Try to imagine the future a year from now. Barring some world-shattering Apocalypse of two (thank you, we’ve had enough!), it’s not all that hard to do. Now think of what life will be like in 5 years. Then 10. And finally, 50. Half a century from now, the world, society, norms, and technology may have changed very drastically. So much so that we’ll be nostalgic for a lot of things that we take for granted right now.

It’s tough to know what exactly you might miss in the future, but it's great for feeling grateful for what we have now. Prompted by redditor u/klausbrusselssprouts, the folks over at r/AskReddit shared some great insights and opinions about the things that people might be nostalgic for, 50 years from now. Spoiler warning: people's outlooks about the future are pretty grim. If nothing else, it’s a reminder of just how great life is right now, despite its challenges and imperfections.

Read on for a perspective on the present through the lens of the future, and don’t forget to upvote the posts you agree with, Pandas. We’d also love to hear your own thoughts about what you think many of us will feel a deep sense of longing for in the decades to come, so be sure to drop by the comments to share your thoughts.

Bored Panda reached out to the friendly author of the viral thread, u/klausbrusselssprouts, and he was kind enough to answer our questions in detail. Klaus shared that he has a background in history and social science, and has been a high school teacher in Denmark for the past 10 years. He said that the inspiration for the r/AskReddit post actually came from an exercise he often does in his own history classes. Read on for our full interview with Klaus.

Used to own every Disney movie on VHS as a kid. Started having compatibility issues and didn't want to spend a fortune on DVDs that are no longer compatible with my setup either. So now I pay monthly for access to what took up a small space in my closet for free as a child.

I only do free streaming. I planned on subscribing to Hulu or Netflix or something, but I can't keep up with the free stuff. I'm a shut-in, and there's too much for me to watch.

What free streaming do you mean? If legal, then I don’t know how you get to watch movies, series etc without paying?

This is why I do not subscribe to "channels." You are paying three to four times for the same thing. You have tv which you watch and have commercials, that the first payment, then you have cable which you pay for, that's the second, then you have "special payments" for shows on their "special cable networks" and then you have subscription. Screw it, we don't watch tv anymore. I read.

I'm 58, and I remember when Cable became a thing. That's a subscription Everybody Loved from the word, go! We only had about 7 channels without it. After school shows, and Saturday morning cartoons. But, did you know that cable is now a SCAM? Everyone that has a TV made after 2012, can get cable without paying a dime. I can get over 100 channels for free! Unhook the cable from the cable box, hook it into the back of your tv. Then, go to input, set your TV on antenna, and with the remote that comes with your TV, you can get almost every channel you pay out the as$ for. Exception of HBO, Stars, and Cinemax. We have a Roku for Netflix, and other movie channels, cost $25 a month. WiFi $89 a month. Suddenlink, was charging us $279 a month for everything we get now for free.

You can turn the tides for media stuff by actually buying a physical copy. Netflix is costing as much as a new movie for one month anymore, as are other subscription places. Just get a new movie once a month. Sure they have a few shows you might wanna watch, but that's gonna be the only way to make corporations understand we're sick of this horseshit.

The Netflix giveth and the Netflix taketh away. This is why I record everything onto a hard drive and archive the REALLY important stuff onto a BD-R. People used to think I was old-fashioned for still burning discs but look who's laughing now.

"In history, students are always asked to reflect on other people's thoughts, ideas, and actions in the past as a way to understand the developments in the past societies. I also want to make the students aware that they themselves are a part of history. In class, I ask the question, 'What from [the current year] should be put in a museum in 50 years?' With this question, the students are forced to reflect on themselves, and the present as a historical period. They will identify what's unique about the 2020s as opposed to the 2000s for instance. This is my way of doing a Reddit version of that question. So in that way, there's a history lesson going on, on Reddit with that post," Klaus told Bored Panda.

I can see digital actors and actresses for all movies in the not so distant future. The tech is pretty good right now, although still detectable as not real. But fast forward 20-30 years and I'm betting it is so good that movie studios will just quit paying people and use their copyrighted creations in movies and we, the general public, won't be able to tell the difference. Also using sets and stunts in movies will be a quaint throwback kind of like stop motion movies are now.

Klaus told Bored Panda that he didn't even consider how popular the post might be. He said that it's something he posted "more or less randomly." However, the post clicked with a ton of people and the thread went viral.

