We humans are a weird bunch. Some of us are shooting a spacecraft at an asteroid to demonstrate that it's a viable technique to protect the planet but others still insist that swallowed gum will stay in our stomachs for 7 years.

Interested in hearing the most prevalent misconceptions, Reddit user FM596 made a post on the platform, asking everyone to share myths that are passed from generation to generation, and that people still believe in. On behalf of every child with Autism, I would happily punch people who think/say this in the throat. I would have to start with my parent in-laws. Possibly my parents too. They didn't say it out loud, but I know they were 'thinking' it.

It was also never 'vaccines' cause autism but Wakefield claimed it was one specific vaccine, the triple jab MMR. Still absolute rubbish, but it's even more frustrating that people have proceeded to get it wrong and made it worse.

Five years ago it was a small minority claiming vaccines cause autism and other nasty things, and they were widely regarded as idiots. Now anti-vax mentality is so prevalent, even among those who previously thought of it as silly. I have to keep telling people the anti-vax movement didn't get any less stupid just because you joined it.

If vaccines cause autism why isn't everyone who has had a vaccine autistic? The logic is flawed in this belief

It's like people are so dumb that they can't even comprehend how dumb they are. Hi, were you vaccinated as a child? Yes? Are you autistic? No? The hell you say! Because vaccines don't "cause autism" dummy! Let it go! There are just as many autistic people now as there always were, except now we are actually being diagnosed instead of locked in attics, sent to institutions, burned as witches, and so on. I'm 37 and my partner is 38 and we both have ASD.

However I do believe that these uneducated beetroots have unfortunately been fed these lies by 'influencers' or social propoganda (please tell me i used propoganda right)

Rhino horn is made from keratin. It’s the same stuff your own goddamned fingernails are made of. If you think rhino horn—-keratin—-makes you more of a man, forget killing an endangered species and just chew your own fingernails. Same effect. Which is none, btw.

An uncalculable number of animal's lives have been lost to this archaic alchemy. Yes, there are medical benefits that other animals can provide us. Like insulin before we were able to synthesize it. However, no amount of rhino horn will make a man more virile or fix E.D.

I have always wanted to know, why advertise all the time for viagra or some other erectile disfunction medication and have that sex life, asaand... make more babies who will be not yours you claim, and if yo do, not pay child support or any monetary or physical help to the mom? Viagra should advertise condoms along with their pill and provide them with a free sample. Now that dummies overturned Roe vs Wade, there will be more unwanted babies, kids in foster care, abused kids, because along with Viagra and slamming down RVW, there is no provision or bill to help all these extra kids that will be flooding the system in a few years. Sorry to go off but why not let the limp ones remain limp or provide mandatory vasectomies to men that prove themselves super baby makers and proud of it, but never support said babies. A mistake happens once, maybe twice but over and ofer? Oops.. we are cutting your chords so you can screw yourself crazy. And females that use a pregnancy to trap a man? No

We managed to get in touch with FM596 and they agreed to tell us more about what inspired their post. "One of the reasons I decided to ask this question was to see how many people will mention the thousand-years-old-myth of supposedly living in a democracy (in any country)," they told Bored Panda.

"Democracy was real and has existed only once. After it was violently destroyed, leaders used the word democracy to mislead us into thinking that what we have is the best we can get."

"Out of the 12,000 comments, only 12 people mentioned that myth, just 1 out of 12,000, or 0.008%. That says a lot about the level of political edification we get from the state."

When I was young I had a female best friend and we lived across from each other. I played house, with barbies, had tea parties, and a bunch of other stereotypical girl stuff. Crazy thing is, when went through puberty I was still a heterosexual male. One benefit was being able to make conversation with women about childhood toys. Made for great conversation on first dates. I imagine the insight would of been helpful if I had any female children. I would already know the proper etiquette for imaginary tea.

She seems desperate to BE Thatcher as too many still believe that her brand of government worked. Growth during Thatcher's time? 2%. Guess what it was in the 70s? 2%. On coming to power, Thatcher and co followed a policy of Monetarism – seeking to control the money supply in order to control inflation. This involved higher interest rates and higher taxes. This did reduce inflation to 5% by 1983, but at the cost of a deep recession and unemployment rising to over 3 million. Unemployment was never lower in the Thatcher period than it was in 1979 when she was elected prime minister. So much for the idea that trickle down economics creates jobs because wealthy people will start businesses. They somehow end up trousering the money every time. Stupid effing Tories. That's what happened before so I wonder what will happen this time??? Lots of poor people getting poorer and comfortably off people becoming poor people. Wealthy people carrying on because none of this impacts them.

