The scientific community is constantly trying to expose its own mistakes — after all, what is a statement worth if it's never been the subject of scrutiny? However, no matter how hard it tries, some people just don't listen.

Recently, Redditor Jimbo_Jigs asked other platform users to share some myths and misconceptions that many still believe to be true, and they got what they asked for. Not just the classic "vaccines cause autism." Continue scrolling and check out the replies.

Agreed. But in all fairness, there are some pretty crafty, immoral people working very hard to emotionally manipulate and scare people into thinking stuff like this.

I'm going to say this for the people in the back, and the bottom of the comments, there is no known cause for autism, it's a disorder that comes from the brain being wired differently, and vaccines enter through the bloodstream and can't possibly rewire a person's brain. source: me being born autistic

While i agree, and have already dressed down several people for thinking vaccines have any link at all with autism, your brain isn't fully developed until you're 25, and both heavy metals and environmental toxin exposure are suspected risk factors (among others) it's less about being "rewired" and more about how development proceeds. But even then, there have been plenty of instances in which people have sustained trauma, and their brains have rewired themselves in weird ways. Lead for instance (while not considered a link to autism) is able to cross the blood brain barrier because it substitutes for calcium ions, wreaking all kinds of havoc on brain function. Something entering through your bloodstream isn't really the limiting factor, it's just that we know this particular thing is not the cause. (also on the spectrum)

It's also an extremely ableist idea. You would rather your child be dead or have a disease than have autism? What if your child was born with autism? It's bad parenting and offensive to autistic people.

Some Parents feel the need to blame Autism on something. That relieves them of any guilt they probably feel due to thinking that it is, somehow, their fault.

To be fair, we are taught to trust "experts" and a Medical Doctor who fit the criteria of "expert" published a paper that linked autism to vaccines. The gatekeepers dropped the ball and that is why so many believe this. Sure, the journal after the paper was published retracted it but the vast majority of folks do not - and cannot understand if they try - read scientific publications. The autism-vaccine connection is on the scientific community for not conducting adequate peer-review. Let us not place the blame on all those non-experts who were taught to trust experts!

The companies produce the pollution by producing products individuals buy. Companies may wish to shift the focus to individuals but this OP is shifting focus away from their consumption, and its associated pollution, to faceless companies which many will happily solely blame in an attempt to absolve themselves.

I've said repeatedly that if any flat-earther actually wanted to prove the earth was flat they could do it beyond a reasonable doubt. But none of them actually make any effort at all, always coming up with ludicrous excuses why they can't do it. Idiot-level excuses like "NASA stops anyone from traveling to the edge". Have these people never left their parents' basements? And do they really thing everyone else is dumb enough to buy that a small handful of reedy scientists and bureaucrats in the U.S. are stopping anyone from doing anything? And what about the centuries before NASA even came into existence? Jeez that just scratches the surface of the level of low-IQ crazy the flat-earthers exhibit.

45 Myths And Misconceptions That Some People Mistakenly Believe Are Actually True To answer the question, vaccines being anything but safe and effective is a hoax that some people believe. Vaccines are *by far* the medical intervention best-supported by evidence. Tens of billions of vaccines given to billions of people over the course of multiple centuries have proven them to be safe and effective. If you trust *any* part of medicine, you should trust vaccines. I would hazard a guess that vaccines have saved more lives than every other medical intervention combined.

The hypocritical thing about the anti-vaxx movement is that the parents refusing to vaccinate their kids are THEMSELVES vaccinated, because their parents weren’t all f****d up in their heads. Then there’s the fact—-not belief, but cold hard FACT—-that Andrew Wakefield faked results, used a way too tiny group to observe, threw out results that didn’t prove his theory—-which wasn’t so much a theory but an agenda because he had some kind of beef with pharmaceutical companies—-and basically lied in his report on his unscientific research. It was such bad science and bad medicine, and started such a dangerous movement, which has reintroduced old illnesses that were nearly eradicated, that his medical license was permanently revoked, and he can NEVER practice medicine, or anything related to medicine, ever again. Yet people still believe in his b******t. WTF is being put in the water these days that’s turning otherwise rational people into such conspiracy theory nut jobs? Believe me, there is much more comfort in scientific fact than there ever could be in mystical belief. If you understand something, you no longer have an irrational fear of it. If it’s something that it’s wise to fear, at least understanding it can help you better prepare for it. This isn’t rocket science, people.

