From Olympic breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn's performance to Luigi Mangione's trial, this has been a bizarre year, full of laughs, tears, unexpected twists, and... Disappointments.
So, Reddit user TeIegraphAve made a post on the platform, asking everyone to share what they believe to be the most overrated things of 2024.
As people passionately debated what truly lived up to the hype and what fell flat, some answers emerged as pretty much unanimous selections, offering somewhat of a recap of the headlines we have been seeing lately.

The Tesla Cybertruck.
Awwww......some poor Musk fanboy diddums down voted me for my opinion. How fragile is their ego?

Some idiot in the Netherlands has one , but can't dive it. Not alowed and you need a truck drivers licence.
The Cyber-truck has slowly infiltrated the streets of Southern Ontario and they have created a new breed of bad drivers, we used to mock BMW drivers but the cyber-truck has taken its place now.

Musk with Trump. Seeing from non American perspective. Elon is literally everywhere.
Please accept my sincere apologies for our dog c**p getting on the rest of the world's shoes. Regards, USA.
I think once Musk starts stepping on Trump's orange toes, Trumps going to throw him under the bus for something and he will get rid of him. He's already getting a lot of attention, and narcissist Trump ain't going to put up with that.
Yep, it's happened a dozen times already, but the modern American ain't so good at learning from history, so they'll be surprised when it happens again. Of course, Musk is more popular than any of his former lackeys, so it'll be interesting to see what comes of it.

Stanley cups.
The only real Stanley Cup is twenty years older than the pictured one (1893). First won by the Montreal Hockey Club.
Overhyped and overpriced. I love the one I got at Aldi for $9.99USD. aldimug-67...4b9edb.jpg
Again, the attack on Stanley continues. Without Stanley there would quite possible never have been all the other brands out there now. Originally invented in 1913! Check your parents' basements!!
100% behind you on this! These are a good quality cup that were the originators of many of the designs aspects. If you genuinely need and insulated thermos - this is great investment that will last a lifetime. If you want a fashion accessory to take to your air conditioned office with the water cooler 2m away from you…..well, I guess you can spend your money on one if you really want.
Load More Replies...Yeti or nothing! My husband actually bought me a Stanley cup for Christmas. I returned it the next day. Stanley is for people trying too hard.
You wouldn't believe how much these were going for on Ebay when this craze hit. It did inspire me to buy a pint Stanley because I drink a lot of water and I like it cold. It's great for beer too.
A.I. photos. Upscaling or entirely A.I. created photos are running amok on social media, on Reddit subs too. Even photos that are already brilliant quality and don't need anymore upscaling are, for some reason, getting A.I. treatment and becoming unnatural.
I feel like standard women faces all have that tiny nose, round face, big eyes and full lips.
AI is theft, not art. There is NO ethical use of AI. Period. Full Stop. All AI "art" is nothing more than computer automated plagiarism
Not just A.I. I think that Photo Shop has ruined photography. Whe you see a beautiful image you no longer know if it's because of the photographer's skills with the camera or with the computer.
I am a cat person and even some of cat pages I follow are going nuts with the AI generated photos of mother cats and kittens in various sad and sympatric situations. Go back to just showing cute cats!
The trad wife thing.
The sheer fact that they have the time to film, edit and upload videos means they're not trad wives.
And get paid to do so. I’m sure they aren’t creating all of this content for *free*
Load More Replies...It is just so dangerous and detrimental to women. Death, divorce, disability occur daily, and can happen at any time. If a woman doesn't have her own money, she can become homeless and destitute in the blink of an eye. Giving away power to anyone else is foolish. Just don't do this. I get that staying home for a few years max, if children are young, is done, but it's a snapshot in time.
Happiness is not our natural condition, but selling a flawed version of it to each other is.
I'm a housewife with no children and how my husband and I mutually decided to structure our life together would be no business of yours even if you did have a clue what you were talking about. Which you clearly don't.

Ariana Grande / Wicked.
Ariana Grande is legitimately talented and has put in a lot of training to master her vocal instrument. I don't listen to her music a lot, but at least she's not a clueless influencer who wants to be famous with nothing to back it up.
I agree. The biggest problem I found in Wicked is, even if Cynthia Erivo is great casting, an excellent performer and a great actress... Grande is just better. More powerful, better modulation, deeper expression. And... Sometimes this leads Glinda to win vocal duels against Elpheba (e.g. I hope you are happy), and that's not right.
Load More Replies...Wicked in general. I wanted to see it, but, with all the drama surrounding it every other day, that want has lessened quite a bit.
It’s a good musical and good movie and has some great talent in it. All the marketing and merch that goes with it is ridiculous but the movie itself was definitely not overrated,
Saw Wicked yesterday. It was good! Overhyped, but the movie was good and I didn’t really have any problems. Whatever the drama she created, no one can deny that she is a very talented actress and singer. Cynthia Erivo is amazing too, and they were really good together!
This movie was excellent! Cynthia Arivo and Ariana Grande were great! The success of the movie out weigh these comments.
Hawk tuah should’ve never been as big as it was.

