I Found This Ring In My Backyard While Doing Gardening. After Cleaning It, It Doesn't Look Like A Normal Ring. Any Ideas ?

Answer: It's a Georgian/early Victorian mourning ring. The initials belong to the lost loved one.
They were typically made from gold (18k+) and enameled in black. Yours looks like it was made around 1820s-40s.

Why the downvote? Memento mori is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Best place to find a BOATLOAD of them is in the Cooper River in SC---you have to dive in really soupy water and run your hands (with gloves of course) and sift the sand and you would be surprised! Also great for very old bottles! Here is a photo of a few of ours. Carcaridon...c69af4.jpg Carcaridon-Megaladon-teeth-5d5b2e6c69af4.jpg

Answer: It obscures the car while being test driven, so the yet-to-be-released models are not photographed and published. The random "wave" patterns effectively hide the body contours and lines.

Yes, but the photo's won't be of any use because you can't make out how the car will look in real life. There will also be a lot of styling done before the car goes into production. It's to keep competitors from stealing design idea's or improvements. Just when Audi first came out with the DLR-led light strips in the headlights. They were the first and now all the competitors have stolen the idea.

When going skiing several years ago we saw several cars wearing covers that looked like onesies. Later we ran into one of the engineers. Turns out they were testing a new hybrid engine for a car company and needed to test in cold conditions. They looked so cute, I wished I'd been fast enough to take a picture.

This reminds me of when I young. My dad worked as in car sales, so he got to use the demonstration cars. This was in the 80s, so if a particular model hadn't been released they just covered the name badge with masking tape - not quite as sophisticated as this technique, but pretty effective, and definitely cheaper! Also, this makes me feel old!

I lived in a rental briefly with 4 other girls and 1 guy. We were planning on having a big party because 4 of us had birthdays that were close together. We had a calendar on the wall in the living room and had written "party" on the day it was planned for. Our lanlandlord crossed it out and wrote no. Which was weird enough- but we wrote it on there again but one of the girls got nervous and took the calendar down, put it in her room. When she pulled it out after the party is when we saw he'd apparently been in her room to cross out party and write no on it again- he's a creepy guy. He has a big red windowless van, and had a bunch of women's shoes in the back. Said they'd been "left behind" at places. He tried to give a pair to one of my other roommates. He's not allowed to list his rentals with the university here anymore.

Just for clarification there was work being done on the kitchen so it was expected that people would be in sometimes, but we were always supposed to know when they'd be in and they were only supposed to be in the kitchen obviously. Because of this we got SUPER cheap rent- obviously turned out not being worth it, seriously if a house seems too cheap and nice there's probably something not great going on. I woke up one morning and wrapped myself in a blanket to go smoke a cigarette on the porch- wasn't super dressed, hence the blanket- and the landlord and 3 construction worker guys were just in the kitchen. Unannounced. Not great.

Some of you might be thinking that my talks about mom-and-pop internet detectives are a bit far-fetched. But, the interesting fact is, that there are plenty of amateurs who have solved major mysteries! For example, BBC Future writes how Carl Koppelman got fired from his job at Disney and became a detective in his spare time.

Hermaphrodite means that one organism has both male and female reproductive organs. Garden worms are hermaphrodites (they have both spermatozoides and eggs) but that doesn't mean that one worm can reproduce by itself. So that there is bigger genetic variety the times when the spermatozoides and the eggs are ready for fertilization is different thus two worms must meet and exchange spermatozoides with one another and use those to fertilize their own eggs.

I am afraid I have to correct the answer. It's name is "pappagallo" (parrot). The "padella" does exist as a device, it is used to collect feces of hospitalized people who cannot leave their bed to go to the toilet. The "padella", as one can imagine, has a flat convex shape and a handle that allows to be used without getting your hands too close to the edges of the container.

Actually, that's called "the parrot", somewhat later than the era the pictured object was made, they were began to be produced in plastic and have a shape which resembles more a parrot than a kettle. For other more serious consistency matters, there is the other tool, much bigger which shapes actually resembles a pan and that's how it is called. Nurses and hospital workers worldwide were much relieved when a specific cleaning machine was invented.