... actually, climb-up-economics WOULD work - with the lower incomes raised, these people can buy and arrange things they NEED, but couldn't because it always competes with more acute needs. They don't hoard the plus of money they have, they - actually have to - spend it. When more people buy stuff like dishwashers, and have them installed, these fields of employment/business will benefit, renedering them enabled to not delay investments, and so on and so on. After all, we gave the trickle down BS a try of 30 years +, to none of the promised effects whatsoever but quite the opposite - isn't it kinda owed to at least try? After effing up half the country to the point of permanent bankruptcy, due to shiddy wages and generally too less responsibility and too much so called freedom on the side of the already rich, pampering them any further is nothing short of a crime.

    Carrie de Luka

You'd get my vote DC. The idea that wealthy people kick start the economy because they'll have swimming pools installed, buy flash cars, get extensions built and employ more people like window cleaners (all examples of what they'll be doing with their extra money I've heard this past week). The rich don't stop doing these things as the economic crisis doesn't impact them. They're rich! Most aren't self-made as well, they happen but it's more rare than people like to accept. Most wealth is passed down (another kind of trickle down altogether!). The other argument is that they create businesses yet the past proved that to be untrue as employment dropped and growth stayed still. If they do create businesses it didn't grow the economy, so other businesses must have failed to have created that rise in unemployment. It benefits the individuals in governments, who tend to be far from poor.

30 Common Myths That People Have To Finally Stop Believing That being out in cold weather will make you catch a Cold. The cold is a virus you catch from others and nothing to do with the outside temperature.

There is basis of truth in this one. People stay inside more during cold weather. Spending more time with other people in an enclosed space makes you more likely to be exposed to any viruses that might be around. Also, studies have found that airborne viruses are carried farther by the more denser cold air. Therefore, there is a greater chance of airborne viruses touching a person rather than ending up on the ground.

Not what they mean though. Without the virus all the other factors are irrelevant. People used to believe just being cold was enough and the only reason. So not based on truth, just based on not knowing. That the cold has aspects that increase risk is accurate but it isn't the understanding behind this belief. Think of it this way, if I am right about something but my reasons are wrong it means I am coincidentally accurate, but what I am saying is not therefore true. These are not the same.

As a medical drop-out, I offer this theory: With a dry nasal mucosa, you are more susceptible to infection by a respiratory virus. This is because "secretory immunoglobulin" (IgA) - antibodies secreted outside the body - has no matrix (mucus, in this case) to carry it. This phenomenon occurs in cold weather, when the air is dry. In the summer, the same thing occurs in cold, air-conditioned indoor environments. This is how we get "summer colds" or "air-conditioner colds". Thus, we observe no winter-seasonal pattern for colds. I suppose that you would not find this in the literature because it is inconsequential. More important would be finding the cure to the common cold, which there is none. Here is the Mayo Clinic's take on remedies for colds: (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/common-cold/in-depth/cold-remedies/art-20046403)

This is entirely true unless you become chilled or hypothermic. Both cause a strain on your body, like over excretion and can cause your immune system to not work as well. Hence, if your body was keeping a bug at bay the dip in your body’s defences could cause you to become ill, just like not sleeping as much or not eating as well makes you more susceptible to illness.

Person is most likely to be found in the first 48 hours, but with every passing hour chances to find them safe and healthy (or to find them at all) get smaller. Report immediately, especially when it comes to child! (Unfortunately the 48 hours myth is something that even part of police force believes - if the policeman says that you've to wait, you NEED to argue with them.)

Most good cops will jump on the search for a missing child immediately, even if they've only been missing for 20 minutes. Adults are a different story though, you can file the report at any time but they probably won't seriously start looking for a day or two.

Ironically, as much as we like to think that we value truth, we have also designed the world in a way that makes it really hard for it to travel between us.

There's a well-known MIT study from 2018 that analyzed the spread of news stories on Twitter. Using data drawn from 3 million platform users from 2006 to 2017, the researchers, led by Soroush Vosoughi, a computer scientist who is now at Dartmouth, found that fact-checked news stories moved differently through social networks depending on whether they were true or false.

"Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth," they wrote in their paper.

The whole virginity thing needs to die out too - there's far too much emphasis on female sexuality. Me having sex for the first time doesn't cause me to lose any part of me, or make me any different or less worthy in any way whatsoever. I refuse to buy into the virginity c**p and will not teach my children to either - of course they have been educated on sex and how to be safe from catching any std's and pregnancy, on consent and communication and not being pressurised into any situation you feel uncomfortable but I will not associate sex with some idea of purity or the idea you're giving yourself to someone - you aren't giving anything away, you're sharing a connection with someone, nothing more and that can be meaningful or just for fun and there is zero shame in that

That's not true for everyone, though. Some people will probably find it painful no matter what, but in a lot of cases the pain could at least be eased a lot by use of lube, breathing exercises, more foreplay, etc. Many women and AFAB people's first times are unpleasant because men who didn't know what they're doing just shoved it in there, and it sucks that that's so normalized.

