We all live in a world governed by rules, common sense and socially acceptable norms. The latter ones refer to things that are generally viewed by the members of our society as being appropriate to engage in.

Although societal norms often vary from culture to culture, that doesn’t mean some of the generally accepted things are not to be questioned. With times changing, some of them feel outdated or raise more questions than they have answers.

This illuminating thread asked people to weigh in and list the things that are “socially acceptable but you can’t help but think ‘why?’” Below are some of the most illuminating responses, so scroll down!

So... okay... we tend to agree **generally** (as far as the internet enabled population of the world goes) that sexualizing children and pre-pubescents is wrong/creepy/uncomfortable. Sexualizing young teens (as in 13-15 year olds) is uncomfortable... 18 and up is "okay" but, depending on who is doing to looking - can still be creepy. So America has these creepy-weird child beauty pageants... Asian games/media, it seems to be the NORM to have the 'object of desire main character' *always* be 15 - 18 years old (but claimed to be over 18 when ported to North America because of legalities) no matter how old the possible romantic interest is... and if she's over 22 years old... "OH WOW SHE'S SO OLD". What is WRONG with people?

I'm honestly amazed that these pageants are still a thing. Those little girls are being hyper sexualised and it's utterly repugnant. The parents (although it's mostly the mothers forcing their daughters to do this so they can live vicariously through them) should be jailed for child abuse. I'm sure these pageants are a paedophile's dream. It's sickening.

“Being within a community, we are relatively conformist,” Dr Audrey Tang, a chartered psychologist and author of multiple books, including "Be A Great Manager Now," "The Leader's Guide to Mindfulness," and "The Leader's Guide to Resilience” told Bored Panda in an interview.

According to Dr Tang, this is nothing new and much of this collective approach can be traced back to the dawn of civilization. She calls it “a hangover from our past as a collective.” Dr Tang explained: “It was safer for the community to sleep at the same time because it meant that no one was sneaking into your cave to steal your stuff.”

This “Christian” nationalist movement in the US scares me. I heard one person in an interview say that those of us who are not “Christians” should be treated as second class citizens. Obviously never read the entire book of Matthew, or if they have, they’ve chosen to ignore that one because it definitely challenges their movement.

I often think none of them have read their bibles, at least not cover-to-cover, as a book is meant to be read. It's like pulling random sentences and paragraphs from any book would be - without reading the entire book, how could you possibly understand the context.

It isn't okay at all. I had an abusive ex-boyfriend, which left me feeling battered and like I needed to fight. When I finally fell in love with my husband, I would occasionally hit him. I felt awful and didn't understand why, at first. Then I realized that my first major relationship included more physical abuse than I even want to think about. It was bad. But, at some point, we have to realize that we have a choice to make a change, and we have to stop it. We have to set a new precedent. If we don't, the cycle will keep going. I still hate seeing that person's face, but I refuse to let it dictate who I can be now. I never want anyone to look at me how I look at him.

We may never really know it happens more to women, truthfully, because our culture pushes men to both hide and deny it. Male victims are taught they look weak, and invite ridicule, when they speak of it. There is a disturbingly significant number of abusive females out there, but we are led to believe if this happens it is the man's fault somehow.

No, you don't have to allow abuse to go on and on. The more that men speak up about it, the less stigmatized it will be. It takes a lot of courage to speak out against an abuser, ask any woman.

I think the reason it is still "acceptable" is because men are exceptionally stronger than women. As someone else mentioned, men are, or should be, taught not to hit women due to the difference in strength. Which is OK, but the emotional abuse is the same. Western society still has an issue accepting mental an emotional abuse. People tend to think, no blood no foul. It's the same with children. There are plenty of times when child abuse continues because of the lack of physical trauma.

Honestly, I'm very concerned by how normalized being on the phone while driving is. I see it so often, and as a pedestrian, it's honestly terrifying. Yes, texting is worse, but being on the phone in any capacity while driving is not dangerous only because your hand/eyes are occupied- it's dangerous because you're DISTRACTED while operating heavy machinery.

Years ago, I saw an interesting news video where they took people who insisted they could totally text and drive safely and put them in a driving simulator. It showed them that they could text and drive without crashing while it was just a matter of keeping the car moving forward, but when something came up that needed their immediate reaction, like a car stopping short in front of them, or pulling in front of them unexpectedly, a surprise bike or pedestrian, they crashed. Our brains don't multitask. They task switch. Their attention was not on the road while texting. Because driving is usually mundane, and other people are paying attention most of the time, we can be lulled into a false sense of security. Most of the time, our attention can lapse and nothing happens, but we've all had those moments where we had to slam on the brakes, or swerve to miss something. They can happen at any time. I wish they'd show that to every driver, especially those just starting out.

Moreover, we have a fundamental drive to be part of a group. “We have always been safer together, and inclusion – even if you are near the bottom of the pack – still means you are part of something bigger.”

Dr Tang argues that "social norms" are the cultures, behaviors and expectations which make up society. “They can differ from community to community, but in many ways, adherence allows us to know where we fit within our group.”

She continued: “When we live in a society with others (and this is evident in the animal kingdom), we tend to understand our ‘place’ in the pack through acknowledging ourselves in comparison to others – with the goal being access to resources. In humans, we are fighting less over a perceived scarcity of food and water, but (especially in the social media world) a need for acknowledgment and validation.”

I know right? It's not like anyone is expecting else! It's always a bit of an anticlimax when it doesn't turn out to be a puppy quite frankly! Most people truly aren't that bothered and if you are bothered, that always seems a little bit sad really. Just be glad it's a healthy baby.

Gender reveals are dumb. All that should matter is a healthy new family member that should be welcomed equally regardless of gender.

I recently had our gender scan. Was asked if we were doing a reveal. All I could think about was the mess and clearing up after that balloon is popped! We got a blue heartbeat bear at the clinic, facetimed family and stuck a photo on fb. No clear up, everyone still excited (bar one grumpy sibling but that's another story), baby gets a cute teddy!

Same. But it was also 20 years ago and gender reveals were becoming more in demand but the technology wasn't there yet to safely have more than one ultrasound, unless the health of the baby was in question. That's how it was explained to me. I was told this info was wrong by others. It could have also been a public health requirement, too. Dk. But it's not like it really affected what we bought beforehand. We just went with neutral themes. Not like the baby will care, either way.