Sometimes, probably most of the time, it's a reaction to the preservative(s), e.g., thimerosal - most vaccines can be obtained in single-dose vials, preservative free for those who are allergic.

The case of the woman who sued mcdonalds because she spilled hot coffee on herself. The hoax was that it was a frivolous lawsuit, that she was driving while drinking and she spilled the coffee on herself and just didn't like it and sued mcdonalds and won a lot of money. But the reality was that she wasn't driving, the coffee was extremely hot, people had already complained it was too hot, I don't remember how she spilled the coffee, but anyway after spilling just a bit of it on her leg, she got severe burns on her leg and had to go to the hospital and go to the ER. If she had drunk that she could have suffered much more harm. All she wanted was for mcdonalds to pay for her hospital bill, they didn't, and she sued them and won. Then either mcdonalds or it was a corporation that represented a bunch of corporations spread the hoax that some clumsy woman sued and won a lot of money because she spilled her coffee.

It was not a hoax, and she was not lying. I vividly remember how f*****g scalding hot that coffee, and coffee or tea from other similar places used to be. Plus, they always filled the flimsy cups they used right up to the damn brim, making it so easy to spill it and get burned on your hands, as well as your tongue (when you took the first sip). Making them turn the temperature down to a drinkable level, plus use sturdier cups with lids that stay on (better yet, allow us to bring our own reusable cups), was a GOOD result. She deserved every single penny of her settlement.

She spilled the coffee because it was so hot, the styrofoam cup deformed enough that the lid didn't fit. She needed multiple skin grafts. McD's refused to pay the hospital bills, originally all she asked for. That's why she sued. The myth was created by McDonald's PR department.

The case is Liebeck vs. McDonalds, and as a licensed, practicing lawyer, I agree that this case is often misunderstood, the final outcome not as unreasonable as people think. The plaintiff, Liebeck, an old lady, did spill coffee on herself while driving, (was holding it between her legs while driving and hit a speed bump) and it went on her lady parts, which caused her to have a fused vagina! Ouch! She rushed to a hospital in great pain, then had almost $90k in hospital bills. Sued, and McDs execs admitted at trial that they knew this sort of thing could happen. Jury was pissed at McDs, gave Liebeck $6 million to say 'F*** you McDs!' That caused the headlines. No one paid attention to the next part: an appeal an appellate judge lowered the $6M to something like $400k, I believe.

I thought she was a passenger at the time? And that her grandson who was driving had pulled over so she could add cream and sugar to the coffee, and it spilled then. I did find that she spent 8 days in the hospital, and had two years of medical treatments.

    1. There is only one election referenced when using the term "Big Lie", and that's discussing 45 and his allegations that he actually won. 2. Notice that 45 only says he was impacted and not anyone else who lost the election that year. 3. There have been more recent local and state elections since then.

The only “big lie” is the Republican Party, and all their nefarious plans to dismantle the US, and turn it into some kind of group of feudal kingdoms with themselves residing in the castles, and the rest of us—-including their sycophantic MAGAts—-as serfs, and breeding stock for more serfs.

I suppose if Trump won, then he would have declared the election to be just and fair. But, being the narcissistic infant that he is, he couldn't accept the reality that he was no longer wanted, and proceeded to throw fits about it, up to and including inciting an insurrection. The fact there are still people who worship this guy just blows my mind. If brains were gunpowder, these people couldn't manage to blow their noses.

Those same people see themselves as the heros who are saving America. The truth is they are not the Rebel Alliance, they are the Empire. An oppressive system that resists change. I also get the feeling that many are racist and scared that when they become the new minority, they will be treated how they currently treat minorities.

Though foreign interests have and do use social media to manipulate the public and influence elections. It's not so much election fraud as it is social engineering, basically hacking human beings. EDIT: Experts think the results of the 2016 US presidential election were due, at least in part, to this effect, so actually the opposite of what said president tried to claim.

Also, being out in the cold for an extended period can put stress on your immune system, making you more susceptible to infection, and can worsen your symptoms if you were already sick, which can make some people feel like they are suddenly sick from being in the cold if their symptoms were very mild previously. But yeah, you don't actually "catch" anything from the cold itself.

I would say that while this post is technically true, it does ignore that getting chilled can affect your immune system and make it more likely to get colds or other infections like pneumonia. But yes, the main reason is that we are in such close quarters during the winter so it just makes it easier for diseases to spread.

