Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is a method based on distributors selling goods or services, in the meantime attracting new recruits to the company. These salespeople are incentivized to draw others in by receiving a percentage from their sales. The same way, the newbies are encouraged not only to sell products but to look for likely candidates to join under their wing.

“Sounds a lot like a pyramid scheme,” you might think. And you’re right. The two are definitely alike; however, one is legal, the other—not so much. Also known as network marketing, MLM is a legitimate process, yet the line between the two can often get somewhat faded.

Whether it’s a pyramid scheme or a MLM company, some distributors can get way out of line to increase their sales. Such instances deserve shaming, and that’s exactly what the ‘Anti MLM’ community members on Reddit do. They share screenshots and memes and roast them one image at a time. We collected some of the best examples, covering the heartless, the crazy, and the foolish of multi-level marketing representatives for you to enjoy.

Multi-level marketing is often also called direct sales, which is based on person-to-person pitches. According to Statista, the US is the global leader when it comes to this. Back in 2021, direct sales generated nearly 43 billion dollars, which is more than double the amount in Korea—the follow-up country on the list. Germany, China, and Japan line up behind the two respectively.

IBIS data indicated that now, in 2023, the US market size of direct selling companies is over 65 billion dollars. It also revealed that it has been steadily growing for the last five years.

No, it isn’t actually, though it is highly inappropriate. HIPAA simply says that the medical facility can’t release your personal information to anyone outside the facility without your permission. This woman already had her information. What she didn’t isn’t illegal, but it is very unethical and she should definitely lose her job.

My prayers go out to the universe for you. Nothing I or anyone else can say makes it easier. There are some very useful support groups online or speak with your health care providers.

Multi-level marketing is not a recent innovation. It’s believed to date back to the junction of the 19th and 20th centuries. Determining the exact year is difficult; so is finding out who were the first ones to introduce it, but such companies as AVON and Nutrilite are considered to be among the flag bearers.

According to Zippia, AVON recently had roughly 23,000 distributors and an annual revenue of 3.4 billion US dollars. The largest MLM company in the US (Amway), is believed to have around 15,000 distributors and nearly 9 billion in revenue.

I worked vitamins/supplements (retail) in a grocery store for nearly 3 years. SUCH a disheartening, soul-sucking job... my dept manager kept berating me for not pushing supplements onto people. I'm science-minded, so I did a lot of research and reading about our products, and found out that, for example, "keto" supplements are total B.S. and you should NOT even be putting your body into ketosis. And MCT oil isn't going to blast away body fat. And collagen powder won't stop your hair loss. And liquid bentonite clay isn't going to "detox" you. And taking activated charcoal capsules won't "detox" you either. I hated lying to customers, so I wouldn't. Customers loved me because I was kind and honest, but my manager HATED me, and I was mysteriously "let go" without cause. Honestly, working retail supplements is almost as bad as MLM... I just got paid a lot less as I was just making minimum hourly wage :p

    Mathias

Well that's 2 types of BS meeting each other. The one kind of people who assume your body just works and when it doesn't you go to the doctor and take the subscribed pills. The other ones who buy tons of supplements for expensive money. Both are not good approaches. Because yes there are certain foods that help with detoxing because chemistry is real and certain molecules help with certain reactions and if you lack them, well your organs can't work that well. So while there is a lot of bad stuff going on in the supplements business and especially the MLM world please consider that just having organs is not enough to life healthy rather suggest to eat quality food and if needed and diagnosed it's often good to take quality supplements from companies that care and not those leeches that just want to sell you anything.

Back in the day, distributors would have to go door to door selling their products. Nowadays, there are numerous ways to reach a person without having to show up at their house. People are connected through phones and social media, which means a salesperson can reach them in a matter of minutes.

A lot of them choose the latter option to spread information or try to recruit others—online platforms are mostly free, readily available, and easy to use. However, looks can be deceiving, and some MLM companies that seem to be flourishing on social media might not be in real life.