I agree we should all treat other people the way we would like to be treated, it’s an excellent rule of thumb for peacefully coexisting with other people, but I cannot abide how most religions then turn around and treat other people like s**t, just because they don’t go to the same church/synagogue/mosque/etc. It’s like, once you add people to a religion, it’s tainted, because humans have the annoying tendency to ruin every good idea and turn it to s**t.

GMO and selective breeding are two different things entirely. I can cross two types of wheat in nature in my field/green house (selective breeding) but I can not splice in different properties I want from animal or plant speices by genome using biotechnology (GMO). To say GMO was been around for more than 1000 years is ludicrous.

I believe, that GMOs are mostly an US thing and the rest of the world still lives very good without them. And there is a huge difference between artifical manipulation and breeding. In Germany, we're afraid of GMOs and we don't want them.

    Walter Brameld

The difference between artificial manipulation and breeding is that with artificial manipulation you know exactly what you're getting. Besides, the alternative to GMO isn't "breeding", it's other, long-accepted forms of genetic tampering like mutation breeding. That's where they use chemicals or radiation to cause lots of random, *unknown* changes in the DNA, and then select the ones that appear to have desirable traits. That's not marketed as "GMO", and it's been happening on a wide scale since the 1930s. You probably eat food resulting from that process in Europe every day. I don't understand why that sloppy genetic tampering doesn't scare you but the precise introduction of known traits does.

As always in this kind of debate, the problem is not the technique in itself but the way it is used, and on top of it all, the final purpose of said use. Of course GMOs are the advanced, more efficient version of breeding techniques that have existed for ages. But you have to be very naive if you think that GMOs nowadays are just used to make better food for everyone. They are used to cope with the soil depletion that has been caused by agrochemical techniques promoted by the same industry which is now lobbying to impose its GMOs everywhere as the exclusive solution to food production issues it is largely responsible for. In other words, "Farmer, you want to produce some food on that soil your grandpa poisoned with my pesticide ? Here is my GMO, the only thing that can live on that soil now. You don't have any other choice, and don't you try to accomodate some free hardy seeds here or I'll sue you". Basically, this industry is intending to patent any single lifeform on this planet.

Corn. Corn as we eat it, and use it, today is vastly different than what it was 1000s of years ago. Call it selective breeding or GMO, but it was created by humans to become what it is. Mostly by Native Americans, in a very "natural" way.

    Remi Flynne

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Yes, that's entirely true. That is selective breeding though. I'm not entirely sure why people are so bothered by it being different to GMOs and argue against it. Both have their place, I expect. GMOs are when scientists go in and alter DNA in a manner that would be impossible via nature - using DNA from completely unrelated sources for instance (like bacteria). Selective breeding may alter the genetics of an organism but it is done in a way that is possible by using related organisms (grafting cuttings is one such example - manipulates nature but by pretty natural means) and, therefore, not actually what is meant by Genetically Modified. Maybe they'd prefer the term genetically engineered? Either way it's nonsensical to blur the different practices. You might end up with a genetically altered organism but by different means. GMO products are banned in some countries, not the selectively bred ones. So they clearly see a difference.

Most of what our brains do is to keep our bodies running. If we had to consciously remember to breathe, keep our hearts beating, and tell our legs, arms, eyes, etc to bend, move, and see, we wouldn’t have time to do anything else. So the brain takes that responsibility off our hands, to free us up so we have time for higher level thoughts and experiences.

Oh, i know this one. Someone was doing tests on someone trying to "map" the brain. They were trying to figure out what part of the brain does what and they were not ene close to finishing. They said to the media "we only know what 10% of the brain is for" and the media, in their infinite wisdom, twisted those words.

30 Common Myths That People Have To Finally Stop Believing That shaving makes hair grow back thicker and longer.

When you shave, the hair is cut in two. The lower part of the hair is now the top, where it used.tot be the middle of a hair. The original top of the hair had to move up to skin level and further on and was damaged doing so. And damaged means thinner. So the cut side is al the way up and as thick as possible. And this is what you experience when it grows further on. Massive and thick hair.

Its not like it grows on my head but a patch hair that just look a bit off, its like 3-4 mm between each hair and about 50 of them. So i accouly dont really know if i believe its a myth. But not entirely true. I do shave this, wierd cause I dont got any hair on the other breast. Sorry if its to much information.