Hidden offshore accounts and shell companies don’t trickle. Neither do houses and yachts. Oddly, when those at the bottom have more, they will buy more. Therefore, trickle isn’t down from the top, but up for on the bottom, so paying those at the bottom enough to live decently—-most people don’t really want to be wealthy, they just want to be comfortably stress-free—-is the direction we should take, not the a*s backwards way that Reagan fell for, and that has been f*****g 99% of us over since 1980.

According to her (wife Sarah Northrup) recollections, Hubbard had said to his wife: “The only way to make any real money was to have religion. That’s essentially what he was trying to do with 'Dianetics.' Get a religion where he could have an income and the government wouldn’t take it away from him in the form of taxes."

In California a few years back, we were trying to get a ballot initiative passed for mental health funding. The Scientologists opposed it. Curious to see what their rational was, I went to their website. Here was their argument : "Most psychiatrists are rapists." Huh??? That was literally the extent of their "argument." The dumb thing was that this money wasn't for the psychiatrists in the first place (who are paid by either medical insurance or Medicare/medicaid). It was for therapy and self help programs, specifically drop in mental health centers where you can get emotional support through therapy and support groups. Fortunately the ballot measure passed.

45 Myths And Misconceptions That Some People Mistakenly Believe Are Actually True Homeopathy. It's water.

The "power" of homeopathic... stuff ('cause it's NOT medication) is measured in "Centesimal dilutions", or CH. Even conceding the active principles used works (they don't), at 12 CH statistically there is not a single atom of the principle in a liter of water. At 30 CH (the dilution commonly used for flu "medication") you can expect to have a single atom of active principle every 10 BILLIONS BILLIONS (10^18) liters of water. That is roughly the volume of the Indian Ocean to have ONE SINGLE ATOM of active principle.

Just to compare, at CH 10 in a deciliter of water you are going to have 1.000 atoms of "principle", and 75.000.000.000.000.000 atoms of ARSENIC from natural sources.

Not sure where all the hate is coming from. Not all alternative medicine = homeopathy. Some alternative ones do have science to explain why it works. And well, when 2 doctors and 3 scans can't find what the hell is wrong with me. And one guy studying alternative things can, ... I then told the doctor to check for x. He asked why, didn't tell. He was surprised. Needless to say I didn't take the antibiotics he gave me, i followed the alternative one. Not saying, to let just anyone operate on you, or set your broken bones. I am saying, to stop being so darn closed minded to think that every form of alternative medicine is a bad one. And sadly, there fakes out there. Another example is, people taking vitamin pills like b12. Even though the pill may contain the vitamin, if your body isn't missing it, then you don't need it and its useless. However, if your body does miss it, and you take the wrong one like my doctor did. You are just drinking water as well. Alternate guy found the right on

I have used a combination of homeopathic and other alternatives as well as doctor prescribed medications. I was advised to use Arnica Montana for injuries and a combination of arnica and raspberry leaf tea prior to giving birth to make delivery easier and healing faster. Turns out it is what Native Americans have been using for centuries. I kept Arnica in my rugby teams med kit. I have a book on Homepathic medicines, the thing about the book , is not one claims to be a CURE, they all say they will help to RELIEVE the symptoms of the health concern. The problem lies in those who think they cure. But if the symptoms are relieved, lessened , it is far easier for the body to fight off infection and heal faster. My book on Homeopathic also states "If you don't notice any health improvements after three days, go and see a medical doctor."

This needs to be clarified. Some forms of Homeopathy are legit, and have science behind them. Quick example - white willow tree bark tea is good to reduce pain. The science that backs this up? White willow tree bark is a chemical compound found in asprin and used to reduce pain.

Nope. White willow bark is an example of herbology or naturopathy, not homeopathy. Homeopathy is specifically the idea that an illness can be caused by a dilute sample of toxin or pathogen that caused the illness; it is not a catch-all term for all complementary medicine.

Do you know what the worst thing about modern day homeopathic remedies is? A lot of them don’t even contain any additional ingredient (other than sugar) not even at a diluted state. A lot of modern day homeopathic remedies are “made” using vibration. That’s right. Your practitioner looks up the frequency at which the ingredient vibrates in a catalogue, then puts a sugar pill into the bowl of their Sulis Remedy Maker (look it up!) sets the frequency to whatever the catalogue said, switches on the machine for a bit, and hey presto, here’s a sugar pill that vibrates at the same frequency as arnica.

