Nothing is safe from wear and tear. Time gets to all of us. Fortunately, there is a subreddit called 'Fix It' where people post pictures of the things that they need help with, and the members of the community provide them with clear instructions on how to take care of the issue, saving them time, money, and a whole lot of headaches.

So in order to remind you that becoming self-sufficient doesn't mean isolating yourself, we put together some of the most popular cases we found on 'Fix It.' From broken appliances to damaged furniture, where there's a will, there's a way!

That's flashing, not siding. Tuck it back in, under the shingles and nail it into the wall with roofing nails 1-1/4" long. Put a blob of 100% silicon on the nail heads. Don't fall off the roof.

Yep. That's what happened to my dad. Fell off the roof while trying to put up Christmas lights. Catastrophic brain damage. He was bedridden, in diapers, had a feeding tube, the whole nine yards for 20 years. BE CAREFUL on ladders and roofs. You don't want to destroy your family.

Your shower was likely installed with tiles directly over drywall, so once moisture seeps through it damages the drywall and tiles can cave in. The tiles and drywall need to be ripped out. You can do this yourself, it's actually kind of fun, just avoid the wall with the faucet until you can pick around it so you don't damage the plumbing. Then the wall has to be checked for mould, then it needs new drywall, a vapour barrier (critical), then tiles - those should be done by a professional.

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

That's a big problem - it probrably means the wall was not made with the proper materials for a shower, and it's deteriorated from damp. Either from leaking pipes, or seepage if the tile wasn't adequately sealled. If it's rented, call the landlord to fix it - it's not your fault, and he needs to get it up to code. If it's new build, go to your builder/seller and ask them to make it right. Otherwise, call a contracter, because you're going to need to rip out the tile, and the backer board, and possibly fix the pipes. Don't put it off, it will get worse.

They used drywal behind the tile probably, which got damp through cracks in the grout and essentially dissolved. You use cement board behind shower/bath tiles.

Cracked tiles in a bath surround often means mold. Pull those tiles off. If there's mold back there, you need a professional.

I’ve seen several times where a do it yourself shower has just drywall behind the tile and not backerboard. This is typically how you find out. The wall crumbles. If you’re lucky the framing behind it hasn’t rotted away yet.

Since a woman named Martine Postma established what is considered to be the first repair café in Amsterdam in 2009, the concept of free events at which volunteers with valuable skills assist participants with broken possessions has spread far and wide.

Over 50 cafés operate throughout the Netherlands, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

I was a toolmaker who serviced the dies that make ranges/stoves. This is called a draw wrinkle, and it comes from not having enough pressure in the draw pad during the creation of the oven wrapper. This cannot be fixed without disassembling the range, and replacing the entire oven cavity, which you do not want to do. If it's under warranty, contact the manufacturer. If it's not, new range time. This defect is entirely cosmetic, it will not affect the operation of the range at all, nor the safety. Source: I was a toolmaker for Whirlpool. Edit: I can also tell you that is not a Whirlpool/Maytag/Magic Chef product. The geometry of the ribs is different, because I milled them.

Please clean your water dispensers thoroughly every once in a while! So many things can form/get lodged in the water path which you can’t really see and might not even notice in your water if you’re in a rush to drink. From bugs crawling up inside to mold developing. My roommates and I discovered roaches inside our room’s dispenser after it was left unused due to Covid restrictions keeping us from returning to our room. Had to empty nearly one large 12 L bottle plus cleaning chemicals down it to make it safe again.

How flimsy is the jug? I'd think that only a slight vacuum would stop the water flow, and the pressure differential on he outside would be fairly small. I definitely wouldn't expect it to deform the jug where the water is.

Nope. Use hairspray on ball-point pen marks. Works like a charm (particularly on cloth, vinyl, or leather) without scrubbing, so no risk of damaging the surface. If it's felt-tip or permanent marker, then use a white board pen to draw over it before using the hairspray. Years of wearing a lab coat and carrying pens combined with a 'creative' toddler have taught me much in the ways of the ink.