Hair trends to grow back differently if there has been significant trauma or stress on the follicles. Chemo patients can have their hair totally change! I know one woman whose hair was tight curls before she lost it to chemo, then when she finished it grew back thin and straight.

You are right, it does appear thicker. Because the end of a shaved hair is thicker than the end that's been wearing down for a while, making it thinner and weaker. If you don't shave for a while, you'll see it'll be the same as before.

I understand this one bc from my experience cats like to sleep on heads. Ive waken up to every cat we ever had on my head. As well as a dog before. Soo the saying is Plausible in the sense of smothering a infant bc they will not be able to remove said sleeping head cat.

A tic can't be stopped or controlled at all; a stim can be stopped on a case-by-case basis but you can't stop the habit itself without a ton of effort)

We had fan tails that loved to play train. They would form a line with their head in the next one's tail. Then the lead would swim chaotic all over the tank and they would try to stay up. If one broke the line they would line up and start again. Funny to watch. We had a comet named Bevo that would stick his head out the tank and shake it back and forth until you stuck a pellet in his mouth. They would also lay in my hand if I put it in the tank. I thought it was for warmth. The water was always cold.

That is one of the reasons why belief in vampires started and continued to exist. Another one is that human's body after death starts to fill with gases due to decomposing. As a result sometimes when they pierced the body, it suddenly sat up with loud scream-like noise which was caused by sudden release of gases.

Yes! It might also be based off what some people saw. Momma birds will occasionally kick a baby out of the nest if something is wrong with it or it's the weak link, so if you take that "defective" baby and put it back in the nest the momma will kick it out again. People might just have misunderstood why she was doing it.

Most birds kick the young out because they can sense there is something wrong with it. Putting it back will get the baby to be kicked out again most likely. The best thing to do is to get it to a wild life center or if you're in the Netherlands, to call the animal ambulance.

Birds actually have a very poor sense of smell! It does bear mentioning though oftentimes a mother will oust offspring herself, she notices is unwell or injured and in the process of natural selection, nest mates will push a smaller, weaker sibling out of the nest. Oftentimes, it is nature’s way of ensuring survival of the fittest. Exceptions are of course, genuinely orphaned wildlife, or species in peril. This is why it is usually better to leave the baby bird alone. Mistaking fledglings- birds that have just begun to learn how to fly as being orphaned is far from it, the patent bird is watching nearby and still actively feeding them. In ‘parasitic,’ species, like cowbirds this also occurs by the host mother noticing that the baby is ‘different.’ Cowbirds are actually good mothers! Fairly frequently they wait for the host mother to leave the nest and then check on their babies! Even more amazingly, Cowbirds teach themselves to fly at night by sneaking out of the nest!

That cats kill babies. I’ve run into this so many times since having kids. And it’s not the older grandmas making these statements. I’ve had 20 year olds tell me that you can’t have cats if you plan to have babies because “they’ll steal their breath” or some other variation. No amount of reasoning or rationale will dissuade them of this belief

Cats will naturally cuddle up to a warm little body. If it also smells good, especially if it smell like milk, then bonus. Thing is, cats will generally just lay next to a baby, not on top of them. While I can see the concern stemming from the fact that infants may be too young to have developed the instinct to turn their heads away if something is blocking their breathing, as a lifelong cat owner—-since my own infancy—-I can tell you that they do not lay on top of anybody who isn’t the person—-the adult—-who regularly feeds them, and even that is a rare occurrence. Every cat I have had, and I’m now 61 years old, has either loudly meowed or touched my face with their paws or their cold wet noses (the most effective way to wake you up from a dead sleep) to remind me it’s time to feed them. But only if I’m sleeping through their normal feeding time, since cats are creatures of habit.

In the last 6 months I have heard that 1. My kids will get asthma from cat fur. 2. My kids will get a pendicitis from cat fur. 3. My kids will get sick often from the cats. All 100% false. Literally the opposite, kids who are exposed to animals have stronger immune systems and are less likely to get asthma. Most effective with indoor/door pets. Now, the cats stealing baby's breath does have a grain of truth. If it is super cold, cats will snuggle up to warm baby, generally laying on top of the baby. That is where the myth came from. The only article I found with this as a COD for an infant is the parent left sleeping baby outside in a stroller in the winter. This is common in some countries. Outside cat found a warm spot, unfortunely for the baby.

When my kids had a baby, their cat wouldn’t come near him. She was two years old when he was born and she was spoiled rotten. When they first brought the baby home from the hospital, she looked at him like “Who the hell is this?!” She actually had sibling rivalry. After a while she got used to him.