That using a tampon can take away a females virginity. It’s crazy that people still believe that myth even though it’s been busted many years ago. There is not enough evidence that it can take away an individuals virginity. It shouldn’t even matter if your child is a virgin or not. You should love your child no matter what. Your child should be able to have the right to use tampons when they’re on their period. Not everyone wants to miss out from a chance of going swimming, and not everyone wants to wear a diaper everyday for 7 days straight.

I'm glad someone is saying what they mean here (you get an upvote, Monday). I don't like they way the OP is using the term "virginity". A broken hymen is not the same thing as lost virginity; it's a false equivalence, not that it should matter.

I have extremely heavy periods and for a really long time I suffered because there was no pad big enough to hold them. I went through a lot of embarrassment of leaks while at school. I didn't start using tampons until I was 17 because my mother believed this and scared me into thinking it would hurt, so I didn't try them. When I finally did it was a life-changing thing for me. I still had occasional leaks but it was nothing like before. The mess I was dealing with and the rashes I would get because walking around wet all the time causes some horrible things to happen and blistering.... I didn't smell my own blood all the time anymore. It really was life changing. I don't care what anyone says; you'd take tampons from me over my dead body. And guys who care about a hymen breaking are creepy and weird, and are clearly insecure with themselves which is why they only want virgins.

A female feotus develops with a hymen to stop bacteria and dirt out of the vagina while inside its mother stomach. They come in all different varieties of shape and thickness, they are known to break during strenuous activity or trauma etc and therefore cannot be the mile stick to qualify virginity. To lose your virginity you have to have sex, not insert a tampon or even a sex toy.

This!!! Ten million likes!!! Also, when women lose their virginity, they don't always bleed. They actually are not supposed to, and it isn't supposed to hurt. That is why having knowledge, and a caring partner who understands that a women needs foreplay and lube is important. I was lucky to grow up in a sex positive house with an Ob/Gyn mom. I was very educated. When I was ready to lose my virginity, (at 17) I was comfortable enough to discuss everything with my partner, and it was a great experience. I wish that was the case for all young women and women, but we all know it is not.

There needs to be a new term for never having had intercourse yet, because “virgin” is associated with the hymen. Although, guys don’t have hymens and we understand what they mean by their own virginity 🤔 Also, virginity is not synonymous with purity, just as skinny is not synonymous with healthy.

Too much MSG, sure. Anything in excess can be bad for you. But most recipes calling for MSG only require a tiny amount—-which is really all you need to enhance flavor. Use too much and it will overpower all the other flavors. Because it’s concentrated salt.

After he finished with our client, three of us spent like an hour taking turns with the lie detector and trying to "trick" it with lies. it was pretty easy.

I believe there’s a difference between modifying the genetic code of a plant, and selectively breeding it to have certain characteristics. Yes, most of the plants we consume have been selectively grown, but that doesn’t mean 99% have had their genome modified artificially.

When people talk of GMOs they aren't normally including selective breeding. They are referring to mutagenesis, RNA interference and transgensis. The EU does allow trangenic crops to the grown and sold, but the process is long, and costly.

My only concern with GMOs was that I had heard of Monsanto working to produce wheat and other crops that produce their own pesticides. Which means the food made from those plants would contain pesticides regardless of whether farmers sprayed them or not, and regardless of how well you wash them. So things like that make me very leery, given Monsanto's viciously evil reputation.

    Mary Rogers

Plants already produce their own pesticides naturally, though. So in reality there is no such thing as non-pesticide produce. It is a part of the plant's natural defense system. However, I agree that boosting the levels of natural pesticides may be harmful to humans, because "natural" doesn't always equal "safe."

To be clear: GMO refers to organism who’s DNA has been directly edited in a lab. What people have been doing for the past 10,000 (+!) years selectively breeding animals and plants is called artificial selection. Either way, there is no associated mechanism that would cause cancer.

GMO. Genetically Modified Organic. The literal purpose of this is to make food better. More pest resistant, bigger yields, even better flavor. If there's anything to be upset about, it's the companies acting like the mafia to the farmers who buy their seed products.

We use 100% of our brains. It’s just that so much of it is set on autopilot, to free us up from having to remind our lungs to breathe and our hearts to beat, and all the rest of the normal functions—-I, for one, am very glad about this. I have way too much other stuff to think about, and having all that added to the pile too would just be too much.

Dogs are "dichromatic," meaning they have two different types of cones in their eyes that respond to different wavelengths. Humans are "trichromatic" and have three. So dogs have some colour vision, but it's not as rich and varied as ours. There are illustrations and even apps that can show you what the world looks like to a dog.

