People Share What They Found Thrown Away And The Phrase ‘One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure’ Has Never Been So Real
One person's trash is another person's treasure. And this Instagram account helps with the transaction.
Stooping is a longtime New York tradition: someone casts away their no longer needed furniture (and other things) on the sidewalk in front of their home and anyone who needs them can salvage the items for whatever use they desire.
But in summer 2019, stooping made it to social media as well — an Instagram account called Stooping NYC started sharing the best offers from the city's public display. From heart-shaped ottomans to vintage dressers, it has both the funny and the stunning, allowing the account to accumulate over 80K followers.
So continue scrolling to take a look at this collective exchange market because -- believe me -- you don't have to be a stooper to appreciate it.

Beanie Babies Used To Have Real Value! They Still Might... But As The Sign Says The Real Value Is As A Friend. On Cooper Street Between Knickerbocker And Irving.
According to VOGUE, the account is run by an anonymous couple based in Brooklyn. The idea started thanks to their son, “a wonderful little guy with special needs who loves to take walks.” Exploring their neighborhood on foot, the family would “consistently see all these amazing treasures that people were just putting out on the curb waiting for somebody to collect, or for sanitation to take away.”
What A Phenomenal Addition!
My grandfather would take furniture off the street and repair it, so to honor that my mom and I always see what we can find on the side of the road. Our latest find was an antique tea cart that we sanded and stained.
When they launched the account, they planned to curate their own discoveries, but it only took a week of posting for them to realize much of the scouting would be happily done by fellow New Yorkers. “The community grew quickly, and people were excited to not just be privy to the finds, but also to participate in the hunt,” they explained. “We receive upwards of 100 DMs some days, from people all around the five boroughs now. What started out as a hobby has become a real service to the community.”
We Love This So Much. Share Please! On The Side It Says Take What You Need And Give What You Can. 3rd Street Between Hoyt And Bond.
The couple recognize the phenomenon as part of New York's culture. “There are so many people living on top of each other, and because New Yorkers move often, most stooping likely happens because of circumstance. While we never intended for the page to be focused on the eco-conscious first and foremost, this concept has really highlighted what seems like a real desire for upcycling in a way that is interactive, while making people feel like they're part of a broader community.”
6 Bed / 4 Bath...cathedral Ceilings...victorian Style...close To The Park. 8 Inch Ceilings So Potential Buyers Must Be Under 1 Ft Tall.281 Prospect Ave
With an ever-increasing following, the Stooping NYC team have developed a firm idea of what works on the account best. "The themes we have come to notice are that there are three categories of high performers," they said.
First, there are the functional: shelves, bookcases, kitchen islands. Second, the quirky and unique: stiletto chair, demon throne, stoop bear, and finally, the downright 'can't-believe-someone-would-put-that-out' beautiful. The third category consists of copper tubs, pink velvet chairs, and designer glass coffee tables. As Stooping NYC get more and more submissions, they are becoming pickier about what they post in an effort to be responsible about what's advertised: nothing “bug-ridden,” no food, and “nothing that could be compromised from a safety perspective.”
Simultaneously, they've created a separate series, the “before and afters,” with the hashtag #stoopingsuccess. “We had an unreal one this week where a couple claimed a double sink they found from our post and installed it into their Catskills Airbnb.”

Load More Replies...Can anyone please explain this, I'm not from the US. Why are they on the street? Is this not illegal? Are they aimed at homeless people? So many questions...
For the places that do not have compulsory voting this could attract some who may decide to have their say too!
Ooooh! I love to vote from home! Our voting system in Germany has even already-paid-for-stamps prints on the envelopes. Really convenient (if there is still a question during filling, it´s nice to google) and no more excuses possible.
Something tells me this is how those voter registration groups get into trouble.
Absentee ballots are the first thrown out in a contested election. Bush had several counties absentee ballots theown out by courts in 2000
Why are any ballots being thrown out? Why allow absentee ballots when they can be thrown out?