Most doors come pre-built inside a door frame that is secured to the house frame. Replacing the short screw with long screws attaches the door catch to both the door frame and the house frame. A long bolt lock does the same thing.

The societal shift toward products that are untouchable, robotic, and useless when single parts break down has given rise to a number of negative consequences, such as growing landfills.

Overall, the U.S. produces 268 million tons of trash annually. The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of trash per day, compared to 2.68 pounds in 1960, and most of it is comprised of recyclable items.

While we can't just slash the number in half in one go, the subreddit 'Fix It' is doing its part.

Happens to us periodically. We’re not sure exactly what causes it every time, but we’ve learned that we shouldn’t use a couple types of soap, and if it happens it just needs to do a rinse cycle with no soap and it’s fine again.

Based on the pattern it looks like they probably have a toddler who puts their grubby hands on everything. :) You can't bother cleaning until the kid is in bed for the night or it will just get dirty again. And I did that once - didn't rinse the dish soap off of something I put in there and came back to find foam gushing out of my dishwasher.

Confess. Apologise. Offer to pay for repairs or replacement. I don't think your friend is smart enough to repair it or replace it without being caught. And once they are caught, they will be evicted and have the incident on their record. Better to confess. Say "I was wrong. I'm sorry. I will pay money to correct my mistakes." Even if they are unreasonable about it, think how much more unreasonable they would be if they were lied to and tricked.

The Tap Hose No Longer Retracts, How Do I Fix This?

The Tap Hose No Longer Retracts, How Do I Fix This?

There is normally a weight at the back of the sink that is attached to the other end of the hose, it’s likely that this has become hitched onto something, you should be able to dislodge it and pull the sprayer back up.

We have the same problem. After reading this, I went to the kitchen, figured out which part was the weight, and freed it from the electric box it had landed on. This is probably child's play for most, but a noteworthy achievement for me. THANK YOU for a post providing such immediate benefit.

When we moved in, the sprayer that came with the sink didn't work, but I preferred the sprayer in the faucet, so I bought a faucet with the sprayer built in and didn't worry about the other one. Recently, I decided to remove the old sprayer and went to measure what size cap I would need to cap off the connection point only to discover that the sprayer had never worked because it had never been connected.

The most likely culprit is stuff under the sink. Stuff that storage space, the weight lands on something and no longer pulls the hose. You need a fair clear area around the hose for the weight to behave.

Under our sink, the hot and cold outlets are close to the center line so the hose from one of these faucets would get caught under one of them all the time. eventually went with a taller gooseneck without the hose.

Oven Glass Panel Exploded Without Warning. What To Do?

    u/slapcornea:
I am an appliance repair tech in Canada but I am pretty sure this is the same in the US (if that's where you are). Call the warranty number for this range and tell them what happened and that it is currently a danger to your family. No matter how old this is, the manufacture will repair it for free. This is true for all brands in Canada and likely the USA due to several class action lawsuits.

There's not a tape that exists that's stronger than a really good rare earth magnet. Tape can remove most of the shavings, but once 90% is gone the rest will have more surface area in contact with the magnet.

Buy replacements, cheap at hardware store. Turn off breaker, make sure no one can turn back on while you work. Test outlet with anything that plugs in. Use flat screwdriver to remove cover plate. Use Phillips to remove outlet from wall box. Hold onto metal end of outlet, keeping away from black and white wire connectors (extra safe) Remove black wire first, move black wire to the side (extra safe). Remove white wire, keep away from black wire (extra safe). Remove green wire last. If there is no green wire, your house was badly wired. Attach green wire to green screw on new outlet, then white wire to silver, finally black wire to copper. Carefully place back into box, fasten Phillips screws, place cover back and GENTLY tighten plastic cover. If you tighten cover too tight it will crack, you just want to make sure its not loose and.

