Far more of your friends have a profound interest in true crime, conspiracy theories, and disturbing real-life tales than you’d think. Behind the gentle smiles and innocuous small-talk lie busy minds and guarded hearts that have a deep-rooted fascination with mystery, weirdness, and the darker aspects of what it means to be a human being.

That’s where the ‘Con Spiracy’ Instagram page comes in. Part of a massively popular brand, the page showcases some of the most bizarre and disturbing things that have happened (or are rumored to have been true). We’re featuring some of the most entrancing strange and morbid facts that the creator of the project has shared with his fans.

Scroll down if you want to be intrigued and spooked, dear Pandas. Upvote the facts that unsettled and weirded you out the most, and share your honest thoughts about them in the comments. Yes, sometimes, real life is far more frightening than the movies we watch and the books we read: you won't be able to look at some things the same way after this article.

Connor, the founder of 'Con Spiracy,' was kind enough to tell Bored Panda all about the inspiration behind the social media project, what kind of morbid content resonates the most with his audience, as well as why people are so fascinated with the weird and deeply dark aspects of humankind.

"As conscious beings, we cannot simply ignore the negative aspects of history and everyday life. Not all roses are red; there are dark realities beyond those familiar to us, and while some prefer to turn their heads away, many of us can’t help but look, and I think it’s important to look. This morbid curiosity exists within all of us in some form or another, and I think that embracing it makes us more interesting and understanding as collective individuals." Read on for the full interview.

I've read about this. They were kept together, at the sanctuary, but the lion and tiger have since passed away. Poor bear lost his family.

If I remember correctly two were named after jungle book characters, Baloo and Khan unfortunately I can remember the lion's name.

Thank goodness their last years were happier. It’s disgusting what they were subjected to, but at least they were shown love and kindness before they passed. Poor things.😥

"I grew up in a part of Connecticut that’s always been filled with a dark and mysterious allure. Whether it was Ed and Loraine Warren’s paranormal museum right down the road, local urban legends like the cannibalistic melon heads, or the dozens of abandoned mental hospitals in the area, the morbid curiosity was inescapable for me, and I found myself naturally drawn to it," Connor, the creator of the 'Con Spiracy' project, shared with Bored Panda.

"Once I randomly decided to present my passion to the world and discovered there was an audience that shared my fascination, it became an instant obsession for me. Not only could I explore my interests, but I now had the ability to evoke these experiences and feelings of “holy s***, WTF?!” in other people, and that’s a really awesome feeling."

It's not actually being all that brave. Soldiers fling themselves onto grenades because they're going to die anyway, hopefully they can save their comrades. However, doing it back-first while wearing a pack is very good thinking under pressure.

According to the founder of 'Con Spiracy,' there's "no true formula" to the stories and facts that he chooses to share with his audience.

"If something makes my jaw drop or gives me goosebumps, I know thousands of others will likely feel the same way. From my experience, I think the most resonating content is that which seems so alien to people: stories of the past and present involving people or situations that we simply cannot fathom going through ourselves. Lobotomies, genocides, inbreeding, serial killers, t*****e methods, you name it," he mentioned some of the darkest, most disturbing topics.

"They all seem so incredibly difficult to comprehend, but real people, good or bad, have found themselves in these very real scenarios time and time again. There is something about the most inconceivable aspects of life, history, and human nature that appears to be the most captivating to people."

Not really what morbid means. Morbid: characterized by an abnormal and unhealthy interest in disturbing and unpleasant subjects, especially death and disease. The fleeing men were at some distance away and posed no threat. The group, made up of children and adults, saw the circling helicopter and just joined the dots of what was going on. Really quick thinking. Children are much smarter and more capable than people give them credit for - most are quite clued up about the world and best that they are really.

This was part of Hindu mythology long before contact with native Americans. The disc of Earth is carried on the backs of four elephants that stand on the back of a turtle that swims through space. I was quite nonplussed that Discworld is famous, because it stole this idea from the Hindi. Great photo.

Stolen is a pretty strong word for an idea that was shared by several cultures and has been public domain for centuries. And the flat turtle elephant world isn't the main draw if the series, its the brilliantly written characters and clever humor.