"After a few hours when I checked Reddit again, I found out it had exploded—I didn't see that coming. I think it gained so much popularity because it basically is a question about people themselves and their/our own time. It's a very present question and not something very abstract. You can simply sit at your desk or in your room and just look around and find stuff that represents the 2020s," he explained why the question resonated so much with so many redditors.

He shared that a couple of weeks ago, he was at a history museum where they had an exhibition on classrooms. There, he found a glimpse into his youth. "I was looking at what my own classroom looked like in the '90s. It was in a way shocking that I could be examined, just like the 1890s or 1790s are being examined. So in that way, I think this idea of the current individuals and time being a subject of future museums is very fascinating," he said.

I've written this before - for the vast majority of people, privacy only started recently. Families shared the same room, different families shared the same apartment, often without real doors, people shared beds at hotels and hostels, etc. Even today, the majority of people in the world do not have anything close to what White Westerners consider "privacy". Only in the USA is it "normal" for th emajority of people to live in single family homes even now.

Predicting what the future will look like is a very tough challenge. One strategy that you could rely on involves looking at the investment space and seeing what technologies certain companies pump money into developing. That way, you can more or less gauge what our tech may look like a few years from now. But all things considered, anyone talking about the future with certainty is probably lying or trying to sell you something. Futurology is all guesswork, even if some of it is done very diligently and scientifically.

Klaus, the author of the post, told Bored Panda that, as a historian, he's not really into trying to predict the future. "History has shown us time and time again how things can unfold in completely unexpected directions. Take for instance the movie series 'Back to the Future.' I've read interviews, where the scriptwriters and actors, to some extent, back in the mid-1980s actually believed that we would have flying cars in 2015," he noted that our hopes for the future don't always come true.

Meanwhile, the historian shared his thoughts about what the people of the future might be nostalgic about. "I think social media and smartphones are very defining for the 2010s and 2020s. It's likely that in the 2070s those things are long gone and replaced by something much more advanced. Though it can be hard to imagine what that would be," he mused.

Here is somebody who either has selective memory, is a man who has never been the subject of a bullying campaign, or is too young to have known the internet during its early days. As for a world without social media", based on this person's Reddit account, they have never lived in one in their conscious memory. They are recent graduates, so they were born around 1998-2000. Friendster started in 2002, MySpace and 4chan in 2003, Facebook in 2004, Twitter in 2006, and Tumblr in 2007, all before this person finished 2nd grade. Instagram started in 2010, when he was, maybe, in middle school. So he is "nostalgic" for a world that he imagines existed, not anything that he remembers.

I miss when I was young, and we would ride our bikes to all of our friends homes to get them to come out. Walking to the nearest convenience store to turn in our bottles to fill up on Penny Candy, and still have enough left over for each of us to have a bottle of pop. Living in Florida, we had orange trees in our yards. Making orange juice to sell to make extra money. People Spreading rumors without the internet, and listening to our moms, sitting around and gossiping. We loved listening in on them!

"With the current troubles that we see around the world with climate change that is on the verge of getting out of control, escalating tensions between NATO countries and Russia, China, and North Korea, just to name a few, I imagine that we are looking into a less secure period in world history," Klaus said that he doesn't see an overly peaceful future in the works. The sense of peace and stability that we've had for several decades is going away.

"Since the Cold War ended in 1991, we have to realize that we've been extremely secure. More secure than ever before. I think we may realize that this sense of security will be a parenthesis in world history, and it'll be something that people could be nostalgic about."

Klaus told us that he hopes that questions like his will make people reflect on themselves and the time period when they live. "With this question, it's more about identifying objective truths about ourselves in the 2020s. There are many things that people have mentioned in the post, that almost all can agree will be something to be nostalgic about. I think this is the true power of Reddit—that positive vibe you generally find. This makes Reddit stand out to many other social media where I see a much more toxic community, for instance, Facebook and YouTube."

Nostalgia is a very powerful thing. It can remind us of the good old days and help us power through many tough situations in the present. However, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword because we can get lost in it: we might even ignore our current lives, letting them go down in quality. Besides, it’s often difficult to recognize the fact that we’re living in the best of days when we don’t know what the future will bring. There are certain things that we know for a fact we should focus on: our health, our loved ones, our passion projects, and our shift toward financial independence.

Financial expert Sam Dogen, the author of ‘Buy This, Not That,’ recently explained to Bored Panda that, as time goes by, we should give greater and greater priority to our health.