This happened to me! We have no carpet in the house except throw rugs, but one day while bringing the shopping in and running the gambit of animals weaving through my legs, I dropped one of those Costco size bottle of detergent and of course it landed in the only spot that had a rug. I did that and a year later the blue was completely gone. All I did was blot well and cover with a throw rug. I had a lot of medical stuff that year and forgot about it. It apparently just kept fading. Thankfully, detergent is usually low-sudsing, and what was still on the carpet broke down, so the carpet cleaner did fine.

    u/DogRiverRoad:
That is never coming out. people commenting "you can sand that out" don't have a damn clue what they are talking about. You try and sand that out and you are going straight through the veneer, no the table looks even more s**t. You can try stripping it and using oxalic acid over the whole top, but that it not going to make this disappear. The righ thing to do is tell you landlord and offer to buy the table off them (not in its current condition, but the use condition it was before the burn mark)

You can buy adhesive veneer (thin wood or plastic sheets). Contact paper works too, but is much more obvious and will wear fast. Won't be back to new, but will be back to different and still nice. If the top of table is textured you can either sand or add a layer of epoxy and add veneer before epoxy is dry. Do a rough cut of veneer, press flat, then wait a week and trim edges with a craft or utility knife to get clean edge.

I'm more interested in what the cat did to make this happen. Most likely knocked something over that fell on it but still.

Everyone in disbelief that a cat did it, I'm sure the cat didn't do it with his/her bare paws. ;). The cat almost certainly knocked something heavy off a nearby shelf/ windowsill/ countertop which fell and broke the toilet.

Yes the pain from a cut due to broken porcelain, oh it's bad. Dropped the lid to the tank one day when I was I was cleaning it. Found a broken piece I missed two nights later with my foot.

Answer is wrong - sort of. If they are tight on money there are several adhesives that will bond porcelain and hold the place in piece / prevent sharp edges. The break does not appear to be structural . It won't be "good as new" so if it is a rental they should be honest but if it is their own toilet and they want to delay buying a new toilet, a quality adhesive will work.

You won't make it as good as new, but that piece can definitely be glued back on with epoxy. considering where it is it wouldn't be that easy to cut yourself even if it wasn't fixed. Odds are there's a wall or the end of a bath tub a few inches away, so you'd normally only be near the sharp edge while cleaning.

Take the monitor outside. If it doesn't stop, buy a new one. If it stops beeping in freash air, you have a problem. Stay outside and call your local fire station, not the emergency line, ask if they do free carbon monoxide tests, because your alarm is going off. If they don't come out, they can atleast advise you on the next step.

Internet says EOL is 7-10 years. But also says you can get false alarms if dirty. == "You can clean the inside of the detector of dust and debris by using either an air compressor or vacuum hose. The outside of the detector can be cleaned with a damp cloth. A clean detector guarantees it will only go off when it's supposed to, and spares you the trouble of stressful false alarms."

That just happened to me... started to beep at 3am. My roommate went to the store to get a new battery and it kept beeping. We opened windows just in case, took it out into the garage... nothing doing. I got a replacement and no more beeping. Ours was 5 years old.

Either you pay to replace it because you fill it up to wash regularly or use a suction cup and some epoxy resin glue because you know there's a chance you'll break a new sink as you love glass liquid soap containers and will let the landlord take it out of your deposit when you move out since most folks don't get it back anyways.

I would leave this to the professionals, but otherwise the folds can be straightened with an iron on low heat, you should definitely put parchment paper between the iron and the paper. (I have ironed newspapers so they can be made into a big book for archiving). Edit: I don't know what happens if the paper has a shiny surface!

Our local framer had a specialized humidifier to very slowly soften the piece as it was flattened. Whatever it was, the old folded pencil sketch was revived like new.

The lowest steam setting on an iron will do a better job of removing creases. Then again you could just buy a new one, such things usually come rolled up in a cardboard tube, with no creases.