And never reveal where you live, or show the outside of your home. All it takes is for someone to recognize a tree, a park, a street, a house and they can tell everyone where that is. I see youtubers do this then wonder why they have stalkers.

Dr Tang also claims that building self-esteem has focused on appreciating the self but often in comparison to others “(e.g. I didn’t win… but at least I didn’t come last).” She added that “While in many ways this was more important historically where there was more of a 'fight' for resources, the 'competition' has now moved to social media and 'likes' - and as such this may now also play a huge part in what is acceptable.”

People Are Sharing Things That Shouldn't Be Socially Acceptable In 2022, And Some Are Controversial Working while sick. This expectation needs to stop. Being expected to work while sick doesn't make a good employee, it makes a bad employer. That's saying nothing of how this expectation leads to the rest of the employees getting sick too. There was a reason everyone at my previous job called the place the petri dish, if one person got sick literally everyone else would too because you either worked or went to the unemployment line.

Was told it carries over if you dont use it, so i went without holiday so i could have longer one next year, only to find you cant use more than 40 hours in given year.

Working sick is just idiotic. What's even MORE idiotic? When you work for a DISABILITY MANAGEMENT COMPANY (you know... the company that is supposed to *specialize* in ensuring that you do *not* work when you're sick because of the inherent flaw in that whole concept) and they strooongly IMPLY that you are 'subpar' if you don't work while sick. Then when your work has mistakes because you know... you were DELIRIOUS... oh well, then all the more reason to put that on your review! wtf?

This gets me too, it's just so counterproductive. Sick employees don't work effectively and then take longer to get better. Then as OP said, others get and the cycle repeats. Feeling pressured to work while sick also impacts morale, also affecting staff efficiency. In the short term you might have an extra pair of hands for a shift but in the long term it's such a terrible way to run a business.

This lead to a permanent disability (that, of course, couldn't be "proved" in court for disability compensation) for me. I'm disabled for the REST OF MY LIFE because I worked in some minimum wage job (*cough* Great Wolf Lodge *cough*) where my coworkers were literally throwing up behind the counter, but couldn't go home until they found someone to cover their shift. Disabled for the rest of my life with no compensation whatsoever - I was even written up for not calling in sick "correctly" - because my managers were the worst people I've ever had the... "privilege" of meeting.

Middle-ager u-turned immediately, grabbed the phone, opened the window and threw it out, 2 to 3 km pre station, in the snow. This was when smoking was still allowed on the train, like 2005, 2006 or so... Laughed the entire remaining part of the ride!

Dr Tang argues that we often feel fear of judgment because of a tendency to live our life according to a series of ‘shoulds.’Although if you ask anyone, they are likely not to be able to tell you where their rules came from.

“For example, who said that ‘women should be caring and nurturing?’; who said that ‘men shouldn’t cry?’ Who said that we should/shouldn’t be a certain weight/size/shape, etc.” Dr Tang added: “and more importantly, is anyone still saying it?!”

Same! I actually made 3 sort-of-friends-that-I-don’t-know-well who invited me to lunch very uncomfortable the other day - they seriously wouldn’t stop insisting on me drinking even though I politely declined at least 6 times and even told them I’m on opioids and can’t mix those with alcohol or I MIGHT DIE. Eventually one snuck away to the bar and brought back a shot for all of us. I had a moment of exasperation and looked them all dead in the eyes and said “Okay, fine, I’m a recovering alcoholic, that’s why I’ve been saying no. Please don’t force alcohol on me.” It was pretty quiet afterwards. 🙄 if you’re gonna make it awkward, I’ll make it awkward too. If someone says no to alcohol, just drop it. I’m still newly sober and almost said yes and ruined my sober streak :( sorry for the super long comment!

When I am bugged I just say no is a complete sentence. The worst experience was with family, I was at my aunts house for new years and my cousin handed me a glass of champagne 5 min to midnight. I was like you know I don't drink and haven't for over 10 years. His response was yeah but it is champagne on new years that doesn't count. When I said it very much does and put my glass in the kitchen he got mad that I was ruining new years by *preaching* aka just saying none for me thanks. The thing that made me really pissed is I asked him if he would have given my partner a glass if they had stayed up and he said of course. I'm sober cause my partner is a recovering alcoholic which my cousin knows and he still was gonna push alcohol. I don't go over there anymore

My family used to do this to me, not because I'm child free, but because I'm the only single parent. They'd get together and plan couples dates, so they could have a break from their kids. But, they wouldn't ask or even warn me, before dropping all their kids, en masse, at my house. Not one of them ever babysat when I asked, or thought I might need a break, too. So, as soon as my kids were old enough to stay home alone for a few hours I switched my job hours to nights and weekends. Prime date time. Haha.

When I pointed out I would have to take an unpaid week off work, the reply as 'and?'. I didn't get to say no until I was 25 yo and I lived the other side of the country.

Unpaid internships are meant to teach the student but many companies take advantage and make them do work for free. It's actually illegal to have your intern do any work that contributes to the income or business services, that's why they get coffee in many movies and pop culture. People need to know their rights as an intern and report companies that take advantage and have their intern making the company money.

When I was a student, I was working 8 hour days in a refinery. Heavy manual labour, for free! I remember talking to another guy about being a little tight on cash and he said why don't you get a job? Like i was just lazy and didnt feel like putting in another 6-8 hours work after the 8 hours i just did. People think dealing with boomers is difficult now, you should have tried working with them in the 90's!

Unpaid internships are de facto discrimination. Its a way for financially comfortable people to ensure the company only hires and meets people who are already in their socioeconomic circle You can only afford to take an unpaid internship if there is someone in your life paying your bills. Little Johnny needs to be paid for that work he's doing for free at the engineering firm because mom and dad don't have $300 to spare for the suit he's required to wear. Even if Johnny is just getting donuts, that's a paid job if he isn't there and its allowing someone else to help meet the company's bottom line instead of standing in line for donuts. Most of the time, Johnny is doing $30/hr drafting work for free as "part of the price you pay to learn".

It's also why news media is sh*t now. To get into journalism, you need an unpaid internship. To afford an unpaid internship, you need generational wealth. So now nearly everyone in journalism comes from a wealthy background and doesn't 'get' things like being poor and marginalised.