In A Multi Storey Car Park. Is It A Passage For Rats? There Are Also Small Holes In The Floor And Ceiling With A Tiny Ladder Connecting Them

In A Multi Storey Car Park. Is It A Passage For Rats? There Are Also Small Holes In The Floor And Ceiling With A Tiny Ladder Connecting Them

Answer: Secret Industry by John Pym: The stairwells and lift lobbies of multistorey car parks are not usually areas where people pause to admire the architecture, so John Pym used this to his advantage. The model walkways and ladders replicate their full-scale counterparts and are a playful way of suggesting an alternative, unseen service industry at work within the building. Superficially mundane, some people may use the car park for years without being aware of their presence, while others will notice straightaway. The artist sees it as a reward for those who look more closely at their surroundings.

Glad you know your aunt may just be a little more than what you think.

Pretty soon, 90% of humanity will be useless. And unlike in the old utopian SF books, it doesn't mean we will all live a life of leisure and peace. It means 90% of the people will be poor and miserable. It's the reason I didn't go into AI when I got my Bachelors in computer science. The world of robotics and AI should require a great deal of thought on ethics, morals, and the future of mankind. I didn't think I was up to the task (age 29, 21 years ago). I realize now that most people have no ethics or morals or foresight, and/or think that if something can be done, it should be done, human society be damned.

Answer: In Denmark they are called a "gadespejl" It is an old invention, basically a mirror that made it possible to view the street from the comfort of your couch.

In Sweden, it's called a "Skvallerspegel" (gossip mirror). Spying on the neighbours without their knowledge is the best way to get new things to gossip about. ;)

I grew up near Trosa, it is really fun to sit in the rooms and spy a bit. But the tourist hoard often look in as well. Windows are full of greasy nose-prints along the main street. Odd fact, Trosa means "panties" :D

We have these on apartment windows in Amsterdam too, for seeing who's at your door without the aid of an entryphone. Often accompanied by a pulley system for opening the front door without having to go downstairs.

These were (sometimes are) typically found in fraternity houses with very traditional practices. Boozing is part of the rules, and you essentially drink until you puke, as everone drinks at the same time. After puking, you return to drink further. Sounds ridiculous and out-of-the-time, but these organizations sometimes even sustain the tradition of fencing without protection for the face...

What Is This Fish With Strange Writing?

What Is This Fish With Strange Writing?

Answer: The Lucky Iron Fish. I recall hearing that iron deficiency was a serious problem in developing countries due to improper diets that consisted of mostly pastas and rice, which are a poor source of iron.
The solution was to boil chunks of iron with food to increase the iron content but many were skeptical and hesitant to cook with chunks of metal in their food. The iron was shaped into a 'lucky fish' that would provided addition health benefits when you boiled water with the fish in it.

What people seem to be missing in the comments here, is that a POOR COUNTRY does not have $5 or $20 for a pot to cook in. They may be cooking in a discarded tin can. I live in one of the poorest countries in the world, in Guatemala, and people here still go into the forest to scrounge for wood to cook with, every single day. Or find wood in the river and let it dry on their tin roofs of their one room hut, walls of which might be covered with cornstalks to keep out the rain. Real poverty does not have an extra $5 laying around. They might be living on $1.00 per DAY for the entire family. Fresh greens are expensive also. This "iron fish" isn't being used in the United States, Canada, or first world countries.

Answer: we call em bee hotels, like many people already mentioned, it is for 'solitary' bees (solitary because they don't love/work/do in hives, but clearly, they live close to one another in this setting) although it can also attract many other animals. These things help the ecosystem.

It is useful in places where you get a lot of warming up and then freezing at night. The ice forms on the chain, which you can more readily access to break the ice. This keep the weight off of the gutter system, and prevents the gutter system itself from becoming an ice dam.