This is only really done in America. They claimed it for the above reason but (and I might be wrong here) they tried to use it as a way to get boys to stop masturbating

I'm an American. Not only was I circumcised as a child, my father, grandfathers, uncles, and brothers were too. When I was in school, I knew of only one boy who wasn't. Almost everybody had it done where I lived, and the vast majority of the parents, if asked, would talk about the "medical benefits", but deep down, it was because in the King James translation of the Bible, Zipporah protects Moses by circumcising their son and spreading the blood on Moses, and many Americans in "The Bible Belt" consider it a sacred covenant with God. As a person who has been circumcised, let me say to anyone considering it: Don't. I wish it had never been done to me. I think that while my parents were good people, they were misled, and that the practice is evil, freakish and disgusting. Don't do it.

American as well...I think a lot of my friend's still get it done to their babies because it's so ingrained into them here. A few of them said they let their husband's decide (which I find problematic) and they usually opt to do it so they "look like they do" it's really weird. I have only girls so this never came up for me. I also have a lot of Jewish friends with sons and their religion is what makes it a no-question in their mind thing.

Pit bulls can lock their jaws. If they bite you then you have to kill them because their jaws are locked. No, I am not kidding. I’ve heard this BS from the elderly and from kids. They just keep repeating this nonsense.

Jesus, Pit's are the cutest, dumbest, happiest meat heads and have such horrible raps. These dogs are beautiful animals that are always happy and just want love like any other doggo does. You can train ANY AND I MEAN ANY DOG TO BE AGGRESSIVE AND MEAN. I am not scared of any big dog or any dog for that matter except a Yorkie. Al mean dogs I've encountered or have bitten me were in fact YORKIES. I am terrified of them and will have a Anxiety attack the second I see one

Nope. Eyes. There's no animal that's going to continue biting if they're having an eye gouged out. The a**s trick will work in a pinch, but only if the dog is biting someone or something else (unless you have insanely long arms).

30 Common Myths That People Have To Finally Stop Believing 90% of the myths surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. If the baby’s heart rate is fast it’s a girl. If you crave sweet things it’s a girl, if you are carrying “high” it’s a girl. They’re the only ones I can think of at the moment but there are so many other myths out there.

I love pregnancy myths. Soooo silly. One that has shown to be correlated is baby hair and acid reflux. I think Harvard did a study and more acid reflux actually correlated with more fetal hair growth. I think it had to do with hormones, I can't remember exactly. It was true for me, both girls had hair, my second had a lot more hair and I had near constant acid reflux with her

If you have clear, glowing skin and great hair during pregnancy you are expecting a boy, if you have pimples and greasy hair or look unwell, a girl because she will "steal your beauty". To be fair, I also heard this the other way around, but not with "stealing beauty" bs but "boys are more trouble" bs.

Bulls are essentially tortured before going into the bullfighting ring. Additionally, their genitals are tightly strapped, which is painful. To level the playing field somewhat, the bullfighters should also be tortured and their genitals strapped the same way. In many countries, bullfighters actually kill the bull to end the fight—-and the bullfighters have backup if the bull gets the upper hand, while the bull has no backup at all. Bullfighting should be abolished, as it is a disgusting form of animal abuse. Leave your livestock alone, assholes.

This myth is due to Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), or tube televisions. They use electro magnets to direct the flow of electrons against a thin screen behind the glass. The electrons ignite the phosphorus on the screen to create an image. It is possible for x-rays to escape the metal screen. It was thought the x-rays would hurt a person's eyes. In truth, the amount of x-rays is less than natural everyday exposure. The eyestrain was due to poor refresh rates and tubes that needed tuning. The blue light is not a myth. However, it does not harm your eyes. In some people, the blue light makes it hard for for them to fall asleep with their body's natural rhythm.

According to the FDA, it is “economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects”. The FDA uses the term “defect” to describe the minimum amount of rodent and other animal feces, maggot and insect fragments, animal and human hairs, parasitic cysts, and rot allowed in your food. https://foodsafetytrainingcertification.com/food-safety-news/food-contamination-limits-allowed-by-law/

Eating 8 spiders doesn't mean that they crawl into your mouth while you sleep. Eating canned goods pretty much guarantees there might be spider bits in it (along with mouse droppings). Although, I do always check my water glass by the light of the alarm clock in the middle of the night.

