People will hurt you and take joy out of it even if you're the most nicest person in the world
And sometimes those people are called family.
One of my first boyfriends admitted that he was abusive to me because "you're too nice and someone has to toughen you up." Left him the second I was able to.
Good on you. Normal, psychologically healthy people appreciate kindness in people, they won't abuse it or see it as something to target.
Load More Replies...Oh, yes. And while hurting you, they'll claim they "love you so much". And that maybe they'd be nicer to you, if only you tried harder to please them. That's not love. That's abuse.
Oh, yeah. The famous, "this hurts me more than it hurts you," line. Rrrriiiight.
Load More Replies...People oftentimes mistake kindness for weakness. This happened to me several times but they found out immediately that wasnt the case with me. Be careful out there.
Just ignore them. It is the best way to return their abuse. No headache required🙂
Load More Replies...Preaching to the choir. I read Agony Aunt columns about people struggling with sadistic, narcissistic family members, and I'm screaming, "Get the hell out and block them!" This loyalty to DNA is beyond my comprehension. If you wouldn't put up with this from strangers, ask yourself why you put up with it from family.
Its a vicious cycle. They treat you like s**t and then convince you that you're the one with the problem, the bad one, the stupid one, the ugly one. Then you become anxious to please and will put up with any kind of treatment because they've made you feel so worthless and you're desperate to be liked. I know. I've been there.

Spiders have exoskeletons that they shed. When you see a dead spider, it might not be a dead spider. It could just be it's old skin, and the spider is now somewhere else, and bigger.
Oh good!! I always feel sad to see a dead spider in the house. Good to know it may just be an old exoskeleton and ol spideys just fine! (You gotta admit, that's one cute spider in the photo. Look at those great big cute eyes!)
I've had a zebra jumping spider that had decided to live inside a large framed portrait near my coffee maker and - one day - he just wasn't moving anymore. I was sad, thinking maybe he couldn't find a way out from behind the glass... but maybe he did. Jumpers are just so damn cute!
Load More Replies...You have to be careful if handling a tarantula not to drop it or it's body could crack and they die.
Oh, I'm one of those freaks who likes spiders and won't kill them. I'll move them to an unused area of my flat and let them live out their lives. Back when I gardened, I'd feed the lawn grubs I dug up to the funnel spiders who lived around my foundation.
You are not immune to being brainwashed. People don't get sucked into cults because they are stupid. It could happen to you. Also, **cults are not always religious**, they just often are.
Cults draw you in by making you feel smart and appreciated and loved, they douse you in affection and praise, and then they use your trust in them to isolate you from the voices of reason in your life.
If someone is being super nice to you for a long time, making you feel special, and then they start telling you that you should cut off multiple people in your life, especially if it's the people telling you that something is wrong, that's a red flag. They will tell you that those people are unsupportive and that you don't need people like that in your life. This is a systematic way to cut off any resistance so the only reasoning you will hear is their own. And all the while they will seem so kind and supportive. Do not get sucked into this trap.
A close friend of mine (total atheist) was sucked into joining an eco cult. Sounded great - live off the land, save the environment, peace and love… until she found out the leaders controlled everything members did including who they had to have sex with, what they could and couldn’t eat etc, She had to flee the country to escape.
Pimps do the same thing. Pretty much anyone who wants to control you follow these steps.
I think I'm waaay too cynical and self contained. A lot of people who fall into this are, with the best will in the world, needy for something.
I remember learning about cults in psychology many years ago. I think they generally target people who appear to be lonely, so might be more likely to be convinced that being part of a cult will make them less lonely.
Load More Replies...Scientology tried to lure me in by telling me I was stupid. Just saying.
What a way to lure people into their cult, by saying they're stupid. I'm glad you're way smarter than these people.
Load More Replies...I wouldn't trust anyone who was super nice to me, even for a second.
Probably everyone thinks this but I can't imagine being less susceptible to brainwashing. I barely care about my OWN opinion, no way am I going to follow anyone else's beliefs. Maybe it's the "immunity from peer pressure" from the 'tism, maybe it's the complete discomfort at compliments etc (maybe it's maybelline) but if anyone was agreeing with everything I said and never had a different opinion I'd be concerned that they were either people pleasers who never voiced their own opinions so nothing could be taken at face value or just plain nuts. Even I don't agree with me 100% of the time!
Cults don't always recruit by appealing to opinions or beliefs. The rely on fundamental human needs and innate cognitive bias. In fact, there's a good body of evidence to suggest that people who believe themselves to be less susceptible to such manipulation are actually *more* likely to be because they're less sensitive to the warning signs. Look up "the illusion of invulnerability". I think you'll find it interesting.