Nonetheless, it is often easier to simply conform. “And there results an unconscious lesson – shout long enough and loud enough and people may go along with you to shut you up.”Moreover, a lot of our beliefs are imposed unconsciously through the stories we watch in the media, in our culture, in our families and in our overall experience, Dr Tang argues.

This post was about inappropriate logos on kid's shirts. If your daughter wants to wear a crop top at 10, let her. Her body, her choice. This applies extra if you live in a hot area. Not letting your daughter wear a tank top while letting your son run around shirtless is sexist, and teaches your daughter that their bodies are bad and need to be hidden, instead of promoting self-love. You should just let your kids wear what THEY want to wear. If you ban these clothes, they'll still wear them behind your back, anyway. Or they'll go crazy when they become adults and buy REALLLY small clothes. Banning those clothes simply doesn't work.

Congratulations and I hope everyone is happy & healthy! Although parenting is a very hard job and you're never really off the clock so to speak, the love that you'll feel towards your baby is... There's just no words for it. It's like you never knew love before that moment. It doesn't mean you're going to have this super blessed existence or that you won't feel things like anxiety or post partum issues (hopefully not) and it is different for everyone. But, there are these moments of absolute clarity where it all makes sense. It's one of the most beautiful and powerful things a person could ever experience. Enjoy. It goes by so fast.

It is for you & only you to decide when, how, where, and everything else.I was active when I was younger and I think I just wanted to fit in and to have physical affection and I did that bc in my young brain that's how you got it. Now, I really hate it I don't like the sensations, it really really bothers me. I do it bc I care about my partner's needs, & I want to make him happy but I don't like it. I felt guilty about it for a long time but I can't change who I am. It's okay to have your boundaries and limits firm, that's really healthy. As long as you're communicating that to a potential partner, you're good. Honesty is a building block. Red flag? Don't put it aside, listen to your intuition, it's there for a reason. I don't know, just the rantings of a middle aged, mostly asexual woman. I wish I'd known these things so I say them now instead. You're the most important person in your life. If it did come up which is rare I think I'd kinda want to say something like "hey were you guys wanting kids?" Like the whole "when are you going to have kids?" I don’t really have an issue with speakerphone, unless people are being really loud - after all, it’s just two people having a conversation in public, which is completely normal. Loud voices can be annoying but a lot of people are hard of hearing or struggle with background noise, so sometimes it’s necessary to raise your voice.

I talk with my grandma when I go for walk because only then I've enough time for a longer talk. I don't put her on speak and almlst always wear headphones but often I need to talk louder for her to be able to hear me. I don't do it in public transport, only on the street. Yet once in a while someone's rude only because I talk to my phone instead of a live person by my side - I don't make more noise than two people, let alone group, walking and talking. The only difference is that I'm on the phone.

Context matters with this because of the location. This happened at the SS building, not a movie theatre or a restaurant. The SS Office in general can be an extremely loud place at times. Not just the people who are going there, but, also the people working at the office have to be loud when speaking. Those who are at the local SS Office are either retired (which is elderly people who more than likely have hearing loss due to natural causes) or it is children/adults with either physical & mental disabilities or both such as Down Syndrome, ASD, Intellectual Disorder, Blind, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf, etc. This is one location that I would hope people would be understanding of someone that may be using their phone on speaker and talking loudly. This woman could’ve been the elderly wife to a man that is in such poor health he was not able to go to his local SS Office to apply for SS or SSDI so his wife who also has hearing problems is the one trying to get him the assistance that he needs.

A LOT of y'all need to remember that respecting your elders gives you a longer life. While I understand that it is Excessively annoying having to be privy to a private conversation. In some cases (for our ELDERS), we could grant them the patience and understanding that as you age, sometimes your hearing Isn't good, But your ears Are Sensitive, so sometimes headphones Aren't an option.... Or, you could consider how Karma and the Universe will look poorly upon your choice to treat people who deserve such a Small consideration poorly....

Here, the drink driving limit is so low you basically can’t have any alcohol and legally drive and it really has made a difference. People used to tell themselves they were probably ok after a couple of drinks - now they know they can’t drink at all and it has made a difference.

At least in my country this is not socially acceptable anymore - which I think is a very good thing. Although that doesn't mean that there aren't still idiots out there who do this, but it's now far away from a social thing that everyone was doing and no one batted an eye on.

Not here, not now. It's been socially unacceptable to be 'drunk driving' for decades, then it was 'drink driving' and now the limit has been lowered SO much that there is no measure of alcohol available that won't put you over it. Even the smallest measure of wine, spirits or beer means you're breaking the law..

I think, the way they phrased it, they are talking about having ANY amount of alcohol before driving. I concur, I'd never drink anything before getting in the driver's seat, because it's not necessary to have fun anyway, but also because even a little bit might make the difference between killing someone and not killing someone...

These are the other videos that I could also show my son when he was learning how to drive. The gorier the better! He needed to see exactly what would happen. I also told him about the person I know who was drunk driving and totaled their car and themself, fortunately no one else was injured. That person was me and it was a tough thing to tell him but he needs to know make it happen to anyone who isn't acting responsibly.

When the security guard unlocked the door to let everyone in, they barged through the doors and he died due to the stampede. People were literally running and stomping on his dead body. That's utter insanity. Such an extreme and scary case of "pack" behaviour.

At least we're not working as much as our ancestors had to. The stories of people working like 80+ hours a week to barely make ends meet in the 1800s/1900s is sad. Obviously not easy now but at least it's not as bad as that for the general public (at least here in most states). But yeah it shouldn't be normalized.

Many would be glad to only have to do 80,000. That's 40 years of work, equal to working from 22 to 62. Add another 20,000 to 40,000 hours to that for low-paid workers; and still they have nothing.

When we are at odds with others, it is common to feel guilt. “Related to this is our self-esteem – which (unlike self compassion) is developed in comparison to others – if we see we are doing better, we feel better about ourselves.”

Dr Tang explained that “when we hear differing opinions, yes, the opinion itself may make us angry, but it causes us to question our own foundations, and unconsciously, our position in our own world… if someone else is different… could they end up being more 'powerful' (or at least get more access to the resources I want)?”