Yes, it shoots OC (oleoresin capsicum aka the active ingredient in pepper spray) balls, like paintball ...balls. The PROBLEM with these is that the balls do not always fly straight when fired, they may curve and arc. Sooo if you are hoping to pop one on the chest of a suspect, it may curve towards the face and eyes, thus the possibility of someone losing an eye. In paintball games they always wear eye protection.

What Is This Weird Half Truck And Why Is It Pushing A Flatbed Trailer? Is There Any Sort Of Advantage Of Pushing Rather Than Pulling It?

What Is This Weird Half Truck And Why Is It Pushing A Flatbed Trailer? Is There Any Sort Of Advantage Of Pushing Rather Than Pulling It?

Answer: Float Plane Mover. This truck's job is to move planes up and down a boat ramp into the water. Backing up an ordinary truck+trailer combo down a boat ramp is not easy. With this vehicle, the driver can look straight forward down the ramp rather than in his rear-view mirror, and since the steering wheels are at the back it's easy to align the truck's bed with the plane. Most trucks only load at a boat ramp once in a while, since this one does only that, it makes sense to design it specifically for that job.

That's not too weird to leave in a sink on vacation, but for a week, a bit extreme for such a short time. When I close up my parents' condo in South Florida because nobody is going to be there for months, I put vegetable oil down the sink drain to keep the disposal lubricated. I also dump bleach in the toilet and put saran wrap over it, then put something heavy on the closed lid because rats have been known to infest apartments by way of the toilet.

20 Years Of Research And Reddit Is My Last Hope! What Is This Thing?

20 Years Of Research And Reddit Is My Last Hope! What Is This Thing?

Answer: The Black Drum fish fossils. The Black Drum had a short deep body with a high arched back, but a flattish belly. The jaw teeth were small and pointed, but the throat was armed with large, flat, pavement-like teeth with which the drum crushed shellfish, for food. This characteristic separates it from the weakfish and the king fish.

A horse [something I can't remember] clam. Ixd come prepared with onions, potatoes and canned bacon. The problem was digging out the clam, but it was worth it.

What Are These Blue Tubes That I Keep Seeing In Berlin?

What Are These Blue Tubes That I Keep Seeing In Berlin?

Answer: to transfer groundwater to rivers because of the water level. Since the early 1990’s the groundwater level in Berlin has been rising. Due to lower water consumption the abstraction of groundwater has diminished and the city now has to cope with an extraordinary high level of groundwater.

Coke can dissolve a penny, you think it's not going to dissolve a gel cap? Those things melt at the slightest presence of water, let alone being submerged in phosphoric acid, the main ingredient in all soda. I'm not buying this explanation.

Found This In A House Built In 1930's. Colored Part Made From Glass, Handle Is Brass And Screwed Into It. What Is This Thing?

Answer: Candle cover, possibly home made. You'd have a glass or metal tray with a candle or two on it, put this over it to diffuse the light and make it prettier. They'd slowly snuff the candles as the flame ate up whatever oxygen was under the dome, so it was kind of like a night light that would 'turn itself off' after a couple hours.

It didn't have to be in an ancient period. Those could easily have been brought over in modern times. Just because they're from the 3rd to 4th century doesn't mean they arrived in India during that time.

What Is This Thing? Found It Clearing Out My Great Grandfather's Loft

What Is This Thing? Found It Clearing Out My Great Grandfather's Loft

Answer: MG-42 that can fire 1200 rpm. This is an exceptional original WWII fully functional German MG42 light machine gun. These were probably the most feared WWII German weapon on the battlefield. They were mass produced, highly effective, had a high rate of fire and were easily transported by the average German soldier and they were the corner stone of every German Infantry company. These MGs were actually a wartime improvement over the early fully machined MG34, in that they utilized new and innovative mass production techniques of stamped steel parts that were welded or riveted and combined with limited machined parts. Together they allowed the German factories to manufacture well over 400,000 of these MGs during WWII.

Just Moved To New Apartmant, Found This In The Living Room. What The F Is This?

Just Moved To New Apartmant, Found This In The Living Room. What The F Is This?

