This Online Community Shares “Totally True Stories That Definitely 100% Happened” And Here’re 30 Of The Most Hilarious Ones
I'm fine. What are you talking about, you do not look fat in those jeans. I'll give you a call.
We lie all the time. And we get away with it quite often, too. But some folks push their made-up narrative so far, it's hard to imagine anyone actually believing them.
So they end up on the subreddit r/thatHappened. Its members share evidence of "people telling outrageous tall tales that would make Walter Mitty proud" and they have compiled quite the archive since the creation of this online community in 2012.
Here are some of its best gems.

Jesus Christ. What An Idiot
Sometimes people lie just to inflate their image—some think this motivation is the reason behind President Donald Trump's demonstrably false statement that his Inauguration crowd was bigger than President Barack Obama's first one. But people also lie to cover up bad behavior, as American swimmer Ryan Lochte did during the 2016 Summer Olympics by claiming to have been robbed at gunpoint at a gas station when, in fact, he and his teammates, drunk after a party, had been confronted by armed security guards after damaging property.
We can find similar examples even in fields that are dedicated to the search for eternal truth. And one doesn't have to look far, either. Take the physicist Jan Hendrik Schön, for example, whose purported breakthroughs in molecular semiconductor research proved to be fraudulent.

Running A 5k In 10 Minutes
Lying is something many of us are very good at. We do it while interacting with strangers, co-workers, friends, and loved ones. Turns out, our capacity for dishonesty is as fundamental to us as our need to trust others, which ironically makes us terrible at detecting lies. Being deceitful is woven into us, so much so that it would be truthful to say that to lie is human.
The ubiquity of lying was first documented systematically two decades ago by Bella DePaulo, a social psychologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. DePaulo and her colleagues asked 147 adults to jot down for a week every instance they tried to mislead someone. The researchers discovered that the subjects lied on average one or two times a day. Most of these untruths were innocuous, intended to hide one's inadequacies or to protect the feelings of others. Some lies were excuses (one subject blamed the failure to take out the garbage on not knowing where it needed to go). Yet other lies, such as a claim of being a diplomat's son, were aimed at presenting a false image. While these were minor transgressions, a later study by DePaulo and other colleagues involving a similar sample indicated that most people have, at some point, told one or more "serious lies", like hiding an affair from a spouse, or making false claims on a college application.

Researchers suggest that lying as a behavior arose pretty soon after the emergence of language. The ability to manipulate others without using physical force likely conferred an advantage in the competition for resources and mates, akin to the evolution of deceptive strategies in the animal kingdom, such as camouflage.
"Lying is so easy compared to other ways of gaining power," Sissela Bok, an ethicist at Harvard University who's one of the most prominent thinkers on the subject, told Nat Geo. "It's much easier to lie in order to get somebody's money or wealth than to hit them over the head or rob a bank.
"Experts are learning that we're prone to believe some lies even when they're easily contradicted by clear evidence. These insights suggest that our proclivity for deceiving others, and our vulnerability to being deceived, are especially consequential in the age of social media.
So in the case of r/ThatHappened, it's nice to see that we can still retain our ability to distinguish truth from fiction.