I don't think the comment of your child is going to break hearts when they get older is being sexualized. I think the biggest problem is that adults sexualize everything that children do and that's where the problems arise. We all need to stop looking through the sex glasses and just learn that whatever is said it's probably just innocence

1/2 I don't think saying a kid will be a heartbreaker when they're older is sexualising them; I think the following is much worse. I saw a clip from an American television show that had LGBT characters in it, I can’t remember the name of the show. Anyway, there were two lesbians sitting and having a chat about whatever at a friend’s house. A child appeared in the scene who was around 10 years old and had a brief chat before he walked off. As he walked away, one of the adults said to the other adult “He’s going to be *such* a bottom.” How on earth is that acceptable??

Up there should be sharing nude pictures of your kids who are way past the newborn stage to all friends and family bc, "It's soooo cute!". Kids deserve privacy, and some parents need to learn that. YOU think it's cute, I think it's criminal and I'm not going to go to jail for your stupidity either. I understand Grandma and Grandpa, perhaps siblings of parents who have kids, but with the knowledge we now possess regarding child abuse and child pornography, hard no to nudes of your kids, idgaf NO means NO. And it really rude if know your dog don't act well around other dogs or people. Like your asking for trouble. Even a small dog can bite someone.

It's not only about attacking. We were sitting down at a lake and a huge dog came rushing towards us - clearly just wanting to play. But rushed onto the picknick blanket (no food, just chilling) and suddenly you're eye to eye with a dog that's just pure energy. I froze and I'm really glad, that the friend I was with just got the collar, pulled the dog down and then told it to get off of us. - and that it worked.

Depends on the place. We have several places where dogs are perfectly allowed to be off-leash (obviously they need to be well-behaved). If people want them to be on a leash (because of your mentioned reasons), they need to speak up. And yes, it works fine. VERY rarely does anything happen or any dog get too close to people who don't want them to and those with unfriendly dogs avoid going there anyway.

Let me put this into another perspective. I lived in the UK for 8 years, and it had such beautiful parks! Yet not once did I manage to enjoy one, because they were all treated like dog heavens. BTW I love dogs. But I also realise that they can be dangerous. Every park was chock full of off the leash dogs with owners chatting somewhere around. Dogs running up to me all the time. When I froze, the reaction was always "oh, they're very friendly, don't worry!" . Except I cannot know that. Even if YOU fully belive that you might be wrong. Or your idea of friendly can be very different from mine. I used to take two toddlers with me (nanny for a while) and it was my responsibility to take them home with their face still where it was before. When a staffie shoved their face into the stroller to sniff the 3 year old, I was terrified. I know how lovely they can be. Also how their jaw can snap an adult's thigh bone in half without effort.

Haha - that reminds me of a story. A friend of mine has four very well-trained labradors. She was walking with them on the beach, no person around at all, leashes were off (allowed to!) and then there was the backpack that someone must have placed there for later and LEFT THE BREAKFAST on the top of the backpack. That was of course the day the whistle didn't work and the dogs had quickly swallowed the sandwich and probably something else. Since there was nobody around, and apart from the eaten food nothing was damaged, she collected the dogs and quickly walked off. Who the hell leaves their food out in the open on a backpack? If not dogs, there's also seagulls who might gobble it up!

Yes. My dad was once stopped at a red light with an elderly man with a walker crossing in front of him. It was a multi-lane road and dad was in an inner lane. The light changed while the gentleman was still in front of dad's truck and everybody on both sides starts moving, so this poor man is stuck in the middle of the road! Dad just shifted into park and stayed where he was, of course, but the guy behind us leaned on his horn like he expected us to run over the fellow!

What’s unfortunate, according to Dr Tang, is the common behavior, rather than to show acceptance of difference, to try to negate that of the other. “It is the act of ‘normative idealization’ – what I do is normal, what you do is odd (it makes our own ego feel better); or we might alternatively just be picking on others to avoid thinking about our own problems – and something which makes them 'different' is an easy target.”

Sometimes it means by bringing someone down (rather than working to raise ourselves up), we feel better about ourselves, Dr Tang explained, and don’t need to admit we need to do something about our own insecurities.

Telling a young person that they’ll change their mind eventually when they say they have no interest in ever getting married. Also telling someone they’ll want kids eventually even if they’re adamant about never having kids. Case in point, I would very much prefer to have two cats that I can love and pamper and cuddle with than a husband or wife. I refuse to give birth, I refuse to be pregnant, if it ever happens, I am getting an abortion. If I ever have kids, it’ll be through foster or adoption and it’ll only happen if I become moderately wealthy and can give those kids a good life, if not? My cats will be close enough to kids anyway.

I've never wanted children and I have no idea why people struggle to comprehend that. For my whole adult life people have said I'll want them once my biological clock starts ticking, or it's different when it's yours, or you'll change your mind eventually. Really? Because I'm 40 and I still don't want them. I can't have them anyway, I went through early menopause in my late 20s. Being infertile feels like all my birthdays and Christmases at once.

In this 'time' when apparently all the uber-wise non-boomers (in which I am included in that exceptionally large group) are eagerly sharing that no one gets to tell you how you "should" feel or do things (which is true)... they STILL think it's okay to blatantly flat out tell you "you're wrong. You will change your mind in a few years". And they were telling me this waaaay after puberty was done. Like... noo... I'm not 12 years old and saying things I REALLY don't know about... I'm (at the time) in my mid-twenties... late twenties... early thirties... "Nope. You don't know that. You are going to change your mind" - Oh AM I now? REALLY? (no... no I haven't... because my reasons still stand, even if they don't want to hear it)

This is especially true for medical situations. I shared a hospital room once with a 35-year-old woman who, after 10 years with 2 stillbirths and several underlying issues, finally had had a doctor "allow" her to get a hysterectomy. She had fought for it for years, and had heard that "you might change your mind" bs hundreds of times from different doctors. She would probably have died if she had gotten pregnant, anyway, and her husband (who, for some reason, still had to sign off on her decision) was all for the procedure, but still, she was made to wait... And that's in Germany, I don't even want to imagine what it's like in the US right now...