It may have been a pre-existing debt/automatic deduction/exit fees that then left her without sufficient funds to buy formula. I, personally, am extremely sceptical of people asking for money on social media and yes it MAY have been a scam, BUT given that it was an anti-MLM group it probably had a lot of ex-MLM members who know how the systems work and how someone could end up in the situation.

The way multi-level marketing is introduced usually sounds very appealing. Recruiters tend to emphasize that you can work from anywhere, at any time, and make loads of money. Seems too good to be true? Well, because it most likely is.

The overwhelming majority (91%) join such schemes with hopes of earning money, yet as many as 47% admit to losing it in the end. The numbers show that these options are far from the easy peasy lemon squeezy kind of options they are often presented as. Fundera pointed out that 52% of MLM distributors say that the way the company presented making money is “not too accurate” or “not at all accurate.”

Sometimes legal divorce makes sense even if you stay together as a couple. I have older relatives who were married for over 40 years. She has a serious shopping problem that has gotten much more severe as she's gotten older. Not sure if that's early dementia or what, but it's at an addiction/compulsion level now. There's no reasoning with it. In order to preserve assets like the house and his pension, they divorced. She has no way to take out credit that he will be responsible for. They're still together, but no longer legally married. Maybe therapy will help, but either way, she no longer has the power to torpedo their retirement.

I had several friends who did MLM marketing. MLMs run contests, evangelical-type conventions and other activities that are addictive and cult-like. Because many people pull away from social connections with MLM agents, the agents' circle of friends often becomes fellow MLMers. This reinforces the addiction.

This reminds me of the old gimmick you could do in the newspaper classifieds. Buy an ad that says "Want to learn how to make quick easy money? Send me $10 and I'll show you how!" Then when people send you money send them back a letter that says "To make easy money guaranteed just put an ad in the paper that asks people to send you $10 to tell them how to get rich." Easy and unethical at the same time!

It's sad that Tupperware has come to this. It was a great company in the beginning that let a lot of people make income independently of their spouses (see 1950's patriarchal society). Word to the wise - don't buy new Tupperware. But the older stuff. It's cheap at thrift stores and frankly made better.

In some ways, multi-level marketing companies resemble a cult. According to the author and mental health professional Steven Alan Hassan, they both use similar strategies, such as appealing to people’s emotions and creating false portrayals of certain situations.

“Most MLMs use tactics of recruitment, financial manipulation, and the promise of large profits. But, like all cults, they employ thought control, magical thinking, thought-stopping, and self-blame. Failures are blamed directly on the consultants, for lack of hard work or competence. The group has no accountability, and the leaders do not allow questions or criticism,” he wrote in Psychology Today.

Whether it’s an uncle taking his shot at it during another family gathering or a classmate with eyes full of enthusiasm, they most likely mean well, but it’s important to take their assertions with a grain of salt. What sounds like legitimate MLM can end up being a pyramid scheme.

Anyone who uses these in a non-ironic way doesn't know what they mean. "Detox" - oh, precisely what POISON are you removing from my body with your detox-cleanse? Do you know its chemical formula? Is it cyanide? Strychnine? Arsenic? What...? Oh, you mean butter? f**k off. "Organic"... yeah... so... contains hydrated carbon molecules, like almost everything above the lithosphere and exposed to the atmosphere. Oh you mean not mass-farmed? So unsustainable and resource-intensive food for privileged rich people, got it. Superfood? Oh you mean like, you can totally eat only that and not die of malnutrition? You go ahead first. I will watch. If you live longer than a month I'll consider it. Anti-ageing. Sure. That's why you have crow's feet Sharon. Antioxidant. You mean a reducing agent? You mean like pure hydrogen? That reduces substances in a redox reaction. Because the opposite of an oxidising agent (antioxidant) is a reducing agent. So I must huff hydrogen ? or what?...

So you mean puts me into anaphylactic shock? No thanks. I have enough allergies. Anti-inflamatory food? Er... if there was sucha thing I'd definitely take it, but no, that would require REDUCING my immune response (inflammation = immune response)... hence... it would be an immune-DECREASING food. Are you people idiots? I must take anti-inflam food as well as immune-boosting food? Wont' they just cancel each other out? F*****g morons. Go back to science class.