I have a similar question but about a piece of warped particle board (less than 1/4" thick) that is a drawer bottom. Best way to 1) unwarp it and 2) keep it that way? Moisten then flatten with bricks? Spray with an adhesive (which kind?). Or just replace because no solution will work well?

    Danish Susanne

I would replace it with a plywood bottom. That would be easier than straightening the warped one, and make the drawer able to carry more weight. Get plywood in the same thickness as the old bottom, so that it will slide into the grooves, that are already there.

Exactly this. The inside of the windshield picks up a haze quickly and often. Scrubbing with a clean dry napkin and no cleaner actually works surprisingly well. You'll see me doing it at stoplights all the darn time. Every couple weeks at least. The right conditions at night can make that haze frustratingly dangerous.

Help. Wrote On The Toilet Lid In Whiteboard Marker And It’s Not Coming Off… I Have An Inspection

    u/totally_bored_dude:
So this works on whiteboards... If you leave something on too long, it will leave what you are seeing. What I do is take the marker and just go over it again and quickly wipe it off. It tends to "lift" the stained part and since the new mark isn't fully dry, it comes off. You could try it on a small section to see if it works.

FYI, this also works if someone uses a permanent marker on a whiteboard. Use the "Dry Erase" marker to lift the permanent marker and get it off the board.

Slipped And Broke The Shower Wall. I Plan On Remodeling In About A Year, Any Temporary Fixes For This Until Then So Moisture Doesn't Get Behind It?

    u/pbaran11:
Speaking from experience here this happened because the condition of the plaster/render behind the tiling is in poor condition; it’s likely already sopping wet. You should be able to fall against the tiles without this happening. You’ll need to take down the all loose tiles and assess what’s there before you repair this. You’ll probably not want to wait a year, though it’s up to you but more of the tiles are going to start falling off now.

While waiting for grout to set and then sealer to dry we taped up a cheap plastic tarp over the tiles on all three walls. Made sure there were no gaps by over lapping the plastic at least a foot. In this case I'd remove anything that might be moldy or wet and hang the plastic until repairs could be made.

That will get you by temporarily, so you can get in and out that door until you can replace the handle (which will hopefully be the same day, depending on the time of day it broke, or at least the next day).

We had a front door that would stick and a k**b would be nearly impossible to turn during certain times of the year, so we put levers on, instead. One day, I was sitting on the couch in our living room and two of our goats just casually sauntered past behind the couch and down the hallway to the bedrooms.

Jb weld will probably fix it and hold for a few months to years depending on how rough you are with it but it’s probably better to just replace. Murphy’s law is that the temp fix will come apart at the absolute most inconvenience time possible.

If you clean both surfaces with alcohol, you could try super glue for a temp fix until you find a new latch set on sale. But you have to reset the parts precisely. Make a dry fit to see if the parts match tightly, otherwise buy new.

There's almost certainly a cause, most likely water related. I have seen tiles buckle just from temperature changes, however. Usually in unoccupied houses in hot climates where the AC is off. There are higher end versions of grout and thinset available that have a little bit of flexibility for expansion that are definitely worth the small extra expense.

The only food safe method would be to dremmel it down to a smooth texture, use ceramic glaze paint (you can try to match the color somewhat) and get it re-fired in a kiln. This is assuming it is ceramic pottery. Do you have a place like Color Me Mine near you?

If this was made at Color Me Mine originally, that blue is most certainly #35 Caribbean Sea.

Look up the Japanese art of Kintsugi and repair it (or have it repaired) that way, if the piece that broke off is still relatively intact. GF just might find it rather beautiful repaired that way, as many well-done Kintsugi pieces are gorgeous.

This is a cold air return and those are needed for proper HVAC usage. Now using a magnet cover for a small amount of time will be fine. Do not permanently close it off though.

I think the person asking is less worried about being able to see through the vent than the noise that comes through when they have (ahem) company. Unfortunately, there's really nothing they can do about that. Lived in an apartment like this once. Eventually all of us roommates just had to agree we didn't hear anything and pretend no one ever had s*x so that the awkward mornings would end. In these cases, a good pair of very large headphones or silencing earplugs are your best friends.