True, but.... My Sister in law was.... feisty. She made her whole persona "I don't want kids and I'm never going to have kids!" Fine, great. Until she hit 35 and REALLY wanted them but couldn't admit it to herself because she'd made such a big deal about it. Huge depression followed, and now has serious regrets. My ex-wife started the same thing. And maybe things would have been similar if I hadn't advised her to tone down her opinions. She burst into tears the day she realised she wanted kids. I was so glad she hadn't entrenched that early attitude into something she felt she couldn't walk back when things changed. And our daughter is quite pleased about it too. All you can truly say is: "I dont want kids right now" and that's fine, and you don't need to explain that to anyone.

I think there is a lot of truth here. People can and do change their minds. Nothing wrong with that. The problem is people feel they have the right to say 'you'll change your mind' to those who are saying 'no thanks to children'. No-one should make that assumption, especially as it is likely (as you say) to entrench their view on the subject. Leave people alone and let them make up their own mind in time. A lot of people do stick to their childfree decision after all. I went 'the other way' - always wanted children when young and then the desire just trickled away. Didn't want them from late 20s onwards. Then found out I couldn't have them anyway so that turned out for the best. Yet I am STILL asked a) do you have children and b) why not.

I was thinking so when I was 16 (I wasn't dating them on that age), I still think so being almost 30 and probably won't change my mind anytime soon. I've no "daddy issues", I like company of men my age, it's just a matter of preferences that I find men older than me more appealing.

Scenario - bloke 24 meets young girl. Never met before, doesn’t know anything about her. They hit it off and he asks her age as he’d really like to see her again. Young girl lies about her age, tells him she’s 18 but in reality she’s only 15. Relationship evolves way beyond platonic and she comes clean to parents. Suddenly bloke is facing prosecution and a lifetime of being on a sex offenders register. Fair?

My husband is 30 years older than me. We met when I was 38 and he was 68. You would not believe how many times I've been called a "victim" because of the age gap. Under 30, age gap is weird. If one partner's age starts with a 1, too young.

It depends. My parents were 30 years apart as well. My mother was 26 when she met him, 27 when's she got me. Never felt weird to me. They were married until my father passed away in his 80s. Some of the comments i received (your father is your grandpa's kind of stuff) were disposable but never really bothered me. I always felt age is nothing but a number. In the end, they're (and you as well with your husband) both consenting adults. It's not up to society to judge on it. People need to get off their high horses and let other people live their lives. Nothing illegal is going on.

That's just discrimination enforcing. whatever 2 consenting free adults decide to do with their relationship should not be anyone else business. Some people find some relations disgusting, we all know that. that happened with mixed race relationships, with same gender relationships, with relations that involve transgender people and, of course, the age gap is again a form of discrimination towards people that prefer older or yonger people. Again, 2 consenting adults that love each other? good for them! I would advise, whenever you find yourself judging anyone else free consenting adult reltionships, take a loot at yourself, there may be some things to work on your side in order to accept that are all kinds of perfectly valid love that may not fit the norm.

I agree. People nowadays seem to have forgotten what "social media" actually means and immediately assume any social media is bad. Google defines it as "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking." This means Youtube, BoredPanda, and pretty much ANYTHING you use to chat with others is social media. Not all of it is bad.

The more kids are stopped from having social media, the more they get it. I know someone who lives in terror of her parents checking her phone and realising she has online friends because she's not allowed. Promoting online safety and realistic beauty standards is a much better way of addressing the problem of kids on social media imo

I kinda disagree with you in this one—kids should be allowed to have social media accounts, unless: - They hamper their studies - Affect their mental wellbeing - They use it for the wrong reasons (cyberbullying) - Excessive use which leads to health problems And of course, their usage should be monitored, but they should be allowed to have one. It's fun!

LITERALLY every single study done on this provoes you absolutely incorrect... Basically every single study done has shown that having social media accounts will have a detrimental effect. By the time YOU feel they are being influenced detrimentally , it's too late. It's NOT necessary. And it's horrible for their mental health. Period

I agree with "using social media only when you're close to high school" but requiring their passwords is a serious breach of trust. They're not small children. At this age they've every right to have their secrets and not to share everything with their parents. There are SOME exceptions, maybe if you suspect that they may be in real dangers, but requiring your childrens passwords is abusive and uncalled for. Good way to teach them how to lie and hide things.

ESAs are not legally classified as service animals and don't have the same rights of access as say a medical alert animal or a guide dog. People abusing the places allowing ESAs to let their poorly trained pet come with them is just going to make those with genuine ESAs struggle to find places to go with them even harder

My louse of a niece made up a diagnosis for herself, then started a GoFundMe to get the vet (not the therapist, mind you) to certify her cat as an emotional support animal. She then took the poor creature, very sedated at the time, on her move from Hawaii to Ohio. (This was also covered by GoFundMe, naturally.) After returning to Ohio, she resumed locking herself in her room, leaving herself with no access to the "service“ cat. The cat seems unperturbed by this state of affairs.

Some old man patted my head and my mom slapped his hand shouting "DON'T TOUCH HER!" Her reaction made me more upset and embarrassed than the old man and my mom asked if I was upset at her reaction or if it was the old man. I told her both because it was super awkward and I didn't know what to think. I just thought the man was doing what he probably did to all his grandkids. But his "that's a good girl" remark was pretty cringe the more I think about it now.

I was working in retail several years ago, and one of my coworkers did this and asked when I was having the baby. I was so embarrassed to tell her that I'm wasn't pregnant, I was just fat. She apologized at least. But just because someone is/might be pregnant doesn't mean they lose their personal space bubble! If anything, it gets bigger! On the plus side (I almost typed 'size' there by accident...), that was one of the things that made me start working to lose weight. But yeah, when I get pregnant, I swear I want a maternity shirt that says "No touchy my tummy! >:("

Hey I'm kinda similar to that. When I'm anxious (worst in 1 on 1 conversations with people who aren't comfort people), I tend to dissociate and to me that's worse than seeming rude by doing stuff with my phone, because at least then I can absorb at least some of it. I've recently made a move into using stim toys which are useful but not distracting enough a lot of the time to stop the disassociating. If that makes sense

I swear, sometimes I wish smartphones didn’t exist. (I’m on my laptop now, and that’s practically as bad since I’m visiting mom.) I just want quality time with her! She’s 71 and not in good health. Whatever "dream" job we might imagine, it will never be wonderful all of the time. Clearly there are many people in the world without the means or options to choose their work, but there are many who can choose. By making the best choice and making the best of that choice, it is then a matter of attitude and perspective to enjoy the best parts and make it through the worst.