It's not necessarily about 'enjoying' morbid content, so much as being drawn to it. "Perhaps it allows us to appreciate the safe and secure lifestyles we are accustomed to, which we would otherwise take for granted. I personally believe it’s important to be aware of all aspects of the human condition: some bright and beautiful, others dark and horrific," he told Bored Panda.

The ‘Con Spiracy’ brand features a wide range of weird and morbid facts alongside conspiracies, and has a huge following online. On TikTok alone, the project has a jaw-dropping 4.3 million followers.

They couldn't officially go in & do anything until it was confirmed or the rest of the world would see it as an act of aggression & assume that we were attacking them for no reason. The military is held to higher standards especially by the rest of the world & anything our military does or doesn't do can very easily be seen or be twisted into being seen as something to start a war over. Most think the military want war however they do their best to avoid it if possible and when it isn't possible try to end it as soon as possible with as few casualties as possible (not always possible but they try). Almost all of my family was military so I've learned alot from them.

People are huge fans of the more unsavory aspects of humankind. And Bored Panda found out why during a couple of interviews earlier. For instance, during our chat with Lyndsey Williams, who shares true crime memes on Instagram, we learned that the genre is extremely popular with women.

"My audience is 96% women which I find extremely interesting! I can't speak for everyone, but in my opinion, the reason I and so many other women are so drawn to the genre is that we can almost get into the mind of the perpetrator. How can I avoid people like the perp, and how did the victim get caught in a situation where such a heinous crime was committed and what can I do so that this never happens to me? It has honestly made me much more cautious and aware of my surroundings," Lyndsey told us earlier what makes the genre so appealing.

Meanwhile, psychologist Lee Chambers told Bored Panda that our fascination with true crime and disturbing stories is intrinsically tied to our evolutionary survival instincts.

"When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards," he said

Slightly misleading; while Louis did have schizophrenia, the images aren't an accurate image of a "descent", as such. Louis retained the ability to draw perfectly ordinary cats, and the fractal-esque designs seen here were more an exploration of his illness than a direct window into his sight.

This is actually NOT true. Yes he had schizophrenia, but it's not a 'descent'. Some of his later drawings were not abstract like the ones shown. He just painted like that.

It would depend on Turkish law. In the UK you only own land as far as the boundaries shown on the Deed Plan, so in the UK the tunnels etc wouldn’t belong to him if the extended outside if his legal ownership.

A couple of thousand years ago, the Romans called it 'IN UINO UERITAS' - in 'v'ino 'veritas - (no actual 'Vee' in Latin, they're Yoos) but it means 'in wine, there is truth.' In that 'being drunk' was no defense - you were you, only more so. Modern science concurs. It depresses your inhibitions, letting the real you out sooner and louder.

Reminds me of the crime show episode I watched in which an old man appears to have jumped to his death out of his bedroom window. But the detective then finds his beloved pet parrot sitting in its cage at about the same spot as he landed. Why would he have lowered the bird before jumping?? Big reveal: he was actually blind and had been keeping it secret, and his horrible children who wanted his money used a recording to trick him into thinking the house was on fire and that they had a safety net outside for him to jump into. Poor guy just had to rescue his bird first, though.

What’s more, many people even find true crime and similar stories comforting: all of the evil things we see and hear about are far removed from us; they’re happening to someone else, not us.

"It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," Lee told Bored Panda.

Weirdly, the Australian possum and the American opossum are unrelated. But my mom has seen a young opossum running about, realize it was watched, run dip it's nose in algae, stagger about with green slime on it's face, fall over twitching, then crack an eye to see if she was suitably alarmed. She swears that was cute and she laughed really hard!

"The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves. It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in."

As a non-American who is currently residing in the US, it's strange to see "Americans" disparage their country. I agree that there are some crazy things going on in the US, but it also frustrates me that a lot of the same issues have been occurring in other countries for years (women who are not just denied the right to choose, but have no rights at all. Not just gun violence, but child soldiers, terrorists, corrupt government/police, whole families disappearing) and who is advocating for them? Why does the US get the attention when people have been suffering & subjugated for years? I always get downvoted when I point out that everywhere has its good & bad. If you want to leave the US, fine, but know that there's going to be give & take no matter where you are.