Sometimes when an elderly person falls and ends up with a broken hip, it’s actually the hip breaking that causes the fall.
I have osteoarthritis and I am so scared of the future, ngl.
Load More Replies...Sadly the mortality rate is high for the elderly after breaking a hip.......
Build up of toxins in the body reaching the heart. Usually within a fortnight.
Load More Replies...So, my dad defied the odds. At 91, he got into a car accident (his 2nd ever), broke his pelvis and had a non-displaced breastbone fracture. He was up and walking within 3 weeks and lived for another 3 years. Go figure.
I have the same. I call my Mother 'Mrs Garfield' after the famous cat because she has nine lives. 80 yr old, Diabetic, broken an ankle in half, broken a hip with now a titanium rod, cancer ( which she has beaten), leaky heart valve ( which now doesn't need repairing) osteoporosis, nearly died of Sepsis in childbirth having my Brother. She's insane. If she was in a plane crash, I bet she would be the only survivor with many injuries but would miraculously recover. Maybe I should call her 'Wolverine' instead with her healing powers. Amazing woman. True grit.

Should put the writing on the ceiling so you can read it from the floor.
Load More Replies...And also when an elderly person falls they get a rush of endorphins and adrenaline. These speed up the heart rate. Causing sometimes cardiac arrest or stroke. Which is also why lots of fall cases never leave the hospitals but pass away. Too much heart stress a they come down hard from the rush of it all. And depression because now they feel more like a burden.
That doctors admitted to euthanizing patients at Memorial Medical Center hospital in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina because their only other option was to leave them to die. Several were charged but have defended their decisions as the only humane choice in an impossible situation. One patient in particular was not terminal, but due to his size, was unable to be moved.
Don't get fat, kids. Despite all this body positivity it really isn't good for you. From a fat bloke.
Why is euthanasia okay for pets but not for humans? This needs to change
If you are leaving a concious patient to drown because they can't be moved, then the only humane thing to do is to offer them the option. Frankly, I believe that it should be every patients right to request euthanasia rather than face a slow and painful death, irreversable physical or mental deterioration, or indignity and loss of independance.
During the peak of the pandemic, a doctor publicly admitted that they treated selectively the covid patients who had chances to survive. The ICUs were overcrowded, there was not enough medical staff or equipment - and patients kept coming in. And some of them, with underlying health conditions had little to zero chances of survival. Terrible to make such decisions.
Evacuations in the situation at Memorial were hard. They had to go so many steps up to a roof. I guess if they couldn't carry him up there, they didn't want to leave him to die.
I can't find any credible info anywhere to support the euthanasia aspect of this story. Yes, ppl died and its likely that the staff ultimately had to leave them dead or alive or die themselves, and yes some a$$hole tried to prosecute one of the Dr's (and failed miserably) but nowhere is euthanasia discussed.
That is IMO the moral thing. In a crisis, the sensible thing to do is to be utilitarian - focus on saving the most people. If it would take substantial effort to get someone out and stable, or the things they need are gone, and you need to go, like, yesterday, you need to leave them, or else the safety of others could be jeopardized. And given that if you live them, they will die, they can either die quickly or slowly. I would say it is the humane thing to do to kill someone who you must leave behind (or else others will die) instead of leaving them to suffer.
I lost my leg to a bug bite that I had no knowledge of getting. One day my ankle swelled up and I thought it was just me getting old. It got progressively worse, this was during covid so I didn't have a lot of options. After being up for a few days from pain and running a fever I went to the emergency room and was diagnosed as having a sprained ankle. They gave me pain medication which helped me sleep. I woke up after 18 hours to blisters under my ace bandage. I don't have any memory of anything until I woke up after my third surgery of them removing more and more of my leg. It was necrotizing fasciitis.
I lost everything from a medical misdiagnosis. I am currently just about starving to death as disability doesn't pay enough even though I worked my whole life and did everything I was supposed to.
I'm so sorry to hear this. Can you not get compensation for misdiagnosis in this sort of case?
Those kinds of medical malpractice suits usually cost lots of money
Load More Replies...Believe it or not, this happened to one of my kids. He had a bone infection in his ankle. The doctor said it was a sprain, and I pushed back telling them I knew something else was wrong because he had a fever. I went another doctor, got his bloodwork done, and they rushed him to the children’s hospital. He would have lost his foot at 12 years old if I hadn’t gotten a second opinion. He’s fine now. ❤️
Load More Replies...I worked for over 25 years straight non-stop and I had to get a lawyer which cost money and wait a year to get Disability. I only have Medicare Part and B, not C and D which covers prescription, dental, vision and hearing, so I have to pay for all of my Prescriptions out of pocket. I have been through multiple bouts of Cancer and used up my Savings and 401K the first 3 years that I was off work. The Cancer has wrecked my Spine, Left Hip bone and I have also had both of my knees diagnosed with Severe Arthritis in the right and Severe Arthritis and tears in my cartilage, fluid buildup and damage to my Tendons and Ligaments. I spent 25+years nonstop running around on concrete floors and doing hard physical labor 8-16 hrs a day. I would LOVE to go back to work and do the same type of job I had before I got sick, because my Disability is just a FRACTION of what I used to make.
Reads like the bite from a brown recluse spider. Even prompt response can only contain the toxins and limit the extent of the tissue loss. This case seems like one that could have been stopped well short of this extreme outcome.
Could be, but I had a mosquito bite on my lower leg that got infected, fortunately antibiotics cleared it up, then I had another this summer, and I didn't wait around to see if it would just get better.

