Some people take more time than others to wrap their heads around jokes. Innuendos and clever puns usually carry a hidden meaning, which might seem confusing at first. In fact, research shows that nearly 70% of people laugh at jokes they don’t understand. An abundance of such instances can be found online, as the internet is a treasure trove of jokes, witty comments, and other frivolous material to make people laugh.

Here at Bored Panda, we dove into the depths of the That's the Joke subreddit to bring some examples of people unintentionally missing the gag line. And they might be funnier than the actual jests. Make yourself some popcorn and start scrolling through.

P.S. If you want to continue the involuntary abb workout, make sure to check out these jokes that are so bad they’re actually great.

Research suggests that humor and insight comprehension stimulate the same brain areas. This implies that both require a bit of effort to be fathomed. It comes as no surprise, since humor is a complex form of communication.

It not only relies on linguistic means but involves other important components, such as perception and context, among others. Listening to grown-up jokes during family get-togethers didn’t seem so funny as a child, did it? While now you’re cracking one-liners about politics together with uncle Tom. This is due to a better understanding you get that comes with experience and knowledge in certain fields.

Research shows that when stated in a humorous way, the message is retained better. In addition to that, according to the same research, humor comprehension in the brain correlates to considering other people’s psychological state.

Also known as mentalization, this ability is crucial in order to use humor as a form of communication or entertainment. Only when you are able to understand others can you begin to understand what might be funny to them.

A detailed analysis of humor and mentalization shows that a joke is best within a certain frame of intentionality. Different levels of intentionality comprise the process of mentalization and account for how well comedy will be understood by the audience. The person telling the joke has to reach a level high enough to be funny, but low enough to be intelligible. That emphasizes another factor when it comes to understanding jokes—knowing your audience.

Research on audience characteristics states that the listener’s tendency to laugh is a great factor when it comes to delivering jokes. People tend to have a rather fixed sense of humor, which helps if you know them well. That is why adjusting your content accordingly might save you from a moment of crickets instead of laughter.

Nevertheless, knowing your audience is not always possible, especially if the jokes are told to the vast public online. Luckily, in instances like that, the receivers can find solace in the helping hand of the internet. The survey about people that laugh without understanding jokes also stated that more than half of the respondents (56%) have had to look up the meaning of a joke to comprehend it.

I just decided to keep my last name - mainly because my bf doesn’t care either way and it means so much less paperwork.

Paperwork. But also the weird patriarchal ownership over women that trades us between men, from father to husband, and wipes away our matrilineal lineage. But also…paperwork.

The whole tradition of taking your husband's last name is because you became his property. I recently remarried at the age of 50, not changing my name and all my ID this is my name for the last 50 years... why would I go to all that hassle, it means your bank accounts, driver's license, SIN card, passport...

I wish I could go back to my maiden name, without having to explain it has nothing to do with a divorce.

I changed my name. But that's because I hated my family and wanted nothing more to do with them. Otherwise it would have been up for debate. I might even just have kept my name. Changing your name is such a hassle. It's not worth it. And I'm not the property of my husband.

My maiden name is my middle name, since I never had a middle name. But since me and my sister don't have any kids, my parents are bummed that there's nobody to carry on their last name.

I didn't take my husbands last name. It's Smith! No thank you. Plus I knew I wasn't going to have kids. And I just didn't want to change my last name.

I took my husband's last name, my SIL was so weirdly angry. She said it was against feminism to take a man's name. I do get that point, but as we take our father's names over mother's most often - I don't see it as any different. She just was against me joining the family really. Most people I know just do what is most convenient, a lot of professional women find name change a big hassle. My sister kept her name for ages, but got annoyed to many times in customs trying to fly without her husband but having different name to children. She changed it by deed pole as much simpler if you don't do it when you get married. Lots of people keep names because it sounds better.

My husband's family hate me, to such an extent that he has no contact with them (his choice). I didn't want to take the surname of a bunch of people who loathe me. I'd rather keep my own surname - it's a testament to my deceased father (and much cooler than my husband's surname anyway!) Plus... no paperwork!

I kept my last name as well, coz I like the sound of it and too much paperwork involved. Also, it does not feel like me with a different surname.

After proposing to the woman I’ve been married to the past 43 years, she was considering what to do about her last name. I told her she could take my last name or I could take hers or she could not change her name at all or even change her name to Kennedy. She decided to make her last name her middle name and take my last name.

I super can't wait to take my bf's last name. My last name is Pitt and I am asked, on average about 6 times a year, if I am related to Brad Pitt. It's annoying. Ironically though, if I married Brad Pitt I would definitely take his last name! lol

In college I knew a girl with the last name of Bitoff, and - I'm not making this up, I swear - she got engaged to a guy w/the last name of DiBona. We so wanted her to hyphenate.

Technically, her last name is her father or mother’s, right? So, I suggest people start choosing their own last names that are all different! :)

Imma be honest, it took me way longer than it should’ve to understand what the post meant😳. Edit to clarify: I meant it took me to long to figure out what “rub one off” meant. It’s a running joke among my friends that I am the most innocent man alive. For example, I had to have Hickeys explained to me last month (I’m 18)

I pause multiplayer games to feed my yelling cats and dog and turtles. Then I get tons of angry screaming that’s ALMOST as bad as the cats’ from the people who ditched me because I wasn’t moving and run ahead, only to discover I was the only one who had enough weapons to beat that thing up front. I’m a jerk in multiplayers like that.