One that's still not known well is the white people in the south and middle America that think they are part Cherokee. You're like 99.9% sure to be wrong. Your family is wrong. There wasn't a "Cherokee princess" or any of that. It's a folks tale basically. And your grandma was told the same as a kid, she told your mom, hour mom td you. People get defensive about this because you have to accept that A) Your family accidentally mislead you on something your whole life, and B) you don't have some magic Cherokee princess Native American blood. You're just white. This is what happened with Elizabeth Warren. She was told this tale and believed she was part Cherokee. I was also told this and believed it while growing up. Almost all of my friends were told the same about themselves too. Just a folk tale passed down the generations

the myth of native american ancestry is also common amongst many african-americans...which, when you think of it, is a great coping mechanism...imagining your great-great-grandmother falling in love and having babies with a native american is a much nicer way of thinking about how your skin is lighter than say, a someone from africa, rather than acknowledging the more likely explanation that your great-great-grandmother was likely raped by her white oppressors...as if being enslaved were not enough.

2 things: 1. a surprising number of people in America DO have Native American ancestry. I do (confirmed by DNA) and have no idea why I do. 2. The best explanation about this I ever saw was on FAQ on a Native American website years and years ago (no longer remember the nation). "How do I know if I'm (Native American)? Answer "If you have to ask that question, then chances are, you're probably not. In our nation, there is no 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 (Nation). You are or you aren't. It's not about blood. It's about how you're raised and how you grow up. If you were one of us, you wouldn't have to ask. You'd know because you'd always have been one of us, and there would be no question about it."

30 Common Myths That People Have To Finally Stop Believing Carrots improve vision. Has to be on the list for top propaganda campaigns. Started in WWII to cover for the use of radar. Still to this day more people I meet believe it than don't.

Carrots contain beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A in the body, which in turn binds to a protein in the eye to make rhodopsin. Rhodopsin is a light-absorbing molecule necessary for low-light and colorvision. In turn, the absence of vitamin A can cause nightblindbess. So in a way, carrots can improve your eyesight.

Not just carrots. All naturally orange foods have beta carotene, which the body transforms into vitamin A. It's needed to maintain good night vision but won't improve it beyond normal functioning. Also helps with keeping skin healthy and some other stuff. Sweet potatoes, red lentils and orange bell peppers will help just the same. Natural food colors are a good indication of some nutritional values (like red = antioxidants), which is why it is recommended to eat all 5 colors of fruit and veg every day.

30 Common Myths That People Have To Finally Stop Believing Sugar does not make kids hyper. Before you say "I'm a parent, and I can promise you it does", consider when kids have plenty of sugar. Birthday parties, exciting events, etc. *That* makes them spin up. If sugar was a direct cause of making kids hyper, why can they sit on a couch mashing candy for four hours while watching Frost on repeat. There's also the fact that kids are... You know, kids. Sometimes they're activated, sometimes they're not. Regardless of sugar intake.

You're confusing two uses of the word energy. Food is technically energy/fuel for the body, but this is in no way related to the effect that is being discussed. Hyper behavior is children is only related to food in that severely malnourished or very hungry children are unlikely to be interested in energetic play.

Yes. Because the first thing you do to a burn (of any kind) is put it under hot water... 🙄 It's a freaking BURN. If you burn your finger on a stove, do you immediately start running it under hot water to ease the sting? Think not. Cool water, people... ya know... because adding the additional scorch factor to a burn is not really a great idea.

No it’s just a way to sl*t shame women. Sure there might be a tension difference between your first time in your third time, but your vagina is not gonna get “loose“ from sex with different guys as opposed to one.

Taxes are raised by income brackets or ranges. So if you get like a dollars to a few dollar raise it won't really increase the amount of taxes coming out. But let's say you go from making 20k a year to 70k a year...your taxes will increase but not so significantly that you will make less money

The only income taxed at the higher rate is the amount which put you into that bracket. So if you get a 20,000 raise but 5,000 is into the next bracket, only that 5k gets the higher rate. So no, you make more money/

Most people don't seem to understand that when you move into a higher tax bracket, all of your money isn't taxed at the higher level. Only the income in the higher bracket is taxed higher. Your tax for the lesser amount remains the same, so you aren't making any less money on that amount than you were before.

I have to disagree on this one, it's happened at two different jobs, I'm at the high end of the lower tax bracket, get a small raise, it bumps me up into the low end of the higher bracket, now there's a higher percentage of a not very different total being taken out.

This isn’t specifically illegal. But it could be considered Distracted Driving, which in the US legal system is defined as “any non-driving activity a motorist engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving”. Distracted Driving may be classified as either a moving violation or a criminal misdemeanor depending on what jurisdiction you are in. To be realistic about it, you probably wouldn’t get in any trouble for having the light on unless you got into an accident.