Honestly, it's was barely funny at first and yet I've never seen something run into the ground and milked for an entire year so severely. Not even necessarily by her too, people just kept talking about it for some reason. Especially weird for such a milquetoast joke.
It's basically a joke about fellatio, giving it a cartoony "hawk ptooey" or something like that (spitting on it)

I didn't really have any problems with this one except for the misspelling of "hock tooey."
It was funny and deserves to live on. I've had many hillarious hawk tua moments with my kids and buddies😁
AI everything. Like it's cool but ppl act like it's the answer to life, idk chill with it.
LavishnessTop3088:
One group of people thinks it’s the answer to everything and the other group of people thinks it’s our doom. And in the middle we have a bunch of software engineers who would love anyone who doesn’t know how AI even works on a technical level to Just. Shut. Up.
People are making billions from inventing something that will make multi millions unemployed and there's nothing we can do about it
Yeah. The risk is not that AI will become self-concious and take over the world (not in our lifetimes anyway). It's the risk to jobs, and it's the injustice it will bring. AI doing the first pass at resumes, AI choosing who gets a loan and who doesn't, etc. will bring in more bias than eliminate it. It's the same with facial recognition software that was trained mainly on white faces and introduces injustice for others.
Load More Replies...I have no idea how it works but I'm really glad to have it. It's a far superior search engine when I don't have enough information for Duckduckgo to work with. Like when I was trying to remember the name of a movie but could only recall the vaguest outline of it. The Bing bot got it on the first try.
But it’s also not that great, or creative and just what search engines spit out. I use an AI tool to write bios for my foster cats and they are usually very obviously AI generated.
Load More Replies...Read that as it grows it will start to incorporate its own products and may become more and more useless. But I'm certainly no expert, just distrust it.

The economy. GDP and stock markets are not a good measure of how individual working class people are doing.
Every time you hear the word "economy", replace it with "rich people yacht money" and the world will immediately start making more sense. "How would universal healthcare impact rich people yacht money?" "Can we reverse the climate change without jeopardizing the rich people yacht money?"
Sometimes a company's profits rise because they've cut staff and reduced wages and benefits for the hourly workers remaining.
1. Economic news is usually about inflation and unemployment too. 2. Pension funds and 401ks are invested in the stock market.
The Metaverse hype. Big tech keeps pushing it as the future of socializing and work, but most people just want their reality to be less expensive, not more virtual.
Was the Metaverse ever any "hype"? All I know about it is that Zuck tried to copy Ready Player One and ended up with the number of users in single digits.
I got a used Meta virtual reality thingy because when my brother and I tried our friend's, you could use Google Earth to basically just fly around the world and visit anything. It was like a super detailed flight simulator/walking simulator with access to the entire planet. But by the time I bought mine, because of some feud between Google and Facebook, there was no longer a way to use google earth on the meta like that. There is still nothing even similar to it. No decent flight simulators, no apps that let you, idk explore the oceans and swim around coral reefs like a fish (except Ocean Rift, but the graphics on that are not great).
As far as I understand the Metaverse: Basically the internet just with added VR environments to walk through. Who wants a complicated methode to browse the web?
Demure.
theschis:
“You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
The very last thing women should be is demure, because it means giving away power, conforming to outdated, restrictive sex stereotypes. Be yourself, and the wrong people will leave, which is a win. The right people, your people, will find you. EFF demure everything.
YESSSSS!!!! Thank you for staying exactly what I've been trying to say. That word gets me so insta angry I can't see straight let alone enunciate 🤬
Load More Replies...One more reason not to be on social media - I wouldn't want to wake up to an image like this.
So I looked this up since I'm not really using any SM and because I, too looked at her and admittedly thought to myself "Demure? Well, darling, you sure ain't" but apparently she meant it ironically to poke fun at this whole tradwife/patriarchal mindset and that was lost on many people, it seems.
Wasn't irony the whole point of the demure/mindful thing? Maybe I misread the meme