I keep thinking about bedbugs and cat urine. I've picked up some great pieces but that one rug that, when unrolled, reeked. Too many great pieces here. That delicate tapestry settee was stunning.
Dorothy; I'm with you. All these pieces are fabulous but I'd worry about the soft furnishings.
Load More Replies...How come they are throwing out such good furnitures in NYC? I am so jealous. In my country there are only crappy things placed out as garbage.. sigh
Because they have good furniture in NYC. These are probably people who have to move and can’t afford to take everything, or parents/grandparents either died or going into nursing home and the family is clearing out the house/apartment—-and are criminally uninformed about the value of some of these pieces.
Load More Replies...Be careful bringing home furniture that’s being tossed out. Mainly couches/chairs there could be bed bugs. And they’re a pain to get rid of once they’re in your house. Learned this the hard way!! Also potentially mold!
I agree, but it's easy to take a good look before bringing it home.
Load More Replies...I've furnished entire apartments via Council Pickups (ie "stooping" in Australia), a couple of times. Did it again recently after losing everything after a motorbike accident (they broke the law. I should have died), and going back to university. I swear, it's possible to create the most fabulous, eclectic, hippie-boho-retro homes for next to nothing. So glad that this is done in NYC too. I'd love to move to NYC in the future and create a council-pickup apartment. <3
The culture is everywhere. We would "alley surf" the eve of trash night here in L.A. My friend would find pathetic things and turn them into beautiful functional furniture. Now that I have my own house, Im the one putting stuff out for trash day, to find it's disappeared beforehand! Bookshelves, chairs, even an old Hammond organ!
Yep! We used to watch from the balcony and bet how long it would take before someone picked it up. They're quick in LA
Load More Replies...People who love picking up furniture from the streets also love bedbugs. I hope.
I live in the wrong part of the world.... HEre, people usually just leave trash
Wow, and just look at how many perfectly good cars people left by the curbside!
I live in a condo community, and people around here toss the best stuff all the time. My living room sofa and 2 flat screen TVs (all working perfectly) are my favorite finds so far. I hate to think of all the stuff I miss--and why on earth they don't call the local charities to pick this stuff up (there are several in my area).
I'm here thinking that this is how a number of ghost and possession stories start.
We need this idea here in the UK! Com on Brits where are you? Down at the local tip, no doubt!
Try Freecycle here. No one's leaving their free furniture out in case it rains!
Load More Replies...I am too upset to look through them all. What good, good finds. A bit jealous, lol!
If only I lived in NYC. My husband is a whiz at fixing and refinishing old furniture. We’d have the coolest, most eclectic decor—-and probably have to open a shop to house and sell the rest.
picked up so much furniture back in the old days, but now you're not allowed anymore to put it on the curb like that. When I moved in with my boyfriend, half of my stuff i didnt need anymore left with complete strangers who picked it up as soon as i put it down. Someone even carried my old fridge 3 stories down, that goodwill didnt wanna have because it was dented (but still perfect)
The idea is great, but I would too be afraid of bedbugs and such so I would only stoop 100% wooden/metal things
Well in my country unfortunately they throw out real garbage. Furniture used intensely and broken beyond repair, or repair more expensive than buying the new piece. A bit envy here...
I’ve always said, you can furnish a whole house with what stupid people just throw away and set out for the bulk pickup. I myself and couple roommates completely furnished a 3bedroom 2bath house with stuff people put out at the curb. We were working at a carpet /flood repair business so we just cleaned everything and then brought it all in (minus beds, we bought mattresses and beds..). TVs, couches, kitchen stuffs, dressers, bruh, I’m talking a whole house worth...
I think some of these were not stoop leavings. I just have the feeling that some were stuff that folks were in the middle of moving, and ran back upstairs to get something else, etc.
I'm pretty sure that in the UK this would count as dumping/fly tipping. But most of this stuff is in such good nick, I guess it goes quickly. I did once find a cerise velvet wing chair, which I could just about get into the boot of my car, but then I thought, I have nowhere to put it at home. So I left it. Someone else had had it by the time I went back home past that spot.
the velvet armchairs and sofas, and the miminalistic shelves and plants are amazing
In the UK we have freecycle where you advertise this kind of thing. I don’t think it’s legal to put it on the pavement.
Yep you can get fined by the council. It's to stop people just leaving any old s**t on the street. Personally I think you should leave stuff out that could be useful to someone else, but then I guess everyone has different ideas of what would be useful :P
Load More Replies...There are a lot of things that I definitely wouldn't share during COVID-19! Please stay safe.
I just want to see what those people have who left these? I mean most of these are just too good to be left like this(I wouldn't take the sofas though)
I find it so interesting that you can simply throw out things like that onto the sidewalk in the US... here it would cost me a fortune to do that... makes you think twice about what you throw away ^^
Last night I found on the street, near a dumpster, a very pristine half body mannequin. I was on my scooter so couldn't get it. Do I need a mannequin? No. It was free? Hell yeah!
Velvet is obviously no longer fashionable in New York. So many lovely couches and chairs up for grabs.
I thought it was a legend. But NYers do put the most amazing things out on the sidewalk. What can I say... If you want to find dog s**t, garbage and holes on the sidewalk, come to Montevideo (Uruguay).
In Brazil probably all of these would be trashed the moment they touch the sidewalk. We can't have cool things...
Generally when someone is moving, they have a van or truck and a crew to help. No one with any sense leaves the stuff they're keeping out on the sidewalk, especially in NYC. These are items the people didn't want to keep, and didn't have time to try & sell, or arrange a donation pick up. Plus a lot of places you could donate to have been shut down as non-essential, so not taking donations. And some have maybe redecorated & just couldn't be bothered, and it also appears to be a tradition to set stuff out in this city. I've done it in my hometown of Kansas City Missouri, as do a lot of people.
Load More Replies...I keep thinking about bedbugs and cat urine.