Answer: this is an antique Turkish-style bell brazier. Referred to as a mangal. Typically used by nomadic peoples of the Middle East for heating and some cooking, since you cannot have a hearth in a tent. Instead, you burn charcoal in a specially designed brazier, which contains the fire and radiates the heat. This one is compact and plainly decorated, with a short base to hold the fire bowl and a simple cover. This style is known as a suleymaniye brazier, for the district in Istanbul in which is was popularized. Other designs feature a taller decorative base, a tray to catch sparks, and elaborately designed covers. It may have come with a pair of tongs.

Sadly sturgeons are endangered due to them being killed for caviar. 85% of sturgeon species are at risk of extinction. By eating the caviar you are killing the breeding fish to harvest the fish eggs and because of this they can’t get their numbers up.

You can actually massage the caviar out of the fish. I've seen videos of them doing it in Russia and it looks like a bad sex act, but the fish is alive at the end of it making caviar sustainable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1t0t4Atbe0

They are ancient fish and what Foxxy said is true. Like the giant catfish in Asia, the Nile perch and N American paddlefish, the giant fish you see in the old photos of incredibly huge fish are becoming less and less. Some species are doing better, but the truth is, the days of these incredible beings are numbered.

A Local Bar Found This Giant Wheel Beneath The Floor While Renovating. Any Idea What It Is/Was? The Space Was Formerly A Garage

Answer: turntable for rail cars. They would bring in the cars and rotate the wheel until it lined up with a short section of track. Then they would move it to there and work on it while being able to move additional cars to other “spoke” rails to be worked on.

Apparently such devices were also used to rotate vehicles through narrow corners, before motor vehicles became commonplace and horse carriages/ carts were still the main means of transport. TBH, that turntable looks too small to be for rail cars..

For rail cars? Only if the area was once part of a railroad operation. Since it was once a garage, it's more likely it was used for cars. Seen these used ion auto related environs... garages, dealerships, etc.

Not rail cars. These were covered with a round cover of wood, and were built for motor vehicles. You drove in, it could be turned around so you didn't need to back out. The house across the street from mine was built in the 1920s for a doctor and this was so he could rush out for emergencies. In a garage, you might make a quarter turn of this platform and drive over into the lot or building for repairs.

Doesn't have to have been for rail cars. Most likely had a wooden cover, and it was so you could drive a car in, and turn it so you wouldn't have to back the car out. The house across the street from us that was built for a doctor in 1926 or so has this.

Actually, this was probably for automobiles, not trains. Very old cars didn't have a reverse gear, so some garages had these turntables used to turn the cars around so they could get back out of the garage.

First one I'm not so sure is correct. I think it's a turntable for automobiles. The older cars had a wide turn circle, so this device was used to help turn tight corners. Also it says in the description the space was used as a garage.

I'm not entirely convinced that's what this is. Others answered that it's one of those ball towel holders, but those don't pivot open. The OP said this appeared to be designed to pivot open. Neither answer makes sense.

Ok since I didn't know what a thrombolite was, I looked it up and basically it's a colony of a type of photosynthetic bacteria called cyanobacteria (bacteria that pretty much started photosynthesis and oxygen I think). They basically collect sediment bits and cement this layered structure together in shallow water and there are still some around today. Thrombolites are different from stromatolites because they have a more honeycomb shape vs the stromatolites flat layered shape. Please correct me if I'm wrong, since I just looked it up I'm still not super clear, but there's a good video called "What are Thrombolites | Lake Clifton" on YouTube too.

Found At An Estate Sale, No One There Knew Anything About Its Origin. Was Thought It Was Made From Baby Teeth But Had It Inspected By A Dentist, They Are Adult Teeth. Stored In It's Own Small Leatherette Case. What Is This Thing?

Answer: It's a voodoo charm used to protect the owner from evil magic. A gris gris bag. However, the practice soon changed, and the gris-gris were thought to bring black magic upon their "victim." Slaves would often use the gris-gris against their owners and some can still be seen adorning their tombs. During this period, there were also reports of slaves cutting, drowning or otherwise manipulating the gris-gris of others in order to cause harm. Although in Haiti, gris-gris are thought to be a good amulet and are used as part of a widely practised religion.