So sorry to see this. I am so glad my doctors (at least one of them) were on the ball. In ER I was out of it. Nec Fasc and undiagnosed diabetes put me there. I was nearly comatose. I don't remember much. I was told afterwards that the doctors were getting me ready for air lift to a larger centre. Another doctor said that is going to take at least 4 hours she'll be dead before she gets the treatment she needs. I was apparently in the OR in less than 20 minutes after that. I was in and out of surgery and the ICU for a couple of days. My sisters said we sat in the ICU waiting room and saw you when they moved you to the OR then we moved to the OR waiting room until they brought you back to the ICU. The surgeon wasn't finished with me yet but it was no longer life and death so I went home for a few days while he figured out what he was doing next. I was at the hospital 3 days a week for dressing changes. A couple of day surgery visits. It was 9 months before I was healthy again.
Gaze Detection - The human brain seems to be able to sense if someone is staring at us, even if we do not see the person at all. This ability has probably protected us from predators. So, if you have sometimes felt that someone was staring at you, chances are someone really was.
A few years ago I found weird footprints in the snow. A hand sized hoof print and a 2nd one 6 ft. apart, the last one was just one barefoot print. Nothing around prints had been disturbed. The snow had nothing around it. Now I recently saw a woman with the same hoof print around her house and she has no idea what they are either. She lives in Tennessee. I take my dogs out any time between 3 am to 4 am and I have had a feeling of get back to the house now. I'm soft yelling at the dogs let's go get inside. I have felt like when I turn around I will see something there as I lock the screen door. We are in the city. We have an apartment just about 12 ft .away. It hasn't happened lately thank goodness. But there was something that happen before the snow foot prints of other barefoot prints. Creepy.

We *are* extremely good at gaze detection within line of sight, and *quite* good within peripheral vision based on movement cues. But when we don't see the person at all? This is where the evidence needs to be extremely robust (extraordinary claims etc) and unsurprisingly it isn't. Of course we've all had the experience of feeling watched and realising we really are being watched - but that's confirmation bias complicated by cases of the "watcher" reacting to our own reaction.
Yep. Read about a study on this a while back. Basically just confirmation bias.

When Judith Barsi (The voice of Ducky in The Land before Time) was m*rdered by her father, she was halfway through doing voicework for All Dogs Go Heaven.
Her last recorded voice lines is her goodbye to Charlie played by Burt Reynolds. Reynolds recorded his lines after her death. It took him 63 takes to get through it and you can tell he's barely keeping it together when doing the scene:

It's not BP, so you're yelling to no one. For the millionth time, but shorter, BP must adhere to what is legal to post on the internet in every country it is allowed. While you or I may be fine with certain words, they may not be legal to post on the internet in some countries. BPs censorbots are just trying to be universally acceptable. Having people complain about this, after they've said a thousand times they don't really have a lot of control over it, is equally annoying

I'm a vet, and I would say the most horrifying thing I have to tell people is that I can't do anything for their animal. It feels horrible every single time I have to discuss palliative care or talk about it perhaps being "time" for their animal.
I bet the vet we went to for my family's old kitty felt like this. She had advanced kidney disease. She lived for a week after the diagnosis. The vet sent us a handwritten note afterwards. You'll always be loved, Polkadots.
Our vets gave us a couple of feathers gently plucked from our birds, a card with a poem, a biodegradable cloth to bury them in, and a footprint stamped on the poem. It's very warming to get a package like that when a pet passes away.
Load More Replies...Lots of vets are depressed or suicidäl because they have to put down so many animals
(1/2) I can confirm that I know of 2 veterinarians I went to school with who ultimately ended their lives. It's the best/worst career. Don't get me wrong, I love what I do, but the human aspect sometimes makes it suck so hard. It's the worst telling someone that there is nothing more that can be done, or trying to gently guide someone to the realization that it's time to let that 100 year old chihuahua that is basically now skin wrapped around bones & being kept alive by feeding tubes & colostomy bag go. It's rough seeing animals that are abused & the human that is like *shocked Pikachu face* when you point it out because how could feeding my little snookums nothing but cake & ice cream every day be abuse? And clearly I am just fat shaming snookums instead of trying to warn you of the dangers of feline diabetes & obesity related feline cardiovascular disease, or having people yelling at you when they don't have any money to treat their pets for basic care

My cat is 17, I rescued him when he was a starving kitten. Just typing this is making me upset but I don’t think he’ll be here much longer. As soon as the vet gives me the nod I’ll let him be free. I don’t want him to be in pain. Love you, my Oscar cat x
My sis ig going through this right now. They just found a cancerous mass in their beloved cats head. She's going through with getting a biopsy, even though they can't afford the treatment. And he's like 15 years old. I feel awful, but it's time to let him go. One of the worst decisions I've ever had to make, and I don't want to have to tell her to do it, either.
"Do we give them life quality or just time?" - that's the question I always ask myself when one of our pets get seriously ill. If it's "just time", then it's time to let go.
Load More Replies...It's been exactly a month since I had to put my little guy down. He was basically paralyzed from the waist down and surgery didn't have a good chance of success. God bless the vets who really care.