While These Children Weren’t Oxygen Starved, The Poster Was At Birth
Weird how some folks wear one for a full shift and are fine, they must be ghosts or something I guess.
Maybe these people are are shoving their masks up their nostrils..
Load More Replies...If you feel ill from wearing a mask, that's because you've psyched yourself out so much you're having a panic attack. Calm down. (And get professional help if you need it.)
my entire family (minus me) is antivax + antimask, and i keep trying to tell them that all the "miniature heart attacks" and "new asthma" is just what they've brought on themselves. i have ACTUAL asthma and horrible anxiety but never once have i had any problems wearing one.
Load More Replies...I wear one from 08:30 until 19:00, I'm a smoker, I can breathe just fine. The "sudden change of oxygen" experienced when removing a mask has never and will never make anyone vomit, because there is no sudden change of oxygen! You fucktard!
The kid needed to vomit so he took off his mask to do so. How is this not obvious?
Load More Replies...It's the world's greatest mystery how doctors and other health care workers can wear a mask for hours and hours during a surgery and still live.
You whoever you are make me want to puke with or without a mask. We nurses an doctors must have superhuman constitutions to wear them for 12 hour or longer shifts.
While I will admit it’s incredibly unpleasant if my fat, asthmatic, smoker body can handle a 12 hour shift wearing a mask while pushing someone in a wheelchair in the dead ass of summer for a nice long walk and I ain’t dead yet I think your wife who’s sitting in an air conditioned airplane for two hours MAY have some kind of health problem unrelated to mask wearing
Because surgeons are doing this left right and Centre after operating on people.... SMH
I'm in middle school. I wear a mask for 7 hours a day and my only problem is a sweaty mask guard. Lying idiot
As a chef, I wear a mask 12-16 hours a day, doing very physical work. And I'm a 25 year smoker and I'm overweight. Miraculously, I have no ill effects from wearing a mask. Isn't that weird?
And the Oscar for the best performance in a self-induced drama in public goes to...🙄
I wear it for 7 hours at work and people come in for 10 minutes and keep telling me they can't breathe...and here's asthmatic me, somehow managing to breathe in a mask for hours on end.
I wear a mask for 7 hours a day for school... apparently I'm dead
I recently wore a mask to sit at the airport/fly for 4+ hours each way, and had zero problems breathing. And I have asthma. BS.
I work in a hospital. 12 hour shifts, mask on all the time, the only time we are allowed to take them off is the eat or drink. I also have a cardiac situation. Had a double bypass 10 years ago. I don't have a problem breathing and the masks don't give me any chest pains.
CDC should have first started a tiktok mask wearing challenge before mandating it.
The concept of doctors wearing them in ORs has been lost to all the anti mask crowd...
I'm an asthmatic and have no issues whatsoever (must be undead or sth as I apparently don't need oxygen?/s) When I visited my brother in Germany we had to wear an even thicker type of mask than the blue surgical ones and there was a heatwave. Yeah, it was hot and extremely uncomfortable, but my brother survived his entire day at work. Plus the mask is actually a benefit for me in winter - heats the air before it hits my lungs, preventing an asthma flare-up.
I wear a mask for around 10 hours a day while I'm working and have done well before covid happened! I can honestly say I've never struggled with the "sudden change of oxygen" when I take it off... Some people are so frickin dramatic
Wow, I guess I have super powered lungs or something. I can wear my mask for 8-10hrs at work 6 days a week and I have NEVER felt ill, light headed, etc. Not saying it's not possible, but these people out here saying it happens 8/10 times or something.
This has been going on for well over a year. My job is considered "essential" so I never went into lockdown. In the ten hours from leaving for work to coming home, my double-masks never leave my face except to have lunch. The job involves heavy lifting. I enjoy nice long walks during my breaks. If the masks were affecting my breathing, I think I would have noticed by now. (Note: This is the moment their argument switches to "MACKS DON'T STAHP COVID, SHAKE UP WEEPLE")
If Gwyneth Paltrow sold masks at 300$ each these people would never take them off.
I wear one for 8 to 10 hours a shift and...nothing. just wear the damn mask
Must be the joy of lack of dust in my throat and lungs which brings me uncomplicated through a workday with mask. The opposite might be the case for COVID sceptics, however masks are to wear for quite long without any reactions during ot after the wear!
I am guessing an allergy to one of the components in the mask caused this
As we all know, operating rooms across the world are full of vomiting, fainting doctors and nurses...
Isn’t it funny how myself and my siblings where able to wear a mask for 30 hours on a flight (multiple flights) and where completely fine?
I have to wear one during my 4 hour dialysis treatment and live to tell the tale. I do it 3 times a week.
You must wear a mask over your nose and mouth, not in your nose and mouth 🤦🏼♀️
So do surgeons who have to wear masks for several hours at a time vomit every time they take it off? How are they able to operate while having all those heart pains? 🤪
And ... it couldn't possibly be that the poor kid got air-sick and puked because of THAT?
I wear a p100 respirator every single day, and I've worn one while doing strenuous exercise, and I've never even felt uncomfortable breathing. Yeah, I've had breakouts around the mask seal sometimes, and got the straps caught in my hair, but that's the most discomfort I've experienced.
People better wish and hope like he'll I dont become a billionaire because on that day I will have the dangerous mouth breathing idiots rounded up and kept in fema camps until I can immunize each and every one of them then drop their sorry asses on a deserted island they will be pissed, but alive. Plus side, we can finally get beyond the immediate threat of fools spreading covid.
I would have felt ill after seeing a kid puke from motion sickness or altitude sickness. Except I'd already be sick because of my own altitude sickness!
You're out of shape wife who's 89 yrs old, but it was the mask causing heart pain
Couldn't have been motion sickness. They put barf bags on planes for the masks.
