They served these now and then at the prison I was in.
*this comment is directed towards the soft can opener* do you mind If I ask what you were in prison for? I totally get if you don't share, I'm just curious as half my family is/was in prison for drug related things. I would like to know more about the prison system. Please share your story if you feel comfortable :)

Did anyone else only have these when you went to see a show at a theatre?
Yup! These still serve them at some cinemas and theatres in the UK. The little wooden spoon makes me think of tongue depressor.
Load More Replies...I hated having to wait for the ice cream to melt a bit so I wouldn't break my wooden spoon
Film... you whippersnappers with your VHS...harumph.
Load More Replies...Projectors only back in my day...not long after dinosaurs stopped roaming freely
So I'm probably alone here, but I hated it. It was always some weird education show and it was back before anyone even pretended that accessibility was a thing, so there's deaf me in the classroom sitting through some confusing and frustrating who knows what, praying there weren't going to be questions afterwards, as the only concession ever made to my inability to hear it was I was allowed to come to the front... where the deafness would go away, I assume?
I remember this with a VHS player, and sometimes the slide projector...
"If I'm old enough". You youngsters with your modern tech. We had 16mm film reels and before that even some of those slide stick things where you play the record and when you hear the bong you push the stick sideways to line up the next slide. Also - shout out to those who sniffed the freshly mimeographed handouts.
Back in my day, we didn’t have a vcr and tv…back in the 70’s and 80’s we had a film projector and the teacher always had to fight with it for 20 minutes to get it to work…then pull down the projector screen if he was tall enough to reach it. We watched films that were from the 50’s and 60’s. “Here we see the cell dividing. This is called mitosis”…..most boring films ever in science class ! lol
I confirm that. Both me and my sister have done this. Instinctively, it seems, because our parents didn’t tell us how to do it
Load More Replies...i had something similar, we connected those textas with the clipon to the next one caps. and we made little pistols
Yeah, me and my friend used to do this all the time in elementary. We would make such messes and everybody would compete to see who could make and successfully hold the longest sword. Good times
Yup. Immediate detention if we did this. Not that I ever did. Cough. Cough.
I had forgotten all about these! Amazing what we could turn into a toy back in the day.
does anyone remember the scented markers ? am i the only one that loves smelled the black licorice marker ??? yummm.
Bored Panda got in touch with the people who run the "Nostalgia From Your Childhood" account to get their insights into nostalgia and what draws people to it. First, we wanted to know what prompted the creation of the group. "I wouldn't consider myself someone who is necessarily "stuck in the past", but I love all things nostalgia. Looking at old photos from my childhood, being reminded of all cartoons I used to watch, or snacks I used to eat after school."
"I figured it would be fun to create a nostalgia-themed Twitter account to reminisce and connect with others who grew up experiencing similar things. Additionally, it allows me to almost create a place where I can preserve collective memories and create a virtual haven where people can come together and spark conversations about their cherished memories as a child."
i saw a wonderful video where someone used the top left image of a field, and turned all of their apps and folders into pictures of grazing cows!
Would love to see that if you have a limo! Edit: *a link not a limo, although a limo would be cool too*
Load More Replies...For some reason, the green hill background made me feel anxious. I don't know why.
I always used the island one. That is until I found out about online themes you could download that would change the wallpaper, cursor and sound effects. I loved that. I always picked a fantasy type theme. It annoyed my poor dad so much. Although now that I think about it that might have been Windows 98 not XP.
The little island was my favorite. Spent a good five, ten minutes looking at it and relaxing before I actually got back to work.
Woah, that's some innovation. We were just putting the glue all over our hands.
Load More Replies...It's always a rush if ur doing that, not paying attention and moving quickly, then hit one of those little bumps that's dripped in the groove from paint or whatever and it bends or breaks a bit of your nail. Had that happen so many times and I will still run my fingers through them lol
Have you tried brushing the finger the other way? With your arm behind you, and the top of your fingernail brushing
Load More Replies...All the walls in my elementary school were brick. I did this all the time, until I scraped my whole arm, and... I kept doing it
Both buildings were meant to last a very long time, while being abused by those within their walls, lol.
Load More Replies...Had this in the bedroom of my first apartment back in 2010. 10/10 would not recommend as an interior building material. I could run my heater all day in winter and still go to bed and feel the cold radiating off that wall all night.
Thats not because of the interior wall. Thats because there was no insulation between the outer and inner wall