You are completely right, but I would add that the fact the other countries have worse situations doesn't mean that we can't disparage where our country is currently. I don't think that you would have seen this many comments expressing such intense frustration at the state of my country five or ten years ago. Sadly, the direction in which we seem to be heading is towards the problems you describe. Hopefully not to the same extent, but still, it's the wrong direction.

In fact, while checking Wikipedia to be sure, I found a photo of what appears to be exactly that one baobab in the photo, except it's labelled as being taken in Madagascar. This looks like the use of forced perspective by the photographer. The group of people are standing further back behind the crocodile than they appear to, not immediately behind it. Assuming the average height of a human is 5' 5" and this crocodile is 22' long, it would be the length of four people. In this photo however, it would take at least seven or eight people to make up the entirety of the crocodile. The photographer had them stand further away to enhance the massive size of the animal when really all they needed was a banana.

We know why crocodiles grow big. The only reason this one stands out is that so many of them have been killed for skins. This specimen would not be particularly exceptional in a healthy environment.

And be very, very clear in your request. Once you have formally requested legal representation then nothing you say can be used against you in court from that point. However, that request *must* be straigtforward, i.e. "I request a lawyer". "I think I need a lawyer" is not good enough; even though they may tell you that representation has been called, anything you say can still be used against you.

If only this heartbreaking story was an isolated incident. I work in reentry (supporting formerly incarcerated women in their reentry to society), and my anecdotal experience has been that 99% of our clients live with mental illness. When writing a paper on the relationship between incarceration, trauma, and mental illness, the research I found backed up my observations. Currently, correctional facilities are the number one source of residential mental health "care". It's f@*#ed up and the US is greatly in need of prison reform.

Had that lion killed the idiot, it would have been shot because lions get a taste for human blood. (They are pretty crappy hunters and humans are easy prey.) This jackass risked the life of multiple people and an amazing animal for a photo.

I think there was also a case in Russia or somewhere of a girl growing up with dogs and thinking she was a dog, because the parents just... left her out in the back yard for years with the dogs. Its horrible to think about these poor kids.

Ok, but hear me out- we don't know WHY... chances are he had a c**p parent or two, but there is also a chance he had a parent with good intentions and lack of knowledge or skill - he looks to be in adequate health... Perhaps he was always non-verbal, perhaps special needs, and although she had no idea how to handle his needs perhaps his mom saw that birds made him happy, so she kept bringing him birds to make him happy? I'm not defending the choices their parents made, just trying not to assume they didn't love him without knowing all the facts.

Coyotes are native to Yellowstone! If wolves hadn't been killed off in the 1920s, coyote populations wouldn't have increased as much. Fun fact: coyotes hunted in packs in Yellowstone before wolves were reintroduced.

Could someone explain why they all decided to commit suicide?

    Ellie Vanille
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's a whole combination of factors that led up to this moment tbh. It's difficult to sum it all up in a comment. I think, the main thing to keep in mind is that the leader of the cult (Jim Jones) who was physically and mentally unwell, decided they all had to go. And the followers... followed. Although Jones didn't just spring that on them one day. He had been talking about it for a long time. He made them rehearse it as well. Still, on the day they finally did it, many cult members didn't want to die. There were also a lot of children who were just told to drink something, not knowing it was poison (they drank the Kool-Aid). Many people were forcefully injected with the poison. Plus, there were armed guards who were to shoot those who refused to drink the poison. This is why today we moved from calling it a mass suicide to calling it a mass murder-suicide or even a mass murder – because that is what it really is to be fair. Jim Jones killed over 930 people in the Jonestown massacre.

Many of them didn't willingly commit suicide. It was a much more chaotic and violent scene than just a cult drinking poison together. They were pretty much prisoners at that point.

The eating part usually is less of a problem, because eating three times a day can simply be a daily ritual. The most dangerous part is probably infection. Your cat bites you in the toe and you don't feel it. The wound gets infected and you still don't feel a thing. You might realize to late what happened to you and your toe or foot needs to be amputated. Worst case scenario would of course be blood poisoning and death.

The vast majority of people who survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in suicide attempts regretted it the moment their feet left the ground. This is why suicide prevention is important. Most people who attempt and fail don’t try again, and are merely at a low point they can’t see a way out of at the time. Also, learning this kept me from trying to kill myself when I was seriously considering it a couple of decades ago.