I second this. My husband has had a small business for a few years and it's had its fun moments, but we're planning to sell/close at the end of the year. He works loooong hours and we can't even pay him minimum wage (our employees get $16-20/hr. We're glad to pay them something decent for our area! But labor is just expensive, that's how it is). Rising material and energy costs, managing schedules, replacing employees who move on to other things, just so much stress. He's ready to move on and work "normal" hours making more (since even at min wage he'll be making more, which is a little over $13/hr here).

With modern technology, workers have been increasingly productive, yet for the last 5 decades, our wages have stagnated while we've worked more and more hours while achieving less financial stability. All the gain has gone to the oligarchs. There is no good reason why the rest of us are still working 40+ hours per week, with most people struggling to pay the bills while we have billionaires' staring their own space programs because they got bored with their mega yachts. We should get to enjoy our lives, not work ourselves into an early grave.

Technology has been more productive but that means more workers getting a job done faster and then standing around yakking until more work is ready. But work at a job with low technology, understaffed and high volume of products and you can find the most hardworking, productive employees.

My stepfather got one social security check before he died of lung cancer. And all those " wait to collect and youll get more money" are a bet. In US, if you start collecting at 62 you get x dollars a mobth, then at 65 you get 1.3 x a month. Yes, you get more per month if you wait, but get paid fewer months. If I wait until 72, I would have to live to 89 to get the same amount as if i started at 62. And the odds of making it to 89 arent good.

To each their own. Like, if you really, really can't stand working for someone else's business then that should be motivation for you to figure out how to work for yourself. Some people would rather just go to a job, do their job and go home and enjoy the rest of their day and work the amount of hours they need to live a comfortable life. If it's the job you hate, for pete's sake leave. You're not a slave. You have freedom to work anywhere you want. The challenge is figuring out how to get the job you want, and knowing what you want. That may take time and experience. I thought I was good with a desk job, looking pretty everyday. Nope. I've found I'm happiest with a back production retail job, with many tasks to do and physical labour. Sounds terrible when described but actually doing the work is fun for me, and I'm getting exercise and losing weight. I get more breaks than at my old desk job and the people I work with are supportive. Headaches, floaters, gut problems are fading.

People Are Sharing Things That Shouldn't Be Socially Acceptable In 2022, And Some Are Controversial Not wearing a seatbelt. BACKSEAT TOO. Let me tell you a story. We had a girl in our house, basically a medical foster placement. Your typical 4-5 yo before her ‘incident’. Her family was going somewhere together, mom and grandma (I think) and they strapped her into the kid seat. But didn’t strap the kid seat into the seat of the car. Head on collision, and this little girl (+kid seat)is sent *through* the dash board. Can’t walk, talk, feed herself, be a 5 yo. Had a chunk of her skull smashed to bits, repaired, removed again because of an infection, and a plate added. Ffs people. Wear your damn seatbelts. You become a potential projectile for the other people in the car too. No one is safe.

People think it's ok because it's 'their' life; but it's not just about you. It's also about the trauma the emergency workers suffer when scraping your mangled body from an accident scene. It's also of the money all of us get charged to pay for your unpaid medical bills. If you suffer a traumatic brain injury, you can easily run up $5,000,000 in medical bills that you'll never be able to pay.

This could be accidental. We've had 4 kids and sometimes trade out the seats between vehicles. At least once I remember the seat forgetting to be strapped in, before we drove luckily. But also there's been at least 1 occasion that each of us has forgotten to harness a toddler into the seat before we got on the road and had to stop to secure them. Accidents happen

This one also confuses me.. so... I mean - maybe I'm wrong but... here's what is generally expected of us (and I can understand why): Show up for work (whether it's for your own self or someone else, doesn't matter) clear headed, ready to go, get things done and do it smartly (or as smart as possible. We all have dumb days). This person usually gets complimented on their professionalism, efficiency, etc. This person has been me (that I've read through reviews, comments, reports, etc. ). However... the 'cool dude' (guy or gal, btw) wanders in... starts boasting LOUDLY about how WAAAAASTED they got on the weekend, how they might STILL be sooooo hungover.... and... two weeks later, the manager/boss/hiring person/whatever decides you, the one they were saying was 'such a good worker', is no fun, and thus not a 'right fit' - but drunky mcdrunkerson who screwed up all their work repeatedly and boasted about being wasted? Awww... they're a BUDDY... YEAH they're gonna get that promotion!

This reminds me, I had a high school classmate that came back from spring break, bragging how she got so wasted and vomited all over the beach. It was weird that she would brag about underage drinking and vomiting. I mean, do you know anyone who gets the flu then laughs and brags about how they projectile vomited?

Drinking is for fun, like any recreational drug. It's not to look cool or show off ("look how much I can drink without passing out!"). It's for fun, and should be done in moderation, like with any other drug

It's really quite simple. It's about money. Marajuana was made illegal because the best stuff didn't come from the U.S. Now that we're seeing the best stuff being grown in labs and such here in the US, that's changing. Heroin would probably be legal if poppies were native to the US. Always follow the money. Alcohol and tobacco are big business. Same exists with online gambling. The reason they don't want it is because so much revenue was leaving the country. So they shut it down. Now they're slowly bringing it back run by US companies.

I believe they legalized marijuana because living in the US has been getting more miserable as the years have passed. The people in power needed a way to pacify as much of the population as possible. This way the leaders don't have to do things that would actually help the the rest of us. They can continue with policies that benefit themselves and the wealthy. .

I think getting a little tipsy is fine, if you know how to handle it (when my father got like this he always did funny accents and told stories and made the night a lot more fun. He didint get crazy and he knew his drink limit ) but you shouldn’t be getting blackout drunk for the fun of it, or if you know you get crazy and will embarrass yourself when you drink I think you should do it in private or not drink more than one or two drinks.

This is mostly, and sadly, an American thing. It's because, for some dumb reason we have encouraged the phrase"the customer is always right". Which has led to entitled a*s customers who can never, ever, be wrong no matter how horrible or wrong they are. It's honestly our own fault.

Cherry-picking half the quote “The customer is always right—-in matters of taste”. For instance, even if the customer picks out an item of clothing that looks like total s**t on them, you just let them buy it without questioning their taste. That’s what the ENTIRE quote means. Absolutely NOTHING about them always being right in everything, and most definitely NOT when they try to go against a business’ return/refund policy..