There are orphanages full of kids who will never be adopted and many might not live long enough to "graduate" from the facility.
The reason is that these are kids rescued from, or abandoned by the child s*x trade. They have an eclectic selection of STDs. HIV is rife. And most have major emotional/psychological issues from the abuse they suffered.
Abortion should be legal and accessible everywhere. Otherwise, this is what happens
I don’t agree. Every life is savable. Sure, there’s s*x a***e and all kinds of violence, but all we need to do is therapy and patience. Never say the kids’ parents should’ve had abortion because every life has value, we just need to relearn patience.
Load More Replies...I work with these kids at my public school and in my personal volunteering. The worst part is how adults treat them after the abuse has ended. This includes not believing them, putting them back in the abusers custody,, And in multiple cases, being abused verbally, SA, or physically in the foster home or after the state has custody because there are so many in the system case workers are permanently overwhelmed. These are amazing kids that have been through so much it is like talking to an exhausted 40-year-old adult living in a 15-year-old’s body. For the majority of these kids (I am not talking about pathological liars) BELIEVE them when they tell you what happened to them instead of punishing them again.
er, it is. and there's more slavery too...
Load More Replies...Tis is not quite true. Yes, there are lots of orphans around the world who will never be adopted. No, they're not all, indeed only a tiny proportion of them are, "rescued from the child sex trade". Not sure why this poster has conflated the two things.
I don’t think they’re saying ALL kids who won’t get adopted are victims of the sex trade. I think they’re simply saying there are some kids out there who won’t get adopted and some who will even lose their lives because they’re victims of the sex trade.
Load More Replies...It's just too bad that it requires so much money and red-tape to adopt one.
Seriously. A psychological and financial assessment, followed by mandatory counseling for ongoing child safety, and parental emotional well-being as well. Doesn't have to be more than a doctors appt as far as inconvenience. Single people, people without a TON of money, lgbtq folks, people with disabilities, people who the local language is not their first and on and on and on get put to the bottom of a list, or altogether refused. Most kids would find a home. I would love to adopt, I have 2 children that I adore and care for well in all ways. Yet I don't make enough money to adopt? My wife could be forced to have a baby, even if we can afford it or she doesn't want it ect, but we can't adopt!? It's a*s-backwards.

This actually happened to my husband. Seemingly healthy, labs were good at his yearly Dr's appt. He just collapsed.
Happened to my ex husband, was googling heart attack and dropped dead of a massive one there and then. He'd had several tests previously and they hadn't detected any problems.
This happened to my mom. One day she wasn't feeling that well so she was set up to do testing the next day. That night she started having seizure like symptoms and passing out. Long night in the ER and found out her heart electrical system just stopped working with no actual cause. 6 years later, she has successfully survived a heart transplant after a pacemaker and biventricular pacemaker, but unfortunately no where closer to finding the cause
Carbon dioxide was blamed for the deaths of around 1700 people in Cameroon, west Africa, in 1986 when a massive release of gas occurred from Lake Nyos, a volcanic crater lake. The clinical findings in 845 survivors seen at or admitted to hospital were compatible with exposure to an asphyxiant gas.
They were just sleeping when the lake released a giant cloud of CO2 and wiped out almost an entire village.
This can even happen in wells. The air is so bad. A family went down a well one by one to repair it, then to try rescuing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd person in the chain, and they all died. Was in India.
In 2013 almost a whole family was wiped out in a similar case in Russia, but involving a basement that had rotten potatoes.
Load More Replies...It exploded out of the lake in a big burp. A ventilation pipe was installed so gas can't build up like that again.
All the animals, and even the flies were dead. A bloke was walking to the village, from another village to meet a friend. He was very lucky that he didn't arrive (iirc) by a slim margin earlier, like 10 minutes or he would have been killed too.
There is an episode of Scorpion that is based on these clouds of CO2 from lakes.
During the space shuttle Challenger disaster, the flight data shows that the astronauts turned on their internal oxygen supplies *after* the explosion...so it's likely that some of them were still alive when they hit the water.
Of course, they likely were alive. Watch the video. One of the two solid rocket boosters exploded. The shuttle didn't explode.
The solid rocket booster did not explode. It had a hot gas leak which melted the strut that attached it to the external fuel tank. The SRB then impacted the external fuel tank and that tank exploded which in turn ripped the shuttle orbiter apart but the crew compartment mostly stayed intact.