The bit about the spikes is an apocryphal addition. The strike occurred along the sideline of the field and also injured 30 bystanders who were, presumably, not wearing spikes. The voltage of lightning is so high that the few grams of aluminum in a spike wouldn't make a statistical difference as to which conductor it chooses. https://apnews.com/article/bab96c6a7b15042c747105ef9f7833fd

Correct. If lightning can travel 20 miles through dry air - one of the best electrical insulators- it's not going to worry about an inch of aluminium. If lightning strikes a field, cows that are aligned one way with the resultant electrical induction will die due to heart failure, and cows orientated another way will not. The home team were more than likely pointing one way and the way team the opposite way.

Not so much a gift as a commercial transaction. I haven't experienced this, but have met a wild lyrebird who dances for humans in exchange for food. And ditto a brolga. My local wild magpie has developed a beautiful unique song that it uses when it wants us to feed it. Our currawong sits on the bird bath for hours at a time and stares at us through the kitchen window, very unnerving. Some black ducks just waddle up to the front door and quack to get our attention.

In the world of entomology you can buy the chrysalises. My friend got three from an entomology fair few weeks back and I was lucky enough to be present just after one had emerged. It was incredible and larger than his face! I wish I could share the photos of him with the both perched on his nose!

This sounds like a myth, like the myth that a 14 year old student built an atomic bomb. However, in 1976, while attending Princeton University as an undergraduate, John Aristotle Phillips designed an atomic bomb using only publically available documents (and help from his thesis adviser who had worked on an actual bomb). This case is definitely true. The resultant design was evaluated and judged "inefficient but it would work". The declassified Manhattan project documents that Phillips used were rapidly reclassified. His design was used as a basis for the Pakistani bomb.

I looked around but it seems that the only major health issue they have (that's unique to them and doesn't affect their larger counterparts) is a recessive genetic mutation they call "the bulldog gene" that causes them to have a squashed face. Since it's recessive both parents need to be carriers so for the most part they seem as healthy as normal cows.

Although it was initially thought that the astronauts died essentially instantly the fuel tank exploded, when they recovered the wreckage, they found that several of the oxygen survival kits had been activated indicating that at least two of the crew survived the explosion only to die when the wreckage hit the water/ground- it tooks several minutes to fall from altitude. All because Morton-Thiokol management, despite evidence that the colder weather adversely affected the condition of the "O" ring seal on the solid rocket booster, thought the risk of failure was minimal and NASA management who wanted to keep to the launch schedule. Their penalties- Morton-Thiokol was awarded a multi-million dollar contract for more rocket boosters (although they were later absorbed by Northrop-Grumman) and the NASA FLight Director promoted

I disagree with this, strongly. A pyramid with a stepped base and smoothed cap is the ideal defensive structure, an attacker would have to fight uphill, and even if the attacker could capture a dozen steps the defenders could still win by fighting down from the step above. The smooth cap is to stop the attackers from coming up over the top and attacking the defenders from behind. A pyramid could only be paved over smooth like this when it was no longer required.

I think how it works is that when the bomb dropped there was a 'light' so powerful that it bleached everything, but since people were blocking the light, it didn't bleach certain areas. Like when you shine a light on a waterbottle and behind the waterbottle is still dark.

The unknown/unexplored parts of a globe/map where often marked with the Latin phrase, “Here be lions” and/or images of monsters. There are two known cases of the phrase, “Here be dragons” on an ancient map and this globe, but they are thought to indicate the same thing… an unexplored region. Can you envision ancient explorers sailing towards those “lions” or “dragons”… so they could stake their claim on newly discovered territory? And even though these phrases were printed on maps/globes… they were banking on the hope that they wouldn’t really discover “lions” or “dragons.” BTW… “Here be dragons” was denoting an area near Eastern Asia on this globe.

Quite the opposite, if it's in a bank or managed plan. Even if the currency changed, if you're still frozen thus there's still been laws & regulations. Currencies would convert & you'd be sitting on several hundreds of years of compound interest.

Lightning strikes form fulgurite, which tend to be more tube shaped, and are quite common actually. There is something more similar to this called trinitite, which was formed when the US tested the trinity atomic bomb, and turned the surrounding desert sand into a glass like material from the intense heat.

