I got married in a ceremony but never got -legally- married because we need my husband's disability benefits to get by and they would be reduced if my income was a factor.
Someone I worked with had a daughter with a disability and her and husband got divorced so that she could get more benefits for her daughter but they stayed a couple.

My brother put off marrying his wife for several years because she had cancer and if they got married, it would be a pre-existing condition on his insurance and her treatment would no longer be covered.
I know a person who has a brain tumor and took federal disability to basically pay off his student loans while his tumor is in remission. He hopes to live long enough to get another job where he can afford his medical bills eventually.
My husband and I purposely got jobs that were contract work/fee-for-service/self employed so that we would qualify for medical assistance since we did not work for companies that had the employee options for health insurance. So basically, I get 90% better coverage if I don't work. That is messed up.

My husband has a friend that did just that. When she was diagnosed with cancer they divorced but stayed together. That way she could get medicaid and they would lose the house; they made sure he got the house in the divorce.
I'm a recently disabled newly wed. Might not have gotten legally married if I knew what was going to happen.
My partner and I have decided not to get married for that very reason. The marriage penalty is real.

As someone born and raised in the USA, this makes my heart hurt. We could be and do SO MUCH better if we'd just be willing to admit that: 1. Some of our systems are broken 2. Some of our systems were designed to elevate some and oppress others 3. Maybe a bunch of guys from 250 years ago who believed that it was ok to own people and would be mystified by a light switch MIGHT not have had all the answers for how things should be operating in 2023 4. Capitalism isn't the answer for everything 5. Any group's religious beliefs should NOT be the basis for laws and policies 6. Voters should be able to pick their elected officials. Elected officials should not be able to pick their voters. (End Gerrymandering) 7. Money isn't speech and corporations aren't people. 8. Loving your country means admitting its faults, working to correct them, and making it live up to its ideals; not just waving a flag or standing when a song is played.

How horrific. When Americans say how great their country is I just shake my head. They're so anti socialist and yet any of these things could happen to anyone in the blink of an eye. Thank god we have a health and social service to fall back on, it's far from perfect but I don't regret any of my taxes going to where it's needed. I think a lot of non-Americans don't understand that MAGA idiots are the rank minority, only 18% of all Americans (and only 38% of registered Republicans). In what universe should food that will kill us tastes GREAT and make us feel full and fed? Why the HELL does childbirth equal torture? When something becomes a law especially around civil rights(roe vs wade) (voting, etc, ) another administration can just debunk it? Why do some of these lawmakers even get elected? capitalism?