Remember the crocodile that took the toddler at Disney?
A guy that worked there told me the toddler wasn’t consumed. The crocodile stashed it under some submerged roots to let it soften up for a few days before consuming it. They found the body before that.
Likely not alligator. American crocodiles are found in that part of Florida alongside American alligators, and while the crocodile population is only a few percent of the alligator population they account for more attacks against humans in Florida. Alligators rarely attempt to take prey larger than their heads, and generally don't attack non-prey except in defense - but crocodiles will take larger prey, and will kill out of territorialism.
Load More Replies...Boy, I remember it. Years before I took my young children to WDW. One dropped purse from bridge into water. We began to retrieve it from the bank when out of nowhere a dozen or more employees showed up ushering us away from water. They got the purse for us. There are/were all kinds of indicators and warnings w/o so much saying alligators. That child being taken resonates with me.
Couple things: Wasn't a crocodile. It was a Gator. Also, the reason the family didn't sue, wasn't some altruistic reason. They literally couldn't. There were signs all along the pond the kid was playing in that cautioned people to not enter the water because of the potential danger of alligator attacks. Since the family ignored the signs and let their child play in the water, they were at fault for the attack and Disney couldn't be held responsible.
Why is everyone downvoting zuri??????????? They just didn’t know that the toddler got taken, and for the record, neither did I…
Basically, the family were staying at a Disney hotel on Disney World property. There was a small pond/lake behind the property. They took their child down there to play, and completely ignored half a dozen signs around the lake which cautioned not to enter the water, as it was dangerous due to the presence of alligators. (Gators are EVERYWHERE in Florida). The parents didn't see any harm in the kid playing in the shallow water, and were sitting in the grass, when they heard their child scream out and saw him being dragged into the deeper part of the lake. The toddler drowned, having been taken by a six or seven foot gator. The same gator which had prompted the warning signs that the water was dangerous. Some people claim that the family were too nice, as they never sued disney for the attack. However the truth is, they couldn't sue. Florida law makes it clear that because they ignored the warning signs and let him enter the water anyway, his death was their fault and not Disney's.

Supposedly global warming will cause spiders to slowly get bigger overtime.
This is an extremely compelling reason to end global warming. The spiders here in Australia are terrifying enough as it is.
I saw a picture of a huntsman spider and I cannot imagine living there. Are there any really awesome animals or is it pretty much just the Land of Nope?
Load More Replies...I don't know if global warming will do it, but in the far, far distant past, high oxygen did it for insects. O2 was 30% instead of the current 21%, and insects reached monstrous size: dragonflies with six-foot wingspans, etc.
We can't get to that size again because of how breathing works with spiders and insects. To put it VRRY simple, they breathe through something that works like a snorkel. Due to the amount of oxygen in the air the size is limited

On February 3rd, 1998, twenty people died when a cable car situated near the ski resort town of Cavalese, Italy plummeted to the ground from 260 feet. It was caused when a United States Marine Corps EA-6B Prowler aircraft, which was flying excessively fast and too low during a low-altitude training mission, ultimately severed the cable that supported the cable car as it was descending from Mount Cermis.
The disaster has been named the Strage del Cermis (Massacre of Cermis) in Italy. The pilot, Captain Richard J. Ashby, and his navigator, Captain Joseph Schweitzer, were ultimately deemed not guilty of involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide for their roles in the disaster. However, they were found guilty of obstruction of justice and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman upon being found to have **destroyed camcorder footage recorded from the plane's cockpit**.
This was a big scandal at the time. Yet another example of the US covering up for their forces/secret services overseas.
They were also tried by the US military, NOT the Italian authorities.

I saw a documentary about it long ago. IIRC, they did several maneuvers including flying upside down, and then got confused about what was up and what was down. (That sounds stupid, but the documentary said this is a thing that easily happens in a plane under certain circumstances.) Then they flew down when they thought they were flying up and hit the cable.

People that work with roaches, such as laboratory staff, reasearchers, and pest control personnel, often develop allergies to roaches....and preground packaged coffee.

I wanted to add the same thing. When foods are stored in insane amounts - in silos or in warehouses or what have you, it is impossible to eliminate all vermin to the degree of 100%. There is even an allowable amount that passes inspections. It's gross but have to put it out of your mind. Well, we could all try to grow our own everything, but not every region can do so. The American blood supply runs on about a 2-3 day buffer for most products. If for some reason the entire system shut down for a couple of weeks, people would die for lack of transfusions. And while at least 60% of our citizens are eligible to donate blood, only 5% of those people ever will. If that number went to around 8%, no blood bank would ever need to call you again.
You give the blood for free, and hospitals charge an average of $634 per unit (in addition to a charge of about $2000 for doing the transfusion procedure). I would gladly “donate” blood for at least $50 per unit. And I bet that would increase the supply!
For the record, I think you can sell plasma; it's not considered an 'organ.'

Same, but low iron and certain meds. I was so excited when I was finally over the minimum weight required (and over 16) so I could donate, then so disappointed when I was told I couldn't.

As I have a rare blood type, I try to donate regularly (and to avoid becoming ineligible when it's time to donate).
Top note, UK only I think...but because of the blood scandal in the UK, you cannot give blood if you've ever received blood. So basically the majority of people who now would quite happily give back what they took can't because the NHS won't test for any contaminated bloods l. I even offered to pay private for tests to ensure I was all good. They still rejected me on the grounds I had a transfusion. So every time I see them calling for more blood I can't help but feel their desperation is created by themselves..
As someone that recieved multiple blood transfusions as a baby born at 24 weeks 23 years ago, i hate this rule.