How about when either one or both of you have company over, you temporarily(~an hour/however long sound needs to be muffled for) tack up a sweatshirt or small towel/blanket. For something more long term, I'd say to measure how big the opening is for the vent and buy new ones that have slats/grooves that are adjustable, can be both opened and closed. Similar to the air vents you have in your car.

I felt as stupid as it sounds). Appliances aren’t made to last anymore. Even if you find the part, shipping and processing will cost the down payment of a brand new one. M O'Connell

They were probably hung with drywall screws. Drywall screws are intentionally brittle so that if one strips out or breaks during drywall installation you can just snap it off and move on. In In this case, repeated stress causes the weakest screw to break, then the remaining screws carry more load and they break until the whole thing falls off. They are completely improper for any other use, but people do that because they are the cheapest screws.

I've seen this happen when someone has use weedkiller on the hard standing, and this has killed the grass. The solution is time. The grass for the surrounding area will recolonise it. However, if you want a quicker fix, there's a mixture of grass seed, fertiliser, and colourant that can be sprayed over the area (protect the hard standing). Although, the quickest way is to take out the dead grass, and re-turf the area.

    Fixing Scuff Marks On Eyeglasses?

    Fixing Scuff Marks On Eyeglasses?

    u/[deleted]:
I used to work at lenscrafters. Your AR layer is peeling. You could recoat, but no one will recommend it. You'll see uneven spots of AR coating then it will bubble and peel from that. You'd need to strip the whole lens and re apply and for that there is no machine or process to do it as well as the AR coating being the most costly part of the lenses next to the machining of the lenses. Lenses themselves cost very little whole AR coating is expensive. Basically need new lenses.

I can't tell exactly what/where I'm looking at. But this isn't stained/finished wood. It is some type of laminated veneer. And you went all the way through down to material underneath.

I'd gues that they had a bit of swelling on one side of the joint, most likely because of water damage and tried to sand it down in an attempt to fix it, not realising it was a veneered top.(You can clearly see the finish that has been sanded away.) 3 options.. paint everything, add a new veneer to the whole countertops (not easy, costly and the hardwood siding will be lower and should then be replaced aswell) or replace that part of the countertops (if you can find something that matches, else scrap everything).

Idk, I personally wouldn't cut corners with something that's high voltage, glass, and topped with scalding hot and heavy liquids. Then again a clear tempered glass top would look pretty cool, like a transparent Gameboy.

If you can find one that actually fits just right and is the appropriate material and thickness, go for it. I get the feeling you won't save much money that way though. It's still a pane of glass safely delivered to your door.

Consider all the time and potential issues you'll completely skip buying the correct part.

Skirt board is the way to go. It’s a large piece of wood that has the cutouts for steps in it, which you then can put baseboard along the top of so your stairs get one smooth line of baseboard going down. It’s either remove existing baseboard or remove and add skirt board.

If it's the finish panel, you can replace it by removing the corner molding, remove the panel that's probably glued on (which looks like a laminated hardboard panel) and replace it - but if it's the actual cabinet box's side panel, this is a MUCH more involved replacement since it's assembled and installed with countertop.

Don't over-react. Even a big notch like that out of one stud is almost never going to result in an issue. Since studs are generally only seeing compressive forces, if you are worried you can cut a tight fitting piece and wood glue it back in (or construction adhesive). It will be as strong as it ever was. No need to tear into wall to replace entire stud.

It does baffle me why he didn't just move over when he hit the stud.

The question remains, did you fix the leaky gutter that caused the problem in the first place?

Good job, So in the winter, when you get 3-4" of snow on the roof, buy a roof rake (about $25) and pull it off as far back as you can reach.

If you've never done this kind of thing before it can take a while! Especially if you don't have the best tools (which a first-timer probably wouldn't have).