I used to work for a tour operator and sat near the customer service manager. So many people would ring up wanting refunds for this or that. Mainly 2-3 months after their holiday had finished. His first question was always "Did you bring this issue up with the hotel customer service team or the manager during your stay?" 99% of the time the answer was no. "Sorry there is nothing I can do" bring the reply to that.

Within reason, correct. However we have ppl who buy a pair of glasses and then expect to be able to exchange them multiple times (including years later) with no cost to them.... EVERYTHING costs money- the employees, lab techs, materials, etc. At some point the store is basically paying the person to take the glasses. Absolutely ridiculous

There are some people who will just "FIND" a reason to call you a failure - it's recognizing who these people are... they're the ones who... no matter how much you DO succeed... all they can EVER focus on is "You didn't succeed by MY standards". Likelihood is that they are so UNself-aware that they don't realize that they'll always find some way for you to not meet their standards. Oh... you won a nobel prize? But you don't have KIDS... you FAIL! You make 7 figures a year and have children? BUT... your spouse doesn't earn as much as you! YOU FAIL! It's like... okay, I've had enough. Me and my bf agreed from before our kids were born that we should not post pics of them online. Including via private messages on messenger/facebook. We don't want to do it because a) pedophiles and other predators that go for children and b) if any of our kids should end up being famous or a politician or something we'd hate for them to have pics online of them as babies or in embarrassing situations as preteens etc for haters and opponents to find and exploit. Oh and c) we hate being spammed with other people's kids on SoMe and believe that the trend must end somewhere.... we are willing to start NOT spamming ppl with our kids' photos. Lol. So in this household there won't be pics of our kids online until they are old enough to have their own accounts and access to posting stuff themselves. Our friends and family knows and respect this as well.

As an amateur photographer I get a lot of flac from people assuming I'm taking pictures of them. I'm usually not. I'm taking a picture of an interesting shadow play in a public square and you just happen to be here. Also it's 100% legal at least in US to take pictures of anybody in public places. If this ever becomes illegal we'll lose entire wonderful genre of street photography that brought us masterpieces from people like Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Garry Winogrand and others.

It's legal in many countries to take the pictures but illegal to publish them where the public can access them, or to sell them (stock photos etc) without permission: you have the copyright, the person has reproduction/portrait rights. It can get more complicated (news photo etc), I tried to keep it simple here.

The more I learn about disabled people, including those with invisible disabilities, the more I know that unless asked, don't help. They want to do things on their own and have a sense of independence. It could even be part of their therapy. So, just hands off.

Ah, ableism. Ew. Protip: treat people how you would want to be treated...and put yourself in their shoes. Would YOU want someone to push you around without permission if that's how you need to get around?? Why can't we just treat each other like fellow humans with wants, needs, and dignity???

Also, ignoring the wheelchair user and addressing the person pushing it... I had to be quite firm with the nurse who addressed me instead of my partner, who was sitting in the wheelchair, as if he couldn't speak for himself, or make his own decisions.

This needs to be WAY higher. Happens far, far too much. The abuse, creepy disrespect, and violent discourtesy disabled men and women get is unbelievable. Climbing over, kids and adults squeezing around (and landing on top of the person, kneeing them in their injured back in an effort to push them — I could go on and on. Even punching them, or smacking the in the face with their bag or kicking their cane out from under them because the able bodied person was in a hurry- then keeping going or claiming the person tried to rob them. Too many shocking things to list. Even for someone simply struggling with a door - don’t assume you are helping by pulling it open. Get the person’s attention and ASK if they need help. One elderly woman nearly face-planted on a marble floor because the person on the inside thought it would be helpful to pull it open while she was holding the door handle and pushing. Because she was looking at her walker’s position at the time, she didn’t see him do it. ALWAYS ASK.

Anyone play Stardew Valley, and Penny "helped" Old Man George with his mailbox and pushed him out the way because he was in a wheelchair? And you can side with George that what Penny did was rude, and she should have asked if he needed or wanted help. That.

I'm a wheelchair user and this happens a lot. It's also f*cking annoying when people keep asking if you need help. I move myself with hands. So when I want t check my phone, open or close my jacket, or something else that I need my hands for I'm standing still. And when I'm standing still I doesn't need help. If I need help, trust me, I will ask for it.

Strangers touching all over babies. Pinching cheeks, picking them up and kissing them. I’ve had people come up to me at a store and open up her car seat cover to see her. And I’ve had people that know my mom (strangers to me) come up and kiss her and pinch her cheeks and pass her around when she was just a little infant. None of them cleaning their hands either. I enjoy seeing people that I know holding and loving on my child but at least ask especially if you are a stranger.

Plus the constant need to overstimulate them. Had this at work, colleague brings in her new baby who is lying in its pram, totally calm and just peacefully looking around, enjoying being chill, when another colleague comes along and has to start tickling and groping the baby, making loads of silly noises and daft exaggerated faces. Why??? The poor mite was just totally happy and chill and now they’re all wound up and have been needlessly disturbed from their rest.

My son was born with red hair. I had people coming up to me saying things like they would kill to have a child with red hair or they're going to steal my child away and then say they were joking. Pissed me off to no end to the point that I almost got violent with a couple of people who would approach my child and me with their arms reached out like they were going to grab him.

My son had to wear a hip dysplasia harness from birth to 2 months. I kept him wrapped up from the waist down whenever we went out, to avoid this exact type of woman. One had the nerve to pull his blanket off and demand, what's wrong with your baby? I told her to go f**k herself.

Plus, the whole kissing on the mouth thing. My stepdaughter (6) somewhere picked up smooching people right on the lips, and it's absolutely a health risk for children! (Plus my husband and I find it very weird and unnecessary) She tried to do it to my twins when they were newborn, but fortunately desisted quickly when we asked her to please only kiss them on the cheek or the head. Even I myself would never kiss my children on the mouth, and I've chewed up food for them when they were starting solids.

I would like for noone to show their underaged kids on social media, not only YouTube. Kids are too young to understand what it means to have their faces shown online and often they don’t even get asked. We need to protect our children better! Parents who humiliate their children and share videos and pictures of said humiliation are the worst.