In the US, they can lose their license if you report them to their certifying agency, and the hospital would fire them as well for liability issues

They could here in Sweden as well, I’m happy to report. (Although I’m also happy to report that MLMs aren’t a big problem here. Their prerequisites makes most people here see them as a fraudulent cult, luckily.)

This seems to be standard training. “If you know somebody has any news, good or bad, message them and use that as an opportunity to sell your MLM products.”

A pyramid scheme is a fraudulent system based on promises of high returns and emphasis on recruitment. In such cases, the founder attracts X amount of people, who then have to do the same, creating a snowball effect leading to rapid expansion. Newcomers usually have to pay a certain amount in order to be able to join.

In these schemes, people receive money for recruiting others, not for selling the goods. One of the main differences between that and legitimate MLM is that no product is actually sold in a pyramid scheme.

If she's a 3 yo and can write in this style, she actually doesn't need to collect money for college. She's a genius and will get her university diploma before her 12th. If it was written by her mom, the 3 y.o. is in serious trouble.

The pyramid scheme always leads to an inevitable collapse. That is why it’s important to look for possible red flags before signing up for anything of that kind. Associate Professor of Economics at Hamline University, Stacie Bosley, spoke about how to spot a pyramid scheme in a TED-Ed Video.

She distinguished three main signs to be on the lookout for—urgency-based pressure, promises about life-changing amounts of money, and having to pay in order to be able to sell goods and services.

I saw a story where Americans travelling to Europe went to the pharmacy for Tylenol. They got told “We don’t have Tylenol. We have paracetamol. It’s the same drug.” They refused to buy any. You can’t convince some people that different product names are exactly the same product. Facts don’t work on everybody

Pyramid schemes as well as MLM are typically very superficially appealing, especially to those going through hardships in life. The prospect of earning large sums fast might seem like the only way out for some of them. Sadly, certain people use others’ unfortunate circumstances to make money.

I'm honestly astounded that they even list how much of each herb is in the capsules. When I worked vitamins/supplements retail at a grocery store, SO MANY products just said "A 500 mg proprietary blend of these herbs" and listed them... so you could be getting like 499 mg of one herb and 1 mg of another, and you wouldn't know XD I needed a job at the time, but oh man, even working vit/supplements retail was so soul-crushing. I couldn't do it any more after 2.5 years.

Essential oils are good for topical use and/or aromatherapy. So it might be good in easing symptoms that way. Note I say easing, it's a remedy, and a remedy and a cure are two different things. This child needs professional help, and essential oils aren't it.

Yep. Heck, I think everyone probably knows someone who beads jewelry as a hobby who makes much better things. You'll find nicer stuff (quality of beads and construction) at any crafts fair where they're practically selling it at cost. It's hard to sell because it's so ubiquitous.

Such fast ways of generating money can be not only dangerous, but annoying as well. These images are great proof that certain distributors take it too far with their pitches. And when the recipients’ patience runs out, they might turn to the online world to let out their despair or shame the irritating salespeople.

Instant infuriation button-press for me. SO MANY essential oils are toxic to cats. Peppermint is TOXIC TO CATS. If "Peace & Calming" has lavender... TOXIC TO CATS. That is not even considering that essential oils are CONCENTRATED oils... meaning their scent is super-concentrated and is likely incredibly overwhelming to your cat, even if the particular oil isn't directly toxic. Anyone who uses essential oils on their pets is a horrible human being and is abusing their pets. ESPECIALLY if they are using essential oils in lieu of necessary medical treatment or pain management. Full stop.

I wanted to die when my store started carrying "oxygen-boosted water". You know, water that had been oxygenated. To somehow have MORE oxygen in it. Which is TOTALLY something you can do with H2O molecules. I HATED it when customers and co-workers would talk up the benefits of "alkaline water" too. Had a co-worker insist he only drank alkaline water and he was "never sick". You'd have to drink SO much alkaline water to actually affect your body's pH..... and if you affected your body's pH THAT much... you'd probably die. I loathe these "specialized magical waters" like ionized, oxygenated, alkaline etc.