As Spork says, glass fulgurites caused by lightning strikes are quite common. What is rarer here is that the resulting glass is gem quality. These gems were prized in ancient Egypt above many other gemstones.

creating ligers is a horrible practice. the records show that they tend to unpredictable in their behavior. part of the reason for this is the nature of the two, tiger and lion, are contrary to each other. lions are pack/pride animals whereas tigers are solitary.

His brother liger Sinbad weighs less but is the tallest feline in the world. Yes, Hercules still seems to be alive, a photo was posted in May this year.

What exactly? If the Earth would stop all the loose stuff would stii have inertia. It's like riding on a bus that suddenly stops. If you mean the firestorm we talk about friction, the air would rub on objects with such speed that it sparks flames

Any fires would be small and local. Not all life. Most plant species and fungi would survive. This wouldn't be as deadly as the Permian-Triassic extinction 250 million years ago. And nowhere near as deadly as the "snowball Earth" event 650 million years ago. But yes, it would be a major extinction event. My favourite type of extinction event is called "flood basalt", where the massive amount of sulfur dioxide released makes Earth's entire atmosphere unbreathable by all animals, plants and fungi.

I am still bewildered that trying to escape prison ist a crime in "the land of the free". Here in Germany the wish for freedom from prison is seen as natural. You won't get punished additionally for escaping (although you will If the means you took are punishable, of course)

My grandfather updated his will yearly. When he passed, an aunt and her immediate family produced a nearly decade old will that favored her & her children. Before his last and official will was submitted to the courts by his attorney. In that near decade, he lost a few people and had more grandchildren and in-laws. Had not it gone to probate, the outcome of who was granted what would have been vastly different. Had any of us accessed what the older version had stated, we’d have been stealing. Possibly even from ourselves. I get the logic of his arrest, but 4 years seems rather excessive. And criminalising attempts at freedom seems counter to innate self-preservation.

It's funny now but that man terrorized us for months and I went on to have nightmares about him for years after. My kids laugh at me because I keep all the doors and windows locked at all times, but they didn't have the "joy" of growing up in LA in the 80's. A rock travelling from space through the atmosphere is called a meteor. If it hits the Earth it is then called a meteorite. The rock hit the lady before hitting the earth so she was struck by a meteor, not a meteorite.

Here you go .... The pilot at the time of the incident was Second Lt. Robert F. Elliott, 24, of Rich Square, North Carolina, who flew from Llanbedr on a gunnery practice mission and encountered difficulties - resulting in the crash-landing. The pilot walked away safely from the incident, but was reported missing in action a few months later.

OK, pump the brakes. He confessed to the murder of one person, was charged with 2nd degree murder and convicted. Sentenced to 20 years. There was a string of unsolved murders at the time that appeared to be the work of a serial killer. Bateson talked about these murders and said he might confess to them if it meant a lighter sentence. Doesn't really make sense, does it. You're accused of one murder, confessing to an additional six isn't going to get you a lighter sentence. While many in law enforcement thought he might have committed the other murders no charges were ever brought.

I am tempted not to believe this. With the exception of some Moon rocks known to be missing (eg. given to an African country with a corrupt leadership), the location of them all is well known. Well known but not well controlled, anybody can borrow a Moon rock from NASA if you can convinced them that you were doing valuable scientific work on the rocks. So I could sleep with a moon rock, perfectly legally, if I liked. A piece of trivia for you. All the moon rocks that the Soviet Union brought back from the Moon are currently being held in the USA, by NASA.

None, unless you call "pleasing humans" an evolutionary adventage (fair point, though, we are a significant force). But then dogs are bred according to people's demands, not according to the trial and error of natural selection. Two generations of wild/unorchestrated breeding and the most distinctive features (skin folds of shar peis and pugs leading to infections, short snouts, over large beagle ears, giant spaniel eyes and micro heads too small for their brains, crippled shepherds' hips, malformed pevises needing c-sections in bulldogs, ...) would mellow out a lot.

That would not have been possible. Because Alton was a man. His wife Willie is the one who fell into the well and gave birth to their son. The seven-pound, nine-ounce Franklin Woodrow Emile Jourdan had been under water about twenty minutes before being rescued and did not start breathing until being brought above the surface. The Jourdans also had another son, two-year-old Jack, who was born prematurely after Willie tripped while walking.