"Health is absolutely the main thing that will decline and hurt the quality of your life if you don’t focus on it. Therefore, you have to be dedicated to eating properly and exercising regularly, especially over the age of 30," he told Bored Panda.

Sometimes I think it would not be that bad. People can get very mean and carried away if they think no one knows it‘s them. (The kkk come to mind here). If everyone knew who everyone was, then there would not be half so much cyber bullying going on. And this is exactly the reason why internet will never be *not* anonymous. If EVERYONE stopped acting like this is something we have to just deal with and we have no say, then you're part of the problem. Nah, we are already there. Old(er) fart mode engaged on this one... My first car was made the year after my birth. 1977 Olds Cutless. It was given to me because it had a rod knocking you could hear half a mile away. With a little help, I pulled the knocker, refurbished a replacement and installed, tuned and tweaked it till it ran like a sewing machine. No special tools or skills. I wouldn't dare try that on anything made after 2005. Modern vehicles are a wonder of electronic controls and efficiency. Its awesome that I can plug in a code reader and get pretty close diagnosis of what's wrong with an engine. But remedying that problem is only for the brave.

"You cannot just wing it like you did as a teenager or a healthy 20-something years old eating pizza all day. Your waistline will expand and you’ll find more and more health issues pop up as you get older,” the financial expert said. At the same time, as you grow older, your perspective shifts and you start seeing some advantages compared to when you were younger.

"Your confidence will naturally grow as you get older and gain more wisdom. As a result, you will feel less insecure, less shy, and have more courage to live the life that you want. Remember, your financial independence number is not ready if you don’t have the courage to change a suboptimal situation!" he said.

"Further, as you build more wealth and grow your income, your fear of running out of money also declines. As a result, you can take more risks and not worry as much about what your friends, colleagues, and bosses think. The best benefit of being financially independent is to be able to speak your mind when you see something wrong. Also, I spend a lot more time being a creator, without fearing ridicule. It is so freeing!"

Cars we drive ourselves are vastly overrated and you can look at any crash statistics to learn this, what we need is reliable public transport and cities designed for walking not sprawl. Get rid of the fossil fuels to stop altering the weather and our over reliance on plastics, and carefree use of fresh water should've never been a thing in the first place. As for kids respecting their elders, that is a two way road. Physical media is still available it just costs more, it's also very easy to record digital media. Why would keyboards and mice disappear? No one misses "yeet" now.

Lab created meat will be much more humane, and as long as it tastes, looks, and cooks like the real deal, who cares? Also, I have a theory that not only are we wasting water, but there's too many idiots to support the amount of water we need. Stop having kids, and I bet it would correct itself. (How many humans on this planet and how much water we carry within ourselves alone should show this.)

Really don't like the "lab grown meat" and "respecting elders" respect is mutual, if you don't deserve it don't get it, also "don't want lab grown meat" as a bad thing and "2.5 million species of life" as good doesn't work well in the same sentence

We can’t be sure what the future will bring (though things do tend to get better over time, on average), so it’s best to be prepared for some unfortunate eventualities. Having a small financial safety net can help as you move forward.

“Things may seem more difficult now as the stock market declines and layoffs increase. However, know that over the long term, economic progress is always up and to the right. Things will inevitably rebound and get better. Your goal is to survive through the downturn so that when the upturn inevitably comes, you will benefit," financial expert Sam said.

"This means having 6-12 months' worth of living expenses to hold you over, just in case you lose your job and lose alternative income sources. The average bear market lasts about 12 months. Then, brighter days inevitably appear," he told Bored Panda.

"In a capitalistic society, people are always looking to find ways to make things better, cheaper, and faster. As a result, there will be continuous innovation in the name of profits. The key is to be thankful for what we already have and to appreciate how far we’ve come over the past 10, 20, 30, and 100 years! Don’t take the good things in our life for granted."

One of the ways to balance out our feelings of nostalgia for the past is to be more grateful for what we have in the present. You can start very simple, for instance, by focusing on the abundant things that you probably have right now: enough food to eat each day, a job that gives you enough financial stability to have a roof over your head. That’s not to mention the people in your life who love you, care for you, and support you.

Gratitude also springs from recognizing the fact that not everyone is as fortunate as you, and that you have accomplished quite a lot of things (even if others might have done more). Keeping a gratitude journal or making a gratitude list can help you sort your thoughts. It’s also not a bad idea to take some time to think of all the things you’re grateful for before going to bed or after waking up. It’s perfectly fine to miss the Good Old Days(™)... so long as you don’t forget to enjoy the present.