Some cats like a taste of it, but not entire big bowls. Our cat, Bazzy, who passed away a year ago at age 19 1/2 (we adopted him when he was 9 weeks old), was partial to a little bit of half and half in the morning. Milk was too thin, and cream was too thick, but half and half was just right. He never has digestive or other issues from the thimble full I gave him, but the fats in it made his fur incredibly soft. As long as it isn’t poisonous (it’s not like I fed him chocolate or anything fatal for a cat, and he ate regular cat food), anything in moderation should be OK. I miss him terribly. RIP, dearest Bazzy!

We used to have a farm with dairy goats. Every animal on the farm, including the cats, would come running for a bit of fresh milk. Even the chickens wanted some. I don't think cats necessarily need milk, but the myth I keep hearing spread about is that cats are lactose intolerant and milk will make them sick and I call bs on that. None of my cats ever got diarrhea or sick otherwise from imbibing fresh goat milk.

    JB

Sorry. It’s not a myth. Most cats ARE lactose intolerant. Thing is, you aren’t giving them cow milk, you’re giving them goat milk, which doesn’t have high lactose. It may have no lactose, I’m not sure. What I do know is I have a sister who can’t ingest cow dairy. Every milk product has to be goat milk based. I have cats, they sure do try to stick their noses into cow cream because it smells yummy. But I don’t let them drink it because cow milk is bad for cats.

Polite reminder. Never take medical or veterinary advice from a random commenter online. Any half-way competent vet, and many knowledgeable animal lovers, would suspect calcium deficiency in a pre- or post-partum animal that is quickly becoming lethargic or collapsing. The correct say to treat this is by injection or infusion, not by giving something that may cause diarrhoea and vomiting.

Putting something still warm in the fridge will cause it to go bad. Leaving it out actually allows bacteria to grow faster and putting it in the fridge will reduce the time it spends in the danger zone. Although, it should be put separate from other fridge items, as it can unnecessarily warm those items and potentially reduce their lifespans.

From a chef: cool hot things down before putting them in the fridge. Ice baths help a lot. Warm is ok. Hot things can raise the temp of adjacent items, especially dairy. That's not good.

My great-grandmother told me how this one started. Before refrigerators became common, houses had an icebox. It was basically an insulated cabinet with ice in it to keep food cold. She said that if you put hot food in it, the ice would melt faster. That is why people started saying that you should leave hot food out until it reaches room temperature.

One of the leading books for people with sleep problems is "Fast Asleep", by Dr. Michael Mosley. He covers this. Basically the human body doesn't have just one circadian clock. Most of the major systems have their own. The "core" one works kind of like a rocket launch countdown. "Guidance? Go! Weather? Go! Engineering? Go!" etc When you eat later in the evening, your digestive system fires back up and then replies, "No Go!, I've still got work to do". It's called Time Restricted Eating (TRE). It also seems different people have different "windows" in which it's best to eat/not-eat.

S**t, even when I got my first adult job at age 20 as a medical filing clerk, I got my tongue pierced a few months later & my manager was like "you never had a lisp before" (tongue was swollen so I couldn't talk without a lisp) & when I showed her, she only said "hopefully the patients don't see it" & that was it. I worked in hospitals for over 20 years on the night shift as a Respiratory Therapist, I had one visible tattoo on my arm, a triquetra which I got when my first granddaughter who was name Trinity was born. The hospital policy was that there were no visible tattoos because the patients you were treating wouldn't like them. All I ever got was compliments and praise when they saw it and found out the reason I had it.

I would like to know the names of the companies the OP has worked at that care more for qualifications than appearance. I’m qualified, but I’m 61 (even though I’m told I look much younger), so can’t even get an interview. I can’t afford to retire in a few years, in fact my plan is to work another 20 +/- years. I come from a family full of people who have lived to 100 and more, so why should I spend a full third of my life in retirement, slowly vegetating on a fixed income that doesn’t adjust for inflation, and using up what investments I have? No. I’d rather keep going until I’m actually ready to slow down. Besides, staying “in the game” and working with people of all ages keeps you young. I discovered that when I went for my Masters in my fifties. Sitting in class and working closely with people half my age has kept me from becoming an old fuddy-duddy, and participating in the usual generational biases and conflicts.

The reason astronauts float on the International Space Station isn't because of low gravity, they're would actually be 90% of Earth's gravity but its actually because its in a perpetual free fall.

The movement of the space station causes it to be falling toward the next point past the Earth horizon. The fact that it doesn't fall is one of the ways we know Earth is not flat.

Not a myth exactly, but more of a misconception. Yawning is not because of boredom or for getting more oxygen to your brain. The latest research points to yawning assisting in lowering brain temperature.