This one is a little more complicated, as it's direct sales and employees are not allowed to recruit a "downline" to earn commissions from their sales. The parent company (Cutco) also owns Ka-Bar, which every US Marine (living or dead) will recognize. If you've ever walked through a warehouse club in the US and saw someone hawking kitchen knives, it was probably Vector.

I totally fell for this when I was 18.. I had to buy the knives, and find people to sell to. I had just moved 1500 miles from home, and literally knew no one other than my mil and (then) husband. She bought from me, and gave me some names. I cold called them, and actually got a few demonstrations. One guy felt sorry for me and bought something, and that was the extent of my sales.. but I have to say, I still have the knives from my sales kit, they're 24 years old, I've never sharpened them, and they're still as sharp and as good as the day I got them. They're incredible knives.

Months later the interviewer bothered me on MySpace and on another social media but I ghosted him. It wasn't like I was ever hired so....?

When I was much, much younger, I applied for a job selling Cutco knives. Back then you didn't see other MLMs around other than Amway or MaryKay, and I didn't know what a MLM even was. They're was no interview, just a presentation to a group of people. The thing that got me though was at the end when they expected us to provide them with the names and info of friends and family. I finally realized what they were doing (supplying them with leads) so I got right up and left.

I would always prefer to buy a brand name for makeup or skincare. There are plenty of product information and reviews on the internet. Is there any information about whether the MLM company is ethical (animal testing, staff treatment, using sweat shops, bad hygiene in the factory, chemical waste…). Given how MLMs seem to be all about screwing people over and don’t care about their employees nothing would surprise me.

No, medical grade water is water that has been filtered with reverse osmosis or is deionized. Maybe ok to drink if there is nothing else, but shouldn't be recommended as a daily or only thing to drink. Saliine solution is 9% sodium chloride, like if you were to ger an IV or clean your contacts. I see that a lot of companies are selling alkaline water as medical water, which again is ok for occasional use, but can throw your body's pH balance off.

if the child is starting to turn blue that is oxygen deprivation meaning they INHALED it. The child is probably dead within three minutes. Your essential oils will do fucakkll to remedy. Try the heimlich instead.

I have a relative that got sucked into that weird all in one cooker thing a while back. Had parties and everything for it. Cannot remember the name of it but I think one series of them started exploding or whatever when used. Relative would lose their mind at me for not attending their "parties" and "home demonstrations" would screech how I did not have to buy anything but then listening to the other relatives that did go they would pressure them into buying the product the entire time and the food tasted meh. Eventually stopped hosting things when had run through all their friends and the family with no more buyers but still at family events will talk about it at me (not to me) how my life is just not "at the level" because I refuse to engage. They also gave me and all the other women in the family a copy of "The Secret" one year for Xmas. I think they got into the essential oils a couple years back *eye roll*

I saw a medical student complaining about these types of things. If somebody is admitted to hospital they ask what medications they’re on. Then they need to research all the ingredients of these products to work out what exactly is in them, which is often the reason the patient is sick. It’s a massive waste of time

No, no, you can just cut it off with scissors! That's what their FAQ says! If you save the chain, they'll even give you ONE FREE re-welding!! Any re-welding after that first one and you have to pay $20, though!!

Oh yeah put a permanent bracelet on your growing child so when her arm gets so big it cuts off circulation to her hand and you have to have it amputated you will be so glad you got this done.

At high school we could not wear any jewellery of any kind, including pierced ears. Exceptions to this were girls who had their ears pierced before they were at the school and the girls that had bangles "culturally placed as children". Had quite a number of girls I was in classes with that were covered in jewellery like this and they said it was a pain much of the time. Before then I had no idea that putting gold bangles on girl children was a thing with some (not all) South Asian communities because it was a traditional dowry related thing. I know as an adult working in health care in most places I work they have had to make exceptions (read ignore) the infection control implications with this because of the huge number of health care workers with loads of arm jewellery that cannot/does not ever come off. They just get told to wear the long sleeve gowns and long cuff gloves and perform hand hygiene more often. The rest of us get crucified if we have anything but bare below elbow

I have really bad OCDs and phobias so I can’t wear jewellery on my left side.. I also can’t wear rings at all because I have a weird fear that they’ll get stuck and I won’t be able to get them off (yes,‘I know they can be cut off but I’d rather not lol). I couldn’t imagine jewellery much worse than something that doesn’t, and isn’t meant to come off!! No thanks!