If having surgery, always go in ahead of it and give blood. Never let them give you another person's blood unless there is no choice. The number of things that are not being cataloged about the giver is staggering. My wifes last surgery I asked a question about the origin of the blood they might have to use and the doctor looked at me like I'd grown another head. He actually asked me what difference it made. Well, it could be the difference between life and death. The hospital could not answer my question because the blood bank is not asking enough questions of the donors. It's gotten to the point all they care about is what type it is, they couldn't care less what you might be a carrier of or what you might have injected. As Justin Tyme points out below, It's all about money for the hospital.

Every traditional disposable diaper ever made is still in a landfill and has not decomposed. One diaper takes 500 years to decompose. The best biodegradable ones take 50 years. That means, unless you were in cloth diapers, the ones you wore as a baby are still out there.

This isn’t particularly existential or deep but Whales don’t actually die of old age. They die from drowning when they’re too old to resurface.
So, they do die from old age. If they’re too old to function then that, to me, means they die of old age.
It's like the stuff with lobsters - "they don't die of old age, they die because their shell crushes them". Yes, because either they can't produce the energy to moult or because they lose the ability to moult, both of which are caused by old age. These whales, like those lobsters, are dying of old age.
The death of a great whale is a hugely important contribution to the ecosystems of the open ocean. Most of the ocean is very short on essential nutrients and minerals, and when a whale corpse sinks to the bottom a whole array of species make their homes on it for many years.

L'Angolo de Gigi, the iconic Italian restaurant run by chef Gigi Ferruzo, left an indelible mark on the culinary scene in the capital of Colombia in the 80's, not only for its exquisite flavors but also for the dark rumors that surrounded it. It was said that the gourmet dishes served there, located on the road to La Calera, were prepared with human flesh.
Little is known about Ferruzo because it's known that he was a butcher from a young age and emigrated from Italy to settle in Colombia. Over time, he began associating with influential politicians in the country, and his behavior changed so much that many compared him to a mobster. Rumors spread that these politicians were not only his friends but also the ones supplying the bodies he allegedly used in his cooking, because a supposed former member of the secret police claimed that the bodies from the wars against guerrillas and d**g trafficking were sold to Ferruzo and that, on the day of the Palace of Justice siege, he was allowed to select "the plumpest corpses". To this day, the whereabouts of these people are unknown and that is why one of the theories is that he cooked them and fed them to his diners.
The situation worsened when restaurant employees began to suspect something was wrong, as Ferruzo wouldn't allow anyone else to handle the meat because he claimed it was imported from Italy, sent by his sister, although she later denied this. Eventually, after these rumors circulated, L'Angolo de Gigi closed its doors, and Ferruzo disappeared over 40 years ago, leaving his fate shrouded in mystery. No one knows what happened to him.
That seems to be a very inneficient way to dispose of bodies. What would he do with the rest after he used whatever cut he was interested in?

During time working at Pearl Harbor National Memorial I came across two horrifying tidbits. When the USS Oklahoma rolled over it trapped sailors inside with no way of rescuing them. Cutting through the hull was impossible, a single gap would have caused the air pocket to collapse and flood the compartment. The workers still heard banging on hull during Christmas, nearly three weeks after the attack and plugged their ears with cotton to drown it out.
The second tidbit is that by the time the workers got the ship upright and drained, workers were only collecting bits and pieces of remains. When caskets of the unknown sailors were exhumed to begin DNA identification they discovered over 100 different strands of DNA from a single coffin.
I feel like people forget that these were battleships and so it's not that easy to "just cut through them". They did everything they could to rescue the men trapped, but the equipment available at the time just wasn't going to be able to do the job fast enough. Diving equipment wasn't like it is today.
3 weeks though. It might have been more humane to cut a small hole and let that air bubble collapse.

Prions. Aka a misfolded protein in the brain that causes other proteins to misfold. This literally causes "sponge brain" or large holes in the brain. It is always fatal, and there is no known cure or treatment to slow the progression.
Prion disease can be contagious or genetic. The contagious form cannot be k*lled by extreme heat, meaning that people with prion disease who have to have surgery, those instruments used during surgery cannot be sterilized.
The most prevalent contagious form of prion disease is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, aka Mad Cow Disease. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is another common form of prion disease, which affects mostly deer. While there are no human cases of CWD, it is theorized that the disease could be capable of infecting humans.
Prion disease can also be "sporadic" meaning the cause is not genetic or contagious, ultimately unknown. The most common form of prion disease, CJD, is mostly sporadic.
Prion disease can lay dormant in the body for years. But once it is "activated", the average prognosis is about 1 year.
TL;DR: Prions make holes in your brain that you will ultimately die from. It can be contagious, genetic, or idiopathic. Once the disease is active, you have, at most, a couple years to live. There is no cure or treatment to slow the disease at this time.
Yes and in mad cow disease in England where cattle was being fed remains of slaughtered cows including brains, . Why, because it was cheaper.