Actually... gonna make a stand here. It's not because you'll get cramps, but all that movement and accidental water ingestion might make one want to puke. Especially if you have a big breakfast and go for a 5 minute boat ride to go swimming or diving. I barfed like a freshman! Felt like an idiot too. Later that week, went out and saw another guy do the exact same thing. Good times.

Growing up in the 50s and 60s was told that I had to wait an hour to swim, otherwise I would get cramps and drown. I cheated a lot about the time after eating and still alive today hahahaha

I believe this stemmed from the belief that if you ate before swimming, the blood that would normally be directed to the muscles in your arms and legs would be diverted to your stomach due to the digestion process. The fear being that you would become fatigued and drown! Could be wrong..

My dad insisted that if you didn't dry your hair immediately after getting out of the shower you would "catch your death of cold." As far as he was concerned, letting your hair stay damp would immediately give you a respiratory illness. Similarly, putting away dishes that weren't completely dry would putrify and poison someone. I know germ theory wasn't very well understood when he was a lad, but water was basically the end of all things as we know it to him.

Losing 90% heat through your head

Well it's *sort* of correct, but only by virtue of the fact that obviously you'll lose more heat through uncovered parts of your body rather than any anatomy-specific reason, and having an uncovered head is more likely than any other body part; if you don't wear a hat then sure, most of your heat loss will come from your head, but if you wore a hat and no pants most of the heat loss will come from your legs.

Again, some truth to it. When you're out in cold weather, you'll be wearing warm clothes but not necessarily a hat so in that case you lose heath through your head (obviously, if you were wearing shorts and a hat, you'd be losing most of the heat through your legs).

Same, I lived in a snowy mountain area for three winters and one time I was outside for a few minutes without a head covering, thinking I'd be okay because while there was snow on the ground, it didn't feel that cold. Boy, was I wrong. Pretty soon, my nearly naked head started to hurt from the cold.

I think this might have come about by seeing people sweat in cold weather. The effect makes it seem like most of the evaporation comes from the head. Or, that long hair makes a person hot. Most likely it was created to sell hats.

That Nightshade is a poisonous plant. The European variety of nightshade, Belladonna, is poisonous, however there are other varieties that are completely edible. When European explorers went over to the Americas and Africa, faced with the contradiction of seeing indigenous peoples eating nightshade stalks and leaves as a part of their diet, came to the conclusion that it must be because the indigenous people were closer to animals than humans. To this day people still believe that Black nightshade is a poisonous plant— entirely rooted in racism, scholars across generations have defended this lie.

Ashwaganda is in the nightshade family, and people have embraced it as a supplement. I discovered I can’t take it, as it makes my joints ache for some reason, so I assume some people have a sensitivity to nightshades. But most people can take it with no problem.

I’ve lived with enough women to believe this one. I used to be regular. I could literally know which day I would bleed and over 20 years of living with women my cycle would change to match my housemates. And all my friends had a similar experience

Since the cycle lasts a while, the probability that women working together will be starting theirs while other women are in the middle or end of theirs stretches out the amount of time that somebody is menstruating to a couple weeks. Doesn’t mean they’re exactly synced, just looks like it to men who don’t know any better. Wonder how their minds factor in women who have gone through menopause and don’t menstruate at all anymore.

Oddly enough. I was kinda sorta all over the place before uni. Moved in with five other young women, settled on a pattern that matched theirs for as long as we lived together. Once I struck out on my own? I had cycles that ranged from 20 to 60+ days. I don’t understand it, I just know it happened.

I never synced up with anyone, not even my identical twin sister, so... Rather unfortunately for her and her girlfriend, they didn't sync up either, which would have been useful for obvious reasons. What means syncing up anyway? Same start and end day or does it just mean, that both periods have overlapping days? Statistically speaking, the second would happen rather often.

Checking Halloween candy for whatever the hell it was checked for - razors, drugs, whatever the myth was

It stemmed from a real story. There was a man who killed his son in 1970-something by lacing his halloween candies with poison to get an insurance money. He also gave poisoned candies to few other children (if I remember correctly, they all survived) to cover his tracks, thus causing a big mass hysteria and starting a myth which lives to this day.

Yeah no one‘s gonna put hard drugs in someone’s candy that s**t be expensive for when I can tell, if they put needles right you should be able to see tearing in the wrapper basically there’s not a lot you can do to tamper with candy wrappers

Prior to 1970something, there were several accounts of people finding foreign objects in Halloween treats. Razor blades in apples. Glass shards in baked goods like brownies and cookies. Things were very different back then, and many folks would give out fruits and homemade treats. After these well publicized incidents, however, that all changed and only store bought candy was considered safe.
