From Olympic breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn's performance to Luigi Mangione's trial, this has been a bizarre year, full of laughs, tears, unexpected twists, and... Disappointments.

So, Reddit user TeIegraphAve made a post on the platform, asking everyone to share what they believe to be the most overrated things of 2024.

As people passionately debated what truly lived up to the hype and what fell flat, some answers emerged as pretty much unanimous selections, offering somewhat of a recap of the headlines we have been seeing lately.

If you genuinely need and insulated thermos - this is great investment that will last a lifetime. If you want a fashion accessory to take to your air conditioned office with the water cooler 2m away from you…..well, I guess you can spend your money on one if you really want.

It is just so dangerous and detrimental to women. Death, divorce, disability occur daily, and can happen at any time. If a woman doesn't have her own money, she can become homeless and destitute in the blink of an eye. Giving away power to anyone else is foolish. Just don't do this. I get that staying home for a few years max, if children are young, is done, but it's a snapshot in time.

I agree. The biggest problem I found in Wicked is, even if Cynthia Erivo is great casting, an excellent performer and a great actress... Grande is just better. More powerful, better modulation, deeper expression. And... Sometimes this leads Glinda to win vocal duels against Elpheba (e.g. I hope you are happy), and that's not right.

Yeah. The risk is not that AI will become self-concious and take over the world (not in our lifetimes anyway). It's the risk to jobs, and it's the injustice it will bring. AI doing the first pass at resumes, AI choosing who gets a loan and who doesn't, etc. will bring in more bias than eliminate it. It's the same with facial recognition software that was trained mainly on white faces and introduces injustice for others.

I got a used Meta virtual reality thingy because when my brother and I tried our friend's, you could use Google Earth to basically just fly around the world and visit anything. It was like a super detailed flight simulator/walking simulator with access to the entire planet. But by the time I bought mine, because of some feud between Google and Facebook, there was no longer a way to use google earth on the meta like that. There is still nothing even similar to it. No decent flight simulators, no apps that let you, idk explore the oceans and swim around coral reefs like a fish (except Ocean Rift, but the graphics on that are not great).

The very last thing women should be is demure, because it means giving away power, conforming to outdated, restrictive sex stereotypes. Be yourself, and the wrong people will leave, which is a win. The right people, your people, will find you. EFF demure everything.

Oh, for Christ's sake. Not so long ago it was bad when women wore leggings because they were "too tight" and showed everything. Now women are wearing baggy pants and people are bitching again. You know what? Shove a sock in your mouth and let women wear whatever is comfortable for them or better yet, whatever they damn well want.

She has had her breakthrough quite recently and should enjoy it while it lasts. The industry considers these talented women as disposable young hot chicks and will eventually remove her in favor of a newcomer. So no, I wish her all the best, may it be the dawn of a great career in this unforgivable industry.

They only cost 30 cents each. There's a bird flu epidemic going on and the US has lost one quarter of it's laying hens. Plus all other poultry that have died. Most of the loss has fallen on the farmers. People need to quit crying. Egg prices were at a dollar for almost 20 years.

"Juicy cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a white plate, fitting 2024 trends not favored next year." Smash burgers. I can tell the difference, but it’s so minuscule to me that I don’t get what all the hype is over. Like my sister for example says that she actually prefers smash burgers over regular burgers, and I’m just like, are they even that different to where you can even have a preference? They’re good, but it’s just an ever so slightly different patty. It ain’t nothing special.

I'm sure to OP the difference is minuscule but to someone else it's huge. If it's worth it to you, eat it; if it's not, get something cheaper or more convenient or whatever suits you best.

Smash burgers are definitely different from a thicker burger. It is all about the ratio of Maillard reaction for a crispy surface vs the softer interior. You can like either, or both (with a different preference at a different time). You can also do both options using a plant-based burger (i.e., Impossible burgers).

Every star has some cult following, every pop star gets overplayed to some degree. No, it wasn't. It's closer to the truth than that he really won in 2020, since he did at least legitimately win this time, but no doubt we'll continue to hear that it was a massive victory nonetheless. For the record, about 23% of the country voted for him. 49.9% of the votes went to him and 48.4% went to Harris. ETA I should have done the calculation using only citizens of voting age. That makes it 29% of the country.

It's upsetting, but it's true. America is decades away from being comfortable with a woman in charge, especially a woman that identifies as anything other than white. It's sad. For the most part, women run Americas households. When our men were away at war, women are the glue that held our country together - joining the workforce and doing jobs that historically had been delegated as "men only". Women are there to hold it all together when you want and need us, but when it comes to potentially ruling over men (which a President would do), people are threatened enough that the rest of our contributions mean squat. I really hoped she'd win, but I knew going in she wouldn't. She didn't have enough time to prepare a successful campaign, and the embarrassing orange man-baby had too many people swayed. It was over before it began, but hey - he's on his final 4 years, so if we can survive this next term, it will be over and he'll be permanently retired.

Fashion trends have never been quicker to change than they are today. https://shorturl.at/19Mwa [Also, "let alone" should be used with the most extreme example in a set, not the least. Eg: I can't afford to get a new wardrobe every year, let alone every month.]

Woman in pink outfit with pink eyeshadow, looking emotional; represents trends people want to avoid in 2024. The Substance.

Yeah, everyone talked about it as if it was super clever but I didn’t feel like it had anything interesting to say, nor was it very well executed.

As pure body-horror, it did the job. As a movie, it fell short in multiple areas.

A very good Black Mirror style premise at the beginning. But like the protagonist, it completely fell apart at the end and failed the landing.

It was pure p@rn. It could have been an excellent story if it weren't for the g-strings and backside shots while she was doing an "exercise show". No way would that be allowed on morning television.

Deadpool & Wolverine. When are we going to admit that it’s just a cynical cash-in for the MCU?

Oh it absolutely was a cash grab. But it was a fun watch which is all I really need from a superhero movie.

Um we're not? Fans have been waiting for this team up for like ever! And we finally got what we asked for. Actual FIGHT scenes, not censored, between Wolverine and Deadpool. Where's the problem?

It was honestly the most PG-13 out of the previous 2. It was a really good movie, interesting plot, and just as funny.

The one positive outcome of the lackluster movie year is that the endless deluge of comic book movie drivel for simpletons is finally coming to an end.

I loved the first two but this one was awful. Not funny and very little plot, just endless cameos. I was so bored.

The Penguin, not a masterpiece, a good 7/10 show. People are numbed by the amount of trash that gets released nowadays that an above average show is a masterpiece.

The National Front now with a very bad image would rebrand itself as the BNP making strong ties to other far right parties. By 2014 it started to recede into the background as UKIP took over as a whole new rebranding headed by Nigel Farage. By 2016 BMP(national front) stopped putting up candidates, no need. Job done Nigel moved on to a new Brexit Party, but Brexit wasn't the fanfare everyone hoped, Britain isn't the super power it was, so another rebrand, now Reform UK. And Nigel Farage sort of retires except for a not so secret handshake with the Conservatives and Elon Musk. Maybe next a New(ly) Reform(ed) Conservatives Party. They can always rebrand themselves as the Norsefire Party, "Strength Through Unity, Unity Through Faith, England Prevails".

‘Boring’ is good in politics. You’re supposed to listen, negotiate, find consensus, consider and reconsider. Not super interesting stuff. But hateful? I don’t think any Labour comment so far has come anywhere near Rees-Mogg’s twattish racism, sexism or classism. But please feel free to educate me with some examples.

Kier Starmer has been voted the worst PM ever including Truss and Johnson. Not bad for someone who has only been in power for 6 months.
