With so much consumerism everywhere, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of plastic, spontaneous purchases that don’t last long.

Not only do they pollute our world (and our homes!), they give us little if any extra value. They don’t have any memories attached to them. They don’t keep any stories to tell about them.

Unlike antiques. These beautiful pieces of art, furniture, kitchenware, you name it, have been touched by history in ways that no modern thing will ever be. And if you, like me, are a fan of antiques, we’ve got a real treat for you!

Welcome to the Reddit community known as “Antiques” that is home to a buzzing community of, like people say, “old stuff” lovers. Created in 2009, the group has proven to be as relevant as ever, sharing some of the most beautiful and most interesting examples. Scroll down for our selection of the best ones shared here and be sure to check out part 1 right here.

Having written many books and articles on the topic of valuing art and antiques, Dr. Verderame was happy to share what’s currently buzzing in the antique market. “Antiques increase in value over time and typically the most valuable categories of antiques include fine art (paintings, sculpture), furniture, fine jewelry, and historical objects,” Dr. Verderame said. She added that right now, it is a good time to buy fine art since now it is a buyers' market.

Meanwhile, collectors collect all types of art and antiques. “Some of the hottest collectibles now are 1980s toys, vintage clothing and accessories from the 1960s and 1970s, Art Deco sculpture and lamps, and costume jewelry, and color glass like Murano and Blenko pieces,” Dr. Verderame explained.

From a collector's site: "True first edition copies of Winnie-the-Pooh have green cloth binding with E. H. Shepard’s illustrations of Pooh and Christopher Robin stamped in gilt to the front board. First edition copies have a yellow pictorial dust jacket with 117th thousand printed on the back flap and 7/6 net pricing on the spine. The front and rear papers are illustrated with a map of the “100 Aker Wood.” Copies in near fine or fine condition with a similar dust jacket and all the first edition points can cost around $10,000 with good or very good copies priced for a couple thousand dollars." https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/collecting-winnie-the-pooh

Medievalist here (PhD), take those to a antiques (jewelry specialist) person immediately because those are an amazing find! Judging from the picture and the settings and filigree you are looking at two pieces from the ~very~ early Middle Ages (c. 6th century) or even from the end ofthe Roman Empire. This is literally, literally buried treasure. So cool!!!!

In our previous interview with Dr. Verderame we found out that an antique is an object that is 100 years old or older. "I determine antique status by looking at materials, condition, and design. I appraise an antique's value by comparing it with other similar items and using my decades of museum and appraisal experience to provide a value,” she said.

Moreover, Dr. Verderame bases her values on actual sales records where similar items have sold recently. “I use my love of antiques to appraise value and value differs based on the type of object appraised. Many factors determine value depending on the type of object presented." The most valuable categories of antiques typically include fine art, antique furniture, and antique and vintage fine and costume jewelry.

More and more people are getting interested in antiques, Dr. Verderame said, especially young adults. "Because we can buy all types of antiques with ease now online, people are enjoying the thrill of the treasure hunt for antiques as well as the excitement of selling them or keeping them.”

You are going to have antique car enthusiasts and antique car dealers contacting you about it after seeing this picture!

“I show many examples of how I find the money for people on my YouTube channel series called Real Bargains. Young adults—my fans—are interested in antiques and vintage items because they are well-made, unique and interesting, and are conversation pieces,” Dr. Verderame commented.

“Many realize that they can buy a vintage or antique object for very little money and use my tips to flip for profit or keep it for their own collection and enjoyment. Many people are interested in antiques because of the memories they spark or for the connection to a bygone era," she explained in our previous interview.

My mother has her grandmother's. Can still use it. I took it apart, polished and cleaned everything inside, oiled it up and reassembled it. Works as good as new. Mom prefers her Janome though, that thing probably makes coffee as well.

I am absolutely pea green with envy! I have wanted this entire setup, the cabinet with a working treadle sewing machine, since I was in my twenties. It’s on my bucket list, along with a bell Victrola. I have a suitcase victrola that still works, and have played my 78s on it. A bell Victrola would be a wonderful item to add to my collection.

check in the drop down portion, there should be two secret drawers if it's old enough. i bought one like that in 1972 at an auction, but didn't find out until 1985 that it had secret drawers. i found some interesting old papers and photos in them. the secret drawers are vertical, in the center, and look like carved pillars. good luck!

I own a similar one and the fan moves as well. They are called a “naughty nodder” or “risqué nodder” from the 1950’s, made in Japan. They are porcelain, the movement isn’t because of the smoke, but movement when you touch the leg and fan.

This is incredibly beautiful. I must say, I have it's "mate". A huge hutch/curio situation that I use as an entertainment center in the lesser used of my two living rooms. I found it at a YARD SALE of all places. You did wonderfully!! Congratulations!