We also wanted to hear their insights into why the content was so popular. "Nostalgia content is popular because it's like a time machine that takes you back to cherished memories and simpler times. It's relatable, and comforting, and sparks a sense of belonging as you connect with others who shared similar experiences."
"I think nostalgia also has a powerful emotional impact on people. Whether you're looking at old childhood TV shows, classic games, or throwback foods, it often evokes positive feelings such as happiness, comfort, and joy as you reminisce about pleasant memories from the past. In a world filled with constant information overload and stress, nostalgia simply offers a retreat to simpler, happier times. There's also nothing like the feeling of seeing a photo or video of something from your childhood that you haven't thought of in over 15 years."
My cats did that with my old computer. I swear one of them did it on purpose since she'd stare me down while doing it.
Load More Replies...this was the thing that had me suspicious of every video anyone wanted me to watch for YEARS.
Or that email one you could send that would suddenly have a screaming face appear on the screen the second they opened it? Similar to being rickrolled now, only with a jump scare.
My dad pranked my sister and me with that video but he never did something like the screaming face prank! My sister did prank me years later with that one, though!
Load More Replies...Please, God, no, I've only just started sleeping properly at night again!
OMG. I was watching this not knowing what it was. I wasn't scared, but my poor kid that was innocently watching over my shoulder was horrified and trying to rip away the dry wall in order to get away. This doesn't hold good memories.
You’re lucky! The abacus I learned on had NO icons.

The origins of the word “nostalgia” are surprisingly violent. Likely coined in the 17th century by Johannes Hofer, it was used to describe the “Swiss Illness” which referred to the homesickness felt by Swiss mercenaries traveling and fighting around Europe. Reportedly, not being around Alpine pastures and mountains caused the soldiers to develop fevers, faint, and even just drop dead.
While this explanation is not exactly verifiable, as most of us aren’t falling dead weeks after going off to college, scientists at the time did try to figure out what was causing this emotion. They searched, improbably, for a bone responsible for nostalgia, and, for example, US Civil War soldiers could be diagnosed with it after spending time away from home.
They still sell these. We got one for my nephew a few years ago; he's only 5
If I ever have my own house with a stupid amount of money, I want this as my rug.
Granny candies. Somehow the old people always had a bowl of them out when we visited.
We still have these.. are they not safe to eat?!?! Maybe that's why I haven't been feeling myself...
Load More Replies...Do people buy these, or do they just appear inside the sweets bowl one day?
They came in the Hickory Farms box with the sausages at Christmas time.
YES! I always went for these first! Then I found them in stores in bags. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The middle part is the best. 😍
Load More Replies...Freaking hate these. Never saw them in stores and yet old people still had howls of them.

It's a bass port. Of course those speakers didn't remotely produce that much, but you can see it in subwoofers.
Load More Replies...In some ways, the popularity of nostalgia can, unfortunately, be seen as a result of increasingly uncertain times. Some studies suggest that the more people report feeling uncertain about things or having disruptions in their lives, the more nostalgic they feel about the past. It’s no surprise that in many cases, this sort of content gets ideas of “yearning for a simpler time” attached to it.
And they somehow left a slight stinging sensation in the throat.
Load More Replies...We still buy these. Have them now for summer! Do not have an extra freezer in garage with them stockpiled though. Thats on another level.
My parents buy these all the time! Literally the best!