People in the UK can donate, yes. Other countries are probably still *much* more cautious of accepting blood from people who may have been exposed.

Load More Replies...That you can't get prions away from devices is nonsense. However, harsher conditions are required as these proteins are quite stable. Place instruments in 1 molar sodium hydroxide solution or autoclave at 134°C instead of 121°C (every autoclave I have worked with so far has been able to do this). It is best to do both to be really safe.
According to one article I've found, it takes 6 hours in potassium hydroxide at about 150°C and about 60spi (4 bar, 400 kPa) pressure to make safe prion-infected tissue. https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/how-deadly-prions-are-destroyed-flna1C9475896

On November 25, 1988, a Japanese high school girl named Junko Furuta was threatened and brought to the house of a teenager who, along with his friends, proceed to torture and r*pe the the girl countless times for 44 days straight. in the end, Furuta was severely malnourished and was left in an incredibly weakened mental and physical state. On January 4, 1988, she was k*lled after being beaten up and having her face burned by the group of boys. Less than 24 hours after her death, her body was wrapped in a blanked, placed in a travel bag, put inside a metal drum which was filled with wet cement, and dumped in a construction site in Tokyo.
One of the mothers of these ‘boys’ (monsters) later desecrated Junko’s grave, claiming Junko had ruined her son’s life. It takes a special kind of insanity to blame the victim, especially in circumstances as horrendous as this.
But it does go some way towards explaining why the boy was the way he was.

All because she refused to date one of the boys who was the leader of a gang.
What horrifies me most about this case is that several people knew what was happening and did nothing.
The parents of the boys also blame Junko for "ruining their sons' lives" and have vandalised her grave.
Those parents are beneath bed bugs! Talk about blaming the victim. If their sons did such horrible things to a helpless and innocent girl, they don't know how to raise children.

The reason why she was tortured is because she wouldn’t date one of the boys because she already had a boyfriend. Rest in peace Junko. She didn’t deserve it.

4 saturation divers were in a decompression chamber which was pressurized to 9 atmospheres, when one of the tenders outside released the docking collar of the diving bell before the diver inside had closed the hatch all the way, resulting in an explosive decompression of the chamber, k*lling all 4 of the divers and the tender who caused it. The diver who was near the hatch was sucked out of the chamber from a small gap along with all the air rushing out. Due to lack of better words, he was literally turned into pulp and his remains were sprayed all over the deck outside.

There are a lot of everyday things that can really mess you up. In my late 20's, i coughed hard several times one day. The next morning, I could barely move and I couldn't move my head at all. Turned out I had pulled the muscles along my upper spine, the ones that keep your head upright when accelerating in a car for example. I spent 6 weeks in a collar and had to wear a tens unit. At the time I lived alone. It took me about 10 minutes to move my arm enough to get the phone right above my head on the headboard.

On a long enough timeline, if we managed to cure all other sources of disease, this would rise to effectively 100%. Truth is, we get cancer all the time. Our bodies just catch and eliminate it the vast, vast majority of the time (ie. it doesn't even make it past stage 1). But the one time our body doesn't catch it, that's when the trouble happens.

>In early May of 1898, a ten-year-old boy named Joseph Bufonchio was playing at the corner of Third and Jackson in what was known as the Great Jackson Street Chuckhole—it was eight feet deep and sixteen feet wide. The local children loved to play in these large pools of muck. These children would build rafts and push themselves across these miniature lakes by using poles to push them along. In doing so, at 4:30pm Joseph’s pole got stuck at the bottom of the chuckhole, and he fell in and sank to the bottom. This event was such a huge spectacle that up to 2000 voyeurs watched at what was described as a comical event as men clumsily struggled to retrieve the boy’s body. One by one, they fell into the muddy mess as the crowd cheered and laughed. It wasn’t until Joseph’s father arrived and yelled out to the crowd: “It is my poor boy that has been drowned. Have you no regard for my grief?” Just then, silence fell over the great chuck hole. It wasn’t until 6:00pm that they recovered his body, and he was rushed to a local bathhouse, where Dr. Rogers who theorized was that a body could be revived even after it had been in the water for several hours. He worked on the boy’s body until 9:00pm with no success.
I can’t imagine laughing while a child’s body is being retrieved.

When you make a mistake while scuba diving, you have the rest of your life to fix it.
'The rest of your life' when underwater is dramatically shortened, so you need to fix the mistake before your untimely demise.
Which is exactly why I do not go scuba diving. I already make way too many mistakes on land. I'm not trying to find out my odds under all that water.
When you make a mistake while scuba diving, you have the rest of your life to fix it. Unless you do actually fix it. In that case it wouldn’t be “the rest of your life”. Although, I guess you could spend the rest of your life fixing it yourself mistake again if day you devoted the rest of your life inventing a new technology that would prevent a similar mistake from happening.
Recreational SCUBA diving is actually quite safe. You are not supposed to go into decompression mode so if your gear fails you do a "blow and go" where you exhale as you return to the surface. The greatest danger in diving is when you are in an overhead environment (wreck and cave diving). You usually have a buddy nearby and a second regulator (the piece that goes in your mouth). I learned to dive in the 1970's but as I had very little money all my gear was yard sale junk so I got used to dealing with gear failure on dives.