Human made art and music without the use of AI. Or even just knowing it was made without the use of AI tools like DALL-E 2 or similar. Kind of like how before autotune you knew for certain a singer could sing that way.

I hate this gatekeeping. Its like people complaining about Cezanne's use of watercolors because it was too easy or photography not being artistic because you didn't use a brush. Its another tool to let people express their artistic vision. How is it ok for artist 1 to collect 30 books on Van Gogh and use that to inspire them to paint their dog in the same style but its not ok for artist 2 to use the same 30 books but use the computer to also paint their dog in the same style? Art is an expression of an idea and I willingly embrace anything that lets people get it out of their head. Some people paint and make a living. Some switch to photography because their hands can't express what they see to pay the bills. If someone wants to use a computer to make their art, I'll pay the same money to all 3 if I like it.

This is unlikely, the amount of water on earth has not changed appreciably in millions of years. I think we will actually be able to make more use of the water on earth in the future as improvements in technology and the use of more renewable energy sources will mean that the recycling and desalination and resalination of water becomes more efficient and cost effective. The problem is not really with a lack of water on earth but in making it drinkable and transporting it to where it is needed.

We desperately need to get away from the self-driving car and individual ownership of cars. On average, a car is sitting unused and idle 91% of the day. I imagine a world where you log into an app and an electric self driving car shows up from a local depot within 5 minutes and delivers you to your destination. Its faster to get there than now because all the cars are also self driven following set paths so things like idiots cutting you off and need to maintain a 2 second following distance in case someone slams on their brakes are no longer a concern.Need a different size? Dial it up. Why waste an 8 seat SUV when you only need it 1 day a week when its your turn to pick up the neighborhood kids after school?

Self-driving cars won't accelerate and close the gap when you hit your turn indicator, won't blow though stop signs or red lights, tailgate or speed up to change lanes in front of you just to slam on their brakes. Self-driving cars won't "road rage." I use to love driving, going for a nice drive on the weekends, but people have ruined it. I'm for self-driving cars.

Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day, when I realized too late that the rugs I ordered weren't the size I visualized. For a minute, I missed going to a brick and mortar store, where I could physically see and touch what I was buying, before I purchased it. Then I thought, naw, I just should've measured before I ordered. Now if someone like me, who is old enough to remember when most people thought personal computers would never be a thing in their lifetime, prefers to order literally everything online, I strongly expect they'll be gone in 50 years.

Most guys will leave the fob in the truck during work so as not to damage it. I had to move one once. Spent 5 or so minutes looking for the non-existant key...felt old after that.

Snow isn't going to disappear globally. Climate change has twice caused bomb cyclones to dump on my house. These are caused by warm air popping the bubble around the Arctic circle so a huge mass of cold, wet air slams south and dumps ridiculous amounts of moisture. We got 73 inches of snow in 3 days. We also had 90 MPH winds with gusts to 110 mph. Converting snow to rain, it was the same amount of moisture as New Orleans for hurricane Katrina.

used to get 3 feet of snow when I was little now we get little to none. Used to love snow, not so much now so it's fine except less snow = less water.

Here in West Virginia, we used to get a lot of snow in the winter. In the last 7 years, we don't get much at all. One, maybe two good snows over 3 inches deep. No Sense in going out to play in 3 inches of snow. When I make a snowball, dirt and rocks always gets mixed in. Yes, it's changing.

Disappointed that no-one has mentioned correct spelling, grammar and the use of the apostrophe. In fact - words, it will all be abbreviations and TLA by then.

I really miss commas when I read novels now. It's so ambiguous without enough of them.

Freedom is already gone for most of the developed world; you cannot survive without interacting with various governmental and commercial systems. All we can do is minimize, avoid or circumvent that interaction as much as possible. I don't consider it particularly sane, but it's what we as a species have created.

No kidding. Also recycled cartoon movies. About pretty sick of those. Also all these + channels that charge you for classic movies Looking at you Disney in particular. We have to pay for classic Paramount movies from the freaking 40's now??

Said like the non superhero/comic book movie is a dying breed. It's not. At all. There are still tons of those produced each year in many different countries. Sure the superhero/comic book movies are common, but they're not leading to a lack of non superhero/comic book movies