This one I have personal experience with. I recognize the packaging. It's called Optavia, it's a rebranding of MediFast, and it is not MLM. It's a very aggressive weight loss program used in the healthcare inndustry. I was approaching 300# when my primary care physician retired. New PCP said I was clinically obese and approaching heart attack territory. He connected me with an Optavia "Coach". They don't hard sell, nor do they try and recruit "teams". In short, it combines a number of weight loss concepts into one: small meals every 2-3 hours, high protein/low carb/low sugar, etc. into prepared/semi prepared meals. It took nine months but I lost 100#. Was the food great? Heck no. (Though the cinnamon swirl cake was actually pretty good.) Maybe not for everyone, but it worked for me. Oh, and I kept the weight off five year later. I literally cannot physically eat as much as I used to.

Everything online states it is a MLM. They encourage starvation and can cause serious health issues. Weight loss should be a healthy diet and exercise. The only thing that has any nutritional value in those 6 pictures is the salmon. Not to be rude, but you truly sound like you are pitching this c**p. Edit-Look at the crazy ingredients for the powdered sweet potatoes: Ingredients: Potato flakes, milk protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, gum arabic, organic sweet potato powder*, calcium caseinate, nonfat milk, salt, maltodextrin, guar gum, potato starch, honey, brown sugar, tapioca dextrin, cinnamon, natural flavors, xanthan gum, carrageenan, whey, mono and diglycerides, sunflower lecithin, steviol glycosides, annatto (color), butter, Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086. Vitamins & Minerals: Potassium monophosphate, potassium chloride, magnesium oxide, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), vitamin E acetate, ferric orthophosphate (iron), niacinamide (vitamin B3), cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), potassium iodide, vitamin A palmitate, phytonadione (vitamin K1), calcium pantothenate (vitamin B5), zinc oxide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), sodium selenite, sodium molybdate, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid, cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12), chromium chloride, copper sulfate.

My mom, 68 years old on permanent disability, did this for so long before she figured how unsustainable it was. About $500 (per person) per month plus the regular real food meals to mix in. She was paying one of her "friends" from church $500 per month to let her starve.

First off if she is paying that much jer friend isn't really her friend. I know first hand it isn't $500 a month unless you as a client buy that much. And if you truly want to lose weight it works. I have lost almost 100 pounds and no I don't starve. Sorry your mom had a bad experience with this because it had been the only thing that worked for me as far as weight loss goes and I've tried everything.

Going to say that if you have been advised by a qualified, currently registered/certified, medical practitioner that you are overweight enough to require dietetic interventions for medically supervised weight loss via Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) you would be being seen and monitored as an in or outpatient with a dietician team plus the rest of the multi-disciplinary team. Not cheap and not something you do without fairly intensive medical supervision as those kind of interventions usually need supplements, similar to post bariatric surgery (gastric sleeves, banding etc). Even the ones you can get at the chemist to do at home recommend you are keeping in touch with the pharmacy regularly to monitor not only your weight loss but your vitals and general health, and that you have been cleared as ok to do this by your GP. VLCDs are not something that should be just "ooh that looks ok I can drop 5 kilos in a week" type of thinking

I'm a nurse. Yes, I'd let you keep those on because you'd argue the benefits of them (of which there is none) with me. Then I'd just chart that you refused to remove them so I wasn't responsible.

One can only afford to be in an MLM if you have a job that pays really well and you can buy things you don’t need every month, know you will never see that money again, and the probability of earning anything after all the money you pour into it is near nil.

Yup, this particular store was, for a VERY brief period of time. This went very viral and I think the store eventually shut down or limited comments cause it got bad. Reporters reached out to CFA who were like every store is individually owned and this program has ended. lol, It was kinda funny cause it sounded a bit terse which is understandable considering the laws the "volunteering" would break.
