly mean and she would spend a majority of her time with them. One day she came to my grandmothers house and was really badly beaten. The next day her husband went missing. After a while no one missed him and it was just considered he left her and she was better off. Town people could care less where he went. Eventually she confessed that she k**led him and fed him to her dogs.

I heard about something like this. A woman, who was victim of a terrible domestic abuse, killed her husband. When her husband was bathing, she slit his throat and then dismembered him. She buried pieces in the woods. She was caught just a few days later, but it was decided that she killed in a fit of rage and emotion and was not responsible for her actions. She had to spend some time in psychiatric care, but she didn't go to jail.

I dated a health inspector once and just jokingly mentioned that I once said if I ever remarried I'd just order a bride (not under age). She looked at me and asked if I was serious? Turns out one of the restaurants she inspects does this. You give them $10G and a detailed description and they find a girl who wants to come to America. Once here though, like her or not, you're stuck with her unless she wants to go home and you pay for that too.

People Are Revealing The Most Unhinged, Depressing And Awful Things They Know About Their Families My dad was murdered in 1999 from a carkjacking. My sister and I were in the car and witnessed it. Almost 2 decades later, a false documentary came out about the k**ler saying he was innocent (he claims he didn’t do it but there is overwhelming evidence against him). It got popular and many celebrities got involved to try to get him released. Luckily, he’s in jail for life. But it was traumatizing watching the public get manipulated about the case and have to relive that trauma.

I worked for a Public Defender's office for many years. I have seen several "murder shows" on TV that featured different defendants that our office represented when I worked there. Most of these shows omit and/or exaggerate details to where they aren't even telling the story right. Some of the shows were unduly sympathetic to the defendants and some twisted the narrative to make the crime sound worse than it already was. I don't trust any of them anymore.

Elderly woman covering her face with hands, reflecting on unhinged pieces of family lore in a quiet home setting. My grandmother fell pregnant to her boyfriend when she was 19. He left her because of it being a scandal and married her bestfriend. She had the baby and was forced to give him over to the nuns running the orphanage. She tried to find him but they didn’t keep records back then. When she was 74, he found her (another long story) and they had a beautiful relationship catching up on their lives in between. Until he died 18 months later, in a train accident. He was the driver. She grieved her son’s life twice.

Especially in Ireland (as far as I know) the system of "no records about adoptions" in institution often run by the Catholic church was so vile. One of the reasons why many people dislike (Christian) churches so much. (Imo churches do real unbiased charities as well...well, protestant churches in Germany -which I know- are rather enlightened).

And why did that happen? Because of a perverse religious cult that without any need or logical ground declared single mothers "impure" and worthless. whereas the man who impregnated her could live a happy life. Fvck religion.

Drowning doesn’t always look like drowning as portrayed in fiction. When my daughter was 4 she jumped in a pool and sunk. She was on the bottom of the pool, waving one hand around and somehow I just knew. I pulled her out and she asked me why I pulled her out of the water for a few years after. I didn’t know that wasn’t an uncommon presentation of drowning until many years later. She was a good swimmer.

That's what happens if the access to birth control is restricted by law, societal norn, faith, limited resources or lack of education.

Exactly the reason that birth control should be readily available to those that need it. Not everyone is meant to be a parent.

My thoughts too, if I was forced to do it, I’d be the same, but adopt after birth for the one who made it, they deserve love and hugs and not an uninterested mother.

I can believe someone uses abortion as a means of birth control and has multiple abortions. There are also people who get multiple cosmetic procedures. A facelift is riskier than a suction abortion, in part because of the anesthetic used.

i dont know about this. Abortion isnt just going in and taking a pill abortion is a medical procedure and doctors dont just give you one everytime you ask. its complicated and it is painful and very hard on your body. anyone that has had an abotion for any reason even if its purely absolutly not wanting kids is going to think twice after doing it once becuase of the aftermath of the procedure so to say someone is using it as birth control is usually what people who have never stopped to talk to someone who has had one would say. While I have never had one my friend is a nurse and I have seen and heard and help with the physical and emotional pain in the aftermath.

Three people that have been in her care have died, two husbands and a neighbor.. she almost got our great Uncle Joe, her son. He went to go stay with her and he started getting sicker and sicker until he finally moved out and got better... She's always given some weird vibes.

I was concerned when a friend of my mom's cheerfully said that she inherited everything from her mother because "Of course I took care of her when she was sick" (her siblings got nothing). My mother often complained about my father, so the friend offered to tell her how to get rid of him. My mother instead got rid of the "friend" - through non-lethal means.