I always did either the standard EQ bars, like the ones from 90s hi-fi sets; or the EQ wave ring similar to the picture only with a flat black background
Staring at that for hours instead of doing my homework.
This mechanism isn’t random, our brains do try to soothe and self-comfort when we feel under duress. While nostalgia by itself is triggered by generally negative feelings, it does have the ability to improve our mood. Among other effects, it reminds us that at a time, at least from our current point of view, times were better. Ever the optimists, as humans this makes us feel like times could get better again.
Me too! Even looking at the picture gives me low-key anxiety!
Load More Replies...God I hated that f*****g thing! I'm still on anxiety meds from it....
My school library used to have one of these that you could "borrow" for the night (along with a Little Professor Calculator) and it was always booked out.
I remember playing this multiple times with one of my grandsons.
Load More Replies...Fun game: You take all the yellow pieces out, push down the blue base. A clock starts ticking & you are supposed to match the pieces to the holes by shape *BEFORE* the time runs out, the blue base pops up & all the yellow pieces go for a fly. Fun & anxiety-inducing indeed.
Load More Replies...This! This thing scared the sh*t out of me and my sister back in the day! 😅
Yeah but don't forget that every foam item in here always had a bite taken out of it for some reason
I remember this vividly, plus those giant parachutes! Good times
All of this still exists in elementary health and physical education,
Yes, none of this is nostalgia if it's still in use all over the world!
Load More Replies...Nah i thought you had a picture of my old school for a second. where are the big weird red blue and yellow frisbees that they never let us use?
Yep… not sure why this is nostalgia. Still very much in use in schools and nurseries everywhere.
Load More Replies...I think of this more as a now thing. Back when I was at high school, art class had so little respect we were unlikly to be given paints as it was thought a waste. First time I saw these racks, I was over 40 and helping out an art class. I was trying to spread art across the back tables not realising what the racks were for.
Chess picture, for me. It made me appear brainy lol.
i was the guitar and then the butterfly, then i was goofy and picked duck
I still recall one of the toys I bought using the money my grandma sent me for Christmas when I was six.
Still sad about these closing. Hours spent in with toddler playing. Moms have Target kids had Toys R Us.
I don't wanna grow up, I'm a toys R us kid, there's a million things at toys R us that I can play with. From bikes and trains to video games. It's the biggest toy store there is! I don't wanna grow up, because if I did, I wouldn't be a toys R us kid!
I try to skip commercials but have noted many don't even mention the product names these days.

I wahsn´t allowed one!!!!! Need to ask my mom why... (am 37 now, could just get fone but my actual dog is jealous)
Maybe she thought they were distracting? I remember some schools banning them because of kids using them in class (so they wouldn't die, because they died so easily)

I had one when I was younger, after it died I reset it and I have no idea what happened but I didn't get an animal pet I got some sort of weird balloon ghost looking thing. And no it wasn't just the ghost that would be shown after your tomagachi pet died, it was alive and could be cared for
I still have mine from 1961. Stopped getting them when they dumbed them down.
Yes, as a kid I loved reading the older ones, with all the hard facts about the real world. Then it became garbage like "the record for the most marshmallows eaten while juggling balls and riding backwards"
Load More Replies...This was once voted the most stolen book from public libraries.
I wish I still had mine. I loved reading through it! Even better when it had lots of pictures to go with the feat.
They still make these, they just don't have weird holographic covers anymore.
Satan what? You don't read?? Is it acceptable to buy necronomicon at the book fair? Wait..🥺🤣

Load More Replies...For everyone else that hasn't eaten there since they were yellow, the preferred colour now seems to be red. Hmmm, exactly the same as McDonalds, how does that make you memorable? Wendys-649...c29042.jpg
I have one better: 90s McDonald's french fries. Remember the incredible flavour of 100% saturated fat that was so bad, and so good
Buffalo Wild Wings still cooks fries in tallow, I believe ..... they are heavenly
Load More Replies...Seriously, when did that change... guess it's been a while since I ate there.
But if they wanted to get paid for the week they had to put in for unemployment. At least that is what I had to do when I was a lunch lady. Same for summer vacation and winter break.
Load More Replies...Thanks for showing me stuff from my children's childhood. I'm apparently too old for half of these things, and I'm only 50!
this may have been when lunch ladies actually made lunches. i know that when my grandkids were in school that it had become a nuke and serve process with everything being premade. in high school a once retired but now lunch lady had been a pastry chef. guess she just wanted to get back into a kitchen so when she was hired we suddenly had pastries offered for sale between morning breaks. her damn cinnamon twists were to die for so if you didn't hustle after second period you lost out. shame our kids/grandkids will not know what a cooked lunch is.
American schools provide lunches. Some can receive reduced cost or free. Anyone is welcome to choose to take a home packed lunch instead. During summer break most districts still offer to those in need of breakfast and or lunch.
Load More Replies...Wow! It has dessert and actually vegetables haven't seen a school menu with those in my lifetime sadly
Try the prison menu. Wednesday was hamburger day. Thursday was chicken leg quarters. Saturday and Sunday lunch was "brunch" that was just breakfast. Once a month was pizza (one slice). Hot dog night, we occasionally got two.
“Variety of milk”? Kids these days! When I was a kid, there was only one kind of milk. (Well, I grew up on a dairy farm so there were two kinds: cold from the fridge and warm from the udder, straight into our mouths, as squirted by my dad.) (Wowie; has there ever been a more repellent sentence?)
Y'alls schools gave you lunch? I didn't get a cafeteria until high school
Yo quiero Taco Bell !… In the future all restaurants were supposed to be Taco Bell according to Judge Dredd lol
"Here, Lizard, Lizard, Lizard..." *Godzilla roars in the distance* "I'm gonna need a bigger box..." My absolute FAVORITE of the old Taco Bell Chihuahua commercials...
I'm so old that my first computer didn't have a start button because that hadn't been invented yet. Any other Windows 3.1 babies with me?
Did no one have a Mac? (Or an Apple ][? Did everyone have a polymer clay or compatible?)
I'm only in my 30s but this makes me feel old... I was nowhere close to being a child when these came out!
I remember that those were only brought out for indoor recess, but I remember the ONE time that I managed to get ALL of them and my teacher actually taking a picture of me with my "castle", complete with a paper portcullis and a Duplo moat...
We actually made some of these in my class they're just shoe boxes wrapped in that brick like pattern
Yeah, these were very important for making castle forts, but there were never enough
They didn't HAVE these when I was a kid, or even a teenager! You were the bee's knees and cat's meow if you had a Walkman (cassette), and the absolute SHIZNIT if you had a Discman (CD)!
And yet, the walk man worked better because the disc man would skip with too much movement
Load More Replies...I still have mine! Not sure if they work or not, but I still have them! :P
Isn't it weird that at some point, every single one of those was somebody's pride and joy?
Never had one. I have had every iteration of the Walkman, and a Minidisc player. I still use Walkman. Much better than an iPod.
I had a Zune. That thing was awesome. It probably still works if I can locate it
Kids today will never know what the blue one tasted like BTW that's a new one, the blue one was the van not scooby
Load More Replies...the blue ones were the best. me and my brother would share one pack and we would fight over who got the blue one.
those were good - didn't they have like a cool season where you had to find a white one ?
I still see machines with $1 cans in NYC, though back then it was 50-75 cents