At least this will cut down the roach population a little bit. These eggs will never get hatched.

Answer: that's 1 out of 2 rattle magnets. Used to have them in school. You throw them up in the air and they make a crazy loud rattle.

Weird Sealed Pouch Inside A Baggie Filled With Some Sort Of Gel And Some Metal Oval With Raised Lines On It. Randomly Appeared Inside Someones Backpack In New Zealand. What Is This Thing?

Answer: It's a reusable handwarmer, 'pop' the metal and the gel with begun to crystallise creating heat then simmer it in hot water to reset.

I've seen larger examples of this at a scuba diving shop. Large enough to wrap around the small of one's back, underneath a wet suit. Helps to keep one warm when diving in cold water. There are lots of similar devices on Amazon. Search for "reusable heat packs with activation disc".

Medical Devices? But For What Kind Of Surgery?

Medical Devices? But For What Kind Of Surgery?

Answer: the drills in the kit are called trephines, and sometimes the word "trephination" is used for this variation of the procedure. "Trepanning" is more of a catch-all term referring to surgery in which a portion of the skull is removed.

People still do practice trephination on themselves with Home Depot drills and such. Apparently they believe you have to "let out pressure" in the head. There is no chance you can convince me to drill a hole in my skull.

If you have head injury that cause intra-cranial (inside of skull) bleeding, then doctor should use this to puncture your skull to relieve the blood out. Usually now days doctor will use some kind of electric drill almost same like being use by carpenter.

My Dad And I Buy Foreclosed Storage Units. We Have Had This For Two Years, Taken It To Multiple Experts, Google Searches Galore, But Still Cannot Figure Out What This Is. What Is This Thing?

Answer: the spectrometer for mineral exploration. A Sharpe A-3 Magnetometer (serial No, 220), This instrument, which can be used either as a self-levelling, self-orienting dip needle or as a vertical force magnetometer was used as a vertical force magnetometer for this survey. The instrument was designed to have an accuracy of approximately plus or minus 50 gammas at levels of moderate magnetic force, but its accuracy is dependent upon the magnetic range in which it is being used. For readings of 100,000 gammas above the base control reading its accuracy would be plus or minus 1000 gammas. For a reading of 3000 gammas above the base reading, its accuracy would be expected to be within 30 gammas.

What Is This Thing That My Friend Found In The Water?

What Is This Thing That My Friend Found In The Water?

Answer: this is a figure of the Santerian Orisha Olokun. One hand holds a snake, the other a mask. They typically come off because these figures are kept in water 100% of the time. If you found this in the ocean, then this is more evidence towards that as Olokun is tied to the ocean. This was probably disposed of ritualistically and replaced with a new one.

In the wild these moths lay their eggs in birds nests. The birds fill their nests with animal furs which the larvae eat and keep them warm with their bodies. It sounds super cosy. Unfortunately your house is also warm and filled with animal fur (woollen clothes) and this can make them a terribly expensive pest.

What Are These Emergency Doors In Amsterdam Schiphol Airport? Do They Open An Exit To Another Dimension Or Something?

What Are These Emergency Doors In Amsterdam Schiphol Airport? Do They Open An Exit To Another Dimension Or Something?

Answer: AFAIR, to the left and right, there are movable/extendable walls that connect to these doors. They can "reconfigure" the space, probably to modify the extend of different security areas like Schengen/non-Schengen.

These doors have nothing to do with Schengen or Non-Schengen. In the ceiling there are firebarriers and they will close a area to contain a fire. These doors can then be used to leave that area of for emergency personel to come in that area.