Once you begin to show signs of rabies, it's already too late to do anything about it. You have an inevitable and terrifying death ahead of you. Also, it's possible to get rabies from even a tiny, unnoticeable scratch, possibly while you're sleeping. If you've been camping in the last couple months, you could have it right now and not even know it.
Some poor kid in Canada in the news for dying from a bat bite when it flew into their bedroom.
During early Covid days there was a kid from an affluent family who got rabies and died because there was a shortage of the rabies immunoglobulin in our country and despite the family being able to afford even a private jet to fly to a neighbouring country to get the treatment, severe Covid restrictions (especially when entering into the neighbouring country) meant they were not able to do it within the effective treatment window. The kid developed symptoms soon after the exposure and died.

I turned and asked him "Do you know what the treatment for rabies is once symptoms start? You should look it up." He joked about how bad it must be. Meanwhile, one of the teens googled it. Shock-faced and showed the mom. Mom showed the husband. Cashier also googled it. "Holy, s**t. 100% fatal." There are a total of 29 recorded cases of humans surviving rabies, most recently through what has become known as the Milwaukee Protocol - literally inducing a near-death coma state and administering ketamine.
29 is a bit high. The CDC currently states less than 20 human survivors, and only a few of those survivors did not recieve the rabies vaccine prior to symptoms. While today I didn't look into how many of those survivors went on to fully, or near fully, recover, there was only the ONE (the girl who was first treated with the Milwaukee protocol) back around 2010 when I presented on this subject as vet neuro/neurosurg resident. She recovered almost 100% eventually, but I dont recall what her permanent neuro deficits were. The other survivors remained pretty severely neurologically compromised.

The chainsaw was originally a medical tool used during birth. They cut your pelvis in half to help get the baby out. It was invented in the 1800s and was hand powered.
This is not quite correct. The Gilgi saw was used - serrated wire connected to handles or loops at both ends, allowing the surgeon to pull it back and forth in a sawing motion. It was only used as a last ditch to get the baby out when the mother was not expected to live.
Thank you for that context. I was starting to believe it was somehow horrifying and being used on women who were alive like an everyday c section. Partially because that's what people were implying. so your comment definitely put it into perspective and hearing it's basically a very old style medical tool that is used only when the patient is not expected to live.
Load More Replies...There is so much misinformation and misunderstanding around this factoid. Before this invention, the only options were to allow the mother and baby to die, to cut the mother open without anaesthesia in the hope that the baby's life might be saved (sacrificing the mother) or to literally dismember the baby within the mother to save her life. A symphesiotomy (cutting of the pubic bone in the front) gave a good chance that both lives could be saved. It was used until remarkably recently, especially in places like sub-Saharan Africa where access to modern medical equipment was poor. The death rate for the women who underwent this procedure in recent times was found to be negligible, although the after-effects of it are life-changing and severe.
Yep, gotta get this baby out of the baby incubator! It might be male!

If you ever eat maggots and don’t chew them properly, a thing called myiasis happens where they eat your intestines.
Myasis is not specifically related to ingested larvae, mostly it's blood-born and does not take place in the digestive system. In the very rare cases where it does, one could imagine a fast transit through the stomach might allow larvae to survive, but much more likely eggs can be protected from the acid by the food they're inside of.

These fibrous tissue rings can lead to significant morbidity and auto-amputation of the affected digit." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK546612/
This statement is not true. There is no medical condition where pinky toes spontaneously auto-amputate. Some key points: Toes, including pinky toes, do not have any mechanism to "auto amputate" themselves. Amputation is a medical procedure that requires surgical intervention. There are some medical conditions that can lead to tissue death in extremities (like severe frostbite or certain vascular diseases), but these: Are not specific to pinky toes Do not cause instant or automatic amputation Require medical attention and often surgical intervention Can often be treated if caught early The claim that "once it starts, you can't stop it" is also false. Many conditions that could potentially lead to toe amputation can be treated if addressed promptly. This kind of misinformation could cause unnecessary fear or anxiety. If someone has concerns about their toes or any other part of their body, they should consult with a medical professional rather than relying on unverified claims.

Not true. You are literally not the same person you were born as as your cells renew and die all the time, even in the period between breaths.
I recently shared a tent with someone with sleep apnoea. He literally totally stopped breathing the whole time he slept. The only thing keeping him alive was that every minute or two the carbon dioxide sensor in his lungs would go off making him take 4 or so big gasping breaths, sometimes accompanied with a scream, before stopping breathing again. If the carbon dioxide alarm in his lungs failed to go off at any time when he's asleep then he'd be dead in about 3 minutes.