Tyson vs Paul.
MItrwaway:
If you've watched one Paul fight you've seen them all. He will only fight guys who are either old and retired, or guys who were never boxers to begin with. People should have learned a dozen fights ago that they're essentially sparring. You could tell Paul was pulling punches all fight.
How did he think this was a good idea? If he beat Tyson, he just beat up an old man. If he lost to Tyson, he got beat up by an old man. He loses either way.
I'm so glad I didn't put any money on this. If it were a real fight, Tyson would've whooped the tar of that boy.
Taylor Swift.
Shoddy-Computer2377:
Her Eras tour is now over. People are now disappointed that she hasn't yet announced her future plans.
Like, she's a billionaire only just about to turn 35 and is on track to be one of the most famous entertainers of all time. She doesn't need future plans.
And I bet you anything that if she ever gets engaged and married, or then has a child, it will be done in the upmost secrecy and announced long after the fact. Probably be dumped on Instagram weeks late.
She's not even a BAD singer, but the amount of hype she gets with her completely mediocre music is just astounding. Same with Ed Sheeran.
Me and my husband were sick of her back in 2010. We don't even listen to that type of music, and she was just everywhere.
Load More Replies...The girl's made a fortune out of relationship break ups. As a 50+ yo male, I actually like a lot of her music and think she's a decent person to boot. Good luck to her.

Food banks and other charities benefited from her donations, her got paid and bonuses most musicians would never give out. I have never heard any of her songs on purpose, but would never dislike her because I dont like her music.
She’s a fine singer. She’s a fine guitar player. She is a genius businesswoman, and here’s why. She took her okay talent, and she marketed herself so well that she became the most popular pop star in the world. I respect her for that.
Oh no, sleb wants to keep her life private - what will the media do?!
I have never heard one of her songs from start to finish. (I'm not proud of it or anything, I just don't get the hype from the snippets I've listened to. Also I'm 20 years older than her and still listen to Elvis, so.)
The Olympic "scandals" and US people IQ when they need to elect a president.

Mental health. A lot of people started talking about it but it's basically like going to the gym in January. Most dropped it or forgot about. Few actually started practicing and taking actions.
Ordinary-Iron-1058:
Also people have started misusing certain mental health terms to the point that they lose their gravity. Ex: narcissist, toxic, gaslighting etc.
Dunno about this one, I guess it depends on your country. I feel it's still present in public debate & discussions, real issues is how public authorities address it
We in the US really only hear the hype about mental health when we experience another school or work place shooting. Once the story has fallen out of the news, the discussion on mental health once again takes a back seat.

Everything marketed so heavily online; Ozempic (and the various knockoffs), everyone being encouraged to see themselves or their kids somewhere on the Autistic/ADHD spectrum now, TRT, various crypto scams. I'm not saying these things don't provide some important benefits or opportunities to some people. But seriously, don't believe the hype (and incessant marketing and influencer messaging).
Much like the trans craze in young people last decade or so. Wait it out. Go thru your feels. Grow up. Then see what you think.

Fashion “trends” such as super baggy pants for women.
Oh, for Christ's sake. Not so long ago it was bad when women wore leggings because they were "too tight" and showed everything. Now women are wearing baggy pants and people are bitching again. You know what? Shove a sock in your mouth and let women wear whatever is comfortable for them or better yet, whatever they damn well want.

The cost of eggs.
American regulations require eggs to be cleaned in a way that removes a protective layer and lets bacteria enter, so American eggs need to be kept refrigerated. British eggs are stored at room temperature and last longer.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with the cost.

Smash burgers. I can tell the difference, but it’s so minuscule to me that I don’t get what all the hype is over. Like my sister for example says that she actually prefers smash burgers over regular burgers, and I’m just like, are they even that different to where you can even have a preference? They’re good, but it’s just an ever so slightly different patty. It ain’t nothing special.
The Mallard reaction is stronger. I prefer them and I definitely can tell the difference
Everyone's taste experiences are different. My mother couldn't taste the difference between fresh-squeezed orange juice and the kind made from frozen concentrate. I'm sure to OP the difference is minuscule but to someone else it's huge. If it's worth it to you, eat it; if it's not, get something cheaper or more convenient or whatever suits you best.
So true. Most of us are guilty at some point or another of thinking everyone is just like us, but there is so much variation in bodies, we really need to get better at remembering that, and at believing what other people tell us their experiences are like even if they're different than ours.
Load More Replies...Smash burgers are burgers made by pressing ground beef onto a hot griddle or grill with a spatula, resulting in a thin patty with a crispy crust and craggy edges. Google's definition. I kinda figured that's what they were but I didn't know for sure either, lol.
Load More Replies...Smash burgers are definitely different from a thicker burger. It is all about the ratio of Maillard reaction for a crispy surface vs the softer interior. Good pop music. Her live show was fun when I saw her back in June.
But something happened and she got this weird cult following of fans who treat her like the 2nd coming. And she seems to be handling the new fame very poorly.
So... judging by the photo (and only that), "stick a fork in her, she's done?"
Load More Replies...I'm on Tumblr and a lot of people went absolutely WILD for her. She's also got quite interesting image. I initially thought she makes some cool alternative, anti-system music, then I heard some of her songs... Tolerable pop tunes.
She’s like lady Gaga.. “cool” avant guarde look and total bubblegum pop music.
I think people thought they wanted an authentic pop star, then when they got one, they were upset that she didn’t take people treating her like cràp. Every star has some cult following, every pop star gets overplayed to some degree. Overall, I think it’s refreshing to see someone who worked really hard to get where they are and doesn’t take c**p from people. Speaking as someone who knows like two of her songs.
She's from my area and I love her. I think she's very talented. I hope she continues to grow into a mature artist. I'll be following her success.

