Avid Bored Panda readers may remember the piece we did on the subreddit r/OldSchoolCool, where people share content from the past that still looks fantastic today. But now, we have something similar yet totally different for you — its weird "cousin" r/OldSchoolRidiculous.

Created back in December 2013, this online community is pretty much the same as its "relative", only it laughs at previous eras instead of celebrating them. The outdated stuff these folks feature varies from offensive social norms to tacky fashion trends but they all remind us of the irreversible passage of time.

When it comes to describing their past, people tend to exaggerate. For example, parents who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s lie about their youth to make them seem cooler.

Research shows the most common fibs are that they were punks or goths or went to Glastonbury Festival or Ibiza before they became "too commercial."

They also claim to have been part of anti-Government protests or have been present at key sporting events.

I remember buying perfect chocolates replicas of the big brands. First cig when I was 8, started smoking regularly at 11 and smoked for 25 years. Nearly 20 years smoke free! Shows how effective this “priming” was.

Yep, you could get "sweet cigarettes" made of sugar (with a red dot on the end) in the UK, had lots of them. When you were ready for the real thing there was a handy vending machine on the side of the newsagents...

Forget the fact that this normalized smoking to kids, giving them a "lighter" as a toy probably caused more than one housefire.

The lighter in question was a toy that used batteries. Now if the kid thought that all lighters were toys, that would be another problem altogether.

I remember those bubble gum cigs from when I was a kid in the 70's. They actually had some kind of powder in them so that when you blew, 'smoke' would come out.

Now I feel deprived. I had the play cigarettes but I never got a lighter. Different kinds actually because I can remember bubble gum but also a candy one. And there was one that would puff out a tiny bit of 'smoke'. The smoke was something like powdered sugar or starch or something like that. As a teen I tried a real cigarette once or twice and thought they were gross and I never liked the smell of others smoking. Still a horrible toy. Spoiler - even the bubble gum was not very good because is was kind of hard to make the cigarette shape hold.

Everyone smoked everywhere. Your doctor would be smoking in the exam room. College students and professors smoked in class. Candy cigarettes were sold everywhere so we could emulate our parents and their friends. Alcohol was pretty prominent, too. Kinda surprising so many Boomers are making it to old age.

"Play" cigarettes were made from chocolate, bubblegum, and chalk. They were ridiculous! We looked ridiculous! However, these were so we could pretend to be adults in the 50's-60's. Why we wanted to that is beyond me too!

I remember getting those candy cigarettes when I was a kid. And yeah, I tried smoking. And thought I had everyone fooled into thinking I WAS smoking! But, my brother busted me. I wasn't inhaling the smoke, just breathing in JUST enough, holding it in my mouth and then blowing it out. I hated the taste and it made my chest hurt. Ironically, almost every single member of my family on both sides smoke; I just couldn't handle the smell or taste of them.

Trips to Glastonbury or Ibiza, YBA art exhibitions, and edgy haircuts are most commonly lied about for those who grew up in the 1990s.

More than half of the people surveyed (57 percent) admit they weren't as cool as they make out, while some parents say they can't actually remember what they got up to.

I have worn glasses since I was 12 (I come from a family that’s myopic on both sides). I would LOVE to have prescription rain glasses like this! I hate going out in the rain because I end up not being able to see clearly out of my glasses because of the raindrops. You would be amazed at how raindrops can affect your vision through glasses. It can sometimes get rather scary. So social rain glasses with wipers would be great. I could put my regular glasses in their case, and use these—-much like I do with my sunglasses.

This is not 'ridiculous'. I have DONE this. Except the holes were cut in the base of the stumps with a chain saw and we used electric primers instead of a lit fuse. But it's not like anyone came and cleared your fields for you. Around our (very old) farm you'd find empty dynamite boxes and blasting cap cans here and there. Back then they did it probably more like in this picture. There is nothing wrong with having a book to tell you how to do it properly.