NEVER put anything on it without a placemat or potholder. Pine oil on it regularly, and don’t let kids bring metal objects that can scratch the wood. This is a true treasure!

It looks more like a vinaigrette that would have held a small sponge behind the fret work, soaked in something strong but nice smelling. They were popular in the 1800s due to very poor sanitation standards.

Black light is 395 wavelength and makes the green glass glow. UV light that is 365 wavelength turns clear uranium glass green. I have a extensive collection of the clear glass. It can also turn some blue glass green. There is much more out there to be discovered.

These were used to show your political allegiance. Like MAGA hats basically. Ribbons were first used in American politics in the 1820s. The rise of textile mills and the printing industry made it practical for candidates to print their faces and their taglines on everything from kerchiefs to aprons. Ribbons, however, were cheap to make and easy to carry to campaign events. They quickly became the most popular way for citizens to proclaim their political allegiance.

Appears to be a fine Chinese Pewter serving or warming dish. At auction it could fetch over 1000 dollars. Do not polish or clean it; that will remove the patina and reduce the value a great deal. I love it!

Please don't.!!!!! It's not 'canned' but bottled, and you can see the water level has gone down due to evaporation, so it's not completely airtight.

I've got an unopened bottle of J.M. Watkins vanilla from 1946. I know it's 1946 because my grandma remembered when the family moved out. No one bought the house and it eventually fell down. I found the bottle upside down in the scattered wreckage of the house so the seal stayed wet. My wife won't let me try it. I bet it's fine.

Google says: The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills. But they are still legal tender and may still be in circulation. All U.S. currency issued since 1861 is valid and redeemable at its full face value. Jul 13, 2022 -- but I don't think I could part with that!

I've got a bunch of old "silver certificate" $1 and $5 bills from the early 1900s... it just dawned on me that a couple of them are more than a century old now... anyway, they are still valid as currency, but I would never part with them like that. They, along with some vintage silver coins, were a gift from my grandfather who died when I was around 9.

It wasn't propaganda, people had pig clubs where a people would club together to buy the piglet and feed it from all their scraps. When the pig reached a certain size and was slaughtered half went to the government and the other half was split between the people who had fed it. Britain very nearly starved during WWIi thanks to the U-boats blowing up so many merchant navy ships.

These days, in the UK, that would be illegal. Strictly speaking you cannot feed animals leftovers, trimmings of vegetables etc. I have ignored this for our chickens. They love lettuce and broccoli trimmings, leftover spaghetti (they eat it like they would worms), corn cobs, and meat trimmings that are cooked for them. These are the everyday treats for them that are so much more interesting than layers’ feed.

If grande wormwood, as opposed to southern wormwood is an ingredient, then it has thujone. The US lifted the ban in the early 2000s and tell absinthe is readily available. In the quantity it's present in absinthe, thujone is little more than a mild anti-anxiety drug that gets negated by alcohol. So start with an absinthe and sip slowly! Yum

No, people respected the maintenance outlined in the paperwork that came with it. Fans from this period require regular oiling (usually every 6 months) and if you keep up with that, they last forever. If you can't be bothered to do that it will last a few years and then quit. I've rescued enough modern fans from the side of the road to know that the same oiling recommendations still apply.

My parents collect antiques and have a working pump organ in their "parlor". I'm the only piano player in the family so they sometimes ask me to play it. If you enjoy cardio while you are making music then the pump organ will be right up your alley! :) It's a bit like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time. Once you get the hang of it though it's pretty fun.

I have played enough games to know that this is containing a demon, most likely a purple demon. From the look of it, I would recommend that you avoid opening it alone, please wait until your friends show up and you 4 have to be paragon level 350+ If you guys slay it, it will probably drop some nice mythical gear and some really nice jewels.

This is a telephone gossip bench. Definitely appears to be antique but hard to say from a picture. They haven’t really been popular reproductions so my guess is it is very likely antique. They were made so the telephone could sit on the desk part with storage for telephone/personal address books, message pads, pens etc. or it could sit near a wall mounted phone. The upholstery looks like it’s in great shape so you might want to consider having it appraised before reupholstering- if it is well cared for original upholstery that you could lower the value.

Antiques are supposedly over 100 years old, and home phones were pretty rare then so this is almost certainly a reproduction. Calls were expensive to begin with (and the butler would answer it!) so it's likely to be 50's/60's when calls became cheaper and you could 'gossip' comfortably.

I think the OP wrote "almost-antique" as antiques are customarily defined as 100 years old. Though the definition is loosely applied. Cars are considered antiques at 25 years so that 1997 Honda Civic is an antique / classic car now...

The clasp and chain look like 'Empire' type jewellery, which would be around 1815. However, there were plenty of revivals and I would guess this is maybe 1910ish. (Edwardian if UK) However, the original 'bag' would probably have been metal links, and this looks like a crocheted 'repair' sometime a lot later. Very pretty.