The Inside Out films are being used in mental health services and are providing a way for patients to get their feelings across which they could not do before. It has certainly helped my son express himself better when he struggles to verbalise his emotions.
I've certainly used the first one to explain to a friend why BPD feels like having a control desk like Inside Out where the emotions only have an ON or OFF switch to react with, not an equaliser deck.

Conspiracy theory: It Ends with Us, sort of a “Hallmark does Domestic Abuse) was just another run of the mill Netflix production designed to be on while viewers fold laundry, but by generating controversy and social indignation over itself, we can look forward to a Netflix 8-part docuseries about it all, and an Oscar-bait movie based on the docuseries (starring all the principles, now reconciled and playing themselves), titled “It Began with It Ends with Us.”

Kamala Harris’s chances of winning the election. And no, I’m not MAGA. Objectively, in retrospect, she was never going to win.
Trump's win was not massive, or even close to it. He's in the White House for various reasons, but not because he massively won. Stop spreading his publicity.
No, it wasn't. It's closer to the truth than that he really won in 2020, since he did at least legitimately win this time, but no doubt we'll continue to hear that it was a massive victory nonetheless. For the record, about 23% of the country voted for him. 49.9% of the votes went to him and 48.4% went to Harris. ETA I should have done the calculation using only citizens of voting age. That makes it 29% of the country.

Few white American men would have voted for a woman, let alone a black woman
It's upsetting, but it's true. America is decades away from being comfortable with a woman in charge, especially a woman that identifies as anything other than white. It's sad. For the most part, women run Americas households. When our men were away at war, women are the glue that held our country together - joining the workforce and doing jobs that historically had been delegated as "men only". Women are there to hold it all together when you want and need us, but when it comes to potentially ruling over men (which a President would do), people are threatened enough that the rest of our contributions mean squat. I really hoped she'd win, but I knew going in she wouldn't. She didn't have enough time to prepare a successful campaign, and the embarrassing orange man-baby had too many people swayed. It was over before it began, but hey - he's on his final 4 years, so if we can survive this next term, it will be over and he'll be permanently retired.
as a woman I can proudly say trump is the clear winner. ignoring all the bias I just want to say we women naturally appear weaker to other countries who hold women in low regard. It is much better that we have a man in office who will make our country more united than Kamala ever could.

By 2014 it started to recede into the background as UKIP took over as a whole new rebranding headed by Nigel Farage. By 2016 BMP(national front) stopped putting up candidates, no need. Job done Nigel moved on to a new Brexit Party, but Brexit wasn't the fanfare everyone hoped, Britain isn't the super power it was, so another rebrand, now Reform UK. And Nigel Farage sort of retires except for a not so secret handshake with the Conservatives and Elon Musk. Maybe next a New(ly) Reform(ed) Conservatives Party. They can always rebrand themselves as the Norsefire Party, "Strength Through Unity, Unity Through Faith, England Prevails".
All politicians are in it for themselves. But this Labour lot are a bunch of hateful, vengeful, boring ball bags.
‘Boring’ is good in politics. You’re supposed to listen, negotiate, find consensus, consider and reconsider. Not super interesting stuff. But hateful? I don’t think any Labour comment so far has come anywhere near Rees-Mogg’s twattish racism, sexism or classism. But please feel free to educate me with some examples.

2024 was the year of anti-incumbency unfortunately. Either many incumbent leaders/parties (US, UK, France, Belgium, South Africa, etc) were either voted out or have fewer votes from the last election. Canada won't be spared from it given how unpopular the Prime Minister has become. Cost of living, immigration, and housing being the cause of anti-incumbency sentiment.

So many of these items just wooshed over my head. Not interested, don't care. They are fun to read, though, so I can see what I'm missing.
So basically you’re missing all global sociatal issues? And dont give a s**t who they affect, , or how they affect you? Utter idiot.

I get somethings get shoved in our faces but I find it weird that people get so butt hurt about it. Most of these things will never go away. It will just be a different artist with music you dont like, actor who made a movie you dont want to see, a fashion trend you dont understand.
Yes, people's opinions are just that, opinions. You weren't forced to read them.