Anyone Know What This Is From? My Grandmother Recently Passed And We Are Going Through Her Memories. She Stole It From Paris When She Visited, Yes Stole Lol. Believe It Was From A Game Of Some Kind

Answer: It’s a pétanque (boule) ball. It’s a game similar to Bocce ball. Players throw metal balls like this at a small wooden ball and score points by getting closer than their opponents. It’s a pretty popular game, if you live in or near a major metro area you can probably find a group that plays near you.

Mom Found This Bullet On The Beach About A Year Ago, How Old Is It And From What Type Of Gun?

Mom Found This Bullet On The Beach About A Year Ago, How Old Is It And From What Type Of Gun?

Answer: this is a pre-1980 .50 BMG bullet. You can tell because the bullet in question does not have a boat-tail heel, which was a recent development in firearms from the 1980's forward. Most likely fired from a M2 Browning Machine Gun, as these guns would most often see action in the Navy. Although the GAU-19 might be a possible contender, it wouldn't be, because the GAU-19 only fired 50cal with a boat-tail. If you look at the grooves on the bullets, it exhibits a 8 lands and grooves right handed twist, matching the original design of a browning machine gun barrel.

South Korea - I've Tried Googling "Sponges In Plastic Baskets On Sticks" - No Luck. What Is This Thing?

Answer: the object in the picture is a leftover of a hwahwan (화환). It's basically an oversized bouquet, used in some "big personal events" in Korea. "Big personal events" being weddings, funerals, opening of their own business, etc.
A group (a company, club, or even just a circle of friends) that has ties to the affected person(family members of the deceased, the bride/groom, etc) orders these hwahwan to congratulate or show their support as a group. Sometimes ordered by an individual if they can't personally come to the event.
After ordering, the hwahwan will be delivered to wherever the event's taking place at a specified time. You can often see dozens of these in a line near weddings, funerals, or newly-opened shops.

WRONG! Whoever got this from reddit pasted the wrong explanation, It's a Russian 107mm shrapnel from the "42-line field gun M1877", captured and reused by the Germans on the Western Front in WW1. And yes, the correct answer was in there as well.

    L McN

6 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Ok, so the answer didn't specify which army, nor which artillery. 107mm is close to 105 which was phrased as a guess, so they were fairly consistent there. And the dials on top are for timing, regardless of the weapon that fires it. And, this is either artillery or tank fired, in which case it is still artillery. So, how was the original answer wrong? It just was not nearly a specific as you wanted....

What Are These Yellow Things Coming Out Of This Lizard's Stomach? This Is The 6th Lizard I've Found Like This So Far This Month

What Are These Yellow Things Coming Out Of This Lizard's Stomach? This Is The 6th Lizard I've Found Like This So Far This Month

Answer: this is Sceloporus occidentalis and those look like dessicated eggs to me. S. occidentalis will lay 3-17 eggs per clutch so this is within the correct range. I'm seeing tiny lizards everywhere at the moment and July is the upper range of the laying season. It's possible/ unlikely that the lizards in your area are becoming eggbound, dying and are exploding when they decompose, but more likely you have a cat near you that enjoys killing lizards without eating them. The tail here has been severed recently (if it was an older wound you'd see a black regrown stump), which suggests that it dropped the tail to escape from a predator. Gravid lizards are heavier and will probably be easier to catch than a lizard that isn't carrying eggs.

What Is The Porpuse Of These Floors? They Have No Windows, Only This Clylindrical Thing On Them, There Are More Throughout The Building

What Is The Porpuse Of These Floors? They Have No Windows, Only This Clylindrical Thing On Them, There Are More Throughout The Building

Answer: mechanical voids to get extra height to the building. City zoning regulations have put restrictions on them. Tall buildings would typically need a plant room every 25 storeys or so (of which one may be rooftop). Because of the way planning floorspace typically works though there's no real limit until now on building more mechanical plant rooms (unlike normal floors) so more space is being put in them than necessary to help with some other issues like here they are a bit open to help reduce wind loading and also just to increase the height of the building because higher units sell for more money.

These floors in buildings also act as fire barriers. In case of fire, residents may have no way to go all the way down or to the rooftop (with the skyscrapers being so tall), so they could escape to those levels if needed.
