Some professions get a lot of hate, but it stops the moment people need their help. Others, however, can't seem to shake their bad reputation.

Reddit user Spektakles882 asked the internet which jobs are universally disliked for all the good reasons, and the answers came fast.

Due to fake appearances, exploitative tendencies, a lack of added value, or other factors, many careers were nailed to the shaming board, with questions about whether society would be worse off without them altogether.

When I lived in the US I moved a lot. Two of the weirdest cities I ever lived in were full of conservative Christian fundamentalists, although I managed to last in each state for 5 to 8 years (Tulsa, OK --> Oral Roberts and Lynchburg, Virginia --> Jerry Falwell). We sent an autistic child from a facility in the Tulsa area to Oral Roberts medical school and he came back with a diagnosis of "affected by demons." Oral Roberts had exposés where people would send them their last dollar to be prayed over and secret cameras showed them slicing open the envelopes, pulling out the checks, and throwing the letters in the dumpsters unread. They wouldn't allow men with facial hair walk across campus. The c**p they poured out 24/7 was enough to make a grown man cry.

However, the survey revealed there's a broader global distrust in the government. For example, government ministers are also among the least trusted (only 20% say they are trustworthy), and only 28% of respondents trust civil servants.

That being said, politicians have some rivals for the least trustworthy title.

Only 15% of Ipsos respondents say they trust social media influencers (a category that was also frequently mentioned in this Reddit discussion).

Have met a few in the wild and behind closed doors, with friends, exes, partners, etc they are atrocious. And many have caused irreparable damage to the values of society all to gain more followers, views, money, etc. Seen a few that travel around making money off of tragedies like storms, m*****s, kidnappings, etc like some tragedy pimps. Can go from posting how sympathetic they are about a death of some person and how they "knew" (they don't) them. Then ten seconds later post a thirst trap.

Also, unskippable, and it went back to the original place in the first ad when it was don't. I couldn't even be mad because of how surreal it was that my ad had ads.

@KatSaidWhat, I think you’re thinking about brothels, like the ones in Nevada. I understand those places are regulated and inspected, the places are kept squeaky clean and hygienic, the girls get regular check ups and shots, and there are strict rules of conduct and behavior for clients. The girls working there are doing so by choice, and can leave whenever they want. They also have the right to refuse a client for any reason, and the management cannot make them take the refused client. Nothing by force or coercion, all by the girls’ choice. All because the local government legalized the brothels, which then introduced the regulations and fair working conditions—-one example of government stepping in, when they realize they have to give in because the “business” will go on, whether it’s legal or illegal, and making it legal means they can make the conditions a whole lot better for the workers, thereby making a potentially horrible situation much much better for all. That’s an example of the kind of protection someone in that line of work should have. Is that what you were thinking of when you made your comment?

Why do you keep calling them girls? I believe that they must be of legal age to do this work legally and therefore they are women. Male (men) prostitutes are also allowed in Nevada.

Let’s call the majority of “lobbying” what it actually is—-BRIBERY. Plain and simple. Now, some lobbyists are not bribing anyone, they just go and plead their organization’s case to what is hopefully the friendly ear of a sympathetic politician who can help. That’s true lobbying, and in my mind, perfectly fine. But when lobbying starts to include favors, gifts, payments, and other “incentives”, then it crosses the line into bribery and attempts to buy a politician to do their organization’s bidding, even if it is illegal. That’s true lobbying is the lobbying that should stop, and any elected official who takes those bribes should be removed from office and run out of town on a rail. They should also be barred from running for ANY elected office, and I mean they can’t even run for dogcatcher in a tiny town in the boondocks.

There's bastards who do this with "Rosca de Reyes" (A popular circular bread that is eaten in January in Mexico) at Costco and other retailers. They buy the whole lot, then they try to resell it, even at the parking lot, for up to 10 times the price it originally had. Many though end up stuck with a few thousand pesos of unsellable bread, and I hope they choke on it.

In the late 60's early 70's, manufacturing made up 34% of the all american jobs, today it's less than 9%, and the economy continues to loose 300,000 jobs to outsourcing every year. Likewise, after the immigration boom at the turn of the century, everyone realized that unchecked expansion wasn't sustainable. Resources, homes, jobs, schools everything is finite, so they placed limits....which stood until the 1965 loophole that effectively undid those restrictions....and the consequences were so apparent, that closing that loophole, getting immigration under control became a bipartisan issue, for decades. Who opposed these restrictions? Corporations, and their lobbyists....who wanted, and continue to want to keep the steady slow of cheap labor moving through, because that keeps wages lower for everyone else too. 16 years since the minimum wage was raised. That's a very big part of the problem here, and the people complaining loudest are also the ones who refuse to let them be addressed.

    Tabitha

3 months ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It should be required that you have to physically live in a house you buy for a minimum of 6 months or 1 year BEFORE you can sell it. That would take away all incentives to flip a house, as flippers prefer to buy, fix, and sell before their first mortgage payment on it would come due. Making them occupy it for several months, thereby having to pay 6 to 12 mortgage payments would absolutely k**l the flipping trade, once and for all. Same goes for the wealthy buying houses as nothing but investments (or for money laundering purposes), with no intention of even renting them out, then letting them sit vacant. Getting rid of artificial inflators of home prices and home-hoarding practices might give home prices a chance to settle and even out to a reasonable level. Now, there could be an exception made for vacation homes in resort areas, but even that would need regulating so the flippers and hoarders can’t buy up all that real estate, and end up driving up prices and driving down the availability of housing in those places too.

