Depends on where and how long ago I would imagine. Considering they're talking about someone who is now a professor it wouldn't surprise me if this happened 30+ years ago. In fact, the post itself is 12 years old, the author of the post is remembering something that happened when they were younger, which is the professor remembering what happened when *they* were younger. It's at least 30 years ago, probably more like 50+. As for the crime part. Doesn't need to be a crime to ruin a life. Though to be fair sounds like the prof's life was still messed up anyway.

True. Her father may have insisted she end the baby's life, or the scared teenage father may have insisted. Too many women are forced to get abortions by the men who have power over them. That's one reason they need to know there are options.

Abortion or adoption? Either of those choices would give the mother a full life. IMHO the childs life would have been much better also. ( no, abortion only removes the tissue that is in the womb, it is NOT a baby until it can live on its own outside the host. ( we will not debate this)

I wouldn't say she tricked him or is trying to get him to pay back child support seen as the OP never mentioned that she even brought anything up about money. What I do agree with is why didn't she try to find out from the start who was her child's father if she wasn't sure ,and it seems like Op still had connections in the area so she could of got in contact with him. Who I feel sorry for is the son he spent years not knowing which of the possible guys was actually his father.

You care more about her TRICKING him into a paternity test than the boy knowing his father? It's possible that she was in love with the other guy, and was hoping he'd marry her and become the boys father. We don't know that this didn't happen. Maybe that guy is gone now and the girl is almost back at square one where she was when she originally got pregnant. Don't judge if you don't know the whole story.

She's already poured 255k into raising his kid without his help. As the father, he is legally responsibility to pay at least half that amount. That you insinuate that the mother is not entitled to repayment and is somehow devious in this case says a lot about you than it does her.

That it was fine his mother had to scrimp along on a minimum wage job and support him solo? That she should suck up that cost alone and his son never have had any financial support from his father? He absolute owes *both of them* - he helped create the child, and half of any and all associated costs by rights are his to bear. And that debt is not erased just because his son is now an adult. He needs to step up and make it right.

I would sincerly rethink living with someone if their response, to this tragic situation and my attemps to help, with "i dont want it to disrupt my peaceful life".