There are "heirarchies" in most animal groups. Males in some, females in others. In wolfpacks, it is usually a dominate female. She is the only one allowed to produce pups. If another female produces a litter, the alpha female will either kill them outright or steal them from their mother and raise them as her own. But most of the members of the pack are related to one another. Hyenas have Alpha females with the majority of the pack consisting of daughters and granddaughters....hardly any males.

Conspiracies certainly exist. SUCCESSFUL conspiracies are less common. An ultimate conspiracy is totally invisible, so we know nothing. If you think you know of or suspect a conspiracy, you are probably wrong. Think of a conspiracy theory as an onion. Peel away layer after layer until you reach the center -- which is empty, alas. But the process is entertaining.

That Kitty Genovese was murdered as people heard her screams and did nothing. To this day people believe in the Bystander Effect. In fact multiple neighbors called the police. One even went to her to comfort her believing police were on the way and was driven off by the murderer coming back to finish her off. The New York Times asked the police about it in their reporting, and without checking, believed them that they didn’t get any calls. In fact the police were covering for them badly dropping the ball. If they’d actually responded when the first call came in, Genovese could probably have been saved. The lazy reporter later became the editor of the New York Times, having eroded a large amount of humanity’s trust in itself.

Bystander efect is most definitely real. I was small city LEO in early 2000's on way home one night saw circle of at least 20 people standing watching while SCHP Trooper was trying to arrest individual at scene of serious auto collision. Person was resisting arrest with violence using "personal" weapons and Trooper was obviously near exhaustion until I ran and tackled suspect to ground and arrest was completed by Trooper. ALL of the watchers were volunteer firemen who had responded to collision but did not help the Trooper!(Very unusual for said volunteers)

It is actually documented by scientific research that the more people involved/watching the less likely someone will get help. One of the reasons being, everyone thinks someone else will handle it. If your the only one their then you can't make that excuse. It's why CPR training says you need to specify someone to call 911 instead of just saying to a crowd "call 911".

It's interesting to see more about the case, but to say it's not real...there's a reason why you're told to single a person out if you ever need help from a situation. "Hey you, in the red shirt!" at least gets a little more attention than "somebody please help!"

There was no 911 in 1964. THere was confusion on who to call to get the police to that area. .The murder of Kitty Genovese helped push for the 911 system to be established. Texas didn't get it until 1983. I remember babysitting and asking parents which of the Memorial Villages they were in so I would know which police force to call if there was a problem.

NYPD at the time got multiple calls…but no one knew the exact location of the attack. Police responded and searched blocks and blocks of apartment buildings. By the time they found Genovese, it was too late. Originally, the news reported that no one even called for help and ignored her screams. Neither case was true.

I saw a fascinating doco on this a couple of years ago (Netflix, I think) Her brother did his own follow up; interviews, scene examination etc. He came to the conclusion that there was no Bystander Effect in Kitty’s case. The Myers-Briggs personality test is run by people who could not recognize most personality traits if they came with a 6 inch label written in thick black capital letters.

I disagree with this wholeheartedly. I've studied many types of personality testing and find them all to be helpful in understanding how people think. It literally significantly improved my relationship with my mother because we are opposites. Being able to understand how her feelings made her tick compared to me using my logic was very eye opening. No, they can't describe every person exactly, we are way too complex. But they are very insightful as to why people can be so vastly different.

It is, the Myers-Briggs mother-daughter team were not trained academically in psychology or psychiatry or neuroscience, were not licensed to give any mental health diagnoses. Psychologists and psychiatrists take more seriously the OCEAN personality traits: How is someone on: Openness or close minded ness, Conscientiousness or lack thereof, Extraversion or introversion, Agreeableness or lack thereof, Neuroticism or lack thereof.

No, touching a bird absolutely does not cause the mother to reject it. Birds have a terrible sense of smell. Obviously no one should needlessly mess with wildlife, but the smell claim is plain bogus. If you find a baby bird and you can reach the nest, put it back. The only risk is to YOU. (Pathogens or aggressive parents) The baby bird has BY FAR the best chance with its parents. Obviously rehabbers are amazing, but reuniting is always best (unless the baby is injured)

Although not entirely accurate, the colour of blood is quite different between oxygenated and deoxygenate states. Oxygenated blood is a vibrant red associated with the change in charge/state of the microscopic clump of iron in the red blood cell to which the oxygen is attached. Deoxygenated blood, while not blue, is a much duller, darker red and which can, in the right light, can have a pale blue tinge. Arteries do not always carry oxygenated blood and veins deoxygenated blood- arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry it toward the heart. Your pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, your pulmonary vein, carrying blood from your lungs back to your heart, carries oxygenated blood.