I have not seen, on any of the numerous videos of ICE “arrests”, where one of the ICE thugs produces the proper paperwork—-a valid warrant signed by a judge—-and presents it to any of the people they “disappear”. There’s a specific protocol to follow, and they’re not doing it. They’re also arriving in what look like their own vehicles, many with out of state tags, and are not wearing badges or any identification. It almost looks like they’re not actual agents, but civilian MAGA thugs just getting their jollies being extremely cruel to very frightened people—-easy prey who don’t even speak English and don’t know their rights to due process.

theres more to burying a body than disposing a shell tho, you have to spend time and resources making the body presentable for a funeral - like stopping it from rotting away since some funerals can be a week or so after the person as already passed. the reason most corpses look peaceful and grand is because of make up. it shouldnt force someone into debt more but theres a lot more behind the scenes work than youd realize

They do suck but hear me out. One benefit is they buy those debts for pennies to the dollar, so shows how much the original debtor cares about the money but holding you hostage, the benefit is many times you can negotiate a lower payoff, because the debt collector still makes a profit. Sure, they are leeches. But here it's also a way to split the bill in several payments. For example, I took my bird to some very expansive appointments I knew I couldn't actually afford. The vet didn't do payment plans. The way I made it around it was to tell them to send it directly to debt collectors - who always seem to accept payment plans. You follow the plan and you got no further issues.

If a debt goes into collections, the original wrote it off, got a tax break on it and more than likely got an insurance check. It's then sold to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar. a $1000 note was probably bought for $100. So, insurance, write off plus that $100 the original company made. Now the collection agency who paid the $100 comes after you for the full $1000 plus interest! Hell naw! And if you ignore them, they sell it off to another debt collector. Funny, all 3 companies now put 3 negative marks on your credit report for the same debt. Supposedly illegal but if you don't know your rights...

In the US for-profit rehab industry there is a totally legal position called "marketers". They connect the rehabs with clients. They are paid a commision for this work. Because of the nature of the industry and the clients they serve, this creates a wealth of opportunities for straight up human trafficking.

At one point I was poached from 1 rehab by a marketer from another who offered to get me h**h. I was still in early sobriety and he offered me a couch and free d***s. While there he propositioned me for a chance to earn 1300$ (a cut of his commission for sending me) for going to a 30 day program in another state.

By the end of my 30 days, I had watched other people he had sent return to the rehab a week after "graduating" They told me he refused to give them cash but offered to get them high and convinced them to do it all over again.

Knowing I would never see the money, I chose not to return to that state and eventually got myself sober without the help of the rehab industry.

Honestly the profit motive shouldn't be anywhere near this industry. I wrote an entire article about my experience once but the friend who published it online stopped maintaining the website. Perhaps I'll revisit it.

Honestly, I feel like this is worse. You're taking people who are supposed to be getting better and breaking them again. The feelings that come with relapsing, especially if you're trying hard and struggling to quit are extremely dark. I really, really hope the guy just doesn't understand the gravity of what he's putting them through.

We can make the same argument about communism. China, North Korea, Vietnam, Russia, Eastern Germany, Venezuela, Laos, Romania, do some reading, see how all of that worked out for the people. In fact, take a look at how the Romanian orphans were treated under communist dictatorship. Human nature is the problem, some things just make it easier for the worst inclinations of human nature to take over, and it's not capitalism.

Maybe some of them. I have a friend who hired a life coach. She's basically just a therapist that helps her be more assertive. Like having your therapist spend a day with you and help you ask for what you want. It's helped her a lot. She's happier at least.

My SIL had a life coach for a few years. In retrospect she describes the life coach as a chronically unemployed and twice divorced optimist who gave a lot of marriage and career advice based on positivity that was unhelpful. She felt happier at the time and now admits it was a complete waste of money. To each their own, though. Might be worth paying someone to listen to you and make you feel happy.

Naturopaths (at least here) are pretty regulated- you have to do your research to find one that you trust, and you can't rely on just them medically. My naturopath was an NP in an oncology department before she switched, so she's highly evidence-based and only once in 4 years suggested a homeopathic treatment as a last resort (I didn't take it). I was having some issues with palpitations that we figured are hormonal, and when I asked my cardiologist if I should see an endo about it, he said "what is that going to do? Stick with your naturopath, she'll help you more." She has never once discouraged me from seeing my doctors or taking medication when needed. She tries to work as a holistic health care partner and checks bloodwork and everything else for me too.

House flippers. They buy a house for cheap, do some renovations, sell the house for more, rinse and repeat. It seems harmless, but that house they bought for cheap they can afford to outbid actual families. Now whoever just wanted to buy a starter home is priced out and guess who buys the renovated home, a landlord or property management company who rents it out for the next 30 years.

The only thing they accomplish is driving up the price of homes for everyone else, and they take a cut of the rising real estate market.

There should seriously be a set of requirements for candidates. For instance, they should have X amount of foreign relations experience, they should have to be a licensed attorney, they should have to have a masters degree from a REAL university not a diploma mill that also bears their name. There are requirements for every job you ever apply for in life and the office of the presidency should be no different. Just because some knucklehead can write their names doesn't qualify them for the job.