People Are Revealing The Most Unhinged, Depressing And Awful Things They Know About Their Families Took an Ancestry DNA test hoping to find my birth parents (I was adopted as a baby). Didn’t find them, but I did find a “2nd cousin” on my dad’s side. She didn’t know who her dad was either, so we were just two mystery babies trying to make a family tree from scratch. Fast forward…I get my original birth record from the state, find my birth mom on Facebook, and literally messaged her like “Hey lady… this you?!” She said “Sure is!” And that’s how we started to get to know each other after almost 40 years. Found my bio dad too! Turns out I’ve got a whole squad of sisters I never knew about (hello sisterhood). That “2nd cousin”? Yeah, she was actually my half-aunt. Her half-brother = my father. Apparently my grandpa was out here planting seeds from Maine to Florida. Still finding cousins like it’s a Netflix docuseries. But wait—it gets better. On my mom’s side, I kept getting DNA matches with the D’Arcangelo family. Asked my birth mom, she’s like, “Oh no, they’re just old family friends.” Riiight. Got her to do her own Ancestry DNA test and BAM! She shares D’Arcangelo DNA. Her siblings? Don’t. So turns out her mom had a secret affair with Mr. D’Arcangelo himself. And the woman my mom grew up calling “just a close friend of the family”? Yeah. That was her half-sister. I basically cracked open a multigenerational secret with one little spit test.

That's actually tragic. Loving people you are not allowed to. Knowing there is no chance of a life together. That if you try, more than just your lives are at stake. Perhaps dad hated his mom because he was abused by his "father" for the "sins" of the mother. He would have grown up resentful, I'm sure. I hope he gained a little compassion for his mother so that he could forgive and let it go - for his own sake.

Reply to T'Mar: depression can be very hard for family members. However, education about mental illnesses -which should be provided for family members- teaches you to never say something like "either k!ll yourself or stop talking about it to a person considering s*****e. Yes, his decision in a situation where his judgment is hijacked by disease. But in ths specific case: poor to evil behavior of the mother.

It's wrong to blame the survivors though. My uncle self-unalived before I was born and my father, mother and his siblings all blamed his widow. The only person to blame is the person who did it.

Young man sitting on bed, looking thoughtful and reflective, relating to unhinged pieces of family lore. I was working in pathology. My father asked me what was the most common and successful ’painless’ way people unalive themselves. So I told him. 2 days later he does exactly what I said. He failed. I gave him the wrong dosage/ amounts. I have never spoken to him since. How could he think it was OK to print that guilt on me?

Well if OP didn't ask why he wanted to know s/he was negligent IMO. Also dislike how s/he turned this $uicide attempt into something about them. Not showing any concern for his well-being, only what if s/he ended up feeling guilt over this.

My mom used to work as an EMT or an equivalent in the good ol' time. They were two per ambulance. They've been called several times to an address, same guy trying to end it but failing every time. So at about 5th time my mom's partner asked the dude about his method, turns out he goes to the bathroom with a knife then tries to slice his throat above the sink but it gets too painful and he stops. The partner then, in frustration, tells him "next time just throw your head back and go for it in one swift motion". The nex call turns out the guy listened.

honestly i ask weird questions like this all the time but im not gonna follow through. its more out of morbid curiosity. I was dating a surgical tech in the trauma dept so I asked him how much force would it take to stab someone with a screw driver. I wasnt gonna do it but I had seen it on a tv show so I was curious on if it was possible and how hard. I didnt give him that context but luckily he was used to my weird questions and told me surprisingly not that much. so to answer your question why wouldnt he?

Not sure if he was running from the military or creditors, but he changed his name, got married and had more kids with his new wife and surname. A long time ago, I had a serious problem with my c5-c6 disc, and I did become addicted to narcotics they gave me for the pain. (It actually took about 2 1/2 years to find the problem), and of course I had to keep getting stronger and stronger pain meds as I became acclimated to the opiates. Recovering from that was no fun.

Miraculously she's still out there still alive, still active. She's been using so long you could call her Mother Theresa because of the length of her Habit.

People Are Revealing The Most Unhinged, Depressing And Awful Things They Know About Their Families I took a ancestry dna test and after I got the results back it said I was related to a lot of people that I had no idea who they was. Well come to find out my grandmother on my dads side had an affair with a man named verlan and he’s my real bio grandfather. They’ve all passed before I found out all the results and was able to ask about it but apparently my grandmothers sisters knew and a few other family members but never told me. it was definitely very unexpected. My gma passed too before I could see or meet her. But through my dads test we found his dad, turns out his mother (middle child of 15 kids, west coast NZ) was married to a pretty good guy, had three or four kids with him, and about 11-12 through affairs which she adopted out - including my dad. The whole family was like this, and our family fb page for reconnecting via us grandkids has been a pretty wild experience for us all. There’s an insane amount of us.

No! Think about it for a second. It means a social case worker got a woman pregnant whom he knew to be an a*****e/neglectful parent. It was someone using a position of power to take advantage.

Eh... How/why did dad get her pregnant after her older brother got taken away? Yes the neglect could have started after she was pregnant again so maybe he didn't know yet. How likely is that? How did she meet the father of OP? If he was the case worker for the first case it's not a heroic a story as it sounds. Or maybe the case worker isn't his bio dad but became his dad by adopting.

Did the case worker adopt the child and become Dad or what? Surely if the case worker was the biological father, being assigned the case would be a huge conflict of interest

And she just escaped but wasn't caught when she got married despite a marriage certificate being a legal document. Where I live background checks are done before marriage licenses are given.