Except for the pulmonary ones (from the heart to the lungs and back again). Your pulmonary artery is the only artery that carries deoxygenated blood.

I had a roomate (she was a nurse) who believed this. We argued about it untill i told her to find me a picture of blue blood being drawn from the viens. Amazingly she still spent an hour searching the internet for one, never taking the hint i was referring to her own experiences too.

I have "blue blood". Can confirm. My arterial blood is a much more brighter red than my venous blood that is a deeper red. Due to the oxygenated haemoglobin (oxyhaemoglobin) vs deoxygenated haemoglobin (deoxyhaemoglobin) in my veins. All blood is red. Very bad if very bright red (means arterial bleed). And incredibly bad if such a deep red that appears purplish blue as that is so deoxygenated. In both cases you need medical attention very very quickly!

My hairdresser told me that this myth was created because people who got a haircut touched the ends of their hair and felt it was thicker.. of course it was, the tips wear off and get thinner, you cut them off and have healthy hair left that is thicker than the original tip. But by no means does that mean that hair will grow thicker as a whole if you shave. It just looks and feels that way.

Pro tip though, if you are tired of dealing with a cowlick or just don't like your hair pattern, you can shave it all off, then be careful as it grows back out, to train it into the pattern you do want. Can wear head coverings at night, brush and comb it the right way, and so forth to keep it in place while growing.

Using a cell phone a lot will give you cancer. The radiation phones give off is harmless. They use radio waves to operate, which many of us here will have been exposed to our entire lives whether or not we use a phone. AM/FM radio causes radio waves to be going through us at all times. SOURCE: Am currently studying the effects of different kinds of radiation on microorganisms in my microbiology class

Numerous studies on this topic have all come up showing zero evidence of this being a problem, even the ones not sponsored by cell phone companies. Physical models of the effect of this radiation on proteins and other organic chemicals show it's not even possible to have an effect.

Science communication suffers a lot from two words with specific scientific meanings—theory and radiation—being used in broad and inconcise ways in general language. Cell phones receive and emit (radiate) both heat and electromagnetic (EM) radiation. The heat just comes from it being an electronic device. The more it’s used, the warmer it gets. There are two types of EM radiation: ionizing (bad, cancer causing), and non-ionizing. The EM spectrum goes from extremely dangerous—gamma rays, X-rays—to mildly dangerous—ultraviolet—to harmless—visible light, infrared, microwaves, radio waves. Ionizing EM radiation is strong enough to break the molecular bonds in DNA causing mutation and/or cell death. Non-ionizing radiation cannot break through your cell walls or DNA. Gamma rays are like a tornado, radio waves like a light breeze, and your cells like a house. It doesn’t matter how long that breeze blows, it’s not going to knock your house down, or even break a window.

People hear radiation and think that radiation of any amount is dangerous, whereas the truth is more nuanced. Phones give off non ionising radiation, which don't interact with the body nearly as much as ionising radiation. In terms of cancer risk, alpha radiation is much more harmful if it gets into the body, but can generally be stopped with a few sheets of paper. Smoke detectors contain radioactive material, but it's well contained. Risk is determined by the type of radiation, length of exposure and the dose. Change one of these and you change your risk profile.

I don't think the concern was over the wavelength of the radiation, but over the intensity, due to the source being so close that it's literally touching your head. And, no, I'm NOT saying it causes cancer, because I don't know one way or another, just that the logic kinda makes sense.

    Mary Rogers

But it is only ionizing radiation that has the ability to break molecular bonds resulting in mutation, and radio waves are not that type of radiation.

This is misleading. Cell phones give off microwave radiation (much, much higher frequency than AM/FM waves); however, they're still much too low to affect DNA. That's the domain of gamma and X rays.

The left hemisphere deals more with logic/quantitative thinking whereas the right hemisphere is where we process emotion/qualitative thinking. We all use both hemispheres but it has been shown that different people have differing balances between the two hemispheres. People on the autism spectrum, for example, tend to lean more towards left hemisphere dominance and in part can explain their difficulty understanding/processing emotions

That is complete nonsense and, in fact, the very garbage that this post is talking about. Although areas of the brain specialise in certain tasks, thinking of any kind, be it logical or emotional, is a global process that takes place in the brain as a whole. Far from being "left-brain dominant" (which, again, is not a real thing), people with autism in fact seem to have unusually *symmetrical* brains, though only to subtle degree.

Vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness and carrots have vitamin A (in the form of beta carotene). So it works if you’re deficient in vitamin A, but otherwise doesn’t give your eyesight a boost.

Carrots have vitamin A which can help you avoid Xerophthalmia, a disease that causes dry eye, night blindness and spots on your eyes. But eating too much can cause seizures and brain maladies...hard to do with carrots. The best source of vitamin A though is still Liver.

Here in Switzerland a "Berliner" is cleary a jelly filled doughnut. I believe in Berlin they'd call it Pfannkuchen (pancakes, but people from Berlin/Germany, please correct me) and in Bavaria they're Krapfen. I have to admit that my first thought went to the yummy treat as well when I first heard his speech (just because I'm a glutton) but I doubt anyone would actually think he was calling himself a doughnut.

They're perhaps not like American donuts[sic] but British doughnuts, French beignets and various other European versions are all fried, and often stuffed with jam/jelly, apple puree or even chocolate, particularly, IME, the French ones. American ones are usually baked and much more cake-like, ours are deliciously crisp on the outside and light and fluffy in the middle.

Arnica does help with bruises. Citronella does repell mosquitoes, the smell of lavender does make one feel relaxed, clove oil helps alleviate toothache. Tea tree oil does have antibacterial properties, Smell does have an effect on our mood and has many other uses but essential oils will not cure your disease.

They're definitely not the magic that woo-woo people claim, but some of them do have valid, scientifically confirmed, uses. Just one example is that studies show lemon eucalyptus, aka lemon-scented gum, is in fact a very effective mosquito repellent. It is estimated to be about as effective as DEET.

It's actually not illegal to drive with interior lights on in dark in the Netherlands. Only if you use lights that aren't actually part of the vehicle (like Xmas lights) and cause an accident, then you risk getting fined under article 5 of Dutch traffic law (wegenverkeerswet).

Actually, that's a state to state call...not national. In some states, having the dome light on at night is illegal because it's considered a distraction to the driver. Like using cellphones while driving... In North Carolina, you can talk on a cell phone while driving, but not text. In Washington state, you aren't allowed to have your phone up to your ear while driving....hands free headsets only..or you will get a ticket and definitely no texting.

Headlight strength in highway is actually in the law here. At least in I think it is. As in the strong long lights are to be used while driving in the dark, but when you pass another car driving the other way, you switch to the short day lights until you've passed each other.

Crop Circles being created by alien spacecraft. College kids with engineering degrees pull off this hoax all the time, and they do it with nothing more than a central posts, a ball of string, and a heavy roller to mash down the crops. They produce perfectly concentric circles and straight lines using the same technology that the egyptians used to build pyramids.

Don't know about this one. Most Asians will wash chicken/meat/fish before cooking. Never been a problem. Washing removes the gunkiness and blood which just cooking can't. The confusion is about some countries' chickens come pre-washed and any further washing just spreads bacteria around without actually helping anything. However, in other countries, if the chickens are covered in gunk and blood, then washing can be a good idea.

I told her that all the bad germs that she tried to wash off would die when we'd prepare the meat. But she was a bit tense with food (think she had an eating disorder in her teens?) So in the end I let her wash the meat so she'd be ok with eating the food we made. But it was such a weird experience for me!

The problem with washing meat is when water splashes onto the sink, and kitchen counter tops. This can cause food poisoning. It is far healthier not to wash meat. The heat of cooking kills the bacteria.

I heard this, that chocolate milk comes from bleedy cows. In other words, the milk that is tinged with blood from udders having been rubbed raw by milking machines, is the milk they tend to use for chocolate milk because the coloration covers up the bloody tinge.

However an exhaustive study of the approximate area determined that it's not even in the top 10 most dangerous areas, it did however discover that the area is subjected to frequent hurricanes and tropical storms and has some of the heaviest used shipping lanes in the world

Aren’t the confusing him with Bantu Stephen Biko rather than it being any sort “Mandela Effect?” I remember that when I was young I often confused different parts of their stories. I also think I learned more about Biko, academically and from plays, movies, songs, books & documentaries. It was only after Mandela was freed & became president that I feel my exposure & knowledge of him caught up.

Things like Siren Head, the Goat Man, or Mothman, maybe not so much, but other animal like creatures that aren't like anything else we see/know of in our "normal" lives, yeah, it's possible. Look at the Galapagos islands alone. New species are still being discovered there even today. The thousands of sea life yet undiscovered. So Bigfoot/Yeti/Grassmen etc could be possible.