There are groups on FB and other parts of the internet that discuss how to repair and restore these radios. If you try to use it much without replacing a few inexpensive parts - they can either be a fire hazard or you'll ruin "expensive" $25+ vacuum tubes. Many of these radios work very well when restored. Unfortunately few are worth more than $100. Please don't gut the radio and make a wine cabinet out of it though. It is also easy to add bluetooth to the old radio with very simple, easily reversible wiring connections at the volume k**b.

If made before 1948, then it is legal according to the CITES treaty. You need to get it checked by an expert. Probably well before those dates. If after, means you can keep it, but can never sell it.

I always thought the conventional wisdom was, if your house is furnished, painted, and carpeted in an overabundance of neutrals, you need to break up the drab, dull, dreary, totally blaaahhh monotony by adding “splashes of color”, like non-neutral colored throws, pillows, wall hangings, tablecloths, maybe even one or two pieces of furniture in colors that go well with whatever neutral makes up the basic background.

Empire. From the wood and quality, it may well be 1815 - 30, but a good dealer could tell you for sure. Could be a revival piece from 1900-20. Likely European made.

In the UK all 'gold' finds have to be reported to 'the portable antiquities scheme', a govt dept, acessed via the coroner, believe it or not. They will date it, and tell you whether you can keep it (or sell) or whether you must donate it to a museum usually for a set sum.

The languiage is probably Old Church Slavonic or some variation. The actual alphabet visible on the pages is Glagolic - the precursor to the Cyrillic script, which many Slavic languages use nowadays.

I don't know what is happening with the comments, maybe here it'll work: It's not Glagolitic, although one can be excused of thinking so -- I actually know/used to know Glagolitsa, and got fooled anyway for a moment, until I tried to read it. But no, it is the Ethiopian abugida, used to write Ge'ez and Amharic, among others.

Check the construction. Pegs or nails—-and modern nails or nails that don’t look machine made? Check for wear on the wood too. A chair that was used on a ship would show wear. It would also have something on the legs that would anchor it to the floor so it wouldn’t “travel” too much in heavy seas.

Check to see if it's joined together without screws or nails. If those are present it's not authentic. If assembled with natural wood joints, then yes. The screwed on plate could have been added more recently, maybe it was on exhibit?

Mercurochrome, generically known as merbromin, is a topical antiseptic used to treat minor cuts and scrapes. When applied to a wound, the dark red color of the ointment stains the skin. It had been widely used as a household antiseptic/antibacterial ointment - especially for children - because it did not sting or irritate the skin when applied; however, it is no longer sold in the U.S., partly because of its mercury content.

When I was a kid, about 20 years ago, it was still widely used on minor cuts and grazes. It's still sold in South Africa but I can't remember the last time I saw someone use it.

I agree with Marie Dahme the mercurochrome did not sting it was the methyolate that stung/burned. I remember it all so well from when I was a kid. Methyolate was more yellowish and I think it used iodine as a base.

When I was a young fella, back in the 70s, we had this in our med cabinet. My Nan also had this and used it for everything, including bug bites, warts, cuts, scrapes, blisters, pimples, cold sores... Etc... Hated the pink 'beet juice' staining.

I remember this stuff didn’t burn but left like a pinkish dye on your boo boo. Now the methyolate did burn! But I don’t know if they even still make this. Anyone?

Sure it’s not a more recent military academy cadet’s uniform? Check the stitching. If it looks like machine stitching, it’s most likely way more recent than the 1860s. Also remember, Civil War uniforms took a lot of abuse in battle, so would only be in good shape like this one if they weren’t worn long. Or at all.

I have a miniature 'crate' of guiness (about 2" high with 6 bottles) that was given out the 1952 Olympics - one of my father's friends was a swimming coach. Naturally, my brother opened some of them and tried to drink them so some crown tops are wonky.

Since 200 years would date it to the 1820s, about 35 +/- years after the end of the Revolutionary War (ended 1784) and 5 +/- years after the end of the War of 1812 (ended 1815), so is it a book about the American Revolution? Because that would make an incredibly interesting read, as the war itself would still be quite fresh in almost everyone’s’ memories.

Are the sides a bit chipped? And are the 'chips' reddish? If so, it could be delft and from the decor, 17th or 18th century.(ie 1600 - 1799) Take it for valuation to a reputable dealer.

To apply those old decals, you had to soak them in water and then slide the image part onto a hard surface. If it wrinkled or tore, you couldn't fix it.

No, there aren’t any pins or marks or anything that would indicate it was part of a spell. It just looks like either an older brother was a real a*****e and buried his sister’s doll, or the girl who played with it died or just grew up and buried it, or maybe she decided her doll had died and buried her—-some children go through a phase where they like to dig, and burying a toy is a good excuse to get out a shovel. Would be interesting to go back into the records of the deed on the house, and contact any family members still alive to see if they can shed some light on it.