What's wrong with monetizing Youtube channels, though? If people couldn't monetize their channels, no one would ever upload on Youtube because there would be no point. Of course, some would still upload just to provide entertainment for people, but big creators like MrBeast wouldn't create their amazing videos because they can't make money off of them, and would have to work other jobs to make a living

I used to watch this comedian until more and more of her videos were less about funny skits and more about her toddler's medical issues and life development. It felt like this poor kid had lost so much privacy to his own life. I think she believes she's just spreading an advocacy for parents with kids on the spectrum/autism but it felt really weird getting these constant updates about what his doctors were saying about him.

Even if it's sweet, the initial intention is to force the kids to be in the public eye whether they want to or not. Kids will just go along with parents so they either don't get in trouble for giving "attitude" or because they feel like it could be a fun experience not knowing the ramifications.

Yes. Looks matter. Let's get real here. Yes, someone out there will find you attractive. In a world with 7 billion people, it's going to happen. But please don't b******t and act like like being ugly, overweight, or having mental or physical disabilities doesn't make you FAR less attractive to most people, jobs, or otherwise. It's a lie . ( I'm fat btw) also! Just because you are any of these things does not make you any less WORTHY of love. But it does make it MUCH harder to find it. And there is NOTHING wrong with anyone who doesn't find you attractive. Attraction is very important in relationships. It doesn't make anyone shallow. You are allowed to like what you like. It IS however a huge problem when it comes to job and living opportunities. But it's a real and undeniable thing that is DEEPLY rooted in our biology going back to the caveman days .

"last person on the planet viability only"... then got angry at ME for being offended. Or even more subtle... they'll outright MIStreat me in relative to someone else. Example - I ask "So the plan is to watch the movie then have dinner?" the group will just POUNCE like 'What, you're making our schedule now? Maybe I'm hungry now, why do you keep assuming things?" - not 2 minutes later... the last person joins our group asks the SAME question... but the response is: "Oh yeah, we're totally going to go to [restaurant] after the movie... but if you're hungry now we can switch that, what works for you?"

How about throwing them out the window still lit. My sister and I saw a guy do this once at a stop light. She ran and grabbed it, met up with him at the next stoplight and pushed the lit cigarette trough his open window into his lap saying "You dropped this" then ran back to the car and locked all the doors. Then the light turned green and we waved to him as he rushed our car cussing and screaming as he brushed the burning embers from his crotch.

I, every now and then, try to throw it into those little inserting holes from a distance that I likely rely on luck alone, and when I did that the first time, I hit from like 2 meters into a 2 cm hole ... and thought, cool, my aiming is supreme ... and ever since, it got worse. But, after failing, what's the matter to pick them up and dispose of properly? Don't get how one could not do that at least ... the world is not an ashtray, at least it's not my ashtray. It's kinda shiddy, a giant toilet of unique shape (for toilets ... planets all look so), but at least, may it be clean here and there...?

Did . . . did BP censor "cook," or did you accidentally type a different word there? 😂

My grandmother, born early 20th century, raised her sons to be able to cook, clean, sew, wash and iron - basically anything to run a house. She believed a man should be able to do anything that women were doing. Of course the nonsense that women her age didn't work or were always in the home should be dispelled too. Perhaps that was true in the middle/upper classes but not for her or even her mother and grandmother..

There have always been working women in society.

I know how to cook, prepare and pack meals - I just don't like my own cooking.

A million years ago on my first day at college I was checking out the dorms and I was in the laundry room. I just caught the end of a conversation of a mom with her also 18-year-old son. It finished with"like this young girl right here, she'd love to do your laundry if you're just nice to her." Knowing how to take care of yourself is a life skill. Maybe we should stop learning about 18th century poets in school and start learning about how to manage a home. Or how to save money so someday you can have a home

To each there own. There are people out there who also think everyone should be able to count back change, do long division and hand sew perfectly. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

Lawns. They're unnatural, useless and need too much water.

Unnatural? I don't get this one. I have a lawn in front of my house, with some flowers and small trees, never water it.

I think they mean large, featureless, prefectly manicured lawns.

We need more gardens!!! Especially as food prices are going crazy! Grass just wastes water

They are where we sit and socialise in the summer, not useless at all. I live in an area of plenty of rain, so no water needed.

I would just like to be able to sit and socialise without the sound of 3 competing lawnmowers buzzing away. It's like smoking in public places - you don't realise how much it annoys you when it's everywhere, but take it away and you notice the huge difference.

Lawns are a weird outdated symbol of wealth, literally invented to show others you can afford to waste land. Guess what: we can't afford to waste land! Please use it to grow food and/or promote biodiversity.

I fully agree with you. Planting and promoting native flora instead of plain grass is always preferable!

Where I live, we gotta have short grass and neat lawns or else it’ll be a snake paradise 😭

During lockdown, my lawn and garden helped my mental health as it gave me somewhere to spend time in the fresh air and away from the house. It also gave me something to do (gardening) when options were limited. I have friends without a garden who really struggled.

Nobody's trying to take your garden away. The specific issue is lawns, especially in drought prone areas. I personally would love to sit outside at the weekend without hearing the constant buzzing of lawnmowers - we wouldn't tolerate that level of noise from our neighbors for any other reason, but for some reason we have to "put up and shut up" when it comes to lawnmower noise.

This one doesn't make any sense! They are very natural. And they're very useful as they contain ecosystems within themselves. There are a lot of insects that rely on grass and flowers and whatnot. Except spiders they can go straight to hell.

There's nothing natural about a monoculture grass lawn. They were invented by ultra-rich English aristocracy as a way of flexing their money.

Very much location dependent. If you live somewhere hot and dry where grass needs to be brought in and watered regularly to prevent it dying, it's a fair enough point to say it's an unnecessary waste. Live in a colder, wetter country grass grows naturally without the need to water, and if you stopped cutting it you will very quickly end up with a mass of bushes and tree seedlings taking hold

After this summer's drought. All the actual grass in my yard is dead. My "lawn" is still green, though, thanks to most of it being clover, wildflowers, and moss.

No thanks, I want some nature around my home. I hate concrete jungles and too little space around homes. :/ Plant some flowers or let a few weeds grow. No need for perfectly manicured ones. Just have it not overgrown, ya know?