The “organic” food certification cartel. Food labeled as organic isn’t any better for you, science backs this. Modern pesticides are designed to be less harmful to the environment than older methods, and break down long before the food is to be consumed, even though you should always wash your produce. However, organic foods take more land and resources to produce, use older methods for pesticides that are MUCH worse for the environment, have more flaws, cost more, and generally don’t keep as long. Organic food is more wasteful and harmful to the environment, but their scam marketing campaigns have misled the general public.

Sorry but horeshit, do some better research, sure organic is not as easy but bloody hell this comment is ignorant. There is so mamy new studies on pesticides and herbicides in rice and fruit end vegetables. https://www.google.com/amp/s/time.com/5234787/dirty-dozen-pesticides/%3famp=true "The USDA also does not test fruits and vegetables for all pesticides used in crop production. For example, glyphosate is the most heavily used pesticide in the U.S., and it can be found in high levels on several grains and beans, such as oats and chickpeas. But the USDA has not analyzed these crops for glyphosate. This is troubling, because tests commissioned by EWG found almost three-fourths of popular oat-based food samples, including many popular with children, had pesticide residue levels higher than what EWG scientists consider protective of children’s health." Also all the pesticide runoff that has destroyed waterways in many countries.

Here in the Netherlands it's not like that. I disagree with what you post above. Ever heard of permaculture? That is a healthier way - for the environment - of producing stuff. It doesn't reap the soil of all it's nutritients and leave it barren and devoid of life like "modern" agriculture does. Food labeled as organic here should be better for the environment as a whole, it's not just meant to be better for the one who is going to eat it.

This totally depends on where in the world you live, and the criteria used for labelling foods as 'organic. A farmer friend used to grow 'organic' crops because it was cheaper to do so. The cost of fertilisers was too high. He also had cows, and used their manure as fertiliser.

The big problem is industrialized farming, forcing monoculture crops that destroy soil, requiring chemical and mineral fertilizers that leech into waterways and destroy surrounding area's. Unhealthy soil makes for unhealthy plants, which require more pesticides. Fortunately the old methods are being rediscovered. Rotating crops with different nutrient needs keeps soil healthy, as does planting companion crops, particularly when some are natural insect repellents. Healthy soil, means healthy plants, which are better equipped to endure temperature spikes, survive unfavorable weather conditions and repel and rebound from pest infestations, requireing less pesticides. Sustainable farming actually improves crop yields, requires less time, money and effort while producing better tasting food with better nutritional content. 36% of the worlds crops are used as animal feed in meat production, and meat production accounts for 80% of global agriculture land usage. Organic farming isn't the issue

Not accurate at all. Yes, certain certifying agencies are too lax. Namely the USDA. Oregon Tilth being more stringent. Whether a pesticide is dangerous or merely less harmful is a good example of research confirmation bias, often intentional. One could find results to promote any opinion. That’s before using statistical analysis to determine an outcome. There are financially interested parties and they agendas. Unlike medicine, where we have direct results of correlation versus causation, pesticides tend not to be tacit in this way and we have not invested time and money into researching in definitive ways. Science said they same thing about now banned pesticides until independent studies, without much money, proved the former proof as invalid. Think DDT & wildlife, particularly birds. But then a lot of what we pass off as safe food is scientifically proven not to be. Every grocery store in California has a warning sign on the I’m entrance that some of the items are known to the state to cause cancer , birth defects and other health issues.

Idk if the process has changed, but I used to know a guy whose job it was to inspect farms to make sure they were actually organic before they were certified Organic. He said it's a sham, they weren't allowed to do really thorough inspections (like look inside all the buildings) and as long as they didn't see any pesticides or whatever, they could certify the farm as Organic.

Organic is preferable if for no other reason that if it's being done wisely, organic methods expose our brothers and sisters doing the growing and harvesting to fewer harmful chemicals. Also fewer harmful chemicals going into our ground water. I have seen someone with organophosphate poisoning. It wasn't pretty.

For you vegans, good for you and I agree that is a very ethical way to live. However, please don't spread fud about the nutritional value of plants versus animal products. If you can't work with actual facts and have to make things up, you should think about how that actually backfires against getting people to agree with your ways. In fact, dairy products have much, much more bioavailable calcium than plant products do. You can definitely get your calcium from plants, but have to eat a heck of a lot of them to get enough.