Remember when rice krispies went grunge? Then i knew it was the end.
Load More Replies...The best thing I ever learned was the maintenance code for these machines; you could have it dispense free drinks, change the prices, or even have the machine give you money. I never had it give me money, but I did change a couple of the machines at the mall in my city for cheaper/free drinks a couple times.
Seniors were in charge of the one on our floor, all proceeds went to senior class trip. I had a friend who was the machine refill guy. Always got my sodas for free. It was a great time to be alive.

You have unlocked a core memory, kind sir. Excuse while I binge all the episodes currently available on YouTube
I literally grew up in wonderpets. I remember my dad telling me that one of my relatives helped make the show.
Wonder pets wonder pets were on our way to save a baby animal and save the day were not to big and were not to small but if we work together we’ve got the right stuff yaaaayy wonder pets yaaaayyy

I was in a production of Matilda the Musical and in one scene (when I grow up), I got to scooter across the stage on one of those with a cape. It was so much fun. :D Then for the bows all of the cast came onstage on scooters (not all at once but in one song), and it was such a pain because we had to organize and distribute scooters to 60 kids, half of which were under 11. I definitely hit my shins a few times.
Yay another theater kid :D Matilda sounds like a very fun musical to be in

Bionicle was super popular when I was in elementary school and towards the second year of middle school!
We had a Christmas gift exchange in like 3rd grade where everyone had to bring in a present and we each got to pick one. I was gonna grab the one my friend brought in, but then decided against it, for whatever reason, so I ended up getting a different gift. I got a monster truck (admittedly pretty cool) but the kid right after me got the one I ended up turning down, and it was three Bionicles! 3 of them! Which iirc was significantly past the $10 limit, those things were like $6-8 at least. I'm still salty about it to this day!
My dentist’s office had a Mario game and Tony Hawk Pro Skater game. Passing the time playing those while I was waiting to get my appointments as a teenager was a blessing indeed!
The ones in kmart & walmart & the dentist office that didn't work though lol
Kingdom hearts birth by sleep. Still have my psp but the battery casing crumbled. If you have one check immediately.
I modded my psp after the end of support in the us. It was my retro games handheld for years. I'm really sad Sony decided to not support the vita and it would have really been awesome if it got some love. It replaced my psp for my emulator machine.
Crisis Core. Beat the game right before bed, watched the final cutscene right before school the next morning, was inconsolable the whole day.

I'm missing the kids' corner they used to have in supermarkets and other places kids would get bored in. They usually had a tv showing an old Disney movie, or a touchscreen with a game to play which never worked.
It’s weird to see people nostalgic for things that were popular when I was in my 30s.
